LIFESTYLE LETTER

Health & Wellness Welcome to the New Year, Frederick! 2024 is upon us and what an opportunity we have. A fresh start, clean state, a new beginning. Whether you get jazzed up by resolutions or feel discouraged by them, coming into a new year does offer a reset that can lead to positive change if our mindset is in the right place. In my journey with goal setting, I’ve learned a few things. Namely, less is more. Small changes overtime can lead to massive outcomes. Any Atomic Habits fans out there? I was born with a “go big or go home” mentality that I wouldn’t be able to shake if I tried but I’m learning that tailoring my intensity serves me well. For example, ice baths are all the rage right now. My brain? 20 minutes a day. A better idea? Taking a cold shower three times a week. We can move towards real change without taking drastic measures that likely won’t last anyways. What is one area of your life you’d like to see improvement? Can you think of a small adjustment that could move you forward slowly but surely? I’m rooting you on! In support of healthy and positive change, it is our goal in this edition to address health like spokes on a wheel. We’ve rallied up some local experts to inspire you on your journey and we’re excited for you to get to know them better. From the impact of good nutrition and importance of financial wellness to delicious smoothie bowl recipes and a powerful story about overcoming, this edition is geared to lift your spirits and set you and 2024 off in the right direction. Remember, a strong mindset paired with perseverance can be a game changer. Greater health is available to us all, one micro step at a time. Happy New Year all you beautiful people!

WISH was founded in early 2010 by Kathy Schultze of State Farm Insurance and Meghan Butler of Ceresville Mansion, with the goal of providing networking opportunities in the community for like-minded women. In 2015, member Melissa Lentz was invited to serve in a leadership role for WISH. Over the years, the core mission has expanded to be community driven and to support each other, along with other organizations and nonprofits. Networking is still a priority, while giving back to the community. WISH meets on the first Thursday morning of every month and plans at least one evening event each month. All are welcome. Frederick Health in Brunswick is the newest location that opened its doors in Fall 2023.

NATALIE LOWREY Certified Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP)

“The individuals I’m caring for are my neighbors...”

Think about what you want in healthcare, especially when it comes to caring for you and your family. Most of us crave a seamless experience, a one-stop destination where there's no need to hop from place to place for appointments, tests or any other healthcare needs. A full-service healthcare center offers just that—the care you need, when you need it, at a location close to you. The growing emphasis on convenience in healthcare helps improve access to care. That’s why Frederick Health has community sites in Urbana, Frederick City, Emmitsburg and Brunswick, with additional locations planned for the future. Each location provides five essential services: Primary Care, Urgent Care, Laboratory, Imaging and Physical Therapy & Sports Rehab. They are staffed by expert providers who respect you, your background, your individual needs and treatment goals. “This is our vision. This is the future of healthcare and this is definitely the future of Frederick Health,” says Amy Arnold, Frederick Health Practice Manager. “Access means a lot to the people of Frederick County. Nobody likes waiting to get the care they need!" Behind this vision is a team of expert providers who are fully on board with creating easy access to healthcare providers, comprehensive services and friendly care right in our community. Frederick Health’s goal of establishing full-service healthcare centers aligns with the Healthy People 2030 Framework (health.gov) which serves as a roadmap for public health efforts and policy development in the U.S. There is a

national focus on improving health by helping people get timely, high-quality healthcare services. “Research points to the fact that more access to primary care and urgent care leads to better overall health,” notes Dr. B. Shanes, Board-Certified Family Practice Provider with Frederick Health Medical Group. Dr. B. Shanes now sees patients in Brunswick, the newest location that opened its doors in Fall 2023, having previously seen patients in Urbana. “Brunswick and Urbana are both growing communities, and we're growing alongside them,” says Dr. B. Shanes. “Introducing core healthcare services to residents there has had a significant impact." Urgent care has grown rapidly nationwide because of convenience. It offers same-day appointments for non-severe illnesses or injuries during extended hours, including early mornings, evenings, weekends and holidays. Urgent care is a cost-effective option for non-life-threatening issues such as moderate cold and flu symptoms, eye redness, sprains and strains when you need to be seen immediately and your primary care provider is not available. By housing primary care and urgent care under one roof, Frederick Health makes care more convenient and connected. “You can visit urgent care, with or without a primary care provider. If you don't have a Primary Care provider, we can help you find one, often the very next day,” Arnold explains. “You’re also able to get your labs, X-rays and physical therapy, if needed, all at one stop.” CONTINUED >

