To The Women Who Continue to Inspire Us
Stacey Norman stacey@plumpoppyphotography.com
Our May issue is dedicated to celebrating all the women in our lives and in our community! As I reflect on the many women in my life, I am thankful for each one and the impact they have made on me directly. Women deserve to be celebrated for their extraordinary contributions to society, remarkable triumphs and unmatched fearlessness. In our May women’s issue, we highlight some of our very own incredible women in Gallatin who continue to influence and make a positive impact, not only at their place of business or homes, but also in our community! Women celebrating women and encouraging each other to succeed rather than competing with each other is a beautiful and rewarding thing. In this month’s issue we are sharing stories of women who have made their mark in Gallatin and our lives in one way or another. We are also recognizing a few local entrepreneurs and women who are finding ways to give back to our community that have left me inspired. We'll learn new home décor and design tips from a local home design expert and Realtor, how one woman’s struggle with starting a family turned others' struggles into hope and miracles, and how a mother-daughter-duo strive to create an empowering atmosphere while promoting authenticity in their boutique and clothing brand in downtown Gallatin. Every single one of these ladies who I’ve gotten to know inspire me and I hope they inspire you in some capacity, as well! In a world that thrives on competition, let’s take time to encourage each other, appreciate the beauty in everyone and lift each other up, perhaps even a stranger. I also encourage you to take time to reflect on the inspirational women in your own life and reach out to them to thank them for their impact on you personally. You won’t regret it! Here's to all of the amazing women in Gallatin! Cheers to you and to the stories that make you so special!

ADVENTURE CANINE TRAINING
Whether it’s nature adventures, public events, or simple walks around the neighborhood, many dog owners don’t realize that teaching obedience behaviors is only a small portion of what goes into training a dog for the real world. Relationship and Play make up the foundation of our training program. Our primary goal is to help owners understand their dog’s biological needs and genetic tendencies and to educate them on how to motivate and mold each individual dog into the best versions of themselves.
Our board and train program comes with additional private sessions and access to our monthly group training and Pack Walks. It’s about educating the owners once the dogs have a solid foundation. On top of learning, the dogs get to explore woods and creeks every day! They all have an absolute blast with us.

Words of Wisdom from Gallatin Women GALLATIN'S LEADING LADIES SHARE LETTERS TO THEIR YOUNGER SELVES
Dear Nursing Student Susan, You will see things that you want to question and improve, such as communication with patients and families and ways to improve processes. My advice to you is to have patience and work with leadership to identify new ways to improve. You’ll tend to be direct, but learning to be diplomatic will serve your mission better. You have a knack for seeing needs; focus on what you can do to help others see what you see. You’ll see patients and families need constant reassurance, education about illnesses, medications and what to do next. Nursing professionals need those same things – reassurance, reinforcing education (because healthcare is constantly changing!) and help navigating a complex workplace. As an RN, you set the tone and will help your teams understand priorities. Teaching teams how best to work together is a big part of your role. One way to change the healthcare system and impact outcomes for patients is to learn as much as you can about leadership. Read everything you can, advance your education and organizational change. You are a natural leader; you will be called upon early to lead large groups of caregivers and team members. It’s your love and dedication to community that will help you lead because people will see that your heart is in it. Create a bucket list early and work on the things that are most important to you! Lastly, my advice to you, young Susan, is to have fun along the way. Life is short and balance is essential. Do not put off the family trips, visit Mom often and be there when they need you. You will be successful at work, so don’t worry much about what other people think. Take time for yourself, learn healthy lifestyles and have more fun! Susan Peach, RN, BSN, MBA Market President, HighPoint Health System CEO, Sumner Regional Medical Center

Dear Kimmy, The days ahead will be filled with exciting things. You will encounter opportunities that offer great joy, but also moments that bring you sorrow and heartache. The trick will be learning how to navigate each as they occur and moving on to the next when your heart is ready. Educate yourself but also allow yourself space to be curious. Your education is something no one can ever take away from you. Take time to learn whenever you can and from whoever you can. Explore new places, take trips, ask questions, chase the sense of wonder that you have. Study abroad. Live in new places. Take the time to get to know people and ask them questions. Learn their why, their story and their passions. People are absolutely fascinating. When you walk into a room of people you don’t know, choose the uncomfortable and sit with the stranger. Give compliments to break the ice, but mean what you say. Don’t ever forget to smile. Much of life will feel like a race to the end of that day. Don’t wish time away as you can’t get it back once it’s gone. Don’t wait to tell someone how you feel and don’t wait for the perfect moment; it arrives every morning and it may not come again. Take chances. Celebrate everything. The time you have with your parents is precious. Get to know them, ask them about their childhood, their dreams and their favorite memories. Document things and don’t wait to do it. Call and go visit--often. Always put yourself first. Love yourself along the way. And, if you want something, go and get it. Put in the work and make it happen. Lastly, never forget that passion is powerful; let it shine. And, when all else fails, love more. Kim Baker, CEO, Gallatin Area Chamber of Commerce

