Here's To Home & Design
Home. So much contained in that little four letter word. Home is our grounding. Our base. Our launchpad. It’s where we start and end each day. And while the particulars look different for each of us, the meaning and value it holds for all of us is undeniable.
Author Wendy Wunder stated: “The magic thing about home is that it feels good to leave, and it feels even better to come back.”
As we thought about home, we wanted to highlight what makes it special to you, the readers. As you flip through the pages of this edition, we hope you’ll feel encouraged and connected to the people around you, and most all of your home.
Every month, we hear from readers who keep this magazine for longer than just the month labeled on the cover. They say they hold onto it for months as coffee table art or an accessory in their home. We feel proud to create a resource that is valued in our community and strive every month to deliver the value you expect. Thanks for letting us be a part of your home.
Happy March!

ADORING OUTDOOR AREAS MCM Licensed Contractor Improves Families Lives Through Outside Living Spaces ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY MCM OUTDOOR LIVING | HOME + DESIGN 12
Enabling homeowners to enjoy more precious moments with their families and friends in unique, luxurious outdoor spaces is the every day mission of the McKinley Construction Management team.
MCM founder Cody McKinley says he and his team have been creating stunning outdoor spaces with turnkey services for homeowners for the past five years throughout Collin and Dallas counties, as well as Greater North Texas.
"Our passion for finely crafted woodwork inspires us to turn ordinary backyards into perfect places for making memories and unforgettable gatherings," Cody explains. "At MCM, we don't just build outdoor spaces, we create breathtaking experiences."
Among the projects they handle are landscape design and buildouts, outside kitchens, outdoor living spaces, pools, decks, paver patios, irrigation systems, sodding, driveway installations, sunrooms and home additions. Cody says they can set up outdoor lighting and sound systems around pools or patios, too.
Additionally, the MCM staff provides outdoor furniture through a high-end custom collection,

complete with tables, lounge chairs and umbrellas composed of sunand weather-resistant fabrics, backed by industry-leading warranties.
"We believe it's our privilege to redesign our customers' outdoors. No matter how simple or complex someone's project is, we’ll help them turn it into beautiful reality and give them the private retreat they deserve. And we like being part of their journeys about recapturing happy moments along the way," assures Cody.
MCM was founded by Cody McKinley in 2015. He says he inherited part of his talent from his father, who also was a contractor passionate about hand-built creations. Cody's dependable and creative business partner also is his brother-in-law, Chris Weaks.
A hassle-free process is what the MCM team promises. That straightforward process basically boils down to a handful of helpful steps: Customers share their vision with the team, who provides ballpark pricing and schedules an in-home consultation. A project consultant or outdoor designer discusses with customers what they want to achieve with new outdoor spaces, the atmosphere they hope to create, and the features they'd like to have. Then a project timeline and budget is outlined. The next step entails an MCM designer creating a detailed 3D rendering of the outdoor area to help customers visualize their dream space, this includes the layout, materials and colors. After a design is approved, the MCM team builds out the space, while staying in contact with customers throughout the process to address questions.

"Whether it’s playing a game, enjoying barbeque, or catching up with friends, we're here to help customers with outdoor living spaces that improve their family’s lives," says Cody McKinley, owner, McKinley Construction Management.
15 MARCH 2024 | CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/FRISCO
"Although we work year-round, it's best to sign up for projects at least a season before you really want the project completed," Cody suggests.
Cody says his team is licensed, trained and certified. Additionally MCM offers several financing options and payment arrangements.
Within the community, MCM supports The Colony High School sports leagues, especially football and basketball. They are active in Rock Creek Church in Prosper, and are members of the Frisco Chamber of Commerce.
"We're also proud of our A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau, and 85 5-Star reviews from customers," he adds.

