Hey friends! Summer is HERE! Can you believe it? This time of year always goes by fast so hang on tight and enjoy the ride! As we welcome the warmth and sunshine, we remember an important day that kicks it all off.. Father’s Day!
Billy Graham once said that “A good father is one of the most unsung, unpraised, unnoticed, and yet one of the most valuable assets in our society.” I would like to do my small part to say THANK YOU to all the dedicated and loving fathers out there in our community who are showing up for their families. So much of your sacrifice goes unseen but that doesn’t make it any less important. We tip our hats to you.
Whether it’s your father or a fatherly figure in your life, I encourage you to tell them this Father’s Day the impact they’ve made on you. I was reminded recently that letters have the ability to leave a lasting impression the recipient can come back to when they need a lift so consider sharing your appreciation in that way. It will likely bless them far more than you realize!

Athletes of All Levels Discover More Than Physical Benefits Through Mixed Martial Arts
ARTICLE BY EMILY DICKEY PHOTOGRAPHY BY JENNIFER ROSARIA FILM & PHOTOGRAPHYIf you build it, they will come.
If you create a positive and uplifting environment, they will not only come, but they will carry those elements out into the rest of the world.
That’s how a ripple effect is created.
Groundswell MMA creates this ripple effect not only on the mat, but in young beginners, experienced athletes and the surrounding community.
“If you want to have an impact, you must first focus on yourself,” said Zach Davis, Groundswell’s owner and a third-degree black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. “Then you can branch out to your neighborhood and community. Eventually your influence is being felt on a much larger scale, all because you started small.”
Located on Gas House Pike, the mixed martial arts facility offers classes seven-days-a-week (starting as early as 5:30 a.m. and as late as 7:30 p.m.) which cater to nearly everyone, including newbies curious to explore the sport, athletes looking to compete in more advanced training
and sparring, and individuals hoping to challenge themselves physically and mentally.
“Almost everyone who comes in is going through something, whether it be family, professional, personal or relationship issues. We are creating an environment where a positive community is the norm, the expectation,” Zach said.
Athletes train in the same large room with youngsters on one side and more experienced members on the other side, allowing all participants to inspire and encourage one another. Client ages range from as young as four to as mature as 65.
“I'm really proud about the scope of people we are able to reach through this platform,” said Zach. “When people start seeing the way they have changed because of martial arts, they want to share it with others. Our instructors grow out of people who have taken classes and want to teach other people the lessons they have learned.”
“It's because of the safe space Groundswell provides that youth and adults discover who they are and what they're capable of. We have seen people come into the school timid, unsure of themselves and scared to even step on the mat. Six months later... you wouldn't recognize that individual... and they don't recognize themselves!” said Zach’s wife, Courtney.
A multi-sport athlete in high school, Zach began studying mixed martial arts while attending college at the University of Maryland. After graduation in 2006, Zach worked odd jobs and competed on various levels. Building his reputation by winning matches, he separated himself from the pack and drew the attention of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) organization.
Zach was invited to compete in Season 13 of the Ultimate Fighter reality show, which features

