A Kerrville family of nine with a storied history shares their escape from the Guadalupe River floods.

Penny Deupree is the great-granddaughter of legendary author Frances Hodgson Burnett, who penned the novel A Little Princess in 1905 and The Secret Garden in 1911. Burnett’s stories have become classics and have stood the test of time. But after the July 4th flood in Hunt, Penny and her family found remaining books from Burnett in the rubble. Reflecting on the night that destroyed her home, Deupree tells of a moment when personal survival was all that mattered. The house was full of nine family members at the time, including a one-year-old and Penny’s three-year-old great-grandchild. Somehow, everyone made it to safety, an outcome she says was nothing short of a miracle.

THE STORM

In the early morning of July 4th, Penny’s son Tad Deupree woke to water from the Guadalupe River rushing into his mother’s home. Tad and Penny rushed to wake the other seven family members. But they soon found it impossible to escape through any doors on the first floor as water rushed around them. Instead, all nine ascended a ladder to an upstairs loft, hoping for safe ground. Tad found a decorative buoy from a lobster cage that the family began using as a battering ram to break through the upstairs wall of the house in hopes of escaping the home. After 20 minutes

of desperate pounding, the family created an 18-inch hole, just wide enough for each person to slip through. Once outside, the family waded into deadly waters, but were able to grip the home’s gutters and climb onto the roof. There, they spent the next two hours wondering what might happen next. “I just knew we were going to get out. I mean, there was no other option,” Penny remembers. In those furious and desperate moments, Penny says her attitude was clear and simple: “Don’t ever give up. And say a lot of prayers.” During their time on the roof, surrounded by storms and lightning, family members sang to the young children to help them fall asleep. A bright light broke through the darkness from a neighbor who heard their cries on the roof. Penny instructed the neighbor to get a ladder near her garage. But Penny recalls, “He came back after he looked for it and said, ‘There is no garage.’” CONTINUED >

THE AFTERMATH

Like many families along the Guadalupe River, the Deupree family found themselves digging through debris and managing the remains of a house ravaged by water. “We have three kids and seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren,” Penny says, “and I’m telling you, all the children have been down here taking their turn helping us through the litter that’s all around the property.” Hundreds of households along the Guadalupe have been trying to clean up and heal, especially around Hunt, the small community hit hardest by the floodwaters. The area’s destruction didn’t spare Camp Mystic and Heart of the Hills—both youth camps—which experienced some of the greatest loss of the flood tragedy, including the deaths of several young children. That’s a fact not lost on Penny. “I’m grateful that the list of missing is going down,” Penny says. CONTINUED >

Penny says her attitude was clear and simple: “DON’T EVER GIVE UP. AND SAY A LOT OF “And I hurt so much that all these kids, and anybody who was killed by this, was just…well, we were lucky.” Penny believes that her family now consists of nine walking miracles. When asked why they survived, she credits only God and a lot of prayer. “God was with us every second of the way. And we are a prayerful family,” Penny declares. “You can’t question what’s going on. We made it, and that’s all that matters.” Because of the miracle of their survival, Penny hopes to keep sharing their story—perhaps carrying on the legacy of her great-grandmother. “I know that people need to hear it. God was at work the whole time. He was pretty busy that night.”

LIVING STYLE THE INTERSECTION OF FASHION AND HOME

IN

this unexpected love affair, fashion and interiors are more than just a simple pairing—they are rooted in culture, creativity, and the human desire for self-expression. As conscious consumers of the 21st century, participating in a retail landscape that is oversaturated and struggling to adapt to the ever-changing demands of the modern customer, our purchasing power should not only respond to a feeling of want but also prioritize items that reflect who we are and who we aspire to be. This is clearly visible through the representation of fashion and interiors. Although we tend to consider cost-per-wear primarily when it comes to clothing, this same principle applies to furniture and the function it brings to the home. Aesthetics and functionality both play a role in this pairing, painting a picture for the rest of the world of who the wearer is and how they live in their space. The woman who wears a blazer with sharp shoulders that makes her feel powerful in her everyday life—or the black dress that gives her a necessary boost of confidence—may naturally gravitate toward sleek, modern furniture that feels equally strong and elevates the space where the modern woman thrives.

18

FASH ION F OR WA R D | L I F E + CU LT U RE

In the same way, someone who prefers an effortless ensemble—like their favorite white T-shirt and comfortable denim jeans—may also look for home pieces that are functional and make their guests feel at ease. Even a handmade rug, one that sparks conversation about where it was found and adds a focal point to a room, mirrors how we search our closets for a sweater tied to a cherished memory. Just as we carefully choose outfits to express ourselves, it’s equally important to ensure that our living spaces are designed

with the same intention. More than ever, modern buyers are making purchasing decisions based on personal morals and values, forming a new wave of consumers who seek products that are both high-quality and environmentally or socially conscious, whether for themselves or their homes. The following imagery affirms that living a timeless lifestyle across all aspects of life is possible through the thoughtful styling of sustainable clothing and vintage furniture. As the modern retail landscape continues to evolve, it’s become increasingly vital to make conscious consumer choices—ones that allow us to express our truest selves through both our wardrobes and the places we call home.

OLD WALL, NEW TRICKS HANG UP THE OLD WAY AND TRY A GALLERY WALL HANGING SYSTEM IN YOUR HOME.

ARTICLE BY PAM REID

One of my happy places is sitting in front of a museum wall gallery. I can admire art for hours, and if I’m with a friend, there’s no telling how long we’ll sit, reflect, and share our individual perspectives. If you’ve admired gallery wall displays in magazines, catalogs, or on social media and would like to create one in your home, it’s much easier than you might think.

