The Style Edition

Imagine the world for a moment devoid of style. Everything always the same, monotonous and predictable. Sad thought, right? Something about the process of bringing this edition to life has created a deeper appreciation for the impact style has on our human experience.

Style is not limited to the clothes we wear or how we accessorize—it encompasses every aspect of our lives.

From the way we decorate our homes and curate our social media platforms to how we carry ourselves in conversations, style permeates every facet of our existence.

It is deeply personal and develops as we celebrate our quirks, passions and interests. It is a form of self-expression that communicates who we are, how we perceive the world and what we value. In this way, style becomes a powerful tool for connection, as it enables us to find common ground with others who share our unique likings.

As individuals, we have the freedom to embrace established styles, blend them together or forge entirely new paths, becoming trendsetters ourselves.

We hope this edition inspires you to embrace the world of style in its many forms and fashions. We cannot wait for you to ooh and aww at the beauty that awaits! Step back in time with our stunning vintage photo shoot, discover some of the latest hair trends for men, celebrate one of our favorite local jeweler’s big milestone and more.

There is so much here in Frederick to uplift our spirits, ignite our creativity and help our unique styles flourish. Consider trying something new this season that may just make your heart sing!

On another note, September is National Recovery Month and Frederick County is Going Purple! To help raise awareness of substance use disorders and ways we can support our community, please visit FrederickCountyGoesPurple.com.

Here’s to being uniquely you!

COLONIAL JEWELERS

Here’s to 75 Years (and Beyond)

LOCAL LIMELIGHT | STYLE + BEAUTY

A Culmination of Hard Work, Integrity and Love

There on the bustling corner of 1 South Market Street, the building of Colonial Jewelers looms in stately elegance. Formerly housing the Maryland National Bank, the two-story edifice is hard to miss, with beautifully decorated windows and a guard always keeping watch.

To be sure, the interior is yet another level of grandeur, boasting high ceilings, graceful chandeliers, crystal-clear displays, and of course, gorgeous jewelry. Yet behind those doors is something still more precious— and even surprising—than the stones they have to offer: a local, hard-working family spanning four generations who love just as hard as they work.

On May 24th of 2023, Colonial Jewelers held their 75th Anniversary Celebration, officially making them the oldest business in downtown Frederick. While this is a monumental milestone in and of itself, it’s not all they were celebrating that evening. During the event, previous owners Jeff and Patty Hurwitz officially passed the baton to their daughter, Sarah Hurwitz Robey. This multigenerational family business now spans four generations, a fact that not many companies can boast. So how did they get here?

Colonial Jewelers (originally Colombia Jewelers) was born in the early 1900s by Ben Hurwitz, a skilled clockmaker from Belarus. With time, it seamlessly grew into a multigenerational family business when one of his sons, Will, opened a new location in Frederick with his wife Marilyn in 1948. Will and Marilyn started the Frederick business from scratch and turned it into one of the foremost jewelers in the area through their hard work and customer service. During that time they shifted their focus to diamonds and jewelry exclusively, and 30 years later, Will and Marilyn passed the business on to their son and his wife, Jeff and Patty Hurwitz. Now, their daughter Sarah is beginning her stretch as the fourth-generation owner of their long-standing business. That being said, while their family lineage is certainly something to marvel at, it isn’t the only factor that has contributed to their incredible success all these years.

From the moment they opened up shop on North Market Street, Will and Marilyn Hurwitz were wholeheartedly committed to the downtown Frederick

community—but not just when it was thriving. In 1974, the Frederick Towne Mall opened its doors, and most restaurants and retailers downtown left to claim their spot in the new attraction. “...downtown was super depressed and vacant,” Jeff Hurwitz recalled, and only two years later, downtown Frederick would take another hit—this time in the form of a flood that forced many retailers to completely close their doors. Nevertheless, the Hurwitz family was determined to stay. They had fallen in love with this community, and as a result, they were committed to staying a part of it.