professional MMA fighters living together in Las Vegas, following them as they train and compete against one another to earn a contract. He advanced to the quarterfinals before retinal tears prevented him from continuing to compete. He came back to the East Coast a little “disenchanted and bummed out.”
“Honestly though, I’m a silver-lining kind of person. I have friends competing who have never, and may never, get an opportunity to compete in that arena. I had the opportunity to touch that point and train with championship-level athletes. That’s something I will always be grateful for,” said Zach.
Equipped with an increased passion for the art, Zach’s sights were not only set on training, but also pivoting to find a way to make MMA a viable professional path.
“It’s hard to see teaching as a career opportunity. There are a lot of moving pieces that go into it,” Zach explained.
Zach worked as the manager of Soldierfit’s: The Fort MMA in Frederick for eight years, before purchasing the academy in 2021, and then rebranding it to Groundswell MMA in 2022. “Working with Soldierfit allowed me to watch, learn and better understand all those moving pieces. When the time felt right, I was ready to begin the next chapter of my journey.”
“Zach is an excellent example of what's possible if you're open to change, have faith in your purpose and walk in faith even when that next step seems impossible and/or scary,” said Courtney, whom Zach credits as his biggest supporter.
Working in the field of leadership and executive coaching gives Courtney experiences and insights that have helped Zach during this new endeavor. “A gift from coaching has been my ability to help my husband identify his leadership blind spots and ask powerful questions that allow him to pull out from within himself the answers to his own challenges,” said Courtney, who studied Tang Soo Do for six years before finding Jiu Jitsu in 2013. She is currently working on her purple belt with Groundswell Instructor Mike Fuller.
Zach and Courtney chose the name Groundswell because of their mission to lift others through and above hardships and challenges they may be facing at any given time. Not only does this apply in the gym, but it also carries out into the real world, especially the Frederick community.
“We try to do a lot to give back to this community because it has done so much for us,” Zach said. This not only includes inclusive classes, but also offering self-defense seminars, holding classes for adults with disabilities and sponsoring elementary fundraisers such as a recent fun run.
“I want people to see the opportunities you have when you not only believe in yourself, but you also find something you love that you can use as a service to others,” Zach said.

ARTICLE BY | PHOTOGRAPHY BY LYTEBOX PHOTOGRAPHYWHEN DID YOU FIRST START PLAYING BASKETBALL?
Eighth grade was when I first took it seriously.
WHAT IS YOUR BASKETBALL BACKGROUND?
I’m a seven-year pro. I’ve played in Chile, Ecuador, Italy, Saudi Arabia, Morocco and Tijuana and I’ve also played in The Basketball League (TBL) since it first started.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT BEING A PART OF THE FREDERICK FLYING COWS?
The community’s involvement!
WHO IS YOUR ROLE MODEL?
My mother Karla Sledge. I watched her work two jobs, day in and day out, with no help, and she always held her head high through everything good and bad.
WHAT DO YOU WANT PEOPLE TO KNOW ABOUT YOU?
I may be misjudged by my image, but I’m one of the nicest people you could ever meet.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE A STUDENT WHO WANTS TO PURSUE BASKETBALL?
Discipline yourself to be the best student; and if you can do that, then you can also do the same with basketball.
WHAT DREAMS DO YOU HAVE OUTSIDE OF BASKETBALL?
I just want to help change the lives of those who are less fortunate.
WHAT’S YOUR PURPOSE IN LIFE?
To bring happiness to strangers around the world...I thank God for this gift.

I love playing basketball because it’s my passion. It’s all I know. It’s also a great escape; and it’s a place where I can just be free.

WHAT WAS YOUR PROCESS THAT GOT YOU HERE?

WHAT ARE YOUR BASKETBALL GOALS?
My goal and dream is to reach the highest level (the NBA) and to give back to the kids in the community.
WHAT IS A GOAL YOU HAVE OUTSIDE OF BASKETBALL?

