LMS offers an authentic Montessori program from early childhood through high school, adhering to principles and scientific methods for your child’s development.
The elementary learning environment (grades 1-6) fosters independence and focus through individual or small group work, natural lighting, soft colors, and organized, accessible materials. New students quickly adapt to Montessori’s hands-on, interest-driven teaching. The classroom is a vibrant, happy community where students explore, create, and reflect, with teachers offering support and introducing new material as needed. Clear expectations are balanced with openended opportunities, promoting both comfort and inspiration for learning.
Our Secondary Montessori program serves 7th - 10th grade with expansion of grade levels each year.
We integrate rigorous academics with purposeful work, preparing students to become selfconfident, contributing adults. Our approach addresses adolescents’ physical, emotional, social, and cognitive growth, fostering creativity, critical thinking, and independence. Beyond challenging their intellect, compassion, diplomacy and collaboration are developed through personally experiencing human and nature interdependence. Students also learn business and entrepreneurship skills through hands-on participation in real economic activity provided by Laniakea’s micro-economy program.
We are accepting 3 new students to join our Secondary program. Students must have a strong work ethic with a positive behavior record.
Summer is winding down, kids are getting back to school, and soon fall will be here. Our carefree days of slower morning routines and spending more time adventuring are exchanged for busier school and sports routines and schedules. The summers tend to progressively feel like they fly by the older we get, as do the years, but the simple pleasures of summer never get old. And here in Gainesville, even though summer’s coming to an end, we still have some hot days in store for us, but we know we have a great fall ahead to look forward to as well!
Since we associate the “back to school” season with kids, our August issue is dedicated to these cutest members of our community— our kids and also our pets. This issue is definitely one of my favorites. Having always had a home full of boisterous pets, I continue to be fascinated by the special bond between our kids and our pets, and the love and joy they bring to our world. They both have a way of making us feel special, and their loyalty and sense of wonder are refreshing.
In this issue, we take you into the lives of some of our local business owners and the children and pets (and horses!) they cherish. And as always, don’t forget to check out our Local Favorite Picks, our Calendar of events with new fall happenings, and all the fun and worthwhile activities going on around town in our City Scene.
We hope this issue inspires you to pour a little extra into the kids and fur babies in your life. Here’s to our little ones and the pets who make everything better!
Happy August and see you around town!

When designing a family-friendly home, practical layouts and thoughtful details can make daily life much easier. Many families today love split floor plans, which place the primary suite on one side of the house and the kids’ bedrooms on the other, with shared living areas in between. This setup offers privacy for parents while keeping everyone connected.
Flex spaces are another top request. Families appreciate having an extra room—like a bonus area above the garage or a dedicated hangout on the main floor—where kids can play games, watch
movies, or set up a ping pong table. It’s a great way to keep toys and noise contained.
Pet-friendly features are also in high demand. Indoor dog wash stations have become a staple in many custom homes over the past decade, providing a convenient spot to bathe pets, especially during colder months.
Another simple but handy upgrade is a built-in dog bowl faucet. Adding a small faucet above your pet’s water area makes refilling bowls quick and mess-free.
By including features like these, families can enjoy a home designed to meet the needs of both kids and pets, making everyday living more comfortable, organized, and fun for everyone.

