“When my wife and I were looking for a trust attorney, we interviewed four different attorneys. We were most impressed by Justin Gilbert’s breadth and depth of knowledge. He listened carefully to our needs and requirements and he recommended we create a grantor trust for our taxable assets and retirement trust for our pretax assets.
He was the only attorney who was knowledgeable about retirement trust and the benefits such trust would offer.
I am a very detailed person, I read every word of the documents and I require that I understand everything in the trusts. Justin answered all my questions to my satisfaction and readily agreed to make changes that I wished to make. At no time did Justin show impatience with my requests or inquiries. Justin always met his commitments to deliver draft documents or changes there to.
There will come a time when our children will need an attorney’s services to settle our estate in accordance with the terms of our trusts. My instructions to them is to employ and depend on Justin’s services. I HIGHLY recommend Justin to anyone who needs a trust attorney. I am very hard to please because I like perfection. That is what I pay for and Justin delivered.”

Let’s hear it for the boys!
To the men in our life...this issue pays homage to you! Whether you are a Dad, a Grandfather, the "fun Uncle," or a positive male role model to those around you, we are grateful for all you offer to the loved ones in your life and in our community. We put this issue together to showcase male leaders in our community from all walks of life, and all with a story to tell or words of wisdom to share.
We hope you enjoy hearing from superstar and Nashville resident Kane Brown on fame and fatherhood.
We had conversations with several men who are making a difference through their leadership in our community and all of them have a unique story to tell.
And let’s not forget hobbies. From bourbon to barbecue there is something for everyone’s tastebuds to enjoy.
June is for summer explorations, cool drinks by the pool and warm evenings by the firepit.
We hope you can enjoy the slower summer days and celebrate the gentlemen in your life.

LOVE YOUR LAZY LAWN
An easy way to help the ecosystem
Give some thought to this. Almost all US fruit and grain crops depend on pollination, yet our insect population has declined by 75% in the last 25 years - and most pollinators are insects.
Fortunately, keeping pollinators (and our local farms) alive couldn’t be easier. Just get lazy about your lawn!
Lawns mowed every two weeks offer more food for pollinators than lawns mowed weekly. So, while you’re lounging on the couch every other Saturday, your longer grass will be supporting American food systems. As a bonus, longer lawns also need less water, so being lazy saves you money, too.
Perfect lawns are literally the empty calories of the ecosystem. By letting go of that green-carpet ideal, you’ll add color to your landscape by allowing dandelions, violets, and white clover to decorate your grass. More important, these “weeds” feed pollinators which, in turn, feed us.
Here’s one more way being lazy can save the world: skip the pesticides. Pesticides kill pollinators, and they’re hardly health food for humans, birds, and pets, either. In fact, research shows that when bees visit plants treated with neonicotinoids (a chemical in most pesticides), even small amounts can build up over time and kill the hive. Neonicotinoids disorient bees and disrupt their fertility. Worse, they can linger in plants and pollen for 2-4 years.
So be a hero. Stay in bed this weekend and stop fussing over your lawn.

QE Roofing Became The Go To Roofing Company Of Nashville
In the bustling landscape of Middle Tennessee's roofing industry, there is no shortage of companies vying for attention. "QE Roofing goes beyond customer expectations," says owner Austin Cowell. “QE Roofing mixes the ingredients of teamwork, exceptional service, quality products, and decades of experience to ensure the business succeeds.”
Austin notes that what makes QE Roofing stand out is its partnership with Owens Corning as a preferred contractor for 14 years. Owens Corning is the only Fortune 500 company that manufactures shingles and they consider their preferred

installers to be the top two percent of all contractors. Using Owens Corning’s Design IQ tool, customers can see each shingle color on their home. Using this unique tool ensures that customers get exactly what they want.
QE Roofing's commitment to excellence extends far beyond its business success. The company believes in giving back to the community that has supported them since the beginning. As a Partner in Hope of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, QE Roofing generously contributes a portion of its profits to this noble cause. Moreover, they provide free roof repairs to several non-profit organizations in middle Tennessee, finding deep fulfillment in helping others.
Coming up on his 20th year in the roofing business, Austin is grateful for the unwavering support of his wife, Sara, and his two sons, Skyler and Carson. Together, the company has completed over 4,400 re-roofs, leaving a lasting impact on the local community. Giving credit to his father for instilling core values of how to run a business, Austin says that “100 percent customer satisfaction and integrity were the keys to success that my father taught me growing up, and I aim to live by that every day.”
Hoping to pass the business legacy to his sons, Austin states, “I envision a future where my sons will continue the legacy of QE Roofing, starting from the lowest level and earning the respect of their co-workers. I’m confident they will lead a company while upholding the values that have made us great."
In his leisure, Austin finds solace and joy in the great outdoors. Whether it's fishing, hunting, or riding dirt bikes with his sons, nature has always served as a constant source of inspiration and rejuvenation for him. QERoofing.com

