A home is made with love and dreams.” We hope you enjoy this month’s emphasis on valuable home-related services and other steps that help us all achieve healthy, happy homes as personal cocoons. One organization that made us recently feel quite at-home as an extended community was Refresh Frisco, a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit. They hosted the group’s first-ever Spurs and Sparkles Gala to raise funds to ensure that local youths have access to personal hygiene items. They serve 1,400-plus students through 84 schools in Frisco and Little Elm. We had such an enjoyable time at this event, which offered an H-E-B buffet, a live auction (my personal favorite due to such an entertaining auctioneer), casino fun, Manik tequila tasting, live music by Charlie Cope and bakery treats. What’s not to like about a gala at which you can wear jeans, boots, sparkles, dresses and cowboy or cowgirl hats? We’re told the event raised thousands of dollars (at press time, staffers were still tabulating), due to the generosity of so many business leaders in our Frisco region. Hats off to this wonderful, communitywide support. And, we hope this spring you’re able to fill your own home with love and dreams.

ECO-FRIENDLY PHILLIPS CREEK RANCH LANDSCAPE COMMITTEE VOLUNTEERS PLAN TO REVIVE AND RESTORE COMMUNITY ENVIRONMENT One seven-member volunteer committee has met almost every other week for a year to address the many challenges attacking the landscape, green space and environmental conditions of Phillips Creek Ranch, one of Frisco’s newest and largest award-winning master-planned community. They also walked the 100-acre grounds to inventory more than 2,500 trees and countless bushes. They accompanied botanists as they examined trees. They championed the removal of 80-plus dead trees or tree stumps. They formulated plans for rebeautification of the common areas, and they championed remulching of all the community’s playgrounds. As the leader of a compassionate and multispecialty dental team in two Frisco locations, Dr. Dunia Korous, DDS, FICOI, SMT, wholeheartedly infuses holistic medicine principles into the oral health benefits that she and her team deliver to Millennium Smiles patients. "Dental and overall health conditions are undeniably interconnected. That's why we treat the immediate dental needs of our patients, while also addressing and solving the root causes of certain developments, such as airway and myofunctional disorders," Dr. Korous states. "Our mission is to also help treat underlying causes of common dental issues that are interrelated with our patients' well-being." Rather than rushing into surgically improving teeth, Dr. Korous says her team also focuses on good dental hygiene and nutritional care while aiming to provide non-invasive treatments to their patients whenever possible. "We also incorporate advanced, state-of-the-art technology to be the trusted 'go-to' dentist office. We treat our patients not only for cosmetics, but also to help improve sleep breathing disorders and oral muscular disorders. From toddlers to grandparents, Dr. Korous says one of the main observations that Millennium Smiles patients remark upon is their style of stress-free dentistry. Additionally, for younger patients, they have a dedicated procedure room that's kid-friendly and created to ensure children are comfortable and calm during their checkups. Dental appointments are necessary because they help dentists detect cavities (tooth decay) early, as well as other resulting symptoms, reminds Dr. Korous. Industry sources indicate tooth decay and periodontal disease are among the two most common chronic diseases in the United States. It's clearly better to spot oral cancer as early as possible, too. Poor oral hygiene even has been linked to bone loss, inflammation of blood vessels, hardened arteries, high blood pressure, blood clots and fertility problems. Because this dental team is passionate about making sure all of the body parts involved in chewing food are operating at peak efficiency, they incorporate biometrics in treating the intense pain and discomfort of TMJ. When patients present with TMJ problems, Dr. Korous says it's often in the form of headaches or pain with chewing hard food.

"It should never be a choice between enjoying the things you love and being pain-free. With advanced biometric services, like a Joint Vibration Analysis, you can get your TMJ issues treated properly," she adds. This analysis is simple, she explains. "We have a device that goes over your head, like headphones, and then you do a variety of movements with your jaw. The JVA determines if your TMJ joint is functioning efficiently. If it isn’t functioning properly, there are several treatments that can be prescribed for therapy. The key to the JVA is using the sensors to check out the vibration of the joint." She says when your TMJ is moving too much, it will click and pop, and the problem is the muscles operating the joint get tired, which is a cause of headaches and pain. The joint comes out of alignment, and that causes further problems. Getting the diagnostic information to a dentist to solve TMJ problems is quite important, Dr. Korous says. "Understanding the body’s efficiency is the reason doctors trust advanced biometrics." Another innovative approach at Millennium Smiles is the use of ozone therapy, which serves to eliminate the anxiety-inducing sound of a dentist’s drill. Dr. Korous says ozone therapy uses ozone gas to combat the harmful

She continued at University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio where she obtained her Doctor of Dental Surgery with distinction in dental education. She also obtained certifications in areas of cosmetic dentistry, as well as implant dentistry. She obtained her Fellowship in International Congress of Oral Implantology, and is a member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry and American Academy of General Dentistry. She also enjoys time with her family, travel and dancing.

In 2021, she brought that passion to life with the opening of Burress Design Group, a McKinney-based design firm at 6617 Virginia Parkway, Suite A. “I enjoyed the process so much,” says Christina Burress, lead interior designer and founder of Burress Design Group. “It wasn’t until our friends lauded over the design of our home, encouraging me to get into the design business, did I consider pouring my heart and soul into other people’s homes. Four years later, that’s exactly what I did!”

