What makes a house a home? Home is our grounding, our base, our launchpad. It’s where we start and end each day. While the particulars look different for each of us, the meaning and value it holds for all of us is undeniable. A house becomes a home when it is filled with love, memories and personal touches that make it unique to the individuals living there. It’s a place where people feel comfortable, safe and have a sense of belonging. A home is not just a physical structure, but a place where emotional connections are formed and life takes place. A house is a home that includes pieces of community, family, memories and culture. From floor to ceiling, every home tells a story through its design, decor and history. Throughout our March issue, we help weave together old and new, tap into Gallatin history and become inspired by one’s passion to renovate and customize home projects. Every month, we hear from readers who keep this magazine for longer than just the month labeled on the cover. They say they hold onto it for months as coffee table art or an accessory in their own home and nothing makes us happier to hear that. Historic Fairvue GALLATIN'S MOST HISTORIC PRIVATE RESIDENCE

What makes a house a home? Many have sought to define that answer and in the case of the beloved, antebellum-style mansion affectionately named the Fairvue Plantation in Gallatin, that question continues to be answered by those who share the rich history of this iconic home. As a bachelor pad, summer home to one of the South’s most prominent slave traders, a racehorse nursery, Union soldier refuge and finally into the hands of a family who was ready to put down their own local roots, this home has served many roles

in Gallatin and still holds stories today of several important historical eras. The journey this estate took to get to where it is currently is long and arduous, but the history and stories are what shaped its foundation and continues to make an impact in our community today. Purchasing 2,000 acres from his father in Gallatin, the core of the Fairvue Plantation was originally built by Isaac Franklin in 1832 and was simply named Fairvue. Fairvue was an early working plantation, housing mostly cattle and

crops initially. It also served as a getaway and a prized homestead of Franklin who amassed a number of homes and properties across the Old South throughout his time. Separated into quarters with each parcel carefully laid out, in addition to the home itself on the property, there originally stood 16 brick slave houses, an overseer’s home, a blacksmith shop, commissary, grist mill, cotton gin, hostler house and a twostory spring house. The local spring supplied water for all of the inhabitants which also included 129 enslaved plantation workers at its height. With all of its splendor and ornate tales of luxury of its time, Fairvue Plantation caught the eye of a young Adelicia Hayes. Adelicia having left a note in Franklin’s guest book during a

visit to the home would later became the young bride to Isaac Franklin in 1839. Once married, a new wing was added to the house with a garden and a mushroom-shaped ice house that still stands today. As a true bachelor pad prior to his marriage, Franklin was noted to have great taste and a deep desire for possessions of impeccable home decor and luxuries. A black Irish Kilkenny marble mantel and solid brass newel posts for the staircase are a few of his touches that he installed that are still functional showpieces in the current rendition of the home.

Four years prior to his marriage to Adelicia, Franklin would cease active involvement in the slave trade business he had built and instead transitioned to become a planter in the 1840s. He would spend his time between Fairvue and his six additional plantations in the West Feliciana Parrish of Louisiana. It was on one of his Louisiana trips that Franklin died after an unexpected illness and was returned to Tennessee. His untimely death ultimately left his wife

Adelicia as one of the wealthiest women in the United States. Adelicia was left over 10,000 acres of land in Louisiana and Tennessee (2,000 of those acres being in Gallatin via Fairvue Plantation including 16 thoroughbred horses, a racing stable and horse track), 50,000 acres of land in Texas, cash, bonds, stocks, other land grants, businesses and over 750 slaves at the time of Franklin's death. Adelicia would go on to remarry twice more, each time being able to maintain

her past properties and increasing her wealth and influence. Her marriage to Col. Joseph Acklen, a lawyer from Alabama, also resulted in the construction of the Belmont Mansion (now part of Belmont University in Nashville), completed in 1849. The Civil War followed shortly after along with a takeover by Union soldiers that left the Fairvue Plantation vacant. During the war, papers were drawn up that held protection for slaves, the land and several area plantation homes. James H. Record, a Union soldier, even left his signature on the walls of the Fairvue Mansion, bequeathing a small piece of history to the ageless stories that continue to be told. In 1882, a prominent New York banker named Charles Reed purchased the home from Adelicia. He changed the spelling from

Fairvue to “Fairview,” and began building his own horse breeding establishment at that time. It was said that at its peak, this famous Thoroughbred nursery, Fairview, had 286 box stalls distributed over multiple professionally-managed, onsite stables and was the epicenter of the equine world right here in Gallatin in the late 1800’s. During his time building his equine enclave, Reed went on to construct the five mare barns and a massive stone stable with a covered track, both still standing today.

