LIFESTYLE LETTER

Explore Earth Day On April 22, 2022, And Every Day Spring symbolizes new beginnings. Nature reveals its beauty through budding trees and flowers, and fresh, temperate air invites us to spend more time outdoors. As we prepare gardens and flowerbeds, new life awakens joy in the beauty of our world and the desire to explore it. And for those of us without a green thumb, the local markets are gearing up for a busy season of visitors to enjoy fresh produce from local farmers. There are a multitude of diverse spots around town to discover, whether it's a new restaurant with a great patio to enjoy with friends and family, a hiking trail to take in nature and the surrounding scenery or a niche boutique hotel for a relaxing staycation. This year marks 52 years since Earth Day was founded. What was a day of environmental education now is a global observation. For our April edition, we wanted to share how some of our neighbors explore both locally and globally. We'd love to hear from you about your favorite hidden gems in town and your go-to travel destinations, so drop us line or share it with us on Facebook or Instagram. Here's to a happy spring, full of adventure with peace and sunshine.

FRISCO’S FIRST AND ONLY TO-DATE CITY MANAGER RETIRES THIS SUMMER

18

O UR TOWN | L IFE + CU LTURE

34. 5 Years Of Dedication

When George Purefoy became a proud Frisco resident in 1987, he also became the city's first manager. After nearly 35 years in that leadership role, George is set to retire on June 30. “The only reason for my retiring is that since I will be 70 this June, I need to take some time to do some of the big items that Debra [his wife] wants to do while we are both still physically able to do so," George explained to fellow city staffers when he announced his retirement. Those "big items" include overseas travel -- trips that he and Debra wanted to take since they were married but didn't have long enough stretches of time to do so, he says. As a natural problem solver, George confirms one of the job components he's enjoyed most is being part of untangling the difficult issues present in a burgeoning city. "The more complex the issue, the more I enjoy it," he adds, with a knowing chuckle. He cites the long-running dispute since 2012 over the cleanup of lead-contaminated property owned by a battery recycling plant, Exide Technologies, as the most challenging matter with which Frisco representatives dealt. City officials still envision a park there that will accommodate a bike-and-hike trail, triathlons, rowing teams, festivals, 5Ks and open spaces.

FRISCO BACK THEN When George started on the job, the City of Frisco employed only 50 people and its population was about 5,000. Now, Frisco employs more than 1,300 people and its population has grown to about 215,065. In fact, a U.S. Census Bureau study in May 2020 named Frisco the nation's fastest-growing city due to its 71.1 percent population growth rate between April 1, 2010, and July 1, 2019. As of January 2022, the city is 77% developed. Current city population projections indicate the city may grow to approximately 325,000 by 2030. Although George says Frisco's potential was clearcut, he adds that in the mid-to-late 90s there was little interest from external sources in doing business that far North in the state. "No one wanted to let us in to see them, but the mall changed that. It was like a stamp of approval. Then circumstances flipped into a sea of change. We weren't expecting how fast it came, but it sure was nice. We certainly accomplished a lot." Prior to joining the Frisco city staff, George had been city manager for the City of Columbus, Texas, and prior to that, city administrator of the City of Taylor Lake Village, Texas. Before that, he served as administrative assistant for the City of Boerne, Texas. He holds

O UR TOWN | L IFE + CU LTURE

a master's degree in public administration. In the past, he also worked as teaching/research assistant at East Texas State University, and was a former police officer in Arlington, Texas. George is considered the “lead architect” of Frisco's public-private partnerships that resulted in developing several prominent hotspots, such as Stonebriar Centre, Toyota Stadium, the Comerica Center, The Star in Frisco and most recently, the relocation of PGA Of America headquarters from Florida. "The PGA project surprised me, and was a reminder to never give up," he says. Executive search and advisory services firm Affion Public, headquartered in Hershey, Pennsyvlania, was hired to find a new Frisco city manager. Under administrative direction of city councilmembers, Frisco's city manager performs duties of chief executive officer in the administration of all services, affairs, and programs of the city. The firm posted the position on Feb. 23 with the deadline of March 23 for receiving resumes. They are slated to finish finalist interviews by the end of May. True to George's steadfast nature, he says he's willing to stay on, if necessary, until the new manager can get settled.