This expansion extends to the northern part of Frederick County, too. Frederick Health Emmitsburg opened its doors in Summer 2022. Natalie Lowrey, Certified Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP), treats adult and pediatric patients at this new center. “Expanding treatment options in northern Frederick County is a priority for Frederick Health,” she says. “We understand that driving 15-20 minutes can be a significant challenge for our patients. Our Emmitsburg center is our way of bringing healthcare closer to our patients, ensuring their needs are met with ease and convenience.” Lowrey, a Frederick County native, emphasizes her deep connection to the community: "The individuals I'm caring for are my neighbors, and ensuring they have access to the incredible services we provide is a top priority for me.” As Frederick Health continues to look for ways to meet the changing needs of the community, they are expanding the services being offered at these centers. Right now, Dr. David Kowalk, orthopedic expert with Frederick Health Medical Group visits Emmitsburg every Monday, and Dr. Patrick Mansky, cancer expert, is available every other Tuesday. “Whether it's orthopedics and sports medicine, oncology, ear, nose and throat (ENT) or gastroenterology services, the goal is to broaden our offerings in these locations. We aim to enhance accessibility and ensure a comprehensive range of healthcare services are available to meet the needs of our community,” says Arnold. Beyond that, Frederick Health is looking to expand with future sites to best serve the well-being of the community they serve. “Every individual deserves good health and to collaborate with someone who understands their unique health needs,” says Lowrey. Be Healthy & Happy in 2024 DR. LO SHARES INSIGHTS ABOUT HEALTHY LIVING

ARTICLE BY SIERRA STULTS

The Advanced Chiropractic and Nutritional Healing Center emerges as a pioneer seamlessly merging complementary and alternative practices. Driven by a commitment to transformative healthcare, Dr. Lo places paramount importance on nutrition, enabling the body’s natural healing processes. His philosophy transcends merely addressing symptoms, viewing them instead as signals unveiling underlying health issues. Known around town as the guy that never stops playing Pickleball due to his commitment and passion for the sport, Dr. Lo generously shares some of his wellness insights that keep him and his patients healthy and happy. At 72 years old, Dr. Lo stays healthy and active by regimenting his recovery with natural anti-inflammatories as well as swimming and stretching after his pickleball matches at the YMCA. He sees a chiropractor and personal trainer and is committed to eating whole and healthy foods. He also advocates steering clear of detrimental ingredients such as refined soybean oil, as it constitutes for almost 10% of Americans’ calorie intake and has the potential for glyphosate contamination (a.k.a. Roundup). Alongside, he avoids fructose corn syrup, a catalyst for numerous health issues, singled out for its contributions to heart disease, obesity, cancer and dementia. And, by avoiding preservatives and food dyes he aims to reduce chemicals in his body, as the average American consumes about 2.5 pounds of these chemicals per year. Maintaining a state of well-being in today’s fast-paced world may require effort, but Dr. Lo is here to help with more than your chiropractic needs, offering Nutritional Response Testing, allergy screenings and detox programs. Advanced Chiropractic and Nutritional Healing is a complete Wellness Center and inspires us to embark on our journey toward better health. DoctorLo.com

