Thank You For Your Service According to the USO, Veterans Day is a federal holiday that falls on November 11th and is designated as a day to honor the more than 19 million men and women who have served in the U.S. military. While it is important to thank all those who have served or are serving on a regular basis, on Veterans Day it’s especially important to take an extra moment to show military members gratitude for their sacrifice. Kristen Wojdan, Founder & Editor of Frederick Lifestyle, thought of a beautiful and impactful way to do just that… dedicate our entire November “Thankful” Edition to veterans! In the pages ahead, you will meet some local heroes continuing to serve and support those around them in all different types of meaningful roles. From business owners and leaders to veteran support services and dynamic healthcare providers, the “Thank You for Your Service” edition shines a light on men and women in our beloved community who are pouring out that same courage and compassion for the betterment of others. They are an inspiration to us all and only a small fraction of the many veterans who call Frederick County home. As Veterans Day approaches, I encourage you to consider doing something you have never done before to show your appreciation. Attending a Veterans Day event, asking a veteran about their time in the service or donating to a military support nonprofit are just a couple ideas to get your wheels turning. So few of us will ever come close to fully comprehending the sacrifices made by our veterans. How fortunate are we to experience the freedoms we have every day without having to put our lives on the line? For those who are serving now, for those around us who have served and for those who have served and are no longer with us, we salute you and your families. We honor you. We respect you. We are filled with gratitude. Thank you for your service and sacrifice. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday season, Frederick. As always, thanks for reading and we’ll see you around town!

Continuity of Service VETERAN HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS AT FREDERICK HEALTH CONTINUE TO SERVE WITH HONOR, COURAGE AND COMMITMENT

It was an honor to spend some time with a few of the many healthcare providers who have served in the U.S. military before serving our community at Frederick Health. Their experience and background have empowered and equipped them to provide excellent care to our neighbors and friends every day.

MARGARET (PEGGY) MCNEIL

Military Service: Air Force, Colonel, 28 years of service, Critical Care Nurse Current Role: Director of Nursing Quality Working as a young hospital nurse in New York, Peggy McNeil decided to join the Air Force and began to see the world. Her first duty assignment was in California. She was also deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. “To be able to care for the 18 and 19 year-olds who went out on patrol and came back injured was a privilege,” Peggy said. “They chose to serve, the least I could do was care for them. Serving those who serve was my mission.” As a colonel, Peggy taught trauma care skills. “Caring and working under adversity is a very transferable skill, she explained. “My war zone trauma experience transferred well to the intensive care unit and to caring during the pandemic.” The military is diligent about continued leadership training. Peggy considers that one of the most transferable skills to her current role as a leader in the Frederick Health nursing team. “Leading people here is much like leading people in Iraq and Afghanistan...Both military service and nursing are more than jobs. They are callings with different motivation for the population you serve...The most important part of my job now is being sure that all nursing personnel have the best skills possible to maximize the care provided to patients. What I like most about my job is the fabulous people I work with—they all care.”