Peachy Beach Eats
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY | BY JUDY BEAUDIN
Summer vacation. The relaxation and relief from months of cold weather, busy school schedules and work deadlines can’t come fast enough. An escape to the coast is a popular choice for many in our area, where lazy days are spent soaking up the sun and finally getting toes in the sand. The price tag for the long-awaited pleasure often creeps higher than planned. The convenience of pool side concessions and expensive seafood restaurants can be a tempting alternative to cooking all week in the beach house. Taking just a little time upon arrival to prep, these easy-to-make recipes combine with a few purchased items to create multiple meals. They pack easily into your tote bag or cooler for tasty take-along lunches and afternoon snacks.
The beach destination of choice for much of Williamson County is the beaches of Florida’s 30A, or “The Emerald Coast.” Along the drive, a stop at Peach Park in Clanton, Alabama is as much a tradition for many as the vacation itself. After enjoying the cool refreshment of a peach ice cream cone, grab a bushel of fresh juicy peaches and hit the road for the final stretch of the journey. If another destination is in your plans, pick up a few bags of local farm-to-stand peaches right here at home before heading on your way. These make ahead peachy cooler-ready eats will save money and time all week long. Even the kids will love these alternatives to typical beach fare and hardly miss those burgers and fries.

From Law Books To Playbooks
John Griffith grew up in rural New Johnsonville, Tennessee, and has practiced personal injury law in Middle Tennessee for 25 years. He has lived in Franklin for 23 of them. John founded GriffithLaw in Franklin in 2016, and the firm has grown dramatically into one of the area’s largest personal injury law firms. He has received numerous awards and record-setting jury verdicts for the people he represents. However, some of his proudest accomplishments have taken place out on the field or on the mat, but always alongside family.
WHAT DO YOU DO FOR FUN WHEN YOU’RE NOT BEING A LAWYER?
Coaching football, playing guitar, and competing in Brazilian jiu jitsu. I played football at Waverly Central High School and at Vanderbilt – I was a strong safety there. I believe football teaches kids about life. It teaches teamwork, mental toughness and overcoming adversity. Being able to coach my son has been one of the greatest joys in life. I’ve coached him since he was seven years old when he played for the Franklin Cowboys. In my second career, I’d love to be a high school offensive coordinator. I also love
making music with my wife. She sings at our church and I play guitar alongside her. Such a true joy for me! She is such a great mom and wife. I definitely married up- I know it and am thankful every day that God gave me her.
HOW DID YOU DISCOVER JIU-JITSU?
A little over two years ago, my son was a senior in high school, and he asked if I’d be interested in doing martial arts with him. After training for three months, I was fanatically hooked. I’ve just finished my third competition. I’ve earned two silver medals and a bronze. I really want a gold medal, but if I don’t, it’s OK. I'm not giving up my day job.
WHAT ATTRIBUTES HAVE YOU DEVELOPED FROM SPORTS THAT YOU CARRY OVER INTO YOUR WORK?
I am either blessed or cursed to be, extremely competitive. I just can’t stand to lose, and I’m not going to let anybody out-prepare, outwork or outthink me. It’s a consistent theme in my life. Game days, trial days, jiu jitsu tournament days – I’m up at 4:30, and my heart is pumping, ready to roll.

