LMS offers an authentic Montessori program from early childhood through high school, adhering to principles and scientific methods for your child’s development.

The elementary learning environment (grades 1-6) fosters independence and focus through individual or small group work, natural lighting, soft colors, and organized, accessible materials. New students quickly adapt to Montessori’s hands-on, interest-driven teaching. The classroom is a vibrant, happy community where students explore, create, and reflect, with teachers offering support and introducing new material as needed. Clear expectations are balanced with openended opportunities, promoting both comfort and inspiration for learning.

Our Secondary Montessori program serves 7th - 10th grade with expansion of grade levels each year.

We integrate rigorous academics with purposeful work, preparing students to become selfconfident, contributing adults. Our approach addresses adolescents’ physical, emotional, social, and cognitive growth, fostering creativity, critical thinking, and independence. Beyond challenging their intellect, compassion, diplomacy and collaboration are developed through personally experiencing human and nature interdependence. Students also learn business and entrepreneurship skills through hands-on participation in real economic activity provided by Laniakea’s micro-economy program.

We are accepting 3 new students to join our Secondary program. Students must have a strong work ethic with a positive behavior record.

Cheers to the Women in our Lives!

This month, and in this "Women Who Make a Difference" issue, we celebrate all women.  And of course, with Mother’s Day this month, all eyes are on the moms… But it’s not just the biological mothers but the mother figures in our lives who have made an indelible impact on us. It’s also our aunts, our sisters, wives, grandmothers, daughters, granddaughters, teachers, nieces, cousins, mentors, co-workers, our lifelong gal pals, and the women business owners and community leaders who add so much to our lives and to our communities.

As a woman-owned business myself, I love any opportunity to recognize the women in my life who just make life richer and more beautiful. In this issue you will meet "Fearless and Thriving” women, women from many different industries – design, education, healthcare, the floral industry - all of whom have touched the lives of so many people around them.  They are movers and shakers, creators, healers and makers. They are both seen and unseen. Their silent service blesses those who are under their care. Their attention to detail shows us something about beauty that can’t be seen or understood in any other way.

Thank you to all the women in our community who work so hard and serve so many.  And thank you to all the women in my life – I wouldn’t be here without you!

Happy Mother’s Day!  And see you around town!

Don't Skipthe Sunscreen!

With over 5 million cases diagnosed in the United States each year, skin cancer is America's most common cancer. Fortunately, skin cancer is also one of the most preventable forms of cancer. About 90 percent of nonmelanoma skin cancers and 85 percent of melanoma cases are associated with exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun.

Gainesville Dermatology experts recommend the daily use of a broadspectrum sunscreen, as this protects the skin against harmful UVA and UVB rays. With an SPF minimum rating of 35, you can protect against sunburn which reduces the risk of skin cancer, helps prevent photodamage and photoaging, or premature skin aging.

COMMUNITY & BUSINESS Experience

Dr. Laura W. McChesney, Chiropractic

Physician/Owner Momentum Rehab and Chiropractic

ARTICLE BY DR. LAURA W. MCCHESNEY, CHIROPRACTIC PHYSICIAN/OWNER MOMENTUM REHAB AND CHIROPRACTIC

HOW HAS THE GAINESVILLE COMMUNITY SUPPORTED YOUR BUSINESS JOURNEY?

One of my favorite things about Gainesville is its love of health and wellness. This “small town” has a wealth of natural and alternative health options and that only continues to grow. The people truly embrace living an active, healthy life as long as possible and as a chiropractor, that is exciting to be around.

The Gainesville Chamber has been a wonderful resource for us from getting started to our rebranding and beyond. Also, as a business owner, and one whose focus is in the injury rehab space, it is refreshing to have so many others in the same space willing to work together for the good of the patient.

WHAT MAKES GAINESVILLE A UNIQUE PLACE TO BE A SMALL BUSINESS OWNER?

Though it is a college town, Gainesville’s core is filled with many diverse small businesses and amazing locals who love to support them. Our practice is a community within a community and they are wonderful about sharing their experiences and helping you grow. Resources like the Chamber of Commerce and Gainesville Area Women’s Network provide opportunities to learn more about running a business.

HOW DO YOU GIVE BACK TO THE LOCAL COMMUNITY THROUGH YOUR BUSINESS?

