Beyond challenging their intellect, compassion, diplomacy and collaboration are developed through personally experiencing human and nature interdependence. Students also learn business and entrepreneurship skills through hands-on participation in real economic activity provided by Laniakea’s micro-economy program.

The Men’s Issue –Celebrating the Men Who Shape Us
As the vibrant colors of June settle over our community, our thoughts naturally turn toward the official beginning of summer as well as to Father’s Day, and to the men who provide the steady foundations of our lives. Last month we celebrated the women, and this month we’re incredibly proud to present our annual “Men’s Issue”, a dedicated space where we honor fathers, mentors, entrepreneurs and local business profes sionals who lead by example and dedicate their time to local progress, home improvement, good health and self-care. This month we’ve had the privilege of talking to several of these trailblazers, and their commitment is truly inspiring.
An inspirational man has the incredible privilege of shaping and mentoring the young people in their lives to grow and mature in a multitude of ways. Whether they are a father, stepfather, grandfather, brother, cousin, a coach, an uncle or a boss, being a role model and leading by example can make a lasting impact on those watching. We can all probably think of a man in our life that has had a big impact on us at one time or another. Whether it was someone pushing us to be a better version of ourselves, or someone who sees the best in us, or someone we look up to for guidance, or perhaps someone we don’t personally know but who inspires us by their greatness, we recognize the impact these role models can make on our lives.
I hope you find a moment to thank, enjoy and celebrate the men in your lives who have made a difference. Let your father or a father figure in your life know how much he matters to you. And if you are a dad, let us be the first to say - thank you. You are invaluable to the people who know and need you as well as to the community around you.

Stephen G. Mercadante was born in Mt. Vernon, New York, where he spent his early years before relocating to Gainesville, Florida during his high-school education. After completing high school in Gainesville, he continued his academic path at the University of Florida, where he played baseball for the Gators. While at the University of Florida, he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in 1977, laying the foundation for what would become a long and distinguished legal career.
With a strong interest in the law and a desire to advocate for others, Steve went on to attend Stetson College of Law. He earned his Juris Doctorate in 1980, graduating from one of Florida’s strongest programs for trial advocacy. Shortly after completing his legal studies, Steve returned to Gainesville—a community he had grown to call home—and joined the law firm that would ultimately carry his name.
For 46 years, Steve has dedicated his practice to represent individuals who were injured through no fault of their own. Over those decades, he has provided counsel and advocacy to thousands of personal injury victims, helping clients navigate some of the most challenging moments of their lives. His commitment to justice, compassion for those he served, and steady professionalism earned him a strong reputation within both the legal community and the broader Gainesville area.
Steve was admitted to the Florida Bar in 1980. Throughout his career, he has remained actively engaged in professional organizations that promote legal excellence and ethical practice. He has been a member of the James C. Adkins American Inns of Court as well as the Eighth Judicial Bar Association, participating in programs and activities aimed at supporting mentorship, professionalism, and continuing legal education.
Beyond his legal work, Steve has always demonstrated a deep commitment to community service. Over the years, he volunteered through the Gainesville Recreation Department, the Boys and Girls Club of Alachua County, American Legion Post 16, and PK Yonge High School. His service also extended into faith-based and family-oriented programs, where he mentored youth and married couples through his church and other local organizations.
For more than 20 years, Steve also contributed to the next generation of legal professionals as an adjunct professor at Santa Fe College. He taught courses in Personal Injury and Litigation, sharing his extensive knowledge and practical experience with students preparing to enter the legal field. His work as an educator further reflects his long-standing dedication to service, learning, and the advancement of the profession.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO INSURANCE?
My father. If not for him, I would have thought insurance was just another bill. He became an insurance agent nearly 30 years ago, working under GreatFlorida Insurance founder Ike. With Ike’s blessing and encouragement, my father eventually opened his own GreatFlorida office. Insurance was always part of the conversation at family dinner.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO OPEN YOUR OWN INSURANCE OFFICE IN GAINESVILLE?
My wife and I bought a home in High Springs and realized there were no GreatFlorida offices in this area. I already had the licensing, knowledge, and experience, so I brought the idea to my father and my wife. In many ways, it mirrored my father’s own story years earlier. With his guidance, and with the support of my family and friends, we officially opened our office in August 2025.
WHAT IS ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’D GIVE TO ANYONE THINKING OF STARTING THEIR OWN BUSINESS?
Do it. You’ll learn more about yourself than you expect, and meet a lot of amazing people along the way. It is challenging, but
it is also incredibly rewarding, and you’ll make great memories in the process.
WHAT IS ONE THING YOU WISH EVERYONE UNDERSTOOD ABOUT INSURANCE?
Insurance is something that will be part of your life forever, so it’s worth understanding. Too often, people do not realize what their policy includes until they actually need it. I have had people call me surprised to learn they did not have roadside assistance or rental car coverage. I wish more people felt confident in what their policy covers.
WHAT IS A COMMON MISCONCEPTION ABOUT INSURANCE?
That it is all basically the same. Insurance is a marketplace, and there are a lot of options out there. Many people stay with the same carrier for years without realizing they may have better pricing elsewhere. I always tell people to shop around regularly and make sure they understand what they are paying for.

