Annette Johnson, founder and owner of Stadtkind Photography, is an award-winning photographer based in Frederick who is passionate about capturing sweet memories and bringing them to life. Hailing from Mainze, Germany, Annette moved to the United States in 2000, as an au pair, determined to find her path. Shortly after, she met her husband and her future was set. Two years later, they married in the U.S., and in 2005, they held their church wedding in Germany. That’s when her passion for photography really caught wind.

With a growing interest in the field, working with her wedding photographer sparked things into motion. Before she knew it, her hobby grew to a business, and she found the path she’d been looking for–and nobody does it like her. Annette specializes in family photography, ranging everywhere from newborn portraits, to maternity shots, to photos of the whole family–and they are pure magic. Making use of both ambient and created light, her pictures are a work of art–her child portraits bearing an especially fantastical and ethereal quality. Her beautiful downtown Frederick studio is complete with a stocked wardrobe containing one-of-a-kind, handmade couture dresses for girls and maternity outfits for expecting mothers. You know the saying: “Do what you love, love what you do.” It’s exciting, it’s inspiring, it’s the dream–but the road there is rarely straightforward. Still, the bumpy ride is worth the destination. For Lindsay Anderson, this is exactly what she’s gone after, and exactly where she’s landed. A Frederick native, Lindsay discovered her passion for art when she was given coloring books as a child. She knew it was the path to follow when it came time to pursue a college career–but it was no straight path. After giving graphic design a try, she realized it wasn’t for her and pivoted to art education. Shortly after attaining her Masters in K-12

Art Education, she landed a job teaching middle school art in Frederick. Fast forward to today, Lindsay teaches high school Art and Sculpture and is happier than ever. “I get to make art all day long with a bunch of people–you really can’t beat it. I feel like I have the best job in the world,” she shared. But as much as she loves teaching art, her path didn’t stop there. Over the years, Lindsay has become a fervent dog lover, so when two beloved pups belonging to her close friends passed away, she wanted a way to support them. She painted them beautiful pastel portraits as a gift and shared the paintings on her social accounts. But what was simply meant to serve as a meaningful gift to honor these late dogs became the kickstarter for her business. Everyone was asking for a their own portraits of the special dogs in their lives, and she knew she was onto something. Lindsay continues to create breathtaking pet portraits–of all types of animals, now in both acrylic and watercolor–though watercolor has her heart.

“...watercolor is just so much fun. Its organic; it’s free flowing…once you get the feel for it and you know what the watercolor is going to do on the paper, there’s no going back…” Lindsay shared. And not only is she good at it, but she does it with compassion, too. “I work really hard to communicate with the client about what type of photo to send in…on gathering other information–like what the dog’s personality was like. You know, just having a conversation about the animal so I can better capture it.” While that’s how her business started, Lindsay Elizabeth Art has evolved. Her motto? “I paint what I love, and I love to paint; and that’s really all there is to it.” And what she loves is all things natural, organic and bright. S.H.E. Week is back to engage, connect and inspire! Now in its fourth year and nationally recognized, this initiative is spearheaded by the Frederick County Chamber of Commerce’s Women in Business Committee and is anchored around Women’s Equality Day. Held August 22-26th, the program is designed to empower, develop and promote opportunities for all women throughout Frederick County. S.H.E. Week has seen exciting growth and momentum since its launch in 2019 to a sold out crowd. In 2021, the event series earned a national Award of Excellence from ACCE and in 2022, inspired a sister celebration in Fayetteville, North Carolina dubbed

SCHOLARSHIP Scholarship. Leadership. Talent. These are the three words displayed on the medallions worn by Emily Wang (Distinguished Young Woman of Southern Frederick County), Diya Jha (Distinguished Young Woman of Downtown Frederick), Shenali De Silva (Distinguished Young Woman of Northern Frederick County) and Daniella Bowie (Distinguished Young Woman of Urbana). Each of these ladies was awarded a $1,000 scholarship in the local Distinguished Young Women of Frederick County program in March and prepared to compete at the Maryland state level in July. Established in 1958, Distinguished Young Women (DYW) is a national scholarship program aiming to reward and inspire hard-working young women and prepare them for a successful future. For years, Frederick County has hosted a local program and given local high school juniors the opportunity to earn scholarship money, improve their interview skills, meet other incredible young women and grow their confidence as they step into life ahead. This year, nine outstanding young women from across the county gathered virtually to demonstrate their achievements on March 19, 2022. They excelled