Burress Design Group is a full-scale interior design firm, offering a wide range of design services for residential and commercial clients, including procurement of lighting, furnishings, local art, textiles, plumbing, hardware, appliances, flooring, tile and countertops. The team also works with clients on selecting paint colors, wall and window coverings, custom cabinetry and exterior finishes. The design firm's professionals serve all of the DFW Metroplex, as well as other areas of Texas. A team member will set up a phone consultation to discuss the scope of the project followed by

an in-person initial consultation to see the space and begin brainstorming ideas. Next comes pulling the design elements together onto a design board where the client can see the design and the designer can discuss how to move forward. Once the design is approved, design products are ordered and if construction is part of the design scope, demo will begin. Lastly, Burress Design Group staffers install and style the new products in a home or office, resulting in a fresh, new space. One of the hallmarks of Christina’s design aesthetic is her ability to incorporate a mix of traditional and modern elements into her spaces giving them a sense of authenticity and timelessness. Clients indicate she has a talent for layering textures, patterns and colors to create warmth and depth in her designs. Christina says she enjoys mixing vintage and antique pieces with contemporary design elements to create a cohesive look. Revitalize Living Or Working Space: Design Tips to Try LIGHTING Kelvin temperatures, the color temperature of a light source, can affect how the colors of the walls appear to the human eye. A light source with a low color temperature (2000K-3000K) will emit a warm, yellow-orange light that can make colors appear more muted and warm. A light source with a medium color temperature (3500K-4500K) will emit a neutral white light, making colors appear more true to life. A light source with a high color temperature (5000K-6500K) will emit a cool, blue-white light, making colors appear more vibrant and cool. Christina recommends using the latter color temperatures in offices and retail spaces, where a bright and energizing atmosphere is desired. In homes, she recommends using 3500-5000 Kelvin LED bulbs. This will brighten the space and increase resale value.

SHOWER NICHE A pony wall is a perfect place to put a niche because the wall hides anything behind it until walking into the shower. Toiletries would no longer be an eyesore taking away from beautifully designed bathroom. This still works even if there is a bench along the half wall. The niche would be framed out directly above the bench. Make sure the niche is tall enough to hold those 33-ounce shampoo bottles. Christina recommends 14 inches tall by 30 inches wide for a single niche when space allows. If an area does not allow for a niche that length, add a shelf three-fourths of the way up for smaller items in a traditional-sized shower niche; this gives more use and function. Because traditional niches are taller than they are wide, there is a lot of wasted vertical space.

PAINT The sheen level of paint can affect its durability, ease of cleaning and overall appearance. A flat finish is often used on ceilings, an eggshell finish is used on walls, while a semi/ high-gloss finish is more commonly used on trim and cabinets. Christina encourages clients with smooth walls to step outside their comfort zone and paint walls satin, ceilings in semi/high gloss and trim in semi-gloss. This can make a house feel so much brighter.

AREA RUGS When it comes to selecting the right size area rug for a bedroom, living room, or dining room, there are a few key factors to consider. The size of the room, the layout of the furniture, and the overall design of the space will all play a role in determining the best rug size. Most people choose too small of an area rug for their space making the room feel smaller than it actually is. There are exceptions but typically place at minimum an 8x10 area rug under a king-size bed with a 9x12 as an even better option if space allows. For queen-size beds, a 6x9 or an 8x10 would work nicely, and for a twin, a 5x8 or 6x9. These measurements can vary based on furniture, room size, and individual client needs. Many designers insist on installing a round rug under a round table because those are the rules. Christina recommends playing with shapes to spice up a space. Try sourcing a square rug under a round dining table. The chairs should all fit on the rug when both are pushed in and scooted back.

A peek at what’s ahead: bold cabinet colors, statement hardware and swaths of stone. When designing your dream kitchen, it’s important to balance timeless features with elements that reflect your personality and design aesthetic. You may not plan to remodel your kitchen each year (does anyone do that?), but that doesn’t mean there aren’t creative ways to keep your space feeling modern and fresh. We spoke with interior designer Brooke Cover about the trends in kitchen design she’s seeing this year, touching on everything from cabinet colors and lighting to tile and countertop combos she’s loving.

TAKING THE COUNTER MATERIAL UP THE BACKSPLASH Although the iconic subway tile backsplash is timeless in its own right, Brooke says she is seeing a big shift toward marble slab backsplashes — which add drama and depth to the kitchen. Not only is it easier to clean than tile, but a marble backsplash and countertop also sets the tone for the entire space and makes a big statement.

WARMING UP THE WHITE We doubt the classic white kitchen will ever completely go out of style, but trends show people are going away from the white kitchen and gray cabinets. They’re opting for white mixed with warmer wood tones, dark greens and blues. Some homeowners are mixing vintage in with the new and modern through butcher block islands or other unique cabinetry choices. Black is making a bold comeback in some kitchens, while others usher in warmth through painted islands or other darker contrast tiles in the bar area. You don’t have to leave behind the timelessness when you warm up your space if you opt for equally timeless black and wood-stained accents. If you want a quick refresh, consider adding pops of wood through cutting boards or other decor accents on countertops or open shelves.

CONTRAST, CONTRAST, CONTRAST! From painted and stained islands to dark lower cabinetry with bright white uppers and mixed lighting fixtures, contrast is the name of the game this year. You’ll see this juxtaposition between clean white and darker colors or even this year’s favorite - greens and blues - all over newly designed kitchens. You’re not breaking any rules by coordinating sculptural pendants over the kitchen island with more vintage-inspired gooseneck sconces over the standalone bar or a chandelier over the eat-in kitchen.
