The Season of Giving

The holidays are here and as the spirit of the season is upon us, it’s truly the time of year to enjoy the real spirit of the holidays – being with loved ones, reaching out to long lost friends and family, and especially helping those in need.

In this issue and in the true spirit of the season, we shine a light on our people and businesses that need a little extra.  Our area’s “Hurricane Teams” of Hometown Heroes jumped right in to help our community and our neighboring areas to rebuild from the double whammy of two back-to-back hurricanes!  Also, our City Lifestyle National Giving Campaign is once again “Making Spirits Bright” and is in full swing calling for nominations for those in our communities who can use that extra help as well.  Please take a minute to check this out and see how you can nominate any person or family in need.

This month we also highlight all the many events and activities our area has to offer that helps spread holiday cheer, including our Shop Local/Local Favorites pages which showcase local businesses and their products, selections, and services.

My hope for us all this season is to feel joy, kindness, love and peace.  Let’s come together and help out and give back where we can, and enjoy this magical time.

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and see you around town!

Creating Your Tree, Your Style

Personalize Your Christmas Tree with Unique Themes and Creative Touches

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY

Decorating a Christmas tree is a chance to showcase your personal style and creativity. Start with a high-quality pre-lit tree, which saves time and ensures a brilliant, even glow throughout the tree. Once it’s set up, choose a theme that reflects your taste, whether it’s traditional red and green or something whimsical and modern. The theme will help guide your decor choices. Next, add layers of texture and dimension with ribbons, bows, and garland. Drape them throughout the tree, weaving them in and out to create visual depth. Use bows strategically to add extra flair and cohesion. Fill in themed and sentimental ornaments. Select a topper that complements your theme—whether it’s a classic star, an angel, or something more unique to your style.

For added height and grandeur, place your tree on a sturdy table or blocks. This also makes room for more gifts. Complete the look with a tree skirt to hide the base and pull everything together.

If the decorating process feels overwhelming or you’re pressed for time, consider calling The Home Place. They have Holiday design services and can handle the decorating for you, ensuring your tree is as stunning and festive as you envision.

https://thehomeplacefl.com/

Thornebrook will be decorated in winter wonderland attire as we herald the holiday season. Celebrate with local shops and vendors, food trucks, and our annual tree lighting. At 6pm, the tree will be lit alongside a carol sing-a-long and Santa will arrive!

JOIN OUR MISSION TO SPREAD WARMTH AND COMPASSION BY NOMINATING SOMEONE WHO DESERVES A CHRISTMAS BLESSING

“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way.”

As the Christmas season approaches, we’re reminded of the power of community and kindness. This year, through City Lifestyle’s nonprofit, The Kingdom Building Foundation, we will help people who may be struggling quietly without the support they need. But we need your help to find them.

Over the past three years, this campaign has grown into something truly beautiful, touching the lives of more than 150 families nationwide last year alone. Each year, we’ve seen firsthand how generosity can bring relief, hope, and a renewed sense of faith in others.

One person we had the opportunity to help was an 11-year-old boy diagnosed with a rare eye cancer. After he had to undergo chemotherapy and surgery to remove his eye, his doctors recommended a prosthetic one, but insurance wouldn’t cover the cost, calling it “cosmetic.” When we heard his story, we knew we had to help. Because of this campaign, he got his prosthetic eye and a piece of his childhood back with it.

Another was a wife and mother of two who fought a yearlong health battle and was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Just days before Christmas, she underwent surgery but passed away due to complications. Before her surgery, she received one of our cards and, in tears, told us this gift gave her some peace, knowing her family would have help in the difficult times ahead. It wasn’t just about the financial support but knowing that someone cared.

These stories remind us why this campaign is so meaningful. It’s not just

about writing checks; it’s about telling people they aren’t forgotten and that someone is there to lend a hand. It’s about giving families a moment of relief when the world feels unbearable.

“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”

Together with Matthew Perry, President, Steven adds that the gratitude from recipients was overwhelming, affirming this tradition’s importance. “We believe God has blessed our company with success,” Matthew adds, “so we want to be a blessing to others.”

We know many more people could use a little help this Christmas, and that’s where you come in. Do you know someone who could use a blessing? We want to hear about them.

To nominate someone, scan the QR code or follow @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the form in our bio. Nominations are open from November 27 to December 10, 2024. Let’s bring hope to those who need it most.

The City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized. All entries will be read, and selections and the amount given to each recipient will be based on the severity of the need. For more information, visit KingdomBuildingFoundation.org

In the aftermath of a devastating storm, a community was blessed. The outpouring of donations and helping hands were more than we had hoped. The hardship that so many have faced was made easier by the help of the multitude of people that love this little town that we call home. As a resident of Steinhatchee, this is a big thank you to all who contributed and supported us and have continued to do so. We are building back and looking forward to more beautiful sunsets.

TEACHING your Children to be Generous

Generosity and sharing are not always easy for young children to understand and they do not come easily due to the developmental stage of poor impulse control. However, they both can be learned.

Children need to understand the needs and feelings of others which helps them build positive relationships, therefore, generosity is an important social skill and there are ways to help children understand the positive effects of being generous.

The holiday season is a perfect time to show children how good it feels to give to others. There are books that underscore the joy of giving and sharing; Little Robin’s Christmas, by Jan Fearnley, and Pass it On, by Sophy Henn, are two books I would recommend.

Sharing is also difficult for young children and can be learned by example. Some of the things that parents

can model for their children may be sharing a talent you have with your child’s class at school or baking cookies together as holiday gifts. Sharing non-material things, such as feelings, while taking turns telling each other what you are thankful for at the dinner table sets an example too. You may want to help your child make a care package for a sick friend. Of course, having your child see you model your participation in charitable events will also send a strong message.

Finally, explaining to your child that they may not always get thanked for their sharing, giving help, or their generosity is vital. It should not discourage them or negate their gift, because giving something without thought of return is true generosity.