FRANKLIN CASTLE HAS HOSTED EVERYONE FROM ALAN JACKSON TO AL CAPONE

Tucked away on a hill on Old Hillsboro Road is the Franklin landmark, Castle Recording Studios. The studio and event venue has hosted a who’s-who of superstar clients during its tenure and is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year.
“It’s pretty crazy,” says studio manager Lance Van Dyke. “You name a Nashville artist, they’ve probably been here at some point in their career.” He recalls recent visits by Carrie Underwood and Alan Jackson, as well as sessions with Chris Stapleton, Brooks & Dunn, Brad Paisley, Faith Hill, Miley Cyrus and Billy Ray Cyrus.
Owner Jozef Nuyens agrees, “We’ve welcomed the greatest of each genre—Lionel Richie to Whitney Houston to Neil Diamond to Metallica, and everything in between.”
But the intriguing history of The Castle dates back long before Nuyens turned it into a recording studio in 1983.
“The building was built between 1928 and 1932 under the auspices of Al Capone,” Nuyens says. “A mason literally took the rock out of the ground and carved it and built it. Capone used it as a rest stop when they were traveling between Chicago and New Orleans or Miami.” A gambling ring and speakeasy also operated out of the basement of the medieval-style building until it was raided by local law enforcement.
“In the ‘40s, it was a restaurant,” continues Nuyens. “Spencer Tracy and Bob Hope came here when they were filming nearby. There is a guest book with their signatures in it, and we have one of the original menus—with more drinks than food, of course.”
When the 1950s rolled around, the property was sold and remained in private hands for about 30 years. Ultimately, it was purchased by the Nuyens family, a popular internationally touring bluegrass band originally from Belgium.
Jozef Nuyens was attracted to The Castle’s unique history and picturesque location far away from Music Row. It offered the opportunity for space and creativity, which also suits it today as an event venue.

As an artist and musician, Nuyens had never been fully satisfied with the quality of his family’s recordings. “I wanted to get equipment that would make the sound like I always wanted to hear it,” he recalls. To achieve those results, he turned The Castle into one of the first digital recording studios in the world. Since then, its 40-year history also includes time as a publishing and production company, as well as a joint venture with Arista Records and its legendary leader Clive Davis.
Says Nuyens, “We’ve had over 500 gold and platinum acts come out of here, and the history is still going strong!”

LIFE DEFINING MUSIC

Carrying On The Legacy Of A Musical Family
Growing up with a father who was a very successful record producer, Dann Rogers was used to being around famous entertainers. “My dad, Lelan, was promoting people like Mickey Newbury and Bobby Vinton and all these famous R&B acts,” he says. “They were always in our house, and it was a very special sandbox for a kid to play in.”

It’s no wonder Dann ended up writing, producing and singing music. “I wrote my first hit when I was 15 for Johnny Nash called 'My Merry-Go-Round.' John Lennon sent me a personal message that it was the greatest song he ever heard.”
His Uncle Kenneth, or as the world knows him, Kenny Rogers, was also a huge influence on his career. “He and I were the first
two related artists to ever be on the Billboard Top 10 at the same time. He had 'Coward of the County' at number five, and I had 'Looks Like Love Again' at number six. He was proud of me.”
Dann’s music is soulful and full of meaning, and he says he finds inspiration wherever he feels connected to God. “My music comes through me, it's not of me. I do not want my music to define my life;

I want my life to define my music. I don't write songs unless they move me and I believe they're going to move somebody else.”
He’s actually thrown some songs away. “Glen Campbell pulled a song of mine out of the garbage, recorded it and had a hit with it,” says Dann. “He told me to never throw away another song until he hears it.”
Dann will also write songs and then put them away for years. He wrote 'Lesson in Love,' around 2010, but only released it last year. “It kept nagging at me and I was also seeing what was going on in the news,” he says. “I felt God telling me it was time to release it."
Some of the other songs that resonate with him are 'Let Go' and 'Be Still and Unlovable.' “Another song, 'It’s Life,' is me coming to terms with life and love,” says Dann. “Then there's a song I wrote while I was in a deep depression called 'When I Hurt.' Writing songs is definitely a healing process for me.”
Although Dann now spends most of his time in Southern California, he travels to the area a few times a year and is contemplating doing one more tour. “I would definitely pay tribute to Kenny during the show,” he says. DannRogers.com

