Nestled in the Texas Hill Country, northwest of San Antonio, is a perfect place for a golfing weekend getaway at one of the best Hill Country Resorts - Tapatio Springs Hill Country Resort. Traveling on the winding road through the hills to the resort from Boerne and Interstate 10, you appreciate the magnificence and peacefulness of the Hill Country. When you coast down the last hill you'll spot the sparkling lake on the right spilling over the road and into a lake on the left, the towering limestone cliff with a huge beautiful home sitting on top, the Tapatio Springs sign with a waterfall, the lush green fairways of the golf course, and some of tallest hills in Texas dotted with nice homes, you'll get a sense that you are in for a special treat. The resort sits in a valley surrounded by rolling hills and incorporates the best that Mother Nature has to offer including a variety of trees, wildflowers, axis and whitetail deer, rolling tree lined hills with deep valleys, limestone cliffs rising out of springs and lakes, and panoramic views from the towering cliffs. To be clear, they are only Texas hills but they are some of the tallest in the area and rise to 1900 feet. Plus you get to enjoy consistently perfect weather with an average annual high of 68 degrees which creates excellent conditions for year round golf and other activities. During the summer, the higher elevation is an average of 12 degrees cooler than San Antonio. Perfect for being outside. The resort has a variety of accommodations for guests including suites and hill country guest rooms. Each guest room is larger than the typical hotel room and has a flat screen TV, seating area and desk, coffee maker, hair dryer and iron, and upgraded bath amenities including two sinks and lots of counter space. Best of all each room has a very comfortable king or double queen bed and either a private balcony or patio - an excellent spot to relax with a morning cup of coffee and enjoy the view of the golf course, deer, beautiful hills, or take in a spectacular Hill Country sunrise or sunset. One of the primary reasons to keep coming back to Tapatio Springs Hill Country Resort is to play golf on 18 of the best holes in Texas. Each nine is unique and different and will test your accuracy and course management skills with a combination of tight landing zones, water features, elevation changes, forced carries, and challenging doglegs. But don't let that scare you away - the course is fair and there are four sets of tee boxes plus a combo on the scorecard. Not only is the layout challenging but it is very scenic with rolling hills, waterfalls, colorful flowers, sparkling ponds, CONTINUED >

beautiful homes scattered along the hillsides, and towering trees. The front nine plays through the valley with water coming into play on six holes and it's a enjoyable par 35. The back nine plays up and along the ridge line of the rolling hills and then back to the valley. This nine is a blast to play with elevation changes, doglegs, forced carries, and some fun holes. After, or even before, 18 holes of golf I'm ready to eat and The La Cascada Restaurant which adjoins the pro shop is perfect with it's spectacular views of the cliff-top mansions, golf course, a water fall, and lakes from the floor-to-ceiling windows. You can eat in the nicely appointed dining room, in the bar area, or on the really cool outdoor patio. On Friday and Saturday you can enjoy live music on the patio. La Cascada serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner and a wide selection of choices plus Happy Hour and specialty drinks. We enjoyed just about everything from the breakfast, lunch and dinner menus. Literally waddling away from our completely cleared plates obviously impressed with the food. After golfing, bike riding, and hiking most of us are ready for a spa treatment at Puresol Salt Cave & Spa which is in the center of the guest rooms and next to the pool and fitness center. Guests have the option to enjoy the likes of a "Deep Tissue Sports Massage" that "relieves aches and pains that are stored in the deepest part of the muscles" and/or select a HydraFacial Treatment (a new breakthrough in skin resurfacing technology) at Puresol Spa. I'm told by a reliable source that the facial is relaxing, soothing, and very refreshing. We spent forty relaxing and refreshing minutes in the salt rock cave, what? Puresol Salt Cave Spa is the only spa in the country with an authentic, therapeutic salt cave where guests relax on a spa 14

