Welcome to our annual Food & Drink issue, and it’s also our 5-year Anniversary this month!! We are grateful to all of you for your support and we wouldn’t be here without you! And a fond welcome to a “true” Fall month in North Central Florida. As the leaves begin to change and the temperatures finally cool a bit, it’s a perfect time to focus on food. In this issue, we’re celebrating the food and drink in and just outside of our area, and even a “secret” Speakeasy! Although we always love to share our local Culinary Creations and food and drink recipes with you on a regular basis, October is our most food-focused issue of the year, filled with some of our favorite dishes. Food brings us all together, and whether we’re sharing a meal at home with friends and family or enjoying a night out on the town, the time spent while enjoying food is invaluable. You’ll notice the restaurants we’re featuring here do not shy from flavor and a sense of adventure and a commitment to their craft, and we encourage you to check them out, if you haven’t already. And, we’ll even share with you ideas for designing and building the perfect kitchen! October is also a very special month for us because it is our anniversary, and we will be celebrating all month long!! Happy 5th Anniversary to us!! And thank you all so much for your continued support – it means the world to us. Here’s to savoring every bite this fall, and as always – thank you so much for reading, and see you around town!

MEAT ME AT Fehrenbacher’s

GAINESVILLE 'S BEST KEPT SECRET FOR H A N D M A D E M E AT S A N D E AT S

Tucked into downtown Gainesville’s 4th Avenue Food Park, Fehrenbacher’s Meats and Eats has grown from a farmers market hobby into a beloved butcher shop, retail store, and deli. Chef Adam Fehrenbacher, whose career spans 30 years & seven countries, first opened the storefront location in 2017. Every product is made without additives, preservatives, or fillers, using traditional techniques and locally sourced ingredients. What began as Fehrenbacher’s Artisan Sausage has expanded into Fehrenbacher’s Meats & Eats offering premium cuts of locally raised beef, organic chicken, cured and smoked meats, plus handcrafted sausages alongside inspired sandwiches, salads, wraps, and charcuterie boards. Guests can enjoy their meal with ice cold beers from local breweries under a covered patio while taking in the beautiful nature at the 4th Ave food park. Open six days a week, Tuesday through Sunday, Fehrenbacher’s remains one of Gainesville’s premier culinary destinations. “What a fun couple of days filming with this Guy for our episode African, Sicilian & Sausage for the Food Network Diners Drive Ins & Dives.”

A Dining Destination Just outside Gainesville, an unexpected dining experience pairs exceptional cuisine with quiet Old Florida beauty. Ask almost anyone who’s recently discovered Black Prong Whiskey Bar & Grill, and you’ll hear the same thing: “How did we not know this was here?” Tucked into Goethe State Forest at Black Prong Resort is a restaurant that’s quickly becoming a local favorite. Guests return for elevated comfort food, seasonal specials, handcrafted cocktails, a thoughtfully curated wine list, and an extensive whiskey collection that rivals restaurants in much larger cities. Inside, warm hospitality and a unique tree-filled atmosphere create an inviting setting for everything from casual dinners to special celebrations. Whether you’re planning a date night, meeting friends for dinner, enjoying cocktails after work, or celebrating a special occasion, it’s the kind of place worth the drive. For many guests, the biggest surprise isn’t just the food. It’s realizing that one of their favorite restaurants has been less than an hour from Gainesville all along.

Together Not Apart For months, Emma’s family searched for answers before learning she had leukemia. THE TASTE OF Key West, AWAY FROM Home Fresh seafood, family traditions, and unforgettable flavors that always bring me back home. ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY BRANDI ROSS: OFFICE MANAGER ACE HANDYMAN SERVICES GAINESVILLE

I grew up in Key West from the time I was six months old until I moved away in 2013. Some of my favorite memories revolve around the water and the meals that came from it. After school or work, it was second nature to grab a fishing pole, check the lobster traps, or pick up a tickle stick and net before heading out on the boat to catch our dinner. There was something deeply rewarding about knowing that the meal on our table came from our own hands. The flavors of Key West are unlike anywhere else. Fresh seafood paired with the rich influence of Cuban spices creates a taste that instantly feels like home. Conch fritters, made with our signature local delicacy, blackened hogfish, tilefish, snowy grouper, lobster bisque, or creamy lobster Alfredo were staples that I still crave. And no visit home is complete without a slice of my Grammy’s homemade Key lime pie. People travel to Key West for the sunsets, the culture, and the lively atmosphere, but they return for the food. I find myself going back every year not only to see my family and lifelong friends, but to reconnect with the flavors that shaped my childhood. Food has a way of preserving memories. Every familiar bite takes me back to evenings on the water, family dinners around the table, and the feeling that no matter how far away I am, home is never out of reach. https://www.acehandymanservices.com/offices/gainesville

The Gracious Kitchen W H E R E T H O U G H T F U L D E S I G N E N R I C H E S E V E R Y G AT H E R I N G , M E A L , A N D S H A R E D M O M E N T ARTICLE BY ASHLEA CRAWFORD: JOHN F CRAWFORD HOMES PHOTOGRAPHY BY BLUEHOUR PHOTOGRAPHY: CLAUDIA LAABS The most memorable kitchens possess a sense of ease. They are beautiful without feeling precious, refined without sacrificing warmth, and beautifully arranged for the rituals that bring people together over food and drink.