Willow Branch Homes
ARTICLE BY LINDA DOHSE | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
“Willow Branch is a trusted local builder that has grown with integrity and respect over the years. We’re in constant pursuit to build more than homes; we build communities.”
These words, shared by Willow Branch COO Paul Winegar, truly speak to the essence of what Willow Branch Homes is all about. He adds, “Willow Branch has always sought out opportunities to give back to our communities. We were born and raised here, and are completely local so we love supporting our surrounding communities. We’ve participated in smaller events including community sports sponsorships for tee ball teams, and larger events such as donating homes in support of our local children's hospital.”
He adds, “Over the years we have worked with Second Harvest Food Bank, Toys for Tots, I Am Second, My Friend's House, United Way, and Monroe Carrell Jr. Children's Hospital - all wonderful organizations that support our communities. The biggest project we are doing now is the 'I Am Home' project benefiting Monroe Carrell Jr. Children's Hospital. We began the 'I Am Home' contest as a way to give back to our community and after careful thought we chose Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt as the beneficiary,” says Winegar. “We chose Monroe Carell because of their hard work and dedication to healing the children in our area and beyond."

Willow Branch Homes’ impressive community involvement expands over many years of commitment and exemplifies their dedication to the communities in which they build. These heartfelt commitments include:
• Second Harvest. Willow Branch Homes manages food-drive boxes during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays to help nourish local food banks.
• Toys for Tots. Donation boxes are set up at all Willow Branch offices and model homes for their team, clients, and even prospective clients. Donations benefit the Willow Branch mission in their communities.
• United Way. United Way was instrumental in guiding Willow Branch to My Friend's House where they built a new group home for boys in Franklin and surrounding areas. Willow Branch donated all their time and billed only the cost of the building materials to the organization.
• The Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt. The hospital is the sole beneficiary of Willow Branch’s giveaway home project 'I Am Home'. Willow Branch donates 100 percent of building costs and time so Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital receives the maximum benefit from ticket purchasers.
• I Am Second. I Am Second is a Christian outreach nonprofit that assisted with the creation of the 'I Am Home' giveaway project.
In terms of giving back to the communities in which they build, Winegar notes, “We pride ourselves on personal commitment to executing the best processes that inspire and nourish local communities, carrying this through every stage of a build. Willow Branch uses proven methods to execute a high level of customer service backed by a decade of experience in our market. We partner with the homebuyer to curate a personalized design selection process, walking alongside every customer with transparency throughout the building process from start to finish. Every home is a new neighbor that makes Middle Tennessee a great place to live.”
Willow Branch offers a breadth of home types and styles ranging from single-family, condos, townhomes, and custom homes across their nine communities throughout Middle Tennessee. Adds Winegar, “We are not only committed to building beautiful houses with integrity and attention to detail, but building communities that people are proud to call home.”

TYLER HILLMAN TALKS
KITCHEN APPLIANCE STYLE TRENDS
ARTICLE BY LISA VALENTINE PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
With so many options and brands on the market today, when it comes to choosing appliances for your home or business, it can be hard to know where to begin. Appliance pro Tyler Hillman sat down with Franklin Lifestyle to explain the ins and outs of appliance trends.
What started with one location in Birmingham, Alabama in 1997, Hillman, along with his brother, Josh, have grown AllSouth Appliance to serve four states with seven showrooms across the Southeast. As they watched the growth of Nashville, they wanted to be part of the excitement of such a booming city and officially opened the doors to their Nashville showroom in 2022. “We’ve been very appreciative of the warm welcome from several builders and several new
clients already," says Hillman. "We were in Chattanooga for many years and we’re excited to move over to a sister city and we have just really enjoyed getting into the market. We’re looking forward to learning more and building that reputation [in Nashville] that we’ve had elsewhere for going on 27 years now.”
Wanting to serve clients “where they live, work, and play,” they established showrooms in prominent cities as well as in lake and beach towns—such as Panama City and Fort Walton, Florida—and popular lake areas in Alabama and Tennessee— where clients have vacation homes. This allows them to help clients both at home and in their “homes away from home.”
When it comes to trends in appliances, making a splash with color and