Dear Young Jordyn Marie, You will be a force to be reckoned with. You were born with an unfair stack of odds built against you, but you will defy them all. You will be tough in a many ways but very soft when you need to be. Whatever the world does to you, don’t lose heart knowing when to love somebody through their darkness. Your heart will be used against you in life--have one anyway. Your failures in life will drive you to succeed. Success will be easy for you because you know too well what the other side looks like. You will learn loss way too early in life. Appreciate your mom for what she is and love her to the end. Learn everything you can from your grandparents while you still have them. You will make a lot of mistakes--own them and do better next time. You will walk through some very dark valleys and one day you will turn around and see that Jesus walked beside you through all of them. He will bless you with a best friend that you get lucky enough to call your husband and two kids that put air in your lungs everyday. Take pictures, so many of them! Enjoy the days with no plans. Start praying for your kids’ spouses the day they are born. Don’t waste the days worrying about wanting more--you have everything your heart needs. Be intentional with everyone you can-it will mean more to them than you know. People will want you to fall. Love them anyway. Don’t be afraid to be loud or courageous or brave when you are commanded to be. There will be times in life where you stand alone--stand anyway. God created you to shine and, you, Jordyn, will do just that. Jordyn Clark, Entrepreneur & Owner of Studio 1:9

When staging your home to sell or to simply showcase for a dinner party or gathering, determining how to style, where to start and what to include can be a daunting task. Local home design expert and Realtor, Sarah Kidd, stops by to share with us her tips on how to ensure your home has those extras that will turn heads and how to add those special details. STAGING TIP 1: Declutter all countertops. This includes kitchen counters, bathroom countertops, side tables, nightstands, coffee tables and desks. All chargers, books and notepads should be put away and out of sight as if nobody lives there. STAGING TIP 2: Add light décor. After decluttering, add small touches of décor using fresh flowers, decorative baskets, throw pillows, whatever you can find, but keep it minimal. Fresh flowers give off an elegant, almost regal, feel to a home. On a sofa I like to use only two pillows; give them a good fluff and set them up straight. It is amazing how a clean, well-styled home can impress potential buyers. STAGING TIP 3: Touch up your paint. Take the time to walk around your home and inspect all of your walls. If you have young kids or animals, you may notice quite a bit of needed touch up. Use a medium-sized paint brush and paint using vertical strokes. It goes on quickly and will make your home look freshly painted and again making the buyer feel like they are in a “newer” home. STAGING TIP 4: Bake or use a Plug-In. If baking is your jam, bake some fresh cookies for an open house and let the aroma fill the home. Baking can bring up nostalgic memories and help someone envision your home as their potential home. If you aren’t a baker, no big deal; use some fragrance plug-ins in a few of your rooms to give off a fresh scent. My favorites smell like fresh laundry, or springtime! If you want to make your home look professionally staged and you have a modest budget to do it, there are certain things to remember when decorating a space. 1. Always use BIG pieces. If you are wanting art on your wall or new throw pillows on your couch, get good sized items. Most people underestimate the size of rooms and furniture. You want wall art to take up a good portion of the wall and be pleasing to look at. You also do not want pillows to be washed out by the couch itself. 2. Neutrals always work best. Not everyone is a fan of neutrals, but if you are trying to sell your home, using soft, soothing colors will appeal to most buyers. Don’t overthink it! Most neutrals will match and work well together. Wood tones and creams work perfectly together, as well.

3. Splurge on window treatments. It is crazy how much a beautiful set of curtains can change a room for the better. Always place your curtains at least seven inches above the window, this will make your ceiling appear higher and add depth and warmth to your home. One of the perks of being a real estate agent is getting to explore and play with one of my other passions, home design.

Luckily, the two tie in together and I am able to help home sellers with staging, décor and design. Whenever I have a listing appointment, we do a walk through of the home and discuss staging ideas and décor tips. I promise it is simpler than you would think; you do not have to go out and buy all new furniture as some would assume. Take what you have and simplify everything!