Daystar Landscapes Celebrates 40 Years

“"The roots of our business have always been our people."
Beautiful outdoor transformations: Since 1984, Daystar Landscapes, Inc., professionals have provided landscape design and installations throughout North Texas. The Prosper-headquartered team specializes in landscape design and installation services for new homes, multifamily developments, residential renovation, commercial landscape design and commercial grounds maintenance services.
"Actually, our family of landscapers look at it as being able to create memorable outdoor experiences for customers," says Jeff Canfield, founder/owner of Daystar Landscapes, Inc.
While proudly observing the company's 40th anniversary during 2024, Jeff reflects on its humble beginning.
He says, “When I first moved to Texas from Oklahoma in March 1984, I looked at what opportunities were available for business ventures. After researching the requirements and affordability of getting started, I decided to start a landscaping company. In the early days, I worked nights stocking groceries at Brookshires and found landscaping jobs during the day."
"I started Daystar Landscapes by renting a wheelbarrow and purchasing tools on a Sears credit card," he recalls.
Now, the company has 90 employees and supports the community through sponsorships, special projects and nonprofit volunteerism.
Catherine Brooks, Daystar's general manager, says a fundamental part of the company's inspiring culture is about how they make positive differences in the community, often through landscaping. In fact, she details how the company's team has assisted a variety of community nonprofits:
• Daystar is a sponsor of the Champions For Veterans initiative and Freedom program with ManeGait, a group operating a therapeutic riding center in McKinney, serving individuals with disabilities.
• Daystar is a long-term title sponsor of the Thin Blue Line Ball, an appreciation event to give back to local, selfless law enforcement families on April 6.
• Additionally, Daystar is a sponsor for the Prosper Police Department, as well as a sponsor for the Celina Police Department and that department's Drug Educational Program for school-aged children.
• Remaining actively involved in the Prosper, Frisco, McKinney and Celina chambers of commerce groups is another way Daystar supports community growth and overall progress.
• As a gold sponsor of the Community Garden Kitchen based in McKinney, Daystar helps provide food to those facing hunger and food insecurity throughout Collin County.
• Daystar gifts landscaping and other charitable contributions, along with volunteering with organizations that are so important to the local community and residents. These amazing organizations have made it their mission to “step in” where there is a loss or lack of services. Some of these organizations are The Community Garden Kitchen, Hugs Café and Greenhouse, Agape Resources, Homes for Veterans and McKinney’s Learning Garden.
• Daystar provides landscaping and some charitable contributions for Jericho Village Housing, an innovative approach to aiding people with transitional housing, support services, sustainable income stream development and other resources.
• Helping with McKinney's Learning Garden at the northwest corner of the Tupps Brewery site in east McKinney was a natural fit for Daystar. The garden features about 30 raised garden beds as well as picnic tables, potting benches and a harvest wash area. The new space also was designed to serve as an outdoor classroom for children through seniors. The garden is facilitated and maintained by volunteers,

and classes led by local chefs, farmers and gardeners. Food produced at the garden will be distributed to Community Garden Kitchen, La Tiendita, Hugs Café and East McKinney Farmers Market
• Michael E. Thornton Foundation provides financial assistance for both active and non-active duty military and families in need, and Daystar proudly supports this charitable group.
• Daystar contributes to and supports the Collin County Master Gardeners Association in the hopes of sharing and growing the education of the “next generation” in their school programs throughout Collin County.
Notably, Daystar is one of the 2024 sponsors of The Garden Show slated for March 16-17, as presented by the Collin County Master Gardeners Association. The event will be held in the Show Barn at Myers Park & Event Center in McKinney.
As North Texas continues to grow, Catherine indicates so does the demand for top-notch, reputable landscape design and installation services. "Daystar is committed to quality work and superior customer service in all aspects of our business. Our organization is a family of co-workers. We strive to accomplish the most experienced high-level service and landscape creation for our customers. This is the quality that our builders, homeowners, general contractors and maintenance clients have come to trust and depend on," she says.
"Most importantly, our company is rooted in the biblical principle that in addition to using our God-given talents in our jobs, we need to use the things we do well to bless those around us," she adds.

