LIFESTYLE LETTER
Celebrating our love of all things local
February 2024 PUBLISHER
Athena West | athena.west@citylifestyle.com E D I TO R
With the holidays and new year celebrations now behind us, we warmly welcome the month of February. This issue is dedicated to "Love Local," celebrating the uniqueness of our community by spotlighting some of Franklin’s exceptional local businesses and locations. From resident John Wooten’s interesting journey from police officer to wealth advisor, to the creative flair of a passionate cake designer, and the literary endeavors of a local author, we showcase the diverse talents that make our community thrive. We are delighted to introduce you to Container Creations owner Kim Hayes, who graciously shares her journey to "inviting hospitality." Discover the mission of the local non-profit Oddity Improv, dedicated to bringing laughter and confidence to Franklin, insights into up-and-coming hair trends, and a heartfelt celebration of Franklin's own 102-year-old Miss Maxine. We invite you to learn about the initiatives of the Downtown Franklin Association, including their "Local Love" offers just in time for Valentine's Day! Of course, we also present Valentine's Day shopping and date night suggestions, and, for those planning to stay in, don't miss the delicious recipe for Raspberry Cheesecake Stuffed "Bonuts," a delightful treat to sweeten your celebration. Be sure not to overlook the chance to dive into the feature about our local cover star, Melissa Joan Hart, as she discusses her "What Women Binge" celebrity podcast. As we navigate the delicate balance between the chill of winter and the promise of spring, we hope the stories within these pages inspire you to deepen your love for our community and celebrate the unique treasures that make Franklin the extraordinary place it is.

NASHVILLE BASED 931 BEAUTY CO. UNVEILS REVOLUTIONARY FDA APPROVED HAIR PROSTHETIC SOLUTION TO HAIR LOSS. Statistically, by age of 30, 1 in 4 men and 12 percent of women will experience hair loss outside the normal scope of daily shedding. “Hair loss can be a very humbling, confusing and lonely experience. It can be disorienting to lose what we associate with youth and vitality” says Jessie Mobley, owner of 931 Beauty Co. “I kind of went down a rabbit hole when I started seeing how many beautiful men and women were struggling with hair loss and really struggled to find attainable, natural solutions for this issue. After many years of research, we’ve been able to compile a variety of solutions for our clients, including hair extensions, epigenetic testing, trichology treatments and most recently our partnership with CRLabs and bringing in the CNC hair Prosthesis system. I think the most important factor when it comes to creating solutions is finding a totally personalized way to address what’s going on.”
Many times, when a client comes in, they will have tried a number of things on their own at home from magic growth serums they found on Facebook to special shampoos that a targeted ad suggested for them. Our goal is to use science to procure a solution. At intake, clients receive a scalp examination and hair follicle test. After the testing we are able to provide a specific regimen for at home treatment or in salon services to help restore the hair. In some instances, the hair loss is beyond environmental and that’s when we would recommend a client to navigate into a prosthetic hair solution. The CNC Prosthesis is the sole FDA-approved hair prosthetic covered by numerous insurance providers. Vanessa Teemsma, general manager of 931 Beauty Co. says, “What’s beautiful about the CNC prosthesis is it’s actually a medical device created in a lab by hand in the Cesare Regazzi laboratory in Italy. Designing them together with our clients is incredibly rewarding because it allows us the opportunity to help our clients get their life back. The CNC hair prosthetic system is a completely customized, cutting-edge product that incorporates 3D scanning and casting to ensure an exact fit.” These images and castings are delivered to the laboratory in Italy. Lab technicians manually graft individual virgin hairs into the base to mimic the natural distribution, movement and density of the client’s bio hair. The prosthetic will then be fitted without having to shave off any of the underlying hair which is something many other systems cannot promise. Whether a client comes in with simple thinning, chemotherapy induced hair loss, or complete alopecia, the hair loss specialists at 931 Beauty Co. can help men and women regain their confidence. “It’s truly the small things we take for granted. Our prosthetics allow clients to wash their hair, go in the ocean while on vacation, or hit the gym often as they’d like.” Says Jessie,...
Jessie Mobley Owner
“Our motto is elevating beauty, inspiring confidence and we truly hope to help provide healing to those who suffer from hair loss. There are a lot of hard things in the world right now, your hair doesn’t have to be one of them.” Vanessa Teemsma General Manager

Writer and Franklin resident Jim Cheney has published a second novel that pursues an in-depth analysis of young men struggling with selfdoubt and redemption in the wake of a wayward culture that evolved in the seventies and manifested in the late eighties and early nineties. One Black Day is set in retrospection of generations whose lives were intertwined, but also fiercely independent of one another. One Black Day is available at online bookstores along with his first book, All Is Set Anew.

“The Parker House on Main was opened with not much more than faith and a prayer. Some would say I was in over my head but I had a knowing which still holds true. I wanted to create something uniquely different, an experience I like to call “Down to Earth Luxury.” After nearly 20 years in the industry I felt called to create an environment filled with creativity and one that truly cultivates a sense of unity. I’ve been embraced by our community and all its friendly faces with Franklin’s small town charm. I’m so proud to say The Parker House on Main is now full of incredible talent. We have acquired an amazing team of stylists from New York to L.A. and even my old stomping grounds, Newport Beach, California. Each stylist has a distinctive aesthetic that raises the bar however, don’t take my word for it, check it out for yourself @theparkerhouseonmain and leave us a message to let us know what you think. With so many irons in the fire for this coming year I look forward to sharing the newly refined Parker House experience. Stop by, say hello, and grab your sweetheart a little something special. Oribe gift sets are now an additional 20% off and beautifully packaged for your Valentine. Looking back, I’m so thankful for this town I get to call home. Franklin has definitely left a lasting impression on me and we have only just started.” Sincerely, Samuel Allen Owner / Stylist

