SPARKLE MORE STRESS LESS HAVE YOUR HOME HOLIDAY READY IN A JIFF
ARTICLE RHONDA STEPHENS | PHOTOGRAPHY REBECCA MITCHELL
THE THOUGHT OF GETTING THE HOUSE IN SHAPE FOR THE HOLIDAYS CAN SEND EVEN THE MOST ORGANIZED PERSON OVER THE EDGE. Sandra Garcia, of Sandra’s Cleaning and Organizing, says, “Don’t stress. This is a time of joy! It doesn’t have to overwhelm you if you make a plan.” Do one task per day leading up to the holidays. That way, it all gets done, and you haven’t even broken a sweat. Beyond cleaning, set yourself up for success by organizing your needs for the holiday cooking and baking and gift wrapping and storing. Hiring a professional organizer is a worthy investment for those who would like a more functional environment. Sandra says, “Organizing for me is like doing a puzzle. It doesn’t come easy for many people, but I love finding the perfect solution. I help people fall in love with their homes again!”

Rotary Club of Frederick
CELEBRATING 100 YEARS OF SERVICE
Courtesy of Rotary of Frederick
DESPITE THE CHALLENGE OF SOCIAL DISTANCING, THERE IS A YEARLONG CELEBRATION GOING ON. The Rotary Club of Frederick turned 100 years old this year, and even a pandemic won’t stop this party nor keep the Rotary Club of Frederick’s members from continuing their heart of service. Sometimes all it takes to have an impact on the world is to do something. According to Rotary.org, it all began because Paul Harris had a vision, and he did something. He gathered a diverse group of men together to exchange ideas and learn from one another with the hopes of developing meaningful, lifelong friendships. This small group of men, who first met together in 1905, sparked a Rotarian generosity movement with ‘doing good’ at the core. 16

Rotary International is the world’s oldest and largest service club organization, with more than 1.2 million members in 33,000 clubs worldwide, states Rotary.org. However, for many, Rotary has been more than a service organization. “Rotary has had a profound influence in my life,” says Justin Saltzman, president-elect. “I was part of the Interact Club, which is a Rotary Club for high schoolers. Through this group, I met my mentor, Tony Checchia. Tony was our Rotary liaison, who made a point to stop by our clothing drive. While there, he took the time to get to know a bit about me and invited me to

play soccer with his league,” Justin says. “That really changed my life, and because he reached back to bring me along, I am a part of the Rotary Club of Frederick.”
Lisa Coblentz led the project that provided care boxes to various nonprofits in the community.
The Rotary motto is “Service Above Self,” which is exemplified in the many ways that Rotarians work together to give back to the community. Justin adds, “The Rotary of Frederick is known for our signature event, Leprechaun Luau, which is when we raise money to give to the community in the way of grants. We also volunteer to ring bells for the Salvation Army, donate blood, participate in cleaning up Memorial Park, among the many other opportunities to serve. I am so thankful for the Rotary Club of Frederick and what it’s meant to me. It has been a great year of celebrating service.” FrederickRotaryClub.org CityLifestyle.com/Frederick

MARYLAND PROPERTY RENOVATIONS IT IS NOT SURPRISING THAT KYLE HARRIS ENJOYS WORKING WITH HIS HANDS. He’s been using his hands for productive hard work for as long as he can remember. “I grew up in Virginia, where my grandmother left to us a house that was one room on a concrete slab with a side room. I was into renovation work and construction long before I was old enough to think about having a career,” says Kyle. “Alongside my father, I worked on that house all my life, digging footings, building roofs, seeing things happen slowly over time. It’s where I learned to focus on the details. Doing it with our own hands and seeing a project take shape has helped me establish a lot of confidence in working