Military Service: Navy Nurse Corp, Lieutenant, 4 years of service, Intensive Care Nurse Current Role: Registered Nurse While Kerry Phillips was in the midst of taking her final nursing school exam, the September 11th terrorist attacks took place. Four years after beginning to serve her local community, Kerry joined the Navy Nurse Corp at 26. Her first assignment was caring for patients in the Traumatic Brain Injury unit at Bethesda Naval Hospital. With that experience and knowledge, she was then deployed twice to Kuwait as an intensive care nurse. Kerry attributes her excellent bedside manner to her military experience. “Experiencing the trauma and hardship of the military patients and their loved ones gave me a greater understanding of how my role as a nurse can ease their woes.” In her role as civilian nurse, Kerry loves the fact that she is caring for her neighbors and taking care of the families in her community. “Service members are from all over. Military Service: Army, Sergeant, 3 years of service, Transport Management Coordinator Current Role: Registered Nurse Crystal joined the Army for the opportunities it provided to a girl from the Eastern Shore. She was working as a Certified Nursing Assistant in a nursing home considering a healthcare career in the service. However, the “needs of the Army” didn’t align with her wishes at the time. Instead, she was assigned to logistics. As with Kerry, the September 11th attacks influenced her military choices and career—she was in Basic Training at the time. “Logistics is highly deployable,” she said. “When I signed on, I didn’t realize I’d see the sand.” In time of conflict, Crystal acknowledged again, the needs of the Army come first. She was assigned to the Kuwait Naval Base, then back home, then back to another conflict zone at an air base in Iraq with an involuntary extension of her service. After leaving the Army, Crystal earned an A.A. in human services and went on to nursing school. “Serving others makes me feel good and fulfilled. I like making a difference in people’s lives as they go through a difficult time. I try to ease their lives and make a difference with humor.” Crystal began her time at Frederick Health in the Cardiac Care unit. For the last two years, she has provided care with the surgical team. She works in both pre-op and in the post-anesthetic unit, sometimes in both places the same day and occasionally caring for the same patient before and after their surgery.

Military Service: Navy, Lieutenant Commander, 20 years of service, Chaplain Current Role: Veteran’s Liaison - Hospice Although trained as a Registered Nurse, Bob LeBron now serves the community as the Hospice Veteran’s Liaison. His career has spanned ten years working in a Veteran’s Administration hospital to bedside then surgery care. Eventually, he chose to serve as a Navy chaplain. After retirement, he did pastoral work in Wisconsin, but returned to Maryland to be closer to family. “Honor, courage and commitment are part of serving in the Navy and that translates very well to my current job,” LeBron says. “It’s a sacred honor to listen to a patient’s military story about their service. It’s my commitment to ensure they are recognized and honored for their commitment to serve our country.” The courage he sees during the last years, months or days of a Veteran’s life is an example of the courage they showed in their service. Hospice can be provided to a patient and family for a longer time than the public conceives, sometimes for several years. “Hospice nurses are intelligent and compassionate,” he says. “They offer care, comfort and hope.”

There is also a relationship with post care personnel such as follow-up services, home visits, Veteran's programs at hospice, even with representatives at health fairs. “We work together for the community as a team with mutual respect and support,” Kerry said. “To a great extent, our first

On Mission to Serve the Veteran Community DANNY FARRAR OPENS UP ABOUT THE MISSION, VISION AND HEART OF THE NEW VETERAN SERVICES CENTER AT GOODWILL OF MONOCACY VALLEY ARTICLE BY KRISTEN WOJDAN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY LYTEBOX PHOTOGRAPHY

Hailing from a small town in Virginia, if you asked young Dannay Farrar where he would be and what he would be doing when he got older, he would tell you, “I would never join the army, I would never join the infantry and I would never jump out of planes.” Fast forward a few years, and Danny enlisted in the Army and served in the 82nd Airborne, 32nd Infantry, the Old Guard and a specialized unit created for Iraq to train and build the transitional force. Danny was a convoy escort for VIPs, serving in Iraq for several months and in the U.S. Army for eight years. As he transitioned to civilian life, Danny was hesitant to move to Frederick, but admits, “I moved here and fell in love with the place. I credit Frederick with giving me a second lease in life.” At the time, Danny had been accepted into the Montgomery County Fire Academy and he was preparing to start a new career in fire service. While waiting to get through the process, he started Soldierfit. Danny recalls, “I started Soldierfit two weeks before I went into the Fire Academy. I would go to the Fire Academy at 4:00 AM and train until 4:30-5:00 PM. Then, I would go train clients until 8-9 PM. Then I would go home to study. Then I would get a little sleep and do it all over again. I did that for 6 months.” Danny will tell you that he took the Fire Academy very seriously and it showed. He graduated top of his class in everything, earning three out of four awards: Fire Science, Physical Fitness and the Chief’s Award— Overall Best Recruit.