“...it’s really an accepting community—very accepting,” Jeff explained. “People move in from wherever they move in…and I think they're all very well received, …I know other towns are not like that.” And so, to the community that had given so much to them, they were giving back, taking a risk and putting in the work to stay through the drought, even when everyone else was leaving.

Years passed and Jeff and Patty Hurwitz would be next to take the mantle, but the thread of this family’s commitment to the surrounding community remained as strong as ever. They continued to find new and creative ways to show their love for downtown Frederick–even in the face of life changing circumstances.

In 1999, Patty was suddenly diagnosed with breast cancer. They were shocked and devastated by the news, but it wasn’t long before Patty thought of a way to use her struggle to benefit her community.

At the time of her diagnosis, Patty had to travel to Baltimore because of the lack of resources in Frederick. But instead of simply buckling down and getting through her treatment, she immediately looked outside of herself. “I think that when things do happen to you, if you can turn it into something good or make something better out of it, then that’s part of your healing…” Patty shared. “It was a way we could use our business, because I remember thinking, ‘How can we use what we have and what we know how to do and raise money?’” So with that mindset, she set out to find a way to provide the advanced technology that saved her life in Baltimore for the people of Frederick. The result? The Hurwitz Breast Cancer Fund, dedicated to equipping Frederick Health with the newest and most advanced technology for early

detection and treatment of breast cancer, of which 100% of the proceeds go towards these expenses. And this was no one-time endeavor. Between their annual Pink Ribbon Gala and Pink Ribbon 5k, they have raised over three million dollars since establishing the Fund. Still, they haven’t made it to 75 years on commitment alone.

Since its founding, the family behind Colonial Jewelers has been just as committed to the Golden Rule as they have been to Frederick in every aspect of the business. Everything they do is done with love, respect, and consideration—an overflow of their familial backbone. They’ve established business hours that allow their staff to have weekends off and weeknights free. They commit to high-quality jewelry and stones that will last and are worth the price yet have financing options to fit every budget. They go above and beyond to take care of their people, so it’s no wonder the community loves them. They love well, and thus they are easy to love—and Sarah Hurwitz Robey plans to keep the spark alive.

Patty was not surprised when Sarah followed in her footsteps.

“She actually started coming to work when she was two weeks old,” Patty recalled. “I just brought her with me, and we had a little office in the back and she had her little swing…so she was sort of indoctrinated at an early age.” Early on, Sarah expressed interest in the business. “When she was three years old she said, ‘I wanna work in the store’, and she would come in and sit on Jeff’s lap and sort the little tiny diamonds. That was like her favorite thing to do.” And it wasn’t just toddler talk. Often wanting to play store and find something to sell, her interest grew unwaveringly as she grew.

Sarah, too, recalls being intrigued with the business as a young girl, but it wasn’t simply overhearing all the grown ups talk about “the store” that piqued her interest.

“I always tell people the reason I think I love it so much is they never pushed me,” Sarah shared. “They never said, ‘Sarah, you’re the heir’…that made me want to do it, because I didn’t ever feel like this is expected of me—it didn’t feel like a burden. It felt like a very big blessing.”

Today, Sarah has earned her place as the next generation of Colonial Jewelers. Not only has she obtained a Business Degree from Virginia Commonwealth University and Graduate Gemologist Degree from the Gemological Institute of America, but she also started at the bottom, just like everyone else.

“I’m very proud to say I’ve done every job that exists in the store,” Sarah shared. “That was a great approach that mom and dad had to teach me the business, not just come in and make up a role for me because I was family.”

Suffice it to say that Sarah’s well prepared for the tall task of carrying the torch. In fact, she's already spearheaded some major projects for the business that have taken it to the next level—such as their stunning renovation and rebrand in 2021. The historic building received a transformative upgrade under Sarah’s direction, boasting a more accessible case layout and a transformed mezzanine area among other things. She also led the way for utilizing 3D printing into their process and led the transition from a manual system to a digital one.

And while she intends to keep the values of past generations that have become so characteristic of Colonial Jewelers alive, she also has a vision of her own for the company.

