Frederick County Goes Purple STANDING TOGETHER IN THE FACE OF OPIOID ADDICTION
THIS ONE’S PERSONAL. Or at least, by the time you finish reading this, it will be. Last week, one of your neighbors died as a result of an overdose. Another died the week before that, and another, the week before that. In fact, you have lost one neighbor almost every single week to opioid overdose for the past five years—in Frederick County alone. Let that sink in. Now, you’ve probably heard some things about the opioid epidemic, but perhaps never realized just how close to home it is. Opioid overdose is, in fact, happening in our own neighborhoods, on the streets we walk every day. It is happening to your friends, family and co-workers. The demographic who takes the biggest hit tends to be white men in the 35-50 age range, no economic indicators. Let’s take a momentary step back and look at the big picture here. The opioid epidemic started over thirty years ago, with a pocketful of lies. The American public was told that opioids do not cause addiction. Pharmaceutical companies twisted study results, assuring those in the healthcare field that patients could not become addicted to prescribed pain relievers. So—you guessed it—opioids were prescribed more readily and frequently. The result was entire communities overwhelmed with overdoses and deaths. At this time, street heroin became an easily accessible, cheaper substitute. And police, who were used to the gang model of drug-dealing, struggled to catch onto new suburban cellphone delivery models of drug usage.

“We can’t make the decision for them to recover, but when they do make the decision, they can’t do it without us.”
Fast-forward to last year, when there was a thirty percent national increase in fatal opioid overdoses. Here in Frederick, in just a ten week period, twenty people died. COVID forced people to remain isolated. Recovering addicts left sober houses. AA meetings were put on hold. There was no longer in-person support for those struggling and recovering. What’s more, the government handed out “free” money, which is often hard to manage for those in recovery and leads to relapse, according to national research. No support structure, increased stress, and a surplus of available money. It is a deadly equation. But there is hope. There is hope in community. Community gives someone a reason to not go back to an addictive substance. And we can be that community. Here’s where Frederick County Goes Purple comes in. Frederick County Goes Purple is a grassroots response among schools, businesses and individuals to help raise awareness about this issue, and to shout from the rooftops that, “There is help! There is hope! There is a community behind you!” Let’s be a community. Let’s really, truly, be a community. We must overcome the stigma, first. But keep in mind that we can overcome the stigma while still holding fast to truth. You see, drug addiction is dangerous and there is no denying that. But the danger is rooted in years of failure on the part of our society. People need connection. People need support, encouragement, and accountability. And this is especially true for those who are struggling with addiction. When one is isolated, the risk of relapse is much greater. We need to acknowledge and understand the danger of addiction and drugs, but at the same time, realize that these people struggling are our neighbors, our co-workers, our family. They are...us. And they need us.

We must “lean in and care...as an informed friend, family or coworker,” emphasizes Jon Switzer. “We can’t make the decision for them to recover, but when they do make the decision, they can’t do it without us.” Andrea Walker, Barbara Brookmyer, and Jay Hessler are three individuals who have led the Frederick County Health Department in raising awareness and directly helping recovering addicts. CORE, a peer recovery program in Frederick, offers a personal approach to recovery. The Phoenix Foundation helps teens in school who are struggling with addiction. You can—and should—get involved, too. Frederick County Goes Purple is a phenomenal way to do so. Frederick County Goes Purple is an awareness campaign that magnifies those on the ground doing amazing work: Frederick Rescue Mission, Celebrate Recovery, NA/AA, Olsen House, The Ranch, Faith House, CrossRoads Freedom Center, Maryland Heroin Awareness Advocates, Richard Carbaugh Foundation and Thurmont Addiction Counsel. The following are powerful action steps for you, your family and your business to consider: Decorate in purple—hang purple banners or install purple light bulbs. Wear “Frederick County Goes Purple” t-shirts (and other gear, which can be found on the website). Share the cause on your social media pages. And, importantly, take Purple Certification Training, which is intended for businesses and community members who want to become involved in helping prevent the rise of opioid addiction. (ACES—Adverse Childhood Experiences—taught by Karmin Jenkins, falls under this training as well). Every bit of effort goes a long way in showing the community that we are, in fact, a community who stands strong, and stands together. FrederickCountyGoesPurple.com

