LMS offers an authentic Montessori program from early childhood through high school, adhering to principles and scientific methods for your child’s development. The elementary learning environment (grades 1-6) fosters independence and focus through individual or small group work, natural lighting, soft colors, and organized, accessible materials. New students quickly adapt to Montessori’s hands-on, interest-driven teaching. The classroom is a vibrant, happy community where students explore, create, and reflect, with teachers offering support and introducing new material as needed. Clear expectations are balanced with openended opportunities, promoting both comfort and inspiration for learning. Our Secondary Montessori program serves 7th - 10th grade with expansion of grade levels each year. We integrate rigorous academics with purposeful work, preparing students to become selfconfident, contributing adults. Our approach addresses adolescents’ physical, emotional, social, and cognitive growth, fostering creativity, critical thinking, and independence. Beyond challenging their intellect, compassion, diplomacy and collaboration are developed through personally experiencing human and nature interdependence. Students also learn business and entrepreneurship skills through hands-on participation in real economic activity provided by Laniakea’s micro-economy program. We are accepting 3 new students to join our Secondary program. Students must have a strong work ethic with a positive behavior record.

Here’s to the Kids and Pets in our Lives!

Summer is winding down, kids are getting back to school, and soon fall will be here. Our carefree days of slower morning routines and spending time on the water and at the beach, are exchanged for soon-to-be busy school and sports routines and schedules. The summers tend to progressively feel like they fly by the older we get, as do the years, but the simple pleasures of summer never get old. And here in Gainesville, even though summer’s coming to an end, we still have some hot days in store for us, but we know we have a great fall ahead to look forward to as well! Since we associate the “back to school” season with kids, our August issue is dedicated to these cutest members of our community— our kids – but also to our pets. This issue is definitely one of my favorites. Having always had a home full of boisterous pets (currently Springer Spaniels, a cat and some chickens), I continue to be fascinated by the special bond between our kids and our pets, and the love and joy they bring to each other, and to our world. And let’s also not overlook the powerful role pets play in our families. They offer unconditional love and teach us valuable lessons in empathy, responsibility, and companionship. The bond between kids and their pets can be transformative, fostering deep emotional connections that last a lifetime. They both have a way of making us feel special, and their loyalty and sense of wonder is refreshing. In this issue, we take you into the lives of some of our local business owners and the children and pets they cherish. You’ll hear from pet care and healthcare experts, and take a peek into the world of Irish Dancing for the kids and students at Gainesville Dance Academy. As always, don’t forget to check out our Local Favorite Picks, and all the fun and worthwhile activities going on around town in our City Scene pages. We hope this issue inspires you to pour a little extra into the kids and “pet kids” in your life this month. So here’s to our little ones and the pets who make everything better!

Painting with a Pit Supports Local Rescues Through Creative Fundraisers EarthWise Pet Jonesville and artist Samm Wehman recently teamed up for multiple Painting with a Pit fundraisers benefiting local animal service organizations and rescues, including Gainesville Rabbit Rescue, Fix Them All, and the Shakespeare Animal Fund. Before each event, Samm sketches every pet portrait on canvas and then guides participants through the painting process. A Gentle Comfort to Grieving Families
KOTA
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY KATHLEEN LARSEN For more than a year, families served by Forest Meadows Funeral Home, Crematory & Cemeteries have found comfort in the gentle presence of Kota, our certified grief support dog. Kota, a black Labrador and Weimaraner mix, is much more than a familiar face at our funeral homes and cemeteries — he is part of the Forest Meadows family. Wearing his signature American flag vest that reads, “Please Pet Me, I’m Friendly,” Kota quietly offers comfort and companionship to grieving families during difficult moments. Both Kota and his owner completed professional training and certification to serve families through grief support. Known for his calm and affectionate personality, Kota has a remarkable ability to sense when someone needs comfort most. Despite his large
18

size, he is incredibly gentle — patient enough for the owner’s nine grandchildren to crawl and climb all over him without concern. One especially memorable moment involved a 94-year-old veteran attending a funeral service. The veteran was emotional and understandably overwhelmed. Kota calmly walked over, rested beside him, and gently placed his head near the man’s lap. The veteran hugged Kota and quietly said, “I feel like he really cares.” In that moment, Kota brought peace and reassurance when words alone could not. Whether greeting guests at one of our funeral homes or quietly walking cemetery grounds, Kota continues to provide kindness, compassion, and comfort to countless families throughout our community.

