ESTATE PLANNING (WILLS & TRUSTS)

Our attorneys create customized estate plans based on your family structure, life plans, goals, values, principles, and vision. There is no such thing as one-size-fits-all estate planning.

PROBATE

The probate process helps to ensure that your deceased loved one’s estate is distributed according to their wishes. Mourning the loss of a loved one is difficult, and the thought of dealing with legal issues and piles of paperwork can make you feel overwhelmed.

GUARDIANSHIP & SPECIAL NEEDS

Appointing a guardian is necessary when a person can no longer make or communicate safe or sound decisions about his/her person and/or property or has become susceptible to fraud or undue influence. A special needs trust allows a person with a disability to have money put aside for their care.

TRUST ADMINISTRATION

Trust administration includes settling any debts, paying taxes, transferring property titles and other administrative tasks that must be handled to close out or settle the estate of the decedent.

ASSET PROTECTION

Asset protection planning involves making prudent decisions today to protect yourself, your business, and your hard-earned assets from loss due to lawsuits, creditors or bankruptcies.

BUSINESS PLANNING

An effective business plan is not only a roadmap that outlines your goals, strategies, and potential hurdles, but also helps protect your business from death, divorce, or disability by preparing in advance.

FRISCO HOLIDAY FLAGS LEASE PROGRAM BENEFITS FRISCO EDUCATION FOUNDATION

Frisco area homeowners and business leaders can display their best red, white and blue for prime patriotic observances through the Frisco Holiday Flags lease program. More than 1,700 Frisco participants already are doing so.  Bill Baxter, who heads this flag program, says for $75 per year subscribers can receive American flags for five holidays: Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Patriot Day and Veteran's Day.

A portion of the flag leasing contributions benefits Frisco Education Foundation, an organization that provides finances for Frisco Independent School District educational programs, student scholarships and grants for FISD innovative educators.

The American flag has flown as the U.S. national emblem in some form without interruption since 1777. The flag's 13 red and white stripes represent the 13 original colonies. Its 50 white stars on a blue background represent the 50 states.

Regional Boy Scouts troop members and youth partners deliver, set and pick up the leased flags. Scouts are compensated for flag delivery, which strengthens community bonds and encourages respect and responsibility among Scouts.

"When you secure a flag, you're helping our youth as well," says Bill, adding he's actively seeking Girl Scouts troops to also participate.

He explains when someone leases a flag, a PVC sleeve is installed in the ground near a front curb of the subscriber's property. No brackets or fixtures are attached to homes, he adds. "On each of the holidays, a 3x5-foot U.S. flag mounted on a 10-foot metal pole is placed in the sleeve."

Damaged flags in need of replacement are removed from the poles and set aside for appropriate retirement. Bill says a meaningful flag retirement ceremony led by Scouts is conducted at least once a year.

"This Frisco flag program is one of the largest in the Metroplex," says Bill. "We're grateful to be able

“No other symbol captures power and glory of the United States like the American flag.”

to help others with this type of sacred honor and commemoration, while showing respect and patriotism for America and all our military veterans."

Exploring Multifunctional Backyards

DFW Fence Pro: Creating Beautiful And Functional Outdoor Living Spaces

A backyard is more than just a space; it’s an extension of a home. Converting an outdoor area into a multifunctional space is ideal for relaxation, entertainment, or dining, no matter the weather. Beyond just elevating a day-to-day living experience, an outdoor living area also boosts the property’s value, making it a smart investment for the future. The DFW Fence Pro team specializes in custom fencing and outdoor structures in the DFW area, designing attractive and functional outdoor living areas.

“DFW Fence Pro isn’t just about fences,” says Blake Luby, owner of DFW Fence Pro. “We are a onestop shop for elevating any outdoor space.”

DFW Fence Pro has been serving the DFW area since 2013. With more than a decade of experience, Blake says they've built a reputation for excellence in crafting custom wood fences, iron fences, pergolas and custom patio covers.

“We are committed to quality craftsmanship, integrity and customer satisfaction,” states Blake.  “Choosing DFW Fence Pro means selecting top-quality design, materials and service to bring outdoor dreams to life.”

