What’s The True Meaning Of Home? Sometimes, It’s A Homecoming

Julie Brown Patton | julie.patton@citylifestyle.com

The English word “home” is from the Old English word hām, which actually refers to a village or estate where many “souls” are gathered. It implies there's a physical dwelling involved, but the main idea is that it's a gathering of people. This month, our overall theme is "Home," and we're celebrating an expanded definition of the word so it encompasses our community as well. For me personally, I'm celebrating a homecoming of sorts. From being a Frisco resident, I appreciate and relish the vast positives, variety of businesses, caring nonprofits and lifestyle options that the Frisco community offers. That's why it's such an honor to become the publisher of Frisco City Lifestyle. Beginning with the June 2018 edition, I launched the next door publication McKinney & Prosper Lifestyle, and it's been a pleasure to grow with this robust region. Together, we'll be able to achieve many new objectives by supporting each other. Some people believe home is the place where you feel in control and properly oriented in space and time; it's a predictable and secure place. We hope you find Frisco City Lifestyle that secure, local magazine that brings you information, encouragement, knowledge and service options each month. We recently learned that Frisco has 63 employees in total for the business services staff, which handles financial and budget services. While in this edition we highlighted one of the awards this team earned, Frisco's Chief Financial Officer Anita Cothran says there are actually earn two awards they've won each year from the Government Treasurer’s Association of Texas: the Annual Financial Report Certificate and the Annual Distinguished Budget Award. Additionally, their Investment Policy is certified by the GTOT. Anita assures they're very proud of the team they've built here over the last 20 years. We stand proudly with them regarding these milestones, as they shepherd the finances of the city on our behalf.

Downtown Master Plan For Frisco 20 Years In The Making Frisco city officials will begin implementing the Downtown Master Plan this spring. Construction will begin on Elm Street to add on-street parking and a new traffic signal, says Jason Brodigan, Frisco's assistant director of engineering. In the fall, Main Street will have its on-street parking removed to widen the sidewalks to 18 feet, and a pedestrian plaza will be constructed on Fourth Street. Both projects are expected to take one year each to complete.

Good Morning And Welcome to Sunrise Caffé At presstime, Sunrise Caffé was slated to open soon in Frisco at 6065 Sports Village Road. The restaurant's menu includes breakfast classics, such as French toast, omelets and skillet-based dishes. Pastries include quesitos piscolabis and mallorcas. Lunch options, such as burgers, sandwiches and empanadas, will be available from open to close. Several espresso-based drinks also are on the docket: Sunrise-Caffe. com. PGA Frisco Becoming New 'Silicon Valley of Golf'?

Frost Bank Frisco Financial Center representatives slated new construction in Frisco between Warren Parkway and Dallas North Tollway. The $8.5 million, 11,250-squarefoot construction was scheduled to begin April 25, according to a Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation filing. A Frost spokesperson says a Little Elm site is expected to open soon, and a third locaiton in northeast Frisco probably will open in 2024 -- all part of a 28-branch expansion in the Dallas region.

PGA of America will get a new home this year by moving its headquarters from Palm Beach County, Florida, to Frisco. The PGA's new megaplex golf facility is still under construction, with officials indicating they are scheduled to fully open during this June. Frisco officials estimate a $2.5 billion economic impact from the project over the next 20 years. Frisco City Lifestyle first started reporting about this golf hub campus in December 2020.

Microbrewery May Be In Frisco's Future Frisco Planning and Zoning Commissioners recommended approving rezoning that would allow for a small craft brewery: The Ritchey Gin project. Proposed by real estate developer Nack Development, the new enterprise would be a single-story microbrewery, three-story office building and a parking garage to a 2.6-acre piece of land at the northeast corner of 1st Street and Elm Street. The rezoning request will be addressed by Frisco City Council members for consideration at a future meeting.

