Happy February, Frederick! Love is in the air and it’s not just the romantic kind. We’re talking LOVE for all things LOCAL. There’s so much to love about our community! We feel privileged to be able to shine a spotlight on the good all around us as beautifully portrayed in our one-of-a-kind custom cover by beloved local artist, Yemi Fagbohun. We hope this magazine brings a ray of sunshine and sense of belonging into your homes each month. In the spirit of appreciation for all things Frederick, I asked my friend and mentor Rick Weldon, President & CEO of the Frederick County Chamber of Commerce, what he thinks makes this county extra special and he said this; “We’re surrounded by natural beauty, a bounty of resources, art and culture, and a thriving business climate and innovation. All of those blessings contribute to what makes us what we are, but it’s the spirit of true community and compassion that makes us truly special.” We could not agree more. We have been inspired time and time again by the many people who are investing so much of themselves to unite, support and move our county forward. Most of their hard work and service happens behind the scenes but we are fortunate enough to pull back the curtain through the stories we tell. Featured in the pages ahead are some deserving individuals and organizations who embody the spirit of “local love”. From servant-hearted leaders at Woodsboro Bank and FCBIA to fun and loving couples in business together, we’re excited to shaçre this edition with you. February is Black Heritage Month and we know one way you can celebrate. Kicking off Saturday the 4th and running through the end of the month, Yemi Fagbohun, in collaboration with the AARCH Society, will be showcasing a new “Legacy” series at Gaslight Gallery to honor current African American leaders and heroes who are making an impact in our community. We hope you check it out! And don’t forget to let those around you know how much you love and appreciate them. I’ll start! Woodsboro Bank supports over 50 community organizations. While funding entities that are clients or related to clients is a priority, it is not an exclusion. The diversity of their support ranges through the United Way, Community Living, Frederick County Chamber, Mission of Mercy, Oktoberfest, the Religious Coalition, Heritage Frederick, SOAR (Supporting Older Adults through Resources), the Great Frederick Fair, and the YMCA to one of the newest recipients, Woman to Woman Mentoring. There are also the numerous donations in response to a note from a 4-H member requesting a Great Frederick Fair sponsorship. Through the pandemic, Woodsboro Bank maintained their annual sponsorship of the Women’s Giving Circle so the organization would not have to seek another sponsor during that difficult time. That’s Local Love! Their next WGC sponsorship will be for an annual event. support entities that serve those in need while not to the detriment of others. “I’m a builder,” Heine said, “as are my colleagues and Board members.” As a personal builder, Heine has been a local Rotary member for over 20 years. He served as Carroll Creek Rotary President from July 2021 – July 2022 supporting the members during Covid. Chairing the Board of the YMCA while raising funds for the South County location, recovering from two floods and engaging a new President for the Y was one of his more challenging, yet rewarding, community services. Currently, Heine serves on the Frederick County Chamber board. Other Woodsboro Bank staff members serve on the boards at United Way,, Frederick Health, Frederick County Humane Society, Friends of Gambrill Park, and more. Since 1899, Woodsboro Bank has always been involved in the community. It has a great history. After leaving for banking jobs elsewhere for a couple decades, Heine returned to Frederick and Woodsboro bank because he loved the bones and saw the potential. “I grew up in a middle class family in upstate New York. Giving back was a way of life for my family,” Heine shared. “In helping the bank help build the community, it’s about the mission and opportunities more than about the money. We’ve built the bank culture to reflect our commitment to the community. As Peter Drucker said, ‘Culture eats strategy.’ It’s important for our bank to have team members who share our vision and are willing to add their time and talent to the money the bank can contribute to help maintain Frederick County’s wonderful quality of life.” For the future, Heine is constantly working to strengthen the involvement and contributions of Woodsboro Bank and its colleagues. He strives to bring their mission and vision fully to life. Using their collective time, talents and money, he would like to increase Woodsboro Bank’s impact here in Frederick County as well as Central Maryland. You will spend a lot of time with your partner and business can bring challenges. Make sure you are on the same page and able to discuss things without it causing issues or hiccups that could impact things far outside the business…Also, shared calendars are a lifesaver! WHAT ARE THE VALUES YOU FEEL HELP YOU TO BE SUCCESSFUL TOGETHER? A core value of both of our businesses is giving back to the community. It’s part of how we met and a huge part of who we are as people and business owners. We truly believe a business can only be as strong and successful as its community. For that reason, we strive to be active participants in our community, donating and/or discounting our services, and giving back where we can.