DFW Fence Pro offers comprehensive residential and commercial fencing services, including installation and repair of cedar, pine, spruce, wrought iron, chain link fences and custom gates. Its expertise extends to crafting elegant iron fences, adding a touch of sophistication and durability to any outdoor space. A fence is not just a barrier. It extends the living space, adds privacy, enhances beauty and security, and sets the tone for the yard. With so much depending on a fence design, choosing the right custom wood option can be daunting. Blake emphasizes that DFW Fence Pro is committed to guiding customers through the decision-making process, ensuring they find the perfect fence to meet their needs and complement their home’s style.

“We are committed to quality craftsmanship, integrity and customer satisfaction.”

Blake says he and his team are passionate about creating top-tier outdoor living experiences. Going beyond mere practicality, Blake aims to craft outdoor settings that surpass clients' expectations, enhancing their enjoyment and satisfaction with their outdoor spaces.

Pergolas not only provide shade and shelter but also enhance the look of a backyard or garden. DFW Fence Pro team members design custom patio covers that combine functionality and style to create cozy outdoor living spaces. Decks are perfect for uneven ground, providing a flat outdoor space with beautiful views. They offer year-round usability, including colder seasons, with the option to incorporate heaters and fire pits. Decks present a simpler installation process compared to patios, making them a favorable choice for areas with minimal grading requirements.

An outdoor kitchen can be a perfect addition to any home, especially in North Texas with its mild winters. It allows outdoor cooking nearly year-round, enhancing the backyard living space. Cooking meals outside keeps the mess and smells away from the indoor kitchen. It also expands the entertaining space for hosting gatherings. With lighting, heaters and fans, the outdoor kitchen can be used in various weather conditions. Investing in an outdoor kitchen upgrades a home's living area and encourages outdoor relaxation.

DFW Fence Pro also specializes in pouring concrete for patio covers, sheds, and other structures, offering stamped concrete options that mimic high-end materials at a lower cost. Customers can choose from a variety of patterns and colors to create a personalized outdoor space tailored to their preferences.

Blake says DFW Fence Pro believes in a personalized approach to every project. “Whether you prefer a classic, modern or eclectic style, our team works closely with every customer to create an outdoor area that reflects their taste and lifestyle.”

Going For It

Frisco Resident Publishes New Book Regarding Celebrity Paths To Fame

As a local creative professional, Paul Salfen is a self-professed serial entrepreneur in the media industry, having started or built up several outlets. He's part TV host, producer, editor, writer and consultant. He co-hosted Drew Pearson Live, co-hosted The ANE Show on iHeartMedia, and is managing editor for AMFM Magazine He spent the past 15 years interviewing a variety of the well-known, popular stars in film and music, including celebrities such as Tom Cruise, Hugh Jackman, Harrison Ford, Beyoncé, Tyler Perry, Angelina Jolie, Will Smith, Willie Nelson, Ozzy Osbourne, Tiesto, Metallica and Sandra Bullock. He also produced a series of sports, travel and business articles, including features on luminaries like Sir Richard Branson.

Paul's new book, Going For It, begins to harness cosmic tidbits that he's gleaned from those interviews regarding drive and determination on different people's paths to success and fame. Frisco magazine asked Paul about the book just as it about to be officially released.

“Growing up, I thought everyone who was rich and famous had it easy, and they had some sort of leg up on everyone else. Then you come to find out that many of them struggled, and through grit and determination, they made it. The stories have inspired me, and I know they will inspire others.”

AS A FRISCO RESIDENT, HOW DID THE REGION OR LOCAL CULTURE INFLUENCE YOUR BOOK?

“I’d lived in downtown Dallas for years. I had to get out and move north like many have to avoid the noise and trappings of city life, so being in the Frisco area brought a new perspective and a calm I needed to really focus and finish the book. I needed to; I’d been working on it for years.”

WHAT'S THE BOOK ABOUT IN ESSENCE?

“It's a collection of the greatest quotes and stories from doing 20-plus years of interviews with the biggest and brightest stars in the world and it's meant to inspire. The book is broken up into three sections: advice, wisdom and Hail Mary Moments. The 'Hail Mary moment' question comes from working with Drew Pearson, my co-host and legendary Dallas Cowboys player

who went into the Hall of Fame, and will always be remembered for catching the original Hail Mary. He was also gracious enough to write the foreword of the book.”

