5 THINGS TO TAKE CARE OF BEFORE YOUR KIDS GO OFF TO COLLEGE.

1. Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care

Every year, roughly a quarter of a million young adults between the ages of 18-25 wind up in the hospital. From alcohol poisoning and nonlethal accidents to unexpected illnesses, it’s important to remind your clients to hope for the best but prepare for the worst. Once a child reaches the age of 18, a parent’s decisionmaking role is significantly diminished, especially in regard to making healthcare decisions.

Should their child get in a car accident, or fall ill and not be capable of making their own medical decisions, then without a durable power of attorney naming the parents as health care agents for the child, the parents cannot make medical decisions on their child’s behalf. If your clients want to ensure that they can continue to make healthcare decisions for their child, working with their child to create a healthcare power of attorney should be at the top of their to-do list.

2. HIPAA Authorization

In order to make informed medical decisions, it’s important to include a HIPAA authorization form along with a health care power of attorney. Without it, parents would be unable to communicate with healthcare professionals and insurance companies, as well as access their child’s health records and previous treatment information.

3. Durable Power of Attorney (Finances and Property)

Similar to a health care power of attorney, a financial power of attorney gives parents the ability to make financial decisions on their child’s behalf, should they be unable to do so themselves. Should the child become disabled for any reason, then your clients would still be able to pay their child’s rent, credit card bills, utilities, access bank accounts and financial records, as well as manage any loans they may have.

4. FERPA Release

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act is designed to protect a college student’s privacy, but it can also leave parents locked out in an emergency. A properly worded release can allow parents to talk to school officials and release pertinent educational records and information should they need it.

5. Last Will and Testament

While many parents don’t want to think about this topic, especially as their child leaves home, it’s an important one to add to the list. A will allows parents to honor their child’s wishes on what should be done with their social media accounts, bank accounts, and personal assets. It also allows the child to specify any funeral arrangements they would like to have.

Sweet Summertime

Welcome to our summer fun issue! As the temperature rises and the sun shines brighter, we couldn't be more excited to share some ideas to help make this summer an unforgettable one.

In this issue, we talk with Nashville resident Sheryl Crow about her recent nomination into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as well as her remarkable and enduring career.

We've scoured Williamson County for ideas on things to do  - take a ride on the Franklin trolley, spend a day at Southall Meadows, or pick an outdoor activity from Visit Franklin's outdoor guide.

If travel is more your speed, take a road trip to Historic Banning Mills in Georgia. That place will get your adrenaline pumping while soaring through the skies on a zip line! Or you can ride the waves on a surfboard while looking for your second home at the Abaco Club in the Bahamas.

In addition to our travel features, we explore summer trends including mouthwatering and refreshing recipes for outdoor gatherings, family-friendly activities to keep everyone entertained during the summer break, and how to enjoy it all bug-free!

So grab your sunscreen, flip-flops, and a cool drink, and dive into the pages of this issue. Here's to a summer filled with laughter, adventure, and endless sunshine!

Warmly,

July 2023

DO YOU HATE YOUR CPAP? YOU ARE NOT ALONE.

Sleep apnea is a common sleep disorder affecting close to 30 million people in the US. It is characterized by interruptions in breathing during sleep, leading to fragmented and poor-quality sleep. Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy has long been considered the gold standard treatment for sleep apnea.

While CPAP has proven effective for many individuals, some people simply cannot tolerate the masks and hoses required. If you or a loved one have sleep apnea and find yourself hating your CPAP, don’t despair. There are alternative treatments that can help you manage your condition and achieve a restful night’s sleep. Oral appliances, also known as mandibular advancement devices or oral splints, are an effective alternative for mild to moderate sleep apnea. These custom-fit devices are worn in the mouth during sleep and work by repositioning the jaw and tongue to keep the airway open. Oral appliances are comfortable, portable, and easy to use, making them a popular choice for those who dislike CPAP machines. However, it’s important to consult with a sleep specialist or dentist experienced in sleep apnea treatment to ensure proper custom fitting and effectiveness. In addition to medical interventions, certain lifestyle modifications can greatly improve sleep apnea symptoms.

Maintaining a healthy weight can help because excess weight can worsen sleep apnea. Alcohol and sedatives can relax the throat muscles, leading to increased breathing difficulties during sleep. Minimizing or avoiding these substances can improve sleep quality. Sleeping on your side instead of your back can help prevent the collapse of the airway and minimize sleep apnea events. Try using pillows or positional devices to encourage side sleeping. NightLase non-surgical therapy treats the soft tissue of the back of the throat and under the tongue to stimulate the tightening of the collagen fibers and lessen the collapsibility of these structures. This treatment can be used alone or in combination with other strategies for better and more quiet sleep for you and your bed partner. Maxillary expansion protocols in adult patients can also be helpful in those patients diagnosed with mild or moderate sleep apnea. The use of these removable expanders and aligners based on a specific technique can not only improve breathing during sleep but can also enhance nasal breathing during the day. And nasal breathing is essential for overall health. Myofunctional therapy is therapy for the muscles of breathing, chewing and swallowing. Because of our early soft diet, many of us, unknowingly, have weak tongue muscles. This impacts proper nasal breathing. This special physical therapy for the tongue strengthens proper tongue position and teaches better breathing habits. In cases where other treatment options have been exhausted or are ineffective, surgical intervention may be considered. Procedures such as Inspire electrode implant therapy, double jaw advancement surgery (MMA), or tongue surgical advancement can be performed to alleviate obstructions in the airway and improve breathing during sleep. Surgical options are typically reserved for severe cases or when all else fails. So, look to your specially trained Airway Dentist to review all of your options, and help you find the right treatment for your snoring or sleep apnea. Visit www.kellyerice.com for more information about NightLase treatment, Myofunctional therapy and Adult expansion therapy.

GUIDING YOU HOME

IT’S BETTER IN THE BAHAMAS

Williamson County residents have an affinity for second homes. The affluent county is home to many individuals who seek to invest in vacation properties and second homes. And the allure of owning a beachfront or beach-access property has proven irresistible to many who value a coastal lifestyle. While some Williamson County residents opt for destinations closer to home, such as the 30A area of Florida, others are venturing farther afield to find their perfect getaway. Specifically, they’re venturing to the Abaco Club on Winding Bay in the Bahamas.

Tucked between gently swaying palms and azure waters on Great Abaco Island, Abaco Club by Southworth Development is an extraordinary private paradise. In this soul-enriching, 500-acre sanctuary of astounding natural beauty, families unwind in organic luxury at island-inspired

homes, golfers swing away on the number one course in The Bahamas, anglers pursue trophy bonefish and deepsea marlin in world-renowned waters, members gather for sociable fun and imaginative cuisine, and people of all ages relax and play on powder-soft, white sands along one of the most beautiful beaches on Earth.

Sound heavenly? Brentwood residents Stacy and Jeff Rothenberger couldn’t be more thrilled with their decision to purchase at Abaco Club. Jeff says, “For us, it checked all the boxes. I’m a golfer, Stacy’s a tennis player. It’s very social. We feel a part of something special here.”

The couple previously owned a second home in San Destin since 1998. They sold that home in October of 2020 and haven’t looked back. Stacy says, “We like the fact it’s not crowded like San Destin. It’s the culture here more than

anything else. The Club treats us so special. And the people here are just so nice.”

One can get to Abaco Club in under three hours. It’s an easy 2-hour flight from Nashville to Marsh Harbour, and a 25-minute car ride from the airport once landed.

Members, such as the Rothenbergers, not only enjoy the perennially ranked golf course, but an array of water sports, from kayaking, sailing, paddleboarding and snorkeling to spear-fishing, deep sea fishing and marine conservation. With a spa, tennis courts, pickleball courts, a fitness center, and a yoga “dock” that overlooks the Atlantic Ocean, Abaco Club has everything. Restaurants on-site (including a taco food truck), a marina with a boat that takes guests to other islands, and an extremely helpful and accommodating staff round out the list of spectacular amenities.

