NTPA Announces New Frisco Managing Director The new managing director of North Texas Performing Arts for its Frisco Theatre operations, Kerry Murdock, is a Frisco resident with deep ties to the North Texas community. palms and garden center When Leo and Caroline Yruegas launched North Texas Palms & Pottery in 2006, they rented a permanent spot on the McKinney Trade Days property. For more than 15 years, this location served them well. However, because the property was sold in 2021, the couple needed to find a new location. They bought an 8-acre lot in McKinney at 3565 FM1461 that previously was a horse farm, and during this October, are celebrating their one-year location anniversary. Their retail and wholesale nursery provides cold hardy palms, Bermuda sod, fruit trees, Homeowners Association-approved shrubs, shade and ornamental trees, flowers, drought-tolerant plants, firewood, chemical products, eye-catching pottery and holiday/Christmas decorations. "The new property enables us to have more greenhouses and grow our own annuals and perennials,” Leo says.

Various types of palm trees, all suited for North Texas weather conditions, are available, confirms Caroline. Routinely, they carry the following unique cold hardy palms: California Fan; Florida Sabal; Mediterranean/ European Fan; Pindo; Texas Sabal; and Windmill. The palms range from 1 foot to 16 feet tall and are priced from $45 to $1,500. She says they also carry Live Oaks, Red Oaks and other traditional landscape items. Fun Fact: Texas has two native palm trees that grow in the wild, the Mexican palmetto (Sabal Mexicana) and the dwarf palmetto (Sabal minor). CONTINUED >

Jackie Lyles, the nursery's general manager, says their fall anniversary special will be a free pumpkin with every three, 10-inch mum plants purchased. "We'll be transitioning into Christmas lawn art repairs and winterization of trees and plants. We'll also have expanded Mexican pottery selections, fountains and bird baths," she says. A significant announcement is that the nursery team is introducing its own brand of palm food. "We worked all summer on creating a specially formulated food, with the assistance of fertilizing experts at Nelson Plant Food," Jackie reveals. North Texas Palms & Pottery staffers also repair Christmas mini-light yard decorations and holiday lights for homeowners. "Light up your yard with an array of beautiful Christmas décor. From light-up nativity scenes to trains to reindeer, we can do it all," proclaims Leo. Randy’s Blackberry Filet Mignon

Frisco's oldest family-owned restaurant is still known for providing impeccable meals along with memorable dining experiences. Randy Burks, owner/chef of Randy’s Steakhouse, began his culinary career in 1986 working for Dale Wamstadt at Del Frisco’s Prime Steakhouse. By 1993, he had the opportunity to open his own eatery, Randy’s Country Kitchen. By 1995, he established his current, first-class steakhouse at 7026 Main St., with an extensive wine list. "I started at Del Frisco’s as a server, but soon found that my true calling was in the kitchen. Dale trained me in all aspects of kitchen management, as well as how to prepare the finest steaks and seafood. I learned the precise art of being a sous chef, then was promoted to head chef and finally to kitchen manager. I enjoyed those years immensely," Randy recalls. After preparing comfort foods, Randy says he realized he missed cooking sizzling, signature steaks to be served with fine wines. "So when Mrs. Vivian McCallum put her beautiful, old Victorian-style house on the market, which was just a few blocks about from Randy's Country Kitchen, I purchased this historic home with the intention of transforming it into a prime steakhouse." Formally known as the T.J. Campbell house, Randy's current location was built in 1869 during the cattle drives

traveling north. Preston Road was part of the Shawnee Trail, over which trail drives took herds of cattle to northern markets. In 1902, the railroad came through Collin County and the city of Frisco was established. In 1903, Mr. Campbell moved the house to the current location on Main Street in Frisco. The house was moved from the original location on what's now Preston Road by oxen pulling it on logs. The house was constructed from lumber hauled by wagon trains from Jefferson, Texas.

During the transformation, Randy says they took the utmost care to preserve the historical aura that the McCallum family had given their home. Specials are routinely offered in Randie’s Lounge (named after Randy’s daughter) from 5-7 p.m. on weekday evenings for half-price cocktails and wines as well as a bar food menu, such as spicy buffalo chicken wings, cheeseburgers, beef empanadas, tamales, prime rib sandwich, beef filet nachos, grilled chicken sandwich, loaded French fries and bruschetta. "Guests rave about our blackberry filet, a tender filet mignon with a blackberry red wine sauce, as well as our 20-ounce Australian lobster tail broiled and served with hot melted butter. And we complement our incredible dishes with a selection of 150 wines from around the world," says Randy. Other entrées include dishes such as beef tournedos, prime rib, crab cakes, Parmesan crusted tilapia, lamb chops, filet mignon, baby back ribs, chicken marsala, salmon filet, crab legs, scallops and pork chops with a bourbon peach glaze. Dessert choices are bread pudding with Jack Daniels sauce, fudgy chocolate mousse, key lime pie and crème brûlée with raspberry sauce.