Giving back is a core part of our office values. We are happy to donate time, services or finances whenever possible to help those in need. In the past we have run food and clothing drives for local non-profits, donated to charities and hurricane relief for our neighboring communities, and support community sports teams, such as Gatorball. When a patient has a cause for their church or loved one, we are happy to participate however we can.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE LOCAL EVENT OR TRADITION IN GAINESVILLE?

Just one? Impossible! As a devout sports lover, football season in  Gainesville is a whole other vibe and I love it. The camaraderie, even when things are down, Gators really do stick together.

And it’s not just football. The community is so supportive of women’s sports as well. Getting into gymnastics or softball can be just as much a challenge. The love of sports trickles all the way down to the youth leagues which is fantastic to see.

Then there are the festivals…I do enjoy hitting as many as possible each year but the Micanopy Fall Festival is a must every year to truly ring in the change of seasons. Micanopy is a beautiful town and they do fall right.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE LOOKING TO START A BUSINESS IN GAINESVILLE?

Get out and meet people within the group you want to serve. There are so many opportunities with clubs, events and organizations to network within and around the surrounding communities. Remember that Gainesville is the hub but the people to be served are wide reaching into the rural areas that commute here for work, healthcare and recreation, so broaden your circle.

Montessori Education: Leadership, Learning, and Success

A SCIENCE-BACKED APPROACH TO LIFELONG LEARNING, CONFIDENCE, AND SUCCESS

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START THIS PRIVATE SCHOOL?

Educational leadership is key to improving education and fostering student success. As a Montessori educator, I focus on child and adolescent development, the science of learning, and best practices for growth. Founding a Montessori school has been a privilege, allowing me to work with a dedicated community of teachers and assistants committed to serving students.

HOW DOES MONTESSORI SUPPORT STUDENT SUCCESS?

Montessori is scientifically proven, over 100 years strong, and rooted in neuroscience. Certified Montessori teachers are trained in executive function, emotional intelligence, and child development. Research shows Montessori students develop higher confidence, social skills, critical thinking, and academic achievement. Students with unique abilities often see remarkable growth in self-regulation, literacy, math, and problem-solving. Montessori surpasses traditional education in every way.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR PARENTS?

Start Montessori early—it’s the best gift for your child! If starting later, trust the process, support their teacher, and choose a school that stays true to Montessori principles. Ensure teachers are Montessori-trained. Be cautious of schools that neglect reading and math in early education.

WHAT’S ONE THING MORE PEOPLE SHOULD KNOW?

Executive function training is essential! Montessori preserves a child’s love of learning, guiding them to discover their true calling.

Melanie is pursuing a D.Ed. in Montessori education at the University of Wisconsin and holds a Leadership in Education certificate from Cornell. She shares her Montessori parenting journey with her husband, Josh, and their four children.

TRANSFORM your health WITH PURPOSE

WHAT IS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND ABSOLUTE WELLNESS AND WEIGHTLOSS?

While in medical school, I lost my father when he was 49 yrs old. His early death strengthened my belief in the importance of preventative medicine. While raising my two boys, I wanted to set a positive example and instill healthy behaviors. Through this, my passion for wellness and helping others achieve their goals grew.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF HELPING CLIENTS ON THEIR JOURNEY?

I love all of the non-scale victories – the successes that go beyond the scale. Seeing not only the physical, but mental transformations, warms my heart! Empowering my clients through education, support and accountability to make lasting lifestyle changes is very rewarding.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO THOSE LOOKING TO IMPROVE THEIR HEALTH?

They need to dig deep to find their “why” and understand that they did not get to where they are overnight and it will take time and consistency to see change. Working together, we implement a plan focusing on nutrition, mindset and movement.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE MOTTO OR PHILOSOPHY THAT GUIDES YOUR WORK?

It’s not about the weight you lose, but the health you gain.

Create Heaven on Earth!

EMPOWERING WOMEN THROUGH self-care practices

Self-care is an essential practice for both men and women. It should not be seen as “pampering” or an indulgence, but rather a strategic mental health approach. Setting time aside to focus on your mental and physical health should be integrated into your daily routine to help reduce stress, improve mood and foster a sense of balance.

There are a few methods you can incorporate, including regular physical activity, mindfulness and good sleeping habits. Healthy eating and staying hydrated also play a significant role. It’s equally important to set boundaries and prioritize activities that bring you joy. This is especially crucial for women with the societal demands of balancing a family and a career. Setting unrealistic goals can cause unnecessary stress and negatively impact one’s mental health.