RECENT ACCOLADES DURING GEORGE'S TENURE In 2018, Frisco topped Money Magazine’s prestigious list of ‘Best Places to Live in America.' Frisco made Money's list again in 2021-22, ranking No. 19. Other, recent notable city highlights include: • No. 1 Best Real Estate Market in the U.S. (2021, Wallethub) • No. 1 Best City to Do Business in Texas (2020, homecity/Better Homes & Gardens) • No. 1 Most Recession Proof City (2020, Smartasset) • Safest Cities in America (No. 5, 2022 – Moneygeek; No. 2, 2021, Smartasset) • No. 2 Best City for Jobs After Graduation (2020, Interest.com) • No. 22 Best Cities for First-Time Homebuyers (2021, Wallethub) George's words of wisdom revolve around the fact that major financial investments by Frisco's mayors and councilmembers through the years always brought big dividends. "Investments came back manyfold. Our leaders always wanted to invest in the city and they made good decisions. As a city manager, you can't ask for better than that," he states. "It's been a great career, especially here. And it's been an absolute privilege to represent Frisco."

“We provide a long-term safe place for healing and growth to individuals impacted by this type of trauma, including food, shelter, education and emotional care.” -Treasured Vessels Foundation Founder/CEO Alicia Bush

Building Shelters. Healing Hearts. Restoring Hope. Those outcomes are objectives of supporters for Treasured Vessels Foundation, a nonprofit whose staff provides safe communities that restore survivors of sexual exploitation and help them achieve their true potential. "We seek justice, dignity and hope. We desire for people to look past brokenness and cracks on the outside to reveal the treasure inside. We provide a longterm safe place for healing and growth to individuals impacted by this type of trauma, including food, shelter, education and emotional care," says Treasured Vessels Foundation Founder/CEO Alicia Bush, who adds a calling was placed on her heart to launch this initiative during 2015 after she discovered the lack of long-term placement for trafficking survivors. Human trafficking occurs in every country and state, says Alicia, and Texas is ranked No. 2 in the nation for human trafficking calls. According to the Trafficking Institute statistics, 83% of trafficking cases in 2020 started online.

WHERE PEOPLE ARE FREE As a Texas native, wife, homeschooling mother of three, author and international missionary, Alicia is an active member in the C7 Coalition, North Texas Coalition Against Sex Trafficking, C3ST, Youth Homelessness Committee, Frisco Chamber of Commerce, Plano Chamber of Commerce and the CEO Non-Profit Council. Alicia says they currently have a lengthy waitlist of survivors. "Once our funding goal has been met,

we'll break ground and start building adjacent to our current property. This will increase our bed count to 12-plus beds, hopefully by the end of 2022," she adds. The foundation assists survivors from Collin, Denton, Dallas, Tarrant and Grayson counties. Treasured Vessels Foundation staffers also are working to create a property to house up to 80 individuals, and have a goal to launch a community for minors by 2024. The program includes treatment plans, educational support, life skill support and other therapies, such as equine, yoga, gardening, art and music. Morgann Delaney, TVF marketing manager, says the length of their program is between 12 and 36 months for ages 18-24 years old. "The women within this program have experienced a significant decrease in PTSD, depression and anxiety," she adds. “Once a woman is recovered, people just kind of put a band-aid on it or pigeonhole her in a substance and alcohol abuse rehab or some sort of other shelter. We really don't have enough specific solutions for an exploited and trafficked woman. We're going to do this right. We're going to do this together as a community,” says Alicia. In the TVF 2021-2022 Impact Report, Alicia states their goal is to become a lifeline model that can be replicated throughout the United States. 469.405.7149 TreasuredVesselsFoundation.org

