LIFESTYLE LETTER
2023, Let's Do This!
January 2023 PUBLISHER
Nicole Bell | nicole.bell@citylifestyle.com MANAGING EDITOR
Scott Bell | scott.bell@citylifestyle.com
For many of us, this time of year is full of excitement. It presents us with a reset, new horizons and goals to pursue. But for others, January can be a reminder of failed attempts from years past and the burden of expectation that this year will be different. We approached this issue of Gallatin Lifestyle from a mindset of not supplying quick fixes just to check boxes in the short term but valuing what is sustainable over the long haul. We wanted to provide inspiration for making lasting, realistic, long-term improvements to your physical, emotional and mental health. When it comes to anything in life--business, finance, food, home or personal health--it’s not what you do during those calm, easy days that moves the needle. It’s what you do during those tough days that really makes us a better version of ourselves. For better or worse, we play the hand we are dealt and it's up to us to ensure a better tomorrow than we had today, in all instances! Life is what we make of it and we owe it to ourselves, our friends, family, coworkers and anyone else we come in contact with to be the best we can be, day in and day out. While the new year has become a time to focus on betterment and self-improvement, perhaps a better challenge is to be just a bit better, in everything we do, with each day that passes. If we take this mindset and put it into action, imagine the results that would be on display individually and collectively. So keep going; strive to be just a bit better with each corner of self-roughness that you sand off with every pass of adversity and challenge you overcome. Stretch and remake yourself into the best you can be. What you do and how you find victories in your daily life will lead to a more peaceful, fulfilling and fabulous 2023. Here’s to you! We’re rooting for you and we can't wait to see you shine!

STAYING HEALTHY IN 2023 Sumner Regional Medical Center shares powerful steps to a healthier you “The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” The ancient Chinese proverb still rings true even when applied to our health and self-care. Staying active and managing our various health needs can be daunting but ultimately it begins with taking that first step. In Gallatin, we are fortunate to have so many amazing professionals who strive to keep us healthy and this month Dr. Kelly Barry and Amanda Barton, FNP-C from Sumner Regional Medical Center share with us some healthy habits and ways to stay committed to our own health journeys.
Kelly Barry, MD HighPoint Orthopedic Associates WHAT ARE YOUR TOP THREE TIPS FOR A HEALTHIER LIFESTYLE IN 2023? 1. Eating a balanced, healthy diet consisting of lean proteins, leafy greens, fruits, very low-fat dairy products and whole grains. 2. Exercising regularly, striving for 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise a day. 3. Prioritizing mental health and radiating positivity in everything we do. Maintaining a positive attitude, being around others who have positive outlooks, doing things that are meaningful to you and to others and getting enough sleep at night. These things all help to lead to a healthier mental health lifestyle.
AS AN ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON, WHAT ARE A FEW COMMON INJURIES YOU SEE, AND WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE FOR PREVENTING INJURIES/ILLNESSES? One of the most common fractures I see in patients is hip fractures. Prevention involves two interventions: maintaining
“We’ve all been through a lot the past few years during the COVID-19 pandemic and an unfortunate side effect of that was patients not seeing their primary care providers and specialists as often. I see 2023 as a golden opportunity for folks to take back control of their health and make sure they are getting the treatments they need to live their best and healthiest lives.” -Dr. Kelly Barry

good bone health by taking daily Calcium and Vitamin D3 and fall prevention by good organization-safety inside your home.
WHAT ARE SOME IMPORTANT THINGS TO BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR WHEN IT COMES TO CHRONIC OR ACUTE ILLNESSES AND RECOGNIZING EARLY WARNING SIGNS OR PATTERNS? One of the most common fractures in patients with osteopenia or osteoporosis is a compression fracture in the spine from a low-energy injury (e.g. going over a bad speed bump while driving). While these types of fractures do not require surgery, they can be an indication that your bone density has decreased over time and you should talk with your doctor about testing for osteoporosis and treatment if necessary to prevent future fractures.
WHAT ARE SOME EVERYDAY ACTIVITIES OR EASY, AT-HOME EXERCISES THAT PEOPLE OF ALL AGES CAN DO TO HELP WITH MOBILITY AND TO HELP PREVENT JOINT OR ORTHOPEDIC INJURIES? Walking around your neighborhood is an excellent way to stay mobile. If you have access to a pool, aquatic exercises are very beneficial as they are high-resistance, low-impact activities which are excellent for your bones and joints!
WHAT ARE SOME COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS OR CAUSES THAT ARE NEAR AND DEAR TO YOUR HEART AND/OR THE MISSION OF SUMNER REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER? The Arthritis Foundation is an excellent resource for patients to learn about the different types of arthritis including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and others. Arthritis is the #1 cause of disability in our country and this foundation provides educational resources for patients while funding research for effective treatment strategies.