There are a wide variety of private residential options—each one a comfortable, luxurious haven that’s a true reflection of its Caribbean surroundings.

CABANA SUITES

Situated adjacent to the beach and in the heart of everything, these delightful, affordable one-bedroom residences are a low-maintenance alternative to an expansive Bahamas beach house. The freestanding, fully-furnished Cabanas are ideal for a weeklong stay, or as a guest house for Cottage or Estate owners who’d like to host visiting family or friends in a convenient luxury home. Prices start at $1.5 million.

THE RIDGE COTTAGES

Inspired by traditional Bahamian architecture, these turnkey Caribbean residences offer the privacy and flexibility of a single-family island home. The spacious three- to five-bedroom homes are perfect for entertaining family and friends—with panoramic views on both sides. To the east are dramatic vistas of the 18th hole and the deep-blue Atlantic Ocean just beyond. To the west, soak up unobstructed views of stunning sunsets and the sparkling, turquoise waters of Winding Bay. Given the collection’s prime location, club amenities are a short walk away, including the Fitness Center & Spa, The Cliff House restaurant, and Tip-Top sunset deck, pool and bar. Prices start at $2.75 million.

THE CAYS

A true expression of thoughtfully designed beachfront living, The Cays is an exceptional limited collection of 36 private beachfront villa residences inspired by the wonder of Abaco and authentic Bahamian architecture. Combining early 20th-century Caribbean glamour with native island textures in sand, stone, and wood, each of the homes is carefully crafted to create an intimate connection to the beach through open spaces, floor-to-ceiling glass, wraparound terraces, and an artful merging of indoors and out. From inviting studios to grand 5,400-square-foot, seven-bedroom homes, the residences offer uninterrupted views of Winding Bay and Sugar Cay. Prices for Villas start at $3.35 million, for Beach Flats at $5.175 million and for Sky Flats at $5.31 million.

BANNING MILLS: WHERE HISTORY AND ADVENTURE MEET

READY, SET, ADVENTURE!

Located an hour west of Atlanta and a four-and-a-half-hour drive from Franklin, tucked away in the serene natural beauty of Whitesburg, Georgia is Historic Banning Mills. Owners Donna and Mike Holder set out to create a bed and breakfast when they bought the property in 1997 after finding a one-time “land for sale” ad in the Atlanta JournalConstitution. The property had been neglected for over 20 years and the grounds were severely overgrown, but they decided to take a chance. What they discovered along Snake Creek Gorge was a lesson about Georgia’s industrial era that dated back to the 1800s.

Along the tributary of the Chattahoochee River, mills harnessed the creek’s power and the men who owned these mills made a fortune. As sort of an ode to Georgia’s early history, the Holder’s Bed and Breakfast grew to become a non-profit conservation center, country retreat and adventure center. So Banning Mills was born.

Banning Mills holds the Guinness world record for the longest zip line canopy tour and tallest free-standing rock wall in the world. The endless adventure options include zip lining, aerial adventures, kayaking, Eco-Spider ATV tours, hiking trails with suspension bridges, horseback riding, summer camps, team building, meeting spaces, birds of prey nature show, and special events. Pool, volleyball, tennis and miniature golf are available seasonally.

Historic Banning Mills is family-owned and run with a mission to preserve the unique and pristine ecosystems of the Snake Creek Gorge and Chattahoochee watershed areas, as well as the extensive history of the Banning Mills township and gorge areas.

Having A Hale Of A Time

A SINGER WHO’S COOKING UP MORE THAN MUSIC

Originally from a little town in Arkansas, Rachel Hale moved to Nashville to attend Belmont University. In 2013, during her senior year of college, she auditioned for “American Idol” season 12. “Because of online auditions, nearly half a million people auditioned, and it was at that time the most people that had ever auditioned for a season,” she says. “It really was a miracle if you made it on the show.”

Rachel not only made the cut, but she also ended up being one of the top 20 female finalists. One of the most memorable moments would be her very first audition before the judges, who at that time were Randy Jackson, Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj and Keith Urban. “Before that audition, I prayed that God’s joy would be in the room, and during that audition, that’s what they talked about,” she says. “They said the moment I walked in, they felt so much joy.”

“When you face an obstacle, instead of knocking on other people’s doors for help, figure out how to build your own door. That door is actually going to be your platform.”
55 | CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/FRANKLIN JULY 2023

During the show, Billboard Magazine ranked her performance of Grace Potter’s “Nothing But The Water” as one of the top moments of the season. It was a dream come true and opened many doors on her journey to musical success.

Since then, Rachel has shared the stage with Peter Frampton and Ricky Skaggs, and opened for stars including Tracy Byrd, Joe Nichols, Joe Diffie and Chris Cagle. In 2022, she released her single, “A Man,” and has more new music coming out soon.

In addition to singing and writing songs, she’s also a great cook, and turned her love of healthy food into a series on Instagram. “I took a break from music for a bit and went to California to finish school,” she says. “I graduated during the pandemic, and was missing music every day. We had mandatory stay-at-home orders and everybody was just depressed. I’d been eating a paleo diet pretty consistently for about three years and my friends were always asking for recipes. Since my last name is Hale, I started a cooking show called “Hale’s Kitchen,” a spin on Gordon Ramsay’s “Hell’s Kitchen.”

In the series, Rachel teams up with paleo companies and has celebrity guests join in the fun. “It’s just one of those planes that I’m building in the air,” she says. “I really love it and I’m grateful for it.”

She truly believes in giving thanks. “When you’re thankful, you see just how much you have and how blessed you are. You feel empowered to actually change the situation around you. When you face an obstacle, instead of knocking on other people’s doors for help, figure out how to build your own door. That door is actually going to be your platform.”

Rachel’s also paired with Katie Dixon, a finalist on Master Chef and Food Network Star, for a show called “Bibles and Biscuits” on Instagram Live, and she was just booked for a live taping of the “Huckabee Show” in Hendersonville on August 30.

All The Right Moves

Making An Impact On And Off The Mat

For Sean Gann, being a 6th-degree black belt means a lot more than being a martial arts expert. “For me, martial arts isn’t something I do, it’s who I am,” he says. “Being a black belt is more than just wearing a piece of fabric around your waist. It’s about your mental state, your emotional state, and how you treat and help other people.” He certainly had others in the martial arts community help him. “My parents split up when I was 13, and my instructor, Senior Master Michael Holt at Tiger-Rock Martial

Arts [in Northport, Alabama], ended up being sort of a father figure to me. To this day, he’s someone I can call if I need someone to talk to.”

After leaving a career in public school teaching in his 30s and being away from martial arts for many years, Master Holt and the team at Tiger-Rock came to his aid once again. “I ran into Master Holt at the gym,” says Sean. “I wanted to get back into martial arts, but at that time, I was over 400 pounds. He said it wouldn’t be safe for me to stand on one leg and kick, so he

Sean

made a deal with me that if I lost 100 pounds, he’d love to have me come and take classes again.”

Using the discipline and perseverance he learned through martial arts, Sean lost 100 pounds, and went on to lose another 160 pounds. After earning his Senior 4th Degree black belt in 2017, he spent four years as academy manager for Master Holt. Today he’s a 6th-degree black belt and certified instructor, and since September 2020, has owned his own Tiger-Rock Martial Arts academy in Franklin.

“My wife Alisa and I looked at a bunch of places for our academy and narrowed it down to either Franklin or Blue Springs, Missouri,” he says. “We looked at the pros and cons of each area and had some prayer involved too. We ended up settling on Franklin because it felt like it was the place for us to be.”

After living here for the last few years, he knows they made the right choice. “We have so many wonderful students and wonderful families. Some of them are now leadership and instructors themselves. We’ve built that whole sense of community and a spirit of helping others.”

Sean turned 37 this year, and he says one of the biggest things to come from his martial arts journey was a sense of confidence in his abilities to do what needs to be done.

“I’ve had times in my martial arts career where things didn’t go the way I wanted. Or things weren’t progressing as fast as I wanted. But I’ve learned that by sticking with it, I’d get there eventually.”