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT BEING A FATHER?
Wayne: I love being a dad! I never thought I could love someone so deeply as I love my children and now my grandchildren. They are a gift from God. I’m especially grateful for the close relationship my wife, Diana, and I have with our children.
HOW HAS YOUR FATHER IMPACTED YOUR LIFE?
Ashley: Dad loves Jesus, and loves people. He is reliable, a man of his word. He is intentional, he pursues relationships with his kids and grandkids. He is peaceful, always looking to cultivate peace and harmony in our family. He is gracious, quick to forgive. He has never shut us out for our mistakes. He is kind, encouraging, affirming. He is fun! He makes things fun and enjoyable. He is affectionate. He brings us flowers, plans creative dates with us. He is stylish! Always with a cool outfit and a good pair of shoes. He is consistent and reliable. I aim to become more like him in all of these ways!
WHAT ARE YOU MOST GRATEFUL FOR ABOUT YOUR FATHER?
Catherine: I am grateful that he’s always been such a loving and consistent father. He is so hardworking and so committed. He worked long days (seven days a week for awhile), then came home and was the best father to us kids and the best husband to our mom! He has shown up for us every day for our whole lives. We can always call him. I am grateful that he’s my dad.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT BEING A FATHER?
Yemi: Sage’s Mom and I are blessed with a son like Sage—a kind, empathetic, smart, thoughtful human being.
HOW HAS BEING A FATHER IMPACTED YOUR LIFE?
Yemi: Becoming a father has made me a much better human being. Fatherhood has given me the gifts of selflessness, patience, kindness, forgiveness and most importantly, fatherhood brought me back to my faith.
WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT LESSON YOUR FATHER HAS TAUGHT YOU?
Sage: One of the most important lessons I learned from my father is that hard work and perseverance pay off. Prior to his arrival in Frederick, my Dad had inordinate success with his business in New York. When he and my mother decided to have me, they wanted to do it in a safer environment that was closer to family. They decided to take a more difficult path, moving away from established connections and essentially restarting from scratch. Over time, my Dad was able to rebuild his business and grow to even further heights than what he achieved in New York!
Years Living in Frederick County: 26 years

Years Living in Frederick County: 58 years
Mark: Seeing your children grow up to be productive and independent individuals. My kids often refer to times in their early childhood where I would make them do physical work before doing anything fun. They didn’t appreciate it then but I think now they realize the importance of these life lessons.
Mark: Take on every job with a vengeance and do it to the best of your ability. Take on the challenge. The ultimate reward will be the sense of accomplishment and pride. Whether in your career or raising your family, this philosophy will prove helpful.
Peter: He leads by example. The hard work and enthusiasm that he puts into his everyday tasks is something I highly respect and strive to imitate. In difficult times, he’s hardworking, resilient and innovative. In fruitful times, he’s hardworking, humble and appreciative. With this attitude, I’ve been blessed to witness him develop into one of the best designers, leaders and businessmen I know.
Peter: Dad cares about people. He cares for his family, friends, clients, community, workforce and trade partners. Dad grew up with little means, as the firstborn of nine children, he learned responsibility early on in life. And he was able to appreciate the wealth of relationships around him to gain valuable life lessons…he’s given innumerous hours and resources to the community, most notably to those in need. Much of this charity goes unseen. His efforts to help provide housing needs and more to people of all ages and backgrounds is most respectful and reflects the heart of my dad.
WHAT DO YOU WANT YOUR CHILDREN TO ALWAYS REMEMBER?
Joe: I want my children to remember that everything we have is a blessing from our Lord Jesus Christ. And we should always act in a way that is pleasing to Him. Your spouse is the most important person in your life. Don’t take your relationship with your spouse for granted. Go on date nights with your spouse on a consistent basis. And always remember that you have the responsibility to raise your children and provide them the love they need to become the best they can become. They, too, are blessings and should be treated accordingly.
HOW HAS YOUR FATHER IMPACTED YOUR LIFE?
Blake: My father has always been my role model and leader. Ever since childhood, he has always been a prestigious leader. He was my coach for all the sports I played as a child, and became one of my biggest supporters in high school. He is the best mentor and colleague I could ask for when I changed careers and started working with him. But most importantly, he influenced me to be kind, give back to the community and support those in need. He is the biggest philanthropist I know and strives to make the world a better place with small acts of kindness, to big projects that impact an entire community. He’s influenced me and many others to be the best versions of themselves and to strive to be better.
WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT LESSON YOUR FATHER HAS TAUGHT YOU?
Brooks: My father is a great man and has taught me so many things. The most important thing he has taught me is to care for others. And, to always give first and serve always. He has taught me a strong work ethic and to put people first. I am the man I am because of who the man my father is. He is amazing.