BALANCE

In 2023, we are living in an age where women are flourishing in the business world and are making a powerful impact on their communities and society as a whole. It’s exciting to witness as opportunities for women abound and woman-owned businesses emerge, displaying the diverse array of skills and innovations they have to offer. As a female executive herself with thirteen years of experience, Dr. Diana Castiblanco is committed to supporting these ambitious women to be as successful as they can be in their roles in a vital and unique way. Her goal? To empower generational health for women, one life at a time. For Dr. Castiblanco, her passion for health began brewing at a young age. As a little girl in Bogota, Colombia, she remembers noticing discrepancies in the healthcare system that triggered complex questions in her young mind. “...as a little kid, I noticed…why do we have to go to this clinic while other people are able to go to the other clinic that has all the things available?” she recalls. As Dr. Castiblanco’s awareness of this challenge grew, so did her passion for improving health outcomes for all—no matter who they are. This vision remained unchanged as the years passed, and upon moving to the United States at age ten, Dr. Castiblanco was determined to work in the science field. She wasted no time finding her path. As the first of her family to pursue a college career, she knew there was much to learn in order to navigate the college environment; so she joined a program offered by her school called Upward Bound that did just that. Dr. Castiblanco then pursued an agricultural program offered by the Pennsylvania State University that was available to minority students—and this is where she unexpectedly discovered her passion: the immune system. As part of this agricultural program, Dr. Castiblanco took a microbiology course, and the more she learned, the clearer her path became. Her vision remained the same: to give people the best chance at their best, healthiest lives. But now, she knew exactly how to achieve it. “...I just loved the idea of microbes. But I knew that I wanted to understand it in the context of humans, because it was really important for me to understand how we help people have better lives.” Dr. Castiblanco explained. “...I knew that’s what I needed to study. I don’t just want to study science; I don’t just want to study biology. I want to know this specific thing because it’s so interrelated with how we…become healthy…”. And so with laser focus, Dr. Castiblanco went on to earn her Bachelor’s Degree in Immunology and Toxicology at The Pennsylvania State University and a Ph.D in Immunology at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. She has since worked in a wide variety of roles within the biomedical field, spanning from research to translational science to executive leadership—each adding another layer of expertise to her experience. Along the way, two specific discoveries set her course to Seventh Balance. The first? The consistent finding that the outcome of certain diseases are most impacted not primarily by genetics but by environmental factors—namely, health habits. “...throughout the course of my biomedical career over the past 13 years, one of the things that has been consistently demonstrated over and over is that our genetics make about ten to fifteen percent of the disease itself; but it is really what we call epigenetics—or the environment—that ultimately modulate the severity and the outcome of that disease,” Dr. Castiblanco explained. “...we know from epidemiological studies that the higher risk factors that are associated with disease progression or disease severity are not at all genetic. They are actually environmental…” This realization fascinated her, prompting her to take a deeper dive into lifestyle medicine and finding a way to connect it to her work.

The second realization came from Dr. Castiblanco’s work with women as executive leaders at various companies. As she dove deeper into her mentoring role, she grew more and more passionate about enabling her staff to reach their full potential as individuals, businesswomen and leaders. But while Dr. Castiblanco knew she could achieve this to some extent through a traditional business leadership role, she realized she could put her knowledge and experience to work in a way that could make an even more significant impact in these women’s lives—and many others. “...because stress is an aggravator, and women are twenty percent more stressed on a day-today basis, then we know for sure that there needs to be something else happening for women,” Dr. Castiblanco explained.” And how could she change that? That’s where Seventh Balance comes in. At Seventh Balance, Dr. Diana Castiblanco and her small but mighty team are transforming women’s lives in a lasting way; and while still fueled by her lifelong passion to improve health outcomes, her vision has grown exponentially. “I would love to be able to create generational health for women by ultimately helping them to gain and understand what health really is so that they can be better leaders in society,” she shared. Focusing on female executives, Dr. Castiblanco draws on her years of experience, extensive knowledge and built-in compassion to employ a thoughtfully designed Lifestyle Medicine Program to help

her clients overcome irritable bowel syndrome and other digestive problems. She works with each woman to craft a tailor-made plan that hones in on lasting habit change in order to produce real results, specifically targeting sleep, nutrition, physical activity, stress management and social connection. Another key component of Seventh Balance is mentorship. This means that while the program lasts for two to three months, each plan is crafted on a week-by-week basis in order to accommodate for each week’s specific challenges. Clients also meet with Dr. Castiblanco bi-weekly and have access to her at all times through the private health portal for additional support and questions. A lot of work for Dr. Castiblanco and her team? Absolutely. But they would have it no other way. “I’m very passionate! I wake up in the morning knowing that every day, I get to wake up and I get to transform women’s lives,” Dr. Castiblanco shares. And the passion shows as she and her team have yet one more crucial aspect of their business: community-based service. Dr. Castiblanco and her team have been busy proposing grants to carry out lifestyle medicine programs designed specifically for the Latino community. With Seventh Balance only having its beginnings in February of 2023, they have already successfully implemented one of these programs and have been approved to begin another program in 2024. The goal of these programs? To support the Latina women in our community by teaching them the various facets of lifestyle medicine, ultimately equipping them to improve their quality of life themselves by changing their habits and perspectives. They’ve already successfully done this for ten phenomenal Latina women in our community, and they’re aiming high with the goal to reach at least fifty women through the upcoming program. “We are not in the business of making money. We are in the business of changing habits, of transforming