lounger while being surrounded by soothing music, and literally emerge not only more relaxed and tension-free, but healthier as well. I fell asleep during most of my forty minutes. After the salt rock cave I felt like a new man - relaxed, and ready to go for, well, another nap. There is a lot to do at Tapatio Springs Resort and the weather is perfect most of the year and some of the amenities you can enjoy include: an adults pool with a waterfall, hot tub, and relaxing pool furniture, a fitness center loaded with fitness equipment, miles of hiking, and biking trails around lakes and creeks and up and down the hills with some stunning scenery, horseshoe pits and bean bag toss, fire rings for s'mores and the resort pool with a bar, more fire pits, cabanas, a kids slide, and comfortable pool furniture. Tapatio Springs Resort can also schedule special events and activities like horseback riding, wine tasking, antique shopping, kayaking, tubing, or birding and more. Speaking of horseback riding, we had an extraordinary adventure with a geniune gentleman cowboy. The four of us were privileged to have bronco buster retired Willie Stricker lead us through the hill country on his former through-bred race horses. They were well cared for and simply beautiful animals. As a true Texas legend, you know by the casual and confident drawl, Willie shared his Christian faith with us in a number of colorful stories from the past of his cowboy life. I highly recommend calling Willie and experiencing real Texas Hill Country hospitality on horseback in the rolling hills. You will not be disappointed, although you will need to pay attention and watch your lip. Call him on his cowboy flip-phone at 210-508-9349 and tell him Frisco Tim sez "howdy!"

t goes without saying that Emmitt Smith had success on the football field, making him one of the legends of the game. Holding the record of the most rushing yards in NFL history tends to stay with you, both on and off the field. If you spend even five minutes with Emmitt, you will quickly learn (as I did) that he is so much more than a National Hall of Fame Football star. He’s a mentor, a businessman, and most importantly, a CONTINUED > devoted husband and father. Emmitt Smith at The Gents Place

EMMITT SMITH (CON TI N U ED)

After hanging up his cleats, Emmitt transitioned to commercial real estate and development, establishing his continually growing portfolio companies. He said he became interested in the real estate industry after beginning to invest in land developments in Florida. He saw for himself how these investments began to grow into profits and became intrigued. He saw the opportunities this industry possessed and as the cash flow grew, he started to ask more questions and later leveraged himself within the commercial real estate space. Even though Emmitt may have transitioned from the gridiron, it doesn’t mean he doesn’t take the lessons and discipline’s he learned with him into the business world he’s now immersed in. In fact, Emmitt shared with me that there are definite analogies one could use between the two. He said as a football player he studied the playbook, the opposing team and even his own team, both offense and defense, in order to really understand all that

is going on. And just like in football, with his business, he studies the potential business opportunities (retail spaces opening up), his competitors and his entire team and industry. Organizational structure, he believes, begins with a vision, working hard, staying humble as you continue to strive for more and work well with others to have the entire business become the best that it can be. Emmitt credits his recently departed mother and God for being the driving forces responsible for guiding him through his life. He said “God’s grace and mercy has carried me through each facet of my life.” This undoubtedly explains where Emmitt’s ongoing philanthropic heart comes from. Emmitt and his wife of seventeen years, Pat Smith merged their passion for giving back to create The Pat & Emmitt Smith Charities, which they both manage. Now in its eighth year, Pat & Emmitt Smith Charities include transformational programs such as TEAM 22 – a

select group of children who receive hands-on mentoring from Pat & Emmitt. These kids are given opportunities to experience things such as summer camps and other special outings they otherwise wouldn’t have access to. Whether it is a visit to Washington D.C. to meet presidents’ George W. Bush and Barack Obama, or mentoring sessions with professionals in the workforce to help guide them in a success driven direction after school. The Smith’s believe exposure leads to inspiration. In addition to TEAM 22, Pat & Emmitt Smith Charities has impacted over 130,000 underserved children in North Texas and written over 140 grants to other charity organizations. “Never forget where you came from.” is a statement from Emmitt's mother that he carries with him every day. And just like his mother who was always present to offer advice and to be a positive example throughout his life, Emmitt works at being the best for his own children. He is a devoted father who tries to make sure that his own children understand that their lives started, as he put it, on “3rd base.” He wants each of his kids to understand that they have been fortunate to have opportunities that both he and their mother did not have. “I encourage my kids to broaden their perspectives on life and realize not everyone is as fortunate; some people had to start at first base, some the dugout,” stated Emmitt. He manages to do this by creating an environment that cultivates open communication, he encourages hard work and he and Pat have them involved in their charities that help other kids their age to garner further world perspectives. He has them practice mental toughness and tells them to always live in a way that you don’t forget to give to others in need. “I don’t want them to go through life with blinders on, insensitive to the needs of others and their responsibility even as kids to help others whenever they can. The woman that captured Emmitt’s heart many years ago, was the beautiful and ever successful, Pat Smith.