WHAT ARE SOME COMMON ISSUES YOU REGULARLY SEE THAT COULD ALSO BE BAD HABITS EASILY CORRECTABLE TO THE BENEFIT OF OVERALL HEALTH? Smoking is one of the leading causes of heart disease, lung disease and cancers. Drinking alcohol in excess leads to liver abnormalities, can cause issues with the esophagus, increases risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke and cancers as well. Insomnia due to poor nighttime routines is a big issue that I commonly see as a lot of people use multiple different screens at night whether it is a TV, phone or tablet before they go to bed, negatively affecting their sleep.
WHAT ARE THE IMPORTANT EXAMS/ SCREENINGS/TESTS OR CHECKUPS WE SHOULD HAVE AND HOW DOES THAT CHANGE WITH AGE? For men, colon cancer screenings need to start at age 45 and depending on family history, prostate screening is recommended to begin around age 40. For women, annual breast cancer screenings with a mammogram should start at age 40. Pap smear testing for cervical cancer needs to begin at age 21. Low-dose lung CT screenings for smokers between the ages of 50-80. Bone density screening is important for women after the age of 65 years or for someone younger with risk of having osteoporosis.
HOW DO PROPER NUTRITION AND ADEQUATE REST IMPACT OVERALL HEALTH AND WELL-BEING? Eliminating salt drastically changes blood pressure and reduces high cholesterol. Eliminating fats, fried foods, red meats and pork in diets substantially reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease and decreasing carbohydrates and sugars reduces diabetic complications. In addition to diet, we all need adequate sleep which directly affects the risk of hypertension, heart disease and diabetes; mood and motivation are affected by an empty sleep bank as well.