THE HARVEST SPRING INTO FRISCO’S COMMUNITY GARDEN AND PLAY IN THE DIRT The Harvest at Frisco Commons is a new, communal space managed by Frisco city staffers that offers raised garden boxes for annual rental, as well as public education space for Frisco residents and volunteers. Gardeners may grow vegetables, fruits, herbs or flowers in their leased space. The Pollinator Ring surrounding the garden is planted with native/adaptive plants that provide numerous ecological benefits, including increased produce yields in the garden. Gotten in on the grand opening special yet? “Groundbreaking Gardeners” receive an initial lease period through December 2022, which includes three additional months of gardening for free. Small garden boxes can be rented for $75 per year, and large garden boxes can be secured for $150 annually. Frisco households are limited to one box each year; large boxes were still available at presstime. To help the community garden flourish in a wellrounded manner, consider the following options: • Donate gardening supplies. These items can include healthy plants, seeds or garden tools. • Participate in Volunteer Work Days. Whether a student seeking volunteer hours or someone who simply enjoys gardening, help is always needed. • Organize a Special Service Project. Looking for a fun team-building activity for teams, civic organizations and corporate groups? Volunteering together makes positive impacts. Gardeners are encouraged to donate surplus produce to support Frisco families in need, through an organization such as the Frisco Family Services Market. Email NaturalResources@FriscoTexas.gov for further details.

Frisco Garden Club Celebrates Nine Decades As City’s Oldest Civic Group

Frisco Garden Club volunteer members and supporters will celebrate the club's 90th anniversary at the annual Wildflower Luncheon on April 29. This will be the first luncheon since 2019, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The group's mission revolves around beautification of the city in a variety of ways. They also provide educational programs and resources for Frisco residents, in addition to working in partnership with leaders of Frisco, local VFW and American Legion posts and the Frisco Heritage Association.

Themed “Tablescapes” are the focus of the luncheon, which execute creative, beautiful, fun, quirky and festive concepts. Seats can be reserved for $63 each, and organizers indicate reservations are required. The event will be held at the Stonebriar Country Club, 5050 Country Club Drive, beginning with registration and a silent auction/raffle at 10:30 a.m. This year's guest speaker at the luncheon is historian, humorist, author and 1973 Paper Moon movie actress, Rose-Mary Rumbley, who is herself turning 90 years young this September and is considered a rock star among the region's senior set. The first Wildflower Luncheon was held in 2003 to raise funds for the Freedom Meadow Memorial Project. It since became the group's signature fundraising community event. Funds raised during the luncheon go toward Frisco Education Foundation scholarships for Frisco ISD seniors, and education programs for Boys & Girls Club projects and the PlantSMART website, in addition to beautification efforts at the city's parks. Believed to be Frisco's oldest, continual civic organization, the club started on April 22, 1932, when 15 women held an organizational meeting. Donna Schmittler, treasurer and former club president 2010-2013, says Ester Warren was elected as the club's first president. Interestingly, Ester's son, Bob Warren, became mayor of Frisco between 1990-1996. The earliest Frisco Garden Club meetings took place in members' homes. Membership was limited to 30 members and dues started at 25 cents. On Nov. 12, 1932, the Frisco Garden sponsored its first flower show. In 1947, the Frisco Garden Club donated a war memorial urn to the city and began partnering with local chapter members of the VFW to sponsor Memorial Day observances. Frisco residents also know of the club members' endeavors through community service activities, such as Arbor Day Celebrations, 9/11 observances, the Buffalo Stomp Seed Spreading, the CrozierSickles House and the Plant SMART Demonstration Garden for water conservation. Club membership is $25 annually. During typical years, the group meets during the third Tuesday each month, September through May at 10 a.m. They take the summer off to tend their gardens. Anyone interested in joining is welcome to first attend as a guest. This 501(c)(3) nonprofit also accepts financial donations. FriscoGardenClub.org

Arbor

CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF TREE PLANTING

Day

With Frisco having earned the "Tree City USA" designation, honoring National Arbor Day on April 29 is an important step. As Arbor Day Foundation supporters celebrate its 50th anniversary during 2022, based on its Nebraska beginnings in 1972, the mission of inspiring people to plant, nurture and celebrate trees has remained unchanged. Frisco's Urban Forestry Program is led by a board of volunteers. The city's Living Legacy Tree Program allows citizens a way to recognize the accomplishments of an individual or group, celebrate a birthday, anniversary, graduation or memorialize a loved one. A variety of trees are offered that grow well in Frisco, including Red Oak, Cedar Elm, Live Oak and Chinese Pistache. Trees may be planted in several locations within neighborhood and community parks. Cost is $500 per tree, which includes professional planting and a permanent memorial/honorary bronze plaque. Call 972.292.6500 for details.
