Summer's the perfect time to come up with a wish list of activities to enjoy and ways to unwind and relax. Some of the best summers are often not filled with constant activities and trips, but are those that reflect a slower pace and simple moments of enjoying small details around us. Although the “lazy days of summer” isn’t always something we can attain with our packed schedules, it's refreshing to take time to slow down and enjoy some of the simple pleasures that remind us of our own childhoods. Some of the best times spent can be a backyard barbecue with friends, making s’mores by a fire pit, spending a day on the water, eating snow cones or ice-cream on a hot summer day, or simply taking in the night sky. while a prosthodontist reconstructs worn, broken or missing teeth. Blending these two specialties creates wonderful results and super smiles, he assures. “Our goal is for patients to receive an accurate, honest assessment of their or their child’s dental condition,” states the specialist who has been a licensed dentist since 2002, a prosthodontist since 2005 and an orthodontist since 2007. As a result of his 15 combined years of preparation, he has five additional years of hardcore training about advanced dental matters compared to primary care dentists. Specifically, Jensen Orthodontic Arts offers braces of various types, orthopedic jaw modifications, orthodontics appropriate to age, as well as emergency care. They also provide implants, dentures, specialty care and emergency prosthodontics care. Advanced technology and continuing education is important to fellow orthodontic care members at this office, as evidenced by them being registered dental assistants. “We also offer low-visibility and invisible treatment options, such as clear braces, Invisalign clear aligners and lingual braces,” notes clinical patient manager Marisela Morantes. “Flexible financial arrangements and this office’s multiple family member discounts are popular with our patients, too.” Before being in private practice for the past 15 years, Dr. Jensen received his dental degree

from Baylor College of Dentistry. His specialist training began with prosthodontics at UT San Antonio, where he was a resident for three years who executed high-level training for complex treatment planning and refined hand skills. During this residency, he says he handled complicated interdisciplinary patients who often required orthodontics as part of their plan. He then undertook a two-year residency in orthodontics, becoming the first dual specialist in prosthodontics and orthodontics to ever graduate from UT San Antonio. He’s still currently one of only about 20 such professionals in North America with dual certificates in both specialties. Dr. Jensen is a board-certified orthodontist and a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics—a voluntary distinction reportedly achieved by only 25 percent of practicing orthodontists. His accolades include Patients’ Choice Award Winner and D Magazine best dentist multiple years running. He is also recognized for his charity work with Smiles Change Lives program.

“Family, community and church are all of paramount importance to me,” says the man of many skills and interests. While Dr. Jensen was in college at BYU, he minored in the Korean language. He took a break from college and his own pursuits and served among the Korean people in Korea as a missionary for two years. “I gained a new respect for people from faraway lands, their language, their customs, and the reality that there are different cultures who look at the world differently than we do in America,” he recalls. Regarding other interests, Dr. Jensen enjoys photography, and even offers personal photo sessions with his patients. Many of these faces are on display in the dental office and on the practice’s website. His mother was a piano teacher and taught him to play at a young age. He confides that he makes time to practice nearly daily and

is sometimes asked to play for various reasons in church. He even sings with Millennial Choirs and Orchestras, an organization whose purpose is to soften hearts, improve lives and unite communities across America by creating beautiful sacred and classical music that praises God. He has performed in the Myerson Symphony Center in Dallas and even in Carnegie Hall in New York. As a teenager, he says he wanted to become a pilot. He earned his license when he was 17 years old and continues to fly whenever time allows. Dr. Jensen lives in Prosper, and admits that finding a work/home balance can be challenging, but that “people business” should take precedence over nearly everything else in life. 3595 S. A legendary, shaved ice shop in Frisco awaits eager snow cone beavers at 6427 Elm St. Owner Mary Sanchez has operated the stand since 1983. Mary says she makes her snow cone flavor offerings fresh daily, not from concentrates. For some flavors, she says she starts with real fruit or extracts and creates customized blends. One of her go-to, personal favorites is raspberry with cream. “We have 50-plus regular flavors, plus a handful of new ones I plan to introduce this season. Although we had a late start this year, due to low or nonexistent supplies and lagging materials for equipment repairs, we hope everyone will come see what it’s all about.” She says if supplies remain lacking, she may have to ask customers to bring their own cups. “But I have the greatest customer base in the world. I’m very lucky. They bend over backward to help, if I need it.” Her online fans indicate they value the shop’s overall quality, variety of amazing flavors, superior smooth ice, welcoming atmosphere and the friendly staff. She says it’s been exceedingly enjoyable to see adults, who used to come get snow cones as children themselves, bringing their own children to partake. “We’re even getting into third generations now with grandkids,” she adds. Mary’s hours of business this summer are Tuesdays through Fridays, 2-10 p.m. and 3-10 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays.