The connection between human and horse can be profound, creating a powerful bond that transcends species and touches the soul.
HORSE: a large domesticated mammal with solid hooves and a flowing mane and tail used for riding, racing and pulling loads.*
I’d argue that definition falls far short. A horse is beauty, majesty, spirit, strength and compassion. That’s not just who they are. They also empower this within us.
I’m grateful to have been born into a life with horses. I have a photo of Mom holding me up in the saddle, less than a year old. The gentle giant, Silver, and I become fast friends. Beyond that, Silver would become my teacher.
Patience was lesson one.
The old saying about leading a horse to water? Well… If you’ve never had a horse laugh at you, I promise, it’s a real thing. They have moods, humor and love. Horses possess an uncanny ability to read you. Whether it’s to challenge or empathize, they make you better.
New horse, new lessons. My pony? Definition of stubborn. My quarter horse? Hated sitting still. Adopting a pair of yearling wild mustangs? A whole new book. From taming to haltering to breaking, the journey of trust, respect and learning to communicate built bonds that transcend all. Brandy is now 32. She still acts like a teenager, annoyed by my presence. She makes faces, then follows me around for walks and cuddles.
In my youth, I didn’t appreciate those lessons. But now, I clearly see how horse people are different. Tough but compassionate. More confident and resilient. Looking at my older patients that still ride, they just keep going. They’re active and happy and strong. A lifetime of giving, that’s a horse, even after they’ve gone.
I have yet to experience a day without one. I’m not sure what that would be like. For the bond with a horse is deep, like a kinship of souls. That’s why I love supporting organizations such as Horses-N-Heroes of Marion
County, a mentoring experience for young girls. And the Retirement Home For Horses in Alachua, because they, like us, deserve care and respect until the very end. A bond with a horse is like none other, one I hope more people have the chance to experience.

Pelvic floor dysfunction is not exclusive to adults-- it can significantly impact children and infants, affecting their physical and emotional well-being. Conditions like bedwetting, bowel or bladder leakage, constipation, and pelvic pain can erode a child’s confidence, leading to embarrassment and social withdrawal. In babies, digestive issues such as gassiness, fussiness, or constipation cause discomfort, often leaving caregivers feeling helpless. Recognizing and addressing these issues early is vital to improving quality of life.
Caregivers may notice abdominal or pelvic pain, delayed potty training, or persistent bedwetting beyond age four. Frequent or urgent urination, straining during urination, or recurrent urinary tract infections may also signal pelvic floor issues. Constipation can present as fewer than three bowel movements weekly, hard or painful stools, fecal smearing, or unusual pooping postures like standing or leg-crossing. In infants, watch for excessive gassiness, fussiness, difficulty burping or passing gas, loud feeding sounds, or fewer than one daily bowel movement or firm stools.
Pediatric pelvic therapy targets organ and musculoskeletal dysfunction through tailored techniques to strengthen weak muscles, relieve tightness, and improve coordination. Treatment can include biofeedback, manual therapy, specific exercises, and education on pelvic health. This approach alleviates physical symptoms, boosts self-esteem, and encourages social engagement, empowering children to regain confidence and thrive.
Therapy begins with a review of your child’s medical history and an evaluation of the organs and musculoskeletal system surrounding the abdomen and pelvis, typically with the child fully clothed. For infants, assessments also include intraoral mobility. Sessions are engaging and supportive, often involving collaboration with pediatricians,
urologists, or gastroenterologists for comprehensive care. Families receive guidance on home strategies, including bathroom routines, dietary modifications, hydration, and exercise.
If symptoms persist for over two weeks, disrupt daily life, or cause emotional distress, consult your child’s pediatrician to rule out infections or anatomical issues, then seek a pelvic floor therapist for specialized care. Early intervention helps to prevent complications and supports a child’s physical and emotional health. Act promptly to help your child overcome pelvic health challenges and start their journey to recovery.

The Lancaster Correctional Institution, in partnership with Gilchrist County Animal Services, runs an extraordinary program called Cuffs and Collars, a program aimed at increasing the adoptability of shelter dogs while teaching inmates valuable life skills. Over a 4-6 week period, volunteers work with inmate handlers to train the dogs in basic obedience and socialization techniques.
The dogs are trained in seven basic obedience skills such as accepting a friendly stranger, sitting politely for petting, and walking through a crowd. Upon program completion, they are available for adoption for just $75, which includes spay/neuter, rabies vaccinations, and identification chip.
Jon Reed, Correctional Program Administrator, says, “We are not only saving dogs from being euthanized, we’re teaching our handlers valuable life lessons such as responsibility, empathy and unconditional love. All of the Lancaster inmates will get out, therefore we are making better neighbors.”
One of the program’s dedicated volunteers, Sharon Vogel, owner of Earthwise Pet Jonesville, was recently named Volunteer of the Year at Lancaster. A weekly presence at the facility for the past year, Vogel supports the inmate handlers and the dogs in their training. “I love getting to know all the dogs being rescued and seeing them get adopted,” she says. “I also enjoy working with the