Following the Reed era, Fairview was bought by the Sumner County Land Company, known as the “Grasslands Project,” a horse racing venture supported by several wealthy industrialists. After hosting several steeplechases, fox hunts and colorful parties inside the mansion, the Great Depression in 1932 ended the good times at Fairview and the home fell into disarray. Fairview was given a new chance at life when Will Wemyss purchased the plantation home and property in 1934 and returned the spelling of its name to the original

Fairvue with plans to restore the mansion to its former and deserved glory. In 1939 with the help of his wife, Ellen Wemyss, they began the restoration process with hopes of making it their family home. In 1956, the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) flooded 320 acres by building Old Hickory Dam, placing Fairvue on a peninsula that is still outlined today. Under The Wemysses’ stewardship, Fairvue was later designated a National Historic Landmark in 1977. Upon their passing, Fairvue had been lived in by the Wemyss family longer than any of the

In 2002, Leon Moore and his wife Linda bought the home and again worked to restore it for their own family to live in and to call home. Leon was also integral in developing the Fairvue Country Club as well as Foxland Golf Course. The surrounding land that was once part of the original plantation acreage was later developed into beautiful home sites, which now makes up the modern day Fairvue Plantation neighborhood along Nashville Pike in Gallatin! Upon the Moores passing, their daughter Paige and husband Kevin decided to continue the Moore’s legacy and made Fairvue their home, as well. They took on the challenge and continued to renovate and update the antebellum mansion to its full,

restorative beauty. Many parts of the grand home were repurposed to be used at other historic sites during the renovation while other portions for the remodel came from similar historic homes in the area from the same time period. Although the National Historic Landmark title was withdrawn, the intertwining of multiple, generational restorations and personal touches of each family have maintained the Gallatin gem as a beautiful piece of local history that continues to tell the story of life through so many generations, lenses and eras from our historic, quaint piece of Tennessee history.

Relationships, local ties and being experts in your craft are all things that we strive for as we build impactful and meaningful organizations and businesses. Throw in the bonus of being able to run a true family-owned and operated business for over 40 years in your hometown and you are able to see just how special Debbie Wilson’s success and influence have been in our area for decades. In 1976, Debbie’s father, Charles Isham, decided to enroll in a local tax course. After taking that course, Debbie reminisces, “it's almost as if he felt a calling; he realized there was a need to help ordinary people with tax issues.” With that leap of faith, support from Debbie’s mother and a loan from his motherin-law, Charles opened an H&R Block local office in Westmoreland. Immediately, Charles and his team, mostly made up of family members, saw the impact that their local, knowledgeable and “straight-shooter” type of service approach was having. The Westmoreland office was a success early on and that laid the foundation for further opportunity. Soon, Charles saw an opportunity to expand into their hometown of Gallatin, and as a package deal, bought two more local office locations (Gallatin and Portland) bringing the total to three full-service H&R Block offices in the area. Those three local branches kept the family busy, but Charles never compromised on why he got into the business of helping ordinary people in the first place. Debbie remembers that she was essentially raised in these offices and quickly found herself running the family business built by her father. She took the same tax course that her father had taken when she was 17 and later interned at H&R Block all through her college years while earning her degree from Tennessee Tech.

In addition to these three early locations, three others were added in subsequent years (Hartsville, 2003; a second Gallatin location, 2008; Centerville, 2013). If you only have the first, without the second, you have no business being in business!” Adding to the family-oriented structure, Brian Taylor, who serves as Debbie’s Operations Manager, is also married to Debbie’s niece. Brian shares the same zeal for helping people. In 1991, while Brian was in college studying finance, it was Debbie’s niece and Charles who proposed the idea to Brian of studying tax law and theory himself; Brian took on the challenge and never looked back. Brian has served as Operations Manager and other vital roles since 2001. “This is truly a family business; there have been three generations working here. For 46 years we have been invested in our local communities. Our kids were raised and went to school here. Because of this approach, we have clients that also span three generations. Some of our team members have been with us for 40+ years. It becomes a big family working here," says Brian.

After years of renovating and building homes for others, Colt and Kassie Collier were ready to put down roots too by building their own dream home. Colt, a multigenerational Gallatin native, always knew he eventually wanted to settle on the same family farmland where his great-great-grandfather’s home once stood. His grandfather’s original Gallatin home, affectionately referred to as “Pop’s Place,” was built in the 1900s and Colt has many fond childhood memories of time spent at the home. When the Colliers were designing their dream home, they drew inspiration from that same beloved home. Having outdoor space to roam was the most important aspect in their design. The Colliers have five children and the family cherishes the outdoors; room to run, ride bikes, drive go-carts and build forts was indeed a priority. With this in mind, they thoughtfully designed the perfect entertaining space—an aspect of the home building process that is often overlooked. Inside the home, life revolves around the kitchen. Their home features a large, custom, kitchen island that brings the family together and acts as the central meeting place where daily life happens. Separately from their own home build, Colt and Kassie are in their third year of continuing to grow Colt Collier Construction. They work as a team, specializing in new custom builds and renovations of existing homes. By combining their gifts, they are able to deliver dream homes in an individualized way. Colt is the face of the business and enjoys using his gifts of improving and perfecting any build or project he undertakes. During the

