If you’re like most people, when you think "root canal," you likely imagine a dreadfully painful procedure which you can hardly sit still through. That’s just what Dr. Brian D. Hall is on mission to change. A Frederick native, Dr. Hall earned his doctorate from the University of Maryland Dental School, where he also completed his residency with a specialty in endodontics. He then opened his own practice in 2002, and soon after received a call from Dr. Mayhew. “What are you doing with your patients?” he asked. Hall was understandably confused, but there was nothing wrong. In fact, it was quite the opposite. When his patients returned after having their root canals performed by Dr. Hall, they couldn’t stop raving about the experience. “... that question kind of steamed me. I said, okay, what am I doing? What is it that sets me apart?” he shared. After pondering the question, he realized that he was just being—well, himself.

Having always been a people person, Dr. Hall's natural knack for connecting with people was helping him ease patients through the stigmatized procedure. “It was the positivity that I was able to express towards the patient…” Hall explained. “...As soon as I walk in the room, I don’t talk about teeth. I just have a conversation…It breaks a little bit of a barrier and just makes them feel a little more comfortable by getting to know me–that I’m not this robot person who’s going to do this procedure. I’m actually just like them.” Continuing to lean into this strength to better calm his patients’ nerves, his business was thriving. But on May 2nd of 2009, things took a sudden and scary turn. A drunk driver lost control of his truck and drove into Dr. Hall's office. While it was quite a disaster, it turned out to be a catalyst that led Dr. Hall to his current location where he transformed his brand into what he's known for today. “Realistically, I never would've moved my office if it weren’t for that life debacle happening.” Dr. Hall shared. “The lemonade out of lemons that you make with that is just that; that awful time allowed me to move here and to create this motif, which has become such a brand for me.” And it truly has. Nowadays, if you hear someone mention “the rock ‘n’ roll dentist," they’re most definitely speaking of Dr. Hall. Though he comes from a family of professionals in various scientific fields, they are musically oriented as well. In fact, he, his brother and his father put together a garage band, and unexpectedly found themselves playing three to four months a summer for a few years. As he prepared to move into his new office, he realized that this love and passion for music might have a role in his business. Dr. Hall was determined to continue leaning into his strengths and passions to change his patients’ negative expectations. “...My thing is to take something that is so negative and throw it into a positive light, because positivity begets more positivity.” he said. While he knew he could help people relax by just interacting with them in the office, he wanted to change their mindset even before they even got to him. This is where the environment of his new office space would really shine. One day as he sat in a local chain restaurant, he found himself entranced as he scanned their walls decked with a variety of antique objects and decor. He had the same experience in the Hard Rock Cafe, and his idea was set in motion. “There’s that saying: music soothes the soul. And when you look at music, there are studies out there that show the positive physiology and benefits that music has…” he shared. And so, in his own unique way, Dr. Hall set out to create a similar atmosphere in his new space with

the goal of helping his patients forget the reluctance they felt about their trip to the endodontist. Today, Dr. Hall’s office has just the effect he had hoped it would. Decked with his personally-curated collection of music memorabilia, from a “recording” to autographed guitars, it does not look like your average dental practice. “I’ve had people walk in, take a step back out, and look at the name on the door to make sure that they’re in the right place.” Hall said. It certainly has a calming effect, and it works in perfect combination with his friendly, laid-back personality and incredible skill. A root canal is a big deal, but thanks to Dr. Hall, it doesn’t have to be scary–nor does it have to be painful. Should you ever find yourself in need of a root canal, you know where to go! I will say that my life as a father is made so much easier by my loving wife who cares for our children while I work long hours during the baseball season and brings them to baseball games so I can see them even while working. After winning Super Bowl LVI, Los Angeles Rams offensive tackle (#79) and Linganore High School graduate, Rob Havenstein, took time to share with us about growing up in Frederick County, being a father and playing NFL football.

WHAT WAS IT LIKE GROWING UP IN FREDERICK COUNTY? I loved my time in Frederick. It was pretty normal...The only thing not normal was the overall size of our family. I have a twin brother who is the same height as me (6’8”). My sister, who is two years older, is 6’2”. My mom is 6’1”. My dad is 6’6”. So, we always got a couple of looks when going different places as a family.

DID YOU GROW UP PLAYING SPORTS? We were always a big sports family. I didn’t start playing football until my 9th grade year. I played a lot of basketball...I also played baseball...and lacrosse. My parents were very supportive. I would say basketball was always my number one. We had a basketball hoop...and, me having a twin brother, you can imagine it got a little competitive at times.

WHY DID YOU TRANSITION TO FOOTBALL IN HIGH SCHOOL? My dad said when I get to high school if I want to play football, great. So, I gave it a shot and I wasn’t very good the first couple of years but I had a great coach and a lot of great people in my corner who helped me learn a lot...it seemed to work out.

WHAT ARE “LIFE LESSONS” YOU HAVE LEARNED FROM PLAYING FOOTBALL? I think there is a strong correlation between what you put into something and that directly relates to what you get out of it...If you really take the extra time, put in the extra work, put in the extra hours—then I think that shows...it doesn’t happen overnight, so it’s got to be consistent. And I feel it’s a strong mental power where you can get over some things...There is a lot of disappointment on all levels. It really teaches you the mental fortitude to just keep going and keep putting in the work…half of professional sports is truly your mindset.