“...My ideal scenario would be anyone in the Frederick community, when they think they need a jeweler, they would also think Colonial first…” Sarah shared, “and they would feel like they could come shop here…there’s no reason why you wouldn’t buy from Colonial…”.

It’s no secret that Colonial Jewelers only sells and creates high quality jewelry, but it’s not just for profit’s sake. “We’ve never wanted to sell something that might look pretty and then break a week later because it’s shoddy quality…my grandfather always said he'd rather justify the price than apologize for the quality,” she explained. “People know that if they buy something from here it's going to last and we’re going to stand behind it...”

At the same time, Sarah doesn’t want their reputation for high-quality jewelry to make them feel unapproachable to some within the community. Instead, she hopes that people with all kinds of budgets feel confident that they, too, are welcome and able to shop with Colonial. We have a feeling that won’t be too difficult with the legacy of love that her predecessors left behind and that runs in the family.

Colonial Jewelers has certainly earned its 75th year in downtown Frederick, and Sarah has earned her place as the fourth generation owner of the well-esteemed family business. Here’s to 75 years and beyond! ColonialJewelers.com

FINDING A BALANCE

Danielle Rizzo Keeps Family First While Building Businesses

While some say there aren’t enough hours in a day, Danielle Rizzo’s mission is to make every hour count, while keeping family first and building businesses that make a difference.

After being a stay-at-home mom for eleven years, a change in lifestyle prompted Danielle to find a way to “stay present” while supporting herself and her four children, two of which have ongoing health issues.

Armed with a degree in Communications and Journalism from Hood College (2006) and faith in herself, Danielle created Marielle Agency, a consulting firm that helps business owners find more efficient ways of running their businesses, as well as implement forward thinking growth marketing plans.

“I had to find a way to make it work. I started this company out of a necessity to live and still have my presence there for my children,” said Danielle, who has four children—Cadence, 15, Branson, 13, Kinsley, 10 and Daulton, 6.

With 15 years of experience working with business owners (including her father), Danielle said she started her agency in 2018 by reaching out and offering assistance to companies online.

“I realized I have a certain skill set so I just started cold calling—reaching out to businesses via social media and direct messages—to offer assistance with streamlining tasks and other organizational and marketing aspects,” she explained, noting that she was sending about fifty messages daily before landing her first client, a California-based company she discovered via Instagram. “I want to help business leaders think outside-of-the-box and give them some of their time back.”

Over the past five years, Marielle Agency has grown its resume to include working with real estate brokers, marketing companies, fundraising organizations, Fab Fit Fun subscription service and Disney Jr, just to name a few.

“I started my business pre-Covid, before people understood the world of working remote. It has only been in recent years that I started picking up local clients,” said Danielle, who has been a member of the Frederick community since moving here at the age of five from Staten Island with her family; a family who still plays a very big role in her life, not only through serving

as a support system to her and her children as she follows her dreams, but also through special traditions like Sunday dinners.

“Family is so important to me. Growing up my parents taught me so many things about the importance of family and traditions that I am carrying out with my children,” Danielle said, noting that her family continues to gather regularly to build those special memories with the grandchildren.

In 2021, Danielle expanded her entrepreneurship by creating Ever Loved, a children’s minimalist apparel company, after noting a need for clothing that wasn’t filled with cartoon graphics and characters. “I wanted to create clothing that is classic and timeless, but also encouraging and positive.” Not only is Ever Loved empowering the children who wear it, Danielle noted that a portion of the proceeds from apparel sales goes to the National Down Syndrome Society, an organization she volunteered with when she was a high school student at St. John’s at Prospect Hall, graduating with the Class of 2002. “I loved volunteering there. I would like to eventually grow the business to employ children with disabilities.”

In addition to making a difference in the lives of her children and clients, Danielle is spreading her wings in the local community as a member of the Key City Rotary Board, a member of the Women in Business Committee with the Frederick County Chamber of Commerce, a part of the Federated Charities Outreach Committee and an ambassador for the Frederick Co. Chamber.