HOW DID YOU MEET? We officially met in the library in high school. (Tom wasn’t there to study…Kathy was!) WHAT IS THE BEST PART OF BEING IN BUSINESS TOGETHER? Early on we had children—working together gave us a lot of flexibility…Other than that, we share a love for helping people.The whole working together thing has evolved and been great for us and our family. While Frederick County’s roots are in dairy and agriculture, it has also become a destination for food/spirits and our various cultural attractions. There is a great mix of people and ideas…a lot of active people who want Frederick County to be a terrific place to live,

work and raise a family. It’s our hometown and a truly caring and active community. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE OTHER COUPLES WHO ARE PLANNING TO START A BUSINESS TOGETHER? It helps if your marriage is on solid ground and your goals for the business are similar. Good communication and knowing your roles and your individual strengths are important. We definitely don’t agree on everything so being good at “picking your battles” saves the day! WHAT’S ONE THING YOU WANT PEOPLE TO KNOW? Insurance is all about managing risks in your lives and preparing for your future. You have finite dollars to spend. It’s important to separate personal time from business. When eating dinner, try really hard not to talk about work.

WHAT IS ONE OF YOUR FAVORITE MEMORIES WHILE RUNNING YOUR BUSINESS TOGETHER? In 2006, we won our first National Contractor of the Year award (CotY). The awards ceremony was held in Austin, Texas so we flew down with our whole team, along with our two sons. We were so excited to have won the award, and to have celebrated with our team and our family. WHAT’S ONE THING YOU WANT PEOPLE TO KNOW? We are just like you. After spending months getting the gallery ready and many hours hanging the art, the ribbon cutting with the Mayor and Alderpeople, the Downtown Frederick Partnership and other fellow merchants made our dream come alive. THE PASSIONATE, INNOVATIVE ARTIST WHO CREATES FROM THE HEART

Originally from Nigeria, internationally renowned artist, Yemi Fagbohun, opens up to share, “After high school, I decided to study art at a higher level because I understood that studying art in Nigeria would only take me so far because of technology. Even at a young age, I knew that. I decided to go overseas. It’s a long story, but I ended up at Pratt Institute, in New York, studying art. Of course, as a Nigerian kid I knew nothing about the world and I knew nothing about America. I just knew that America was overseas. It was really Divine intervention and guidance that said, ‘You’re going to pick Pratt.’” He could have chosen anywhere, but ended up picking one of the best arts colleges in the country in one of the biggest media markets in the country. After earning both a Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Science in Art and Communications Design, Yemi decided to freelance. He recalled, “Again, I was blessed to get a lot of work in my first week out as a freelancer. Considering, in fact, I know I wasn’t that good then. As a young artist I don’t think I was in the right mind. I think I’ve

gotten better as a mature artist. Art has to come from the heart. So, it turned out that I got all this work in the first week. That gave me the confidence to know, in fact, that I could do it as a freelancer.” His confidence, and hard work, yielded exceptional results. Yemi has created drawings for more than 100 of the Fortune 500 companies, he has illustrated several children’s books and products (earning several illustration awards, including: ADDY’s and Illustrators Club Awards), he has created over 300 postage stamps for different countries (i.e. Ghana, St. Croix, St. Vincent, Gambia, Tanzania and more.), he has designed over 200 greeting cards with his designs having been sold in stores and shops of all sizes (i.e Target, Neiman Marcus, Macy’s, Duane Reade, etc.). Yemi has done work for the New York Times, New York Post, New York News Day, Newsweek, Time Magazine—his work has been internationally everywhere. So when asked why he moved to Frederick, Maryland, he explained, “Initially, we moved here to Frederick about 26 years ago because we wanted to have kids and start our family…[professionally] I basically had to start from scratch. I decided I had to build a brand named Yemi in Frederick and then grow from there.” One of ten children, Yemi shares a tight bond with his family, who are located across the globe. He recalls, “There were 10 of us. I’m number three and I’m the first boy. We were really close as kids. We never had sibling rivalry or conflict. Even today, we are all there for each other. We use What’s App to stay in touch. We have about 45 of us—kids and grandkids—on it. Now rooted in the mountains near Cunningham Fall, Yemi has found his home. “I find Frederick to be better for my spirit than any other place that I have ever lived. When I lived in Nigeria, I never felt connected to the soil, the environment. In New York as well; it was good for business and contacts and networking, but it wasn’t good for my spirit and mind and body. I’m naturally shy… If you ask most of my friends, they would say I’m not shy. But I am…I live in the mountains…and it’s very peaceful.” When asked about his art, Yemi explains his unique approach to his craft “I decided to never specialize in a style. When I was going to college, it was during the era of Bob Peak, Steve Pasalacqua, and the like. There were the biggest illustrators at the time, when movie posters were done by illustrators. There was no photoshop. The only way to do it was to use an illustrator. Each person had their own style.” “One of my teachers said I should specialize in one style and that will be my brand style. That was unappealing to me. I liked the idea of doing different styles and being innovative. This choice has allowed me to make a living as an artist. I have been able to broadcast my broad abilities...I do many different styles. If you look at my social media, you’ll see a wide range of styles. I enjoy doing that. It would be boring