After graduating from the Fire Academy, Danny worked 24-hour shifts and then he would train clients. He served as a firefighter for five years and loved a lot about the service. As Soldierfit started to ramp up, he had a decision to make—stay with fire service or grow his fitness company. “I’m an all or nothing human,” Danny explained. “Either I’m doing it or I’m not. And, part of me in the back of my mind thought, ‘There is somebody who is dying for this [fire service] slot that I hold.’” He originally started Soldierfit in parking lots and leased spaces. Danny shared, “I needed to make some extra money, somehow, some way…Sometimes, I look back at all of this and think, ‘I don’t know how we made it.’ I was charging $25 for an hour of personal training.” Then he added, “There is something to be said for staying the course.” And, there’s a lot to say about the results from “staying the course.” Today, Soldierfit has thirteen locations throughout Maryland, Virginia and Pennsylvania. Danny also founded Platoon 22 with an original mission of preventing Veteran suicide. “My brother committed suicide. I attempted suicide. I’ve lost people to suicide,” Danny explained, “I wanted to help others and give support from a person who has been there and experienced it…Now I see the families who have lost loved ones to suicide. The stats don’t lie; children of people who have taken their lives are much more likely to take their own lives. It’s a ripple effect. We are doing our best to stop the cycle.” CONTINUED >

“The second aspect [of Platoon 22] has come to fruition through the Veteran Services Center,” Danny continued, “There is a social contract that we enter into with our service members…they should have the basic necessities. We provide volunteers to help them transition back into society and honor the promises made to those who served in the military…I want [Veterans] to understand that they are not taking anything from anyone. The only people they are taking from if they do not get treatment or ask for help, is from their families…I want them to know it’s okay to raise their hand and say they need help.” After five years of dreaming, collaborating and planning the Platoon Veteran Services Center (VSC) will open in November 2022! Everything is centered around the one goal to be the best-in-class at transitional support for Veterans. Danny will tell you that none of this would have happened without the incredible people on his team, especially Director of Opertations and Veteran Services, Niki Falzone, who he proclaims is “Batman to my Robin.” Danny emphatically continued, “And this would not have happened without Goodwill!...The partnership with Goodwill is so special. When we sat down together with the Maryland Secretary of Veteran Affairs to move the VA Center here, it was ‘WE’ that gave him the confidence to do it. Goodwill is an international organization that has decades of proven success

and [Platoon 22] has a passionate team to reach out to the Veteran community. Those two things put together allows us to be successful. It’s been five years to get to this point. It would not have happened without this partnership!” Holly Schor, Vice President of Maryland Operations at Goodwill Industries of Monocacy Valley, couldn’t agree more, “The partnership with the Platoon 22 team has been collaborative and rewarding…It is great when you can find likeminded passionate people who want to make change and get stuff done. That is what we have found working with the team. [Being new to Frederick], Platoon 22 has helped me navigate the community quicker than anticipated and helped the community understand Goodwill in a new way.” To explain the significance of the VSC being located in Frederick, Holly explained, “There are more than 340,000 Veterans in Maryland. About 70% of these Veterans will be within an hour’s drive from our Frederick center.” Holly adds, “Veterans are likely to not identify as a Veteran, which makes them less likely to seek out benefits to which they have access. By including various service providers into the center, we hope to create an opportunity to invite Veterans to explore resources they might otherwise have not taken advantage of. Once the building is open, Platoon 22 will be managing the day-to-day operations of the center on our behalf. Veteran community, with the hope to connect them to resources when they need them.” When asked what was the most important thing he wanted people to know about the Platoon Veteran Services Center, Danny shared the draft of the statement that will be placed on the wall between two oversized, metal silhouettes of soldiers to commemorate Sergeant Tyler Moore and Specialist Adam Richardson: “It’s been said that you die twice. Once on the day that you die, And again when your name is said for the last time. These two silhouettes represent two soldiers who committed suicide in Frederick County, which inspired us to start Platoon 22. It has become our mission to ensure that their names never die and their loss was not in vain.