L ov ing It aly L oc ally Donna McClanahan Brings The Beauty Of The Mediterranean to Franklin
Donna McClanahan knew something was amiss when she saw crumbs scattered across her counter and bowtie pasta randomly dropped on her mantle. She suspected there was a mouse. She went for a walk, thought about the situation and came up with a poem, which she turned into a children’s book. Donna did not end up publishing that one, but she did write more books and published, There’s a Pig in my Pantry, which is available at her “booth-tique,” Ciao Bella, at the Painted Tree in Franklin. The process of getting the book published helped her to become business tough and acquire knowledge that she uses today. Donna believes that each bump in the road brings a new opportunity. Having moved every few years due to her husband Gary’s job with UPS, as well as playing professional tennis herself, she is used to new adventures. Donna and Gary decided to move to Franklin in 2020 to be closer
to their son who lives in Bellevue. After attending a wedding in Ireland the following year, the couple decided to also visit Italy. It was there that Donna fell in love with the beauty of the lifestyle, the food and the Italian people. “When we got back I wanted to keep Italy in my heart, but after a few weeks it started to fade,” Donna says. She decided to bring Italy to her and opened her “booth-tique” Ciao Bella, in March 2023. Although she never imagined running her own business, Donna firmly believes that things happen for a reason. “If something doesn’t work out there is a better idea,” she says. Now she has a business importing beautiful Italian goods from leather and clothing to chocolates. “I always think my trips to Italy cannot get any better, but Italy never lets you down,” she says. She is thrilled to be able to share that spirit and beauty with others. Instagram: @CiaoBella.Franklin

“The recording process has been blood, sweat, tears—everything you can imagine—trying to figure out what works best for us in the studio.” — MAL ARIE MCCONAHA
Franklin-based duo The FBR is celebrating the January release of debut album Ghost, a project tinged with country, rock, and blues influences. Comprised of Malarie McConaha and Tim Hunter, the band recently wrapped a residency at Lieper’s Fork watering hole Fox & Locke and had the opportunity to try out new material during three-hour sets at the venue where they first met. “We’ve been working together for eight or nine years,” says lead singer McConaha. “Early on, we didn’t know what our musical journey was going to look like.” The FBR started as an acoustic duo and grew to include a full band. Their debut single, “Rain On,” was released during the pandemic and gained traction online. More recently, the new song, “Before I Drown,” garnered even more streams. “The recording process has been blood, sweat, tears—everything you can imagine— trying to figure out what works best for us in the studio,” says McConaha. The duo agrees that through the process they learned to trust their guts and were glad to have room to experiment. They also appreciated the input

and talents of their backing band. “In the studio, they were creative and fun. That’s what gives it a different sound,” says Hunter, who brings a background in classic literature to his songwriting. “It was old-school live tracking. That’s where the music takes another life.” McConaha and Hunter met after she performed at an open mic night at then-Puckett’s and quickly bonded over a shared appreciation for musician Leonard Cohen. Eventually, their relationship led them to form The FBR, named in honor of Cohen’s song “Famous Blue Raincoat.” “His influence kept interweaving through the fabric of our lives,” says Hunter, sharing the little-known fact that Cohen spent two years living in Lieper’s Fork in the 1970s. The FBR’s other influences can be found in their music, including renowned singer-songwriters and storytellers John Prine, Jason Isbell, Brandi Carlile, Fleetwood Mac, Guy Clark, Janis Joplin, and Emmylou Harris. But McConaha and Hunter enjoy making music all their own. “It’s a very collaborative process,” she says. “It’s magic that way.” FBRMusic.com

What’s In For 2024
A New Year Brings New Hair
When Gaven Smith first opened Studio Gaven Hair Colour, it was with a mindset of career, coaching, and training. So it’s no surprise that the nearly 70 team members at the salon share that same growth and advancement mentality. Continually exploring and sharing new looks, techniques, and hair care solutions, here’s a sampling of trends the Studio Gaven team of colorists and stylists expect to see in 2024. Trends overall are leaning toward a more relaxed, lived-in style. For women, crops, bobs, and pixies will still be in, but with more effortless and relaxed styling. Last year saw the shag make a comeback and the return of curtain bangs and we expect evolving versions of those same styles this year. There is also an appreciation for slightly tousled waves that take advantage of natural textures. And, a sense of freshness and originality is still an overall wish for many.
For men, the styling game will be similar and include shorter hair with fades, taper, quiffs, and curls– all accentuating individual style. For hair care, the guys are reaching for professional hair pomades and creams to help define, texturize and finish off the look. — Tony Souki, Stylist
Hair color- Softly blended face-framing highlights are still highly desired and whether brunette or already blonde, the “pop” around the face is still in along with warm tones. Ashy blondes are even starting to opt for a more natural golden tone. In keeping with that warm theme, we are seeing more brave souls branch out and request red and we are here for it! The right red hair color showcases natural skin tones beautifully. And for those longtime blondes feeling washed out, the timeless deep chocolate brown is also making a comeback. To maintain warm, shiny, healthy hair look for sulfate-free products that help strengthen hair while preserving intended hair color. — Casey Gilley, Stylist, Educator and Salon Shareholder CONTINUED >

Textured Hair- It’s essential to maintain the health of textured hair, especially if it is dry or experiencing breakage. Look for professional products such as Shu Uemura’s izumi rice water tonic to help strengthen fragile hair. And those beautiful curls can also present their own set of styling challenges. Understanding and experiencing different curl types and shrinkage is important when working with textured hair while washing and blow-drying to see the hair wet, how it curls, and how much it shrinks is important to achieve the desired look. — Bri Dodson, Salon Stylist Alternative

Hair Solutions- Handtied and weft extension methods will continue to dominate as well as more customization and incorporation of multiple methods and alternative hair pieces for top coverage. The key to healthy hair extensions is in the method and the maintenance and are essential for a healthy scalp and hair growth. Treating extensions daily with a moisture product and avoiding products that contain protein, sulfates and parabens will help ensure longevity of extensions. — Lauren Keck, Stylist, Educator and Salon Shareholder. One overall trend that we can all agree on is the continuation of improving hair health in 2024. Dana Funk, Salon Director notes that guests continue to seek out a personalized hair care regimen for healthier, stronger, high-shine hair, whatever the color or style – all part of the Studio Gaven experience. HOW CONTAINER CREATIONS BRINGS LIFE TO THE NASHVILLE COMMUNITY
In the heart of Franklin, nestled within the tapestry of changing seasons, blooms a story of passion and botanical artistry. Founder and visionary of Container Creations, Kim Hays, says that her business is more than potted plants, but a tale of finding peace woven with dirt, devotion, and a spiritual connection with nature. What started as a hobby for the former educator, soon turned into a business when her passion for understanding how plants thrive in certain environments was met with creativity. As Kim’s youngest child ventured into his senior year, she found herself at a crossroads, contemplating the next chapter. Thus, Container Creations was born, a haven where soil met a soul. Kim and her husband, Keith, live in Franklin, surrounded by a supportive family and a business team of amazing people who share her passion and love of people and nature. For her, it isn’t just about planting; it is about the spiritual communion with nature she feels and the quiet moments she spends with her hands immersed in the earth planting, watering, and caring for all kinds of plants and flowers. Container Creations is a seasonal subscription service for outdoor container arrangements for homes and businesses. Each client receives a custom-designed potted
arrangement with detailed instructions and extra tips and accessories to help keep them looking beautiful throughout the season. The emotion Kim experiences when she walks through her door, greeted by thriving flowers, mirrors the inner peace she aims to share with the rest of the community. It’s the emotional journey that resonates with clients, which reveals the value of nurturing tangible beauty and the longevity it brings. “Inviting hospitality” – Kim’s brand ethos encompasses more than just aesthetics. It is about inviting people to cultivate a sense of warmth and self-care, mirroring the nurturing process of tending to plants. In downtown Franklin, amidst the urban bustle, her touch graces 19 planters by the benches. “It is an honor to get to do those planters,” she says. “I am filled with joy providing a touch of hospitality to those visiting and equally to long-time natives who spend their mornings and evenings strolling the streets with their furry companions. For me, it is simply a way to love others and welcome them to our town.” Container Creations is about nurturing life, cultivating art, embracing the peace nature so graciously offers and inviting others to share in these experiences. a gift that K EEPS GI V ING THE GIVING GARDEN GENER ATES MORE THAN JUST FOOD ARTICLE BY CHRISTINA MADRID | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
The Giving Garden was founded in 2009 after a member of the Franklin First United Methodist Church (FUMC) asked the pastor if he could use a section of the of the church’s land to show kids how pumpkins are grown. No one anticipated it would lead to a thriving garden that produces food for more than 5,000 people weekly. Today, the Giving Garden sits on six acres and grows everything from turnip greens to potatoes. “We produce and distribute to our distribution partners, approximately 40,000
58

