With over 5 million cases diagnosed in the United States each year, skin cancer is America's most common cancer. Fortunately, skin cancer is also one of the most preventable forms of cancer. About 90 percent of nonmelanoma skin cancers and 85 percent of melanoma cases are associated with exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun.
Gainesville Dermatology experts recommend the daily use of a broadspectrum sunscreen, as this protects the skin against harmful UVA and UVB rays. With an SPF minimum rating of 35, you can protect against sunburn which reduces the risk of skin cancer, helps prevent photodamage and photoaging, or premature skin aging.

“But, above all it is the education of adolescents that is important, because adolescence is the time when the child enters the state of adulthood and becomes a member of society.” - Dr. Maria Montessori
Located in the former Santa Fe College Spring Arts building, Laniakea Montessori School now offers an authentic Montessori Secondary program that consists of experiences both in the classroom and outside that support students in developing greater self-awareness and engagement with a complex world. The program also provides a wide range of experiential learning opportunities interwoven throughout the curriculum to respond to the developmental needs of adolescents, including orientation trips, internships, academic immersion, service work & volunteer hours, and local, national, and international research trips. Classes are IB format! We offer mentoring for craftsman & trades.
The month of June is many things – the official beginning of summer, school closures, family vacations and getaways for some of us, and of course, Father’s Day.
Last month we celebrated Women of Influence and this month we salute the men – the leaders, the role models, and of course the fathers and father figures. We are excited to spotlight these men and their contributions to the betterment of our community. We’re highlighting men who put themselves second, work hard, and inspire others to do the same. To all of the men out there who are making a difference in someone’s life, big or small, we appreciate you all so much and applaud you! The lasting impact that you’re making and the ripple effect that often ensues is worth it.
An inspirational man has the incredible power and privilege of shaping and mentoring the young people in their lives to grow and mature in a multitude of ways. Whether they are a father, grandfather, brother, a coach, an uncle or a boss, being a role model and leading by example can make a lasting impact on those watching. We can all probably think of a man in our life that has had a big impact on us at one time or another. Whether it was someone pushing us to be a better version of ourselves, or someone who sees the best in us, or someone we look up to for guidance, or perhaps someone we don’t personally know but who inspires us by their greatness, we can recognize the impact these role models can make on our lives.
Let your father or a father figure in your life know how much he matters to you. And if you are a dad, let us be the first to say - thank you. You are invaluable to the people who know and need you as well as the community around you. Thank you to all the men who do so much for us personally and for this community. Enjoy and celebrate the men in your lives.
Happy Father’s Day! And see you around town!

WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO GAINESVILLE TO START SCUOLA PIZZA?
I was living in Gulf Shores, Alabama in 2020 when the Covid restrictions started taking place nationwide. I was originally supposed to open Scuola Pizza there but it seemed no deal could get done regardless of my efforts. I took a trip to Williston, FL to visit the Greek Orthodox Monastery and on my way back stopped by Gainesville. I loved the area and the deal that couldn’t get done in 6 months in Alabama got done in literally one day in Gainesville!
WHEN DID YOU KNOW SCUOLA PIZZA WAS GOING TO BE A SUCCESS?
Honestly, for the first 18 months, I thought the restaurant wasn’t going to make it. We were struggling in the worst of ways. Deep down however I felt God had brought me to Gainesville for a greater purpose than to just open and close a restaurant. Twice, I was ready to call a meeting to inform the staff that we were going to close but both times in the same week we received a check from the government that kept the restaurant open. After this, I knew it was God’s will that we stay open and that brighter days were ahead for Scuola Pizza. That’s exactly what’s happened.
WHAT PERSONALITY TRAITS DO YOU THINK EVERY LEADER SHOULD HAVE?
A leader is one that can successfully help a group of people achieve an aimed goal. No easy task. Outside of being an example for their honesty, hard work, punctuality and much more, the most important trait a leader must have is discernment. This is invaluable when coordinating multiple personalities and individuals with diverse backgrounds. Discernment is no small virtue to have however, and it’s only earned through the grind of many years of service in the given field.
WHAT WOULD YOU TELL YOUR 24-YEAR-OLD SELF TODAY?
Talk less, listen more and don’t waste so much time. Time is much more precious than I realized at 24!
DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE DISH?
Absolutely, Gyro Pita Wrap with Fries will always be my favorite dish and I’d choose it over the most exquisite of 5-star entrees.
FAVORITE QUOTE?

Self-care is genderneutral, and everyone should feel valued and cared for.
The importance of self-care is the fundamental reason why Nirvana Day Spa was created. Self-care encompasses one’s mental, emotional and physical well-being, and it helps a person feel more balanced, confident, and content with themselves and their life. Men are now becoming more receptive to the idea that getting a deep tissue massage, going to therapy, meditating, sitting in a far infrared sauna or receiving an exfoliating facial is just as important as going to the gym. Day spas are no longer viewed as pampering for women on the weekend, and both men and the spa industry are realizing this.
Regardless of who you are, we recommend finding a space that relieves pain, and enhances your senses, inner serenity and your overall transformation.
You have one body! Take care of it and focus your energy on the things that bring you joy and good health!

FROM 1000'S AD TO TODAY, WHISKEY CONTINUES TO BE A POPULAR AND NOW PREMIUM SPIRIT.
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY LEZA
MUELLERThe first distillation of whiskey took place in Scotland or Ireland in the early 1000s AD. The term ‘whisky’ is originally from the Gaelic ‘uisge beatha’ or ‘usquebaugh’ meaning ‘water of life’. Then in the 1600s, the Irish and Scots brought their knowledge to the New World.
No matter when it started, or who brought it to the Americas, whiskey has become a popular and premium spirit. So, Enjoy!