Listen to your body and take proactive measures before a crisis arises and burnout sets in. After all, nurturing your mental health and prioritizing self-care is a vital part of living a fulfilling and balanced life. Visit EliteDNAGainesville.com or call 352-623-6470.

“Many think of self-care as a luxury practiced in down time, but it’s really a necessity for women to foster resilience in our fast-paced society.”

Earthwise Pet Jonesville

My Passion Has 4 Legs!!

Saving Pets Through Nutrition and Training: A Life Changing Mission

Sharon’s passion for animals has led her down a fulfilling path of helping both pets and their owners. From her early days caring for hamsters, turtles, cats, and dogs, she always felt a strong connection to animals and a desire to ensure their safety. Her volunteering experience with the Paws on Parole Program allowed her to develop this passion further. Yet, it was an unfortunate experience involving poor advice about feeding their diabetic dog that inspired her to pursue a career in animal care and led her to open Earthwise Pet Jonesville .  Sharon finds immense satisfaction in helping cats and dogs with nutritional needs and witnessing the positive changes she brings into their lives. She dedicates time to the Cuff and Collars Program, a prison-based initiative where dogs are trained by inmates at the Lancaster Correctional Institution before being made available for adoption. Sharon volunteers weekly at the prison, assisting the inmates with dog training. She believes the program benefits not only the dogs but also the inmates, providing them with valuable skills and a sense of purpose. Sharon’s story is a testament to her unwavering commitment to animals and the positive impact she continues to make in their lives.

Pelvic Floor Therapy helps!

PELVIC HEALTH FOR WOMEN

May, a month honoring mothers, is an ideal time to highlight pelvic health therapy. At least 25% of U.S. women face a pelvic health disorder in their lifetime. Because it is so common for women to have pelvic health dysfunction, the assumption is that it is normal. It is not normal and there is help available through pelvic health therapy! Many know pelvic health therapy addresses bladder, bowel, and pelvic pain as well as pregnancy and postpartum issues. Yet, pelvic health therapists are also able to uniquely discern musculoskeletal issues—like sacroiliac dysfunction, low back, or hip pain— from pelvic and abdominal viscera dysfunction and pelvic floor muscle issues. They also tackle pelvic pain, fascial issues, stability concerns like prolapse, and core weakness. Purely Pelvic LLC offers holistic pelvic health therapy, respecting each patient’s individual journey. Begin healing today by booking with Evette D’Avy Reed, PT, at www.purelypelvic.com.

PROPER fit matters

The secret to comfort, confidence, and lasting support? A properly fitted bra— because self-care starts with the right fit.

For many women, bra shopping is a dreaded experience—a frustrating cycle of discomfort, endless trial and error, and settling for something that’s ‘good enough.’ But what if finding the perfect bra wasn’t just possible but truly transformative?

That’s the philosophy behind Lion’s Lair Boutique , where owner Kimberly Berger has spent decades empowering women through expert bra fittings and quality lingerie.

Wearing the wrong bra size isn’t just inconvenient— it can be as painful as wearing the wrong size shoes. Poor fit can lead to back pain, poor posture, low self-esteem, and long-term discomfort. More than 85% of women are wearing the wrong bra size, often without realizing the impact a better fit could have.

Finding the right bra is about more than size—it’s also about shape and brand. Much like jeans, a perfect fit in one brand may feel completely different

in another. Expert guidance makes all the difference. The team at Lion’s Lair Boutique in High Springs helps women navigate these differences to find a fit that truly works.

When asked about the most common bra fit mistake, Kimberly explained, “Women are usually wearing too small of a cup on too large of a band. The shoulder straps are overtightened, trying to get some lift and support, which throws off the entire fit. This makes the bra feel tight and very uncomfortable. Most stores only carry a limited range of sizes, leaving many women without proper options. At Lion’s Lair Boutique, we offer the full range of sizes: 28 to 56 bands and A cup to T cup, ensuring everyone can find their perfect fit.”

Annual bra fittings are an essential part of selfcare. If you haven’t had one recently, now is the time. Your body—and confidence—will thank you.

Kimberly Berger, owner of Lion’s Lair Boutique, has dedicated her life to helping women find their perfect fit. Her boutique stocks over 200 sizes, in both lingerie and swimwear ensuring a comfortable and supportive fit for every body type. Visit www.LLSwim.com to schedule an appointment.