Amanda Barton, FNP-C Gallatin Family Welllness
HOW DO YOU ENCOURAGE YOUR PATIENTS TO MAKE THEIR EVERYDAY AND OVERALL HEALTH A PRIORITY? Any little progress my patients have, whether that is their labs improving due to diet and exercise, any weight loss, decrease in smoking, decrease in alcohol usage, reduction in fatty fried foods, reducing sweets, etc, deserves praise and I encourage them with each visit. It is also important that they know they do not struggle with these things alone and that we all have our vices when it comes to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. It's a constant journey and progress should be recognized, encouraged and praised!
WHAT ARE SOME COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS OR CAUSES THAT ARE NEAR AND DEAR TO YOUR HEART AND/OR THE MISSION OF SUMNER REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER? The Friends of Sumner Regional Medical Center is a volunteer organization that helps raise money for sleep sacks for all of our babies that are delivered at Sumner Regional. Volunteers also put on food drives that provide food assistance bags that are given to patients in need. Kelly Barry, MD, and Amanda Barton, FNP, are providers with HighPoint Health Partners, serving patients at HighPoint Orthopedic Associates in Gallatin and Gallatin Family Wellness, respectively. HighPoint Health Partners is affiliated with Sumner Regional Medical Center. The team at Sumner Regional Medical Center is grateful you choose to come to us for your health and wellness needs, and we wish each and every one of you a happy, healthy New Year! MINDFUL RESOLUTIONS FOR THE NEW YEAR
ARTICLE BY PATTI GORDON
20
PHOTOGRAPHY BY PAYTON WRIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY
A MEANINGFUL MINDSET FOR EVERY DECISION
M EN TA L WE LLBE IN G | WELLNE S S
When thinking about resolutions for 2023, do you immediately jump to thoughts of diet and exercise? Maybe finances or curbing bad habits? Many of us start off the new year with a goal to get our physical appearances or financial houses in order; but, perhaps there is something even more important that we should be looking at: our own mental health. Emily Runyan, owner and therapist of Tennessee Mental Wellness in Gallatin, understands the benefits of healthy goals both mentally and physically. Incorporating her love for the outdoors, Tennessee Mental Wellness is a locally-owned, independently-operated, boutique-style therapy center complete with modern seating, natural lighting and color palettes that could place you at her alma mater in scenic Utah. This is also where Emily’s love for the outdoors and passion to help others who are on their own healing journey began. Emily previously was an instructor at a wilderness treatment program for at-risk youth in the summers. Helping build fires, hiking trails, teaching
survival skills and grounding in nature set the tone for how she approaches her therapy style: back to the basics with the mind and body and staying true to your authentic self. Emily also strives to create a culture for therapists that is far from the stuffy settings typically seen in other offices. These tactics have rightfully earned her business the ‘Best of Gallatin 2022: Mental Health Services’ award. As both a therapist and business owner, she has carefully selected counselors who would best fit the business and community values. “When searching for a therapist for my practice, I try to find someone who strives for excellence in clinical care, evidence-based therapy, who honors clients who are investing time and money into their healing and is an authentic and empathetic person,” Emily explains. Apart from being a licensed therapist, Emily is also a former certified Personal Trainer, Weight Management Specialist and Fitness Nutrition Specialist. Understanding that mind and body are parallels, she used those skills and knowledge to become a Wellness Coach and now teaches others in the same disciplines. Wellness Coaching is offered as a group class in her clinic and includes themes of connecting with yourself to understand hunger, appetite, body movement unique to your lifestyle and creating healthy habits for the long term. “I want to break the mold that personal trainers are by the book and help people understand the importance of movement. If dancing in the kitchen is their idea of a workout, then we’re going to make that their workout. We don’t need to drag our bodies through non-meaningful movements that won’t help,” says Emily. Losing the archaic stigma of seeking therapy options continues to be a hidden benefit of the social media age and constant scrolling of the Covid homestays and shutdowns. Although it’s easy to self-diagnose from the mass of
information we see every day, a question that comes up is when should you stop the scroll and reach out? Emily encourages trying the free consultations offered to identify a therapist and/or path that may be right for you and for the right season of your life. It is common to have different therapists for different struggles; anxiety, depression, divorce recovery, postpartum, teens, LGBTQIA+, corporate seminars and group therapy are just a few of the services that Tennessee Mental Wellness offers. Virtual and telehealth visits for those with busy schedules who cannot make it into the office are also options. Adding to her own mental well-being, Emily still embraces the outdoors, loves paddle boarding, hitting the slopes with her sons and hiking any chance she gets. She also continues to make a few resolutions of her own for 2023: adding an outdoor serenity area at TMW and continuing to give back to the community by adding a free weekly group workshop for those who do not have access to quality, affordable mental wellness care. tnmentalwellness.com, @tnmentalwellness

No-Bake, Peanut Butter Balls A GLUTEN-FREE, GRAIN-FREE, SWEET AND SIMPLE TREAT
prep time: 15 min cook time: 0 min ready in: 45 min yield: 28 balls ingredients: • 1-¼ cups, natural, peanut butter (no added fat or sugar) • ½ cup, low-sugar maple syrup • 1 teaspoon, vanilla extract • ¼ teaspoon, salt • ¼ cup, coconut flour • 1-½ cups, semi-sweet chocolate chips or chopped chocolate (use vegan chocolate, if desired) • 1 tablespoon, coconut oil (use refined for no coconut taste)
directions: 1. In a medium mixing bowl, stir together the peanut butter, maple syrup, vanilla and salt until combined. Stir in coconut flour. Place in freezer for 30 minutes or until dough is semifirm for rolling. 2. Prepare the coating. Mix together chopped chocolate and coconut oil in a small bowl that can be used to melt the chocolate and dip the balls in. 3. Shape into 2-inch balls and place on a tray small enough to fit in your freezer. Place tray in the freezer to let them firm up more. 4. Dip the balls one at a time into melted chocolate with a chocolate dipping utensil or spoon, allowing excess chocolate to drip off. Place on a waxed paper-lined baking sheet, cover and refrigerate until ready to serve. 5. Refrigerate for up to a week or freeze for a few months. Can also be kept at room temperature for a few days (if it's not too warm).

