LIFESTYLE LETTER

The Style Edition Dear Reader, I hope this letter finds you inspired and ready to embrace the beauty of self-expression. Style is such an extraordinary part of life—it’s far more than the clothes we wear or the accessories we choose. Style is woven into every detail of our existence, from the way we decorate our homes to the art and music we enjoy, the books we read and even how we interact with the world around us. It’s a unique thread that helps create the tapestry of who we are. What makes style so captivating is its deeply personal nature. It grows and changes alongside us as we explore new interests, embrace our quirks and express what we value most. It’s a language without words, a powerful tool for connection that can bridge differences and spark shared understanding. Here in Frederick, we’re fortunate to have endless opportunities to celebrate and explore style. Whether it’s through visiting local boutiques, supporting creative entrepreneurs or simply drawing inspiration from our community’s vibrant culture, there’s so much to ignite your creativity and lift your spirit. This month, I encourage you to think of style as an authentic expression of yourself. The most beautiful style is one that reflects who you truly are—your passions, your story, your individuality. And the incredible thing is that no one else in the world can replicate that. So go ahead, celebrate YOUR style. Whether you’re exploring new trends, blending classic elements or creating something entirely original, let this edition inspire you to embrace the power of self-expression. Here’s to being uniquely and beautifully you! Cheers!

Beyond the Trend STYLE, SUBSTANCE & SELF-EXPRESSION Fashion may speak in seasons, but style? That’s personal. It’s how we show the world who we are—quietly or boldly, with structure or spontaneity. And it’s rarely dictated by the runway, because we are so much more than a passing trend. More than ever, we’re choosing quality over quantity. Local over mass-produced. Crafted over disposable. We’re asking deeper questions—where was this made, who made it and will it still feel like me a year or even a decade from now? Gone are the days of chasing every new drop. Instead, curating with intention—building wardrobes that fit well, feel good and mean something. At the heart of this shift are the makers, creatives and curators redefining what it means to get dressed. For them, personal style isn’t something to follow—it’s something to claim with confidence, care and a deep respect for the stories we choose to wear. CONTINUED >

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START YOUR BRAND?

Back in the early to mid-2000s, I became a buyer for a local streetwear store in downtown Frederick. As I started working with different brands, I noticed something— almost everything we carried came out of either New York or LA. There was nothing that truly represented Maryland, especially not in the way I envisioned. That realization sparked something in me. I wanted to fill that void and create something that spoke to Maryland, specifically Frederick. That’s what inspired me to start my own brand.

Classic and effortless.

DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE USING A MOVIE, SONG OR FICTIONAL CHARACTER.

If I had to describe my style in a movie, The 1983 film Wild Style, captures true NYC street fashion.

WHAT’S ONE FASHION TREND YOU’RE LOVING RIGHT NOW—AND ONE YOU HOPE NEVER COMES BACK?

I’m not big on fashion trends—I’m more drawn to timeless style than fleeting fashion.

WHAT ARE THREE WARDROBE STAPLES YOU BELIEVE ARE WORTH INVESTING IN?

A well-fitted blazer that pairs effortlessly with both jeans and trousers, styled with a crisp white Oxford shirt and a great pair of loafers.

“In an age where disposability is rampant, MADE BY FRED stands out by offering rugged, high-quality products that embody the spirit of Frederick: a city rooted in grit, progress and history.”

WHAT’S ONE SIMPLE STYLE TIP THAT CAN INSTANTLY ELEVATE AN EVERYDAY OUTFIT?

Layers! Add a button up, keeping it unbuttoned on top of your white tee.

WHAT’S THE MOST SURPRISING OR FUN ITEM IN YOUR WARDROBE OR STUDIO?

The most surprising item in my wardrobe would probably be my camo Crocs, lol!

WHERE IN THE DMV AREA DO YOU LOVE TO SHOP OR GET INSPIRED?