Tiger-Rock Martial Arts, which combines tae kwondo and Korean martial arts traditions with the latest advances in physical fitness, welcomes people of all ages and abilities.

“No one is going to be perfect in their first class or even in their second class,” he says. “You just have to keep striving to get better.”

Adds Sean, “We’ve been able to make an impact in the community.

I’m not just trying to promote business. I wanted to have my own martial arts school because I want to teach martial arts, but also because I want to be able to inspire others with my story and with my actions.”

He wants to be what Master Holt was to him - a person others can turn to if and when they need help.

HORSING AROUND

As the head of Fort Lauderdale-based Triton Insurance Group, B.J. Michaud wasn’t thinking about moving from Southeast Florida to Middle Tennessee. But that changed after an unrelated visit to the area.

HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE HAVE RELOCATED TO NASHVILLE IN THE LAST DECADE OR SO, BUT YOUR MOVE HERE WASN’T SO TYPICAL. HOW DID YOU LAND IN WILLIAMSON COUNTY?

B.J. Michaud: About three years ago my wife, Kimberly, and I retired a horse that we owned to Glasgow, Kentucky. We visited Nashville and, while we were downtown at The Diner, our waiter told us to check out Franklin. We did and said, ‘We’re done!’ It reminded me of Bucks County, Pennsylvania where I spent the first 38 years of my life. It was like home but without six months of winter.

TRITON INSURANCE IS IN THE BUSINESS OF RISK MANAGEMENT. BUT WASN’T IT RISKY OPENING A BRANCH WHERE YOU HAD FEW CONNECTIONS?

BJ: Triton has eight offices in Florida and now we have this one in Tennessee. My business partner, Mike Zubero, and I are

also looking at neighboring states. Our national carrier partners do not write property in Florida, so moving here has helped facilitate Triton’s growth. We’re a leading provider of home, auto, and business insurance and we represent close to 50 carriers, from many of the large national brands to regional companies. But insurance is a relationship business. Triton was built on the sidelines of athletic fields and in car lines at schools. Our office is in Leipers Fork across from Fox & Locke in the United Country Real Estate building. We work for our friends and neighbors; we are not captive to one carrier and we are continually hunting for the best coverage options for our clients.

YOU’VE ALREADY MENTIONED HORSES AND TRITON ALSO SPECIALIZES IN EQUINE INSURANCE. COINCIDENCE?

BJ: Not at all. We own quarter horses and, growing up in Bucks County, horses were always part of life. Just as they are in Florida and Tennessee. I’ve never been a dedicated rider; all I do is hold on. Kimberly, on the other hand, was a barrel racer as a child and has always been a rider. Equine insurance is not just for valuable show or racehorses. Liability insurance is necessary forboarding or for whenever anyone is on your property. And vet bills, especially for illness or surgery, can be staggering. We know this from personal experience.

ON

A PERSONAL NOTE,

HOW HAS THE MOVE HERE BEEN FOR THE MICHAUD FAMILY?

BJ: I always had eyes on getting back to that style of rural living where neighbors helped their neighbors, and this community has turned out to be even greater than it was in my mind. We moved our horses into the barn last June and we moved into our house three days before Thanksgiving. From where we live it’s about 15 minutes from our office in Leiper’s Fork or into town. Being here has exceeded our expectations. We are home. TritonAgency.com

Music City’s Hyperlocal Weather Team

How

Will Minkoff
“Dudes With Laptops” Became Nashville’s Go-To Source For Breaking Weather News 68

Weather is obvious. It’s difficult to go through a typical day without checking the forecast or talking about it with those you meet.

But to some people, weather is more than a point of discussion. To them, every day is as serious as a category-five hurricane, no matter how uneventful the actual conditions may be.

This applies to David Drobny, Will Minkoff and Andrew Leeper, three self-described “weather nerds” who form the team at Nashville Severe Weather. Founded by Drobny in 2010, Minkoff joined a year later with Leeper rounding out the lineup in 2015.Together they provide their 279,000 Twitter followers @NashSevereWx with weather information specific to Davidson and Williamson Counties. Leeper heads the video component on YouTube @NashSevereWx. But their wheelhouse is delivering up-to-themoment details during breaking and ongoing severe weather events.

“The biggest differentiator between what we want to do and what was and is happening in weather media is the ability to be hyperlocal,” says Minkoff, who resides near Warner Parks in Northern Williamson County. “We only cover two counties while the (network affiliates) cover 36. There’s no way they can dive into the minutia of a single storm cell in Western Davidson if they’re also tracking storms in Cumberland and Macon and Hickman.”

The team at Nashville Severe Weather is transparent about the fact that they are not meteorologists. However, they utilize the same technology and data provided by the National Weather Service (NWS) and apply it

to two specific locations as opposed to the entire Middle Tennessee region.

Nashville Severe Weather began as Drobny’s solo project, shortly after he acquired some high-end radar software. There was no website, only a Twitter account. At about the same time, Minkoff was utilizing social media to disseminate storm damage reports that he curated from multiple sources. After about a year, they met for lunch and decided to join forces. At the time they had a whopping 1,500 followers. “We were just two dudes with laptops and an interest in weather,” says Minkoff.

Due in part to their location in a region that experiences all four seasons, an abundance of severe weather, and their good-natured, often humorous presentations, their following began to grow. “We wanted to convey uncertainties that many other outlets are unwilling to convey,” says Minkoff. “If we don’t know what’s going to happen, we say so. We don’t make deterministic forecasts so we can say you can trust us. But we’ve earned that trust for being right. We don’t want this to be stodgy or alarmist either. And we want to have fun because, most of the time, weather is boring. But our tone and words change when there’s a severe weather threat. We know when it’s game time and our tone reflects that.”

In the early going, Nashville Severe Weather was lumped into a rather large group of social media sources that were not looked upon fondly by the greater weather community. But that changed on July 7, 2011. A torrential downpour developed over Cool Springs, dropped four inches of rain in two hours and

flooded the parking lot at the CoolSprings Galleria. The severity of the event went unreported by the legacy outlets until @NashSevereWx broke the news. That prompted a meeting with NWS-Nashville that resulted in Nashville Severe Weather earning a seat at the table alongside the local mainstream media outlets.

Since then, Nashville Severe Weather has earned a stellar reputation within the weather community at large, even winning the National Weather Association’s Walter J. Bennett Public Service Award in 2016. “We showed (the NWS) that we were in this to take the best information we could gather and

provide it to them with an open hand,” says Minkoff. “We don’t exist to sell ads or sensationalize content.”

At its core, Nashville Severe Weather is a public service. Team members invest in expensive equipment but they are not compensated. In addition to the radar system, they deploy high-flying drones and weather balloons. Generators keep them “on air” when the power goes out. All these gadgets and gear do not come cheaply but nearly 1,000 patrons help defray the costs. Additional information, including a donor portal, is available online at NashvilleSevereWeather.com

Turning The Cornerstone

LUXURY HOMEBUILDER

ZACH GOODGAME’S LIFE AND CAREER ARE GROUNDED IN EMBRACING WHAT COMES NEXT

When Zach Goodgame found out at the age of 17 that he was about to become a father, he didn’t run and hide. Instead, he embraced the unexpected news as the start of an exciting chapter in his life; a chapter in which he could determine the outcome.

“My plans shifted from going to college and pursuing those dreams, to making a living and supporting my family,” he says. So far, so good.

Today, at the age of 31, he’s now the father of three boys and the owner of Cornerstone Construction, one of the best-known builders of luxury homes in Middle Tennessee. While his priorities changed, his ambition to work hard, coupled with his desire to be the best, did not. For Zach, that meant going to work

in the family concrete business. From there he went to work for a custom homebuilder before stepping out on his own and forming Cornerstone in 2015.

“Cornerstone started small,” he says. “We did remodels, built spec homes in Spring Hill, then custom homes. Then when the timing was right, we entered the high-end custom homebuilding market in Williamson County.”