She and her husband share two beautiful daughters, Isabelle and Eva, whom they are raising intentionally to understand what true health is and how to achieve it. Dr. Castiblanco also invests in the generational wellbeing of her family by sharing her home with her grandparents—a way to support them as they supported her so faithfully throughout her career journey, and also to enable generational connection between her children and their great grandparents. Dr. Castiblanco’s vision is big, and through Seventh Balance, she is already making waves. SeventhBalance.com

English, but a meal is a great connector. Sign language and laughter are great sauces. Hugs are great garnishes. Two days later, we attended a Maasai ceremony full of dances, singing, poetry and games. Part of the ceremony was the induction of Clean Water Kenya’s founders into the tribe as elders. As an active member of the organization, I was welcomed along with the NGO board members with gifts of wraps, along with ceremonial and personal beaded jewelry. Over the last ten years, Clean Water Kenya has provided over a thousand water filters to Massai villagers. That day, we gifted one hundred more. Smiles, roasted goat, non-descript delicious foods, handshakes, Tusker beer, bouquets, shared wine, serenades and more filled my days. I was hugged, gifted, and graciously welcomed by the generous, beautiful, wonderful people I met in Kenya. It was a very nourishing adventure. CleanWaterKenya.com

Tangential involvement in a clean water project spurred a recent trip to Kenya. It became one of my most nourishing adventures. Travel provides learning to feed your brain. This trip nourished my heart, as well. My first day was filled with smiles from healthy schoolchildren in communities using our water filters. Healthy children and healthy communities are happier, more productive and more independent. Doctors in two clinics told us the water filters had significantly reduced diseases in the communities they serve. The small NGO, Clean Water Kenya, was my reason for traveling and the reason for the smiles around me. Every donated portable filtration pot transforms very dirty river water to be crystal clear and delicious. I know because I drank it. That day, I had a meal on my lap in a 12’x15’ room in a concrete home with what seemed like a village full of Kampo tribe members. Perhaps only six of us spoke

FINANCIAL PLANNER MATT OWENS, OF EDWARD JONES, SHARES FIVE TIPS TO START OFF 2024 FINANCIALLY HEALTHY

FINANCIAL HEALTH 40

F IN A N CIA L BU Z Z | FI NANCE + LE GAL SE RVICE S

Originally from Justus, Pennsylvania, Matt Owens fell in love with the historic district of Frederick and is grateful to call this beautiful county home. Proud father to Casey and Jack, Matt is also dedicated to his community and gives of his time and talent to several local organizations.

“...I BUILD PERSONALIZED STRATEGIES TO HELP MY CLIENTS ACHIEVE WHAT’S MOST IMPORTANT TO THEM.” WHAT DO YOU WANT PEOPLE TO KNOW ABOUT YOU?

I grew up working at Miller’s Orchard at age 13. This is where my love for the outdoors stems, and the reason I chose to attend Penn State University for the Landscape Contracting degree. After working for 26 great years for two firms in Maryland, I was prepared to change my career to join Edward Jones. I have been a client myself since 2009 and I now enjoy sitting at the other side of the table. I also obtained my MBA from Hood College and had an amazing experience. (This only served to tie me to Frederick all the more.)

TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR ROLE AS A FINANCIAL PLANNER.

I am focused on the serious, longterm investor. I help individual clients

as well as business owners with comprehensive financial planning. I obtained my Certified Financial Planner CFP® designation and this has helped me focus on helping clients not only with their finances but to engage their CPA and Estate Planning Attorney to work as a team. I have an established process where I build personalized strategies to help my clients achieve what’s most important to them.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT THE WORK YOU DO?

I take great pride in handling something as important as one’s finances and future goals...I take pride in being a fiduciary; I believe in protecting individual investors in this complex financial industry...helping people and making a meaningful difference in their lives.

WHAT SERVICES DO YOU PROVIDE?

In addition to being a Series 7 and Series 66 licensed Financial Planner, I am licensed to provide life, disability, long term care insurance and annuities as a strategy for clients who meet the criteria. As a Fiduciary, I am focused on getting my clients the best coverage at the best price...Have your financial planner review your existing policies, so you do not have any surprises (lapsed policies, increased premiums) later in life.

