Home.  So much is contained in that simple, little four-letter word. Home is where the heart is.  It’s both where we come from, and where we live right now.  It’s our grounding. Our base.  Our launchpad.  It’s where we start and end each day.  And while the particulars look different for each of us, the meaning and value it holds for all of us is undeniable.

Author Wendy Wunder said, “The magic thing about home is that it feels good to leave, and it feels even better to come back.”  As we thought about homes - we wanted to highlight what makes homes special.  That of course includes the aesthetic and design, our yards, and what we fill our homes with.

I have been blessed to call many different places home.  I’ve had the good fortune and opportunities to travel and live all over this country, and right now there’s no place I’d rather come home to, than right here, where I am.

As you flip through the pages of this issue, we hope you’ll feel encouraged and connected to the people around you – here in your city, your neighborhood, and most of all of – in your home.

Every month, we hear from readers who keep this magazine for longer than just the month labeled on the cover.  They say they hold onto it for months as coffee table art or an accessory in their home.  We feel proud to create a resource that is valued in our community and strive every month to deliver the value you expect. Breathing Room

There’s always at least one or more rooms in the house where it feels a little cramped and closed-in, and we wish we could knock out a wall or two to get some elbow room. That’s not always an option, so here are a few simple, but surprisingly dramatic design ideas that can turn a small burrow into a fresh and uncluttered haven.

BREATHING ROOM

Sometimes ‘negative space’ can actually be a positive; pushing furniture up against the walls and corners or having too much furniture can overwhelm and clutter up the room, making you feel like you’re in a Hobbit hole. Try to avoid bulky, heavy pieces like overstuffed chairs and sofas, and consider using furniture that’s lower to the ground (mid-century furniture designs are perfect for this!). These ideas help create height and space in between

and above. You’ll literally have more room to breathe.

LIGHT IT UP

It’s a simple thing, but using light colors on the walls creates an airy, open vibe that eliminates the claustrophobic cave feeling. You can always use darker accents and contrasts – such as artwork and bookshelves, for instance - just to give it some depth. You’d be surprised what letting in some light does to expand and enliven even the smallest room to make it seem more spacious.

MIRROR UNIVERSE

It’s a trick on the eyes, but reflecting the room in a mirror really makes an impact, not only in giving the impression of a bigger area, but also bouncing even more light around the room. The best place to

hang one is directly opposite a window if you have one, but if not, place it where it reflects any light source, and it’ll make a big difference.

NAKED

Undress your floors and windows! Large or shaggy rugs are space-stealers and can fill up a small space really fast. Ditto curtains and heavy treatments; they block out light, obstruct your view outside, and shrink the room. Keep it simple and minimal; if you want rugs, try using something made with bamboo, jute, or a similar material. Bamboo blinds are also fantastic for the windows and add depth as well. If drapes are a must for privacy reasons, hanging them a foot or so above the window and closer to the ceiling gives the illusion of height while also allowing natural light to come in.

Thinking of buying a used car but need a little incentive. The IRS is providing just that if you are interested in an Electric Vehicle (EV). If you buy a used electric car from a dealer for $25,000 or less, you may be eligible for a used clean vehicle tax credit. The credit the IRS is offering is 30% of the sale price with a maximum credit of $4,000.

In order for you to qualify you have to pass all of the following conditions: Be an individual who bought the vehicle for use and not for resale

• Not be the original owner

• Not be claimed as a dependent on another person’s tax return

• Not have claimed another used clean vehicle credit in the 3 years before the purchase date

In addition, your modified adjusted gross income (AGI) may not exceed: $150,000 for married filing jointly or a surviving spouse, $112,500 for heads of households or $75,000 for all other filers For the vehicle to qualify it must pass all of the following conditions:

• Have a sale price of $25,000 or less

• Have a model year at least 2 years earlier than the calendar year when you buy it.

• Not have already been transferred after August 16, 2022, to a qualified buyer.

• Have a gross vehicle weight rating of less than 14,000 pounds

• Be an eligible FCV or plug-in EV with a battery capacity of least 7 kilowatt hours

• Be for use primarily in the United States

The IRS recommends that when you purchase a used electric car from a dealer that you get the following information:

(1) Dealer’s name and taxpayer ID number

(2) Buyer’s name and taxpayer ID number

(3) Sale date and sale price

(4) Maximum credit allowable under IRC 25E

(5) Vehicle identification number (VIN),

(6) Battery capacity

Please note that purchases made before 2023 don’t qualify.

