Changing paint color is a great way to freshen up a space. Trends have moved towards warm whites with different fin ishes. This keeps everything clean, fresh and the background palette neutral for accessorizing with different colors. Moodier colors are also making a comeback, but a neutral palette still encourages deep taupes, grays, blues and warm earthy greens to join. This is popular in specialty areas like dining rooms and home offices.

Patterns and textures are extremely popu lar in wallpaper, currently. These are great in powder rooms to make a statement and to give a pop of color. A unique touch is using these same colors on the back panels of white built-ins, making shelving decor stand out while providing a floating illu sion on lighter-colored shelving. Wallpaper is fun and easy to incorporate as it contin ues to make a huge comeback.
Incorporating different sizes of rugs is helpful and easy! Layering with a larger, woven jute rug as a base and a smaller, patterned rug on top will add dimension to any room (not to mention more affordable, too). If you want to change colors later, you already have your larger base rug and can simply switch out the top rug to freshen up the space.

Karey describes her art as whimsically functional. Having studied the arts in college, it wasn’t until seven years ago that Karey fell in love with working with clay and began crafting pottery. Since then, she has done a lot of refining and now routinely incorporates other techniques as she puts her own touches on modern pottery art. Traci always joked with her kids that the only thing keeping her from being an artist was a lack of supplies. During the pandemic in 2020, her kids bought her a canvas, paint and brushes—the rest is history! Traci began painting birds as a tribute and reminder of when her children were young and they would draw birds and make up stories about them. Now, much of Traci’s work centers around a bird often hiding in her paintings as a continued uniqueness and tribute. Glen grew up drawing anything and everything he could from a young age. After college, he began to explore painting as a way to challenge himself even more—first watercolors then oils and acrylics. Much of Glen’s inspiration for his paintings come from the countryside in which he grew up around West Texas. Glen says it’s important to him to paint anything he can as accurately as possible and he puts a great amount of research effort into any subject he paints. As a classically trained artist with a vast body of work, Glen still today finds time to do daily drawings for close friends and family members.

A carpenter by trade for nearly 30 years, Curtis Wasmer, owner and founder of Built on the Rock, has always enjoyed working with unique items. Most recently, this love and eye for creativ ity has led him to using and repurposing a medium that many overlook:Turningdriftwood. uniquecreations into a business, Curtis and his wife wanted to name their business after something that ref erenced their Christian faith without being too assertive. “If you’ve ever been to Sunday School, you know, but if you hav en’t and you don’t get the reference, it’s still a solid name,” says Curtis. In addition to that, Built on the Rock is governed by six core values - integrity, originality, craftsmanship, excel lence in service, creativity and environmental consciousness. While living near the Ohio River, Curtis began bringing driftwood pieces home to create gifts for family and friends. Now, working out of his workshop in Nashville, Curtis blends his carpentry, remodeling and contractor experience with an artistic vision using driftwood (recovered along the rivers here in Middle America) to craft some seriously beautiful (and functional) works of art. All of the driftwood pieces Curtis works on are sourced by him personally from the Cumberland River, Ohio River, Tennessee River and Mississippi River. After finding a suitable piece of natural driftwood, Curtis looks for a solid and unique piece that sets it apart from oth ers. “I embrace the natural character of the piece and all of its interesting details,” explains Curtis. “A lot of artists tend to want to fix or hide the natural blemishes in a piece of wood, but I tend to stay away from epoxy, plastics and fillers and rather embrace the imperfections.” The design of each piece is unique in its own way and the piece he works with has to speak to him, as well. The inspiration comes from the piece itself and Curtis’s goal is to keep the character of the pieces he finds in anything he crafts from it. He doesn’t morph something into a piece of decor or furniture that doesn’t fit with the nature of the piece.

Outside of the greater Nashville area, customers from Florida and even internationally (Japan, Germany, England and Ireland) have taken to Curtis’s pieces. Being able to express and project feelings through driftwood and showcase creativity through a particular piece is what makes each piece unique.

In addition to now having Built on the Rock as a growing business, supporting local groups is a passion, too. Built on the Rock directly supports a group in Nashville called Open Table, a grassroots organi zation advocating for the homeless here locally. Curtis also supports an animal rescue in Nashville, Piccolo Farms. He has donated drift wood decor pieces to the Cumberland River Compact as they look for decor that directly correlates to the river they strive to protect.

Currently, the driftwood hanging light fixture that is on display at the Troll House Cottage in Donelson is a creation favorite of Curtis’s. This piece, from any angle, is really showcased as a driftwood chandelier and Curtis was able to incorporate a more contemporary feel with LED lighting. He likes to veer towards the larger pieces that really make a statement but pieces that find a forever home are his true favorite.