DO YOU HAVE ANY PEOPLE IN YOUR LIFE WHO HAVE HELPED STRENGTHEN YOUR MINDSET? It all starts with who you surround yourself with, on a dayto-day basis. That’s why I’ve always felt lucky to have parents who believed in me and cared for me and didn’t sway or push me in any way. There was no bias toward anything. And, extending that to Rick Conner, my high school football coach; he was the same way. When I was getting recruited for college, I would ask him, “Where do you think I should go?” And, he would never give me an answer. The only thing he would do is support me as a person…in the end it was my decision. That’s something I really appreciate to this day.

WOULD YOU SHARE WITH US WHAT YOU EXPERIENCED WHEN YOU REALIZED YOU HAD WON SUPER BOWL LVI?

There are really so many. The one that sticks out for me...during my junior year, we went to the State Championship game and ended up not winning. In the aftermath, I was in my coach’s office and I said, “You know coach, you can’t win them all.” He stopped what he was doing and looked at me and he said very seriously, “Well, why not?!” And it clicked with me. You know, he was absolutely right. Why can’t you win them all? I’m not sure if he remembers saying that, but it always stuck with me. You play to win!

Throughout the whole game, [the score] was tight. We go down early in the second half. I think something very special about the team is that no one lost faith…if you were ever feeling doubt you could just look across the huddle into people’s eyes and realize it’s just a matter of time before we take the lead and before we win this game...This was the overall mindset of everyone out there. This is what we trained for...Then, you look up at the clock to see where you are and see what they have (they have one time out, but we have three kneeled downs, meaning the game is over). As I’m jogging out to the field and realizing that, “Hey, we are going to take three knees and the game’s over. We won the Super Bowl!”...it was such a rush of emotion...you did all the hard work…all the injuries…all the extra hours you put in…all that was for this moment...I was very quietly letting those emotions hit me. Once the clock hits zero and it’s over…you just start hugging everyone. We’re a really connected team and everybody has genuine love for each other. And I saw families coming onto the field, so I was looking for mine. Once they got onto the field, they were celebrating...[My wife] sees the in’s and out’s of everything...to have that super special someone on your side and on your team, really backing you up. I know I couldn’t do it without Meaghan.

AS WE CELEBRATE FATHER’S DAY, WHAT DOES BEING A DAD MEAN TO YOU? It means everything! Definitely one the best things that I have done. They are really two beautiful, awesome kids. It’s the little things of what they do that gives you that true understanding of the true meaning of what you wanted to do in life. And, for me, that was always a massive thing. I wanted to be a dad, and I wanted to be a good dad. We were just having dinner the other day and the kids are running around the kitchen island with the dog and we have music playing...It was crazy, but it was just one of those moments that you catch yourself smiling and thinking, “This is amazing!”

HOW DID IT FEEL WHEN YOU WERE HOLDING THE TROPHY? It was awesome! To actually see and hold it, it was everything coming together. It was truly amazing...Words can’t really describe the feeling...It represents the pinnacle of our sport, the pinnacle of our profession...It was truly amazing!

IF YOU COULD BOIL IT DOWN TO ONE THING, WHY DO YOU LOVE PLAYING FOOTBALL? I think one of the things you have to be is a true competitor. That’s got to be in your DNA...It’s understanding who you are as a person...That self-reflection of trying to make yourself a better man. That doesn’t have to be with just football. I think football helps a lot to have true self-reflection and be proud of what you did that day...some days you’re going to be good and some days you’re going to be disappointed. That’s what I mean about being a true competitor because when you have disappointing days, you ask, “Did I really get after it today?” “Was I really present?”...If you consistently look at yourself day in and day out, and truly like what you see and truly feel proud about what you see; I think that sends a good message to everyone.

WHAT DO YOU HOPE PEOPLE REMEMBER ABOUT YOU? There is a person behind the jersey. I’m a true person. I’m a father, I’m a husband, I’m a son...I hope people read this and think that I’m a genuine, good person. The football stuff is great and all, but it’s my job, it’s not who I am. I wouldn’t be here without the people that I had in my life, when I was growing up, teaching me how to be a good man. That’s the nuts and bolts of how I have succeeded.

