I hope this letter finds you in good health and high spirits as August rolls around reminding us school is starting back up, and Summer is winding down.
This issue is always one of my favorites. I suppose because of the immense joy that our pets and children bring to our lives, and especially the bond between the pets and the kids who love them.
This special companionship we have with our pets is one of unconditional love, the opportunity to learn, grow and develop essential life skills in a nurturing environment. And who could ignore the bond between kids and their furry or feathery friends? And our pets aren’t just the domestic ones. In this issue we also capture the bond between kids and the livestock they train, work with and love. These bonds are often deep and meaningful, fostering qualities like empathy, responsibility, and companionship.
What children and pets share in common is that they need us. They need our care, our attention, and our intention which shapes how they are raised and who they become. We hope this issue inspires you to pour a little extra into the children and pets in your life this month.
Cheers to August! And see you around town!

With over 5 million cases diagnosed in the United States each year, skin cancer is America's most common cancer. Fortunately, skin cancer is also one of the most preventable forms of cancer. About 90 percent of nonmelanoma skin cancers and 85 percent of melanoma cases are associated with exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun.
Gainesville Dermatology experts recommend the daily use of a broadspectrum sunscreen, as this protects the skin against harmful UVA and UVB rays. With an SPF minimum rating of 35, you can protect against sunburn which reduces the risk of skin cancer, helps prevent photodamage and photoaging, or premature skin aging.

Photography Impact Hive Photography Stretch ZoneEnjoy hiking with your pet!
Florida is known for being unbearably hot a third of the year, but as Summer winds down and land activities become more bearable, North Central Florida offers some of the most unique trails. While most locally know the usuals: San Felasco Hammock Preserve and Devils Millhopper.
But an hour northeast in Green Cove Springs off of US-17 there is a trail called Black Creek Trail. This trail is near the mouth of the creek as it runs into the St. Johns. This trail offers a bunch of hiking, biking, and running trails. There are many side trails to get lost on. And
this area is unique as its 10 minutes from the activity of Green Cove, but also 10 minutes away from the rural areas east of Starke.
An hour due north of Gainesville is the beautiful Osceola National Forest with plenty of trails. Two of my favorites are the Fanny Bay Boardwalk that ventures onto a dock in a swamp. Tons of signs with information on the area and very quiet and serene. Every time Mabel and I have done this trail, we have seen a deer. Additionally, the Ocean Pond offers both fishing, hiking, and many other outdoor
activities including camping, birdwatching, and seasonal hunting in other areas of the forest.
Most locals have heard of Cedar Key southwest of Gainesville, but did you know the Cedar Key Scrub Preserve offers over 5 miles of trails only about 10-15m from the town of Cedar Key? While this tends to be sandier with less trees, in cooler seasons this offers a great opportunity to see everything from Eagles, Hawks, Bobcats, and Deer.
As always, make sure to pack some bug spray because it is Florida.

As Floridians start cooling down from the boiling heat of midsummer, it’s a good time to take our four-legged family members out for some exercise and outdoor excursions. Gainesville has a wealth of fantastic places you can bring your dogs to hike, camp, or hang out with their pals, and you can find a variety of options to enjoy in and around the city.
POSSUM CREEK DOG PARK
This park is popular for hikers and families, with its pavilions, nature trails, playground and sports field. It also has a large, off-leash pet friendly area with two different enclosures for big and small pups. There’s plenty of room to toss a ball or frisbee and let your dogs romp and play, plus shady benches and water fountains to keep both pets and owners hydrated. Hours: 6am to 6pm

With covered seating that’s cooled/heated in summer and winter, Lebowski’s is a dogfriendly outdoor bar with plenty of diversions for both dogs and their humans. There’s an off-leash area available for daily, monthly, or annual members, and a leashed-only section where anyone can hang out. Food trucks are available if you need a nosh, and there’s a pet playground for your dog to run around in and play with the other canine customers.