WHAT ARE FIVE SPECIFIC THINGS PEOPLE CAN DO TO IMPROVE THEIR FINANCIAL HEALTH? 1. Plan for the unexpected. You will want to have an adequate amount of emergency savings (3 to 6 months minimum). 2. Prepare for retirement. Preparing for retirement is more than just saving for retirement. Maintaining physical health, as well as mental health, is important. Did you know that 68% of Americans do not have a clear idea of what their retirement health or long-term care costs will be? Please make sure to discuss retirement with your financial planner—you need to develop a plan. 3. Protect your future (and your loved ones). From disability to life or long-term care (LTC) protection, it is important to have a plan for how you and your loved ones will pay for LTC costs (which are

42

F IN A N CIA L BU Z Z | FI NANCE + LE GAL SE RVICE S

“I TAKE PRIDE IN...HELPING PEOPLE AND MAKING A MEANINGFUL DIFFERENCE IN THEIR LIVES.” skyrocketing due to people living longer and health care costs increasing at an alarming rate.) The future costs of health care with inflation are a big concern for depleting the retirement assets saved. 4. Save for retirement now. There is a cost to waiting. Retirees, on average, began saving for retirement at age 38 and say that they should have started nearly 10 years earlier. Insurance costs more as one ages and one may not be insurable tomorrow when they are insurable today. Time is the one thing money cannot buy; the power of compounding (time invested) will have an impact on your overall retirement income. 5. Remember that time in the market is more important than timing the market. I focus on building personalized portfolios for my clients using high-quality investments for the long term. Staying invested during down markets is something I regularly discuss. There is a difference between fluctuation and loss.

A W I N N I NG M I N D SE T Coach Ed Corporal of the Frederick Flying Cows Models How Perseverance and Determination Can Help to Overcome Any Obstacle

ARTICLE BY KRISTEN WOJDAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRIS MARTIN OF CONVOY CREATIVES

During his growing-up years in Kansas City, Kansas, Ed Corporal first fell in love with basketball as the ball boy for the Kansas City Kings. He managed the locker room and bench for the visiting teams and made sure the players and coaches had everything they needed. His older brother played for the NBA team, so Ed had the chance to sit around some of his “childhood idols.” He recalled, “I actually had the chance to be around Dr. J, Magic Johnson and George Gervin—those old-school athletes. They used to come to my house because my mom cooked dinner for them when they were in town. To me, they were just regular people.” Ed played basketball in high school and college; but, it wasn’t until years later when he was living in Maryland that he earned the title “Coach” with a team of fifth graders through a Parks & Recreation league. What started out as a fun way to serve the community became his passion and calling. An impressive 38 years later, Coach Ed Corporal is the winningest coach in The Basketball League (TBL), a professional Men’s basketball league that launched in the U.S. in 2018, and has expanded to over 49 teams as of 2023. He has been with TBL since its inception and has led his teams to a winning season each year. In 2021, Coach Ed led the Enid Outlaws to win the TBL National Championship. That team holds the TBL record for the most wins in a season (30-3) and the most wins in the regular season (22-2). “Hopefully we will do that same thing here in Frederick. That’s the plan,” Coach Ed explained. Coach Ed will lead the Frederick Flying Cows in their inaugural year in TBL. During the process of bringing the team to Frederick, owners Michael Witt and Tony Mazlish met Coach Ed when they were accidentally sitting at his table. When Coach Ed discovered the aspiring TBL owners were from Maryland, they had an instant connection, because his five children and six grandchildren all live there. He wanted to live closer to his family.