Terri’s Two Cents: MoneyHabits TEACH KIDS REAL MONEY HABITS EARLY USING SIMPLE CHORE SYSTEMS THAT BUILD AWARENESS, CONFIDENCE, AND UNDERSTANDING OF HOW PROFIT WORKS.
Kids don’t need complicated financial lessons. They need simple, consistent systems. One of the best ways to teach profit early is by using three buckets: spend, save, and grow. Start with chores. Assign a dollar value so they earn money through effort. Once they’re paid, divide that money into the three buckets. Spend is for immediate wants. Save is for something bigger down the road. Grow is where the real lesson happens. This is money that builds over time. When kids choose to do extra chores, spend less, or hold onto their money longer, they begin to see it increase. That increase is profit. This approach turns everyday decisions into meaningful lessons. Kids start connecting effort to reward and choices to outcomes without needing a lecture. The goal isn’t perfection. It’s awareness. When kids understand that money can grow based on their decisions, they gain confidence. And confidence is what turns small habits into lifelong financial skills. https://www.abacusgal.com/
“When kids learn that money grows through effort and smart choices, they don’t just earn dollars, they build confidence that shapes how they think forever.” 24

IRISH DANCING G I V E S Y O U R C H I L D ‘ T H E W O R L D ’!
Gainesville Dance Academy is our city’s Irish dancing school. Preschoolers to professionals compete and perform exciting Irish dance – think Riverdance. “Boys and girls train all year in our beautiful southwest studio,” says owner and certified teacher Sarah Ingley. “Even beginners are onstage every month, from Florida’s grandest performing arts centers, to free festivals, to competitions.” This year, students danced in national tours of both Celtic Throne (Sarasota) and The Celtic Angels (Jacksonville; Ocala). March shows included TV20 News, a UF conference, and a St. Augustine parade. In June’s North American Championships, an Academy teen defended her #1 title as her division’s winner! The Academy hosts master teachers from Disney, Riverdance, and Lord of the Dance. “Above all, I want Academy dancers to be joyful and strong,” says Ingley. “I am making dancers, but the dancers are making memories. They’re making friends. They’re building emotional resilience and mental discipline, while getting super fit. We provide something very special.” gvilledance.com

Making Memories Last PRIORITIZING THE MOMENTS THAT MATTER
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY SUZANNE PORATH
Over the years I have taken thousands of photos. As I write this, my phone shamelessly tells me I have 40,408 photos saved to the cloud… a daunting number. With each photo I take, prior memories get pushed farther into the recesses of my digital graveyard and lost to the years. The exception? The images I print and frame. In opening up Gainesville Picture Framers, that has been a priority– helping others move their memories from digital detritus to living representations of love on the wall. From phone to frame, we are able to accommodate the entire process; getting cherished memories printed and preserved. https://www.gainesvillepictureframers.com/

The Gamers’ Retreat Personalized Gaming Bedroom
When the Make-A-Wish Foundation asked our team to transform a young gamer’s bedroom, the goal was to create an immersive, functional space tailored to his personality, all within three days before the final reveal. The design centered on his love of gaming, blending adventure, comfort, and practicality. Day one, we reworked the layout and demoed the existing closet to create a hidden gaming room behind a secret door, turning an underused area into a dedicated gaming zone. We added a loft above the new closet to maximize the footprint and create another hangout area. By the end of the first day, the major construction elements
were complete, providing the foundation for the rest of the transformation. On day two, finishes and custom details brought the vision to life. Painting, wallpaper, LED lighting, gaming decor, and a Minecraft-inspired mural added personality while keeping the design cohesive. By day three, carpet, wallpaper, furniture, and decor were completed. In just 72 hours, the bedroom became a gaming retreat, creating a memorable experience for the child and his family. https://kaelynschmidtdesign.com/

Four Paws, Endless Roads An unforgettable cross-country journey that strengthened the bond with my dog.

T R AV E L J OU R N A L | HEA LT H + WE LLN E SS
Sharing my days with the best friend and coworker imaginable—Allie, our Rat Terrier-Chihuahua mix and beloved office dog. She greeted everyone who walked through the door, brought smiles to the team, and made the office feel a little more like home. More than a pet, she was part of our family. Last summer, Allie took on a new role: co-captain of a six-week cross-country RV adventure. Together, we explored the American West, turning the open road into our home and the mountains into her playground. Watching Allie experience the towering peaks of Utah and Colorado was unforgettable. She ran through alpine meadows, explored winding trails, and soaked in every new scent and sight with endless curiosity. Her enthusiasm reminded me to appreciate the simple joys of each day. What made the trip truly special was the time we spent together. Away from the demands of everyday life, we shared quiet
mornings, scenic hikes, campfires under the stars, and countless miles of adventure. Every moment strengthened the bond we had built over the years. That journey remains one of the greatest gifts of my life. When I think of Allie, I picture her standing proudly against a backdrop of mountains, ears perked, ready for whatever came next. She embraced every adventure with joy, courage, and an open heart. I will always carry the image of her small, brave spirit framed by those massive peaks. Though she is no longer by my side, the memories of that incredible summer continue to bring a smile to my face. Her spirit lives on in every trail we explored, every mountain vista we admired, and every life she touched along the way. She was truly a once-in-a-lifetime companion, and I will always be grateful for the adventures we shared. https://momentumrehabandchiropractic.com/