Cornerstone Construction is not the biggest nor least expensive player in the market. But the company fashions itself on providing the very best quality and service. For Goodgame, that’s important in a business where clients and customers talk to each other about a builder’s craftsmanship and trustworthiness.

“We see it through blue collar eyes,” he says. “We pour the concrete and drive the nails. But we listen to our customers so that we deliver exactly what they want and that it will last a very long time.”

“To me, it’s about problem solving. I want to take my customer’s vision and make it a reality. Challenges present themselves every day; there are things that can really surprise you, but I figure out a way to make it happen. I love that part of the job.”

While new construction is here for the foreseeable future, late last year Cornerstone introduced a remodel division that, in a sense, brings the company full circle. But the

evolution is natural and driven by the demands of the marketplace. “Williamson County has grown substantially, but there are a lot of people who have owned homes here for a very long time that cannot afford or justify the expense of building a brand new $4 million house,” says Goodgame. “But they still want to live in an updated home, so remodeling has become a renewed point of emphasis.”

Goodgame, along with lead project manager Allen Bledsoe and project manager Zenon Horb, approach remodels with the same custom-build ideas as they bring to new construction. “We are not a cookie cutter operation; we strive to be very creative and to come up with new ideas,” says Goodgame. “Our aim is to capture the remodel market by providing the same great service and quality as we do to the new construction side. We like taking the old bones and turning them into a vibrant, new living space.” C3ofTN.com

THE

evolution sheryl crow OF

Sheryl Crow, a name synonymous with ageless music and incredible talent, has etched her mark in the annals of rock, pop, and folk music. With her distinctive voice and melodies, along with her introspective songwriting, Crow has captivated audiences worldwide for over three decades. Rising to fame in the 1990s with her debut album, “Tuesday Night Music Club,” she quickly became a prominent figure in the music industry, garnering not only critical acclaim but multiple Grammy Awards, including 1994’s Best New Artist and Record of the Year. Throughout her career, Crow has continued to evolve as an artist, leaving an indelible impact on the music landscape. Later this year, Crow will be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, an honor reserved for  “ artists who, in their careers, have created music whose originality, impact, and influence has changed the course of rock & roll.”

TELL ME ABOUT THE ROCK & ROLL HALL OF FAME INDUCTION ANNOUNCEMENT. WHERE WERE YOU WHEN YOU HEARD, AND WHAT DOES BEING INDUCTED MEAN TO YOU?

Sheryl Crow : My manager called me and said that I was being inducted, and then suddenly I started getting texts from, oh my goodness, people from

all over, people I haven’t heard from for years, and I have to say it was an extremely sweet experience. I’ve said on numerous occasions that I feel like I’m being presented with an Oscar for a movie that I haven’t completely finished writing. So it’s very humbling and also super exciting. I feel like all the people that I’ve loved and who have inspired me to do what I’m doing are in the Rock Hall, so it’s such a huge honor to be even in the list of names.

WHEN YOUR CAREER TOOK OFF AFTER “ALL I WANNA DO,” DID YOU EXPECT IT TO LAST 25+ YEARS OR DID YOU EVER EVEN REALLY THINK THAT FAR AHEAD?

SC: I never thought that far ahead. The thing that happens is that when you have songs that make it onto the radio, the next time you go into the studio you feel this pressure to try not to, but at the same time, be aware of calculating what might get on the radio or what might sound good on the radio, and it can be really overwhelming and really daunting. But I’ve been really lucky. I’ve loved being in the studio. Part of what I love about it is I feel like I get to be a better producer every time I go in and I love songwriting and I still feel like my best work is ahead of me and so that’s always kept me going. I feel like there’s always so much to write about and right now it’s an

amazingly inspiring time to be a songwriter. It’s obviously different because I’m older so I can’t ever count on radio necessarily being interested in what I’m writing, but there are so many other avenues for music to get heard. So that’s what really keeps me going is that I love the craft and I love going into the studio and coming out with something that’s never been before, a song that’s never been written. So 25 years seems like a long time, but it really has been a fun journey.

WHAT WAS THE EXPERIENCE LIKE OF MAKING THE DOCUMENTARY, SHERYL

?

SC: Making the documentary for me was arduous. It was in the middle of Covid, and I don’t know that anybody ever sits down and thinks this is going to be really fun to talk about 30, 40 years of memories and to dig through the really hard stuff. So it was exhausting, but I think in the end it was really worth doing. Documentaries, for me, have been really inspiring, and it always helps, I think, all of us, to see that there are people who’ve lived lives behind what looks like a pretty fantastic career. It’s not like it’s all rainbows and lollipops. There’s a lot that goes into somebody wanting to pour their heart out into music. I certainly have had my ups, but I’ve certainly had my downs as well. And I think it was a story worth telling, and I thought that Amy Scott did a beautiful job with choosing what the story was. It’s always also really interesting when you think about how much of it winds up on the cutting floor that you feel like is important facets to your life, but in the end, it can only be 90 minutes. So yeah, it was difficult and it was really tiring to sit and remember so many memories, but in the end, really, I think a worthwhile thing to do.

DO YOU STILL STAND BEHIND YOUR 2019 STATEMENT THAT THREADS WOULD BE

YOUR LAST ALBUM?

SC: Okay, so that is a tricky question. Yes, I definitely felt like when I made the Threads record that there were so many things about making that record that made me feel like I could not follow it up with an album. That, for me, was a beautiful stepping off point and also because it was such a tribute to so many people that have brought me to where I am. I felt like it was a beautiful way to close the door on a chapter of making full albums and really embrace the idea of just putting

out songs, particularly since I feel like the listening public doesn’t listen to albums in their original configuration. We piecemeal music, we run playlists, we download a song here, a song there. And so it felt like sort of a futile and very expensive venture to spend the love and the time compiling a bunch of songs when, really, people would not hear it in that context. But, that being said, I’m working on a body of songs right now that may be an EP, maybe six, seven songs. It may wind up being a full-length album depending on what I feel like I can’t not put on it. So there you go. The moral of that story is never say never.

YOU SAID BEFORE THAT IT IS “UBER IMPORTANT TO SUPPORT OUR VETERANS.” CAN YOU EXPAND ON THAT SENTIMENT?

SC: There are a lot of important causes, but for me, I can’t overlook the fact that we enjoy a free life in this country because of a lot of people who’ve dedicated their lives to defending that idea and those ideals. It does grieve me that so many people who’ve dedicated their lives and who have come home changed people are not getting the services that they need, are not being lifted up and carried on all of our shoulders. When my now rising sophomore went on his eighth-grade trip to Arlington Cemetery and I got to be a chaperone, I could not believe how humbled I felt to learn all that we learned about people who have given their lives to defend our ability to speak our minds and our ability to live our lives freely. That doesn’t mean that we get to act like jerks. And I think in this particular day and age, it would be wonderful if everyone, but particularly those who are in public service, could go and take a tour of Arlington and hear the stories of the people that have not only defended our rights, but also given us the pleasure of being able to be wonderful citizens. And hopefully planted in our minds that that doesn’t give us the right to be jerks. And that is the end of my lecture on that. I live with a veteran. He is my old bus driver, he’s my security person, he served. I hear some of the stories about him just getting the healthcare that he needs, and it’s very exasperating to me. These people should be put first. So anything I can do, particularly with Wounded Warriors and other organizations that serve veterans, I’m in.

83 | CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/FRANKLIN JULY 2023

WHAT OTHER CAUSES DO YOU SUPPORT?

SC: I am a giant environmentalist. I do feel like that the environment should come first because without the health of our planet, none of us are going to wind up being healthy. I think we’re seeing now a ticking clock and we realize the urgency of it. However, there’s so much money that gets passed from hand to hand in our government and some of these things that really matter to the American people are put on the back burner. And that really grieves me when I consider I’m raising two kids. I also am very involved in cancer research. I’m a cancer survivor, so I’ve always been involved in breast cancer research specifically. And then other small foundations — Adopt a Teacher is very important to me, as is the Delta Children’s Home, which exists in my hometown. And Flint Global supports kids who are aging out of the foster system.

