In this month's edition, we rally around the theme of Local Love, especially the admiration we have for this community that pulls us together. But did you know Frisco wasn't always called that? Texas State Historical Association representatives indicate that Frisco was originally named Emerson, Texas, for Francis Emerson, a banker who owned a farm in the area. However, "Emerson" was rejected by U.S. Postal Service officials as being too similar to another town in Texas. Between 1902 and 1904, residents chose the name "Frisco City" in honor of the St. Louis–San Francisco Railway, and later shortened it to its present name, Frisco, when it was officially incorporated in 1908. The new Frisco library needs a name for its model dinosaur. Residents are invited to submit suggested names for the full-size T. rex skeleton replica that will stand in the future 155,000 square-foot facility. Visit the Frisco library website through Feb. 6 to suggest your monicker for the prehistoric mascot, which library officials indicate is a "she." We hope you have a lovely February.

American Railroad Museum Seeks Funds For Outdoor Exhibit In Frisco Museum of the American Railroad supporters are requesting financial assistance to reach a $1.4 million capital campaign. The campaign began in November 2020, and was jump-started by a foundation in Dallas that has supported previous phases of construction at the museum. At the beginning of 2021, the museum began matching funds through a $700,000 challenge grant issued by the foundation via dollar-for-dollar, up to $300,000, through the end of 2021. Snowbird Cocktail Lounge And Kitchen To Open In Frisco Hospitality enthusiasts David Nguyen and Sobe Ahmed are debuting a new concept: Snowbird Cocktail Lounge and Kitchen at 6765 Winning Drive, #800. The location was formerly Ziziki’s Greek restaurant. David and Sobe previously opened Gaslight in Dallas, which closed in May 2021 after a fire. They describe the new spot as an upscale art deco-inspired lounge with a "tantalizing array of mixology cocktails," small bites and music. Snowbird is expected to open in spring 2022.

District Names Two New Secondary Campuses Frisco ISD's newest secondary schools have official names. School board trustees unanimously approved the name of Middle School No. 18 to be Richard Wilkinson Middle School and the new intermediate school to be Shana Wortham Intermediate School. Both campuses are scheduled to open in the fall of 2023. Richard and Shana were strong leaders during a period of incredible growth in the community, shaping many of the processes that remain in place today.

ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON PHOTOGRAPHY BY BRANDI RICHARDS Virtuoso Joshua Boulet says his goal was to originate something with which everyone in Frisco could identify when he created a 70-foot mural at Main and Fourth Street. Judging by responses, he reached and surpassed that goal, with the mural still being admired to this day. "With my family living in The Colony my whole life, I really wanted to highlight the great qualities of Frisco, such as its growth, safety, comfort and friendliness. From seeing how public art connected people in Seattle and how those in Singapore responded to the authenticity of sketches, I knew I really, really wanted to be a part of this creative opportunity here in Frisco," says the full-time artist, who responded to the city's open call for submissions three years ago.

The mural that was a solid month in the making.

Although he's been drawing and painting since he "could pick up a pencil" as a toddler, and although he illustrated the mural before starting, he admits there were times when he stared at the colossal, porous wall and wondered what he'd gotten himself into with such a large execution. Because he was creating on a concrete wall with holes, his chosen treatment was through spray paint, and then it became a question of whether he'd ever have enough paint. Unveiled to the public during November 2018, Joshua's downtown wall mural project was managed by Frisco Arts and funded by The Rotary Club of Frisco and the Downtown Advisory Board. Former Frisco Arts President Julie Shipp had shared then that the time was right for the local arts

community to rally around a signature project that tangibly represents the local talent in Frisco. Frisco Association for the Arts (Frisco Arts) has served as the city’s official arts advocacy agency since 2009, originally created by business and city leaders in 1996 to help promote the arts in Frisco. Its mission is to advance the arts in the city through arts advocacy, accessible programs and scholarships. As the local champions of the arts, Frisco Arts members aspire to support and encourage art, design and creativity throughout Frisco. Joshua says he went to the Frisco Heritage Museum to get ideas of the past. "Then I looked around Frisco, and picked things I thought were important about the community," he adds. CONTINUED >

He says as the project evolved, he added various attributes and details. "I worked on it for an entire month, through 10-hour days and most of the time through the night," he adds. Within the mural, admirers also found familiar landmarks, diverse cultures, a thriving sports community and an interactive spot where they can become part of the creation. Joshua does live sketches, watercolors, animations, live drawings, chalk art indoor walls, serial illustrations as well as comics, and he's done other, smaller murals for businesses, such as Eden Lifestyle Boutique in Frisco and in Plano. WHAT’S CONSIDERED TO BE THE WORLD’S FIRST ‘MURAL’? Archaeologists believe they found the world’s oldest-discovered representational artwork in a mural spotlighting three wild pigs on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi. The mural was uranium-series dated as being painted at least 45,500 years ago, far back in a limestone cave called Leang Tedongnge. These ancient images were revealed during January 2021 in the journal Science Advances. The mural reportedly was made with red ochre pigment. Archaeologist Basran Burhan, a Griffith University PhD student in Australia, was credited with discovering the cave and its prehistoric paintings in December 2017. The location is only

accessible during the country’s dry season, at the end of a long hike over mountains through a rugged forest path. Previously, the oldest-known figurative art was found in a nearby cave, Leang Bulu’Sipong, discovered by the same team. Announced in late 2019, that 43,900-year-old work depicts eight figures with weapons in hand approaching wild pigs and small native buffaloes. Some archaeologists believe that red markings, created 73,000 years ago, found in a South African cave in 2018 represents the world’s first found drawings. In a another case, 64,000-year-old cave paintings believed to be made by Neanderthals were discovered in Spain in 2018.