to me to do just one style over and over again. Also, I’m eternally flexible. I’ve been doing this since 1984. I’ve been through many recessions and industries, which has made it a necessity to be flexible through the changing economies…I do things partly out of necessity and partly not wanting to be bored. I need to eat and pay the bills. I need to get food on the plate…The other thing is, you have to have some kind of longevity or angle…That’s the only way to survive in the world, where technology is constantly changing.” As he reflected upon his career, Yemi shares, “One thing I would share with budding artists is to stay flexible. Put yourself in the shoes of the viewer. It sounds simple, but it’s not simple. Most artists like what they like. If you are flexible with the customer, that can drive you to innovate.” And innovate is exactly what Yemi has done throughout the years of perfecting his craft. “I like to innovate,” he says. “I like to put art on glass. I have done this in buildings and offices. Then I started to put artwork of Frederick spires and other landmarks on glass ornaments. Then, in 2007, I found a local shop to sell 100 of them. They were so popular and I sold 600! The line has been expanded to other glass items with Frederick themes. And, then I’ve expanded this concept to custom glass art in other towns in the region. I use iconic images from each town. People feel good when the pieces remind them of warm and happy memories. When you have iconic images of the towns, you capture the hearts of the people because they can see themselves and relate to it.” Yemi juggles 40-50 projects at any given time. Currently he is working on the Frederick Sports Mural which will be of historic nature and elevate tourism in Frederick. Expect the groundbreaking to take place in Spring of 2023, and the reveal of this world-record mural in Spring of 2025. And if you want to experience his new African Americans of Excellence exhibit, an artistic collaboration with Emmy Award-winning videographer Russ Hodge of Three Roads Communications and local photographer Laura Sherwood, head over to the Gaslight Gallery. The African American Resources Cultural and Heritage Society (AARCH) worked closely with Yemi to select the seven honorees featured in this inaugural, annual exhibit, to include: Rev. Rex Bowens, Tammy Davis, Ruth Dredden, Aje Hill, Jason Lee, Willie Mahone and Derek Shakleford. (See the Events section on page 56 for details.) When asked what he would most want people to know about him, Yemi humbly replied, “The best we can do is to leave a legacy for our children, that our children are good and decent human beings who can pass it along to the next generation to make this a better country and better world...I was raised in a decent family. and I continue to see that validated as we touch every part of the community...That is my role and responsibility—to help them use their time, talent and treasure to be effective and make an impact in the community.

WHAT ARE YOU EXCITED ABOUT?

My life began in Baltimore in a blue-collar family. I had the good fortune of growing up in a household where-while we couldn’t afford things like a doll house and those kinds of toys-I had a hammer and nails and we built little, tiny tables and chairs…and it was something I was very comfortable with to have a vision and put something together as a toy. So, that was my earliest childhood. I spent most of my life in Frederick County, graduating from Frederick High School in ‘87. I feel like I am a product of Frederick County because my most formative years growing up were here...My dad instilled in me a hard work ethic. He taught me to love what you do and always do your best.

Over the past 18 months we have grown significantly. I attribute this to FCBIA being present wherever possible and starting the Professional Women in Building (PWB) Council...The growth happened because that Council came on board and there was a buzz in businesses...this helps companies be more diverse and women transition and grow personally and professionally. This translates to improving the social, economic and political welfare. That is our mission. We also have a Land Use Council that’s been highly engaged from the beginning. (We’re over 63 years old.)... We are the voice of the building industry. We are approximately 230 companies that represent over 6000 employees...Our members are local people who know our community; who are intentionally and passionately engaged in the current and future growth of Frederick County.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE FCBIA?

WHY DO YOUR MEMBERS JOIN FCBIA?