HOW DO THE BOOK'S STORIES ABOUT WISDOM AND ENCOURAGEMENT INSPIRE OTHERS?

“This is the book I wish I had as a kid. Growing up, I thought everyone who was rich and famous had it easy, and they had some sort of leg up on everyone else. Then you come to find out that many of them struggled, and through grit and determination, they made it. The stories have inspired me, and I know they will inspire others.”

OVER TIME, YOU'VE HEARD MANY TALES FROM VARIOUS STANDOUT PEOPLE/PERSONALITIES -- WHAT WOULD YOU SAY ARE THE ONE OR TWO MAIN LESSONS THAT IMPRESSED OR INFLUENCED YOU MOST?

“If Tom Cruise needed the money, he could teach classes on how to handle people. His eye contact, name recall, attention to detail, friendliness to everyone, and over-the-top care for people that support him should be taught in schools. Really. Then I’d pick up bits and pieces from everyone, but I'd say seeing Sir Richard Branson in action and learning that handling too much is too much and you need the best team to delegate to was something I took to heart.”

Drew Pearson Live crew / Photo by Phillip Slaughter

HOW MUCH OF THE BOOK IS DEVOTED TO YOUR OWN JOURNEY AND LIFE EXPERIENCES?

“Funny enough, I actually had an entire long story in the beginning that shared my journey of starting in high school, doing it on my own in college, and figuring everything out via trial and error, but I decided I wanted to go right into the good stuff that people really wanted. If they want to know my story later, I've got it ready for them.”

YOU ALREADY HAVE A SECOND BOOK VOLUME PLANNED. WHEN IS IT SCHEDULED TO BE PUBLISHED?

“Well, I suppose that depends on how this [book] one does. The second book is done and turned in and hopefully the message of this one

will cause a demand. I'll be ready to go quickly rather than make people wait. But we'll see. It's looking good, though, if pre-sales are any indication. Just feeling blessed that you can find it online via Walmart, Target, Amazon and Barnes & Noble - and it's being considered as a textbook. I didn't see that coming!”

AND A THIRD BOOK PART?

“I'm hard at work on it! This one is going to be the biggest one yet. I just keep going and going and keep making it to more and more interesting people. In fact, I'm doing eight interviews today, four of which are incredibly big people. I think also when people see what I'm doing and they see that their good words will live on this way, it will just keep going and going.”

ABUNDANT LIFE THROUGH THREE PS FOR RANCHERS WITH INTELLECTUAL AND DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES

REDISCOVER CORNERSTONE RANCH

People. Place. Purpose. This exact path and combination for empowering adults with special needs to live abundant lives is thriving at Cornerstone Ranch, a sanctuary that provides compassion, service and education.

volunteers weekly at local nonprofits); developing life skills (to reach highest level of independence via grocery shopping, home care, meal preparation and personal grooming); healthy living (through balanced diets, daily exercise

“PROVIDING LIFELONG, ENRICHING CARE WITH UNIQUE PURPOSES.”

Cornerstone Ranch founders David and Cynthia Heaton say they first began to think about creating a place such as the ranch during 1999 when they realized special needs youths lacked a stepping stone into independent living after high school. In 2004, the Heatons purchased 42 peaceful acres of land outside McKinney, and they built a 10,000-square foot ranch home for this nonprofit purpose. In 2006, the first Cornerstone residents moved in. During 2011, the group added a non-residential day program that now serves 50-plus adults with special needs.

Presently, 'Ranchers' at 3933 CR 317 improve various levels of personal growth and find joy as they find their life's purpose through new opportunities, activities and support.

"Cornerstone Ranch has a unique, faith-based approach to family style living that fosters safe and nurturing relationships, and a lifelong home for our Ranchers," says Cynthia Heaton, executive director.

Cynthia explains that the group's six programming pillars are: serving (each resident and day program participant

and sports); learning (classes to further develop math, reading, health management skills, plus daily devotionals and Bible studies); working (developing vocational skills and working in various enterprises, including making candles and homemade jam); and having fun through organized and impromptu activities.