Give’em A Raspberry THIS VALENTINE’S DAY, PUT THIS VERSATILE MOJITO RECIPE TO WORK WITH OR WITHOUT ALCOHOL INGREDIENTS • • • • • • •

3-4 fresh raspberries plus garnish 5-6 mint leaves 2 tablespoons simple syrup Ice 1/4 cup raspberry or cran-raspberry juice 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice (approximately 1/2 medium lime) 1/2 cup club soda or sparkling mineral water

INSTRUCTIONS 1. To make a simple syrup, combine 1 cup granulated sugar with 1 cup water (or just equal parts, if making more or less) in a medium sauce pan. Heat over medium heat, stirring frequently, until sugar is completely dissolved. Allow to cool. 2. In a tall glass, add raspberries, mint leaves and the simple syrup. Muddle (squish with the back of a wooden spoon) well until the mint, simple syrup and raspberries are well-combined.

Biking Access Frisco’s New Interactive ‘Story Map’ 26

Frisco residents and visitors have a new way to fall in love with the city's popular hike-and-bike trails. A new, mobile-friendly Frisco Trails Story Map was created, using the city’s geographic information system technology, to showcase the city's nature-based assets. The map highlights the top 10 trails in Frisco, with specifics on several walking loops and a link to the city’s complete Hike and Bike Master Plan. Chris Shuma, a Frisco GIS analyst, says the map is a collaborative project between information technology, parks and recreation, and engineering department employees. The goal was to create an easy-touse tool for the public to see what walking routes are near them, he shares. “As you scroll through it, it’ll basically drive itself for you,” he adds. By clicking over the trails included in the map, users can see reveal the trails' names, entries, length and hyperlinks to the city’s website. Chris says they also included some details about where future trails are likely to be. Information on public art also included on the map, alongside details on restrooms, benches, drinking fountains, pavilions, traffic signals, bike lanes, bike stands and bike repair stations. "If you're curious even more about the public art, maybe to see it more visually, you can thumb through each public art and see it on the map with a write-up on each one," adds Chris. A fellow Frisco GIS analyst, Charlotte Stockard, says the parks-specific portion of the map has a popup that takes users to the city's Parks and Recreation website. "You can also filter by different types of parks, and get a list of all parks," she adds. The new map also can help with all those New Year's resolutions about getting more exercise! When there is a correction (a drop of 10% or more), people generally stay on the sidelines or sell their stocks, fearing the market may collapse and stay lower—there have been over 100 corrections, usually about one per year, and they have all ended with a full recovery. Some of these corrections turn into bear markets, a drop of 20% or more, and all have ended with a full recovery. On the other end of the spectrum, many are worried about investing when the market is at an all-time high. This is actually completely normal and happens about once every 19 days—in other words, all the time! We aren’t surprised when a Hershey’s bar, box of cereal or ticket to Disney World costs more, but somehow are shocked when the market hits an all-time high. In many ways, it feels like we are For those with a 401(k), Mallouk says to do everything you can to contribute. “Some 401(k) plans have an employer match, meaning for every dollar you put into the 401(k), the company will match—it usually applies to the first 3%. It’s a guaranteed 100% rate of return, and there is just nothing else you can do that is going to be as good as that. If you have the ability to contribute the max, do that as well, but for sure take advantage of the match.” When faced with the choice to either invest or pay off debts first, Mallouk says to start with focusing on the interest rate. “All debts aren’t created equal—if you have credit card debt where you are paying 10% or more in interest, then paying off the debt before doing anything else other than a 401(k) match is the way to go. If your only debt is a home mortgage at 2-4% or so, then investing over a long period of time is very likely to yield you a far better outcome than making extra debt payments.” When planning an estate, it’s crucial to have a healthcare and financial power of attorney and a will or trust. “A healthcare power of attorney names someone to make healthcare decisions for you in the event you can’t make them for yourself. A financial power of attorney names someone to make financial decisions for you if you can’t for yourself. Lastly a will or a trust both name who will handle things for you in the event of your death, and who will oversee and inherit your assets. A trust tends to make more sense for wealthier individuals as it can bypass the probate court system, which keeps things private, allows for a faster transfer of assets after death, and because it skips the court system, settling the estate is much less expensive.” When looking for a financial advisor, find the right one by asking the right questions. “Most don’t realize that the vast majority of financial advisors don’t have to act in the client’s best interests. A minority of financial advisors are fiduciaries and operate under laws that share similarities with doctors and lawyers, meaning they do have to act in their client’s best interests. First, ask your advisor if they are registered as a broker or are dually registered. If they say yes to either, that means that part or all of the time, they don’t have to act in your

just at the starting line.”

best interests. There are thousands of advisors that will act in your best interest, so take the time to find one. Second, ask your advisor if their parent company, or the ownership of their parent company, own investment vehicles. If the answer is yes, don’t be surprised if some of those investment vehicles find their way into your portfolio. Essentially you may find yourself paying an advisor to then put you in a fund where the company collects another fee. There is no need to accept this conflict. Find a fiduciary that is not dually registered and that does not own their own investment products. At that point, you at least have someone that is incented to act on your behalf all the time. From there, look for education, credentials and experience with people like you.” As for the future, it’s never looked brighter at Creative Planning. “It’s an exciting time—we can do more for our clients today than at any point in our history.