pounds of vegetables annually,” says Gary Markham, the chair of The Giving Garden board. The Giving Garden grows and harvests a lot of produce, but it also has a close relationship with the farmers from the Franklin Farmer’s Market. Partnerships with organizations such as the Nashville Food Project, the Branch of Nashville, Meals on Wheels, and The Well Outreach help ensure food is distributed to those in need in Nashville and in Williamson and Maury counties. The church also started The Giving Garden On The Go. “We take the food directly to the people living with food insecurity,” says Jody Todd, the Director of Marketing and Communications at Franklin FUMC. “Sometimes food insecurity is not just about not having enough food. We can meet the needs of hunger and friendship.”
The garden has become an important mission of the church and is operated entirely by volunteers, many from the City Service Mission, but all are welcome. “It is like an open door,” explains Jody. “We accept people in all different areas in their life.” In essence, the garden grows food, and feeds the soul. “The Giving Garden brings smiles to those who work in the garden and to those who receive from it,” says Gary. It is a great reminder that through giving, we receive. FranklinFirstUMC/Garden.org

local love for downtown franklin 60
O UR TOWN | S HO P P I NG
ARTICLE PROVIDED | PHOTOGRAPHY BY HERITAGE FOUNDATION OF WILLIAMSON COUNTY: KRIS RAE PHOTOGRAPHY
The Downtown Franklin Association (DFA) is proud to announce its inaugural "Local Love" event this Valentine’s Day. This special occasion is to show appreciation for the residents of Williamson County who continue to shop and dine locally in our beloved historic district. "With the tremendous growth that has taken place downtown over the years, DFA wants to show special appreciation for the locals that continue to shop and dine here as the district grows busier," shares the DFA Managing Director, Heidi Hood. "It's the support of the locals that shaped this district into the destination it is today, and the merchants collectively have rallied to thank them for this support and continue to offer them a great experience." As charming and iconic as it has become, historic downtown Franklin was not always the destination it is today. Since its founding in 1984, the Downtown Franklin Association (DFA) has spearheaded the revitalization of Franklin’s historic downtown core. Working in partnership with downtown property owners, business owners, preservationists, city and county government, and the Heritage Foundation of Williamson County, TN – the Downtown Franklin Association has helped create one of the nation’s Main Street success stories. Now, Downtown Franklin boasts an award-winning Main Street, a stunning collection of Victorian buildings and a host of accolades. It continues to earn national recognition as an authentic, eclectic place that offers something for everyone in an atmosphere that reminds locals and visitors alike of a simpler time in our history – a place where community matters. "This Main Street success story would not have been possible without the local stakeholders that sacrificed, donated, volunteered, and advocated for its intentional economic growth and development while preserving its historic charm. We hope the residents of Williamson County will feel the warmth and appreciation the merchants have for them by enjoying a special experience downtown this coming Valentine's Day," states Hood. Williamson County residents can present their ID at checkout (designated locations only) on Valentine's Day to receive showers of love from the local small businesses listed below that appreciate them so much. The Founder’s Story: After a tough bout with COVID I struggled to concentrate, was tired all day, and had a hard time remembering simple tasks. After much research I concluded Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) may help me, however the cost and time commitment of going to a facility deterred me from pursuing treatment. Instead, I chose to purchase my own HBOT chamber and began using it consistently in the comfort of my own home. I saw consistent progress in my healing journey and eventually felt like my old self. When my son injured his knee and required physical therapy, he also began using HBOT in our home. Ultimately, his doctors released him from PT several months early stating the combination of his PT and HBOT helped quicken his healing. Additionally, his sleep, mental clarity and performance in the gym also improved drastically. Our personal pursuit for wellness taught my son and I that consistency in using HBOT helped our personal, physical, and mental well-being. Todd Russell and Hudson Russell Co-Founders

CAN YOU FIND FRANKLIN’S NEWEST BAR? 66
H OT SP OT | FO O D + BEVERAGE
ARTICLE BY KELLIE WALTON
Breaking news: Downtown Franklin has welcomed a new speakeasy. During prohibition in the 1920s, these hidden bars were popping up all over the country to delight devious drinkers while alcohol was outlawed. Now, they’re experiencing a welcomed – and much more legal – resurgence, and we’re thrilled to welcome such a hidden (literally) gem to Franklin. Moving from its former home on Westhaven’s Front Street to a larger space just off the square, Amendment XVIII Cocktail Club maintained its menu of impressive cocktails and moody interiors, but with a mysterious twist. “We wanted to add a high-end craft cocktail bar that we believed to be missing from downtown Franklin,” shares Dean Marsh, owner of Amendment XVIII Cocktail Club. “We deliver a unique craft cocktail experience which compliments the high-end restaurants in the area. Many of our guests choose to come in for appetizers and drinks before dinner, or a nightcap afterward.”