'Custom Handymen' Crafts Comfort, Transforms Spaces One Detail At A Time
LOCAL’S CHOICE | HOME + DESIGN 24
Whether a new homeowner or someone who's been residing in the same house for years, the need for repairs, upgrades and maintenance is an ongoing reality. As that ever-growing honey-do list becomes overwhelming, sometimes the best solution is to entrust those tasks to a professional. William Thomas, owner of Custom Handymen, is eager to offer and apply his exceptional skills in handling various household projects for a variety of clients.\ William primarily serves homeowners and property management clients. While he says he enjoys various types of work, his favorite is finished carpentry, including builtins, crown molding and coffered ceilings.
Custom trim work is a versatile design feature applicable to various areas, such as doorways, mantles, ceilings, windows and shelving units. Particularly impactful in smaller rooms, custom crown molding on the ceiling creates an illusion of spaciousness. While every home has common features like windows, doorways and ceilings, it's the thoughtful application of trim work that sets them apart. Custom crown molding adds a distinctive touch, elevating the room with its eye-catching presence. Its effectiveness lies in its ability to stand out, contributing to an enhanced sense of elegance in living spaces.
William shares that he's also skilled in masonry, appliance repair and kitchen and bathroom repair. Recently, he added children's custom carpentry, such as beds and shelving, to his offerings.
William says he firmly believes in the philosophy that "Good architecture should speak of its time and place, but yearn for timelessness," as stated by Frank Gehry. That belief serves as his guiding principle, he adds, when he takes on any job, ensuring the work he does not only meets the immediate needs of his clients but also stands the test of time in terms of design and functionality.

"THE TRIM REA LLY COMMUNICATES THEDESIGN OF A HOUSE , "
WILLIAM THO MAS, CUSTOM HANDYMENOWNER.
For homeowners, the desire to create a comfortable, visually appealing and energy-efficient home is a common aspiration. The assistance of a skilled and knowledgeable local handyman professional can make these objectives entirely achievable.
William takes pride in being a locally owned and operated business that has deep roots within the community. "My commitment to delivering exceptional service and craftsmanship has earned us a stellar reputation among homeowners in McKinney, Frisco and beyond," states William.
William says he believes his extensive experience has provided him with a profound understanding of customers' mindsets. He also believes that his expertise distinguishes him from others. Over time, the availability of skilled labor has significantly decreased, but William has been immersed in this industry since childhood. "I have the knowledge to rectify errors and deliver exceptional repairs," says William. "My experience and skill set are becoming increasingly rare to find."
As the industry has evolved, William says he has had to make adjustments to his business.
"In the past, building materials were reasonably priced, labor was readily available, and clients had disposable income," explains William. "However, there has been a significant increase in material prices, making it more expensive to obtain necessary parts and materials. Additionally, there is a shortage of skilled labor, making it more challenging to find qualified workers for construction projects."
Whether it's tasks beyond homeowners' expertise or those they'd rather avoid, William says he will tackle any job. From repairs to renovations, he assures that he is dedicated to turning any vision into a reality.

Handmade Soap
Add a spa-like feel to your home with this refreshing soap recipe that's simple to make at home.
ARTICLE BY ANGI HOCKETT | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES
lavender honey lemon soap
ingredients
• 2 lb. goat’s milk melt-and-pour soap
• 1 lemon rind, zested
• 3 tablespoons of dried lavender buds
• 2 tablespoons of honey
• 15 drops of lavender essential oil
• 6 drops of lemon essential oil
• jar or bowl for melting soap base
• Silicone mold
directions
Chop soap into smaller pieces. It will melt faster this way. Place in bowl and microwave (or double boil). Be careful to watch soap and not let it burn. If you are using microwave, heat in 30 second increments, stirring frequently. Once soap is melted add your essential oils first. Once essential oils have been added and mixed thoroughly, add the lavender buds, lemon zest and honey. Have your mold ready to go, on a flat, even surface. You’ll want to move quickly before the soap cools too much. Mix everything thoroughly again, and pour mixture into mold. Let the soap cool for 2-3 hours until bars are completely solid. Wrap or package however you like.
