APRIL – Time to Explore! In our busy hectic lives we all lead, we really must remember to leave some room for exploring, for trying new places and things, for being a beginner, and even for getting lost off the beaten path. It is those times that are unstructured and open-ended where the space exists for connections to be made, friendships to be fostered and trust to be built. Our area here is filled with tons of great things to do and places to explore – right here in town at our beautiful shops, and just outside of Gainesville in the little towns such as Micanopy (where I live), High Springs, Bronson, and Cedar Key. When I first moved here several years ago, I was so excited to check out and explore all these areas, and I’m looking forward to now getting back into that habit! It is indeed hard to get away from our work-centric lifestyles, but "adventures" and “exploration” doesn't even have to be something big and crazy. It can be playing a board game out on the patio, walking a new trail, or going out to find a restaurant we've never been to before in a different part of town. Our hope is that this issue encourages you to make room for exploration. To prioritize time away from the regular schedule of life. To lose yourself on a trail or in a good book. To finalize that trip you’ve been thinking about, to make time for the things that matter most to you, but often come last on the calendar. Gainesville Regional Airport (GNV), in conjunction with American Airlines, is pleased to announce a new, more consistent, reliable flying schedule for its important Miami (MIA) route, which experienced disruption and interruption during the COVID-19 Pandemic. HEALING THROUGH THE POWER OF BREATH AND HOW TO GET STARTED

Breathe in, breathe out. While humans breathe over 20,000 breaths per day on average, the majority go completely unnoticed. Breath is our source of life, the first and the last marking our life cycle and our anchor to the present moment. Breathe in, breathe out. Yogic pranayama is one of the eight limbs of yoga. Prana means life force and Yama means control as the practice is designed to root the participant into the present moment providing a break from mental chatter. Possible benefits range from better sleep, to less stress, improved cognitive function, lowered blood pressure and general sense of happiness. Breathe in, breathe out. Dhyana is another limb of yoga and translates to meditation. Meditation practices often rely on breath connection as an opportunity to free the mind from thinking for a bit.

Both the regulation of breath and meditation are lifelong practices that become more comfortable over time. Breathe in, breathe out. The best way to start is to just begin. Here are some favorite easy beginner exercises:

BREATHE IN, BREATHE OUT: Set a timer for 5 minutes. As you breathe in say “in” as you breathe out say “out”. Start again whenever you lose focus. Box breathing: breath in for a count of 4, hold for a count of 4, exhale for a count of 4, hold for a count of 4. Take around 10 rounds to begin. Should you be communicating with your financial advisor and accountant more to ensure you are getting the best utility of any capital gains/losses? Should you pay your kid and when is it appropriate to do so (if you are self-employed)? Is your tax withholding from your employer, correct? Are you better off getting more money throughout the year instead of collecting a large refund? As you go through your tax season it is our recommendation that you not only take a look at what you can do about last year’s taxes but how to set yourself up for the next year using that information. The American Legion Building was not the first building located at 513 East University Avenue, now the home of the Matheson History Museum. The first known building on the site was the Florida Winter Bible Conference Tabernacle. It was constructed in 1906 by the conference to host their annual meetings, plus sessions of the popular traveling Chautauqua and lyceums. The Tabernacle had seating for almost 2,000 people and was one of the largest auditoriums in the state at the time. The city of Gainesville purchased the building in 1911 for use as a civic hall, playing host to local clubs, conventions, and conferences. In the 1920s the local American Legion post did not have a permanent home so in 1926 the city donated the Tabernacle to the legionnaires. Unfortunately, the next year the building burned down. The American Legion

members rallied and raised money for a new building, which they opened in 1933. Today that same Georgianstyled red brick building houses the museum. Micanopy If you enjoy historic towns with southern charm, you should spend some time in Micanopy. Florida’s oldest inland town turned 200 years old in 2021. Micanopy, located 1 mile off of I-75 and 10 miles south of Gainesville, is a great place to relax and get off the beaten path. The town is also accessible from S.R. 441, the fabled road on the Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers American Girl song, which runs right through the middle of Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park. Explore Fossil Hunting! “I got a feeling I know where a Meg is.”

One of the most exciting elements of exploration is the thrill of discovery; Mudslinger Tours offers just that! Journey back to the Miocene Epoch period as your guide leads you into Hogtown Creek in search of shark teeth and other vertebrate fossils. Owner of Mudslinger Tours, Hurley Hurley, explained how improper digging along creekbeds caused further erosion, prompting the city to somewhat recently ban residents from entering the waters within city parks as well as the use of any shovel in any creek beds.

Currently, you either need a private property owner’s permission for creek access, as “most of the Gainesville Creek System is private land.” It’s a common misunderstanding that all waterways are public lands, as any non-navigable waterway is private entrance only and Hogtown Creek is considered such. Hurley’s team is “Always glad to help pass on the knowledge of what we know and understand of fossil hunting here in Gainesville.” Hurley’s partner, Jessica, adds “we continue working with the city to make sure that areas we operate in and equipment and practices are approved.”

While they do offer half-day tours for all ages, they’re also happy to help further details finding the perfect experience for anyone wanting to explore history with a local fossil hunt. Fossil hunters can regularly find Bull, Silky, Snaggletooth, Tiger, Hammerhead, Lemon, and even the coveted Megalodon shark’s teeth right in Gainesville! What is an insurance review? A common misconception is that an insurance policy is just “set it and forget it”. As life changes, your insurance policy may need to adapt to those changes as well. While the review process should be simple, it is important to do this with your insurance agent on an annual or semi-annual basis. Reviewing your home, auto, and life insurance can help ensure you are properly protected.

Home and Auto Insurance:

As your net worth grows, your liability coverage should grow along with it. Protection from lawsuits resulting from an injury is one of the most important features of your insurance policy. Have you had upgrades to your home? Kitchen or bathroom remodels? These are important things to consider when determining the replacement coverage of your home. Need to know what to expect with a newly licensed driver or thinking about purchasing a new vehicle? Both can affect your auto insurance. Another important thing to discuss, is now the time to get an umbrella policy?

Life Insurance:

First things first, are the beneficiaries on your life insurance policy correct? Do you have a contingent beneficiary listed? Do you understand the benefits of both term and permanent insurance? Are you happy with the amount of death benefit you will be leaving behind? All these questions can help determine not only the amount of life insurance that is needed but also help put in place the people you want to receive the death benefit. Making sure the beneficiaries on your life insurance policy are up to date is an important step that could help avoid probate. Your agent should be someone you trust to look out for your best interest. Discuss these questions regularly with them so you are never found in a situation that you were not prepared for. After having a review of your insurance policies, you will have a better knowledge of what is protecting you along with the peace of mind knowing you are set up for success.