DFW FENCE PRO AND DFW ROOFING PRO OPERATE SEAMLESSLY FOR CUSTOMERS

ARTICLE BY AMY HENDRICKS PHOTOGRAPHY BY BLAKE LUBY

Many Americans share the dream of wanting to start a business; only some are driven, determined and fortunate enough to make that dream a reality. Blake Luby is the proud owner of not one, but two local businesses: DFW Fence Pro and DFW Roofing Pro. Although they’re separate entities, both were built from the same passion and now operate together as business family. While in his teens, Blake was an avid golfer, playing professionally on mini tours. He says he was considering dozens of golf scholarship offers when fate changed his course. A serious vehicle accident during his senior year in high school resulted in a shoulder injury and derailed his plans. Instead of leaving for college, he recovered from the accident and went to work for his mom’s neighbor, who owned a landscaping business. Although it was a different path from his original plans, he says he found himself gaining valuable skills and experience, such as sales, becoming bi-lingual and getting his agricultural and pesticide licenses. Blake then went on to work for Valley Crest, the company responsible for maintaining the beautiful landscaping at Disney World, and furthered his knowledge and experience on a larger scale. He says he saved money and eventually purchased his own trailer and spray rig, which allowed him to open his own, full-service landscaping company. By the time he turned 22, he’d built and sold three landscaping businesses. The hard work and business knowledge Blake gained in his early years has allowed him to make DFW Fence Pro and DFW Roofing Pro into the thriving businesses they are today. He also attributes his mom, Donna Luby, with instilling in him a strong work ethic. “She raised me with a no-excuses mentality,” he lovingly remembers. He runs his businesses alongside a very tight-knit team that includes his brother, Brandon. Blake considers his team to be all one big family, whether they’re related or not. Kailyn Palladino, who works on the fence team, says she “loves how each person has a role, and can be trusted 100% to do their job.” Kailyn’s husband, Bryce, also works alongside her. Blake refers to Bryce and Brandon as ‘his right-hand men.’ Kailyn jokes, “Bryce and Blake have the same brain.” DFW Fence Pro, the oldest of Blake's two businesses, offers a full range of both residential and commercial fence installation and repair services, including wood and wrought iron fences, as well as custom gates. Their crew can assist in selecting the best option for yards and also match lifestyles and budgets, keeping in mind aesthetics, privacy needs, maintenance and functionality. In addition, DFW Fence Pro offers same-day, 24/7 emergency fence repair and replacement to support their clients after installation. Blake emphasizes the skill and experience his fence crew possesses. “All they do is fences. They’re not just handymen,” he says. DFW Roofing Pro offers a full range of both residential and commercial roofing repair and replacement services, including roof tune-up, gutter replacement and installation, water restoration, garage door repair and installation, painting, siding repair and installation, drywall repair and installation and concrete work. Shortly after DFW Roofing Pro began, McKinney experienced two huge hailstorms, which created rapid growth for the company. Blake recalls that he was once told he wouldn’t make it in the roofing business because it was too difficult. He’s definitely proven that prediction wrong. Both companies are members of the Good Contractors list, have an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau, boast a lifetime workmanship warranty and timely completion on their work, have bonded and insured crews, state-of-theart equipment, and around-the-clock emergency customer support. The general contractors in both DFW Fence Pro and DFW Roofing Pro state they can handle the full scope of any insurance claim, which is paramount during Texas hail seasons. Their teams also guide customers through relevant codes and restrictions. They support customers through approval processes, including providing concise and timely plans and descriptions for the approving parties, while making any needed adjustments for a quick turnaround. Blake says his favorite element about both of his businesses is “helping customers and seeing them happy with the completed job.” “We strive for 100% satisfaction, and we’re committed to excellence. The biggest thing for us is referrals from other happy customers," says Blake, who has lived in and operated in the McKinney region for more than 20 years. Outside of work, Blake still enjoys spending time with his work family by hosting steak dinners at his house and even going on trips together. He has two young boys, Hudson (10) and Hayes (8). His fiancée, Morgan, also has a son, Knox (3). He’s already started sharing his love of golf with their boys. Given the strong work ethic coursing through the family, perhaps the boys will carry on the family business someday.

Frisco Entrepreneur Opens Multipurpose #MiCasaEsTuCasa Bungalow

A 1916-erected building located at 6881 Pecan St. can be considered a Frisco home away from home for various reasons. Because Brooklyn Calloway rents this historic, bookable Brookielynn's Bungalow and a Volkswagen bus in the heart of the Rail District, as well as resides in one of Frisco's oldest houses off Oak Street, one might assume she focuses on everything that's 'Frisco vintage.' However, the modern-minded part of Brooklyn fully embraces technology and contemporary forms of communications. Consequently, she's a professional who captures zest from spontaneous moments and who has built an effervescent business to support busy parents, adventuresome adults and other small business owners like herself.

20

To that end, Brooklyn channeled the charming, turnof-the-century 2,100-square-foot venue during 2018 into a space where women can gather in community, tap into their creativity and host parties or special events. She says she also hosts classes that teach small business owners how to stand out among competitors online. Additionally, her three-dimensional photography installations and studio rooms there provide backdrops to a variety of photographers. The space can anchor company retreats or meetings, too. All rentals come with the use of the house's hallway, porch and kitchen common areas.

ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON PHOTOGRAPHY BY BRANDI RICHARDS

"I like to mentor and train other, ambitious small business leaders through one-to-one coaching, classes, online training, and to offer the bungalow space for business needs and workshops," Brooklyn shares. The creative, former middle school English teacher for 11 years with the Frisco Independent School District initially wanted a spot at which to video customers successfully working with the furniture refinishing tips and craft kits she sold. In fact, she says she set a Guinness World Record in 2016 for the “largest furniture restoration lesson (single venue).” Over time, Brooklyn says the bungalow became an adult version of her childhood tree house.

Currently, her location includes four beauty business offerings: a spray tan and facial specialist, an eyelash extensions technician, a waxing esthetician and a hair stylist. "We're a onestop-shop for women. We've become really good friends, even vacationing together, like a little girls' gang," she quips. Through what she deems The Bungalow Collective, she hosts monthly special gatherings, such as Friendsgiving platter parties, ornament exchanges, speed dating-inspired networking and closet swaps. "We typically have door prizes from Rail District restaurants or boutiques, as ways to support each other in our community," says Brooklyn.

At presstime, she was finalizing a Fine Art Night fundraiser to support the Spirit Of A Hero Foundation, perhaps at Nack Theater to accommodate the large crowd who wanted to participate. This nonprofit provides financial, developmental and community support to veterans of the U.S. armed forces and their families. The Galentine’s style event was slated for the end of February, as an evening of wine, charcuterie board snacks and instructor-guided painting of a male model. "If this type of outing goes over well, we'll plan to rotate future host locations throughout downtown so more people can get to know each other and what the area offers," she adds. In her spare time, this go-getter now conducts two electronic courses and three coaching programs as ways to uplift other business professionals.

Brooklyn says her lifelong motto has been: “Go Big or Go Home!” From the looks of things, she also achieves big results at home -- whichever one she's in. 972.689.5453 BrookielynnsBungalow.com The bungalow's amenities can be previewed by scheduling a tour online. Fun Fact: The bungalow was a house built by a couple named Abram and Mariah Polser Malone, who relocated to Texas from Tennessee. They farmed at the location, and raised six children, one of which became a seamstress who made fine dresses for Frisco ladies. The house stayed in the Malone family for three generations until 1975.

Air -- the most essential element of life (besides chocolate)! That's why Chapman Air & Heat professionals make it their mission to make customers' in-home air quality the best it can be. “I had a dream to create an ethical, profitable company that was an asset to the community. Nothing is more important to quality of life than the quality of the place you spend the most time," says Marvin Chapman, founder in 1981 and current owner. For four decades, Marvin has helped people achieve this goal of healthy air quality. He had an idea that he was able to bring to life: To provide innovative, quality air conditioning to the North Texas area. While doing this, he says he also wanted to provide a workplace through which his employees could grow and thrive. "Happy employees, a team if you will, would allow the company to thrive while providing an essential service." The result was a company that individual homeowners, as well as builders and commercial clients, have come to trust and rely on for their indoor air comfort and quality needs. Marvin, as a talented engineer, oversees all aspects of the systems the company installs. In addition to being the company owner, Marvin is mentor, teacher and friend to his employees. The Chapman Air staff indicates that they work as a team to tackle any project, no matter the size, handling anything from a filter change to replacing multiple systems -- all done with efficiency and expediency. "We've had great success up to this point," reflects Marvin. "Right now, North Texas is growing by leaps and bounds. Our goal is to be the best provider to both new arrivals to the area and families who are well-established here. We are at the forefront of the technologies that will keep them safe and comfortable."

He says they are enthused about the following innovative technologies: • LED light filtration systems that can kill 99.9% of illness-causing viruses, making air in homes as safe as it possibly can be. • HEPA-rated filters for additional particle removal from the air. • Whole house humidification systems to make the winter months significantly more comfortable. • Variable speed air conditioning equipment that is extremely energy efficient, as well as being able to keep the temperature at precisely the temperature you desire. "All this can even be controlled from your smart phone," Marvin adds. Chapman Air offers one-day replacement of residential and commercial air conditioning systems, striving to deliver stress-free experiences to customers. They also offer maintenance plans to keep customers' equipment working at peak performance and to avoid breakdowns. Their technicians receive weekly training, and are knowledgeable about the most up-to-date industry trends and innovations. Additionally, 24-hour emergency service is available from the company. "By applying a simple approach of 'honor our customers with the truth' and by providing personnel that are reliable and professional, we've become one of the largest residential and commercial service providers in our market. As an industry leader for 42 years, we hope to continue to help people, both in these difficult times and well into the future, with value, innovation and respect," assures Marvin, who is proud that the company is rated A+ by the Better Business Bureau. 214.340.4999 ChapmanAir.com

For Homeless Awareness Week, The Samaritan Inn volunteers and staffers collected donations at TomThumb on Stonebridge and Virginia Parkway.