Dogs (and other domesticated pets) are allowed to join you camping in designated areas of all Florida State Parks, as long as they are properly leashed and supervised. Did you know your child can be a dependent and have earned income of up to $13,850 and pay no federal income tax? This could mean that your child can enter the workforce while not affecting your tax filing. This also means that they can start contributing to their own retirement account such as a Roth IRA (consult your financial or tax advisor). For small business owners, this could also be an additional tax deduction.

Agriculture-based youth development programming is alive and well in Alachua County! Between the numerous 4-H clubs and FFA chapters, there is a place for all youth to take their passion for animals and turn it into an experience that leaves them with skills for a lifetime. Over 3,000 youth in Alachua County participate in programming offered by 4-H or FFA each year, and 300+ youth took it a step further by exhibiting in the 2023 Alachua County Youth Fair & Livestock Show where they spent months preparing for a weeklong agricultural entrepreneurial experience. These youth raised market animals, showed their breeding animals, and exhibited their non-livestock projects at the fair where thousands of people come to see the fruits of their labor,
including 700 Alachua County elementary students who may not otherwise have the chance to experience agriculture in such a hands on way.
Many will claim that 4-H and FFA are creating the leaders of tomorrow. Those of us involved in these organizations recognize, however, that we are instead working alongside the leaders of today. Both organizations feature a state officer group that works towards bettering the programs for youth all across the state. These youth state officers go above and beyond typical teenage expectations to be true leaders for their peers in ways that many adults never have the skills to do.
Many youth are members of both organizations, and this is highly encouraged. Youth ages 5-18 can be involved in 4-H,
and FFA is available in many middle and high schools around the county. By participating in both 4-H and FFA, youth are afforded the most opportunities to enhance their skills and set themselves up to be successful in the future endeavors. From public speaking, the agriculture industry, to leadership to veterinary science, 4-H and FFA are here to serve youth in as many ways as possible.
Visit https://sfyl.ifas.ufl.edu/alachua/4-h-youth-development/ for more information on 4-H in Alachua County, and visit https://flaffa.org/ membership/ to find an FFA chapter near you. To learn more about the Alachua County Youth Fair & Livestock show, visit https://acyfls.com to see how your child can get involved.

There is so much misinformation being given to pet owners regarding nutrition. It’s right there on the ingredients list, no hiding it!! The food we feed our pets really makes a difference in their overall health. Come in and let our staff help you pick the right food for your dog or cat. We specialize in natural pet foods and treats such as dry, freeze dried, and raw. We also have a large selection of toys, litter, leashes, collars and much more. In today’s market, it is difficult to sift through the various opinions out there as to what is appropriate to feed our dogs and cats. In order to assist consumers, navigate these tumultuous times, our staff has undergone professional training in Pet Nutrition and Raw Food feeding and earned their Pet Nutrition Specialist status. We also offer full-service one-on-one professional grooming and have Jonesville’s first indoor Self Wash. We hold regular pet rescue adoption events and fundraisers to support local rescues. Most importantly, pets are always welcome!
Through my volunteer work with Paws on Parole and my passion for animals, I opened my store to provide pet owners with the knowledge to keep our pets healthy.

ANY CRAFT, ANY TIME
It’s summertime – and time to enjoy all the Florida sunshine has to offer. Playing, and being outside is just as much fun for your dog as it is for you. Here are a few tips to keep our furry family members happy – and safe – during Gainesville’s hot summer days.
Dogs don’t have the ability to regulate their body temperature through perspiration as we do. Having access to cool, clean water throughout the day allows them to cool internally and stay healthy. Freezing treats, or even favorite toys in a kong or just a block of ice is a great and fun way to provide a stimulating play activity for your pup. Kiddie pools are another perfect way to give your pup a safe and fun way to beat the heat, just make sure you change the water frequently.
It’s tempting to bring your pup with you as you run errands throughout your day. Please, leave them at home in the comfort of
air conditioning. Never leave your pup unattended in a car, even just for a few minutes.
Often, well-intentioned dog parents want to shave their double-coated pup (think labs, huskies, retrievers) believing it will keep them cooler and reduce shedding. But all that hair is there for a reason — it has heating, cooling, and protective properties. The best way to keep your double-coated dog comfortable and to minimize shedding is with routine baths and shedding treatments and regular brushing to maintain their coat and remove loose hair.
Scenthound is a wellness-focused, membership-based service providing hygiene essentials and grooming for your dog. With two locations in Gainesville, caring for your dog is fast, easy and affordable!

