CALENDAR YEAR. Summer freedom is drawing to a close, and the school bells will be ringing any day now. While the lazy days of sipping cool beverages poolside may be numbered, this month brings a sense of renewal. New routines, new clothes and new school supplies often come to mind in August. And for many of our readers, the nest is empty of kids and full of fur- or feather-covered children. So, we’ve come up with the perfect compromise this August—our Kids and Pets issue. Inside you’ll discover some pet-friendly locations in Frederick County. We’ll also give you an up-close-and-personal experience with Goat for the Soul yoga, a fun and back-to-nature experience for yogis of all ages. And the owners of the Goddard Schools in Urbana and Frederick share some hot tips for how to prepare children for pet ownership. This month, our Giving Back feature shines the spotlight on Blessings in a Backpack of Frederick, a nonprofit organization mobilizing communities and resources to provide food on the weekend for elementary school children in our community who might otherwise go hungry. And get ready to be inspired by local entrepreneur Kelly Jarvis as she leads the 11th year of the Tour de Frederick to raise funds for the Frederick County Boys and Girls Club and the Carroll Creek Rotary. So, whether your children walk on two legs or four, you’re sure to find something inside this special Kids and Pets issue. Cheers to another wonderful month ahead. We hope to see you around! With gratitude,

‘A FULL AND ADVENTURESOME LIFE’

REBECCA LACHANCE, THE VISUAL STORYTELLER OF THURMONT ARTICLE RHONDA STEPHENS "Through The Door: Thrushcross Grange" 14

PHOTOGRAPHY REBECCA LACHANCE

“I HAVE LIVED A VERY FULL AND ADVENTURESOME LIFE,” SHE SAYS WITH A HALF-SMILE. Globe trekker, iconographer and medical professional barely scratch the surface of the life lived by Rebecca LaChance; however, these days, you will find her in Thurmont, Maryland, passionately pursuing photography. In the photographic studio where she is busy at work, written on the front window is, “Artistic Portraiture,” and her work is just that. “I tell the clients that you must see the studio to understand what [artistic portraiture] is,” Rebecca says. Rebecca is a portrait photographer, but more than that, she’s a visual storyteller. “I was a nurse for nearly 40 years and got a Ph.D. in health economics and policy.” Her medical career brought her to Fort Detrick, but it wasn’t until the mid-1990s that she took an art class. With an interest in classical art, Rebecca studied the old masters. Going all in, she studied under a woman who had been the conservator of iconography for the Bishops’ Conference in Moscow.

“Esther and Luna”

“I’m very interested in classical art. The majority of the paintings I did were icons. All icons were painted using 14th-century techniques, and that’s what shows up in the work that I do. The information I accumulated from painting influences how I treat each piece of art and what the purpose of the art is,” she says. Going from painting to photography seemed like a natural transition. “I had been coming off several long careers, so I needed a break from people and began landscape photography.” Rebecca was greatly influenced by Carolyn Mendelsohn Eaglesham, winner of the Gold Medal from the Royal Photographic Society in England. It was she who called Rebecca to do a Wuthering Heights shoot and encouraged her that she could, indeed, pursue portrait photography. When stepping inside Rebecca’s studio, you might be convinced that the photographs lining the walls are not photographs at all. Some of the pieces of art appear to be vintage, while others, oil paintings. The process begins as Rebecca seeks out the story of the subject, and when she feels she knows the story, it is then that she creates. In order to do this, she must take the time to know the subject. “I spend a lot of time with each client. I bring them in and have an interview with them. Who do you want to be? Who are you? Tell me your dreams. What do you want people to see about you that they don’t know?” she asks. From that session, the art unfolds. Using lenses and lighting as her tools, she relies on an inner instinct that directs her. “If something says for me to do this or that, then I do it!” Because her desire is to tell the subject’s story, the photographs are digitally manipulated to create these artistic effects that reflect her vision of the subject. Rebecca notes that people are often reticent to come in to be photographed.

GOAT FOR THE SOUL

“IT’S A LOT OF WORK, BUT THE ENJOYMENT WE BRING TO OUR CLASS PARTICIPANTS IS WELL WORTH IT.”