Randy says their wine dinners are popular. That fivecourse meal includes Randy's hors d'oeuvres and wine pairing, a first course and wine pairing, a second course and wine pairing, an entrée and a dessert. CT Provisions, located in downtown McKinney at 205 W. Louisiana St., has defied odds since opening during the COVID-19 pandemic. Given that the National Restaurant Association estimates a 30% failure rate in the restaurant industry, that means one in three restaurants won’t survive their first year. CT Provisions has not only been surviving, but its team is also thriving. “Despite all the reasons why we should not be, here we are,” says Steven Terry, CT Provisions owner and general manager. “We did not receive any PPP or COVID assistance money, we do not have a wealthy financial backer, although Jeff Taylor, proprietor, has stood behind us every step of the way. We have survived and succeeded on a nickel and dime budget, and a lot of luck, sweat and hard work.” As the nation emerges from the pandemic, there are new obstacles facing restaurants. It's estimated that restaurants with a price point between $25 and $35 business are down 35%. Steven equates shifting business to face this new hurdle to being in a band. “CT Provisions is like my little band that can. I am always having to be creative and think of different ways to make things work. Sometimes you just have to go out there and keep playing your song over and over until someone hears it,” he says. Hard work has paid off. CT Provisions recently was given love by Eater Magazine, being listed as one of the 38 Essential Restaurants in the Dallas area and 11 Essential McKinney Restaurants. Culture Maps listed CT Provisions as a place to go in the 18 most livable cities in the United States.

From its décor to its menu, everything at CT Provisions is handcrafted. The menu is inspired by the idea of simple and honest cooking where guests will enjoy a dining experience featuring fresh and sustainable ingredients. Each dish is mouthwatering and unforgettable, giving guests a dining experience like no other. Guests come from all over the Metroplex to eat the restaurant’s PEI (Prince Edward Island Seafood) oysters. Equal to the food, CT Provisions is also making a name for itself for its creative vision behind the bar, headed by bar manager and owner Matt Walker. From Japanese whiskey and fine wine to carefully crafted drinks that complement each dish, the menu behind the bar is incredible. “Matt Walker is like a walking encyclopedia behind the bar,” says Steven. “Everything he crafts will knock your socks off.” CT Provisions highlights an aperitif and oyster hour Tuesday through Friday from 2-5 p.m. and dinner Tuesday through Saturday from 5-10 p.m., in addition to a Sunday brunch from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Three nights a week the restaurant has special bar offerings from open to close. Each Tuesday is $8 classic cocktails and first responder night. Whiskey Wednesdays give $5 off any whiskey, and Thursdays are half-priced bottle wine night. FRISCO AND DFW "Many times individuals who've been hurt due to domestic violence are forced to start over in a new home with only the clothes on their backs and little to nothing else. Our Purple Ribbon Mission of LatterHouse Decor is to provide no-cost interior decorating services to those women and families," explains Shalonda. She says the objective of the organization's decorators, photographers, movers and other professionals is to assist the families in turning their new houses into real homes by assessing their needs and doing all they can to fulfill their wishlist. "We furnish and decorate these homes with donations from all over, having to spend little to no money out-ofpocket. Our design team is phenomenal and brings all of the beautiful donations together effortlessly and seamlessly, creating a beautiful, comforting and peaceful space for our clients." Shalonda assures, "We strive to give hope and beauty to those rising from the ashes of a dark time in their lives." October is an especially important time for LatterHouse because it's designated as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, which reflects both physical and emotional abuse. Green Thumb Volunteers Provide ‘Spirit Of Hope And Community’ ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON St. Arbor Garden represents more than food for thought. This nonprofit group reflects doing for others through fortifying food. Volunteers for this charitable organization indicate they unite efforts to serve as a refuge of hope and love within the community of Frisco, Little Elm and the Colony. Founded by New Life Community Church Pastor James Hutchins, the nonprofit's board of directors and supporters operate a halfacre, community organic farm at 25631 Smotherman Road in Frisco. "Sixty percent of recent food insecure individuals in North Texas were employed, according to the North Texas Food Bank. That's another reason we've become an advocate to diminish food insecurity in Collin and Denton Counties," says Michel Hambrick, St. Arbor board president. She says they're driven by a mission to enhance opportunities for healthy, nutritious food resources, community engagement

events and to ignite hope in Denton and Collin Counties’ poorest residents. "By investing in improving the lives of our neighbors, we're all richer by developing lasting relationships, compassion and tolerance," she adds. St. Arbor volunteers currently assist in two major ways: • St. Arbor Community Garden is a collaborative effort with the Texas A&M AgriLife program through the Denton County Master Gardener Association, the Little Elm ISD Horticulture Program and the Little Elm Rotary. They grow organic fruits and vegetables, and offer nutritional classes to focus on canning and preserving fruits and vegetables. • The Torii and Katrina Hunter Special Event Center provides nearly 8,000 square feet as a community facility available for weddings, corporate events, family gatherings and private celebrations. seminars, workshops, and life skills training also is conducted there, along with college readiness, STEM Programs and tutoring to strengthen higher education and employment options for local youth."Gardening doesn't have to be intimidating or overly complicated. If there's a willingness to learn, half the battle's already over," adds Beth Johnson, St. Arbor administrator. Up to half of the vegetables raised in the St. Arbor Garden are donated to local food banks. In the past, Beth says the group hosted a Farmer’s Market to offer residents the opportunity to purchase at low or no cost, fresh produce and to learn home gardening tips for

container gardening. She reminds that fresh, healthy produce can help reduce adult diabetes rates (Denton County is 8.5%) and adult obesity rate (Denton County 28.4%); low-income preschool obesity rate (Denton County 13.8%).