I’ve always had a deep appreciation for thrift and antique stores. Discovering Made in the USA apparel is especially meaningful to me, as many of the techniques and machinery once used to craft items like T-shirts and jackets are no longer in use. There’s a distinct level of craftsmanship and history in those pieces that’s increasingly rare today.

“You don’t need more clothes to feel good, just the good ones on repeat. Your vibe is amazing, stop spending energy and money chasing someone else’s.”

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START YOUR BRAND OR PLATFORM?

In 2018, I realized I needed sewing friends—so I posted on Nextdoor. A few lovely locals responded and we started stitching together. Then COVID hit. To keep the spirit alive, I launched a Facebook group (“Frederick Sewing”) and created the “traveling box”—a heavy bin of unwanted supplies that rotated from house to house like a crafty Santa drop. In May 2020, I had my COVID baby, hit a breaking point and quit my career without a plan—just the gut feeling that I wanted to teach sewing and somehow make it sustainable. I started with kitchen-table classes, then moved into a tiny Pepto-pink room in Frederick MADE and eventually landed inside Give Rise Studio, where things really took off after one 5 a.m. Facebook post sold out my classes in a day. Thanks to community support (and a few happy tears), I now have my own dream studio and a growing team of amazing instructors. It hasn’t been without hard lessons as money doesn’t always money—but I keep going. My advice? Define your values early and stick to them. Put your real self out there—your people will find you.

WHAT’S YOUR FASHION PHILOSOPHY IN ONE SENTENCE?

Trends are totally made up and confidence comes from finding your own personal style—so wear fewer, high-quality pieces on repeat that feel good, fit well and show off your favorite version of you!

That’s Sew Hillary @thats.sew.hillary WHAT’S ONE FASHION TREND YOU’RE LOVING RIGHT NOW—AND ONE YOU HOPE NEVER COMES BACK?

I love seeing more of us investing in higher-quality clothing and starting to think twice about the true cost of buying cheap pieces we’ll only wear once—or grabbing something just because it’s too cheap not to buy. Also, I hope ultra low rise jeans solidly stay in the late 90s/early 2000s.

WHAT ARE THREE WARDROBE STAPLES YOU BELIEVE ARE WORTH INVESTING IN?

Good quality denim! It will last you so much longer and won’t stretch out and get weird over time. An easy-to-wear top that goes with any bra (or braless) that you know you can throw on and feel great in when decision fatigue is taking over! A fairly neutral dress or jumpsuit that can be dressed up or down.

WHAT’S ONE SIMPLE STYLE TIP THAT CAN INSTANTLY ELEVATE AN EVERYDAY OUTFIT?

Don’t be scared to be loud or mix and match items in a way you never have before. Just grab what’s clean and throw it on and wear it with confidence! Also, dry shampoo.

WHAT’S YOUR ADVICE FOR SOMEONE TRYING TO DEVELOP CONFIDENCE IN THEIR STYLE?

Stop looking at what everyone else is wearing. You don’t want to be them, you want to be you. What fits, fabrics or colors make you feel genuinely happy when you look in the mirror? What styles do you actually feel comfortable in. If a store doesn’t have anything that speaks to you, maybe your taste is just better than the buyer’s. (Because honestly? It probably is.) If you need to get a little cocky and remind yourself that you’re above the trends—go for it. You totally are. Make your own vibe. Photos by Ashley Jayde Photography

Barnette Holston

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START YOUR BRAND OR PLATFORM?

My parents are my biggest influences. My dad was meticulous—he polished his shoes every Saturday and invested in just a few timeless pieces. My mom was a true fashionista with sayings like, “Don’t buy it if there is a lot on the rack, everyone will have it,” and “Cheap shoes ruin a fit.” She loved dressing up and accessorizing—I get a lot of my style from her, though she’d deny it.

WHAT’S YOUR FASHION PHILOSOPHY IN ONE SENTENCE? You too can be a fool for fashion!

DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE USING A MOVIE, SONG OR FICTIONAL CHARACTER.

I like to think my style is that of Stanley Tucci in Devil Wears Prada mixed with James Bond.