handlers - seeing them be responsible for the dogs and teaching them good pet nutrition.”
Among the many dogs to pass through the program, one has left a lasting mark—Freda, an easygoing dog who began training in 2020. Freda remained at the facility due to a knee injury. Five years later, it was time for Freda to find a permanent home—but staff were determined to find the right one. After much encouragement, Sharon agreed to adopt her.
“Freda is so even-tempered, gets along with other dogs, and loves coming to the store each day,” Vogel shares. “I am so happy to have her in my life.”

What if you couldn’t afford to get your pet emergency medical care?
Shakespeare Animal Fund, a 21-year-old nonprofit, has come to Alachua County with one mission: to help pay emergency veterinary bills for elderly, disabled, and low-income individuals with suffering or dying pets and not enough money for treatment.
After raising well over a million dollars in Nevada, Shakespeare has now opened a branch here and is seeking volunteers, board members, and sponsors. Many people go without food and other essentials to save for vet care—and still fall short. That’s where Shakespeare steps in.

For families in Gainesville, the arrival of a new baby has meant choosing between the two local hospitals with Labor & Delivery units or planning a home birth. While these options serve many well, they also leave a significant gap—especially for those seeking a more natural, personalized birth experience with access to water birth. That’s where Gainesville’s new birth center steps in.
Birth centers provide a unique and much-needed alternative for expectant parents. Along with homebirth, they are the only local options that offer water birth—a practice shown to reduce the need for epidurals and decrease the risk of perineal tearing. In fact, many refer to water as the “aqua-dural” because of its calming, pain-relieving qualities. In Florida, epidurals are not available in out-of-hospital settings, making water a powerful, natural comfort tool during labor.
Safety is a top priority at the birth center. All clients undergo thorough health screenings to ensure that the setting is appropriate for their birth. Additionally, the center is located within ten minutes of a hospital with a Labor & Delivery unit, providing peace of mind and a clear path for transfer if necessary.
This proximity is especially important for families who live further away from a hospital than is safe to consider homebirth. The birth center offers a balanced solution: the comfort and warmth of a homelike environment—complete with water birth options, freedom to move, eat, and be surrounded by family— combined with the assurance of nearby emergency medical assistance.
Gainesville now has a new option that blends the best of both worlds.

LEARN MORE: Having access to a Birth Center is a movement toward personalized, evidence-based care in an underserved region. It opens up choices for families seeking a more natural approach to birth without sacrificing safety or access to emergency care.

Children benefit in many ways from owning a pet. Pets can provide many opportunities that help them grow their emotional intelligence as well as teaching practical life skills, fostering independence and seeing what commitment means firsthand. Because pets communicate without language, children observe nonverbal communication and can develop empathy and ability to respond to the feelings of others.
Toddlers are at a stage where they play rough with pets; preschool age children like to pet the animal over and over. By the time a child is five or six, you begin to see more sophisticated, gentle behaviors, such as hugging and massaging. Responsibility along with patience, duty, and even sacrifice can be developed in a deeper way with pet ownership.
Children are typically on the receiving end of their care and strive for independence. Caring for a pet places them in the role of provider and allows for role-playing actions that will be required of them as they grow older and become more autonomous.
While the loss of a pet is always sad, it is inevitable due to its shorter life span. It is important not to shield a child from the grief associated with losing a pet because it is an opportunity to learn to let go, deal with loss, and move on. Children learn that the feeling of love remains forever after the pet has departed, and this experience brings home the abstract concept and the durability of love.

Getting older is a natural part of life, but the effects of aging can result in the presence of wrinkles, crow ’ s feet, and smile lines. Cellular changes in the body, sun damage, reduced collagen production, and deep muscle contractions in the face all contribute to the look of deep-set wrinkles and facial lines
At Gainesville Dermatology Aesthetic Center, we strive to provide the most professional and quality care possible to our clients. Give us a call today to schedule your BOTOX® consultation with one of our highly trained and experienced injectors.
