Speaking of which, did you see where Frisco ranked in a new study regarding America's "happiest cities?" In this study, Frisco was the only city in the top 10 that rank 100 for a personal finance score. Frisco ranked 72.31 as a well-being score and 84.86 for a quality of life score. Plano was the only other Texan city in the top 10. See additional details on page 13. In February, we also observe Black History Month. Frisco Among 10 Happiest U.S. Cities: University Of Pennsylvania Study Frisco finished fifth overall in the ranking of U.S. happiest cities, per a new study completed by University of Pennsylvania researchers. The study analyzed the 200 largest American cities, based on 13 different metrics in three categories: personal finance, well-being and quality of life. Frisco was No. 1 for both marriage rate (62.6%) and the percentage of residents living below the poverty level (2.5%). Additionally, the city ranks No. 2 for its typical living costs.

Bringing together local business professionals and community residents to celebrate varied cultures and interests, while also recognizing all the wonderful factors that everyone has in common, is the mission of Kevin Westerfield, who founded the new Frisco Diversity Leadership Council last September. "Working together to make our community a better place through networking, inclusion and inspiring each other is what motivates our members," Kevin summarizes. "This is the right thing to do ethically; plus, it's a strong, documented economic driver for future business growth at all levels of our community." Joining FDLC president Kevin on the executive committee are: Martin Fayomi, GIDI; DeAdrian “Dee” Maddox, DMX Consulting; Lucas Payne, Force Energy Group; and Kimberley Evans, Purposed Consulting LLC. Kevin says this new group focuses on building relationships and partnerships to assist each other in business endeavors, as well as in tackling life's challenges. Events include keynote speakers, business presentations, networking activities, art shows, meeting political candidates' events and other types of mixers.

"We're also sharing details about important topics, such as workforce training, accessing small business loans or grants, how to optimize social media for marketing purposes, certifications for various professionals or minority-owned businesses, and overcoming economic challenges," Kevin adds. He says the group will promote ways for developing diverse personal and business networks. "We encourage one another through support, mentoring and sharing best practices and experiences, too." At press time, the council's executive committee members were working on registering the organization as a 501(c)(3), adding finishing touches on the group's marketing plan, building a business directory, seeking sponsors and lining up additional mixers, fundraising, philanthropic and training events. They say they hope to offer diversity education and awareness programs as well. "We will advocate for the value of diversity in the Frisco Business Community and lead by providing the business opportunities necessary to thrive in an increasingly competitive diverse global marketplace," asserts Frisco resident Kevin.

"After a thorough search, I found a solid ISEE curriculum in which we're confident," she adds. "Due to these test levels covering multiple grades, it's a delicate balance between embellishing what students already know versus teaching them new subject matter. For example, math has a progression. You really have to watch how you're building on it. We assist based on how we see each student work." Regardless of the test type, Sandy says the tutors start with a practice test on the first day to see where a student is at with knowledge and recall. "From then on, we focus on what they really need to work on, periodically taking more practice tests. We also assist with test strategy, discussing time management and how to pace oneself during testing." Sandy says Tutor Doctor instructors also assist homeschooled students, particularly in math and science subjects. Many students learned very well during the online, virtual education platforms made necessary by the COVID-19 pandemic, however, Sandy says many students also fell behind. "Some students are more visual learners, or are dealing with ADHD and focus challenges. Some do better in small group settings. Students with these learning styles may be feeling lost, so we help them realign."