Commitment leads to action is the motto of Frisco Family Services at 9125 Dogwood St., Suite 100. Unwavering dedication led this group to launch services 28 years ago to serve neighbors in crisis by addressing essential needs. "We demonstrate care and support while helping families maintain their dignity, as they navigate through difficult life situations. Through emergency financial assistance, food distribution through Frisco's only community food market, seasonal programs and adult life skills classes, we help those facing tough choices between keeping food on their table, keeping utilities connected or staying in their homes," says FFS Executive Director Nicole Bursey. Financial donations are one way to assist with FFS efforts. Volunteering opportunities for those 16 years and older, as well as corporate groups, include: • Frisco Resale -- unloading, sorting and organizing clothing, furniture and household goods for sales floor. • Food Pantry -- picking up, unloading and sorting food donations, stocking shelves and assisting clients at community food pantry. • Agency Office -- providing staff and client support. • Seasonal Programs -- assist with set-up and execution of client programs • Fundraising -- annual gala and golf tournament. • Corporate/Group Team Building -- seasonal events, summer lunch program or conducting on-location donation drives. • CHAMPS Workshops -- facilitate workshops that provide clients with education, tools and training necessary for self-sufficiency and success.

Additionally, the FFS FeedFrisco initiative encourages collecting food, supplies and funds necessary to keep the FFS Market stocked. By selecting FFS as a charitable recipient when shopping AmazonSmile, Kroger and Tom Thumb, people can give every time they shop. FFS also has the Adopt-A-Shelf program that confirms one's commitment to keep a certain item stocked at the pantry. FriscoFamilyServices.org Another organization, The Samaritan Inn, helps people gain dignity and independence through comprehensive programs. The Samaritan Inn staff claims the nonprofit is the largest and leading homeless program in Collin County, and is the only entity that houses men. They offer several ways to help, including fulfilling needs lists or Amazon wish lists; financial donations; matching gift programs; giving to 3Squares Healthy Meal Program; or Sponor-A-Child to give resident children food, shelter, safety and a chance to learn and have fun. Current company sponsors include SRS Raise The Roof Foundation, Brandon Tomes Subaru, Hutchins Barbecue, Larry and Pam Little, Oncor, Atmos Energy, Emerson and Advantage Storage. Inn Style, the group's resale store, is located in McKinney at 103 East University Drive. Shoppers can find clothing, furniture, small electronics, art and household items, with 100% of store sales going to the Samaritan Inn operating budget. Donations are their life-blood for resale. Furniture pickups are made in Frisco, McKinney, Allen, Anna, Farmersville, Melissa, Plano and Princeton. SamInn.org

Daphne Oz: Beautiful Evenings at Home Emmy-winning TV Host & NY Times Bestselling Author Shares her Dinner Hosting Favorites

New York Times bestselling author Daphne Oz talks about her newest book, “Eat Your Heart Out: All-Fun, No-Fuss Food to Celebrate Eating Clean,” which launches in April. We sat down with Daphne Oz to learn more about her journey to home entertainment.

CITY LIFESTYLE: SHARE WITH US YOUR BACKGROUND AND THE INFLUENCE IT HAD ON YOUR JOURNEY TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY. DAPHNE OZ: I was born in Philly, raised in New Jersey, and now

my husband and our four kids and I live in Florida. I spend a few days each week working in NYC taping our new syndicated talk show, The Good Dish, covering everything delicious in daytime.

CL: WHAT ARE YOUR TIPS FOR HOSTING A MEMORABLE DINNER PARTY AT HOME? DO: When I entertain, my general approach is: Abundant

Simplicity. Appetizers are generous piles of a few different things – olives, hunks of parmesan, spiced nuts, torn bread with herby oil to dunk in, sliced Persian cucumbers with a pool of labne or Greek yogurt, olive oil, and flaky salt for dipping. I look for recipes that are simple or that I’ve made 100 times before that are always crowd pleasers and leave me plenty of time to enjoy my company. The whole point of a beautiful evening together is to make sure you, the host, are relaxed and comfortable, because your guests will take their cue from you.
