Better Plants Better Process Better CBD

Straight Hemp makes superior CBD products. The Plants and Process make a difference in crafting superior CBD formulas. To make a better CBD product, the selection of plants and the processes used make all the difference. It all starts with the plants. Lots of hemp used in inferior products is bred and grown for fiber in giant fields, subjected to harsh farming and harvesting conditions, dried in the fields, and mechanically harvested. That works great if you’re trying to make rope or sandals. It doesn’t work so well to produce a high-quality hemp oil for human consumption. The plants Straight Hemp uses are specially bred and grown in Colorado, Oregon, and Vermont to produce the highest-quality oil. Higher-quality plants produce higher-quality oil which allows us to create a better product. But it’s not just the plants, that’s an important first step, but it is just that, a first step. How you process both the plants and the oil makes a difference as well.

The Process Makes a Difference To get the highest quality hemp terpenes, Straight Hemp uses a steam-extraction process that takes freshly harvested, single-source hemp plants and pulls the essential oils out while they’re still fresh. This produces higher-quality terpenes and maximizes all the naturally occurring benefits of the hemp plant. Our base hemp oil is processed through CO2 extraction. Where many cheaper CBD products get their hemp oil from an alcohol extraction process, we’ve found that a dual CO2 extraction process has the ability to produce a lighter, more consistent, higher-quality oil that maximizes the retention of the qualities of the original plant. We then blend the hemp oil with our specifically selected mix of essential oil terpenes to maximize its effectiveness. All of the specific hemp terpenes in Straight Hemp’s products come from a single-source farm and processor in Willamette Valley of Oregon.

Hemp Terpenes Make a Difference The specific terpene blend of a CBD product makes a difference. It is one of the main differentiators between products and can be a significant factor in determining an individual product’s character. Most of our research and development when creating Straight Hemp’s CBD products was focused on getting the right blend of terpenes. If you have questions about a product, a dead giveaway can be the presence of Myrcene, which is often indicative of a good product. If you’re not sure, you can find the terpene levels on the lab report that every reputable supplier is required to have. Bon Appetit! And welcome Fall! With the changing seasons, especially here in North Florida with that much-needed cooler weather, comes a change in what we are craving, and with Fall that often means comfort food. Although we always love to share our local Culinary Creations and chef’s recipes with you each month, October is our most delectable issue of the year, filled with some of our favorite dishes and beverages available right here in the Gainesville area. For this issue, we had the pleasure of sitting down with various chefs and owners to learn about their stories and some of their new offerings. We’re sharing a decadently delicious French Toast Casserole recipe, and including our guide to some of our favorite Food & Drink spots including everything from ice cream and crepes, to wine and craft beers, pizza, Chinese, and seafood – Gainesville has it all! There is an art to creating a flavorful dish that not only satisfies our taste buds but evokes memories. Food brings us all together, and whether we’re sharing a meal at home with friends and family or enjoying a night out on the town, the time spent while enjoying food is invaluable. Many of you might know that I am passionate about food and wine and love to cook at home as well as eat out. The Third Generat ion M r. H a n : A l e x a n d e r H a n MR. HAN’S RESTAURANT, A GAINESVILLE CULINARY LEGEND

When did Mr. Han's Restaurant open? Mr. Han’s Restaurant opened in 1976. Has it always been at its current location? No. Originally it was located on 13th Street, near the current location of La Tienda. How did the Han Family come to Gainesville? My grandparents were visiting a friend who was a professor at the University of Florida. Their friend was telling them how Gainesville did not have any Chinese restaurants. At the time my grandparents were living in Washington D.C. and worked at a restaurant in the Capital. My grandmother knew how hard my grandfather worked for someone else and convinced my grandfather to move to Gainesville so they could run their own Chinese restaurant. That was the birth of Mr. Han’s Restaurant. What is your favorite part of the restaurant business? I enjoy seeing people enjoy their meal. As a child I basically lived at the restaurant. I had a chance to meet my dad, Eric’s patrons. My dad never met a patron that didn’t become his friend. It sparked the love of people in me. Our customers have become our family.

When you walk into Mr. Han’s, there are large photos of your dad and past patrons in China. Can you tell us about those trips? My dad would coordinate trips to China, two times a year for our patrons. He coordinated the entire trip with friends and family in China. Patrons loved being immersed in the real Chinese Culture and dad loved to share it with them. Do you have a favorite dish? The black pepper steak is definitely my favorite dish. It is so tender and different. It isn’t a complicated dish, but not simple either. I think it is just perfect. Favorite Quote or inspiration? Time does not wait for anyone. I never want to waste a moment of time. I run the family business because I enjoy being with people. I don’t sweat the small stuff either. I am a very positive person. When things do not work out, I don’t get down. I learn from them and move forward. Mr. Han’s Restaurant has been a Gainesville tradition for over 46 years. Alexander Han loves being a part of Gainesville and providing the finest, most authentic Chinese food around. F RENCH T OA S T C A S SEROL E A STAPLE OF SWEETWATER BRANCH INN’S FAMOUS BREAKFAST, THIS DECADENT SOUTHERN TREAT MAKES THE WHOLE HOUSE SMELL DELICIOUS!