I READ AN ARCHITECTURAL DIGEST ARTICLE THAT YOU’RE SORT OF AN ANTIQUE AND JUNK COLLECTOR. WHAT’S SOMETHING ELSE ABOUT YOURSELF THAT MOST PEOPLE MIGHT NOT KNOW?

SC: Oh my goodness. Well, yeah, I do buy or I used to. I put a moratorium on my buying junk because at a certain point it’s a fine line between collecting and hoarding. But people might not know I am an avid, however, very novice, horticulturalist. We’ve just put in a greenhouse and we’ve been planting gardens and we are trying to go completely produce independent from grocery stores. We’re also trying to eat meat that is sourced, and thank the Lord that we have the means to do that. I feel very blessed, but also at the same time, extremely annoyed with the kind of food that Americans wind up eating when you compare what’s going on in other countries as far as what’s allowed and what’s not allowed in our diets, organically and chemically. So yes, people might not know that.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU AND YOUR CAREER?

SC: Well, like I said, I am writing. I’m going to have a song coming out pretty soon that I’m really excited about but I can’t tell you much about it. But I’m really excited about what’s coming out next. We’re doing a whole bunch of festivals this summer, which already have been fun. I’m getting ready to do Bonnaroo. I’ve also completed

a one woman show, which hopefully we will get up and going in the next year.

WHAT IS SOMETHING MOTHERHOOD HAS TAUGHT YOU?

SC: Man, I’ll tell you what, motherhood has been the most amazing transformation for me. I mean, it really has simplified my life in so many ways. I mean, schedule-wise, not so much, but simplifying it in the context of what comes first and what my life centers around. It makes decision making very easy. My kids come first. Also, I don’t want to miss out. It goes really fast. I have a 16-year-old now, and I feel like literally a month ago he was a toddler. So I don’t want to miss out on any time left with my boys now that they’re teenagers. I only have so many summers. So I guess what it’s taught me is the absolute depth of love. And also it’s kept me, I feel like, really young and man, I do not sit down.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT LIVING IN TENNESSEE? DO YOU HAVE ANY SPECIAL PLACES IN FRANKLIN YOU LOVE? I SAW YOU ONCE AT SWEET CECE’S!

SC: Oh, that is so funny. Yes, we love Sweet CeCe’s. I love Tennessee. I mean, I grew up three hours and 15 minutes right up the road in southeast Missouri. It feels very similar to Tennessee. The people that I’ve grown up with, the communities I’ve grown up in have all felt very grounding, very Puritan work ethic, good, solid, family-oriented, principled people. And I do feel that in Tennessee. I feel it in Nashville. I love the terrain here. I love that it’s rolling hills, that you can have land here but still be close to a grocery store. I love that you can be a well-known person and raise a family here and people not only respect it, but defend it and honor it. Nobody hassles you here. I think the community here enjoys having country and all kinds of musicians here and wants them to be at home here, and that’s a lovely thing.

I’ve always loved Franklin, love Leiper’s Fork. We used to live in College Grove, so we’re definitely Williamson County. We’ve been Williamson County people and my kids went to school at a great school there for their first years. I love the antique stores. I mean, what can I say? I love junking. I love collecting in Franklin. There are so many great spots. And I do love the old houses. I love the history there. It’s a really cool sort of stepping back in time feel.  SherylCrow.com

MORE THAN A FARM

A Peek Into the Development of Southall Meadows Event Venue

PROVIDED

Nestled in the heart of Williamson County, Southall Meadows is a testament to the power of family and the beauty of shared dreams. Owned by Sarah Legan, a long-time resident, this picturesque venue holds a special place in her heart, as it has been the site of her brother’s and many friends’ weddings and celebrations, the former being the pivotal moment that ignited her passion for creating extraordinary events.

At first, Sarah had modest aspirations for the space, envisioning only a few events per year within the historic 100-year-old barn that graced the property. However, with the guidance of a supportive vendor who helped kick start her business and shared invaluable knowledge, Sarah soon found herself dreaming of a future event venue beyond her wildest imagination.

As a lover of all things art and with a background in sculpture, Sarah saw events as a form of art, meticulously orchestrating how people moved through the space, creating a dynamic and unforgettable experience. This realization ignited her desire to design a venue where celebrations could unfold harmoniously amidst the breathtaking backdrop of Southall Meadows.

Embracing the legacy of her family’s farm, Sarah carefully cultivated the venue, adding unique touches that make it one-of-a-kind. The intimacy and privacy it offers set it apart from other event spaces, providing an exclusive haven for clients and their guests. With the barn already standing proudly as the centerpiece, Sarah sought to juxtapose modern touches against its rustic allure when designing the event hall, resulting in a harmonious blend of old-world charm and contemporary elegance.

Countless clients have marveled at the beauty of Southall Meadows, and Sarah’s favorite feedback remains: “I did not think that I wanted a barn, but I love this barn.” It is a testament to the transformative power of this cherished space and the enduring love that she pours into it.

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, Southall Meadows is a living testament to the connection between nature, community, and

celebration. While the venue has blossomed into a thriving event destination, the essence of the family’s working farm remains intact. The spaces have been thoughtfully added and cultivated, fostering a sense of community while embracing the land’s natural beauty.

When asked about her favorite aspect of the venue, Sarah’s answer is unequivocal. She cherishes the ability to create intimate experiences for her clients, immersing them in nature while providing ample space for them to celebrate their special moments. Southall Meadows offers a respite from the bustle of everyday life, a sanctuary where guests can connect and forge lifelong memories.

The Franklin Transit Authority

When you think of the Franklin Trolley, you might think of the old-fashioned vehicle with the red paint and a bell that dings as it’s arriving. While you can still catch one of those trollies at special events and festivals, the Franklin Transit Authority has become a highly-functioning and greatly appreciated transportation service for the citizens of Franklin who either prefer public transit or those who need it.

Once upon a time, to use the bus system in Franklin, a person may have spent a lot of time waiting for the bus and riding it. That is no longer the case according to Stanton Higgs, Chief Operating Officer for TMA Group, a transportation solutions organization that works with Franklin Transit to provide the city with the best transit system possible. In 2018, Franklin Transit Authority and TMA Group performed a study of how the bus system could be more useful to the citizens of Franklin who use it. Now all buses operate on a 30-minute schedule with buses traveling both directions at the same time. “You don’t have to wait as long, and you don’t have to be on the bus as long,” said Higgs.

The fixed routes consist of the Red Route which runs from the Bradford & Davison area to Fieldstone Farms and makes stops at the Library and the Kroger at Independence Square. The Blue Route travels from the Downtown Transit Center all the way to Williamson Medical Center and stops at Walmart, Cool Springs Galleria, and Columbia State Community College.

Another program offered by FTA is known as TODD (Transit on Demand). For those who live or need to travel a bit too far from the bus route, they may simply call and schedule a ride. TODD offers pick-ups from one location to the next anywhere within the Franklin city limits.

FTA also has a program through Williamson County schools that provides students with disabilities the opportunity to become familiar with the transit system so that they may be comfortable using it in their adult lives as citizens of Franklin.

Information on fares, schedules, TODD and much more can be found at the Downtown Transit Center located at 708 Columbia Avenue or at FranklinTransit.org.

Perfect 7 Pools Will Bring Your Vision To Life

Back in the days before Franklin welcomed a boom of newcomers, backyard swimming pools weren’t as common as they are today. “The general consumer thought of swimming pools as something you’d want in a tropical or a desert climate,” says Jason Shapiro, owner of Perfect7 Pools. “Middle Tennessee has cold winters, so many quality pool builders didn’t consider coming to Franklin to build swimming pools. Homeowners had to rely on neighborhood pools that are only open during the summer. Even the rich and famous residents had pools that lacked quality construction and technological advancements that provide a trouble-free, pleasurable experience.”