Second Hand Rose cocktail

H OT SP OT | FO O D + BEVERAGE
While a suppertime stroll down Main Street may entice people with illuminated signs and iconic marquees above restaurants and bars, getting to Amendment XVIII takes a level of insider info: You must walk to the alley behind Mellow Mushroom, go through the service door, then locate a gray metal box on the left side of the wall. Inside, you’ll find a “Frankenstein” switch that, when pulled, triggers a green light and alerts staff that you’re waiting. A host will greet you, and then lead you through an unassuming door that reveals swanky interiors. “We provide guests with an enriching experience that goes beyond just drinking,” Marsh says. “We aim to stimulate the senses, educate the palate, and create an atmosphere conducive to enjoying the artistry and craftsmanship of expertly made cocktails. The hope is that guests leave with a sense of curiosity, perhaps wanting to explore more about the history of speakeasies or the stories behind the cocktails they enjoyed.” No matter your drink of choice, the experts behind the bar at Amendment XVIII can make something for every palette. There are pages of carefully-crafted signature cocktails ranging from a reimagined Old Fashioned, The Volstead, made with aged Haitian rum, rye whiskey, sherry, and coconut bitters for a Caribbean twist, or the vibrant From Mayan Sunsets made with tequila, gin, jalapeno, cucumber, agave, and Tajin seasoning salt. The bar also boasts a collection of beer and wine, as well as spirits
to craft just about any off-menu cocktail desired. “The skilled mixologists behind the counter craft concoctions that transcend the ordinary, blending classic recipes with modern twists,” Marsh shares. “Many of our syrups & bitters are meticulously crafted, in-house, for each of our artisanal cocktails. Guests might take away a greater appreciation for the culinary aspects of mixology, seeing cocktails as more than just beverages but as culinary expressions.” If you’re looking for a pre-dinner bite, Amendment XVIII offers a small plates menu including BBQ meatballs, breaded chicken bites, sliders, bacon-topped mac and cheese, and a charcuterie board, plus desserts from Merridee’s Breadbasket down the street (or, alley). Marsh shares that during prohibition, speakeasies sold “lockers” people could rent to store bottles, since consuming one’s own alcohol in a private establishment wasn’t outlawed. In keeping with tradition, Amendment XVIII launched an exclusive Locker Club. If you plan to frequent the new haunt you can hop on the waitlist for the club, which offers access to a private liquor storage locker as well as reservation scheduling capabilities and access to rare spirits. It appears it’s, once again, the roaring 20s in Franklin, so don your best flapper dress and zoot suits and we *won’t* see you at Amendment XVIII. a18club.com

On the surface, police officers and financial advisors don’t appear to have much in common. But according to John Wooten, there are some important similarities. As a financial advisor for Capital Wealth Advisors, Wooten works daily with clients to help them reach their financial goals. And in terms of establishing trust and achieving a sense of personal fulfillment, the job isn’t too far removed from when he worked the downtown beat for the Atlanta Police Department (APD). “I have an appreciation for both,” says Wooten. “In each profession, you’re helping people who rely on your expertise at that moment. The difference is that you’re on different ends of the spectrum. As a cop, typically I would help during an unsettling or chaotic moment in their lives. In my role at Capital Wealth Advisors, I’m helping them work toward their dreams. In either situation, to achieve a successful outcome, you have to begin by approaching it with a servant’s heart. That’s what I enjoy because that’s who I am.” Wooten was born in Atlanta but spent much of his childhood in Huntsville and Palestine, Texas. After high school he returned to Atlanta where he attended DeVry University, only to drop out just one semester shy of earning an electrical engineering degree. “Maybe it came from watching too much CHiPs as a kid, but I realized that being a cop was what I really wanted to do,” says Wooten. “I think my parents about had a heart attack when I told them I was leaving college.” But the next three years were everything that Wooten hoped they would be. “As a 20-year-old, it was so much fun being in downtown Atlanta,” he says. “It was like watching all those cop shows but actually living it five days a week.” In 2004 the APD loaned Wooten to the United States Secret Service for a two-week assignment to work the
G8 Summit in Savannah. The experience inspired him to pursue secret service work as the next step in his career. But that’s when real life intervened. He was in a long-distance relationship with his soon-to-be wife, Jennifer, who lived in Middle Tennessee and did not want to move to Atlanta. So Wooten relocated to Franklin on the condition that he would attend MTSU, earn his degree, then pursue secret service work. While in school, he worked night shift patrols for the Williamson County Sherriff’s Office. By 2008 the couple had two sons, Wooten had his degree in finance, and his dream of working for the secret service began to fade. “I found myself arguing with God and finally said, ‘Whatever you have planned has to be better than what I have planned for myself,’” says Wooten. “I felt as though the changes in my life were God’s way of continuing to lead me to help people, but to do it in a different way. And I’m glad I trusted Him because I really enjoy what I do.” At Capital, Wooten works with a wide range of clients from retirees to “High-Earners, Not-Rich-Yet” or HENRYs. “A lot of people think that because they’re high earners, they’ll always have a certain level of financial security, but that’s not necessarily the case,” says Wooten. “I help educate them about their options so that they can make the best decisions to meet life’s challenges while continuing to accumulate wealth. “Life creeps up on everyone and circumstances change,” he says. “What’s working for you now, might not work for you later. My job is to coach you so that you make the decisions that are best for you.” John Wooten should know. He’s experienced those changes himself. CapitalWealthAdvisor.com/ john-wooten

A Hometown Team Is Helping Homeowners’ Lawns Become The Envy Of The Neighborhood ARTICLE BY ED ATLAS | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

It may be the middle of winter but in Middle Tennessee that means springtime conditions are mere weeks away. And while the calendar indicates that winter soon will be loosening its grip, it also serves as a sobering reminder that yardwork is right around the corner as well. Of the many tasks on your outdoor to-do list, getting your lawn in top condition is probably near the top. When it comes roaring back to life, will it make your neighbors green with envy? Or will it be in “full bloom,” and the talk of the neighborhood for an entirely different reason? Franklin residents Dave Kmita and Todd Baker can answer those questions. Four years ago, they founded a new business together called LawnValue and they’ve been servicing homeowners’ lawns across Williamson County ever since. “Early February is the time for pre-emergent applications to prevent germination of those pesky spring and summer weeds,” says Kmita. “It’s also the time to get beds cleaned up with mulching. Then as soon as March comes, everyone wants landscaping. So if that’s something you want to do, this is also the time to start thinking and planning so you can get on the list early.”