with my hands. Following in my father’s footsteps, I set off to become an electrician in a journeyman’s program straight out of high school,” Kyle says. Although Kyle had achieved his goal of becoming an electrician, he had dreams that would likely not happen within that career. Sizing up his options, he made a big life-changing move. “I saw it as an opportunity,” he says about enlisting in the Army. “I went into the military when I was a little older, knowing that it could provide a career and pay for my education. I was looking for an opportunity to serve my country. I thought it would give me something professionally that would align with my chosen career in the trades and I really wanted to travel. Enlisting would give me two to three different opportunities in one decision, so I raised my right hand,” says Kyle. In the Army, Kyle thrived on his job’s variety and mobile nature as a Human Resource Specialist and Combat Engineer. He utilized a mobile desk to provide support in the field. He finds similarities in his army occupation and as the owner and general contractor of Maryland Property Renovations. “I got a lot from my experience in the military. Running around providing support in the field and being mobile is something I enjoyed, and that translates to my current business,” Kyle explains. “I learned it is a pleasure to serve. I developed an ingrained understanding of how to look past the politics of working with people, which helped me create an unbiased way of looking at people, making it easy for me to work with anyone. And I like being in the position to help the customers get what they want from the company and the other way around.” Not only is Kyle handy with tools and ground-penetrating radar, but he is adamant when it comes to keeping his word. As a child, Kyle wrote to service members to support and encourage them. Despite never having received a response, he persisted. As an enlisted man in the Army, Kyle recalled the experience and how it felt never to receive a reply. So, he adopted a classroom in Connecticut and purposed to respond to all letters sent his way.

HOMETOWN HERO (CONTINUED)
“I had these kids write to me, and I wrote all of them back. When I got home, I went to Connecticut and surprised them at their school for this big pizza party. It was amazing. These kids were so great. They wrote to me the whole year—22 letters—and I wrote them back each time. When I went there, they were so surprised. It was a wonderful celebration,” Kyle recalls fondly. He remained committed to the second-grade class and returned as the commencement speaker for their sixth grade graduation. Kyle prides himself on being the face of MPR. He takes full responsibility for communicating with customers and ensuring that all expectations are understood and met. Speaking with conviction, Kyle says, “My approach to working with customers is first in, last out. I am the first person they interface with, and I am the last person to meet with them. I do that, so the customer knows I take responsibility for all work done,” he continues. “I am an old-school, face-toface, handshake kind of person. I want to revive that feeling of doing business with good people who are locals and want to make sure the customer has a personal experience superior to others. We focus on the details and can do projects from small to large.” Although Kyle is more than qualified, he is aware that he does not want to do it alone. He has wisely surrounded himself with the right professional people so that when a client calls, he can best meet their needs. “I know that I have the right designer for them. I have the right supplier for them and I have an entire network that I can rely upon so that we can make their project dreams come true,” he says. MPRReno.com.

DAMON EHRLICH, AN AGENT FOR NEW YORK LIFE INSURANCE COMPANY, IS PASSIONATE ABOUT EDUCATING OTHERS ON PROTECTING WHAT MATTERS MOST. He says, “Just as a house has a foundation, life insurance, disability insurance and long-term care insurance are foundational to financial peace of mind.” “We have two sons. My wife and I have protection in the form of life, disability and long-term care insurance so that our sons won’t have to quit their jobs and care for us,” says Damon. “I have seen what could happen in life and what does happen when people don’t prepare for the possibilities. There are too many GoFundMe pages for people who have passed without life insurance and need help with burial costs. It’s a sad situation when the surviving spouse and kids are left without any financial support and then have to move to a much lower standard of living.” Coming to work for New York Life following another career, Damon has found his niche. “I enjoy speaking with and educating people in terms of protecting their assets and their families. Protecting assets is essentially protecting all they have worked for and the monies they’ve built up to secure the future for themselves and their families. In educating them, I want to make sure they know about the tax obligation which may leave them with less financially than they had anticipated,” says Damon. “One of the best ways to protect assets is with an annuity,” Damon goes on to explain. “The strategy we use is to roll over a portion of the retirement savings into a guaranteed lifetime income annuity that leverages the gains made in the stock market. WALKING THE WALK
A JOURNEY DOWN THE WINDING LIFE PATH OF UNASSUMING SPIRITUAL LEADER FRANCIS CHAN
IMAGINE YOURSELF AS THE LEADER OF A THRIVING MEGACHURCH IN VENTURA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA, WITH MORE THAN 5,000 MEMBERS AND GROWING. You’re a New York Times bestseller making a million dollars in royalties from your first book and people love you—you’re on top of the world. Would you leave that all behind? Better yet, would you trade all of that, giving away 90% of your income to end up living in the poorest region of Hong Kong surrounded by people struggling to make it by on just 50 cents a day? For most, it probably sounds like a tale of riches to rags; an unfortunate and unwanted result of someone falling upon hard times. But for Francis Chan, a church planter and best-selling author who speaks to thousands of people around the world each year, it’s exactly what he did. And exactly what he needed—an opportunity to walk down a winding path that led him toward fulfilling his purpose; toward becoming a