stylish accents is a hot trend right now, according to Hillman. He explains that when it comes to black appliances, matte-to-matte finishes are the trend right now, as well as utilizing jewel tones to bring some pop as a statement look. “Jewel tones are still popular as highlight colors of the kitchen. While we don’t see many entire kitchens utilize color in appliances, often there is a focus piece that has color to it,” he says, referring to elements such as the range or the hood.
In some cities, Hillman has even seen the trend of selecting collegiate football colors for outdoor appliances such as grills. While he notes that stainless steel has been the standard for quite a while, people are now starting to mix it with a focal color or adding touches of brass and copper in regard to finishings such as handles on appliances and custom ventilation hoods. “Along with color, there’s been an introduction of mixed metals that’s also been coming for a little while. We’re seeing that drive down beyond the luxury and most expensive product lines, down into the more mainstream product. It is a nice look that is affordable for many people.” MyAllSouth.com
1. PLAY UP A FOCAL POINT
Want some color in your kitchen, but don’t want to overwhelm your space? Choose one appliance in a bold color as a focal point.
2. REMEMBER YOUR TIMELINE
If you’re purchasing multiple new appliances and want a cohesive look, be sure they are all in stock or will arrive on a timeline that works for your project.
3. EMBRACE CUSTOMIZATION
When it comes to making a statement with your appliances, go for customization. Brands of all price points are now offering customizable mix and match accents on appliances.

CATCHING UP WITH Kane Brown
WHY 2023 MIGHT BE HIS BUSIEST YEAR SO FAR
ARTICLE BY MARIA DINOIA | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
Kane Brown is an anomaly. Overcoming a difficult childhood that included both abuse and homelessness, the Tennessee native has clearly risen above it. And enjoying a solidly successful musical career seems to be just the beginning. For starters, he’s the first artist of color to be nominated for the Academy of Country Music Entertainer of the Year award in more than 50 years (since Charlie Pride). The father of two has big plans. He has his own record label, publishing company, brand partnerships, a clothing line and a desire to continue acting. To name just a few. We chatted with Brown in between stops on his Drunk or Dreaming Tour to talk about all the things.
Q: Tell us about the experience of hosting the CMT Awards {last April} for the third time. Do you ever get used to being in front of a live TV audience? Hosting the awards was an amazing experience and it was great to be back in front of live fans again after the past few years. I’ve definitely gotten more comfortable over the years with it and CMT has always made me feel very at home. I think the place I will always be the most comfortable is on stage, but I love the chance to connect with fans in a different way and see all the other artists perform and all bring something to the table.

Q: How did it come to be that your wife Katelyn sang with you on "Thank God"? Was it always the plan?
I’ve always known she was an amazing singer and we knew we would be open to something that was the right thing. There wasn't a rush or any pressure we put on ourselves to make it happen, but we definitely heard the fans always asking for it to happen too. We just wanted to make sure it was the right thing. And when I heard “Thank God” and came home and played it for her, it was undeniable.
Q: Are you surprised by the song's success?
I’m always grateful and never take it for granted, but when we heard the final version of the song- or even when we were in the studio recording it- there was no denying it was special and we hoped the fans would feel the same way. It's all newer to her but I kept telling her, 'This is a huge song.'
Q: You have so much going on – your label, your publishing company Verse2, making your acting debut on CBS’ "Fire Country," clothing line at Rue 21, Kane Crunch Cereal, in addition to a huge music careerhow do you keep it all straight?
I think we all keep it to things that we are passionate about, and I have a great team that I get to work with that I know and trust, and we all have the same vision - but these are things I am passionate about. I created my label and then my publishing company and it's an amazing feeling to watch writers we’ve signed have successes and number one's - that’s a big part of itwanting to help give more people more opportunities to break into it as well. The acting thing I would love to do more of, but I love being on stage and its been amazing to be out on the road again from Australia to back in the U.S. now. I just got back from Stagecoach {where Brown headlined} and we get to be a part of so many shows this year. I just always want to keep moving it forward toward the next thing, but trying to take it day by day.
Q: Then what do you do to relax and unwind?
Family time is always at the top of the list. My daughters surprise me every day with something they will say or do and being around them is what drives me and also makes me slow down and be totally in the moment at the same time. And I’ve started to golf a lot more!
Q: You're on tour through the summer. What's the hardest thing about being on the road?
It's been amazing to be out on the road again and the fans have shown up with so much energy in every city and every night. The week of the CMT awards was the same week we got to headline Bridgestone Arena and it was the first time headlining there andthe first time back playing Nashville in a long time. The crowd was amazing and it was great to have the family here in town, and at the end of the night, we got to go back home.

