It’s a new year, and that signifies new beginnings and a fresh start. With how busy life can be, it is a nice reprieve to be still for a moment and reflect on where we have been, what the past year has taught us and where we want to go from here. The practice of establishing new goals for the coming year is a tool that can provide focus for our true priorities. Some of the most popular New Year’s resolutions center around eating healthier, getting fit, organizing clutter and spending quality time with the people we cherish most. Other goals are more community focused and revolve around finding ways to help and support others. Know that the simple act of setting goals is the first step to making them a reality. Then it’s all about choosing to move from simply thinking about doing those things to making a daily decision to act on them. You can do this! Our January edition is dedicated to health & wellness and what’s new and exciting as we move into the New Year. We’ve got some great reads on local health gurus who are leading patients to lasting wellness and fitness opportunities that may be just what you’re looking for! You, our faithful reader, may also recognize some new branding and style changes in the magazine that we are really excited about. Did you notice the new logo on the cover? We are always looking to bring you fun, relevant, engaging content that connects you to our beloved Frederick. Thank you for being on this journey with us. We look forward to all that’s ahead in the New Year. Here’s to a healthy and happy 2022!

Jan Grover got a whole lot more than she bargained for when she transitioned to self-employment five years ago. For years, Jan worked as an outside sales representative for health and wellness companies. But in 2016, when her employer decided to downsize, she was faced with a choice: should she pursue other work as a sales rep, or step into an entirely different opportunity? She chose the latter, which, as it turns out, is very fortunate for us. Today Jan is the owner of Club Pilates in Frederick and Germantown, and she is helping to transform lives every day. Jan holds an MBA in business and a 500 Hour Comprehensive Pilates Certification, A Barre Above Certification with Pilates Focus, and Myofascial Release Certification. If you get to know Jan, you’ll find that she invested in much more than just the business side of things. She invested in her own physical training, and she invested in community. Pilates wasn’t new to Jan, who had come to experience the low-impact activity in the past because of her daughter, who is a dancer. Pilates had been a natural way for the two of them to connect.

Pilates is a system of low-impact exercises that focuses on the core of the body. This includes the abdomen, back, thighs, glutes and pelvic floor. Pilates develops core strength, flexibility, coordination and improved posture. It emphasizes balance and creates long, lean muscle throughout the entire body. (And who wouldn’t want that?) But the experience isn’t a solo one. Joining Club Pilates means joining a community. “Community. That’s actually the thing I’m most proud of,” smiles Jan. “You might not have walked in with friends, but you’ll leave with friends.” There’s a group who goes out to dinner after their Tuesday night classes. There are people who have found a “second family.” Although the focus of Pilates is a physical one, the emotional connection is inevitable. People from different walks of life come into the studio and can choose a suitable style of instruction, one that fits their CONTINUED > specific needs. JANUARY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . “When members come into our studio, they know that those 50 minutes are just for them,” says Jan. Each class brings “a sense of grounding and control that is unlike any other fitness class. You leave feeling calmer, stronger, taller and more balanced,” says Amber, a Club Pilates member. “And you typically don’t realize how hard you’re working because you’re having such a great time!” Amber goes on to explain how amazed she is by the thousands of different moves that can be done among all the different pieces of equipment. The experience is mentally stimulating “because you never know what you’re going to be doing next!” she exclaims. Yet, the instructors are so skilled in teaching new moves that classes are not overwhelming or intimidating. Every technique can be modified for all kinds of fitness levels and injuries. When it comes to classes, you’ll never take the same one twice! While some classes focus on flexibility or core strength, for instance, others focus on cardio. Some members say that the energy of the Cardio Sculpt class feels like a club on a Saturday night!

Here to make your dreams of homeownership in Frederick come true!

Let’s connect.