WHAT IS THE BEST PART OF BEING A FATHER?
Roger: To let the love of God, their Heavenly Father, flow through me, by learning over many years how to lead out of weakness and humility instead of power and pride.
WHY IS YOUR FATHER YOUR HERO?
Amber: My Dad is the most selfless man I know. He loves and serves with joy and is constantly putting the needs of others above his own—which is what being a hero is all about. He walks in humility and doesn’t even realize the number of lives he’s impacted! His unwavering love and devotion first to my mom and then to us kids is a gift I will never stop being grateful for. The safety, security and trust I was blessed to grow up with has forever changed me. My Dad is my hero!
WHAT LEGACY HAS YOUR FATHER GIVEN YOU?
Amber: To know God and make Him known. To understand and believe that greater depths of unity, reconciliation and healthy, thriving family life are all possible in our communities. That faith can actually move mountains. My Dad’s love for Jesus, commitment to prayer and devotion to God’s Word has been evident every day of his journey. He walks the walk and operates from a place of peace and rest because he knows Whose he is and what he is here for. He’s not living for the things of this world but with eternal purpose and perspective. His living legacy has shaped my life along with the lives of my six siblings and it is my joy to honor him. A life well lived for an audience of One.
Retired Major from the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office; Currently Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Backgrounds Investigator and CampEzri Board Member and Pastor working with “At-Risk Kids” Children: Gregory, Bradley; Grandchildren: 3 Years Living in Frederick County: 63 years
WHAT DO I WANT MY CHILDREN TO ALWAYS REMEMBER WHEN THEY THINK OF THEIR DAD?
Gary: I love them and they both are one of my greatest gifts from God. That they know how proud I am to be their father and that I would do absolutely anything for them. That I always told them to be respectful, never lie, treat people how you would want to be treated and always take the opportunity to say “I love you” and “thank you” when the time presents itself…I hope they know how deeply I love their mom and that I always put the Lord and family above everything else in my life. For them to put their faith first and whatever they choose in life to give their very best and honor the Lord.
WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED FROM YOUR DAD?
Greg: My dad has taught me a lot of things in life. None more important than God is the first and only real priority. Things like
“remember where you came from” when you move up in the ranks at work, don’t change who you are to fit in, never give up especially when those around you have, and the most important has been faith in our Lord and Savior. Fight the good fight and finish the race well is, bar none, the most important thing he has and continues to bestow on my brother and I. Likewise, my brother and I are now dads and are raising our boys to do the same. I didn’t always live that way but he never gave up on me and I love him for it. Like the Almighty, even when we don’t deserve it, He’s there for us no matter what. I hope to be known one day for being even half the leader and man of God he is.
HOW HAS YOUR FATHER IMPACTED YOUR LIFE?
Brad: My dad has had a profound impact in all areas of my life. He exemplifies a loving dad, a dedicated husband, a hardworking provider and a strong but humble leader. Most importantly, he’s taught me to live a life centered around Jesus Christ.
WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT LESSON YOUR FATHER HAS TAUGHT YOU?
Brad: To treat others with respect regardless of who they are or the situation they’re in. During my dad’s 30 year career serving the community as a Deputy Sheriff in Frederick County, he treated everyone with respect and understanding. My Dad is the example that I try to live up to.

