The Food & Drink Edition O C TO B E R 2 02 6
Lori Rogers,MBA Live your bliss...
Downtown Cottage “We ran a process to interview realtors to sell our Baker Park home, well in advance of the targeted sale window. We wanted someone to guide us through the whole process, starting with preparation for staging - so we started about 6 months in advance. Lori came out on top for our specific criteria, and we weren’t disappointed. End result: we accepted one of several offers immediately following the opening weekend. Better still, multiple offers led to a mild price escalation - which meant we were able to very nearly net the listing price (i.e. after commissions, closing costs, etc.) If you are selling a higher end home in Frederick County, Lori is highly recommended.”

LIFESTYLE LETTER
The Food & Drink Edition
October 2026 PUBLISHER
There are few things in life that have the power to bring people together quite like food. It can turn strangers into friends, neighbors into community and an ordinary Tuesday night into a memory you somehow carry for the rest of your life. It gives us reasons to linger at the table, traditions to pass down, stories to retell—and, if we’re fortunate, recipes that become part of the family lore. This photo is a pretty perfect example. My six siblings and I recently gathered at Caboose Farm to celebrate our parents’ 50th wedding anniversary with a party and reunion. We ate, laughed, reminisced and undoubtedly talked over one another given there are now 25 people in our immediate family. What I’ll remember most isn’t necessarily everything we ate that week—although the menu was pretty fire—it’s that we were all there. Together. Around a table. Making more memories. That, to me, is the magic of food. And it’s exactly what I hope you feel as you explore this edition. Yes, there are delicious things to cook, sip and serve. But there are also stories of creativity, community, tradition and the people who pour a little—or a lot—of themselves into creating experiences for others. Because food is rarely just food. It can be an expression of culture. A creative outlet. A business built from a dream. A way to welcome someone in. A reason to celebrate. And sometimes, it’s simply the thing that gets everyone to put down their phones and stay awhile. As we head into the season of gatherings, I hope this edition inspires you to do exactly that. Don’t worry so much about making everything perfect. Order the dessert. Try the new cocktail. Let someone else handle the details when you need to. Pull out the recipe your family has loved forever—or make a new one worthy of becoming a tradition. And whatever ends up on your table, make room for the good stuff: the people you love, the stories you’ve heard a hundred times, the ones you’re hearing for the first time and the memories you haven’t made yet. Because someday, those may be the things you remember most. Here’s to great food, full tables and the people who make them worth gathering around. Cheers,

The Skatt Daddy Band kept the evening groovy with live music, while guests enjoyed delicious offerings from two food trucks, along with local beer and wine vendors. Conversations flowed as easily as the drinks, with business owners and professionals from across Frederick County connecting, laughing and enjoying the summer evening together. And then there was Bear, the owners’ Saint Bernard, who made more than one appearance—and may have quietly stolen the show. Building Community. Creating Opportunity. EMPOWERING BLACK-OWNED BUSINESSES THROUGH CULTURE, CONNECTION AND COMMUNITY SUPPORT
In Frederick, SOUL Street is building more than a marketplace—it’s creating opportunities for connection, discovery and lasting impact. We sat down with Jarad Bowens, board member of SOUL Street, to learn more about the organization’s mission and vision, along with the many ways the community can get involved and help support its work. FOR READERS DISCOVERING SOUL STREET FOR THE FIRST TIME, WHAT IS THE HEART BEHIND THIS ORGANIZATION? WHAT INSPIRED ITS CREATION? • At its heart, SOUL Street is about creating space for Blackowned businesses, entrepreneurs, creatives and community members to be seen, supported and celebrated. Inequality and injustice inspired and motivated us to provide a space to create generational wealth in the Black community and create more opportunities for Black entrepreneurs to connect with customers and get the support they need to be successful. THE MISSION GOES FAR BEYOND HOSTING MARKETS. HOW DOES SOUL STREET STRENGTHEN FREDERICK’S COMMUNITY? • SOUL Street creates opportunities for people to build relationships that might not otherwise happen. Entrepreneurs meet other entrepreneurs. Residents discover businesses they didn’t know existed. Young people see examples of people who look like them building businesses and creating opportunities. And the community gets opportunities to celebrate Black culture in a way that is joyful, inclusive and accessible to everyone.
Board Member, Jarad Bowens
MANY VENDORS ARE PASSIONATE FOOD ENTREPRENEURS, MAKERS AND SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS. WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED FROM GETTING TO KNOW THEM? • I’ve learned that behind every small business is a person with a story, a dream and a tremendous amount of resilience. When you support a local business, you’re not just buying a product, you’re investing directly in someone’s vision and future.