One of the most common requests is for durable structural and exterior materials. Many clients opt for CMU block or 2x6 exterior wall construction for added strength and insulation. A: “If you’re a good person going in, that shows. If you’re not, that shows too. I also learned that people form this parasocial relationship with you — they assume things about you. When in all actuality, different circumstances bring out different parts of who you are. I was on TV trying to find love. The kindness people were showing after felt a bit fake, because they wanted to be a part of something that isn’t who I am individually, but a part of what they saw on TV. And so I had to get away from everybody and everything and the noise.”

Q: YOU JOINED THE AIR FORCE RIGHT OUT OF COMMUNITY COLLEGE. WHAT WERE YOU ACTUALLY RUNNING TOWARD?
A: “There was something in me that was saying: I’m not living up to my full potential. I was being a follower. My uncle said, ‘What’s going to make you become an adult the fastest?’ I said, obviously, the military. The Air Force broadened my thought process more than anything. We’re so caught up in our own perception — when you learn to understand different people’s perspectives, it adds to you in so many ways.”
Q: WITH OSHUN, YOU OWN YOUR MANUFACTURING, YOU EMPLOY A CHEMIST, EVERY PRODUCT HAS A BATCH NUMBER TRACEABLE TO ITS ORIGIN DATE. WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO GO THAT DEEP WITH THE BRAND?
A: “The EU bans 1,100 ingredients in personal care products. The U.S. bans nine. That’s my starting point. Oftentimes, it might be the same ingredient, but it comes from a place where it doesn’t have the highest purity. And 60% of what we put on our skin is absorbed. Every product Oshun makes carries a batch number that goes back to the exact day it was created — I can show you every single supplier, the date, the origin. I own more than one part of the supply chain because that’s the only way I can stand behind what’s in the bottle.”

Stay-At-Home Dads
If a dad is the primary care giver for his children, then he is a stay-at-home dad. There are about 2 million stay-at-home dads in the US alone. There are still stereotypes and issues of occasional feelings of isolation, but it is becoming more and more socially acceptable as women are climbing the corporate ladder. Finding a community of other fathers is more difficult than communities for mothers which abound.
Supporting their partner’s career and being more daily connected with their children offset any of the aforementioned challenges for stay-at-home dads. It is also important to establish a routine and spreading out chores into specific days or times, such as laundry day, for example.
There are many things to do in the community to lessen any feelings of isolation and, aside from taking children to and from school and after school activities, a lot of quality time can occur on days that are open in the afternoons to go to museums, nature walks, and fishing, to name a few.
Stay-at-home- dads can also become more involved with their children’s school lives. Volunteering at your child’s school or even

homeschooling can place you in an enviable position in your child’s eyes. Dads make great volunteers when you need a class garden tilled or helping the school plan a field day or even becoming the president of the PTA!

Finally, embrace your role and experience first hand how your child grows from day to day. The days and years go by fast and you can never get them back. It is a gift to be there for the ride.