Why I Have Pet Insurance AND WHY I NOW RECOMMEND IT TO EVERY PET OWNER.
There is nothing quite like getting home after a long day to a dog who is thrilled to see you, every single time, as if you have been gone for years instead of hours. I have two Shih Tzus, Kirbe and Yoshi, and every morning they wake me up, ready to take on the day before I have even had my coffee. We never really expect anything to go wrong. But sometimes it does. If you have ever sat in an emergency animal hospital at two in the morning, you know the feeling, watching the total climb while you wait to learn whether the thing that scared you is actually serious. A single emergency visit can run well over a thousand dollars, and once diagnostics or surgery are involved, it climbs much higher. I have sat in that waiting room more than once, and that is why I got pet insurance for them. It works like your home or auto insurance. You pay a set premium each month, you choose your own deductible, and once you meet it, the plan reimburses a set percentage of the bill at any licensed vet. It does not make a sick pet less frightening, but it does mean you are not facing the bill alone. That peace of mind, knowing that if something serious ever happened I would not be left without a way to pay for it, is the reason I have it, and why I recommend it to other pet owners. https://gainesville.greatflorida.com/

TREY & KATIE
KENNEDY
ON MARRIAGE, KIDS, AND THE COMEDY OF REAL LIFE
44
I NSP IR E D BY | L I FE + C ULT U RE
Trey Kennedy makes a living finding comedy in regular life. Marriage. Toddlers. Yoga pants. The Thursday-night scramble between school dropoffs, soccer practice, and whatever has to be done by morning. Twelve years in, it shows: millions of followers across every platform, three stand-up specials, a sold-out Relatable Tour, and a style of humor fans send each other captioned, “Are you watching me?” He delivers the kind of comedy that travels because everyone’s living some version of it. Katie, his wife of six years, is a former biomedical engineer who also built a modeling career. She’s now raising their kids and co-hosting Correct Opinions alongside Trey — the show where the two of them swap takes on marriage, parenting, and whatever came up that week. Trey has been at this longer than people realize. An Edmond, Oklahoma kid who grew up playing basketball described himself as a “shy kid who never thought he’d be an entertainer.” He started making videos while attending Oklahoma State University. After building millions of followers on Vine before the platform shut down, he gave himself six months on Instagram and Facebook to see whether he could rebuild from zero. He did. Stand-up soon followed. His first special, Are You For Real?, streams on YouTube; the second, Grow Up, on Amazon Prime; the third, built around the Relatable Tour, wrapped earlier this year. “I’ve been trying to be funny every week for like twelve years now,” he says. A slow climb, made one bit at a time.
“I’ve been trying to be funny every week for like twelve years now.” Most of what Trey writes lately starts in his own kitchen. Thomas is three and a half, and he is, in his father’s words, “a movie.” He narrates his own life from the moment his eyes open and mispronounces words in ways his parents now repeat to each other because no one else would believe them. His younger sister, Eva, is what Katie calls “the calm one.” With a third now in the mix, the Kennedys are officially outnumbered. After six years of marriage, Trey and Katie have learned that the partnership runs best when it gets its own time on the calendar. So once a week, they leave the kids with a sitter and go out for coffee. “You need a system,” Katie says. “It’s about taking time to look each other in the eye. Not the kids. Not the cameras. Just each other.” The same instinct shapes the work. Most of Trey’s trial and error happens onstage or on Instagram, but the first read is always Katie’s. “There’s only been one time ever I’ve had to be like, ‘you’re not doing that,’” she says. The rest of the time, she just laughs first.

PET OWNERSHIP’S IMPACT ON CHILD DEVELOPMENT Children benefit in many ways from owning a pet. Pets can provide many opportunities that help them grow their emotional intelligence as well as teaching practical life skills, fostering independence and seeing what commitment means firsthand. Because pets communicate without language, children observe nonverbal communication and can develop empathy and ability to respond to the feelings of others. Toddlers are at a stage where they play rough with pets; preschool age children like to pet the animal over and over. By the time a child is five or six, you begin to see more sophisticated, gentle behaviors, such as hugging and massaging. Responsibility along with patience, duty, and even sacrifice can be developed in a deeper way with pet ownership. Children are typically on the receiving end of their care and strive for independence. Caring for a pet places them in the role of provider and allows for role-playing actions that will be required of them as they grow older and become more autonomous. While the loss of a pet is always sad, it is inevitable due to its shorter life span. It is important not to shield a child from the grief associated with losing a pet because it is an opportunity to learn to let go, deal with loss, and move on. Children learn that the feeling of love remains forever after the pet has departed, and this experience brings home the abstract concept and the durability of love. https://www.millhopper.com/