Watch the full interview @ CityLifestyle.com! Francis, born in San Francisco, was raised in a very traditional Chinese home and navigated a challenging upbringing. His mother died while giving birth to him. His father remarried, then his stepmother died in a car accident when he was 8. His father remarried again, then, when Francis was 12, died of cancer. Twenty-six and newly married, Francis and his wife Lisa founded Cornerstone Community Church in Simi Valley, California in the early 90s, beginning with a membership of 30 people. Within the first two months, the church grew to 100. By 2000, membership grew even more to 1,600. And by 2008, Cornerstone Community Church was one of the largest in Ventura County and Francis’ then-new book “Crazy Love” was a New York Times bestseller. Then, in 2010, Francis decided to leave it behind in pursuit of a more humble and impactful way of life. The $1 million his bestselling book made in the first year, plus the money it continues to make? Francis signed it all over to a charitable gift fund helping the poor and victims of human trafficking. After making the decision to leave Cornerstone and wrestling with what the next step would be, Francis and Lisa ended up selling their Simi Valley house and moving their family of six at the time overseas to India, Thailand and China, where he was able to embrace new interests and activities by doing what the locals do, and where he also saw an inspiring shift in culture and spiritual values. “I wish we could learn and see the sacrifice of others,” he says. “Their mentality really isn’t a consumer mindset of ‘Here’s my needs, here’s what I feel, no one cares about me— me, me, me, me. Overseas they’re just obsessed with each other and thinking about how to get to the poor—the truly poor—like ‘We’re going to starve today,’ or ‘We’re selling off kids today.’ That type of poor. There’s just a lot more urgency.” In the throes of a pandemic, quarrels over U.S. politics, a growing divide among people and beliefs, and the unsurety of life, Francis’ message of focus and fulfillment can be summed up simply: take your eyes off yourself.

WHEN THEY SAY THEIR ROOTS ARE DEEP IN FREDERICK COUNTY, THEY MEAN DEEP. “We are all born and raised here, and now we are seven generations. I have 48 first cousins on my dad’s side and 220 second cousins,” says Dave Jr. with a grin. Hawkins Landscaping is a family business that’s been beautifying Frederick County for 46 years. The longevity of this company says a lot. “We started here, and we’ll be here. We have the seventh generation coming up,” says Grandpa, Dave Jr. “Our hearts are planted in Frederick County. We are involved in our community and give back by participating in charity fundraisers around the area. We do the Polar Bear Plunge each year for the Special Olympics because I have a stepdaughter with special needs, which means a lot to me. And equally important to me is lung cancer awareness because I lost my dad to it. We participate in the Walk a Mile for Heartly House, and we support the local high schools, middle schools and sponsor two baseball teams.” Dave Jr. began his company while in high school, mowing and beautifying lawns. From there, it grew and evolved with hard work and smart business moves. Through the years, Hawkins added more than simply landscaping and maintenance to their portfolio of services. “We do hardscaping, which includes patios, retaining walls, walkways, outdoor kitchens, decks and fences, water features and pergolas. Our other services include lighting for all outdoor spaces, retaining walls, grading or regrading for repairs, and outdoor fireplaces,” says Dave the third, better known as D3. Servicing both commercial and residential, they will do small and large projects, and building pools is something they’re thinking about for the future. “We value quality over quantity. We work here. We’re not going anywhere,” says D3. “We’re leaving to my boys, D4 and Ford Kent, a legacy of supporting others in giving back and of a business that operates with integrity.” CityLifestyle.com/Frederick