Even if you’ve neglected your lawn for a year or more, this is the best time to start treatment as lawns, and unfortunately weeds, are just about to emerge from dormancy. “By starting now, and by keeping up with routine maintenance like treatments and mowing, your lawn will become noticeably healthier and able to withstand the summertime heat,” says Baker. “It will take a year of treatments to make a full recovery, but this is the best time to start attacking weeds at the source.” Still some homeowners are reluctant to retain the services of a lawn treatment company due to the chemical applications. Baker acknowledges those concerns but says there is no reason to worry. “It’s natural to have a lot of weeds in Tennessee, especially crabgrass and clover,” he says. “But chemical weed treatments have been thoroughly tested and approved for residential lawns. They’re safe to the touch and completely harmless when dry, which is mere minutes after application.” Kmita, 39, and Baker, 36, go back a long way. They both attended Tennessee Tech University where they earned degrees in mechanical engineering. Both are former athletes

as well, with Baker playing baseball at Tech and Kmita playing basketball at Page High School. Later they crossed paths professionally when they worked together for several years as engineering managers at Nissan. “We left the corporate world to do this,” says Kmita. “We chose to open LawnValue because we found an industry that needed help on the management side. That means running the business efficiently and with an emphasis on customer service.” LawnValue offers subscription services to keep your lawn looking its best throughout the year. A subscription service includes lawn treatments, irrigation maintenance, landscape trimming, bed weeding and mowing. Most of the visits are for mowing but you’ll see Lawn Value team members about 60-70 times annually. LawnValue’s line of services go far beyond the lawn. Landscaping comprises about 50 percent of the company’s business, hardscapes and covered additions account for another 30 percent with the balance covered by mowing and many other outdoor services. Specifically, LawnValue will tackle just about any outdoor project. Custom-designed landscaping, hardscapes
and outdoor living transformations are a specialty. If you need tree or shrub removal, or you’re in the market for a new fence or deck, installation of a driveway or patio, even an outdoor kitchen, LawnValue is a good place to call. Best of all, LawnValue is locally owned and operated, not a franchise. “Our goal is to be your source for everything outside the home,” says Kmita. “A great day is when we respond to a customer’s unique needs and our team is out in the field delivering.” And even though we’re still in the vice-grip of winter, there’s no better time than now to get started. A YOUNG WOMAN OVERCOMING ADVERSITY ONE CARD AT A TIME ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

“I hope my cards bring a little bit of happiness to each person that gets one,” says Janey Carter, founder of Paper by Janey. “I hope when people hear my story, I encourage them and show them that no matter what, anything is possible!” She definitely has proven that anything is indeed possible. In 2017, Janey was in a car accident that damaged her spinal cord, causing her to be partially paralyzed from the neck down. She was only 17 years old. Instead of sinking into despair, she found a way to bring joy not only to herself, but to others as well. “What I love most about making cards is the opportunity to create something meaningful that will bring a smile to someone’s face,” she says. It all started in 2020 when COVID shut down the world. Using watercolor paints, Janey decided to make Mother’s Day and other cards people could order online to spread some cheer. “I made little cards with bible verses on them and I sold more than I expected,” she says. “People were excited to have a card made by me. So next I made Father’s Day cards and birthday cards. Things continued to be successful so I just kept going.” Janey’s ideas are inspired from the world around her, and she also loves doing custom work to make other people’s ideas come to life on paper. In addition to cards, she makes invitations, announcements and anything else customers desire.

“What I love most about making cards is the opportunity to create something meaningful that will bring a smile to someone’s face.” Subscription Boxes - which arrive every January, April, July, and October - are another fun offering. “Each one contains 20 cards (a $60 value) for just $30 each time,” she says. “They’re a convenient way to keep a ready-to-use supply of cards on hand, making it easier to send cards whenever you need to.” There’s also a bonus surprise included in each package such as bookmarks, coupons for her website, tags for presents and very unique plantable cards. “A plantable card is a greeting card made from biodegradable paper embedded with seeds,” says Janey. “They can be planted instead of discarded. The paper decomposes and the seeds grow.” In addition to creating beautiful keepsakes, she also shares information and tips about living life with a spinal cord injury. “By sharing my own experiences, I aim to connect with others as they go through challenges as well,” she says. “Inspiring others to live their best lives despite challenges is important to me because I believe in the incredible strength that lies within each person.” This is her way, she explains, of bringing positivity to the world. “When people embrace their resilience, they not only improve their

own lives but also impact the lives of those they touch. Plus, seeing someone embrace their potential and find strength in adversity is incredibly fulfilling and, in turn, inspires me to continue supporting and uplifting others.” What makes her cards so special, she explains, is the story behind them. “With time, perseverance, and a shift in perspective, I discovered ways to adapt, discovered new passions, and found alternative ways to contribute and make a difference in the world. And I think that is what people appreciate the most.” While many of Janey’s cards can be found on her website, they’re also available in stores in over 18 states across the country, including Tennessee, New Jersey, Alabama, California, Texas and Wyoming. Madison Slandzicki has been bringing a little extra sweetness to Franklin ever since she opened her bakery, Kailey Cakes, in 2020. “My first name is actually Kailey,” explains owner and head baker/decorator Slandzicki. “I go by my middle name. It’s like a Southern thing. My name is Kailey Madison. When I was trying to come up with a business name I thought that Kailey Cakes just sounded super cute instead of Madison Cakes.” The bakery is hard to miss as the exterior is dotted with colorful sprinkles. “Everyone thought I was crazy when I first did it,” she says of the vibrant paint job. “Now everyone’s like ‘I’ve seen you, you’re the sprinkle house.’” Her passion for cakes began when she was young as she watched her neighbor across the street bake cakes for friends and family. She has fond memories of sneaking scraps of her homemade fondant when she’d go over for playdates with her neighbor’s daughter. “I loved all of her beautiful creations,” she recalls. “Just growing up watching her bake and decorate those cakes really was what made me love baking. I just really loved the decorating side. I guess at first that’s what I fell in love with and then after that I kind of switched. I went to culinary school and loved the baking side as well and the decorating. That’s kind of how it began.” After taking her general education courses at the University of Tennessee and graduating from The Art Institute of Nashville’s culinary program, she went down to St. Simons Island, Georgia to CONTINUED >

