Protect yourself against colorectal cancer. Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the U.S. While colorectal cancer can sometimes be hard to detect, your best defense is routine screenings starting at age 45 or sooner if you have a family history of the disease.

I love a good home project. There is something invigorating about freshening up a room with new paint, bringing in a splash of color with throw pillows, or updating a room with a total transformation. I am a DIY’er by nature and always have something in the works. Last year we added board and batten to several walls in our home and they have sparked joy ever since. And by we, I mean I had the idea and my gracious hubby brought it to life. Thanks babe! March is our Home edition and we’ve curated a variety of stories to delight and inspire you. Peek inside a beautifully designed “Dream House” in Frederick County and meet the woman who puts the “Heart” in HeartFields Assisted Living. Take a seat with the incredible couple bringing the Showbread Table to life and get to know the fierce and friendly femaleowner of a fast growing roofing company. We know that creating a home that you want to spend all of your time in isn’t easy. So whether you’re ready to bring in the pros, take a stab at a daring DIY project or continue to embrace that “hip” wallpaper from the 80s, memories that are made within the walls of our home are what matters most. Let’s remember to love well, be present and cherish the small things. Maybe it’s time to start putting the phone down and pushing the to-do list aside so that precious moments don’t slip by us. From our home to yours, we wish you love, peace and beautiful memories.

HEARTFIELDS AT FREDERICK HAS ITS RESIDENTS LIVING THEIR BEST LIFE, AND THEN SOME

Home

What comes to mind when you think of assisted living? Isolation? Monotonous? Depressing? Not at HeartFields. Not if Anita Evans has anything to say about it. Executive Director of HeartFields Assisted Living at Frederick, Anita Evans was made for this. Hailing from Finland in the small, village-like town of Kurikka, she enjoyed a close relationship with her grandparents; so close that when the time came to move them into a nursing home, she pursued (and landed) a job in the very same one to ensure they were getting the quality care they deserved. “They need help. They raised us and now it’s our turn to help out,” she asserted. This passion to honor her elders launched Anita into a now decades-long career in senior care where she’s using her skills to impact the lives of the aging in a beautiful way, right here in Frederick. Having moved to the U.S. as a nanny for the Finnish Ambassador, Anita had plans to return to Finland for nursing school; but things changed after meeting her husband here in the States. Soon after, she was married and living in Rockville with a budding family. After raising four sons, she earned her nursing degree at Frederick Community College. Then came HeartFields. Anita started at HeartFields as a floor nurse in 2000, and after being promoted once, she was again promoted to Executive Director in 2008. Now serving in her 22nd year there, it seems Anita has found her match with HeartFields at Frederick. With the mission to “honor and enrich the journey of life,” the staff at HeartFields does just that. The residents at this incredible place are not just surviving the aging process. They didn’t suffer a life downgrade due to medical requirements or the need for daily assistance. They are thriving and carrying on their lives; but now, with closer friends, no chores, beautiful amenities and constant access to the help they need. Instead of burying their passions in the past, residents continue doing what they love, on their own and with personalized programs crafted just for them. A social life? Opportunities to build and nurture friendships abound through the many social and recreational events offered. And to boot, the food is top notch and happy hour is happenin’. But that’s not all that make HeartFields special. “Frederick is earthy, homey, with a lot of history…I think HeartFields is just like that,” Anita shares. “We’re small, we know all our people. We know their families, we know their pets, we know that they like and what they don’t like. We create individual plans for them, we have fun. We’re more like family than a large business. Our staff is very passionate and friendly and real…we do healthcare; we do it well, but we do it in a family way.” At HeartFields, they don’t just take care of their residents; they love them and they invest in them with joy. That’s what makes HeartFields so special. Anita Evans and HeartFields are making sure the elderly of Frederick are living their best lives, and then some. HeartFieldsAtFrederickAssistedLiving.com

LOCA L’S CH OICE | HOM E S E RVI CE S

introducing sandra hofmeister The Unconventional Owner of A&S Construction

Sandra Hofmeister moved from Florida to Frederick in 2010, to be with her husband, and immediately embraced the farms, parks, Downtown and, most of all, the people. How did she go from being a CPA to one of two finalists in The Frederick News-Post’s 2021 Best of the Best contest for Best Roofing Company? We asked this unconventional, determined entrepreneur and she shared her inspirational story with passion, humor and warmth.

HOW DID YOU GET FROM MOVING TO FREDERICK IN 2010 TO STARTING A&S CONSTRUCTION IN 2021? I discovered at a young age that life is a journey and takes you to unexpected places. My father was a WWII Veteran. He was expelled from his country by the dictator, became a diplomat, met my mom and the rest is history. We spent time in different countries until my parents settled down in Peru. When I arrived in Frederick, I didn’t want a long commute to a job. Instead, I stayed local to work for a roofing company...I was new to the industry and had no idea about measurements like square foot and yard, because my world was the metric system. It was hard to learn...but I was determined and spent my nights studying...Eventually I was promoted to production manager...As the only hispanic woman working at the company, I was overseeing everything…until a layoff due to Covid-19.

is what I know best. I’m taking my time to grow. I’m a perfectionist. Everything has to be just right.

WHAT ARE SOME QUALITIES ABOUT YOU THAT SET YOU APART IN YOUR INDUSTRY? I am a woman-owned company based in Frederick! I am a part of the community. If you need me, I can take care of you ASAP because you are a priority—you’re like family. When you call, I am the one who meets with you...I don’t send a sales person...I go myself with my technician...And, during the install, 99% of the time I am there. As the owner, I want you to feel special. I think people appreciate this special attention...I love and enjoy this very much...I want my customers to know I will take care of them. I’m always there to serve them.