Danielle also aims to pass her community awareness onto her children. Earlier this year, she created the Kids Kindness Project, an event where young volunteers filled, decorated and wrote notes for 100 bags of supplies, which were then donated to the Student Homeless Initiative Project (SHIP). “I want kids to know there are lives in our community that need assistance.” The next Kids Kindness Project will be held this fall.

Danielle said her overall goal is to help others, whether through her businesses, volunteering or other ways of reaching out in the community and online.

“I love helping and working with others in any way I can, allowing me to be an example to my children as well.”

Frederick County Housing Market Update

Doug Gardiner Gives Expert Analysis for Potential Real Estate Buyers and Sellers

EXPERT HELP | REAL ESTATE
34

The real estate market has been quickly changing nationwide. As we move through 2023, interest rates have climbed and a low inventory of available homes has led to homes going under contract in a shorter amount of time.

Doug Gardiner, the Managing Partner at The Maryland Group of Long & Foster, shares a recap of this summer’s real estate updates and trends, plus the changes he sees ahead.

“Currently there’s a huge shortage affecting real estate in drastic ways,” Doug said. “Over time, rates should have been inching up, but instead, we saw higher interest rates all of a sudden.”

Doug continues selling many homes around Frederick County and he’s noticed a lot more competition with offers. His key to standing out from the crowd is educating clients on the current real estate market and ensuring they come well prepared.

BE PREPARED FOR COMPETITION

"Inventory is down significantly this month compared to last year," Doug said. "Additionally, we saw a notable rise in properties with a price increase."

In this real estate market, Doug sees people doing what it takes to close a deal, including waiving home inspections, appraisals and other contingencies. Waiving contingencies—which refer to specific requirements set out in a contract in order for a real estate deal to close—can come with serious repercussions.

“Real estate is a communication market,” Doug said. “If a buyer doesn’t have everything they need, like additional cash, then hopefully the situation has been explained so that they understand what effect it can have on their buying power.”

The majority of Doug’s clients continue to complete home inspections, but sometimes people are comfortable with taking a risk to get what they want. Doug will craft an offer in a way that will get a homebuyer what

they need. He does, however, recommend keeping the bigger picture in mind—rather than just the home in front of you—to avoid potential buyer’s remorse.

It is important for homebuyers to have clear goals in mind before finding potential frustration by trying to learn as you go. Doug is a firm believer in having conversations with buyers to determine their level of knowledge about the real estate market trends and what to expect along the homebuying process.

“I would rather not sell the home than do things that people aren’t comfortable with,” Doug said. “But buyers need to take the right steps and need to know the process. You can’t jump into this market and not know what’s currently going on.”

THE RETURN TO OFFICE EFFECT

“Frederick seems to hold its value and it’s an extremely competitive area,” Doug said. “COVID-19 changed things drastically and the trend now is to move back to the more urban areas.”

Homes that enjoy separation from city areas with more wide, open spaces were in high demand during the COVID-19 pandemic. But for many, the additional home office and homeschooling spaces no longer fit their needs after the pandemic began to wind down, and people began to return to a city lifestyle.

“There are people going on waiting lists because the city is so competitive,” Doug said. “The convenience of walking to restaurants and other things is something that I expect will continue to appeal to buyers for a while.”

LUXURY HOME TRENDS

“It’s interesting to begin to see the trends change. These days, people are seeking the larger windows on the home and the larger doors, too,” Doug said. “They’re looking for a 10-foot door now, not a regular eight-foot.”

“Currently there’s a huge shortage affecting real estate in drastic ways. Over time, rates should have been inching up, but instead, we saw higher interest rates all of a sudden.”

Modern amenities are sought after, incentivizing more people to boost their homes with outdoor kitchens, upgraded technology, electric car charging stations and elevators. There’s also been a shift in the attitude of homebuyers when it comes to pools.

“It used to be that when buyers would see a home with a pool, the first thing they would say is that they might need to fill that in,” Doug said. “Then COVID-19 came around, and pools started becoming a request. Pools still increase the value of a home, and they provide a 50-60% return on the overall investment of the pool.”