work at a café that specialized in all things olive oil. They didn’t offer any baked goods, so she began baking for them, making olive oil infused items. After a short stint at a bakery in Middle Tennessee, Slandzicki decided to take the leap and open her own. The building she had her eye on was previously owned by a catering company, so it was able to handle both catering and baking. She planned on including both elements into her business, but with the pandemic limiting many events, she invested her time and effort into the baking side. While both her parents and husband have full-time jobs, they have been an integral part of the operation since the beginning. No one in her family has culinary experience so the entire endeavor has been a learn-as-they-go process. She also has a current college student, Nicole, handling orders and overseeing logistics. What is unique about Kailey Cakes is that essentially everything is custom. Rather than having premade items on hand for purchase, everything typically must be ordered at least 48 hours in advance, so that they can create something unique and madeto-order for each customer. During the pandemic she developed her wedding cake tasting boxes allowing customers to select different types of cake with separate frosting and filling flavors on the side. This allows them to mix and match, down to what’s in between every individual layer, making each cake completely customized. When it comes to her favorite cake flavor, she immediately chooses the blackberry lavender cake. “I actually made my own wedding cake,” Slandzicki explains. “It was one of my wedding cake flavors. It’s just a fun, unique, different kind of flavor.” In addition to cakes, Kailey Cakes also offers a variety of sweet treats including mini and regular-sized pies, chocolate dipped goodies, brownies, sugar cookie bars, and more. “Pretty much whatever I’m feeling that day we’ve kind of just added and tweaked it and made it fun and put a spin on it with Kailey Cakes,” she shares. The Kailey Cakes team also offers decorating classes for both kids and adults, as well as parties and even science camps where they do experiments with baking. “All of my employees, aside from my family, are also teachers for the most part,” she explains. “They all work kind of as a teacher or like an assistant of some sort and then they come in and they help bake. There are a lot of teachers here so opening a party room was really fun and very important to us.”
88
LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | FO OD + BE VE RAGE
What’s even more meaningful is that one of the teachers she employs is the very same neighbor that inspired her love of baking when she was a young girl. “My main helper is Rachel,” says Slandzicki. “She actually was my across the street neighbor, which is super funny. She was the one I used to watch. It’s literally full circle. When she knew I was starting this, she started helping a little bit at first and now she’s in almost every other day. She’s a Pre-K teacher and then she comes in. She does a ton of the baking, and she helps with a lot of the decorating and little fondant work, especially since she’s just done that forever.” This story of childhood wonder turned career path couldn’t be any sweeter. WHAT WOMEN BINGE Melissa Joan Hart’s Celebrity Podcast Dishes On All The Things ARTICLE BY MARIA DINOIA | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Melissa Joan Hart, a name synonymous with ‘90s television and her portrayal of the iconic teenage witch Sabrina, catapulted to fame with the 19962003 Sabrina the Teenage Witch series, after her early success with Nickelodeon’s Clarissa Explains It All. While acting was her first inroad into Hollywood, it’s actually directing that has kept her busy these last few years. “I got my DGA {Directors Guild of America} card when I was about 21 or 22 years old. I just love it. I directed a bunch of Young Sheldon episodes and I’ve done The Goldbergs, ICarly, and a bunch of Christmas movies. I do a lot of the true crime Lifetime stuff too, and people are like, ‘Where have you been?’ The answer is ‘Behind the camera, a lot.’”

“I didn’t even really understand podcasts for a very long time. I loved Dax Shepard’s podcast and loved his format of just talking to celebrities and friends they had in their circle and just diving a little deeper.” Now she’s also behind the microphone. Launched in January of 2022, the popular “What Women Binge” podcast is Hart’s latest project. “I felt like when I would go on these talk shows, I would get about three and half minutes to dive into everything, and the first thing they wanted to know is something about my past, about Sabrina or Clarissa, and how I started in the business. Then they’d get into whatever we are there to promote. It felt like I was always rushed to get all this information out. It was always the same. I like the idea of sitting with someone and getting to know them better,” says Hart. And that’s exactly what she does with her co-host and friend, Amanda Lee and their celebrity guests. Guests have included Rita Moreno, Jason Priestley, Gary Sinise, Mario Lopez, Lacey Chabert, Kimberly

Williams-Paisley, and Hart’s former Sabrina co-star, Caroline Rhea, to name just a few. At almost 120 episodes under their belt, Hart says it was a lot of hard work in the beginning. “Doing research, getting the guests and then scheduling people. I’d love to have Barbara Eden on. My brain is always working to try and find guests, especially Nashville people who can come into our studio.” Hart relocated to Nashville about three years ago. “I’m from New York, lived in Los Angeles for 15 years, lived in Connecticut for 12, lived in Tahoe for two. I love moving around like that, but it’s really hard on the kids and the family. I am also very much like ‘I want a routine,’ even though my life’s not routine. I would have stayed in Connecticut for forever I think, if my husband hadn’t been so adamant about getting back to the South.” (Hart’s husband, Mark Wilkerson, is originally from Alabama and owns BFT Brentwood gym.) Hart continues, “I enjoy it here. It’s a great town. I have never seen so many concerts. In my entire life, I haven’t seen as many concerts as I’ve seen in the last year.” She adds, “When we first moved here, everyone was telling me we had to go to Puckett’s. We went one night and there was a band playing, and it was so great to see. I just loved that, and we loved going down to downtown Franklin. I love the restaurants around there too.” As we eagerly anticipate what’s next for Melissa Joan Hart, we’ll be listening. YouTube.com/@MelissaJoanHartOfficial @whatwomenbinge

THE LEGENDARY KIMBRO’S PICKIN’ PARLOR 100 LOCA L’S CH OICE | ENTERTAIN ME N T
From South Margin Street, you might just see someone pickin’ a guitar on a little old front porch on a little old house. But up those porch steps and through the front door, The Legendary
owner. The Kimbro’s brand expanded to include their next-door neighbor, Carpe Diem, Franklin’s first record store, and to the Factory at Franklin with the marvelous Mockingbird Theater.
“IT’S ABOUT WHAT’S GOOD FOR THE KIMBRO’S COMMUNITY AND THE FRANKLIN COMMUNITY.” Kimbro’s Pickin’ Parlor welcomes you in with music, fun, and a sense of home. Owner Will Jordan grew up and still resides in the heart of Franklin. “Franklin is my stomping grounds,” says Will. “I know every neighbor around Kimbro’s personally.” Ron Kimbro, songwriter and (still) longstanding bartender at Brown’s Diner in Nashville, opened the Franklin juke joint in 2005. A freelance writer and photographer, Will discovered Kimbro’s and was charmed by it. He asked Ron Kimbro for a job as a bartender there. As their friendship grew, Will became an owner in 2007, turning Kimbro’s into a full-time music venue, open seven nights a week. After a public retirement by Ron Kimbro on stage during a show by The SteelDrivers, Will became the sole
As you walk through the rooms at Kimbro’s, you’ll see that “the DNA is on the walls,” as Will puts it. Iconic musicians have performed at Kimbro’s including Leon Russell, Wynona Judd, Vince Gill, Emmylou Harris, and Rodney Crowell. Will remembers when Chris Stapleton, former member of The SteelDrivers, would eat meals in the back room before playing to his very first fans on the Kimbro’s stage. Legend even has it that, one night, a show featuring a band called the Coleslaw Brothers turned out to be a surprise John Prine concert of eight or nine of his original songs performed to a room of maybe fifteen people. You just never know who you might find there, and all you have to do is walk through the door. CONTINUED >