Now people are moving from southern California or Florida - where pools are expected and there are several quality builders for homeowners to choose from – or they’re coming from northern climates with long, freezing winters and Tennessee seems “tropical”

by comparison. This has created a huge consumer demand for private, backyard oases.

Jason was born in Kansas City and grew up in Arizona, where he and his wife Jayme met as teenagers in their youth group. They celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary last year and have raised four beautiful children together. Jason started his career in sales, where he learned to manage customer expectations, deliver on his promises and walk his clients through the frustrating aspects of construction projects. He started Perfect 7 Pools, named for his family of six plus their “perfect” golden retriever, in 2012.

In Arizona, Jason began developing the foundation and knowledge of how pools should be built. “Our pools are easy to own because our building philosophy eliminates the most common problems and we include technologies that simplify

the owner’s experience. We also have a highly advanced in-floor cleaning and circulation system that removes debris automatically and keeps the water crystal clear. The older pools in our area weren’t built properly,” he explains, “and they have a lot of problems. This caused consumers to think pools are a hassle to maintain, but that’s simply not true if the pool is built the right way. Our pools require less than 15 minutes per week to maintain, which we can do for you.”

As a custom builder, Jason warns that low-price builders will cost consumers more in the long run, as improper filtration and undersized pipes cause a myriad of issues and lead to higher maintenance costs. “A properly built pool should be clear and inviting for your family to swim at any time, without effort. The first sign that a builder has cut corners is water that is consistently dirty or turning green. Unfortunately, there’s

something wrong with the way the pool was built and at this point it’s too late to fix it,so homeowners need to choose a trusted, quality builder.”

Perfect 7 Pools builds custom, luxury pools that often include five-star amenities such as fire and water features, all-natural travertine paver hardscape that stays cool in the hot summer, built-in outdoor kitchens, shallow-water tanning ledges, waterfalls and more – almost anything imaginable. He estimates that about 85 percent of customers include a hot tub with their pool, furthering the year-round use of the space.

“The best designs are in balance with the size and style of the house,” Jason says. “I want to see the homeowner’s vision and make it a reality. I don’t sell people products,

I educate people about the benefits and drawbacks of the various options and let them choose what is best for their family, then I build their vision.”

Straight-line designs are more popular now, with darker interior finishes and black & white contrasts, matching the painted-brick exteriors seen on new homes today. However, lagoon-style, freeform pools are another option consumers love, with curved shapes and natural rock accents adding texture and interest. If you’re dreaming of lounging in your own clear-blue swimming pool, splashing with your family or cooling off during a hot summer day, whatever the perfect swimming pool looks like to you, Jason and Perfect 7 Pools will bring your vision to life. How To Work From Home With Kids

Are you one of the large percentage of Americans who now works remotely from home? If so, you may be trying to juggle that responsibility with caring for little ones at home or your school-age kids during the summer break.

This work/family dynamic may make it seem impossible to get anything done. But the following tips can help you develop a routine and environment that works for you and your family.

Create and Follow Routines

Kids thrive on consistent routines like those they have at school. So make a list of what your family needs to accomplish throughout the day, such as work calls, completing tasks, school work, meals, chores, and anything else. Be sure to include some time for fun as well!

Now, start filling in a schedule with the activities that occur at set times and work on other responsibilities and activities to create a family schedule. Include your kids in the planning so they feel involved and more willing to follow the routine. Then post the agenda where the whole family can see it. Also, be sure to adjust the design of the schedule for the age of your kids. Younger children benefit from straightforward visuals using bright colors, precise times, and pictures to make the plan clear.

Set Clear Expectations

Kids and adults tend to do better when there are clear expectations set beforehand. Agree on a set of rules and expectations for the day regarding your work time and their school time. With older kids, sit down and make a written contract. If you have younger kids, work together to create a poster with visuals. To make it clear, talk about what different parts of your schedule, especially your work time, look and sound like, and what everyone should and shouldn't be doing.

This will probably be a difficult adjustment at first. So it can help to set up a visual reminder to let your kids know when you cannot be disturbed except for emergencies. Create a sign outside your workspace that clearly states your work hours' beginning and end times. This can help kids to be more patient. For younger kids, use a countdown clock so they can anticipate the end time.

Designate a Workspace

If you're not used to working from home, recreating a space that feels like going to a workplace can get you into a better routine and improve your focus. Try to create your workplace away from the main areas of your home and, if possible, with a door you can close. These tricks will also help remind your kids not to disturb you when you're in your workspace. Make your workspace as similar to the one at your job as possible. You can also play music or wear noise-canceling headphones to reduce distractions if another adult or older child cares for the younger ones.

Ask for Help

This isn't the time to try to do everything yourself. If you have a partner at home, take turns spending time with the kids so you can each have uninterrupted time to focus on work or time to yourself to recharge. If you're feeling

overwhelmed or are struggling to get something done for work, talk to your boss or team about the situation before things become too difficult. If you're struggling to balance work and being home with the kids, try talking to them at their level. Kids are more aware and understanding than we often realize. So an open conversation with them may help. It may also be necessary to hire a babysitter to come to your home or where you can send your kids, at least for part of the day, to improve productivity.

Be Flexible

Unexpected things will come up in your work, with your kids, or other aspects of your life. So, try to build in some wiggle room because you'll likely need to make changes as you go. For example, if the day is going really smoothly, perhaps work a little longer to accomplish a bit more in case things don't go smoothly on another day.

Stay Positive

Focus on the positive aspects of being home with your kids, and remember, there is finally a light at the end of the tunnel. Try to balance work and quality time with your family while you're working from home. The effort you make to do so can help your family bond and turn a challenging period into one filled with good memories.

It’s How They’re Wired

SOUTHERN ELECTRIC’S NEW OWNERS ARE LIVING UP TO A LONGTIME LEGACY

When a quartet of lifelong friends and relatives suddenly find themselves in business together, things can be electrifying.

And so it has been for the owners of Spring Hill-based Southern Electric of Tennessee. Two years ago, the purveyor of residential and commercial electrical services experienced a change in leadership in which the original owner handed over the business to his handpicked successors. The transfer wasn’t entirely unexpected, but the timing was.

“It was in December two years ago that we had our weekly meeting,” says co-owner Tracy Bryan, whose father, Jay Billman, founded the company as Billman Electric in 1993. “That’s when Mr. Billman announced his retirement and wanted to put the plan in motion. He had talked about retiring for a few years, but we never thought it would happen.”

Since that day, Tracy, along with Robert Adair and Jaime and George Gore, have been at the helm of the firm that has been serving residential and commercial customers in Williamson and Maury Counties for 30 years. “We all worked for my dad for quite a while and for him to pick the four of us to take over the business when he retired was pretty nice. It was a surprise,” she says.

Tracy’s day-to-day roll involves permits, payroll, human resources, receiving and billing. She also works with George on new construction quotes. Jaime serves as office manager while Adair is the firm’s lead residential technician.

Adair and George Gore have worked together since 2003, first for Billman and now for Southern Electric. An Oklahoma native, Adair says he “got into electrical work because no one in my family knew how. So I learned.” He enjoys helping customers save money by performing routine maintenance. “You should have a panel inspection every year,” he says. “And if you’re experiencing intermittent power failures on any circuit, call your electrician. It may not seem like a big deal, but it could be a sign of a greater issue that needs to be addressed.”

As one might expect, the owners are, indeed, like family. The Gores are married, and so are Adair and Bryan, though not to each other. “But we are like brother-and-sister,” says Bryan. There are a total of 15 children in their respective families. Bryan and her husband, Travis, lead the way with eight. Adair and his wife, Karie, have five while the Gores have two.

“Running a successful business is not a one-man show,” says Bryan. “Everyone has to do their part so that everything operates as it should. That’s indicative of the work ethic that Mr. Billman instilled in us and it’s an honor to carry on that tradition.”