WHAT’S ONE FASHION TREND YOU’RE LOVING RIGHT NOW—AND ONE YOU HOPE NEVER COMES BACK?

I love wide-legged pants and hope skinny jeans never come back!

WHAT ARE THREE WARDROBE STAPLES YOU BELIEVE ARE WORTH INVESTING IN?

A good watch, a crisp white shirt and an excellent tailor.

WHAT’S ONE SIMPLE STYLE TIP THAT CAN INSTANTLY ELEVATE AN EVERYDAY OUTFIT?

Make sure your clothes are well tailored. A good tailor can make even the most inexpensive clothes look terrific.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START YOUR BRAND OR PLATFORM?

I had worked in the retail makeup industry in NYC for most of my career and then took a job working for a luxury baby skincare company. I missed being around all the makeup and fashion everyday so I began my blog as a creative outlet. I wanted to talk about these things and find others who were just as obsessed as I am!

WHAT’S YOUR FASHION PHILOSOPHY IN ONE SENTENCE? Dress for yourself.

DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE USING A FICTIONAL CHARACTER.

A mix of all the Sex and the City characters in one.

WHAT’S ONE FASHION TREND YOU’RE LOVING RIGHT NOW—AND ONE YOU HOPE NEVER COMES BACK?

I’m loving the jelly sandal trend! So fun and takes me back to my childhood. Sadly, barrel leg jeans are a hard no for me.

WHAT ARE THREE WARDROBE STAPLES YOU BELIEVE ARE WORTH INVESTING IN?

A great pair of jeans that you feel confident in, a simple but well-made button-down blouse and neutral ballet flats.

WHAT’S ONE SIMPLE STYLE TIP THAT CAN INSTANTLY ELEVATE AN EVERYDAY OUTFIT?

Do your hair or your makeup. You don’t necessarily have to do both but do at least one to always look put together.

WHAT’S YOUR ADVICE FOR SOMEONE TRYING TO DEVELOP CONFIDENCE IN THEIR STYLE?

Focus less on trends and more on classic pieces.

WHAT’S YOUR GO-TO OUTFIT WHEN YOU WANT TO FEEL UNSTOPPABLE? All black with bold accessories.

S t yle in Small Dose s The Micro-Moments That Make Life More Beautiful

In a world obsessed with grand gestures and dramatic transformations, a quiet revolution is taking place in the margins of our daily lives. While social media feeds overflow with complete room makeovers and capsule wardrobe overhauls, the most profound style shifts are happening in spaces so small you might miss them entirely. Micro-style is rewriting the rules of how we think about beauty, design and personal expression. Unlike the intimidating world of major renovations or seasonal wardrobe purges, micro-style thrives in the tender details. It’s the deliberate choice to replace generic drawer pulls with vintage brass ones or the decision to display your morning vitamins in a small ceramic dish instead of leaving them scattered on the counter. These aren’t accidents—they’re intentional acts of beauty that compound into something larger than their individual parts. What makes micro-style so compelling is its accessibility. You don’t need a trust fund or a team of designers to transform the quality of your daily experience. A single well-chosen object can shift the entire energy of a space. Consider the difference

between charging your phone on a cluttered nightstand versus a dedicated wooden tray or how replacing harsh overhead lighting with a single warm table lamp can make an entire room feel like a sanctuary. The psychology behind micro-style goes beyond appearance. These small changes create what researchers call “micro-restorative experiences”—quick moments that help reset your mind and ease daily stress. When you notice something beautiful in an unexpected spot, it gives your brain a chance to pause and refocus on the little things and the beauty of intentional design. This shift reflects a growing understanding that sustainable living comes from investing in fewer, better things. Instead of constantly buying more, it’s about being intentional with what we already own and how we showcase it—favoring curation over accumulation and purpose over impulse. The beauty of small, intentional changes is how they build on each other. Place a single vase of fresh flowers on the table and suddenly you want to swap paper napkins for linen. That simple upgrade inspires you to polish your glassware—and just like that, an ordinary dinner feels like an occasion. CONTINUED >