The Frederick County real estate market remains seller-friendly while inventory has been tight. Doug predicts that downtown Frederick, Urbana, and other areas with a more urban feel will continue to experience high competition in the coming months.

“Sure, the market is competitive, but that’s why it’s important to have an agent who can make sense of what you’re able to do and communicate well with other agents,” Doug said. “Building a good relationship and explaining things the best you can is very important, but especially for first-time homebuyers.”

DOUG GARDINER, the Managing Partner of The Maryland Group of Long & Foster, is a trusted real estate advisor. As a resident of Frederick County, Doug is attentive to the changes in the real estate market, and is driven to respond quickly to what is needed for his clients. Doug recognizes the value and trust his clients place in him, and takes time to ensure that every client is well prepared before reaching an offer in this current market. MARYLANDEXPERTS.COM

I still remember how I got started shopping for and collecting vintage clothes. I was sixteen, and I’d never been into a real vintage clothing store before (this was in 2008, before vintage was quite the rage that it is today). I wandered into Frederick’s Venus on the Half Shell, having never quite understood what the store sold. I was shocked and impressed to find a retail outlet selling  only clothing from decades past. It dawned on me that I was finally surrounded by clothes reflecting how I wanted to dress! I bought my first vintage item, a blue 1950s border print skirt, and a new world opened up to me. The skirt was  almost too small, but it didn’t matter—I now realized it was an option to dress with the elegance I had previously only seen in old movies and books.

Of course, there’s a lot more to vintage than the ‘50s elegance of Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly, but that was my entry point to this slice of the fashion world. Read on to learn more about how to get started scouting and buying vintage clothes, and why this is an increasingly attractive option in a world of homogeneity and fast fashion.

1)  Locate a vintage store and gin up some inspiration!

If you’ve never shopped vintage before, it’s helpful to know what you’d be looking for, ideally, and why. You may wish to think about which eras of vintage fashion mesh the best with your current style, or eras that inspire you which might allow you to try something different. Popular shows like  Mad Men , The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel , and Halston have recently done a great job of showing what’s possible in terms of timeless vintage outfits. You may also want to visit a vintage store with the intention of simply browsing and dipping your toe in the waters. Always expect the unexpected when shopping vintage! It’s often about finding that perfect unique piece you’re sure no one else will be wearing.

2)  Go with an open mind, and expect to try things on.

Because vintage stores stock clothing from a variety of different eras, sizing isn’t standardized. Even if something is labeled a size 10, for instance, it definitely won’t be the same as a size 10 today. Shopping for vintage isn’t the same as going to a department store, pulling your typical size off the rack, and knowing it will probably fit (if you don’t like to spend a lot of time shopping, or tend to shop in a rush). Shopping vintage is all about stimulating your creativity – you will have to sort through the rack in order to find those hidden gems! Especially if timeless vintage is your aim, it may take a bit of searching to bypass pieces that feel dated and era-specific. But finding what works for you is all the more rewarding!

3) If you feel intimidated at first, bring a friend!

Taking the time to really sort through clothing racks doesn’t feel comfortable to everyone, but bringing someone along, sharing ideas, and making a fun day of it can ensure that your first experience with vintage shopping is a good one (whether you find anything or not!).

This 1950s hand-embroidered satin caftan is the stuff that loungewear dreams are made of. (Unlabeled, Vintage MC, $59)

4) Expect to find higher-quality construction and materials at a reasonable price.

This does depend on where you shop, but by and large, you’ll be able to find clothes made in the U.S.A. under higher standards of production for less than the cost of contemporary department store clothing. Quality materials such as heavy satin, silk faille, and 100% wool are common. Vintage coats, in particular, are often gorgeous, high-quality, and enormously cost-effective for the price. Clothing tends to be more structured, fitted, and less flimsy. It’s definitely not athleisure, but a good vintage piece can last you (and generate compliments!) for years to come. Purchasing vintage clothing is also about transitioning to a mindset of true stewardship of our “things.”