In 2022, the city of Franklin worked with an urban development expert to evaluate the historic downtown district. One intriguing recommendation was to add more decorative planting along Main Street, as street flowers encourage guests to linger and shop more at local stores and restaurants.

The Downtown Franklin Association (DFA) immediately began strategizing how to add more living color to downtown’s streetscape, partnering with the city and local small business Container Creations for “Flowers on Main” in 2023. The campaign provides basic container gardens for the merchants, in hopes of rallying as many as possible to install and/or enhance flower displays in front of their stores and restaurants.

The Heritage Foundation has worked to supply potted flowers next to the benches along Main Street, to be refreshed and maintained seasonally by Container Creations. The city of Franklin is also enhancing the planters and hanging baskets that adorn downtown lampposts. Ten new baskets were added in 2023, for a total of 32, as well as five new landscaped beds containing an average of 300 plants apiece. Main Street merchants are encouraged to add their own floral flair to the streetscape as well. To that end, DFA sponsored a contest for the public to vote on their top three favorite floral displays in the latter half of June.

"Embracing the beauty of flowers throughout our Historic Downtown Main Street is not just an aesthetic choice. It's an act of nurturing our community and supporting our local merchants,” said Julie Walton Garland, owner of Walton’s Antique & Estate Jewelry and a past promotions chair of DFA. “As a Franklin native and third-generation business owner, I've experienced firsthand the transformative power of these blooms, breathing life and color into our streets, captivating visitors and instilling a sense of pride in our shared legacy."

As a division of the Heritage Foundation of Williamson County, the Downtown Franklin Association is a nationally accredited Main Street America program, invested in supporting the promotion, economic vitality, organization (connection of stakeholders), and design of our special district. The DFA supports the continued revitalization and purposeful evolution of downtown Franklin, in the context of historic preservation, by maintaining a diverse economic base, promoting a unique local shopping experience, fostering accessible and attractive public spaces, and forging partnerships across all sectors.

With the installations and online polls complete at the end of June, guests can now enjoy a leisurely stroll down Main Street, relax among the ambient flower displays next to the benches, and view the contest winners and merchant displays online at DowntownFranklinTN. com/FlowersOnMain .

If you’re subject to house envy or the type that becomes jealous when you see a neighbor installing a new backyard getaway with a pool, you may want to stop reading now.

Still here? Okay, you’ve been warned.

The Hills is a new and exclusive neighborhood under development just south of Interstate 840 where Dean Road terminates in Thompson Station. This is the site of an old cattle farm with tobacco fields but is soon to be a sprawling 40-house development on multiple acre estate-sized lots.

While seeing the new construction of large homes in this area of Tennessee is not an abnormal occurrence, these houses are expected to be unique.

“This is where luxury meets nature,” says Matt Wood of LTG Homes, one of the builders who in partnership with Arnold Homes is constructing the first build. “Each house will reside on 1-to-10 acres of land with one-hundred and thirty acres of green space. We’re planning $3 million to $8-9 million dollar homes.”

These are not just any homes though. Expected to be merged with the land, picture estate builds with large bay windows overlooking the forest, with multiple car garages, and surrounded by walking trails and bridal spaces.

There are three builders involved with the project under the development of Bill Varney, a previously retired real estate developer from Florida. Bill became un-retired after his son-in-law, Colt Morton, convinced him to come look at the area.

Colt and Matt are prior neighbors who had been looking for a construction opportunity. While Matt and his wife were born in the Williamson County area, Colt relocated a few years ago from Palm Beach, Florida.

“[Seven-years ago] we didn’t know where exactly to locate,” Colt says. “We fell in love with Thompson Station. Loved everything about it. Loved the rolling hills and the trees. Loved the proximity to shopping. It didn’t feel like you’re in a big city and still feels like you’re in Tennessee.”

Colt convinced his father-in-law to follow him to Thompson Station. “[Bill] had huge success with niche neighborhoods in exclusive areas. Estate neighborhoods. He loved the area as well, and together, we looked at property all over for about a year.”

They eventually came across a 225-acre plot of land that met their vision of creating an exclusive neighborhood that balances privacy with community.

“[It worked because] the owner wanted to sell it as one piece,” says Colt. “The zoning allows for one-acre parcels, but that is not our vision. We wanted to keep the integrity of the property and Thompson Station.” When faced with adjusting the plots to the land, “We moved the road, not the tree.”

The Hills site plan

LTG Homes, a partnership between Matt and Randy Arnold, has the first home under construction. It’s a sprawling 7,300 square-feet build with five bedrooms, eight bathrooms, a custom pool, and four-car garage. The slabs are being poured for two other foundations and the other plots are in varying stages of development with about 18 still available for purchase.

“I got into real estate about five years ago,” says Matt. “Really good friends with Arnold Homes and Randy Arnold is a family friend and mentor, so we started a partnership to build one-of-a-kind homes together. Owners can bring their own builder and architect, but we’re trying to push others to use one of the three builders with knowledge of the project. It’s easy to build a house with nice finishes, it’s harder to build a home with character and flow. We’ve figured it out.” TheHills.homes

The WannaBeatles Celebrate 15 Years of Singalongs

For 15 years The WannaBeatles have been delighting audiences with their tribute performances saluting the original Fab Four. “I call it our smorgasbord of Beatles' music,” says band leader and Franklin resident Dennis Scott. “I believe in not just recreating the music but also giving people a great show. We love getting the audience involved in different ways, whether it is singing along, dancing or laughing at our funny parodies—like ‘Yesterday’ turned into ‘Creme Brulee.’ We put together mash-ups of different Beatles' songs and also mix in other hit songs from the same era.”

The family-oriented performance group frequently plays festivals, theaters and events including last month’s 2023 Brentwood Summer Concert Series at Crockett Park. “With The WannaBeatles, you should expect the unexpected,” he continues. “Some people may expect the wigs, fake noses and Sgt. Pepper uniforms that other groups wear. But we don’t do that. We decided a long time ago that if we can be ourselves, we are more free to talk about the music, have fun onstage and do some comedy.”

L to R: Nathan Burbank, Bryan Cumming, David Toledo, Dennis Scott

The WannaBeatles evolved from a cover band with a standing gig at the Mexicali Grill in Franklin, where they noticed how much the audience enjoyed Beatles' tunes. One of the regulars even came up with the band’s name.

“We were just doing the songs from memory,” says Scott. “We decided if we were going to form a tribute band, we needed to buckle down and do it right. We started pulling out all the music and isolated tracks that we could find. We learned that we were missing a lot, so we had to go back to school and really throw ourselves into the nitty-gritty of Beatles' songs.”

In addition to Scott, The WannaBeatles includes Nathan Burbank, Bryan Cumming and David Toledo, all accomplished musicians. In order to re-create the music accurately, they often play more than one instrument simultaneously.

“We put an emphasis on creating the music as true to the record as we can and then incorporating what we bring to the table, which is our chemistry of four guys who have been together for 15 years. We aren’t confined by being The Beatles. We and no one else will ever be The Beatles, but we can honor them by doing their music right and having the same kind of joy and chemistry onstage.”

During their time together, The WannaBeatles’ milestones include a rooftop concert in downtown Nashville to celebrate the 40th anniversary of The Beatles’ final performance, a 50th-anniversary concert commemorating The Beatles’ appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show, and staging a "Welcome Back Paul Party" when Paul McCartney came to town.

The WannaBeatles earned a coveted Grammy Award nomination for Best Spoken Word Album for Fab Fan Memories—The Beatles Bond, which compiled verbal remembrances of fans’ encounters with the group. “We hold the dubious honor of losing to Betty White,” laughs Scott, who previously earned two Grammys for work in children’s music. “So we wrote “Oh Betty! (The Betty White Song)” and she sent us an autographed photo.

“I love playing in this band because it’s so joyful. You get such energy back from the audience because at the end of the evening, they are singing and waving their hands to ‘Hey Jude.’”