The city of Franklin is very important to Will Jordan, and he makes it a point to give back to the community. Kimbro’s offers the people of Franklin a place where they belong, featuring a fabulous menu, an extensive list of beers, wine, and spirits, and a back patio complete with tables, chairs, games and a firepit that makes for an ideal place for the whole family to hang out, enjoy some food, and listen to great music into the evening. You’ll find music for all ages including Ukulele Sprouts – a children’s ukulele class offered on Wednesdays. Kimbro’s works with charities like St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, with Friends of Franklin Parks on projects like the touching Ellie G’s Dream World, as well as with FrankTown Open Hearts, a nonprofit dedicated to improving the lives of Williamson County’s inner-city youth. “It’s more than just a business,” says Will. “It’s about what’s good for the Kimbro’s community and the Franklin community.” LegendaryKimbros.com

A Feeling of Belonging CONNECTING THROUGH STORYTELLING
While Jill Fordyce loves being a lawyer, she always wanted to write a novel one day. On January 30, that goal was realized when her book, Belonging, was released. WHAT DREW YOU TO WRITING? For me, story is the most powerful thing we have as far as understanding each other. To be able to create a story from things I've either observed or experienced and be able to put that out there just always felt really, really important to me. DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE OF WRITING. I feel like I learned more about writing from listening to music and lyrics than I did from studying literature. When I was first writing this book, I wanted it to feel the way a favorite old song makes you feel, and for it to feel universal so people could connect their own experiences to it. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO WRITE BELONGING? My original inspiration for the book was this idea of a childhood friendship that was so deep that it kind of guided each of the parties throughout their lives, across distance and time, and even death. And I wanted to tell that story from Jenny's [the protagonist] point of view because it was also important for me to write a book that

conveyed the experience of growing up in a home with an alcoholic mother in a very intimate and realistic way. Since I have experienced alcoholism in my own family, when I recognize a young girl who has those same types of traits as the character - being very independent but also needing a type of nurturing she maybe did not receive as a child - I wanted to be able to speak to her through story and character. HOW DO YOU WANT PEOPLE TO FEEL WHEN THEY READ BELONGING? My biggest hope is that they feel less alone by really being immersed in Jenny's life and finding her as somebody they can relate to. One of the themes of the book is forgiveness and this ability to forgive the alcoholic in your life and move forward with grace and peace in your own way. I hope that the book itself conveys a sense of warmth and hope. YOU LIVE IN CALIFORNIA BUT BOUGHT A HOME IN LEIPER’S FORK IN 2018. WHY WAS THAT? We just love it here - it’s so beautiful and peaceful. It also has accessibility to all the arts with the music and great literary communities nearby. I love the village and being close to downtown Franklin as well. It's such a friendly place. My next book, which I'm working on now, will actually take place in Middle Tennessee. You can find Belonging at Barnes & Noble and wherever books are sold. Jill will also be at Bound Booksellers in Franklin on February 10 from 1 to 2 p.m. BarnesAndNoble.com/w/belonging-jillfordyce/1143762745?ean=9798888451748

Beyond A Century Meet Franklin’s 102-year-old Resident, Maxine Eastland ARTICLE & PHOTOGRAPHY BY KAREN CREASON
108 I NSP IR E D BY | L I FE + C ULT U RE
Maxine with her daughter Gail
Born on November 6, 1921, in Starkville, Mississippi, Maxine Eastland entered a world that still echoed with the clip-clop of horsedrawn carriages. As she recently celebrated her 102nd birthday, few could have foreseen the incredible journey awaiting this spirited soul. Embracing a life marked by adaptability and adventure, Maxine, alongside her husband Edward, a bomber pilot in the Army Air Corps, navigated frequent deployments. Reflecting on their moves to Texas, Colorado, California, New York, Washington D.C., Alabama, Germany, and Japan, Maxine insists on the impossibility of choosing a favorite, asserting that, “Life was just an adventure to enjoy!” Two decades after Edward’s passing, Maxine found love once more, marrying professor David Eastland, who provided 19 years of shared companionship and joy. At 90 and widowed again, Maxine sought a new chapter in her life, moving to Brookdale Franklin to be closer to her daughter and granddaughter. Maxine’s life philosophy is as simple as it is profound: “Enjoy each day at a time—there’s something good in every day.” From her active childhood immersed in tennis, swimming, and Girl Scouts, to her current routine of exercise classes four times a week, Maxine still holds on to some old-school habits. She favors the company of books over the glow of television and engages fellow residents with her skilled bridge-playing abilities (which she pursued initially just for the refreshments!). Balancing a cherished past with an open embrace of the present, Maxine explains, “I don’t want to go back to the old days. I’m interested in what happens next.” Maxine’s life serves as an inspiration to embrace change, find joy in every day, and approach life with a positive outlook. In a world that keeps evolving, Maxine remains a beacon of joy, encouraging us to savor the good in every day.

ODDITY IMPROV BRINGS LAUGHTER AND CONFIDENCE TO FRANKLIN ARTICLE BY LISA VALENTINE PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
They say that laughter is the best medicine and with the heaviness of our current world, we could use more laughter in our lives. Husband and wife duo Chris Guerra and Kelsey Cooke are bringing a little bit of comic relief—as well as confidence and getting people outside of their shells—to Franklin through their nonprofit Oddity Improv. Like true Los Angeles natives, the couple—who in addition to improv have a history in film, TV, acting, and producing—met in acting school in L.A. After completing their education in New York City and kickstarting their careers, they returned to L.A. where they continued to develop their craft. Kelsey focused on becoming experienced in improv as she trained at notable places including Second City, while Chris worked as an artistic director at a famous Hollywood theater. During the pandemic, they decided they wanted a different environment for raising their two children and to bring their expertise to a new community and made the move to Middle Tennessee approximately two years ago. “We were primarily actors and directors,” says Guerra of their time in L.A. “And now that we’ve come out here, we are bringing our knowledge and skillset to help build something like that.” The couple recognized that there was a lot of talent in the area and wanted to connect with those interested in improv and create a hub for them. Their non-profit Oddity Improv offers both youth and adult classes, and shows for the community. “We wanted to meet other comedy people, that’s why we started Oddity Improv,” says Guerra. “Especially as a non-profit because we just think improv is such a powerful tool for building people’s confidence.

