LO C K 4 M O U N TA I N B I K E PA R K 1598 LOCK 4 ROAD MOUNTAIN BIKE PARK As one of the most popular mountain bike parks in all of the Southeast, riders come from all around to experience the Lock 4 trails. The trails are divided into three different sections, totaling nine miles in length and giving riders of all levels and ages a chance to enjoy mountain biking along scenic trails with phenomenal views of the river and waterfront. The trails can also be used for trail running and hiking explorations, as well!

The trailhead begins at the Historic Douglass-Clark House and the winding, flat paved trail provides the perfect serenity for a day hike or evening stroll. With a small trail bridge passing over the creek as you near the lower greenway area, the calm creek’s tranquil waters provide a picturesque beauty and unmatched serenity so close to home.

Bledsoe Creek State Park A natural, wooded paradise located less than 10 minutes away from downtown Gallatin, this 2.8 mile loop is perfect for a leisurely stroll, trail hike or nature walk with your dog. The trail is well-cared for with sprawling views of the water and plenty of nature and wildlife all around.

Triple Creek Dog Park Gallatin’s largest park has plenty of paved walking trails and grassy areas to let your pup explore. It also boasts a dedicated, off-leash dog park where pups can mingle, roam and play with others.

Centennial Park If your exploration takes you into Nashville, Centennial Park has immense green space for trailblazing and exploring, as well as an offleash dog play area. Don’t forget to check out the Parthenon while you’re there!

A Trailhead Journey DR. J.D. SHADBURNE SHARES HIS LOVE OF EXPLORATION AND GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY

of Giving Back

A trailhead is a point at which a path begins. It’s where information is shared, where people come together and where an adventure unfolds. Hikers and adventure goers know how important a trailhead is, as it is, by definition, the beginning of a journey.

Embarking on his own journey in opening Gallatin’s newest, specialized, pediatric dental office, Dr. J.D. Shadburne could think of no better name or way to describe his new office than in the same manner--Trailhead Pediatric Dentistry.

For Dr. Shadburne, there is a lot in a name and adventuring has long been a passion. He, along with his wife Sarah, and now with their two children (Isla, 2, and Tate, born March 2022), has a goal of visiting all 63 National Parks. Dr. Shadburne says his love for hiking and exploring came while hiking Mount Leconte in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park for the first time.

“I was blown away by the sound of the streams, the overlooks and the friendly hiker culture,” remembers Dr. Shadburne. To date, the Shadburne family has made it to 14 of the 63 National Parks and they continue to make memories with each trip.

In April, Trailhead Pediatric Dentistry officially opens its doors in Gallatin. The office itself is a unique and inspiring space with everything geared toward the ultimate experience for pediatric patients. The office is immersive with blue skies and an actual trail on the floor. There are log cabin treatment rooms and a “off road” room where patients can sit in a Jeep for their cleaning and exam! There is even a room with over 1000 LED lights installed in the ceiling to make it feel like you are camping under the stars. Dr. Shadburne was also very intentional with personnel he hired and made it a point to find the friendliest people who genuinely enjoy improving the lives of children. “They are the lifeblood of the practice,” says Dr. Shadburne.

“It is about more then teeth in our office; our mission is to guide and empower the trailblazing kids of Gallatin,” Dr. Shadburne says. This is also demonstrated in the out-of-office commitments he keeps, as well. Dr. Shadburne works closely with Friends of Gallatin Miracle Park and his office has also partnered with the Miracle League of Gallatin--a newly formed buddy-baseball league. The Miracle League of Gallatin is an inclusive program that recognizes the uniqueness of the individual and promotes the love of baseball for all! For every five new patients that Trailhead Pediatric Dentistry sees, the office sponsors a local athlete in the Miracle League which allows him/her to play free of charge.

With so much good going on in the community and at the office, what lies on the horizon for Trailhead and Dr. Shadburne?

“We’re focused on growing our team at Trailhead and deepening our impact in the community,” he says, as well as, “adjusting to life as a family of four! Our kids keep us busy and we are trying to soak up every minute.”

Charcuterie. For Lindsey Hickman, owner of BYH in Gallatin, and Alyssa Connelly, Lindsey’s good friend and business associate, charcuterie means much more than just fancy meats and cheeses.

Four years ago, Lindsey and Alyssa’s passion for connecting people to local farm goods inspired them to do more in the community.

They began teaching classes and holding events to demonstrate the importance of incorporating healthy, local foods into everyday life. Seeing success in their efforts, that eventually led them to open a local market in a small, northern California town, which still thrives today as a full, farm-to-fork restaurant called The Barn and Pantry.

Today, Alyssa and her family live just outside of Gallatin and they found a perfect spot to bring something unique to Gallatin. This new venture in Middle Tennessee allowed Lindsey and Alyssa to continue to do what they love-working with local farmers and making local goods available to the community! The connections made here led them to open a charcuterie café, Bless Your Heart, or BYH, offering unique breakfast and lunch options, as well as charcuterie boards, grazing tables and shareable dessert boards. BYH is a warm and inviting restaurant just off the square in downtown Gallatin with an upbeat and social atmosphere. “Our BYH menu offers warm breakfast and brunch items like housemade seasonal quiche, Belgian waffles, tea sandwiches and scones; it’s a place for people to gather, converse, eat, snack and spend time together to relish life’s moments and enjoy the company you’re with,” says Lindsey.

Opening a restaurant is not without processes. From BYH Board + Bubbles to BYH Brunch + Boards, obtaining a liquor license in their downtown space was a challenge.

Due to local and state regulations, and in combination with BYH’s layout/size, their licensing to serve alcohol was initially denied. Lindsey and Alyssa quickly pivoted to a bringyour-own-bottle service. One month after their grand opening celebration, and after pursuing different options for approval, BYH was approved to sell liquor by the drink in March! Their curated cocktail list includes high-end whiskeys, ryes, bourbons, TC Craft Tequila, high-end reds, sparkling wine and of course mimosas!

E xplore t he Ken t u c k y B o u r b o n Tr a i l KENTUCKY BOURBON ROOTS RUN DEEP, EVEN INTO MIDDLE TENNESSEE

Bourbon whiskey has long been a staple of Tennessee, Kentucky and true southern Americana. Over the past decade, however, bourbon has been gaining popularity across the United States and internationally as more people continue to explore the complexities and history that make up this sweet, spicy and smokey spirit that is both legally-regulated and legally-defined by U.S. law.

According to Title 27 in the Code of Federal Regulations, bourbon must be made in the U.S., contain at least 51% corn in its mash bill, must be aged in new charred oak barrels, must not contain any flavors or additives and must be bottled at 80-proof or higher.

Whether it’s in a cocktail, on the rocks, or neat, everyone has their favorite bourbon and everyone has a reason for enjoying it.

Beyond consumption, Kentucky’s Bourbon Trail is a mere stone’s throw away from us in Middle Tennessee and becomes an exploration must to appreciate the history, culture and art that bourbon makers have been crafting and perfecting for generations.