OF ALL THE FADS IN FITNESS, GOAT YOGA HAS GOT TO BE THE CUTEST AND BEST AT DE-STRESSING EVER! Every weekend, Goat for the Soul offers yoga at the Yingling Farm in Union Bridge. And four to five times a month, the Yingling family loads up their lovable mommas and babies—goats, that is—and heads out to a location near you to lay some goat love on folks practicing yoga. Downward dog pose is no obstacle for these agile ruminants, and as the yogis breathe and stretch, they may find a curious face nudging their own—or four tiny hooves balanced upon their backs. It’s hard to keep concentrating, but they try. Some give in to the cuddles sought by the momma or to sheer delight as the tiny baby leaps and races across them and around the class. The Yingling family—Christy, Paul, Clay and Grace—raises goats on a small farm in Union Bridge. They also raise horses, pigs, chickens, cats and dogs. “We had all the goats, we had the land, we had the inclination, so we started doing it!” Christy says. “It’s a wonderful source of income for the farm.” Partnering with local businesses has brought attention to the farm and the fun of the experience. “We partner with local businesses. Each weekend, we’ll do an event at a local winery or brewery,” Christy says.

TAKING ON HUNGER ONE SCHOOL AT A TIME

ARTICLE RHONDA STEPHENS

Frederick Lifestyle | August 2019

HUNGER DOESN’T TAKE THE WEEKEND OFF. Formerly a teacher and longtime Frederick resident, Hermine Bernstein recalls being at the dentist’s office and reading in People magazine about Blessings in a Backpack being the award winner of the 2012 Charity of the Year. “I thought to myself, ‘I wonder if there’s a problem to this magnitude in Frederick,’ she says. “So, I went back home and started doing some research and discovered that, at that time, there were more than 10,000 children in Frederick that were at risk of going hungry when school meals were not available. That number has risen to more than 11,000 today. It is a surprise to learn the extent that this impacts families.” Armed with the startling statistics, Hermine couldn’t sit back. “I think it was the first time that I realized how broad the problem was and also the depth of the problem locally. I didn’t realize that. And once I did, it just grabbed my heart, and I just knew this is what I would be doing.” Hermine founded the local chapter of the national program Blessings in a Backpack. Each week during the school year, volunteers pack nonperishable, kid-friendly, easy-prep food for the kids. The food is enough for each day they are not in school during the 38-week school year. As an all-volunteer organization, 75 to 90 volunteers every week pack in 12 different school locations. “It is a huge operation. This school year, we packed about

950,000 items of food into more than 100,000 weekend backpacks,” Hermine says. “It’s a true labor of love!” It costs surprisingly little—$100 to feed an individual child for an entire school year. “When we go into a school, we make the commitment that we are going to feed 100% of the children who are at risk of going hungry, and so we do. There are swim and lacrosse teams, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, youth groups and community groups who pitch in to serve, as well as a large number of people who come to serve every week. I don’t do it alone. It was nothing but a good idea until the volunteers stepped up. Everybody gives back in the way that they are able.” Thanks to one woman who saw a need and stepped up to fill it, hungry students in Frederick County have Blessings in a Backpack. The Tour de Frederick Cycles Around

ARTICLE RHONDA STEPHENS PHOTOGRAPHY JESSICA PATTERSON PHOTOGRAPHY

KELLY JARVIS IS THE TOUR DE FORCE BEHIND THE TOUR PULLING HER BIKE OFF THE CAR RACK, KELLY JARVIS WELCOMES ME WITH A BIG SMILE. She is here at the school to participate in yet another event. Who could even keep up? She is a wife and mother of three, owner of Changeup Marketing, co-owner of Fit2Shine Studio in New Market, and now she’s taken on the huge responsibility as the director of the Tour de Frederick. In its 11th year, this multi-route bicycling event is a fundraiser for the Frederick County Boys and Girls Club and the Carroll Creek Rotary. The Tour de Frederick includes multiple cycling routes from 10 to 100 miles through the rolling hills of Frederick County and scenic, covered bridges. Taking place on two days, Aug. 10 and 11, the event kicks off with registration Aug. 9. Registration as a rider is $85, but you can join a team, which is two or more people, and commit to raise $200 or more. The goal for the number of participants this year is 700 riders. “You can put the money in yourself, or you can go ask people to support you. This is a great opportunity to give back to Frederick.” Kelly says. “We also have sponsorships. I have been floored by how amazing all of the business owners are and how they’ve come around to support the Tour de Frederick. People have just come out of the woodwork to help. It’s amazing! There is a heart of service in Frederick.” Being the director is a big project, but Kelly is up for the challenge. She particKelly Jarvis and her family love to bike around Frederick County. 24

ipated in the last few tours and managed its social media. But as director, now she’s managing all the details.