Ronald McDonald Family Room

Since 1982, RMHC North Central Florida has been keeping families close to their seriously ill children. The Ronald McDonald House provides comfy beds, home-cooked meals, and all the comforts of home to families traveling to Gainesville to seek medical care for their children. The House program is built on the simple idea that nothing else should matter when a family is focused on the health of their child -not where they can afford to stay, where they will get their next meal, or where they will lay their head at night to rest.

In 2022, our House provided 8,340 family nights for over 790 families. At the current House there are 31 rooms and in 2022 over 1,960 families had to be turned away. The top 4 health challenges experienced by our patients are: cardiac issues, premature birth, cancer, and trauma.

Now the Ronald McDonald House Charities of North Central Florida has a NEW Home. The new Home will be open in September 2023 and located at 2121 SW 16th Street, Gainesville. The new Home will have the capacity for 50 families. This will allow over 682 additional families to be served per year.

The expansion is split into two phases with Phase I beginning the renovation of the pre-existing building to restore and improve the 50 guest suites. Phase II finalizes the goal of a comprehensive range of facilities.

We exploit the fact that Aedes and Culex like to divide their eggs over multiple sites; by letting them fly out of the Station whilst carrying larvicide on their legs. They transport the larvicide and distribute it to several breeding sites around the Station. In this way, we can kill larvae in small and hard to find breeding sources before they have a chance to develop into adults. The adult mosquito also gets infected with an insect-specific fungus that kills her before she can spread disease. This specific, targeted treatment allows us to reduce the mosquito population in your yard while protecting our pollinators such as bees and butterflies.

3 Hot Trends in Kitchen Design

When designing your dream kitchen, it’s important to balance timeless features with elements that reflect your personality and design aesthetic. You may not plan to remodel your kitchen each year (does anyone do that?), but that doesn’t mean there aren’t creative ways to keep your space feeling modern and fresh.

We spoke with interior designer Brooke Cover about the trends in kitchen design she’s seeing this year, touching on everything from cabinet colors and lighting to tile and countertop combos she’s loving.

TAKING THE COUNTER MATERIAL UP THE BACKSPLASH

Although the iconic subway tile backsplash is timeless in its own right, Brooke says she is seeing a big shift toward marble slab backsplashes — which add drama and depth to the kitchen. Not only is it easier to clean than tile, but a marble backsplash and countertop also sets the tone for the entire space and makes a big statement.

WARMING UP THE WHITE

We doubt the classic white kitchen will ever completely go out of style, but trends show people are going away from the white kitchen and gray cabinets. They’re opting for white mixed with warmer wood tones, dark greens and blues. Some homeowners are mixing vintage in with the new and modern through butcher block islands or other unique cabinetry choices. Black is making a bold comeback in some kitchens, while others usher in warmth through painted islands or other darker contrast tiles in the bar area. You don’t have to leave behind the timelessness when you warm up your space if you opt for equally timeless black and wood-stained accents. If you want a quick refresh, consider adding pops of wood through cutting boards or other decor accents on countertops or open shelves.

CONTRAST, CONTRAST, CONTRAST!

From painted and stained islands to dark lower cabinetry with bright white uppers and mixed lighting fixtures, contrast is the name of the game this year. You’ll see this juxtaposition between clean white and darker colors or even this year’s favorite - greens and blues - all over newly designed kitchens. You’re not breaking any rules by coordinating sculptural pendants over the kitchen island with more vintage-inspired gooseneck sconces over the standalone bar or a chandelier over the eat-in kitchen.

I suggest viewing countertop slabs in person vs. a small sample piece because each slab has unique movement and colors. They are all so beautiful and works of art. Taking a trip to the warehouse will really help a client to understand the different types available and see the difference in the look of the material.

The Floating Lotus Spa is designed to transport you to exotic yet tranquil places. We often notice that when people enter, they have a big exhale like entering a safe and secret garden. I recently did a refresh and renovation with new flooring which lightens up everything and is also easier to keep clean and pristine. I choose a soft champagne color textured wallpaper and repainted the walls to match. I kept all the green accents which are known by color experts to bring calm and serenity. We use green in design for spaces intended to foster vitality, freshness, growth, wealth, balance, health, and youthfulness.

Each room has a special name and design to match. The Imperial Lotus has beautiful accents like a lovely antique Asian gilded lacquered screen with large lotuses. The Bamboo room makes you feel like you are on a tropical isle and the Sky Loft which houses our couple massages, private parties and events has the expansiveness of the sky and clouds. Each treatment room has its own personality where our most expert and talented therapists can help you feel like you just had a vacation and finally got to relax and release the pain and leave the worries behind!