WHEN YOU STARTED YOUR BUSINESS, WHAT RESOURCES IN FREDERICK DID YOU TAP INTO? A local business owner told me about the Frederick County Chamber of Commerce. I joined…talked with a mentor…attended classes…participated in networking… watched a ton of videos for marketing, sales, bookkeeping; Every. Single. Thing. I. Needed. I have met a lot of wonderful people through the Chamber who really care and have been instrumental to help me grow my business.

WHAT DOES A&S STAND FOR?

WHAT WOULD YOU TELL YOUNG WOMEN?

My husband’s name is Andrew and my sister’s name is Angela. (Angela lives in Peru, but we are very close.) These are the two people who I care about the most. And, “S” is for Sandra. So, it’s A&S. The reason I chose “Construction” and not “Roofing” is because I plan to grow. I want to expand to siding, windows, decks, etc. Right now I’m focused on roofing because that

I want the young girls to know that there is a lot of opportunity in the trades. Do not be afraid to enter the trades… There is great money to earn…It’s going to be more challenging because you have to fight harder. But, here I am. I survived!…I consider myself an unconventional woman. I don’t follow the path that everyone else does…At this time, everything is possible. You can do it all! This is what happens when you pair a custom home builder and an interior designer…magic! This kind of magic doesn’t happen like we see in movies or on HGTV—with the flick of a wand or a beginning and ending in under an hour. This magic has depth and history that carry it from conception to completion. It’s a story that goes back several decades when land was first purchased with the hopes to build a “Dream Home.” Years of waiting, permitting and a couple of architectural plans later, Mike and Burgess Pilch broke ground and started building their forever home. Mike is a Managing Partner at North Market Construction, a local custom home build company with a mission to build better and smarter. When the Pilch’s brought me onto their project to help with the design, it was long before the drywall. They had already picked a few finishes, like the random width red and white oak flooring from Vintage Lumber and the kitchen cabinets. “What is coming with you from your old home that we need to incorporate into the design?,” I asked. “Nothing, just a black piano gifted by my [late] father,” said Burgess. A blank canvas is exciting and sometimes daunting for a home-owner. It takes one piece to set things into motion and the piano was it! I knew I had to carry the sentimental value of that piece into every room. While interior design involves thoughtful selections implemented to perfection, it first requires a trusting relationship and understanding of what the client wants—that is when the magic happens. That is when you create something better than what they could have imagined! DreamHouseStyle.com

INTERIOR DESIGN TIPS FOR YOUR HOME WORDS OF WISDOM FROM THE DREAM HOUSE TEAM ARTICLE BY MARY BEUTLER PHOTOGRAPHY BY KRISTEN WOJDAN

32

D E C OR T R E N D S | HOM E + DE S I GN

Dream House Interior Designers Andie Dennis, Wendy Flynn, Cassandra Senn Vaira and Mary Beutler share their most valuable interior design tips:

INVEST IN YOUR “EVERY DAY” PIECES. You don’t want to skimp on the important pieces. Investing in seating, especially in the family room, is going to save you in the long run. There are other areas where you can save, like lamps, side tables or accessories. You won’t regret a sofa that lasts for decades; you will regret having to replace your focal-point sofa after a few years.

CHOOSE CLEANABLE FABRICS FOR ALL UPHOLSTERED FURNITURE. Sunbrella, Crypton and Inside Out are a few of the cleanable fabric resources out there. They’re not only cleanable but they are durable, kid/pet friendly and some are fade resistant. When investing in upholstery, we always recommend pairing your lasting furniture with lasting fabrics.

COMPLETE INTERIOR DESIGN SERVICES PICK A KEY PIECE TO DESIGN EVERYTHING ELSE AROUND. You’ve got to start somewhere. When starting from scratch find a rug, a piece of art, etc. (in this case, a piano) to start the design around. You will be able to bounce any ideas or pieces off that starting point to make sure it aligns with the design direction.

COVID-19 has disrupted many of our lives. Canceled plans, isolation, the loss of loved ones, altered daily life—we’re in a time in which the opportunity for depression and anxiety abound, and with these, the resurfacing of deeper wounds that we’ve left unattended. If ever there was a time to seek healing for past and present hurt, it’s now. That’s just what The Showbread Table is for. When Sam and Ana Nunez met, they quickly discovered that they were both equally discontented with secular living and both eager but unsure of how to dive into the Christian life. So, they linked arms and dove in together. After 14 years of marriage, they were well into their new lives as Christians but grieved by the remaining brokenness that they believed should’ve been banished on the day they’d said “I do.” “When you get married, sometimes there’s this fallacy…that when you say ‘I do,’ everything you’ve done up to that point just kind of ends and…you don’t carry that into your marriage,” Sam shared. And once they realized this was indeed untrue, they began to seek the inner healing they still needed. Not long after came the desire to help others do the same. “Our brokenness is really what the Showbread Table was birthed out of. We began to have a deep passion to see others get set free,” Ana explained.

This is what they’re all about. A non-profit organization new to Frederick, The Showbread Table is a place where people can come to seek inner healing and restoration from their abiding wounds—for free. Anyone is welcome to the Table, whether Christian or agnostic, single or married. They offer different experiences called “Tables” to best match your situation, during which you enjoy good food (or drink), good company and share your story. Yep. That’s all you have to do: share your story. Ana and Sam are not clinical counselors, but with a genuine love for people, they believe in the power of connection through the sharing of our stories and the power of God’s presence. This is what they rely on to help people towards healing. “The Showbread Table is the formal launch of the ministry that God put inside of Ana and myself. We’ve been doing ministry like this for a long time,” Sam shared. “We just want to be a resource… to anyone who’s looking for a safe and intimate setting in order to experience the presence of God.” So, looking for a place where you’re invited to be heard and experience healing? There is an open invitation at The Showbread Table. TheShowbreadTable.com