Professional designers have long understood this principle. They know that the difference between a good room and a great one often comes down to the details most people overlook—the way books are arranged, the height of artwork, the texture of throw pillows. Microstyle democratizes this knowledge, making design thinking accessible to anyone willing to slow down and pay attention. Perhaps most importantly, micro-style is deeply personal. While major design trends come and go, the small touches that make your space uniquely yours tend to endure. The small ceramic tile you brought back from Italy and now use as a coaster, the way you display postcards from past adventures in a simple wooden frame, the handwoven basket from that market you visited on a day trip that holds your throw blankets—these choices create a signature that’s entirely your own.

In our hyperconnected, fast-paced world, you have permission to find joy in the smallest details. Beauty doesn’t require a grand budget or dramatic gesture and sometimes the most profound transformations happen one tiny, thoughtful choice at a time. The revolution isn’t just happening in showrooms or magazine spreads. It’s happening in the quiet corners of everyday life, where small acts of intention create spaces that don’t just look beautiful—they feel like home.

OLD WALL, NEW TRICKS HANG UP THE OLD WAY AND TRY A GALLERY WALL HANGING SYSTEM IN YOUR HOME.

ARTICLE BY PAM REID

One of my happy places is sitting in front of a museum wall gallery. I can admire art for hours, and if I’m with a friend, there’s no telling how long we’ll sit, reflect, and share our individual perspectives. If you’ve admired gallery wall displays in magazines, catalogs, or on social media and would like to create one in your home, it’s much easier than you might think.

WHY CHOOSE A GALLERY WALL HANGING SYSTEM? The beauty of a gallery wall hanging system lies in its flexibility and ease of use. Traditional picture hanging methods can leave walls full of holes, making it cumbersome to adjust placements or update the display. A hanging system, however, allows for easy adjustments without additional damage to your walls. This feature is particularly advantageous for renters or anyone who likes to refresh their decor frequently.

DESIGNING YOUR GALLERY WALL The first step in creating a gallery wall is planning. Start by selecting a theme or color scheme that complements your space. Themes can be as varied as black-and-white photographs, abstract paintings, or a mix of personal and artistic prints.

MATERIALS YOU WILL NEED: • A gallery wall hanging system, which typically includes mounting rails, cables or rods, and hooks. You can find them pretty much anywhere, online or at your local home improvement store. • A collection of frames and artwork. • A level, measuring tape, and perhaps a laser pointer for precision.

38

D E C OR T R E N D S | HO M E + D E SIGN

CONTINUED >

INSTALL ATION TIPS: CREATIVE ARRANGEMENTS • The arrangement of your gallery wall can follow several patterns, depending on your taste: • Linear: Artworks are hung in a straight line at eye level, creating a clean and orderly appearance. • Grid: Perfect for a collection of similarly sized frames, this layout emphasizes structure and uniformity. • Salon Style: This more traditional arrangement involves layering pieces closely together, often extending across the wall. It’s ideal for creating a rich, filled look. Enjoy curating a space that is uniquely yours, evolving with your tastes and lifestyle.

01

MEASURE YOUR SPACE:

Carefully measure the wall space where you want to install the gallery. Consider the height and width available, keeping in mind furniture and other room features.

LAY IT OUT:

Arrange your artwork on the floor to finalize your layout. This “dry run” is crucial to get a feel for how the pieces will interact with one another. I like to use painter’s tape to create a visual of what my display will look like on the walls.

03

INSTALL THE RAILS AND HANG YOUR ART:

Following the manufacturer’s instructions, mount the rails at the top of your wall. Ensure they are level and securely attached. Attach cables or rods to the rails, then use hooks to hang your frames. The beauty of the system is that you can adjust the height and position of each piece easily.

04

BALANCE AND SYMMETRY:

Step back to view your layout from different angles. Adjust the spacing and alignment as needed to achieve visual balance.