In a world where the fast fashion industry is one of the top generators of waste and pollution, not to mention unfair working conditions, purchasing vintage often allows us to be the change we wish to see. The wonderful thing about fashion is that at some point, everything old always becomes new again, and runway shows bear witness to the fact that designers recycle historical trends over and over. Vintage and thrift shopping used to get a bad rap – why would one purchase anything old when being in style is all about  new? – but those who embrace vintage today are the real trendsetters and innovators. In the past, clothing wasn’t meant to be disposable; it was meant to be beautiful, durable, and unique, and I think only good can come of holding ourselves to that standard again.

FITNESS

I have been a certified personal trainer for almost 10 years and a nutritionist for 3 years. My goal with Mount Olympus is to help as many people as I can learn how to live a healthy lifestyle that makes them feel good and adds longevity to their bodies. I offer private personal trainings in the gym or at your own home, virtual training sessions and fitness classes for those who want to be around other like minded individuals!

LIFESTYLE APPAREL

BOXING, FITNESS, STYLE AND INSPIRATION ALL IN ONE

Steve Sparks, also known as "Captain America" by his fitness clients, seems to be more like Superman as he continues to pursue his dreams to become a professional boxer and funds this dream with his new lifestyle apparel brand Just Livin' Clothing Co.—all while running his personal training and lifestyle business, Mount Olympus Fitness and Boxing, located inside of Jaspers Corner Boxing Gym in Frederick. Here are some excerpts from his very inspirational story:

BOXING

I have competed in amateur boxing for the past seven years at some of the highest levels. I was the 2022 Washington D.C State and five state regional Golden Gloves Champion earning my place on the 2022 Washington DC National Golden Gloves team. I won the Baltimore Boxing East Coast Heavyweight Championship and was selected to represent Frederick, Maryland on the U.S. team. Now, I am on my journey to compete as a professional boxer.

In 2021, I launched my own clothing line, Just Livin' Clothing Co., to help pay for the training costs of competitive boxing. I like using my clothing line to spread positive, encouraging and motivating messages to everyone who not only buys something but to anyone who might see the designs...you never know how much someone may have needed a positive message that day.

MOTIVATION

During my teen years, I suffered from a genetic defect that would cause my knee caps to dislocate. By the time I was 17, I dislocated my knees almost 30 times. I was diagnosed with a genetic defect and after a few major surgeries, it was corrected. I had a Tibial tuberosity osteotomy (TTO) with quad reconstruction on both legs within three months of each other.

As a result of spending months in a wheel chair during my recovery, I struggled with mental battles of depression and anxiety, even drug addiction from the use of pain killers. I felt stuck—inside my head, in the wheelchair, in my room, in pain. I spent 13 years in physical therapy. During this time I learned about the body and how muscles worked and responded.

During that time of pain and inactivity, I gained a lot of weight, at one point weighing 350 pounds! What motivated me the most to get my

TREND SETTER | HEALTH + WELLNESS
50

health under control was when a cardiologist told me I had left side ventricle dysplasia. I was put on bed rest again and was told if my heart rate became high enough, I could go into cardiac arrest and die.

After a long season of tests, I was finally cleared to begin my journey again; this time I was going to become the healthiest version of myself! I lost a total of 150 pounds over the next 18 months. Not only did my overall health improve, but the pain in my knees had become almost tolerable. Now, I work everyday to make sure my body is able to carry me into my golden years and continue "just livin'" my most adventurous life I can!

INSPIRATIONAL QUOTE

"I can do this all day!" (Captain America Steve Rogers). Why? Because my life has felt like a constant battle and having the courage to stand up and continue on no matter how big or scary the obstacles are is something that I use to not only inspire myself every day but also my clients.

BIG GOAL

To open my own gym location that offers a wide variety of options for people to become the healthiest version of themselves; a place where people can come to encourage and motivate each other to continue making progress toward their fitness goals as a community.

WHY?