HOW DOES FOOD HELP TELL THE STORIES OF THE ENTREPRENEURS YOU WORK WITH? • Food carries culture, family and personal history, so sharing it gives people an opportunity to share their stories. It creates a natural way for people from different backgrounds and generations to connect. WHAT CAN VISITORS EXPECT FROM THE UPCOMING HOLIDAY MARKET? • The SOUL Street Holiday Market is really a celebration of community disguised as a shopping event. Visitors can expect great local businesses, food, music, culture and an opportunity to discover unique gifts while supporting someone’s entrepreneurial journey. CAN YOU SHARE A STORY OF A VENDOR WHOSE BUSINESS HAS BEEN MEANINGFULLY IMPACTED THROUGH SOUL STREET? • One of the most rewarding things has been watching vendors like BK Juices, K’s Banana Bread and Carmen’s Kitchen, who started with us at smaller events, grow their confidence, customer base and businesses over time. Seeing someone take that first step and then continue building is a big part of why SOUL Street exists.
“When you support a local business, you’re not just buying a product, you’re investing directly in someone’s vision and future. WHEN SOMEONE SHOPS AT A SOUL STREET MARKET, WHAT ARE THEY REALLY SUPPORTING BEYOND THE PURCHASE? • They’re supporting someone’s dream, family and future. Every purchase is a vote for the kind of community we want to build, one where local entrepreneurs have the opportunity to thrive. WHAT IS THE VISION FOR SOUL STREET OVER THE NEXT FIVE YEARS? • Over the next five years, we envision SOUL Street as a lasting platform for Black entrepreneurship, cultural connection and community development in Frederick. The community can help by showing up, shopping local, sharing these businesses with others and finding ways to invest in the entrepreneurs we’re working to uplift. Stay tuned for details on upcoming events at MySoulStreet.com and on Instagram and Facebook @mysoulstreet. OCTOB ER 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM / F R E D E R I C K