When I asked him to talk about his role as a husband, he said. “It’s all about first and foremost taking care of my family. Another aspect is for me to honor, respect, and encourage my wife to seek after her dreams and aspirations. I will be her biggest supporter.” He makes sure that she doesn’t get the feeling of the notion that this is a “man’s world.” In fact, Emmitt mentioned that women inspire him because they are able to continue to involve themselves, all the while many times, making personal sacrifices to do so. He said that he believes that women, internally, are a lot stronger than men. “I look for the positive things in life, otherwise you get lost in the negative.” Emmitt said this is one of the first pieces of advice he offers to people asking for direction in business, in sports and in life. He believes that a number of things through his journey, with the help of God’s grace, pushed him to his destiny. He finds incredible enjoyment in what he does as a real estate businessman as he did crossing that red zone over and over…and over again. He doesn’t look at his career as “work,” it’s a passion. “Football helped me realize that the decisions I make have an effect on more than just me; it’s a team effort. He extends this line of thinking in his business portfolio. He lives his life in a way where he is cognizant to live in a humble manner. He gives back to others when there’s a need. He stated he treats everyone with the same amount of respect, no matter who you are. He stated, "You never know where life will take you. Be careful how you treat people. You may meet the same people on your way down that you met at the top. It’s all about keeping that perspective; don’t live with blinders on." It’s always a great feeling when there are world class athletes who you meet and they are charming, humble, charismatic and just plain kind. I certainly left with that impression of Emmitt. In fact, the analogy I would use comes from the quote, “Live in such a way that if anyone had anything bad to say about you, that no one would believe them.”

Emmitt Helping Team 22 Kids Shop for Uniforms

“ YOU NE VER KNOW WHERE LIFE WILL TAKE YOU. BE CAREFUL HOW YOU TRE AT PEOPLE. YOU MAY MEET THE SAME PEOPLE ON YOUR WAY DOWN THAT YOU MET AT THE TOP. IT’S ALL ABOUT KEEPING THAT PERSPECTIVE; DON’T LIVE WITH BLINDERS ON.”

– That’s Emmitt Smith. A Man of God, A Father, A Husband, A Philanthropist, An NFL All-Time Rusher and a complete Southern Gentleman...way beyond the goal line.

his father, Chris always had an ongoing interest with food. Although he had a family background in the food industry, in the 1980’s Chris decided to get into the IT field. He enjoyed his work, however there was just something always missing for him. After some serious soul searching, Chris realized he wanted to work with his hands but also be around people. This is when he decided to pursue a culinary program. In The Kitchen After graduation, Chris stayed in Switzerland for two and a half years in order to gain experience and refine his cooking skills. He took jobs in various Swiss hotels where he learned the French cooking style. He mentioned that was the time he was around some of the most delicate food items he’d known. In 1990, Chris moved back to Dallas to apply what he had learned from his long stay in Switzerland. Chris learned more culinary tricks from famous Dallas chefs such as Stephen Pyles and Kent Rathbun. He later landed a position as lead caterer for the executive room in the Dallas Marriott Hotel. After that he moved on to be the lead caterer for five years for the J.C. Penney Headquarters in Plano, TX. During around the mid-1990’s, Chris and his wife, who also worked in the restaurant industry, decided it was time to put down some roots and they chose Frisco, Texas as their destination. They both saw the potential growth that Frisco had, but "little did they know, how much growth!” as Chris stated. Shortly after moving to Frisco, Chris became aware of the opportunity to buy a restaurant that was up for bid. This, of course, was III Forks. He has been Executive Chef and General Manager for over eighteen and a half years now. III Forks not only has a myriad of delicious menu choices, they also help a number of local charities and are committed to giving back to the community. For over thirteen years, III Forks has been involved with various golf tournaments to help with cancer research for people like Connor Cruz. Connor was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma in 2008. III Forks has provided means to raise funds to the family for Connor’s Wish Foundation for years. Chris has always tried to remain a part of the Frisco community and give where he can. Any free time he has away from the restaurant is given to his family. If you're looking for some fine cuisine and a wonderful dining experience under the direction of managers such as Chris, be sure to check out III Forks.