I became a personal trainer and lifestyle coach because I’m passionate about helping as many people as I can live their healthiest lives. JustLivinClothingCo.com

BARBER SHOP KEEPS IT STYLISH

GENTLEMEN’S CHOICE CONTINUES TO BE A CUT ABOVE THE REST AFTER 51 YEARS IN FREDERICK

There’s nothing like the sounds of a busy barber shop—electric razors buzzing, hair dryers humming, scissors snipping, phones ringing and music playing.

Above this constant chorus at Gentlemen’s Choice Barber Shop are the steady bellows of laughter and conversations of daily lives. Customers are warmly greeted entering the shop, welcoming those with appointments as well as those who simply walk-in.

Originally opened in 1972, in the Frederick Towne Mall, Gentlemen’s Choice has been a fixture in the Frederick Community for 51 years, moving to its current location on West Patrick Street in 2006.

Longtime employee Amanda Blumenauer started at the shop 39 years ago after the original owner, Dick Beckley, recruited her from Camp Hill Barber Styling Institute. Kevin Fogg started at the shop 29 years ago after finishing his schooling at the same facility. The pair purchased the business in April 2019.

“We work really well together,” said Kevin.

The Covid Pandemic struck less than one year after Amanda and Kevin took over, but a supportive

team and loyal customers helped them stay afloat, despite the government-mandated shut down. “The minute we could open the doors, we were swamped,” said Amanda. “We were excited to reunite with our clients, helping them get their styles back.”

With twelve barbers and cosmetologists, Gentlemen’s Choice offers services for clients of all ages and hair types. “We are not only for men, but the entire family,” said Amanda, noting the stylists work together to help clients determine the cuts they want.

“We know the strengths of each other. We have a team with extensive experience,” Kevin agreed. A team that also functions as a family. “We put family first always—so if one of us needs something, we help each other out,” Amanda said.

Both Kevin and Amanda average about 20-25 cuts per day each, and agree that they enjoy getting to know their clients—some they have had for decades. “Now I am cutting their children’s hair. Building those relationships is special,” said Kevin.   GentlemensChoiceBarberStylist.com

2023 FALL HAIR TRENDS

“As far as trends, really everything goes; right now it’s more about embracing the hair you have. We have requests for a lot of different styles,” Amanda said. Below are some of the most popular requests:

Permed Mullet: The mullet keeps it short in the front and sides, while allowing the back to be longer. Perming the back has become popular among clients.

Skin Fade: The skin fade refers to a faded haircut, where the bottom back portion is skin that fades gradually into the hair as it goes up the head.

Uncut Cut: This style has a tight fade in the back and longer on top, many times swooping into the face. Perming the longer top portion is popular, while some clients keep the longer portion more unkempt.

Perms: Chemically making the hair curly has come back into popularity for both men and women. A more layered shaggy perm has become popular for Fall.

Flat Top: Clippered on the side, the top of this style has an upright, flat top.

Messy Malibu: More like a surfer/beachy look, this cut features a wavy perm and shaggy length.

Taper Cut: Cut close in the back, but at more of a ½ inch - 2 inch length instead of skin, this style is shorter on top with a combover.

Sedona's New Day Spa For A New You

JOURNAL | TRAVEL

Relaxed, Rejuvenated and Ready for a New Day

Sedona is a much loved destination. It touches people in many different ways. The visual beauty is stunning. You can hike trails that are fun or challenging. There’s an energy and a hint of mysticism. Sedona also has great food, artisans and experiential pampering. I was delighted to experience first-hand several rejuvenating services in this peaceful location with a few friends.

As we passed under the arch to Sedona’s New Day Spa, we were greeted with the words  “Welcome to your private retreat.” They could also say, “A special day for a special you.”

Immediately, I noticed how each guest is treated as if they were a long time favorite.

“Many people come to Sedona at a crossroads in their lives with the need to make decisions—personal and career,” said Jill Galea, co-owner of Sedona’s New Day Spa. “The focus of our spa is to provide calm and a special place to find peace.

We want our guests to understand how important it is to care for themselves. It means everything to your future health and makes you happier.”