Experience The WannaBeatles’ magic on July 14 at Westhaven Foundation Park, July 15 at King’s Bowl or Sept. 5 at the Nashville Downtown Library courtyard. TheWannaBeatles.com

• 8 drops eucalyptus essential oil

• 1.5 ounces distilled water

(minus 1 teaspoon to make room for the essential oils in the bottle)

• .5 ounce 95% proof grain alcohol*

INSTRUCTIONS:

MATERIALS:

• 10 drops lemon essential oil

• 10 drops lemongrass essential oil

• 4 drops lavender essential oil

• 1.5 ounces distilled water

(minus 1 teaspoon to make room for the essential oils in the bottle)

• .5 ounce 95% proof grain alcohol*

INSTRUCTIONS:

In a 2-ounce spray bottle, add the grain alcohol (or Solubol) and drop in essential oils. Swirl to combine. Place the cap back on the bottle. Allow the oils to disperse in the alcohol for about 1 hour, then add distilled water, swirling again to combine.

*The grain alcohol is used as a preservative as well as a carrier for the oils, but you can also use a product like this instead of grain alcohol at a 1:4 ratio (1 drop essential oil to 4 drops Solubol) if you’d rather and then just fill the rest with water to fill the 2-ounce spray bottle.

While there can be concern about citrus oils on the skin when exposed to sunlight, lemongrass isn’t a photosensitive oil, and if lemon essential oil is steam-distilled rather than cold-pressed (Oui Fresh essential oils are cold-pressed) it can be used on the skin. So just make sure to note which one your lemon oil is and only spray on clothes if you don’t have a skin-safe lemon oil (which is an application method a lot of people prefer anyway if they are more sensitive to oils).

ADVICE FROM THE EXPERT

Amy Hatcher APRN has been an injector for 16 years and is one of the leading trainers for Botox across the country She owns 2 AWSkinCo+ practices right here in Franklin and specializes in antiaging and full face rejuvenation

Skincare matters!

"We have so many clients that come to our practice for injectables They are committed to getting their Botox every 3 months or filler annually but they aren t investing in their skin health No matter what we do to improve the structures under the skin with injectables, a client is going to really look their best when their skin is healthy and vibrant Clients come in concerned about a specific line or wrinkle or spot but we all want to look our best and skincare is the first and most important step!

You are the driver, we are the educator

"Our consultations are really an amazing opportunity for clients to learn all of their options We offer a full line of injectable laser skincare and wellness services It can be overwhelming as well an investment Our goal is to share all of the options with our clients, educate and help guide them along their journey so that they are empowered to make the best decision to achieve their personal skincare and aesthetic goals Whether a client is ready to spend $200 or $2000 we want them to get the treatment that is going to give them the best result

Some times it takes a little, sometimes it takes a lot

It s really important to work with a provider that is experienced knowledgeable and aligned with your goals One that you trust There are times that we advise a client not to do a service or that less may be better and there are times that skincare and laser and injectables and hormone balance all together may be the best way to achieve a more restful natural and beautiful outcome Of course it doesn t have to happen all at once but with the guidance of the right injector and aesthetician the results can be so amazing It requires expertise, a relationship, a plan, sometimes patience and the willingness to walk the journey to amazing skin and a more youthful appearance

Fabulous Flatbread

PHOTOGRAPHY
BY JENNA OXFORD
EAT RIGHT | FOOD + BEVERAGE 138
This dish is from Chef Evon Profitt, the director of culinary operations for all of Westside Concepts in Arizona. This flatbread with grilled peaches, house-made rosemary paneer cheese, soppressata, fresh mint, and pistachios with a balsamic drizzle is to die for.

Grilled Peach Flatbread with House-Made Rosemary Paneer Cheese

Yield: 4 flatbreads

INGREDIENTS:

• 2 peaches cut into 8 pieces each

• 12 slices soppressata or any salami

• Fresh mint

• 1 tbsp. olive oil

• ¼ cup pistachios, chopped

• Balsamic reduction

• 4 baked naan bread

FOR

THE PANEER CHEESE:

• 6 cups whole milk

• 2 tbsp. rice wine vinegar

• ½ tbsp. fresh rosemary, chopped

• 1 tsp. kosher salt

HOW TO MAKE PANEER CHEESE:

Paneer cheese is made by curdling milk using an acidic additive such as lemon juice or vinegar. Paneer cheese does not use any kind of rennet, nor fermentation or aging.

In a pot, bring 6 cups of whole milk to 200 degrees. Once milk has reached temp., stir in the 2 tbsp. of vinegar and turn off heat; milk will begin to separate. Allow milk to curd for 5 minutes, strain whey and curds into a cheesecloth-lined colander. Transfer curds to a mixing bowl and add chopped rosemary and 1 tsp. kosher salt, mix ingredients together, reserve the cheesecloth for the next step. Place the curds back into the cheesecloth, pull the corners of the cloth together, ring out excess whey from the curds, and hang for 30 minutes to continue draining. Once the curds have drained, place cheesecloth-wrapped curds back into the colander and place a heavy item on top, in order to press the curds into shape and press more of the whey from the cheese, for 3-4 hours. Use cheese fresh or keep refrigerated up to 4 days.

FLATBREAD:

Brush olive oil onto both sides of naan flatbread, and place in oven on rack for 10 minutes at 400 degrees, or grill for 2 minutes each side. Grill peach slices for 2 minutes each side, or place in oiled sauté pan till each side begins to caramelize. On a cutting board, lay flatbread down, and place grilled peach slices around flatbread. Take small pieces of Paneer cheese and place throughout over the peaches. Be creative and find place for the soppressata or salami of your choice. Garnish with crushed pistachios and torn fresh mint. Cut flatbread, transfer to serving plates, and drizzle with balsamic reduction.

“I love the use of fresh, locally sourced peaches, and giving people the chance to make an easy, versatile cheese at home with ingredients that many already have in their refrigerators and pantries.”

CREATING YOUR HOME

The art of styling your home.

Home styling is more than space planning and staging - the most important part of the discovery is you. It’s personal. It’s about learning what brings you joy, sourcing and coordinating the things you love, and arranging them in a way that functions beautifully, looks stylish, and, most importantly, feels like home.

When it comes to styling your home, Sandy Mahoney from Create Home, a curated home store, encourages you to keep in mind these three simple things:

FAVORITES

“Some people don’t recognize their own favorites,” says Sandy. “We have a job to find what favorites work.” She understands that people know what they like generally but can struggle to pull those things into their home. Incorporating a client’s favorite aspects into a design, even small things like an antique clock, a gift from a family member, or a piece of art that they love, are what turns a space into a home.

COLLABORATION

More than knowledge of home decoration, architecture, and style, a big part of an interior designer is simply pushing people out of their comfort zones. “Stylists get people to think about something they haven’t thought about before,” Sandy explains. “Crafting ideas between the expertise of the designer and preferences of the client produce better ideas than any single party could come up with on their own.”

STYLING

Sandy laughs when pressed about styling. “I mean, we don’t cut our own hair,” she remarks. Her point here is that home stylists, like hair stylists, have a specific area of expertise. They enhance the function of space, solve challenges, and have a wealth of experience to draw from. They know how to build rooms around clients’ preferences while still creating an aesthetic space they know the client will love.

PRO-TIP:

When using a neutral palette combine texture and contrast to create a softer look that feels like home.

Weaving some of everyone’s favorite things into the design process creates a connection to the space and your home.

An important aspect of designing a home for the whole family is getting input from everyone. “If each person is involved, even in a small way, it creates a different connection to your home,” says Sandy. She adds that there are a lot of ways to involve every member of the family, from letting them add to specific rooms to simply including some of their favorites around the house. “We’ve had kids come paint part of the walls in their room with their favorite color to let them feel like they’re part of the process.” However, Sandy ensures that everything comes together in the end. “Don’t worry, we always re-paint.”

Sandra Mahoney, founder of Create Home in Excelsior, MN, has been sought out by clients and followers for her artful, eclectic design and keen ability to create home collections. As a real estate broker, interior designer, and home builder, Sandy loves helping people. For years, she has helped many find and design their homes.