Robin Vestal, Cornerstone Ranch development director, notes that with the program, community engagement isn't just an activity; "it's a cornerstone of our mission."

She says Ranchers not only find a nurturing community there, they also actively contribute to the larger neighborhood. "This year, the Ranchers' dedication was recognized when they were honored as the 2024 Volunteer Group of the Year by Volunteer McKinney.  Through initiatives like serving at Samaritan Inn and delivering Meals on Wheels, our Ranchers demonstrate the powerful impact we can all make by serving others. Their unwavering commitment not only enriches their lives but also strengthens the entire community, showcasing the profound impact of service and connection."

To get involved at the ranch, tours can be requested. The staff is always looking for great volunteers to help serve alongside residents  or on the property, says Charlotte DeRuyter, volunteer coordinator.

Additionally, passionate individuals are sought to join the Ranch's professional team. "If you have a heart for service and a desire to contribute to a thriving community, here, every staff member plays a pivotal role in nurturing the potential of each Rancher, making every day a chance to change lives for the better," Cynthia explains.

Organizations, such as the City of Frisco, City of McKinney, Citizen's Church, Stonebriar Church, The Parks Church, Breckenridge Village, Brookwood Community, Hugs Cafe & Greenhouse, ManeGait, McKinney Special Olympics, My Possibilities and The Nathaniel Foundation, serve or have served as supportive partners.

Business and corporate partners include entities such as Craig International, Eversource Wealth Advisors, HEB, Insperity, Simpson Strong-Tie, Wells Group and Titan Consulting.

Kirt Ruby, chair of the Cornerstone Ranch board of directors and senior product manager of Interstate Battery, says: "Cornerstone Ranch offers more than just support; it provides a loving environment where individuals are cherished, connections deepen and personal growth flourishes. This is why supporting our cause is not just an investment in a place, but in a vibrant future where every person discovers their true potential."

"GOD

HAS CRAFTED EACH OF OUR CORNERSTONE RANCHERS UNIQUELY AND WONDERFULLY."

To assist with the ranch's objectives,  Alexis Moore, the group's development coordinator, says those interested can provide one-time or recurring gifts. "There also are other ways to make an impact and change the lives of our Ranchers through donor advised gifts, stocks, bonds, mutual funds, corporate matching, legacy giving and IRA qualified giving."

This year's Cornerstone Ranch Barn Bash, an event to raise awareness of the special needs community, is slated for Nov. 2. The event is scheduled to have gourmet food trucks, live music, a petting zoo, hayrides and bounce houses. Tickets will be available online or at the event.

Purple Heart Post

Frisco VFW Post 8273 Designated With Prestigious Honor Of Most Solemn Distinction

Frisco VFW Post 8273 was designated as a Purple Heart Post by a delegation from the Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 542 of Dallas. This award recognizes the Post’s contributions to the community and support for local veterans.

“It was important to Frisco VFW Post 8273 members that we recognize our combat wounded veterans with this designation. While our programs support every veteran regardless of combat service status, the VFW is comprised of veterans who've served in wars overseas, and some of our members were wounded in action in this service,” says Greg Obar, junior vice commander of the Post, and himself a Purple Heart recipient.

The Purple Heart Medal, one of the nation’s oldest awards, is presented to service members who've been injured or killed due to enemy action while serving in the U.S. military. A Purple Heart is a solemn

distinction reflecting a person's sacrifices while in the line of duty.

Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 542 is more than 200 members strong, comprised of Purple Heart recipients in North Texas. They're active throughout the year with activities and fundraising drives with one goal: serving fellow veterans.

The National Purple Heart Hall of Honor estimated that more than 1.8 million servicemen and servicewomen have been awarded the Purple Heart. It began as the Badge of Military Merit, established by George Washington on Aug. 7, 1782.

Since 1968, Frisco Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 8273, a nonprofit organization, has been providing unique and urgently needed services that improve the lives of veterans, military personnel and their families all the while supporting positive citizen involvement for the betterment of Frisco and surrounding communities.