Every quarter at Club Pilates, Jan tries to offer three different things—something social, a game and something educational. Every quarter, Club Pilates holds a member appreciation event of some type, which is often free, plus a workshop. Club Pilates is all about its members finding their rhythms and doing what is needed for their bodies. There are truly countless modifications for the different exercises so that everyBODY can participate. A longtime member, Sharon, shares her experience: “I cannot say enough about all the health benefits I have gained, the second family I have become involved with, along with the overall pleasure of the Pilates experience. Every instructor is amazing and knows how to help every individual, the classes are geared towards every skill level and as you get stronger and more confident, you go to the next level.” People leave feeling taller than before. More confident than before. Amber declares, “I’m giving my body a gift by going to this class.” ClubPilates.com/SouthFrederick

Dr. Lo Uses Nutrition Response Testing® to Get to the Source of Health Issues

20

EXP E RT H E LP | LOCAL SERVI CE S

Dr. Lo

After hearing from multiple doctors that his pancreatic cancer would soon end his life, a Washington DC resident sold everything, including his home. The cancer had spread to his bladder, liver and lungs. He lost function in one leg and had to use a wheelchair. Without a doubt, his time was ending. Or so he thought. By happenstance, this gentleman’s new landlord found out about his severe condition and referred him immediately to Dr. Thomas Lo in Frederick. After a thorough nutritional evaluation, Dr. Lo found the cause of his problem and recommended some supplements and a dietary program to help his body heal. After eight weeks, the patient was able to walk on his own. And within eight months, he was put on a maintenance program to keep his body healthy. Remarkable, indeed. Yet this is not a unique story for this doctor and his practice. This is merely one example of the many who have found healing through the nutritional program, even when the odds were stacked against them. With over 35 years of solo practice, Dr. Lo holds numerous certifications including low-level cold laser therapy, advanced activator method chiropractic technique and clinical nutrition. His prowess in the health field earned him the opportunity to become attending chiropractor for the World’s Greatest Athlete Decathlon Club in the 2004 Olympic Trial and attending chiropractor for the Ballet Theater of Maryland. In his experience with the Olympic decathlon team, he tells us, he learned two important things: speed and cold laser treatment. His decathlon athletes had to be treated in five minutes or less so that they could quickly get back on course. “It was the difference between gold and silver,” he reflects. To this day, each patient of his is treated like an Olympic athlete. Dr. Lo wants the very best for them. Although some

patients are eager for a quick fix, Dr. Lo uses his expertise to discover the root of their health issues. Dr. Lo uses an all-around approach, and believes that screening a patient first is always best because a health problem is not always what it seems. He explains that sometimes people think a joint issue requires a chiropractic answer, when really, at its core, the issue is nutrition-related. Dr. Lo handles both chiropractic and nutrition patients. His treatments include Nutrition Response Testing® (NRT®), Chiropractic, Cold Laser Therapy and Heavy Metal and Chemical Detoxification. Each of these play their important roles in his treatment programs. In fact, Dr. Lo is currently one of only a few health practitioners in the United States who have attained an Advanced Clinical Training Graduate status in the field of NRT®. NRT® is a non-invasive study done on a body. It analyzes the body’s reflexes, and in doing so, provides a system of monitoring the body. NRT® uses different reflexes on the surface of the body that relate to the individual’s state of health and the function of each organ. Dr. Lo uses the analogy of four legs of a table to explain the function and importance of muscles, bones, nerves and nutrition in our bodies. “Take one leg away and the table won’t stand right,” he points out. If nothing else, a look at Dr. Lo’s lifestyle provides an excellent example of practicing what you preach. At 70 years old, he is active and healthy. He plays pickleball at a competitive level, hitting the court five to six days a week, for a few hours each day! Beyond that, his daily regimen includes good chiro care, nutrition, exercise and stretching. CONTINUED >

“A look at Dr. Lo’s lifestyle provides an excellent example of practicing what you preach. At 70 years old, he is active and healthy. He plays pickleball at a competitive level, hitting the court five to six days a week, for a few hours each day.” “I can outplay younger players because they can’t play more than two days in a row. I can outrun them on the court,” he chuckles. Dr. Lo’s agility and strength comes from sticking to his regimen. And he shares his wisdom with the younger pickleball players. “It’s not a secret!” he adds emphatically. Recently, Dr. Lo competed in the Maryland State Senior Olympics in the 70-74 age group. Out of 14 teams, his team took home the bronze. He also competed in the second annual charity pickleball tournament for The Alzheimer’s Association. In the 45 and older group, his team won bronze out of eight teams.

Dr. Lo brings both professional and personal experience to his practice, which is a huge reason for his success. He seeks to understand each person and his or her individual needs. He is able to address the most difficult cases by finding causes that were previously hidden or mysterious. Take it from the story of a 17-year-old powerlifter who was so severely injured that many told him he would never lift again. After Dr. Lo’s careful chiropractic work, he is now back to lifting—and not only that, he is even setting records. DoctorLo.Com

L E A R N M O R E : Dr. Lo and his practice strive “to help change the health care paradigm and establish a new era of health care in the Community, resulting in greatly improved health―individually, and for all future generations” (DoctorLo.com).