After a few phone calls, “They came to Oklahoma to see me coach; then we talked and the rest is history,” he recalled. “For years I drove by Frederick...In my wildest dreams, I never realized I would end up here. It has come full circle. I started my coaching career in Maryland...My kids and grandkids are here. It’s the perfect fit.” “I love Frederick! It reminds me of Kansas... Frederick has a Midwest feel. People are very nice and hospitable...I love the City of Frederick…I love the shops and restaurants...The people are great!” Coach Ed exclaimed. “And, the energy level for the team coming here is wonderful. People are opening their arms...I’ve been doing this for seven years and this has been the most receptive city that I’ve experienced. I’m really looking forward to it!” In this season of celebration and excitement, Coach Ed is also celebrating his tenyear anniversary as a stroke survivor. He feels that perseverance and determination (what he calls a “winning mindset”) were never more important than when he suffered two massive strokes in September 2013. “I’m a walking miracle. I’m not even supposed to be here,” Coach began. “Ten years ago, I suffered two massive strokes...my entire left side was paralyzed. I couldn’t walk or use my left arm...Everything went wrong...The doctors didn’t think I was going to make it.” At the time, Coach Ed was coaching a high school team; he realized he had to lead by example, “because everything I had ever talked to my players—and my own kids—about was perseverance, fighting through adversity, being mentally tough, etc. I had to do that now. I was very driven.” Coach Ed had a long road to recovery as he lived at Lawrence Hospital for four months and then at a rehab center for an additional two months. “The one thing that kept me going was that I was doing work at KU (Kansas University),” he shared. “The coach invited me to come to practice...That gave me some hope...I was in a wheelchair for about two

years...Going through the recovery after the stroke was the hardest thing I have ever had to do in my life. I wanted my kids to be proud. I worked hard because I wanted to show them that no matter what obstacles are thrown at you, you can fight through it. They were my inspiration.” Once he was able to move around, he improved his mobility each year. Coach Ed saw another stroke survivor slowly walking and thought, “If I can just do that, I will be okay. Then, once I started to stand and then walk, everything took off...I was driving, coaching and able to go back to my normal life. Maybe not as fast, but I was able to do everything I did before. I have limitations sometimes, but it never stops me.” Coach Ed was able to walk his daughter down the aisle at her wedding and dance with his youngest daughter at her quinceañera, about a year after the stroke. “These are some of my proudest moments,” he shared. “I have come a long way…I’m limping a little bit, but I’m walking.” He continued, “I was in a wheelchair and now I’m walking and driving. I don’t take these things for granted. I’m just thankful that God still had some things He wanted me to do.”

Coach Ed reflected on his coaching journey, “Growing up in the NBA and being around the players…prepared me to be a coach...Coaching is my calling...It’s about more than basketball; it’s about relationships...I get great satisfaction seeing guys grow up and reach their goals and come back with a family and they have done well...Of course, we want to win. But, I want to see each of them win as a whole person.” “Hopefully how I lead my life makes a difference.” He elaborated, “I always tell my players that what I went through with the stroke doesn’t stop me or define me. It’s what I do with it…I tell them, the kids are watching you. You’re impacting some of these kids’s lives and you don’t even know it. I tell them they are here with me for a reason.” When asked what he wants people to know about him, Coach Ed shared, “Not only am I a survivor of a massive stroke, I’m a people person. I love people. I’m a family man. I love my family. I’m a man of God. I wouldn’t be here without God getting me through it and a lot of prayers…I’m thankful to be coaching, to be doing what I love. I’m excited to be a part of this community and work with the players. I’ve come full circle and I’m excited.” GoFlyingCows.com

“Hopefully how I lead my life makes a difference. I always tell my players that what I went through with the stroke doesn’t stop me or define me. It’s what I do with it…I tell them, the kids are watching you. You’re impacting some of these kids’s lives and you don’t even know it. I tell them they are here with me for a reason.”

Tips for a Healthy, Bright Smile in 2024! ARTICLE BY DR. KEVIN OAKES

D R .

K E V I N O A K E S D D S , F A C P

@DentalArtsOfFrederick | DentalArtsOfFrederick.com

TIPS FOR MAINTAINING A STRONG AND VIBRANT SMILE: Replace Your Toothbrush Your toothbrush is a superhero in the fight against cavities, but even heroes need a refresh. Swap out your toothbrush every 3 to 4 months. Instead of using a toothbrush cap, rinse your toothbrush with mouthwash occasionally for extra cleanliness. Timing is Everything If you love indulging in acidic delights like sodas or citrus fruits, hold off on brushing immediately afterward. The acid softens your enamel, and brushing too soon can erode it further. Instead, wait for an hour before brushing to allow your enamel to re-harden. Embrace Crunchy Veggies and Fruits Besides being a nutritional powerhouse, crunchy fruits and vegetables stimulate saliva flow, a natural defense against gum disease and cavities. Foods like celery and carrots not only promote saliva production but also provide essential nutrients for strong teeth. Dr. Kevin Oakes, a dedicated prosthodontist, has made Frederick his cherished home.