This job would not have been possible for me without the journey of my career. I’ve been a part of the financial industry, education industry, non-profit industry and the legal industry. I think what’s really important is that all of those pieces really represent community. ...I literally said, “What do I want to do with my time?” Then, I’m going to be relentless about pursuing those kind of opportunities...I took out a piece of paper and I wrote down what we, as Catholics, refer to as “works of mercy.” This includes shelter the homeless, feed the hungry…these are action-oriented things. And, you don’t do them transactionally; you do them in a way that is long-term and far-reaching. And so, I asked myself, “How can I have an impact on the things I wrote down on this paper?” ...When I had the good fortune of applying to be the Executive Officer in 2021, and understanding that FCBIA builds communities…I thought, “This is too good to be true!”...Our members reflect these principles of building a community and I’m grateful to be able to serve them...I feel like I was meant to be here

The things they dealt with in the 50s and 60s, are the same things we deal with today (ie. the impact of traffic, schools, water, sewage, etc.). The members back then and today are representative of all these things: financial institutions, developers, trades people, media, education, non-profits. These are all our members because they understand that in order to effectively plan and grow a community, you have to work together. We’re very fortunate to have an extensive group of members like the Chamber of Commerce, Frederick County Association of Realtors, Economic Development of Frederick County and Frederick City, and so many more. They look to the future of how Frederick County continues to shape and grow with businesses and residents.

WHAT’S NEW WITH FCBIA? We’re trying to take trades education to the next level...we have an amazing Career and Technology Center, it’s just not big enough. There’s a waitlist and hundreds of students get turned away every year...

We have teachers who do a phenomenal job; we just don’t have a big enough institution. So, we’re partnering with FCC, as well as FCPS, to provide these entry point opportunities. The launch of Women in Trades is brand new!...Only 11 percent of the building industry employs women... When you have women in trades, you end up mentoring women of all ages...We have partnered with amazing institutions, non-profits and groups in the community. ...There is an analogy Crystal McGuire, the 2022 PWB President, inspired me when she shared, “My mother’s generation used to break the glass ceiling. Now, I’m looking in the mirror and I need to break the mirror.” Shattering the mirror is the idea of “What is holding me back?” Nothing is above me to hold me back. It’s directly in front of me...We want to help women build the confidence, but then give the community in which they work the confidence as well, that there will be a sustainable workforce of women and minorities coming into our industry.

WHAT EVENT IS FCBIA KNOWN FOR? Our Home Show (which will celebrate 50 years in 2025), is a two-day event at the Frederick Fair Grounds, that is the biggest event calling card to the community. Exhibitors get to network with each other. Home product and services meet with people face-to-face to build relationships and trust...We have the Builder Olympics, where students from the Career and Technology Center showcase HVAC, plumbing, electrical and carpentry skills as they compete in building sheds...the sheds are sold and the money goes back into the program. There are many generous sponsors for this program!

clothing, counseling, etc. They solely rely on donations and generosity of the community. They happen to be the center of food security for all of our food banks. FCBIA members decided to take this project on and do what they do best: engineer, pave, excavate, lay piping, do the legal work, get the permit…all of this and more. Everyone came together to make this happen. It wouldn’t be possible without ALL of the contractors giving in-kind (labor or materials); most especially the Ausherman Family Foundation and the Home Builders Care Foundation of Maryland, who each gave over six figures to make this project possible. (The ribbon cutting event was January 23rd, 2023!)

WHAT DO YOU APPRECIATE ABOUT YOUR TEAM? Sarah Harne, our Marketing and Communications Director, is such a gift. She has the ability to see the good in people. She has a vision and always tries to showcase people in the best light. And that’s the way she approaches life, too! She always looks for the positives in the situation, even in the daily grind. She is a great influence on me. I get inspired when I see how she approaches her personal and professional life. I’m grateful for that. When you spend a lot of time with someone else, you want to be inspired. And, I think that makes her a remarkable leader. And Donna Kraft, our Executive Admin, is gifted in building relationships. People just love her; she makes them feel special, important and valued. Having that natural gift to make someone feel good immediately is an important part in building a relationship right off the bat. The members who have come to this organization during the two decades she has been here is reflective of her ability to build those relationships.

WHAT’S AN IMPORTANT PROJECT YOU’RE CURRENTLY WORKING ON?

We have been pursuing a really big project for about a year, which doesn’t seem very long. For fifteen years, the Frederick Rescue Mission has been trying to provide adequate drainage and pave their parking lot; and, what seems like something simple turns out to be quite complex. They needed support to help make this happen. For those who do not know, this organization is providing breakfast and lunch every day, shelter,

I love my family! I am so grateful to be a wife and a mother and be able to have an opportunity, now that my children are adults, to see that they are confident and good citizens. We enjoy watching them grow. Our goal, my husband and I, was to raise good people in this world. We enjoy travel and most vacations are where my youngest daughter, who is an Irish dancer, competes.