It’s something I wish I had when I was a lot younger just to get out of my skin. It [even] helps with board meetings and work.” They have seen the power of improv in their own family as it has helped their nine-yearold daughter with handling her anxiety and building confidence. They’ve even shared the story of a student who almost left Nashville because they weren’t finding connection, found the sense of community they were seeking through the improv class and remained in the area. “We want to create a place where families can watch comedy together,” says Guerra of what they call their “cleanish comedy” with subject matter entertaining to preteens, teenagers, and adults. “Because you can’t ever really predict what is going to come out of your mouth,” says Cooke with a laugh.

Every Monday evening, audiences can attend the 90-minute, Whose Line Is It Anyway? inspired shows, which feature a different guest star each week. They want to make improv classes accessible for everyone by offering one-day classes for those who would like to give improv a try. From there they have different paths and intensives for people who want to pursue it professionally, or multi-week classes for those passionate about just doing it for fun. Classes are currently available at a few different studio locations in the area, but the non-profit will be making its permanent home for both classes and shows later in 2024 at The Factory. In addition to classes, they also partner with schools, do corporate training, and even come to holiday parties. “Just have fun and be silly; Be a little odd,” says Guerra about both the organization’s name and mindset. “We really love what we do. We see it—it sounds cheesy—really changing people’s lives. We see people getting out of their shells. It’s okay to be a little weird, it’s okay to be silly, and we’re fostering that.” OddityImprov.com Instagram @OddityImprov

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BOTOX AND FILLER? Botox and fillers are both popular treatments that help reduce the signs of aging, but they work in different ways and are used to treat different areas of the face. Botox is a muscle relaxant that is used to treat wrinkles and fine lines in the face. It works by blocking the signals from the nerves to the muscles, which causes the muscles to relax. This can help reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, particularly in areas such as the forehead, crow’s feet, and frown lines between the eyebrows. Botox is a temporary treatment that typically lasts for around 3 months.

Fillers, on the other hand, are used to add volume to areas that have lost fullness due to aging. They are typically made from hyaluronic acid, which is a substance that occurs naturally in the body. Fillers can be used to add volume to areas such as the cheeks, lips, and under-eye area. They can also be used to fill in wrinkles and fine lines, particularly around the mouth and nose. Fillers are great for lifting the face as it begins to descend with aging. Fillers will last up to 2 years. Overall, Botox and fillers are both effective treatments that can help reduce the signs of aging. However, they work in different ways and are used to treat different areas of the face.

When my kids were little, we would address valentines to classmates, deliver flowers to neighbors and decorate the house with hearts and snowflakes (cut from white coffee filters). For dinner, I would make their favorite meal: dessert! Why not? I'd melt chocolate (the good stuff) and let them line up their dippers. They thought dessert for dinner was magical. Of course, I'd fed them a protein-packed after-school snack and served "dinner" early so they could get their sugar wiggles out before bed. Delightful! Happy Valentine's Day!

1/2 cup milk 1 cup heavy cream 1/4 cup whole coffee beans 2 ounces semisweet chocolate (61% Valrhona), chopped • 2 tablespoons Kahlua • 1 teaspoon confectioner's sugar • 1 tablespoon dark chocolatecovered coffee beans, chopped
In a saucepan over medium heat, combine milk, 1/2 cup cream, and whole coffee beans. Bring to a simmer, turn off heat, cover, and steep beans for 1 hour. Strain liquid and return to saucepan; discard beans. Bring the milk-and-cream mixture back to a simmer, add chocolate, and whisk until incorporated. Remove from heat; whisk in Kahlua. Whip remaining 1/2 cup cream and the confectioners' sugar until soft peaks form. Divide the hot chocolate between 2 cups and garnish each portion with a dollop of whipped cream and a sprinkling of chopped chocolate-covered coffee beans.

Reservations For Two Dreamy destinations for couples looking to get away.
Finding a life partner just might be easier than finding someone you can travel with. Pace, patience and priorities all matter when organizing itineraries, straddling time zones and navigating new places. Do you like languid mornings with room service, wide sandy beaches and white-glove service? Or, do you prefer watching the sunrise in hiking boots, launching into eye-opening excursions and digging to find that hidden gem of a restaurant that serves local food to locals? When the stars align, both partners have an affinity for generally the same kind of vacation, or are willing to compromise. Enjoying travel with your mate is the icing on the (wedding) cake. Here are a few ideas for fabulously romantic getaways. Bon Voyage!
Traveling can be as stressful as it is sublime. Exhausting as it is inspiring. Traveling as a couple requires additional planning and communication with a healthy dose of patience. Much like marriage! But, waking up in a faraway place, exploring unknown terrain together and leaving your routine and all its trappings behind can be therapeutic. You both can take on new roles and release tired habits.
1
Write new vows over lunch or take a random nap because you can.
2
Share planning and talk about your goals for the trip. Do you want to completely unplug or will one of you need excellent wifi to call into a few meetings?
3
If you’re parents, consider setting boundaries for texting and phone calls so you can put the phone away and immerse in one another. Let the kids know you will be checking your phone at a certain time each day (and stick to that). Let the grandparents or caregivers handle the day to day drama.

Take turns charting a course for the day. On day one, you check museum opening times, get the timed tickets and find a nearby spot for a healthy lunch. On day two, you sit back and let your partner call the Uber and source out the perfect shopping district, walking distance to a park. Enjoy the ride, either way.

Four Seasons Bora Bora FourSeasons.com/BoraBora
Privacy and so much blue water. Bora Bora, French Polynesia At the Four Seasons Bora Bora, bucket list overwater bungalows line a glassy lagoon, inviting early-morning swims off your own private dock with a bright breakfast table set on your patio overlooking Mount Otemanu. The morning air is like silk, with a lithe breeze promising more of the same. Later, meander down the shady paths of the resort to the Te Mahana Spa. With breathtaking lagoon and Pacific Ocean views from twin infinity pools, the treatment begins with local juices and fruit, a foot massage, and then continues with rebalancing rituals starring indigenous ingredients like skin-smoothing, Tahitian-black-pearl powder and detoxifying algae sourced from the ocean. A full body scrub, massage, and hour-long soak in a coconut bath will leave you thankful and grounded. You can connect with the underwater world by snorkeling with a resident marine biologist and leave a legacy by grafting coral to repopulate the sun bleached lagoon. Dinners at the Four Seasons Bora Bora offer the ultimate date night experience, and a private moonlit swim is the perfect nightcap.