Where Gathering Begins: The Kitchen as the Heart of the Home From a builder’s perspective, that ease is created through intentional decisions. The island is scaled for preparing a meal, pouring wine, and lingering in conversation while preserving movement. Cabinetry supports how a family cooks and entertains, while layered lighting brings energy to mornings and a softer glow to dinner. Material selections add character and permanence. Natural stone, crafted woodwork, enduring hardware, and finishes create a kitchen that feels established within the architecture. Each element complements the next, allowing beauty and function to unfold as the gathering itself. The finest kitchens welcome every occasion: coffee at sunrise, children reaching for an afternoon snack, a recipe simmering on the stove, or friends sharing dessert long after dinner has ended. When architecture, craftsmanship, and hospitality are considered as one, the kitchen becomes more than a place to prepare food. It becomes the gracious center of the home, where flavors are shared, traditions are created, and everyday moments become lasting memories.

Ashlea Crawford: J O H N F C R AW F O R D H O M ES

Design your kitchen around the food, drinks, and moments you enjoy most. Consider where morning coffee is prepared, how guests gather while dinner cooks, and where serving pieces, glassware, and small appliances belong. Comfortable walkways, layered lighting, durable surfaces, and tailored storage create a natural sense of ease, allowing the kitchen to welcome everything from quiet breakfasts to elegant, memorable celebrations with family and friends.

Wellness You Can Savor

Discover how functional beverages bring refreshing flavor, effortless convenience, and vibrant wellness alternatives to pills.

44

S ELF CA R E | W EL L NES S

Supplements no longer need to mean swallowing a handful of pill capsules every morning. Lisa Lothian, founder of Natural Body Balance, brings a fresh, bio-available approach to holistic wellness. Having relocated to Tioga from South Florida two years ago, the experienced health coach, Certified Toxicity Specialist, and Detox Practitioner of over 40 years advocates for a delicious, convenient alternative to traditional supplementation: functional beverages. Functional beverages blend nutrients, adaptogens, antioxidants, and botanical extracts directly into liquid form. Liquids are typically easier for the gut to absorb, making daily nutrition both gentle on digestion and far more enjoyable. Instead of viewing optimal wellness as a daily chore, incorporating functional drinks turns systemic support into a comforting ritual. Additionally, many individuals experience difficulty swallowing pills, making liquid alternatives ideal. To introduce the community to these transformative sips, Lisa is hosting an intimate backyard garden party at her serene oasis in Tioga. Attendees will explore an array of wellness-boosting options tailored for every goal:

Functional Coffees: Benefits include sharpening mental focus and memory, weight loss support, hormonal balancing and more. • Detox Tea: Crafted to gently support liver function, assist natural digestion, and clear cellular waste. • Healthy Energy Drinks: Cleanly energize your afternoon using natural herbs and adaptogens rather than synthetic taurine or excess sugar. To mention just a few! Beyond sampling these refreshing blends, guests will learn practical strategies to lower their daily toxic load, improve gut health, and receive customized recommendations from a certified specialist.

EVENT DETAILS:

• When: 2:00 pm, Sunday, October 11th. • Where: Lisa’s Backyard Oasis in Tioga (Exact address provided upon registration) • Cost: $29 (Includes over $50 worth of wellness giveaways and unlimited sampling) Space for this outdoor gathering is limited to ensure a personalized experience for every attendee. TERRI’S TWO CENTS: Kitchen Chaos TOO MANY OPINIONS CAN SPOIL GOOD DECISIONS. TRUST YOUR NUMBERS FIRST, THEN LET EXPERT ADVICE SUPPORT YOUR BUSINESS GROWTH.

You’ve probably heard the saying, “Too many cooks spoil the broth.” The same thing can happen in business. Every day, business owners are surrounded by advice. Your CPA has suggestions. Your banker has recommendations. Friends share what worked for them. Social media is filled with “experts” promising the next big breakthrough. While every perspective has value, too many opinions can make it difficult to know which direction is right for your business. The one voice that should never be ignored is your financial data. Clean books, healthy cash flow, and consistent profitability provide the facts you need to make confident decisions. Your numbers tell the story of what’s really happening, not what someone thinks should happen. As a Profit First Strategist, I help business owners cut through the noise by turning financial information into practical business decisions. When you understand your numbers, you can confidently decide which advice deserves a place at the table. Need help bringing order to the kitchen chaos? Let’s talk. Learn more at AbacusGal.com.