WHY CHOOSE A GALLERY WALL HANGING SYSTEM? The beauty of a gallery wall hanging system lies in its flexibility and ease of use. Traditional picture hanging methods can leave walls full of holes, making it cumbersome to adjust placements or update the display. A hanging system, however, allows for easy adjustments without additional damage to your walls. This feature is particularly advantageous for renters or anyone who likes to refresh their decor frequently.

DESIGNING YOUR GALLERY WALL The first step in creating a gallery wall is planning. Start by selecting a theme or color scheme that complements your space. Themes can be as varied as black-and-white photographs, abstract paintings, or a mix of personal and artistic prints.

MATERIALS YOU WILL NEED: • A gallery wall hanging system, which typically includes mounting rails, cables or rods, and hooks. You can find them pretty much anywhere, online or at your local home improvement store. • A collection of frames and artwork. • A level, measuring tape, and perhaps a laser pointer for precision.

20 M UST SE E | HO M E + DESIGN

CONTINUED >

INSTALL ATION TIPS: CREATIVE ARRANGEMENTS • The arrangement of your gallery wall can follow several patterns, depending on your taste: • Linear: Artworks are hung in a straight line at eye level, creating a clean and orderly appearance. • Grid: Perfect for a collection of similarly sized frames, this layout emphasizes structure and uniformity. • Salon Style: This more traditional arrangement involves layering pieces closely together, often extending across the wall. It’s ideal for creating a rich, filled look. Enjoy curating a space that is uniquely yours, evolving with your tastes and lifestyle.

01

MEASURE YOUR SPACE:

Carefully measure the wall space where you want to install the gallery. Consider the height and width available, keeping in mind furniture and other room features.

02

LAY IT OUT:

Arrange your artwork on the floor to finalize your layout. This “dry run” is crucial to get a feel for how the pieces will interact with one another. I like to use painter’s tape to create a visual of what my display will look like on the walls.

03

INSTALL THE RAILS AND HANG YOUR ART:

Following the manufacturer’s instructions, mount the rails at the top of your wall. Ensure they are level and securely attached. Attach cables or rods to the rails, then use hooks to hang your frames. The beauty of the system is that you can adjust the height and position of each piece easily.

04

BALANCE AND SYMMETRY:

Step back to view your layout from different angles. Adjust the spacing and alignment as needed to achieve visual balance.

Signor's new tasting room on Orange Street

Nestled in downtown Fredericksburg awaits the newest elevated wine experience fused with a historical landmark. The Patton Home, located at 107 North Orange Avenue, is now intertwined with the elegant landscape charm of Signor Vineyards, a signature essence also found on US Highway 290. The Patton Home, a four-room limestone house built in 1880, housed Fredericksburg business leader Albert Lee Patton and his family's descendants until it sold in 1976. It now entails an intimate food and wine experience led by the talented Signor chef and sommelier team. The parlor welcomes diners with a perfectly appointed historic flair of antiques and chandeliers. Each room offers exquisite service by trained professionals. Yet, if wanting their signature outdoor experience, the courtyard shines in grandeur with a perfectly landscaped ambiance crafted by Clay Signor, entrepreneur and owner of Signor Vineyards. "My passion for landscaping stems from the long history of my family's Texas history,” said Signor. “I was groomed by my great-grandfather, Edward Teas, a nationally renowned horticulturist and arborist. Mr. Teas and company planted over a million of the glorious oak trees that still define the look and feel of Houston and Austin". What captures my sommelier eye is the careful attention to an elevated experience. Not only can one taste award-winning wines from Texas and Oregon, but guests are guided through food and wine explorations led by trained sommeliers. Expect artisan wines paired with seasonal flatbreads and fabulous charcuterie boards, all surrounded by the Patton House’s rich history.

RECOMMENDED WINES

The 2023 Signor Vineyards "Rogue Valley" Grenache Rosé is a delicate expression of grenache with perfect balance of lovely raspberry fruit, bright acidity, and restraining alcohol. The 2023 Signor Vineyards “Frieson Vineyard” Cabernet Franc, Texas High Plains is a blockbuster, loaded with power, yet elegant in texture. The aroma is packed with layers of blueberries, sensuous violets and black cherries. Tannins are built for aging, although seamless when drank early. The finish is long and expansive with integrated French oak that guides the palate throughout.

JERRILYNNE CLIFFORD’S ZUCCHINI WITH PEPITAS ARTICLE BY JERRILYNNE CLIFFORD PHOTOGRAPHY BY EDIT CRABTREE

Hill Country Bon Vivant founder shares tasty treat

My favorite part of Summer is definitely the produce. Bushels of zucchini, summer squash, and tomatoes are everywhere. When I was a cooking instructor at a local cooking school, I was tasked with creating a Hill Country summer meal. The surprising touch of heat from the jelly, the saltiness of the cotija cheese and crunch of the pepitas make it a delightful dish. If you can’t find cotija cheese, you can add a finely crumbled feta or goat cheese.

JERRILYNNE CLIFFORD JerriLynne Clifford is founder and owner of Hill Country Bon Vivant. Her story, blog and services can be found at hillcountrybonvivant.com. Her cookbook, soon to be released, is titled The Vineyard Table: Cooking, Wine and Stories of Hospitality.

Charred Lemon Juice: • 1-2 fresh lemons and 1 tbsp olive oil. Slice the lemon in half and lightly brush with olive oil. Place on a hot skillet or grill and sear until blackened. Use a citrus press and squeeze juice out of both sides. Repeat with second lemon if necessary.