home design process, he loves offering suggestions and considerations that his clients may not have yet considered and this is one of the most rewarding parts for him. Colt humanizes the build process and his down to earth confidence is what bridges the gap that typically exists between builder and owner. Having a keen eye for the details and creating solutions throughout both the design and the construction process, he works to implement creative ideas for the homeowner. During a recent renovation, a client wanted to include accents of walnut throughout the kitchen. Colt, having milled several walnut trees when clearing the land for their own home, was able to use that same wood to create open kitchen shelving and a stunning fireplace mantle for the client! The repurposed materials brought personalization to the design and a story to be shared with the next generation and beyond. Kassie supports CCC by functioning as the Operations Manager as well as a local Realtor. In her role as a behind-thescenes planner and developer, she is the conductor of most projects. She meticulously juggles calendars, vendors, clients and all the moving pieces! Using her own gifts to optimize the internal functions of the business, she creates ideas to enhance the client experience. Being able to work so closely with Colt when a client has a specific question, she continues to be integral in the client/builder relationship. Kassie initially obtained her real estate license to help Colt with builds and renovations, but she continues to find joy through working with local families in selling homes, as well. Her construction and renovation knowledge benefits her real estate clients, as she is able to offer first hand advice on costs, value, risks and a different way of looking at the typical real estate transaction.

Colt and Kassie continue to leave their mark on Gallatin and the surrounding areas. When designing your dream kitchen, it’s important to balance timeless features with elements that reflect your personality and design aesthetic. You may not plan to remodel your kitchen each year (does anyone do that?), but that doesn’t mean there aren’t creative ways to keep your space feeling modern and fresh. We spoke with interior designer Brooke Cover about the trends in kitchen design she’s seeing this year, touching on everything from cabinet colors and lighting to tile and countertop combos she’s loving.

TA K I N G T H E C O U N T E R M AT E R I A L U P THE BACKSPLASH Although the iconic subway tile backsplash is timeless in its own right, Brooke says she is seeing a big shift toward marble slab backsplashes — which add drama and depth to the kitchen. Not only is it easier to clean than tile, but a marble backsplash and countertop also sets the tone for the entire space and makes a big statement.

Gone are the days of it being a given to hide the fridge behind custom cabinets. Many brands of appliances are so beautiful and sleek these days, homeowners want to see them rather than hide them behind a cabinet facade. Small appliances, however, are another story. Custom cabinets and “appliance garages” aren’t going away anytime soon. Form and function make them a desirable addition to any kitchen.

I suggest viewing countertop slabs in person vs. a small sample piece because each slab has unique movement and colors. They are all so beautiful and works of art. Taking a trip to the warehouse will really help a client to understand the different types available and see the difference in the look of the material.

WA R M I N G U P THE WHITE We doubt the classic white kitchen will ever completely go out of style, but trends show people are going away from the white kitchen and gray cabinets. They’re opting for white mixed with warmer wood tones, dark greens and blues. Some homeowners are mixing vintage in with the new and modern through butcher block islands or other unique cabinetry choices. Black is making a bold comeback in some kitchens, while others usher in warmth through painted islands or other darker contrast tiles in the bar area. You don’t have to leave behind the timelessness when you warm up your space if you opt for equally timeless black and wood-stained accents. If you want a quick refresh, consider adding pops of wood through cutting boards or other decor accents on countertops or open shelves.

BOLD H A R D WA R E Mixed metals and sizes are having a moment in kitchens across America. Brooke says not to shy away from a variety of sizes of pulls and handles, depending on the drawer and door size. For instance, you may see a mixture of longer pulls on larger drawers and square knobs on smaller glassware cabinets - and that’s more than just ok - that’s recommended. As the heart of the home, kitchens shouldn’t feel sterile and hyper-coordinated - they should feel inviting and tailored to the space. Since no two kitchens will be exactly alike, feel free to boldly mix the hardware sizes and styles to the needs of your kitchen.

C O N T R A S T, C O N T R A S T, CONTRAST! From painted and stained islands to dark lower cabinetry with bright white uppers and mixed lighting fixtures, contrast is the name of the game this year. You’ll see this juxtaposition between clean white and darker colors or even this year’s favorite - greens and blues - all over newly designed kitchens. You’re not breaking any rules by coordinating sculptural pendants over the kitchen island with more vintage-inspired gooseneck sconces over the standalone bar or a chandelier over the eat-in kitchen.