DOUG BOX ARTICLE KRISTI ANDERSON

LESSONS ON THE RANCH

Frisco Life | June 2017

f you live here in Frisco and take a drive down Main Street and Preston Road, you will run into the fifty-five hundred acre beautiful plot of land today known as Brinkman Ranch. This ranch has a story; and a lot of lessons as told by Doug Box. Before it was coined Brinkman Ranch, it was known as the Box Ranch, owned by Cloyce Box. Cloyce having making his climb to the top, with the help of his successful career in the NFL with the Detroit Lions, began to meet people and start relationships that led him into areas such as construction, cement manufacturing and finally the good ole’ Texas oil business. His football career had indeed helped open those doors for him. For many decades, the Box family comprised of Cloyce, his wife and their four boys.

One of the boys, Doug Box, has written several books about his families’ legacy. In his widely popular book, Cutter Frisco, he describes the Box family mansion and all that transpired there. There were endless days of working on the farm with cattle, horses, hogs and the like. His family lived the quintessential Texas rich lifestyle. Doug explained there were parties held that included diverse groups of people coming over to enjoy the festivities. From U.S. Olympians, ex-football stars to movie celebrities, the list goes on. The ranch was the place to be “seen.” Although Doug enjoyed his time on the Box Ranch, there came a time when he became, simply, worn out. Worn out with the farm work, worn out with the damage the sun had done to his skin. He even battled

with removing forms of skin cancer that came from the endless hours of farm work under the hot Texas sun. Right after graduating high school, Doug put his foot down…this time on the gas pedal. He found another job working as a dishwasher at a local golf club in the city. In 1987, the stock market crashed and had an economic impact on all of the businesses, including Doug's Father’s oil business. In the middle of that same year, sadly, Cloyce Box suffered a sudden heart attack that came on very unexpectedly. Just like with any family, the decisions of how assets would be divided came into play. Doug explained that this created a tumultuous series of events for he and his three other brothers. Some of the brothers wanted to keep the ranch; others wanted to sell it to a buyer at the time. Some wanted to continue working and tending to the ranch, and others (such as Doug) didn’t have interest in going back to farm life. It was a difficult and frustrating time, to say the least. They went back and forth and finally ended up deciding to sue one another and went in front of a Federal judge who ended up forcing them to sell the ranch and unfortunately, due to the economic times, it sold for pennies on the dollar. It still divided the fortune up for each brother to have their own independent wealth; it could have been a lot more had they taken the time to really plan the transition out.

“You learn more from your mistakes and failures than you do from your successes.”

This is what led Doug to becoming a Family Business Advisor. If there is one piece of advice Doug tells just about everyone, including his current daughters today, it is to not join the family business right away. He believes it’s important to gain a broader perspective on business, wealth and life in general. Once you graduate college, get away for a few years, get a job, live in the real world where there are real bosses and you see the bigger picture of things. This will ensure that you don’t take things for granted so much. It will allow you to see the importance of family away from family business. Doug’s latest book, The Texas Patriarch describes his Father’s rise from poverty to building an empire and then having it come crashing down. He said it could be described as a depressing story, but Doug would like it to be looked at as a valuable lesson. He coins it as, “A Texas version of Forrest Gump.” When I asked Doug what was one of the lessons his father gave to him, he told me Cloyce would say, “You learn more from your mistakes and failures than you do from your successes.” Well said, Mr. Box.