ONE BOTTLE, THREE DRINKS The Thyme-Honey Smash The easiest pour if you're new to bourbon INGREDIENTS: • 2 oz bourbon • ¾ oz freshly squeezed lemon juice • ½ oz honey syrup (equal parts honey and warm water) • 3–4 fresh thyme sprigs, plus one to garnish • Large ice sphere or cube To make: Press the thyme gently in the bottom of a shaker (enough to wake up the oils, not enough to shred it). Add bourbon, lemon, honey syrup, and ice. Shake hard, strain over a large ice sphere, and finish with a thyme sprig and a strip of lemon peel. Honey syrup keeps for two weeks in the fridge and improves nearly every whiskey drink it touches.
The Old Fashioned Four ingredients. That's the drink.
The Amber Hour BOURBON, THREE WAYS Bourbon carries a certain mystique: dim lighting, hushed tones, a vocabulary all its own. Cut through it and here's what you'll actually find: a spirit that does more with three ingredients than most bottles manage with ten. Shaken with lemon and honey, it goes bright. Stirred with bitters over one good cube, it turns deep and unhurried. Add vermouth and a proper cherry, and you've got the drink that's been quietly holding up hotel bars for a century. One good bottle, a few minutes, a comfortable chair. Everything else is just details.
Speak Bourbon Like You Mean It THE WHISKEY AISLE READS LIKE A SECRET HANDSHAKE. HERE'S THE QUICK TRANSLATION. • • • • •
18
Wheated: softer, sweeter, leans toward baked goods. High-Rye: more pepper, more spice, more backbone. Single Barrel: one barrel, one personality, quirks included. Bottled-in-Bond: one distillery, four years minimum, 100 proof. Finished: aged a second time in port, sherry, or rum casks.
H AP PY H OU R | FO O D + BE VE RAGE
INGREDIENTS: • 2 oz bourbon • ¼ oz demerara or simple syrup • 2–3 dashes aromatic bitters • Large ice cube • Orange peel, to garnish To make: Stir bourbon, syrup, and bitters with ice for a full 30 seconds (longer than feels reasonable — the dilution is part of the recipe). Strain over one large cube. Pinch the orange peel skin-side down over the drink so the oils mist across the surface, run it around the rim, and drop it in. Demerara syrup, two parts raw sugar to one part water, brings a toffee depth that plain sugar can't reach. Classic: orange peel only. Dressed up: add a brandied cherry alongside the peel for a little sweetness and color.
The Manhattan The drink that built a century of hotel bars. INGREDIENTS: • 2 oz bourbon • 1 oz sweet vermouth • 2 dashes aromatic bitters • Cocktail cherry, to garnish To make: Stir everything with plenty of ice until the mixing glass frosts over, then strain into a chilled coupe. Garnish with a real cocktail cherry (dark, rich, worth every penny of the jar). Park the coupe in the freezer while you stir. A warm glass undoes thirty seconds of careful work in about a minute.
An Even Better Way
To Enjoy Bourbon
ARTICLE BY SIERRA STULTS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY WAREHOUSE CINEMAS
A FESTIVE BOURBON EXPERIENCE AT WAREHOUSE CINEMAS When the leaves turn and evenings start calling for something festive, bourbon seems to belong everywhere: with the sunset, beside a fire or paired with an evening out. But not every great bourbon moment needs to happen behind your own bar. Sometimes the best way to enjoy a festive drink is to let someone else do the shaking and more importantly, the cleanup. For an October outing, Warehouse Cinemas is a natural place to settle in with a seasonal bourbon drink before the lights go down. Their Caramel Apple Slushie brings the flavors of fall into a playful, frozen bourbon cocktail. It is sweet, crisp and unmistakably festive, with the familiar warmth of bourbon balanced by the cozy appeal of caramel and apple. And that spirit of fun is exactly what makes Warehouse feel like more than a place to watch a movie. Independently owned and operated, Warehouse Cinemas builds its experience around first-run films, excellent food and drinks, impressive picture and sound and heated leather recliner seating. Their movie-themed events and genuinely helpful staff add another reason to make an evening of it. There is also something distinctly local about the experience. Warehouse keeps its advertising local, giving Frederick businesses and organizations a place to connect with moviegoers through previews, while its special events and seasonal offerings keep the theater connected to the community it serves. So, if your bourbon ambitions stop somewhere between “I’d love a cocktail” and “I absolutely do not want to make one,” consider that your sign. Grab the Caramel Apple Slushie, sink into a warm, roomy recliner and let Warehouse handle the rest. Frederick.WarehouseCinemas.com INGREDIENTS: • Apple Cider • Cinnamon Whiskey • Caramel Apple Butter • Apple slices • Whipped cream • Caramel drizzle • Cinnamon sugar OCTOB ER 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . Drink Out side t he L ines Where Creative Drinks, Local Makers and Community Come Together ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY SHAE BARRIOS At RAK Brewing Co., there’s always something new to pour. From hop-forward beers and colorful cocktails to collaborations with fellow Frederick makers, the brewery has built a reputation for creativity without taking itself too seriously. We connected with the RAK team to get a taste of what’s going into the glass.
KINDNESS KILLS
• Riverbend Malt • Helio Gazer Thiolized Yeast • Citra & Nectaron Hops Kindness Kills is a vibrant, hop-forward beer built on a foundation of Riverbend Malt and brewed with Helio Gazer, a thiolized yeast from Omega Yeast. The specialty yeast helps unlock and amplify naturally occurring tropical aromatics, allowing the hops to really shine. Citra and Nectaron hops bring layers of bright citrus and lush tropical fruit, creating an expressive, aromatic beer with plenty of character. It’s a great example of the creativity and experimentation behind RAK’s approach to brewing.