During a bustling Easter weekend at a city center, she spotted a young man with Down syndrome, independently making his way between shops and restaurants. At every location, someone would greet him affectionately and check to see where he was off to next. Joana noticed and reflected that this isn’t a common sight in the United States.
The Tsinonis’s own son, Nektarios, 24, also has Down syndrome, and a love for Greek coffee had often led him to dream out loud about owning his very own coffee shop. The family—who also own
Middletown Greek restaurant Aleko’s— decided to take the leap to make not only Nektario’s but also other local young people’s dreams come true. They opened Beans & Dreams (Nektario’s Place) as a community café to further, in their words, “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” for young adults with disabilities.
The café partners with Middletown High School’s Learning for Life program, and welcomes applications from other young adults with disabilities in the community, allowing them to work in a safe environment where they gain greater financial independence, valuable life skills and new friendships. The venture has already been a success to the point that a few “original” employees are stepping up to mentor newcomers, adding leadership development to the list of opportunities Beans & Dreams is providing. Additional “happy accident”
wins have occurred, such as the pop-up stand in the café selling employee Cole’s curated boxes of sensory fidget toys. Joana looks forward to adding another young woman’s knit blankets, making Beans & Dreams a place where community members with disabilities can launch small businesses as well.
But of course, the café’s mission to provide special opportunities doesn’t put delicious food and coffee in the back seat. To introduce a new element to the local café scene, Beans & Dreams brews the family’s beloved Greek-style coffee, including the delectable freddo cappuccino, a slightly sweeter, chilled take on the traditional Italian drink. There are homemade Greek pastries, as well as fresh baked goods sourced from a baker with a disability in Hagerstown. Beans & Dreams makes a point of sourcing as
“WHEN WE SEE THOSE WITH DISABILITIES OUT AND ABOUT, WE GAIN MORE UNDERSTANDING, AND THERE ARE MORE OPPORTUNITIES TO BE KIND.”
many local and organic items as possible (down to the tableware, sourced from a local potter), as well as a varied gluten-free selection. Joana notes that it can be hard to find “fun” gluten-free desserts, so Beans & Dreams even stocks a few gluten-free specialty cakes. One of the few things from farther afield is the cheesecake; but it’s only the best, from a bakery in New York.
The café space is also unique and will offer even more to the community in the coming months. The building was the former Middletown trolley house, and has been renovated with original beams intact and a painting of the trolley prominent on the wall to
commemorate its history. Beans & Dreams added a few vintage-style benches to the space to recreate some of the “trolley house” feel. Half of the café space, currently empty, awaits a community market which will be a pop-up location for a fresh flower shop and other local artisan goods. The café also plans to add a meeting space for business lunches and other small group events.
The best part about Beans & Dreams is that it’s only the beginning. There are plans underway, Joana says, to launch a nonprofit—the Nektarios Foundation—alongside the café, which will provide gift cards to employees and other community members with disabilities to be used at local restaurants, gyms and other hangouts. “If you think about people like Nektarios, you see them out when they’re children at school; but when they’re older, you don’t see them,” Joana says. Her vision, just as she saw with the young man in Greece, is to integrate those with disabilities into community life. Not only for the sake of their thriving, but to enrich the lives of everyone else. “When we see those with disabilities out and about,” she says, “we gain more understanding, and there are more opportunities to be kind.”

3 WAYS TO CONFIRM WHICH SHOT TO USE BASED ON YOUR HANDICAP
One of the biggest challenges as a golfer is knowing what shot to play and when. The key is understanding what shot works best for you based on your ability. The tips ahead will help you decide what to do around the green. I encourage you to follow these techniques to determine with confidence when to Putt, Chip or Pitch from any lie!
I always recommend PUTTING anytime you have the opportunity to use the flat stick. The reason why it should always be your first choice is that it has the least amount of loft on the face of the club allowing for the least amount of fat or thin shots to accrue. Practice even putting out of rough on a downhill or sidehill lie around the practice green. If you are a higher handicap player, practice putting from all around the practice green to see if you can consistently get on the green on your first swing of the putter.
CHIPPING with a 7 or 8 iron is the next best golf shot to attempt for the same reason as the putter. It has less loft than your wedges which means less margin for error. Set up with the toe of the club down and the heel of the club off the ground. It will feel very much like a putt. Use this method when you have to carry about 3-5 yards of turf that would negatively affect a putt. If you don’t have a lot of space between the edge of the green and the flag, try this same shot using a pitching wedge or sand wedge. It will start higher and roll out less than a 7 or 8 iron.
Last but not least is PITCHING. In order to be a good golfer, you will need to have this shot in the bag. When playing golf you will have to get over a bunker or water hazard that will require a high lofted, quick stopping golf shot. Practice this shot a lot but use it only when you have no other option as it has the most room for error. Play the ball in the middle to slightly ahead in your stance, use your most lofted wedges, usually a 56 or 60 degree of loft. Swing the club back to your belt line and brush through the impact area all the way to a full finish. The higher the finish, the higher the ball will travel. Hold the finish to see how far the ball travels and adjust your length of swing to send the ball different distances.