My Gainesville journey began at Shands Hospital, after a life-changing bike accident at the Santos Vortex trail in Ocala. I sustained a spinal cord injury, paralyzed from the waist down. My back was broken; my life forever changed. I was willing to trade my recent world record for the simple task of walking again. Four teams of surgeons, headed by Dr. Richard Fessler, eleven hours of surgery, the grace of God and a summer in a hospital bed gave me the use of my legs again. Truly miraculous. Helping others to overcome health obstacles and remain functional became my passion.

My racing days may be over, but my gratitude to this community has not wavered. I was excited to be able to open our practice in Millhopper and bring you my medical training, which includes a focus on endocrinology and functional medicine. This approach, which I’ve coined at AZENA as “functional primary care,” is a patient-centered model that aims to address the root causes of disease and promote overall wellness.

Our clinical philosophy is more Eastern rooted: keeping you healthy creates mutual success. This approach, which takes

a holistic view of health and focuses on the root causes of disease, serves as the core of our practice. We work as hard as you to get you to your best health, wellness, and functionality. I treat each one of my patients as my former Shands’ team treated me: with respect, dignity, and as your greatest fan. You are unique, and we treat you accordingly.

My motto is “Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a harder battle” -Plato. This saying, rooted in my medical background, has shaped my practice philosophy. I’ve learned that excellent outcomes happen when you treat people with kindness and listen with intent and dignity. To everyone in this community, I give thanks. Because without you, I would not be here today.

SONGBIRD OF MANY TRADES MOTORCYCLE MAMASITA

How many times can someone be told, “You should have your own reality show”? If you ask Bijan, she’d say her life is ordinary—but it’s anything but!

This vibrant Tica (Costa Rican) speaks English, Spanish, and French. Born in South Florida, she studied fashion design before earning a marketing degree at UF. An entrepreneur at heart, she launched two Gainesville boutiques and is now planning a third venture at 52.

Age is just a number for this motorcycle mama. She met her dream man at 40, married at 41, had a baby at 42, trained for a marathon at 46, and now rides a Softail Deluxe—just like Elvis!

Beyond business, Bijan is an HOA president, Sira Gainesville volunteer, and women’s group leader. A sought-after speaker, she inspires women to live with purpose, faith, and joy. When not giving back, she’s off-roading with her child, riding around town with her husband, or celebrating life with her girlfriends.

Criss was born in South Korea and immigrated at the age of 4. Growing up as an Army brat, she eventually claimed Arizona as home. She moved to Gainesville in October 2014 by way of Augusta, GA.

At 48, she is a proud mother of an 8-year-old daughter. She is dedicated to her career as a Pathologist’s Assistant, finding passion and purpose in her work. Beyond her professional life, Criss is deeply involved in the arts and actively serves the community. She sings with 1000 Voices of Florida choir, performs in musical theater at Star Center Theatre, recently appearing in GCP’s In The Heights, and participates in church at Creekside Community. She will also appear in season 2 of a TV show streaming on a major platform. Additionally, she enjoys amateur event planning for close friends and family.

Through her professional skills, musical passion, and talent, she has built lifelong friendships and thrives in many different communities.

The Gifts a Mother Brings

Mother’s Day is upon us, and it’s time to recognize the roles a mother plays in the development and early learning of her children.

Mothers are their children’s first teachers. They teach their children to talk and walk and all the important skills that give them independence. Language acquisition begins with the hearing and imitating of sounds a child hears predominantly from his or her mother.

The example set regarding manners, patience, and all the virtues is imparted naturally from a mother to her children. These first impressions from birth to three are the most formative.

Foremost, a child learns love from the loving energy exchange that occurs with his or her mother. As we grow up, we learn that there is no one in this world who loves us more than our mother. The mother also learns about love when she gives birth to her child and raises them. Rajneesh is quoted as saying, “The moment a child is born, the mother is

also born. She never existed before. The woman existed, but the mother never. A mother is something absolutely new.”   (Since this is a quote, I made no changes. a comma after mother, never, does show up on the grammar check.)

Every day, I am fortunate to witness children interacting with their mothers at my school. Often, I have observed a child falling, picking himself up, and continuing a game, only later to watch him dissolve into tears when his mother arrives, having conserved every tear just for her.

Everyone on this earth came to be by way of a mother. I speak firsthand when I say my mother was my best friend. She taught me courage by being courageous and made my heart light with her laughter. From my mother, my first and most significant teacher, I was given my life and learned unconditional love.

Enjoy your children and enjoy your mother.

Happy Mother’s Day!   https://www.millhopper.com/