VIOLET BUTTERFLY
• Lemonade • Violet Syrup • Butterfly Pea Flower As striking as it is refreshing, Violet Butterfly blends bright lemonade with delicate violet syrup and butterfly pea flower for a colorful, floral-forward drink. Inspired by a beverage served at EPCOT, RAK put its own spin on the combination, balancing the tartness of lemonade with subtle floral sweetness. The butterfly pea flower gives the drink its signature vivid hue, making Violet Butterfly one of those cocktails that catches your eye before you ever take the first sip.
RAK YARD PUNCH
• Dangrous Summer Rum • Peach Schnapps • Triple Sec • Cranberry Juice • Orange Juice RAK Yard Punch is a bright, refreshing cocktail made for kicking back and enjoying time in the Yard. Featuring Dangrous Summer Rum from True Standard Distilling, it combines rum with peach schnapps, triple sec, cranberry juice and orange juice for a fruity, citrus-forward sip with a balance of sweetness and tartness. The cocktail also gives us the opportunity to highlight another local maker and the collaborative spirit within Frederick’s craft beverage community. We love being able to work with businesses like True Standard and create something that brings both brands together in a way that feels authentically Frederick.
WHAT GOES INTO THE GLASS MATTERS
At RAK, we care about what goes into the glass. Whether we’re brewing a beer, building a cocktail or collaborating with another local maker, quality ingredients and thoughtful choices matter to us. At the same time, we don’t think good drinks need to be overcomplicated. We like experimenting, playing with unexpected flavors and creating things that are just as fun to drink as they are thoughtfully made. RAKbrewing.com

The Hol id ay Host’s Sec ret We apon Smart Tips for Serving a Memorable Holiday Meal Without Doing It All Yourself
2. PREP NOW, RELAX LATER Erica’s biggest tip? Make lists. Create a prep list for the days leading up to the gathering, then a day-of timeline working backward from when you plan to eat. Pull out your china and platters. You can even set your table days in advance to mitigate stress.
4. GIVE YOURSELF SOME BREATHING ROOM Erica also recommends finishing proteins about an hour before serving. The extra time allows meat to rest and be carved while freeing the oven for reheating sides. 5. LET SOMEONE ELSE HANDLE IT And if you’d rather spend that hour with your guests than in the kitchen, outsourcing is always an option. Set the Table’s Thanksgiving dishes can be ordered ahead and delivered with reheating instructions. After all, the best holiday meal isn’t the one that required the most work. It’s the one that leaves everyone—including the host—with something to savor.
Erica’s approach extends far beyond the holiday table. From beautifully catered gatherings to convenient meal delivery, Set the Table helps clients spend less time planning, shopping and cooking—and more time enjoying family, pursuing hobbies or simply savoring the moment. SetTheTableLLC.com

1. PLAN A MENU THAT WORKS FOR YOU Build a menu with dishes that can be prepared ahead. Shrimp cocktail, dips, charcuterie, mashed potatoes, stuffing and vegetable casseroles can all be made in advance and reheated, keeping you out of the kitchen when guests arrive.
3. KNOW HOW MUCH IS ENOUGH For quantities, plan on about one pound of turkey per person, including the bones, and roughly one-third to one-half pound of each vegetable side per guest. For 10 guests, that’s about a 10-pound turkey, five pounds of potatoes and four pounds of carrots—with leftovers encouraged.

Hosting the holidays can feel like a fulltime job, but thank goodness for Erica Wildberger. She knows the secret to a successful gathering isn’t doing it all yourself—it’s knowing where your time is best spent.

Have Your Brand and Eat It, Too
ARTICLE BY SIERRA STULTS
For businesses looking to make a memorable impression, Sage Cakery is proving that branding can be more than something you see. It can be something you taste. Sage Cakery is taking custom desserts to a whole new level with the ability to print virtually any image, logo, design or message directly onto cookies, macarons, cakecicles and more. The result is a deliciously creative way to put your brand front and center. From client gifts and employee celebrations to grand openings, corporate milestones, conferences and open houses, custom treats offer businesses a unique way to create an experience people will remember. A company logo on a beautifully decorated cookie can turn a simple thank-you into a thoughtful bite, while branded desserts can add a polished, personal touch to your event. The possibilities don’t stop at the office. Sage Cakery brings the same creativity to life’s personal celebrations, too. Whether it’s a custom design for a birthday party, wedding, anniversary or special milestone, desserts can be made to complement the occasion and tell a story that is uniquely yours. Sage Cakery believes the sweetest details are often the ones people remember most. With a custom creation designed around your vision, your next celebration—or your brand—it can be every bit as delicious as it is unforgettable. Bring Your Story to the Table. SageCakery.com