THE SECOND-EVER LEADER IN FRISCO’S HISTORY IS ABOUT TO START, AS MANAGER OF NEARLY 35 YEARS RETIRES

Wes Pierson’s first day as Frisco city manager is scheduled to be Aug. 2. Following a nationwide search, Wes was the chosen leader to succeed Frisco’s first (and only) city manager, George Purefoy, who retired on June 30 after nearly 35 years of service. In the interim, Henry Hill, deputy city manager, is acting as city manager. “Frisco is a phenomenal city. I’m going to start by being focused on learning from our people

and understanding how our culture works,” says Wes. “Frisco is already extremely well managed. But I’m prepared to provide a new perspective and balance it with the city’s strong foundation to then prepare Frisco for its future as a worldclass city.” He says his personal impressions of Frisco are that “it’s the special place where people want to be.” Having lived in Texas since 2009, he says he and his family previously visited

relatives who live in Frisco. As coach of his daughter’s basketball team, he adds that the team played at FieldHouseUSA Frisco. Wes has more than 13 years of city management experience, including the last seven years as city manager in the Town of Addison. He also served the cities of Corpus Christi and Allen, Texas. Addison’s organizational and strategic approach is grounded in always caring first about its people and customers, he says, while delivering high levels of service in kind and results-oriented ways. “I get the sense that Frisco’s core principles are similar.” Wes surmises his predecessor, George, summarizes it best: “Frisco is amazing due to the people who drove the city’s financial investments, which brought big dividends. Those wise investments netted clear results.” The candidate pool included 55 applicants, from 17 states, before being narrowed to four finalists. The selection process was facilitated by Pennsylvania-based Affion Public. Finalists toured the city, met with city department directors, the current city manager and community stakeholders. The final candidates engaged in two rounds of in-person interviews with city council members, which included sharing a presentation about their vision for Frisco’s future. Frisco Mayor Jeff Cheney says, “We knew this was the biggest decision we would ever make as a council. In fact, we knew it could be one of the most important decisions in the history of Frisco. We

promised to find a city manager who aligned with our culture, priorities and vision for the city’s future. We couldn’t be more impressed with the collective caliber of talent and experience in the finalist pool. But we’re confident and unanimous in our support for Wes Pierson stepping into the role of Frisco’s next city manager.” Wes, who is fluent in Spanish, has a master’s degree in public administration from George Mason University. He earned a bachelor’s degree in international studies at Brigham Young University. He holds a certificate in public finance from Texas Tech University, completed the Leading Educating and Developing Program (LEAD) from University of Virginia, and finished the Public Executive Institute Program at the University of Texas at Austin. He also spent three years as a project manager at the International City/County Management Association in Washington, DC. Among his most recent credits are developing long-range strategic plans for economic development, transportation, parks and recreation, trails, open space and streetscape beautification; creating comprehensive asset management plans and long-range financial planning models to prioritize investments in infrastructure; leading reviews of development-related regulations and policies to transition a ‘growth’ community to one of redevelopment/renewal; and achieving AAA bond ratings from both Standard & Poor’s and Moody’s, an elite accomplishment by 11 Texas cities, including Frisco.

Donations to one local nonprofit go toward feeding the can-do spirit that lies within military veterans who face some of life’s most demanding physical, mental, emotional and social challenges after being critically wounded. Founder Rick Turner shares that the Spirit of a Hero charitable group provides financial, developmental and community support to veterans of the US armed forces and their families. During April 2012, Rick, who is a former 82nd Airborne Division special parachute operator, Operation Desert Storm fire support specialist and Purple Heart recipient, says he read the story of a young 82nd Airborne paratrooper who had lost all four limbs. “This young man, SSGT Travis Mills, had lost his limbs but not his spirit. He was determined to drive on and be the husband and father he always intended despite his injuries,” he recalls. “I knew I had to do something to help, so I organized a motorcycle ride that, in one day, raised $38,805. From that day on, the spirit to help was sparked and Spirit of a Hero was born.” Travis, 25 at the time, whose in-laws live in Frisco, was serving his third deployment in Afghanistan when he stepped on an improvised explosive device. Experts reasoned that Travis’ size detonated a mine that smaller soldiers had trekked over safely, leaving him one of the war’s five quadruple-amputee survivors. The name “Spirit of a Hero” truly describes who we are and who we help, says Rick’s wife, Tancy, who is co-founder and executive director of the 501(c)3 organization. “The men and women we help have sacrificed limbs to protect our freedom. While many people would have given up, these brave service members decided to fight.” While the Turners hoped to secure 100 bikers donating $50 each for that first fundraiser, the caravan ended up consisting of 1,800 motorcycles. They recall how everything just fell into place, like it was predestined to happen.

To date, the group has assisted the following heroes: • 2012 Recipient – SSGT Travis Mills – Quadruple amputee. • 2013 Recipient – SGT Jordan Folmar – Double leg amputee. • 2014 Recipient – SSgt Marcus Burleson – Double arm amputee. • 2015 Recipient – SSgt Omar Milan – Single leg amputee, soft tissue and nerve damage to left leg, damage to left hand with loss of index finger, and damage to right arm with loss of the elbow and nerve damage. • 2016 Recipient – Sgt Adam Mayo – Quadriplegic. • 2017 Recipient – Cpl Brian Aft – Double leg amputee. • 2018 Recipient – SGT Stephen Jackel - Double leg amputee. • 2019-20 Recipient – Navy SEAL Dan Licardo Double leg amputee. • 2021 Recipient – Sgt Michael Carnell - Stage IV Colon and Liver Cancer. Any donation, large or small, goes to help a combat wounded veteran and their families, says Spirit treasurer Joe Hockaday. “Our all-volunteer board does what it takes to help raise awareness, funds and spirits of our wounded veterans,” he adds.
