Betty White reminds us that “Women are like butterflies. They may look pretty and delicate but baby, they can fly through a hurricane.” Did that quote immediately bring to mind some of the strong women in your life? It did for me. Where would we be without them? Literally not here—that’s for sure. With Mother’s Day around the corner, this is a good time to be thinking of ways to honor and celebrate the important women in our lives. And while motherhood is a beautiful thing to acknowledge, let’s not forget the many other influential women shaping our lives as well. Grandmothers, aunts, godmothers, sisters, mentors, teachers, friends and other matriarchs are certainly deserving of our admiration. Even a simple “I appreciate you” or “You’ve made a big impact on me” can go a long way! This month in our Women’s Edition, we hope to delight and inspire you. When it comes to our overall health and well-being, one of the most overlooked areas is oral health. Did you know that many diseases first appear in the mouth? Regular dental visits can not only help to prevent cavities but also inform you of things that might be happening in another part of your body. It is important to find a dentist who is thorough and provides a high quality of care. Here are a few questions to consider when choosing a dentist:

1. DOES THE DENTAL PRACTICE HAVE A HIGH QUALITY OF CARE? Quality of care is the degree to which the dentist or dental hygienist will go to ensure they support you in your journey to have a healthy mouth. Oral cancer screenings, measuring bone levels around your teeth and listening to your oral health goals are just a few signs that demonstrate the dental practice is striving to provide quality care.

“It was just the entrepreneurialism of this old couple who wanted their whole lives to do something for themselves… and opened a really successful and community-oriented bakery–and I just loved it.”

It all started for Nikkie while working at a local family-owned bakery in Urbana at age 14, but it wasn’t the baking itself that set her on the path to Sage Cakery. “It was just the entrepreneurialism of this old couple who wanted their whole lives to do something for themselves…and opened a really successful and community-oriented bakery–and I just loved it.” Nikkie recalled. After taking cake decorating classes at Michaels with her mother and sister, she fell in love with it as a new creative outlet. Before she knew it, her newfound love had blossomed into a side hustle—but she wasn’t prepared for its success. In fact, her cakes grew to be in such high demand that she became overloaded with orders. Feeling the burnout, she took a hiatus from cake decorating altogether. With a growing interest in herbalism, she changed directions and went to Green Comfort School of Herbal Medicine. Despite discovering a new passion in herbalism, her fondness for baking cakes was overpowering, and it was time to make a choice. She would either have to leave baking and decorating cakes behind, or make it the main thing. A piece of wisdom she’d carried along the way guided her decision. “I really decided that the thing that I was looking for was not a ‘thing’. It’s not what you’re doing, but how you’re doing it,” she shared.