This center exists to assemble the critical resources needed for successful transition back to civil society after completion of service. In their names, we stand vanguard, doing the good work to ensure that no more empty boots enter the formation of those Veterans lost to suicide.” Danny Farrar is a visionary leader who has made it his life’s mission to provide resources and support to Veterans and their families. After experiencing firsthand extreme loss, hurt and trauma, Danny shares, “I am a fan of the term ‘post traumatic growth.’ For people doing big things, there is something motivating them. A Story of

Resilience Dan Sullivan is Determined to Stay in the Fight 32

Daniel A. Sullivan IV, a former Special Forces Operator, Lead Firearms Instructor and current Frederick City Police Officer, is a true American hero. He went from living in a nursing home to serving as a full duty Frederick City Police Officer. Despite personal tragedies, Dan never gives up and is the epitome of resilience. A lifelong Frederick County resident (when not serving in the U.S. Army or attending college), Dan graduated from Mount St. Mary’s University with a BS Degree in Criminal Justice. He joined the Army Special Forces and served for three tours in Afghanistan. On his final tour, Dan was injured in a rocket attack that damaged his lower spine. While hospitalized in Germany, Dan was diagnosed with Cauda Euqina Syndrome (CES). CES is a condition where the nerves in the L5 spinal cord are damaged and fray giving the appearance of horsehair at the base of the spinal column. Dan returned to the States with a debilitating spinal injury. After an unsuccessful surgery left Dan in a nursing home—with no hope to ever walk again—he was given a second chance with Dr. Navinder Sethi, an Orthopedic Surgeon. Dan made a full and miraculous recovery. He is currently serving as a Frederick City Police Officer. Dan escaped three tours in Afghanistan, but could not have known he would fight three more battles at home; this time with cancer. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer, skin cancer and Pheochromocytoma (a rare, hormone-secreting tumor on his adrenal gland). Dan is a survivor, and he continues to stay in the fight. Just when things could not get worse, Dan endured every parent’s worst nightmare, the death of a child. Dan lost his seven-year-old son, Daniel Sullivan V, to a terminal illness, Metachromatic Leukodystrophy (MLD). MLD is a rare hereditary disease characterized by accumulation of sulfatides, which causes the destruction of the myelin sheath surrounding the nerves in both the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system. As he faces the pain of loss, every day Dan continues to stay in the fight. One way he does this is by giving back to his community and helping others in need.

Dan has taken these personal tragedies and turned them around for good. He diverted his focus on his pain and loss to his love for teaching. He continues to uphold his Special Forces Creed by teaching the skills vital for survival. In 2011, Dan formed L5 Tactical Training Group, a Veteran-owned Firearms Training company operated by active and retired police officers, lead firearms instructors, range masters, Special Forces, and former NSA/SWAT Team members, right here in Frederick County. L5 got its name when Dan and his friends were sitting around swapping war stories. They realized they had the same L5-S1 injury from their service on and off the battlefield. They have fused together with their extensive knowledge, expertise, special

operations and passion for educating the public about firearms, to form L5 Tactical Training Group. Dan created L5 because he is passionate about teaching. He believes that “If you fail, he fails.” Dan also believes, “it’s my job to make the students better than me.” The most memorable moment Dan had while teaching was a woman in her fifties who took the Handgun Qualifying License class (HQL). He said, “she was so scared... her hands were shaking.” Dan took her aside, talked to her and gave her stress management techniques to help calm her anxiety and fears. After the classroom instruction, they went to the rage to qualify for the HQL. She shot her first round into the target hitting the 10-ring. Dan shares, “It was a good feeling to see her become confident with a firearm.”

Dan is a real American success story! Despite Dan’s personal tragedies and the L5 injury that nearly crippled him, he continues to stay in the fight by giving back to his community and mentoring kids who want to become police officers and Special Forces soldiers. l5s1tactical.com