INGREDIENTS • 1 stick butter • 1 cup brown sugar • French or crusty bread, enough to cover a 9 x 12 pan • 6 -8 eggs depending on egg size • 2 cups milk • 2 tsp vanilla extract • ¼ - 1 teaspoon cinnamon, to taste • ½ cup Karo syrup • Toppings of your choicee

DIRECTIONS 1. In a saucepan combine butter, brown sugar, and ½ cup Karo syrup. Cook untilcombined. 2. Pour into greased 9 x 12 glass or ceramic baking dish. 3. Cut or rip bread into bite-size pieces. Layer bread into the baking dish until 1 ½ - 2 inches thick. 4. In a separate bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, and vanilla. Pour the mixture over the bread. Make sure all bread has absorbed liquid. Top with sprinkled cinnamon. 5. Add topping ingredients. We like blueberries, cream cheese, peaches, strawberries, apples, nuts, dried fruits, or any combination of your choice! 6. Cover with plastic wrap and soak overnight. 7. Sprinkle brown sugar on top and place in preheated oven at 350 for 40 minutes until it browns and bubbles. 8. Garnish with powdered sugar, fresh fruit, or melba sauce drizzle. Serve warm.

STUBBIES & STEINS

Stubbies & Steins was a Gainesville Institution, bringing craft and imported beer, clever beer t-shirts and German sausages to Gainesville in the setting of a neighborhood pub. “My dad, Gar and I wanted to create a place where people would want to hang out, where they would want to come together through food and beverage.” says Berkeley Hoflund. That is exactly what Stubbies & Steins became known for, a place to visit with friends and enjoy a unique beer and authentic German sausages. Berkeley Hoflund grew up in Gainesville. Her father, Gar Hoflund, a Chemical Engineering Professor at the University of Florida, fostered in Berkeley a love of travel and a deep bond between the two was forged. After college Berkeley returned to Gainesville. Gar talked of opening a beer t-shirt shop, where they could sell clever beer tees and unique beers. That was the beginning of Stubbies and Steins, which opened in April 2003. In 2008, they expanded, and their authentic German sausages became a part of “menu”. At its peak, they had over 24 beers on tap and over 750 bottled beers. No breweries were open yet in Gainesville, only through distributors could Berkeley and Gar find the world and western US beers their patrons loved. In 2013 Berkeley’s beloved father Gar passed away. And Berkeley found out she had celiac disease. Berkeley could no longer enjoy the beers that she and her dad had spent years bringing to Gainesville. It was time for a change and in 2014 Stubbies and Steins closed their doors. But the connection to Gainesville and the beer community never was broken. Over the next few years Berkeley continued to cook and sell her German sausages and Stubbies Sausages was born. Where can you find Berkeley, a local realtor at Watson Realty Corp? Many nights and weekends she is at a local brewery with her sausage cart, continuing to make new friends and bringing people together, like she and her dad had always wanted, through food and beverage.

Thornebrook Gallery & David Arrighi LOVING WHAT I DO

After 41 years on January 31st, 2023, Thornebrook Gallery will be closing its doors. And while David’s amazing framing business and gallery filled with new and eclectic art will be greatly missed in our community, David will not be completely getting out of the art and gallery business. David will still be representing artists and provide professional services, through the Thornebrook Gallery website. How did Thornebrook Gallery come to be? In 1981 what would become Thornebrook Gallery opened. It was just 3 weeks after graduation from the University of Florida and David and Art Frank, his partner, opened Frame Crafters. Frame Crafters was in the Millhopper Shopping Center, just across 16th Avenue from the current location. The framing business thrived. But something was missing.

David and Art wanted to expand their frame shop and also add an Art Gallery. So in 1985, when the Shoppes of Thornebrook development began, David and Art leaped at the opportunity to do both and Thornebrook Gallery was born. Since 1985 they have added an additional 1,000 square feet to Thornebrook Gallery, opened a second location in Ponte Vedra from 2000-2005 and Art retired from the business. Now it is time for David and his wife to do some traveling. While David is excited about the chance to travel and still work with his friends and artists through the Thornebrook Gallery website, he is going to deeply miss his work family. Colleen Murray, the framer at Thornebrook Gallery is the most amazing framer David has ever met. Colleen has been with David for over 37 years. Her wealth of knowledge of all areas of framing and incredible skills has meant the world to the Gallery. David expressed that “Many of our customers have such a close relationship with Colleen that when they come in, she is the one they want to talk to.” “Chitra Pekala pretty much runs the gallery, she does most of the display work and works with customers as well as helping select the crafts we bring into the gallery.” Chitra has been with David for 6 years now. A prior resident of Baltimore, Chitra ran one of the three locations of "As Kindred Spirits", a very fine gallery there. Martha Jane Friedrich was among David's very first customers in the early 80's. Martha and her husband have done a lot of framing with David and earlier this year when David needed sales help, Martha Jane jumped at the chance to become a part of the Thornebrook Gallery work family. David says, “She is a people person and makes folks feel relaxed and really enjoy their visit to the gallery with no pressure.” David LOVES what he does.