The Frederick Keys Baseball Team is entering its second year in the MLB Draft League and couldn’t be more excited! In 2021, when minor league baseball was restructured from 160 to 120 teams, The Keys were invited by MLB to join five other formerly MLB-affiliated teams in the mid-Atlantic region to launch the inaugural season of the league, which creates teams with players who are primarily from the college ranks, but who must be draft-eligible to participate—hence the name “MLB Draft League.” Players are able to play in front of scouts and people from various MLB teams and have an additional showcase beyond their standard collegiate season. The league provides tougher competition and uses wooden bats (like in the MLB), instead of aluminum bats (which are used in college). Players get one last opportunity to show why they should be drafted and hopefully earn a higher draft position than when they first arrived. Last year there was a proof of concept, as seven players from the Frederick Keys were drafted, and another four players signed free agent deals following the draft (meaning a MLB team signed them to their minor league system). And, most notably, Alex Ulloa, an infielder who primarily plays shortstop for The Keys, was the highest drafted player in league history when he was drafted in the fourth round last year! Ulloa elected not to sign his contract

and will be back for the 2022 season with the Frederick Keys, along with five other returning players who are still considered draft prospects. “These guys were able to go back to college and play a year to increase their draft stocks and then return to us,” says General Manager, Andrew Klein. “Transitioning into this league was not so drastic,” Klein explains. “We are still affiliated with Major League Baseball and they are involved in helping to find the players who will be invited to the league every year based on who they want to see. The big difference is that we receive players just slightly before the draft, as opposed to, in the past, when we would get guys after they were drafted...Although we don’t have a single affiliation, we now have an affiliation with all thirty teams because all of our guys could potentially get drafted to any MLB team. That’s kind of cool that you can have a Frederick Key in any system now as opposed to only one... And, you get to see guys before they make it big, so to speak. Even if they may be a highly recruited player or prospect, you have more access. You have more ability to get to know a player and become a fan before the rest of the world knows them.” The one thing that hasn’t changed is the quality experience for the fans. one of the 40-game days, look for special promotional nights, give-aways, celebrity appearances, in-between inning games and prizes, and even try to catch a hot dog from Tito the Hot Dog Man (aka General Manager Andrew Klein, who has filled the roll—pun intended—since 2017, and says there is no way he will give it up). Come early and take the kids to the Fun Zone, which includes games and a carousel. Stay late to watch the fireworks show following Friday and Saturday night games. For many of us, family is a top priority. For Fratelli’s, family is its inspiration, focus and backbone—and every detail is executed with uncompromising excellence. Opened by Nick Sakellis and his brother in 1996, Fratelli’s Italian and Seafood began as a family endeavor. Together they sought out to share their tried-and-true family recipes with the world, which were quite the hit. A new generation joined the business as Nick and his son, George, opened a second location in Hampstead. Sharing their same delectable menu made up of family favorites, freshly-sourced seafood and handcrafted pasta, Fratelli’s success in the small town came quickly, and soon they were ready to expand yet again. Fratelli’s came to Middletown in 2018. Hathan Clark, the location’s owner/operator, is no less committed to the family focus and the excellent standard of the restaurant than the Sakellis family is, and it shows.

THE FOOD In addition to offering delicious recipes that have long been loved by and shared within the Sakellis family, Fratelli’s is committed to freshness. From nightly entree specials featuring various types of fish, to the melt-in-your-mouth tiramisu that Clark makes on the premises himself, to the pasta that’s made from scratch every single day, they’re serious about real, quality food. “You can actually see them make the pasta right here in the dining room on our pasta machine,” Clark shared. “Probably 90-95% of the menu is made from scratch, so all the sauces, the dough for the bread, salad dressings…everything we make from scratch.” And people can taste it. An example? Fratelli’s award-winning crab cakes. People rave about them—and for good reason. The Fratelli’s Middletown location has won best crab cakes in Frederick County for two years in a row. Another fan favorite? The incredible portion sizes. Expect heaping piles of fresh pasta, heftily-sized appetizers and bottomless bread and salad. For example, we recently ordered the meatball sliders, expecting small servings that could each fit in the palm of your hand. Not these bad boys. After working your way through this appetizer, you may have to tap out on the endless bread and salad—but for good reason. Trust us—this is not a place where they skimp out.

THE SERVICE We could go on about the food, but the excellent service is equally boast-worthy. With warm smiles, timely and intuitive service, and nimble hands, the front-of-house staff is professional yet still manage to make you feel at home. And while their innate skill and exceptional training take much of the credit, it also speaks to the care they receive as Fratelli’s staff. The family focus of this restaurant goes beyond the makeup of its leadership. It’s infused into everything they do, including how they view and care for each staff member. highly valued, and as awful as COVID-19 has been, it only further highlighted the company’s familial commitment to their team. I had the opportunity to ask Clark what their biggest challenge has been throughout the pandemic. He shared that for them—like many businesses—it was the uncertainty about the future; but, that uncertainty wasn’t stronger than Clark’s commitment to his people. Here’s some of what he shared: “We have some great employees who work here…and we wanted to make sure that they were taken care of through the whole thing...The week we closed, we brought them all in. We did extra cleaning projects around the restaurant…it’s not something we necessarily needed. We were just trying to get them some work to do to keep them busy,” he shared. When I asked him a little more about the motivation for this decision, this was his response: “We’re blessed to have people who want to work hard, want to do a good job and adhere to the standards; so when you get people like that—who are hard workers, and who do things the right way and are loyal—then you’ve got to be loyal to them, too.”

Clark credits the members’ of these groups voluntary promotion of Fratelli’s with having a major role in their endurance through the pandemic. “...we really took off on those platforms at the time…it just makes us really thankful for the support we’ve received from the community in Middletown and Frederick. I think we, along with a lot of other small businesses, wouldn’t be here if people didn’t take the time to really support us and help out.” Clark shared.