“I handle logistics and permitting, ensuring safety, bringing in the sponsors, fundraising and making sure we are able to give a solid contribution to the Boys and Girls Club and Rotary of Carroll Creek,” she says. “This role marries all of my gifts and passions. You’ve got the cycling element, then promotions and marketing, sponsorships, working with local businesses to help promote their brands, and the nonprofit angle of supporting the Boys and Girls Club of Frederick and the Carroll Creek Rotary—two things I’m very passionate about. Service. Service is at the key. It’s always been the key of my life, and so now to get to do this. It’s a dream come true.” TourDeFrederick.com

Choose your route carefully. Find a park or private road with very few cars and room for error. New or young riders need a comfort zone to make mistakes safely and get back up again. Wear helmets! No matter your age, helmets are a must for every ride, every day, every time! And make sure they fit properly. Helmets should be snug around the head and tied tight around the chin. Protect that noggin! Bring sunscreen. A bike ride is no fun if you come home with a burn. Keep the fam safe from the sun, and reapply if you’re out for a long time. Bike check! Make sure your bike is in riding condition. Check the seat setup for height, make sure the tires have air and that chains are on properly. Remember your ABC Check: Air, Brakes, Chain. Don’t forget water and snacks. Staying hydrated and nourished is important for all riders, but especially little ones.

FREDERICK, AND YOU’LL FIND DOGS AND THEIR OWNERS ON EVERY CORNER. Restaurants and corporate offices alike are becoming more and more pet-friendly. On Market Street, you’ll almost always find the Brewer’s Alley patio brimming with patrons and their dogs. Thanks to owner and dog lover Phil Bowers, they have been pet-friendly since the beginning 23 years ago. “People have really enjoyed bringing their dogs, for people to see dogs and for their kids to enjoy,” says manager Travis Vaughn. Their patio is spacious enough for people with big dogs, small dogs or no dogs to enjoy a cold brew and the company of their furry companions. Just down the way, you’ll find another restaurant looking forward to seeing visitors of a different species. You can’t miss the brightly colored dog bowls scattered around the table legs in Pistarro’s outdoor dining space, beckoning customers to bring their dogs and stay a while.

ANIMAL KINGDOM

Pets and kids can be a winning combination HOW TO PREPARE FOR PET OWNERSHIP PETS ENRICH THE LIVES OF MANY CHILDREN AND FAMILIES. While there are many benefits for children to grow up having a pet in the home, keep safety in mind when choosing a pet for your family.

CHOOSE WISELY. Select the breeds or species that are a good fit for your family, your home and your lifestyle. Important characteristics to consider in selecting a pet are behavior, temperament, excitability and size. Pets should be disease-free and regularly checked by a veterinarian, and family allergies should also be taken into account. Young children should always be supervised during interaction with pets, as animals can be easily harmed or provoked and may attack if hit, poked or grabbed. Children should be taught to play gently with pets and to keep their distance when an animal is eating, sleeping or caring for their young. BE INVOLVED PARENTS. Planning and open discussion are necessary for a family pet to be a positive experience. Younger children can help with pet care but can’t be completely responsible. They may only be able to help with a few small tasks such as feeding, cleaning or grooming the pet. For example, your child can join you when walking the dog but certainly shouldn’t walk the dog alone. Allow your child to help care for the family pet in small, safe ways and always under adult supervision. PETS ARE BENEFICIAL. Positive relationships with pets can encourage children to love and trust others. Bonding with a pet helps ARTICLE JOHN AND JILL PELICANO AND SHEEBA MATHEW

young children to develop nonverbal communication, compassion and empathy. Caring for pets teaches children responsibility. Both children and animals need exercise, and pets are great playmates and a fun way to add physical activity into a child’s day.

EAT WELL, SURF OFTEN Surf House Island Cantina opened its doors in March of 2016. The restaurant specializes in coastal cuisine, American classics with a beachy, Latin twist, and delicious cocktails made with dailysqueezed fruit juices. An open kitchen with famously fresh food is complimented by a captivating atmosphere: palm trees, vibrant colors, and beautifully decorated surf boards that line the walls of the restaurant and complete the island cantina vibe.