in the interview, scholastic, public speaking, fitness and talent categories and were all awarded scholarships. The local program in Frederick is open for high school juniors each year, and it is free to participate. Not only are the participants given the experience of a live showcase to earn scholarships, they are also offered life skills training throughout the year to help them succeed. These include job-centered skills such as interview training, résumé development and social media etiquette, and life-centered skills including car maintenance, credit-building and tax advice. Rebecca Mitchell, the chairperson for the local program, stated, “We not only want to encourage the young ladies in the skills they’ve already honed and give them as much scholarship money as possible, we want to make sure they feel confident going forward. There’s so much ahead of them; we want them to succeed in everything they set their mind to!” Mitchell herself participated in the program in high school and, because of how much it impacted her, she has been volunteering with the Frederick program for the last ten years. If one of these four local representatives is awarded the honor of Distinguished Young Woman of Maryland, they will go on to participate in the national program in Mobile, Alabama. There, they will meet outstanding young women from all around the country! They will also have the chance to win cash and in-kind tuition scholarships, and the award of “Distinguished Young Woman of America.”
“DYW of Frederick County has truly helped me become more confident in the person that I am,” says Shenali. “I’m so excited to represent Northern Frederick and meet the other representatives at the state program.” Emily shares, “I am so incredibly grateful for this wonderful opportunity that I have been given and I have had such an enriching experience so far! I cannot wait for the state program where I will be able to meet and get to know the other amazing representatives!” These four ladies will spend the year encouraging people throughout the county to “Be Your Best Self,” a life-skills program developed by Distinguished Young Women. “I’m extremely humbled and grateful to represent Downtown Frederick and identify with the five pillars that Distinguished Young Women program stands for - being healthy, ambitious, involved, responsible, and studious,” says Diya. Daniella explained, “I’m excited to be a part of the DYW sisterhood and start this new journey! I hope to promote what this organization has to offer to other girls and inspire them to try new things that will further them personally and academically!” Any upcoming high school juniors interested in participating can apply online. It’s FREE to participate in the program, and all participants are automatically eligible for hundreds of college-awarded scholarships, including a half-tuition scholarship at Hood College in Frederick and full-tuition scholarships across the country. “I think that if you can help them with martial arts in their training, they hold themselves differently. They stand differently. They’re completely different than other people… it’s more about growth...[and] confidence...” During the July 4th holiday, a team of 20 from Brunswick, Maryland, arrived in Las Vegas for the 2022 AAU Taekwondo National Championships. Competing against well over 100 teams made up of about 3300 competitors from across the country, the Da Silva-Simmons Karate team walked away from the big city with 39 gold medals, 19 silver medals and 17 bronze medals in various sparring and forms events! They are also celebrating rising 7th grader, Madeleine Yepez, who was named to the AAU National Point Sparring Team! Meet Master Tim Simmons, as his students call him. Raised two blocks from his current studio located in Brunswick, his journey with Tang Soo Do began in the fall of 1979, when he saw a demonstration by Master William Wickham. His interest was sparked immediately, and he was set on a path that would keep him deeply invested in karate longer than he could have anticipated. About 10 years later, he achieved his First Degree Black Belt and would go on to earn a myriad of awards and accolades–including earning first place or the title of Grand Champion in over 200 tournaments, from 1988 to 2012. And he didn’t stop at competing as a martial artist himself. Over the years, he has taught and trained countless students at various studios, even going so far as to coach and train for Team USA in 2016, with six of those students earning World Championship medals that year. Truth be told, it was no simple road to get there. In fact, Tim ended up taking a long hiatus from karate–one that he intended to keep him out of the sport for good. Come the late 90s, Tim was more than ready for a change. By September of 2002, he’d opened Wing’n Pizza Shack in Brunswick and it was a total hit. He’d completely left the martial arts life behind and all ties to it, and didn’t plan on looking back. “...when I walked away, I was a young, burned-out martial arts instructor,” he reflected. “And a lot of it could’ve just been that I was young and immature…but like I said, I taught hundreds and hundreds of kids and had lots of success. I just was tired…since 1979, it was nonstop. My whole life was consumed by martial arts.”
Little did he know that his journey with the sport was far from over. His fiancé at the time had three young daughters. To his surprise, the youngest developed a persistent interest in karate, but she had no idea that he had any history with it–nor did anyone else who hadn’t known him while he was involved in the sport. Then one day, Tim’s sister finally gave him away, and she encouraged him to help the girls get started. His plan? To introduce the girls to Master Albano Da Silva—a long-time friend and world-renowned martial artist—and get them started at his studio. The result? Master Da Silva ended up reserving an entire floor of his studio for Tim to train the girls himself–and, soon after, many other students as well. Not much later, Tim found himself back in the martial arts swing, and his class had quickly outgrown the space. It was time for a new studio. Two buildings later, Da SilvaSimmons Karate can be found in a moderately-sized studio on Souder Road, and Tim is more invested than ever–and he plans to stick around. But what changed? What inspired him to recommit with such faithfulness after a lengthy break? He felt it was his turn to give back. “...I just wanted to teach again. I was back, mentally–I wanted teach. It was almost like unfinished business–just something that I needed to do.” And the way he does it is a lesson for us all. Yes, Tim and the Da Silva-Simmons students have incredible skill. Over the years, the competition team has competed successfully on every level, from national to international competitions. They are a force to reckon with. But even so, recognizing and celebrating their incredible success, it’s not just about the team for Tim. “...most team sports aren’t personalized…With martial arts, everybody’s a quarterback,” he explained. “So the motivation is when you’re training somebody, everybody in the world might think when they see you training that you don’t have it, or you’ve got a lot of work to do and…I see a kid that is 3 or 4 years old–can’t stand up, can’t walk forward, can’t pick their leg up– kick without falling, and I sit there and it’s almost like

you look into a crystal ball, and you think, what’s gonna happen if this kid takes this seriously? In 10 years, how are they going to turn out?” And that is the secret sauce to his training: compassion for his students. A commitment and desire to help them discover their full potential–in Tang Soo Do and in life. “I think that if you can help them with martial arts in their training, they hold themselves differently. They stand differently. They’re completely different than other people…” Tim continued. And while he loves to see students who are self-motived, eager to compete and determined to take the martial art form all the way, his hope and drive for each one runs deeper than their accomplishments. “The majority of the students here that train–they don’t compete…it’s more about growth– self growth, confidence–than it is competing. I mean, I’m extremely competitive and I always have been, but not all kids are…so there’s an avenue for competition for some of these kids if they want to, but nobody’s forced to,” he shared. But that by no means dilutes the pride he has in his competition team. In fact, it seems to be a big factor in their success. Of course, he trains this team to win. He’s elated when they come out on top. But in addition to their sheer talent, the connection he builds with them and his greater focus and commitment to their personal development is one of keys to their accomplishment–just as it is with the rest of his kids.