“Terri Bork is a Profit First Strategist who helps business owners increase profitability, improve cash flow, and build stronger businesses through practical financial strategies and accountability.” 46

maple pumpkin parfait

A FALL-INSPIRED MAPLE PUMPKIN GRANOLA WITH PUMPKIN YOGURT ARTICLE BY ALYSSA LAVY, MS, RD, CDN, CPT

4. Line a large baking sheet (9 x 13 inches works well) with parchment paper and spray with nonstick cooking oil spray. Transfer oats to baking sheet and spread in a thin, even layer. 5. Bake in oven for 1 hour, mixing at 30 minutes and 45 minutes. 6. Remove oats from oven briefly. Add pumpkin seeds, chopped walnuts, cinnamon, pumpkin pie spice and remaining ¼ C pure maple syrup. Mix with a spatula and return to oven to bake for another 30 minutes, mixing halfway through. Remove from oven and allow to cool for 5 minutes before using a spatula to transfer to container. Do not wait too long to transfer granola as it can stick to the parchment paper as it cools.

maple pumpkin granola

(Yields approximately 4.5 cups or 18 – ¼ C servings)

ingredients:

• 2 ½ C rolled oats • 1 C pumpkin seeds, hulled • ½ C unsalted walnuts, chopped • 2 Tbsp canned pumpkin puree (Note: the only ingredient should be pumpkin – this is different than pumpkin pie filling) • 1 Tbsp water • 2 Tbsp avocado oil or vegetable oil • ½ C pure maple syrup, divided into 2- ¼ C servings

• • • • •

2 tsp pure vanilla extract 1 tsp ground cinnamon 1 tsp pumpkin pie spice ¼ tsp salt Nonstick cooking oil spray

pumpkin yogurt

(Yields approximately 1 C yogurt)

ingredients:

• ¾ C plain Greek yogurt of choice • ¼ C canned pumpkin puree • ¼ tsp cinnamon • ¼ tsp pure vanilla extract • 1 ½ tsp honey

granola directions:

1. Preheat oven to 250 degrees Fahrenheit. 2. Combine canned pumpkin, water, oil, vanilla extract and ¼ C maple syrup and mix until well combined. 3. Add rolled oats and salt to wet ingredients and mix until oats are evenly coated.

yogurt

directions: 1. Combine all yogurt ingredients in a medium sized bowl. Top with a handful of the maple pumpkin granola, serve immediately and enjoy! Note: This granola can be stored in an airtight container and stored in a cool, dry place for up to 1 week. While this granola is made with gluten free ingredients, I recommend using certified gluten free ingredients if needed . Yogurt can be made with a suitable dairy-free alternative if you need this recipe to be dairy-free and the honey can be swapped for pure maple syrup to make the dairy-free yogurt recipe suitable for a vegan diet. The granola and the yogurt can each be enjoyed on their own, but they complement each other so nicely! This Maple Pumpkin Granola Parfait is a perfect way to celebrate autumn’s most famous flavors in a nutritious way! Pumpkin, maple syrup and warm spices, such as cinnamon and pumpkin pie spice, give cozy vibes that are traditionally found in baked goods this time of year. However, while pumpkin bread, muffins, cookies and other fall flavored baked goods are certainly delicious and should be enjoyed, this Maple Pumpkin Granola Parfait provides the satisfaction of those fall flavors in a lighter way, while providing ample protein and fiber. It is the perfect, slightly sweet and balanced way to start the day – or to enjoy anytime! Website: alyssalavy.com Instagram: @alyssalavyrd

that the program empowers teachers to build student confidence when facing inevitable hardships. Families can also access aligned materials through the Resiliency Florida portal to reinforce positive decision-making and character development at home. For example, one of the resources on the Parent Portal suggests a way to help your young child learn perseverance is to encourage your child to not give up when he or she experiences a challenge. If your child says, “This is too hard. I cannot do it,” encourage your child to instead say, “This is hard, but if I keep trying, I will figure it out.” Help your child understand that it is okay to fail, but not okay to quit. For children a bit older, a suggestion is to encourage your child to learn a new skill, such as playing an instrument, trying on a sport or developing a hobby. These new skills will come with obstacles and require hard work. This a way for your child to learn how to set goals and persevere until their goals are reached.

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRISTINA MILLER OWNER/HEAD OF

There is a trend for today’s children to have less resilience and higher-level learning skills than children have had in the past. This has become very apparent in schools. Not only do children appear more emotionally fragile but problem-solving skills have also declined. It is not completely clear what has shifted in society to cause this decline but it is evident that children would benefit from extra mentoring in the development of resilience and Florida is leading the way. Florida First Lady Casey DeSantis has developed a nation-leading Resiliency Florida initiative that addresses this growing trend. This program prioritizes student mental wellness by focusing on hope, grit, and perseverance. Moreover, this program emphasizes eleven core characteristics, including critical thinking, problem-solving, personal responsibility, gratitude, empathy, and voluntary mentorship. The broader goal is to help teachers seamlessly weave these concepts into everyday classroom instruction. Proponents note