CELEBRATE ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING

Guests also come to Sedona’s New Day Spa to celebrate. The associates joyfully host parties for groups as diverse as bridal parties, graduation celebrations and male mountain bike riders. Many parents and teenage children make it a part of their Sedona visit. Galea has also noticed an interesting trend among women, as they are often now choosing to get together at a spa rather than over lunch.

“It’s a wonderful honor and opportunity; a gift to us, in fact, when we are able to help our guests celebrate different aspects of their lives,” Galea shared. “We love helping to create memories.”

When Galea moved the spa a few years ago, the new location presented the oppor-

tunity to create open relaxation spaces. S he was inspired to fully incorporate and enrich aspects of nature. “We had conscious intentions to honor the forefathers of the land,” Galea said. The healing, peace, tranquility and rejuvenation aspects she incorporated make her spa very “Sedona-esque.”

SACRED PARTNERS

“We are on sacred land,” Galea shared. “There is so much history here. You can feel the energy. The experiences we offer enable people to tune in to the Sedona energy, history and into themselves... Whichever service our guests choose, we are honored when they allow us to be partners in their rejuvenation.”

American sweat lodge. Becoming a therapist for this experience requires a long training period with a considerable amount of spiritual training in addition to the technical aspects of the steam canopy. Sedona’s New Day Spa is the only local facility providing this Native American inspired spa treatment to the public.

“Sedona’s New Day Spa is a magical place that brings one to a singular relaxation experience,” said Rebecca LaChance, a concurrent guest with me. “From the first touch of the therapist in my Southwest Steam Experience, I felt at ease placing myself into her hands. I now feel deeply refreshed. Plus, I feel filled with a new wisdom of self-care.”

FEELING THE DESERT VIBE

“The Desert Nature Body Treatments focus on relaxation, exfoliation and being beautiful,” said Galea. “Each treatment uses hand-crafted body butters, oils and lotions developed exclusively for us with locally-crafted, indigenous and organic ingredients.” Five different ninety-minute experiences with exfoliation and massages are offered.

The  Turquoise Sage Mountain Arnica treatment brings relief to muscle and joint tension and stimulates total body circulation.

The  Prickly Pear Pomegranate is the ultimate treatment for stressed or aging skin.

The  Cedarwood Citrus Wild Chaparral treatment—using a product made especially for this spa and warm riverbed stones for massage—is a “desert” treatment focused on grounding. “Our treatments incorporate elements found in the local environment,” Galea shared. “They are relaxing, rejuvenating and provide clarity, as well as being a wonderful experience.”

SWEAT LODGE INSPIRED

I chose the traditional body-cleansing and spirit-purifying Native American-inspired  Steamy Spa Experience. The personalized journey began with a facilitated acknowledgment of my inner focus and concerns. Next, I received a thorough exfoliating body scrub and organic detox oil rub before the steam canopy was lowered over me. I laid there warm and relaxed while the therapist performed a soothing marma-therapy head massage. With my approval, the steam tent was pulled up over my head for a total body cleansing. After the steam, I was covered in warm towels to keep all those pores open as my full body was massaged with a Rosemary Mint Coconut Butter. When the therapist finished, I was a limp noodle.  My friend, Karen Smith, who participated in the Steamy Spa Experience after me, had spent her time waiting in the large hot tub. “What a wonderful place to relax and rejuvenate!” she said later. “Along with that soulful and relaxing massage, the experience stayed with me long after I finished.”

RELAXED AND REJUVENATED

A Trip Advisor reviewer wrote, “I live in Phoenix, but the drive to Sedona is worth it! Sedona has plenty of other massage options, including high-end resorts with spa services. But, none of them feel the same nor provide the level of experience I’m looking for. I’ll keep going back to Sedona’s New Day Spa!”

Wherever you come from and whatever experience you choose, you’ll accomplish exactly what Galea intends. You will be relaxed and rejuvenated. As you walk out the door, you’ll hear her words, “Enjoy your new day.”  SedonaNewDaySpa.com