THE LEGACY CONTINUES IT’S SAFE TO SAY THAT THE AVERAGE PERSON JOINS THE AVERAGE GYM WITH HOPES OF IMPROVING PHYSICAL STRENGTH. Join a gym, become stronger. Run farther. Run faster. Lose weight. That’s the expectation, right? At least, for the average person, that’s what it tends to be. But you’re not the average person. And this most certainly is not the average gym. In fact, those close to the Y don’t call it a “gym” because it is so much more than that. Historically, the YMCA, the leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community, has played a major role in Frederick County and beyond. Basketball, volleyball and racquetball were initiated by the YMCA. Even camping and the public library became commonplace thanks to the organization. Ever since it began in the 1800s, the YMCA has been championing families and individuals regardless of their economic status or any other divide. It is and has always been rooted in the development of a well-rounded community helping to connect all people to their potential, purpose and each other. (Story continues on page 22)

When it comes to the YMCA of Frederick County, you’re
probably familiar with the downtown branch. However, the heartfelt story behind the newest location may come as a surprise. The South County YMCA branch had been twenty years in the making. That’s right, twenty years! The Natelli fam-
ily donated millions worth of land, conveniently located between Urbana middle and high schools, to the YMCA. But the land sat untouched for quite some time. Then after
INTERGENERATIONAL ROOM:
This unique set-up serves as a gathering space for teens, seniors, and everyone in between. Featured is a fireplace, large screen TV and courtyard. Teens can
dive into action using a virtual reality headset while their buddies finish up homework, complete a puzzle or watch some TV by the fireplace.
Chris Colville became CEO, campaigns began. Progress was being made! But unfortunately, that progress was set back when Frederick was hit with two floods, and fundraising for the new branch was put on hold to help the current downtown branch recover. To complicate things further, enter the pandemic of 2020. Indeed, the trials were great. But the dreams were greater.
GYMNASIUM: This is a full size gym featuring one basketball court (or three pickleball courts or two volleyball courts). An indoor track is elevated above the gym, allowing you to check out the action below. Sports equipment is available upon request, so meet your friends for a pick-up game!

FUN ZONE: This space offers safe, interactive activities for kids ages three months to ten years of age. Colorful, clean and cohesive, the Fun Zone is ideal for children whose parents are exercising at the Y. A spectacular two-story climbing structure complete with hoops, ropes and a slide allows kids to burn off all that extra energy!

AQUATICS:
The Y offers an 8-lane, 25-yard competition pool as
well as a family/class pool. This inclusive space is ideal
for swim teams, fitness classes and swim lessons. On one end is a zero-depth entry pool complete with tumble buckets, a frog slide and spray jets. A sauna is available, too!
A dedicated team, working alongside a group of passionate volunteers, board members and experts finally turned the years of planning into a tangible reality. These experts include Morgan-Keller Construction, GRO development, Zavos Architecture+Design, TRUE Fitness and Paddock Pools. Recently renamed The Natelli Family Y, this stunning structure now boasts a remarkable foundation—in both senses of the word. The facility itself is modern and sleek. Vast windows bring natural light into expansive rooms. A fireplace sets the mood for tranquility while an outdoor patio serves as a gathering place. A two-story play structure offers excitement for children. On the other hand, the Natelli Family Y sets the foundation for a healthy, growing community. A community in which every person is valued as both an individual and a part of the larger picture. A community in which personal goals are not just recognized, but are encouraged.

A building is nothing more than brick and mortar without
the people within it to give it life. The Natelli Family Y is about togetherness, camaraderie—whether you’re there for a pick-up basketball game, a treadmill run or afternoon programming.
As Kathy Brooks, of Dance Rhythm Vibz, puts it, “It’s more than a workout. There is a community built...friendships built.” For the YMCA community, a solid workout is only a fraction of the whole experience. You see, there’s so much more to the equation: the chance to try something new; the benefit of involving your family members in wellness; the promise of accountability to one another; the opportunity to leave differences at the door. Talk about a well-rounded experience. You will truly get more than “just” a workout, and that’s what the Natelli Family Y is intending. “It has been an honor to be a vital part of the fabric of a growing community that has been able to maintain that small-town feel while embodying all the characteristics of a new version of small-town America. We take great pride in maintaining that balance and feel that those who live and work here really embrace that spirit of community,” says Tom Natelli. FrederickYMCA.org

During the pandemic, families and friends used virtual platforms to combat social distancing. “Girls’ Night Out” became “Girls’ Night In” and game night shifted from tabletop to desktop. If you joined in on a virtual meal last year, you certainly weren’t alone! The ease of virtual connection allowed family and friends to connect across states or even countries—something worth continuing, especially over holidays!

DOING GOOD

Social distancing didn’t put an end to community service; if anything, it created opportunities for new ways to serve others. People delivered meals, gifts, even groceries. Continue to find ways to help others; it’s what makes a community! CityLifestyle.com/Frederick