She says because class sizes have increased since the pandemic due to fewer teachers, tutors are fulfilling a specific niche related to time-strapped school teachers as well. "We all celebrate student successes along the way, sometimes through high fives or singing, sometimes just through sharing a common lingo or inside jokes," she confides. "In the end, we're teaching students how to unlock their potential, along with ways to solve problems and filling them with confidence." Regarding questions from parents, Sandy says it's about explaining how each unique initiative works and how long it may take to witness results. "We first work on making good, informed decisions regarding how to best help each child. We generally make steady progress, but it can take a couple of months to see students' turnaround." "What we do typically see right away is an increase in school classroom participation, less headaches and stomach aches, and many more smiling students," she confirms. Keri painstakingly planned, designed and curated the space with care. When we first stepped inside, we gasped as our eyes beheld the glory. No detail went unnoticed in this dreamy dressing room. Here are some guiding principles that can be drawn from her exquisite taste and vision. How you organize your closet will of course differ based on the size of your space, the size of your wardrobe, and the kind of life you lead. But applying the guidelines Keri used in her space will result in a much more organized and aesthetically pleasing space.

1. USE REAL ESTATE WISELY Reserve the front and middle of the closet for clothes worn most often. For someone who gets dressed for work each morning at 6 a.m., work clothes should be at the front of the closet. Store lesser-worn items like formal wear and out-of-season clothes toward the back and on the upper shelves. The large mirror and counter with chair provides the perfect spot to select jewelry and finalize finishing outfit touches. While every closet is different, the key here is everything has a home.

2. ORGANIZE BY KIND AND COLOR Group clothes by kind first and color second. This ensures quick location of that favorite shirt when it’s needed. Bonus - it’s easy on the eye. Group like with like: Gather belts, sweaters, long-sleeve shirts, work pants, dresses, button-down shirts, jeans, shorts, etc., and decide the best place to store each item as a group (e.g., hang pants in the closet, fold and stack sweaters in a bureau). Working with groupings will help you figure out how much space you need and the best way to store each type of item.

3. UPGRADED HANGERS The simplest and fastest way to make a BIG difference in your closet organization is to get matching hangers that go beyond the traditional plastic or wire hangers. And for sure ditch any with paper from the dry cleaner! Here’s a few of our favorite elevated hangers:

UPDATE ON TWO PARKS RENAMED TO HONOR AFRICAN-AMERICAN FAMILIES’ CONTRIBUTIONS TO FRISCO

In March 2021, Frisco city council members approved renaming First Street Park as Jack Hamilton Park and Persimmon Park behind Frisco City Hall as Jimmy and Clara Jones Park. These were the first two Frisco parks to be named after African-Americans. Frisco Park and Trail Naming Committee members reviewed 36 applications proposing 12 different names, according to a city staff memo. The half-acre Jack Hamilton Park was named after the pastor who founded Frisco's first African-American church in 1914 in his home, and later moved the church to its current location at First and Ash streets. The church building also served as Frisco’s first African-American school until 1964.

During weekdays, the building was known as Hamilton Elementary School, and on weekends it became Hamilton Chapel Baptist Church. The park was originally completed during 1980. It features a basketball court, picnic tables and a playground. Jimmy and Clara Jones also have strong ties to the Hamilton Chapel Baptist Church and Frisco community. Jimmy Jones is the great-nephew of Jack. Jimmy, Clara and their children lived near the church, with decades of involvement. Their contributions extended beyond the Black community to benefit the city as well as Frisco ISD. Construction on the Jimmy and Clara Jones Park was expected to be completed by summer 2022, however, at the end of 2022, additional drainage systems and adjustments to the interpretive play area were still underway. A design concept for the park was chosen through public input for the 2.8-acre site behind city hall south of Page Street between Jacob and Burlington streets. The concept is multifunctional due to its location near apartments, homes, businesses, the public library and city hall. Possible amenities include an amphitheater, meandering paths and electrical outlets and Wi-Fi. Proposed landscaping was inspired by North Texas Blackland Prairie ecoregion. February includes Black History Month, during which contributions of African-American communities throughout U.S. history are commemorated, from civil rights leaders, journalists and inventors to musicians, artists and politicians. In 1926, a weeklong celebration highlighted history, lives and contributions of Black Americans. In 1976, that week was officially made a monthlong celebration.