Dr. Jennie Lumpkins (known previously to her patients as Dr. A, or Dr. Alexander, from her maiden name), has experienced the many ebbs of flows of life here in Gallatin. Like so many of our locals, Dr. Lumpkins was raised in the Gallatin area, left to pursue her educational and professional path, and returned home to root and immerse herself back in the community in which she was raised and loves. Alexander is one of those well-known names in Gallatin. For over a century, her family has owned and operated funeral homes in our area, spanning five generations. Naturally after college, she worked in the family business at Alexander Funeral Home as well. During those five years in the funeral industry, she went through some trying times of her own as she herself experienced the loss of an aunt, her own father and her grandmother in a short span and quickly realized she did not want to spend her life, “holding families together,” during traumatic times, as she reminisces. While reflecting upon the aftermath of her father’s stroke, Dr. Lumpkins recalls the countless medications he was prescribed. She watched as his health continued to deteriorate, furthering her resolve to find a way to help people feel better without the constant barrage of medications. She was resolute in finding a way to help people participate in the joyful moments in life and not solely focus on chronic illnesses with traditional management. These realizations led her to ultimately pursue a chiropractic degree at Life University where she graduated Cum Laude in 2018. After working briefly in Alabama, Dr. Lumpkins returned to Gallatin and knew her pathway forward. She made the leap that not many healthcare professionals are able to take: she opened her own practice. With that leap of faith, Greater Nashville Health Institute was born. At GNHI, Dr. Lumpkins offers a refreshingly old-school, holistic approach to healthcare. Located in downtown Gallatin at 425 E. Main Street, GNHI opened its doors just over a year ago and already Dr. Lumpkins has seen so many health and healing stories that truly have helped the greater population live healthier lives. True chiropractic care aims to allow the body to start a healing process on its own. Chiropractic medicine is one of the oldest modalities used and Dr. Lumpkins works with everyone from newborns, to pregnant mamas, young children, teenagers, adults and seniors. Sometimes one treatment is sufficient while others require an ongoing plan of action, each patient having a treatment path tailored to him/her. One of Dr. Lumpkins’ favorite things about chiropractic care takes her back to her first job when she was just sixteen. It was then that she spent a summer working for a local

chiropractor’s office where she began to notice little things like ice being used to alleviate headaches and chiropractic adjustments providing immediate relief of back aches and other common pains without traditional medications. Dr. Lumpkins became fascinated with the holistic approach to healthcare and the level of attention to each patient that was provided. Although it wasn’t until years later that she decided to pursue chiropractic medicine, those early Gallatin memories shaped her both personally and professionally. Dr. Lumpkins prides herself on offering her time with an empathetic understanding to her patients at GNHI. Creating a laid-back setting and approachable attitude, she truly enjoys spending time with her patients while learning to read their bodies, being able to deliver the best adjustment possible for a particular composition and need. The greatest feedback she receives from patients is when they tell her she “just feels like family.” Combining that with seeing patient progress and health victories achieved with each person she contacts, Dr. Lumpkins truly can see the difference being made and such a need that she is able to meet for the public. In addition to chiropractic care at GNHI, Dr. Lumpkins now offers one of the best neuropathy programs for reversing or alleviating symptoms of neuropathy without medication. This program boasts a 94% success rate across the country and is another example of seeing a need and growing her professional capabilities to meet that community challenge head-on. She is also finishing up her Webster Certification, an amazing technique for helping mothers balance their pelvis, sacrum, muscles and ligaments for childbirth! The Webster Technique can even be used to gently adjust mothers with breech babies so that the babies have the freedom to move from breech to head-down position. In her time away from the office, Dr. Lumpkins enjoys traveling with her husband, Michael. She is a huge fan of tackling home improvement projects, loves exercising and enjoys keeping her hands nimble by crocheting blankets and stuffed animals. greaternashvillehealthinstitute.com, @greaternashvillehealth

New Year's Resolutions to Win in 2023 THREE EASY WAYS TO ENSURE YOUR NEW YEAR IS PRODUCTIVE AND REWARDING
ARTICLE BY SCOTT BELL | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED 1: Organize daily habits: set routines, keep a log, inventory how you spend your time, set reminders to maximize time usage and to better navigate your daily tasks, use a planner, create checklists and critique your progress. 2: Perfect a unique skill: instead of focusing on improving every area of your life all at once, focus on one or two items you excel at or enjoy and make a commitment to master these areas first, later moving on to others. 3: Automate everyday life: use all resources available to increase productivity and efficiencies, use auto-pay functions for bills, meal prep and cook in bulk, schedule appointments and vacations well in advance and set aside time for yourself before you need it.