Coach Kela Smith and The Hormone Puzzle Society Gallatin’s Fertility and Wellness Coach is Making a Difference Around the World and in Our Own Backyard ARTICLE BY NICOLE BELL | PHOTOGRAPHY BY PAYTON WRIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY As a women’s health hub for fertility, hormone education and pregnancy-related wellness, The Hormone Puzzle Society fills a big need locally and globally. Gallatin resident, Kela Smith, created The Hormone Puzzle Society to help women and couples who may be struggling with infertility, hormones and pregnancy approach challenges through a different lens. Thirteen years ago, Kela met her husband, they soon married and began to plan a family. After mapping out what that would look like for them, it became apparent that a simple roadmap wasn’t that simple after all. After undergoing multiple tests, she was

quickly diagnosed with “unexplained infertility” at the age of 36. Kela was told that if she wanted to become pregnant, she would have to undergo IUI and if that didn’t work IVF. It was at that moment, Kela questioned everything and pondered why she was being told to undergo a medical procedure to force a naturally occurring procedure when there was nothing wrong with her medically. After leaving the doctor’s office, Kela was determined to use IUI or IVF only as an end, if needed, but not as a starting point. Through research, functional medicine, optimal nutrition and a targeted lifestyle

plan, Kela was able to reverse her diagnosis and became pregnant, naturally, with her first child and then again with her second. Today, her two miracle babies are six and eight. It was after her second child that she knew she wanted to pursue her passion and work in the field of holistic health. “It was my hope that no other couple would suffer the way my husband and I did,” says Kela. Five years, six certifications later and now pursuing a PhD in natural and holistic medicine, Kela is helping other couples as they begin their path to parenthood. Kela works with several couples locally, nationally and around the world, offering a plethora of services for fertility, hormones and pregnancy in tandem with mind, body and spiritual health for overall wellness. Services include one-on-one coaching, self-study/online programs, membership club, books, podcasts and online summits. The Hormone Puzzle Society’s motto is, “test don’t guess.” For those struggling with infertility, Kela’s clients start with a comprehensive, at-home hormone test that really dives into the root of why the symptom is happening in the first place. Kela strives to treat the mind, body and spirit and working together helps guide them to total body wellness through functional medicine. Kela explains, “I’m bringing in many different modalities based on what each person needs and I’m guiding them to optimal health and vitality so their symptoms go away and their body performs the way it was created to; this is true HEALTHcare. It isn’t replacing pharmaceuticals and surgery with holistic supplements and natural foods, but creating total body harmony and wellness.” Kela’s commitment to helping couples through difficult moments, in hopes that they do not have to suffer through the misery of hormonal issues, is her true passion. Kela says, “working in this field has never been easy; I help my clients deal with some

very heavy things, but I wouldn’t change a single thing about the work I do.” Personally, Kela’s love for Gallatin has also led her to become more involved in the community, at Beech Elementary where her children attend, locally in her neighborhood and at her place of worship--Long Hollow Church. “I love giving back and Gallatin is an amazing place to call home,” she says. “I want to continue to pour into myself, my kids and my family, raising my boys right and nurturing my loving relationships.” What’s on the horizon? Kela is working on a line of fertility teas and women’s health massage oils that will be available this summer. Her third book, The Hormone Puzzle – Optimizing Pregnancy will be available on Amazon and on her website, coachkela.com, this June. Kela sums it all up by saying, “after all these years and all my struggles I can truly say this is what I was put on earth to do.”

Honey + Suede Spring Fashion Show Takes Center Stage DOWNTOWN GALLATIN BOUTIQUE SHOWS OFF SPRING COLLECTION IN PRIVATE EVENT ARTICLE BY NICOLE BELL PHOTOGRAPHY BY PAYTON WRIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY
Spring and summer fashion is in full effect and downtown Gallatin was the place to be for Honey + Suede Boutique’s private event to show off their latest collection and the hottest trends for the warm months ahead. Shelby Mills, Co-Founder of Honey + Suede Boutique, shares the spring and summer fashion outlook for 2022. “This season, neutrals take a back seat to updated and upgraded pastels and brighter colors. Pastel blues, pinks, greens and purples are making their presence known in a big way. Light and airy dresses are showing up in many spring and summer lines and will have a huge presence this season as we continue to seek ways to be outdoors and in the sunshine!” Honey + Suede Boutique, owned by mother-daughter-duo Kelly and Shelby Mills, has quickly made a name for itself in downtown Gallatin and has quite the faithful following for those looking for the latest fashion and everyday items. Having started H+S in 2020 out of their home garage, The Millses have grown Honey + Suede’s collection and influence and now operate out of their beautiful storefront on the square in downtown Gallatin at 122 N. Water Avenue.

ARTICLE BY SCOTT BELL PHOTOGRAPHY BY PAYTON WRIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY
In March, we hosted an evening to celebrate the launch of Gallatin Lifestyle and we could not have asked for a better evening to do so! Gallatin Lifestyle exists to connect community, to showcase the people and places around us, and to tell the stories of what makes Gallatin amazing. We want to extend our thanks for all of the support, kind words and excitement we have received since beginning this journey. This celebration is in honor of you and everyone who calls Gallatin home!