LIVING STYLE THE INTERSECTION OF FASHION AND HOME

IN

this unexpected love affair, fashion and interiors are more than just a simple pairing—they are rooted in culture, creativity, and the human desire for self-expression. As conscious consumers of the 21st century, participating in a retail landscape that is oversaturated and struggling to adapt to the ever-changing demands of the modern customer, our purchasing power should not only respond to a feeling of want but also prioritize items that reflect who we are and who we aspire to be. This is clearly visible through the representation of fashion and interiors. Although we tend to consider cost-per-wear primarily when it comes to clothing, this same principle applies to furniture and the function it brings to the home. Aesthetics and functionality both play a role in this pairing, painting a picture for the rest of the world of who the wearer is and how they live in their space. The woman who wears a blazer with sharp shoulders that makes her feel powerful in her everyday life—or the black dress that gives her a necessary boost of confidence—may naturally gravitate toward sleek, modern furniture that feels equally strong and elevates the space where the modern woman thrives.

In the same way, someone who prefers an effortless ensemble—like their favorite white T-shirt and comfortable denim jeans—may also look for home pieces that are functional and make their guests feel at ease. Even a handmade rug, one that sparks conversation about where it was found and adds a focal point to a room, mirrors how we search our closets for a sweater tied to a cherished memory. Just as we carefully choose outfits to express ourselves, it’s equally important to ensure that our living spaces are designed

with the same intention. More than ever, modern buyers are making purchasing decisions based on personal morals and values, forming a new wave of consumers who seek products that are both high-quality and environmentally or socially conscious, whether for themselves or their homes. The following imagery affirms that living a timeless lifestyle across all aspects of life is possible through the thoughtful styling of sustainable clothing and vintage furniture. As the modern retail landscape continues to evolve, it’s become increasingly vital to make conscious consumer choices—ones that allow us to express our truest selves through both our wardrobes and the places we call home.

Investing in Your Wardrobe Without Compromising Your Style ARTICLE BY LISA WOLF

2. 3. 4. 5.

IT’S POSSIBLE TO SHOW YOUR UNIQUE STYLE WITH NICE CLOTHES WHILE ALSO STRETCHING YOUR DOLLAR One’s wardrobe says a lot about a person and it is important to dress to the occasion whether it be work or play while still expressing yourself. Building a wardrobe can be a costly expense but it’s possible to show your unique style with nice clothes while also stretching your dollar.

A FUN, SUSTAINABLE WAY TO BUILD A HIGH-QUALITY AND STYLISH WARDROBE Second-hand and vintage-style clothes are a fun, sustainable way to build a high-quality and stylish wardrobe without breaking the bank. Buying handmade and second-hand also reduces the demand for new clothing production, which helps reduce waste and the environmental impact of the fashion industry.

SOME PIECES ARE SIMPLY BETTER WHEN THEY ARE SECOND-HAND Some pieces are simply better when they are second-hand like worn denim and lived-in boots or leather that’s softened over time. Get creative and add touches to your old favorites with patches, embroidery, and even natural flower colors transferred to fabric. Grab your old t-shirts, family vintage fabrics, or lace, and pull it all together into something new and memorable.

IT WAS SO PERFECTLY HER AND ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS My sister, Haley, used an 1800s petticoat and blouse, salvaged Edwardian style Christening gowns and a tablecloth, and other fabrics to create the most amazing vintage-style wedding dress. It was so perfectly her and absolutely gorgeous.

SIMPLE, WILD, CLASSIC, COLORFUL; DON’T BE AFRAID TO SHOW YOUR STYLE The best way to keep your wardrobe fresh is to look for either trendy or classic new pieces and match them with your favorite vintage or second-hand pieces, like a new dress with your grandma’s old leather jacket or a recently purchased foundation piece with a skirt made from vintage fabrics. Simple, wild, classic, colorful; don’t be afraid to show your style and your financial fashion savvy at the same time.