Dr. B Shanes, family practitioner at Frederick Health, states that we unfortunately live in what can be referred to as a “sick-care” system. In a sick-care system, the general population visits the doctor after already experiencing symptoms. Sore throat? Visit the doctor. Chronic headache? Visit the doctor. Sounds about right, doesn’t it? However, medical experts agree that a more preventive approach to health care directly correlates to a healthier population. Preventive care should not be neglected. You see, if we keep up, we can prevent sickness from occurring. Health care should be proactive, not reactive. It’s not difficult to see why routine care can prevent a myriad of issues. At Frederick Health, medical professionals help patients keep up with important screenings based on their history, age and sex. But it’s not just preventive care that is necessary. Dr. Shanes expounds on this by sharing a staggering statistic: “Changing behaviors—moving away from a poor diet, sedentary behavior and smoking―can eliminate 80% of heart disease.” Read that again. For many, becoming and staying healthy requires a lifestyle change, plain and simple. Exercising regularly is recommended, of course, and it takes a minimum of 30 minutes most days of the week to not be considered sedentary. “Some people might not even realize we do health care education and preventive care measures,” states Dr. Shanes, whose practice focuses mainly on nutrition and health. He adds, “... and probably one of the most important things is to have a physician who gets to know your personal history over time.” And by that, he means there is value in a primary care physician who knows you and your history well. It is more crucial than we may think! For doctors to know where you’ve been is just as important as knowing where you are currently in your health journey. Additionally, people who keep the same primary care doctor actually have lower health care costs in general. Dr. Shanes mentions that Frederick Health professionals help their patients make treatment decisions, provide referrals to specialists and offer chronic disease management. One of the perks of Frederick Health’s system is convenience. For example, in just one building in Urbana, a patient can receive primary care, urgent care, labs, x-rays or even physical therapy without having to drive to another location. For families with children especially, this is a game-changer. Speaking of increased accessibility and ease, the construction of the new Emmitsburg facility is a major plus. Tom Kleinhanzl, President & CEO of Frederick Health states, “Bringing care to residents of the northern part of Frederick County is extremely important. As our county continues to grow, we must ensure that all Frederick County residents can receive quality medical treatment.” Mount St. Mary’s University has partnered with Frederick Health since 2018. This has allowed for health and wellness services for students and student-athletes. IF THERE IS ONE THING MY FAMILY AND I LOVE THROUGHOUT THE SEASONS, IT’S A BOWL OF GRANOLA. PHOTOGRAPHY LAUREN CHRISTOPHERSON PHOTOGRAPHY

ARTICLE KAREN MITCHELL / FORTITUDE AND FINN

30

SPICED GRANOLA RECIPE WARM SPICED GRANOLA Paired with icy cold yogurt, fruit and honey during the summer or over baked apples drizzled with maple syrup in the cold months, or even straight out of the jar as a healthy snack, it’s a must have.

INGREDIENTS + 4 C. of Rolled Oats

+ 1 C. Sour Cherries

+ 1 C. of unsweetened

+ 1/2 C. Avocado Oil

Toasted Coconut Strips

+ 1/2 C. Maple Syrup

+ 1/2 C. Honey Roasted

+ 2 Tsp. Ground Cinnamon

Sliced Almonds (optional)

+ 2 Tsp. Pumpkin Spice

+ 1/2 C. Pumpkin Seeds

+ 1/2 Tsp. Salt

DIRECTIONS 01 Preheat oven to 250 degrees 02 Crumble coconut strips with a tight squeeze before adding. 03 Gently stir all ingredients together in a large bowl thoroughly. 04 Line a large baking sheet with parchment or slip pad. 05 Evenly spread granola across pan 06 Bake for 30-45 minutes, keeping an eye on when the granola looks lightly browned. 07 Remove from oven and let cool. 08 Store in a large glass jar TIP The trick to having large chunks of granola is to let it fully cool after removing it from the oven and then gently scraping a large wooden spoon through it. This will allow for big pieces to be kept as well as smaller crumbles along the way.