Planning a vacation can be exciting, but arranging boarding or a sitter for your four-legged friends can be nerve-wracking, especially when all you want to do is bring them with you. After all, your pets are a part of your family, so why not bring them with you on your vacation?
Bringing your dog on vacation can be a wonderful way to strengthen your bond, explore new scenery and create lasting memories. It can also be a nice distraction from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. With a little planning and preparation, you can enjoy a relaxing vacation with your furry friend at your side.
While planning this experience, you will want to look for accommodations that are pet friendly. Bonus points if you can find a place with a dog park or spacious room for you and your pet to explore! Nestled in the Goethe State Forest, Black Prong Equestrian Village offers just that, with both pet-friendly accommodations and unique amenities like a dog park and direct access to hundreds of miles of trails to explore in the forest.
Just as you will be planning activities and packing your own suitcase for this adventure, you’ll need to prepare your canine friend for the trip and make a checklist of essential items to make sure are in your dog’s carry-on. Some things to consider:
1. Pack enough food for the duration of your stay and water for the long car ride
2. Ensure vaccinations, flea and tick control, and any other medications are up to date
3. Food and water bowls
4. Leash and collar with ID tags
5. Dog bed
6. Dog toys
7. Treats
8. Waste bags

There are many reasons you may want to sign your child up for dance lessons. A fun and creative work out, dance helps children develop muscle tone, improves coordination, and increases physical stamina and strength. And while dancing is a great form of exercise, its benefits reach well beyond the dance floor.
Dancing is an art that encourages children to creatively express themselves through movement building self-esteem and confidence.
Dance can build your child’s focus, concentration, memory, and pattern recognition as they learn choreography.
Dance is a highly social activity that allows children to make new friends as they learn to communicate, cooperate, and work as part of a team.
Best of all, dance is fun! And, it can motivate kids to stay active as they grow into adulthood.
As a professional dancer who has enjoyed a lifetime of benefits, I am grateful my parents helped me discover the joy of dance.
I encourage you to do the same. If you missed out as a child, it isn’t too late. There are a variety of studios offering adult dance training too – ballet, ballroom, Zumba and more.

Dogs have always been a part of my life. Growing up, my siblings were much older so the family dog was my best buddy and playmate. I couldn’t imagine my life without one. Then, after my best friend of 19 years, a Rat Terrier-Chihuahua named Casey passed away, my heart was broken. Depression set in. Our bond had been so strong, I was sure that she had been a once in a life time dog for me.
About three months later, I decided it was time to try and find a new buddy. There were a few failed attempts, but then Allie and I met at a pet rescue. It was instant love for both of us. When she put her chin on my chest and fell asleep, a great wave of happiness came over me. I didn’t realize how much I’d been grieving until that moment. And just like that, Allie made me feel whole again.
She is a constant companion. Mama’s bestie. There’s not many places I go without her. Allie had been a stay at home pup until she accepted the Puplick Relations position at North Florida Rehab and Chiropractic. We knew Allie would be a great candidate for the position as she had been there for me after the loss of my father and my car accident. She takes her job seriously and works very hard to fulfill her duties. Many of our patients have been involved in traumatic accidents and Allie is always there to comfort and support them. Her presence brings a smile to everyone who comes to the practice.
https://rehabandchiropractic.com/
Allie has become so popular she has her own Instagram and Facebook pages (LifeofAllieKat), where you can follow her adventures in the office, at home and on vacation. Allie enjoys mountain biking, hiking, camping, serving as a National BARK Ranger and lounging in the pool.