I’m lucky that our bus and tour is set so that we can take the girls and Kate out on the road and keep us together a lot of the time, but when they aren’t out on the road with me, that is the hardest part about being away.
Q: What's next for you?
We have the rest of the Drunk or Dreaming Tour throughout the summer, including some we haven’t headlined like Fenway {Park} in Boston. I’ve been doing a lot of writing and working on songs for the next project. There’s a lot in the works - I just can't talk about most of it yet! In between it all, taking time to be home and enjoying time off together before we hit the road again, because this area is definitely home.
Q: What is the greatest thing about being a Dad? Everything. But laughing with them and making them laugh.

REDISCOVER NASHVILLE
With New Book 100 Things to Do in Nashville Before You Die, 3rd Edition
ARTICLE BY LISA VALENTINE PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
Whether you’re staying in town this summer and looking to compile your dream summer bucket list, or you need to update your list of favorite go-to spots to give out of town guests an authentic “Nashville experience,” Tom Adkinson’s new book, 100 Things to Do in Nashville Before You Die, 3rd Edition has you covered. Having been in Music City since his family moved here in the late ‘50s, longtime Nashville resident Adkinson, has had a front row seat to experience how the city has grown and evolved over the years. As a former assistant travel editor at Southern Living and now currently the travel writer at the Knoxville Daily Sun , Adkinson has once again put pen to paper in this third edition of his book to showcase some Nashville favorites.
OUR TOWN | ARTS + CULTURE
86
“I want people to explore and enjoy Nashville,” says Adkinson. “The book is a guide for tourists, newcomers and even natives. I love it when a native Nashvillian says to me, ‘I didn’t know about that place’ or ‘I’ve been meaning to go to that venue, and now I will.’”
Divided into well thought-out sections, this book categorizes some of the best things to see and do in Nashville. Adkinson also includes sections that feature “Activities By Season,” as well as suggested itineraries based on a variety of themes such as “Date Night,” “Right Downtown,” and “Let History Enlighten You.”
With everything from a list of must-try meat-and-three restaurants to some of the best stargazing events, art crawls, and historical landmarks, 100 Things to Do in Nashville Before You Die, 3rd Edition has a little bit of something for everyone. “There are five categories – food and drink, music and entertainment, sports and recreation, culture and history, and shopping,” Adkinson explains. “The book leads you to Nashville’s oldest restaurant, plenty of options for good music (including two
places to howl at the moon), places for wilderness hikes while still in the city, the site of the worst train wreck in U.S. history, and great places for Nashville gifts and souvenirs.”
In addition to discovering some spots to explore around the city, readers will learn some history and Nashville fun facts while reading this book, such as the story behind how Nashville’s hockey team got its name.
Whether you’re a Nashville native, new to town, or just visiting Music City, 100 Things to Do in Nashville Before You Die, 3rd Edition is a must-read guide to Nashville fun and culture.
100 Things to Do in Nashville Before You Die, 3rd Edition is available at Barnes & Noble, Target, Walmart, Amazon. com and wherever books are sold.

The Name Says It All
HOW TWO NASHVILLE DADS BECAME INFLUENCERS IN THE BOURBON WORLD
If you think Dads Drinking Bourbon (DDB) is an exercise in parenting gone awry, you really need to subscribe to the popular podcast. It’ll make you #rethinkhowyoudrink. Yes, it’s an escape for the patriarch who’s not too far removed from those days when responsibilities were more of an option than an obligation. But it’s mostly an homage to the centuries-old tradition of bourbon as a facilitator of meaningful camaraderie and conversation that is unrivaled by other adult beverages. The show is, simultaneously, smart without being snooty, silly without being sordid. “Bourbon is about relationships,” says John Edwards who, along with Zeke Baker, is co-founder/creator/host of DDB. “I’ve had good whiskey but what I remember most are the people I was with, the laughs we had and the stories that were told.”
Their story is a great example. They met years ago when they were on the same kickball team and developed a bond over their common interest in bourbon. When fatherhood intervened, the days of kickball and nights out with the guys

came to an end. Then one evening, while rocking his baby girl to sleep, Edwards discovered a world of bourbon on Instagram. He told Baker that they should start a blog.
“Zeke never wrote so that was short lived, but it got in front of bourbon people,” says Edwards. “So we started a show on Instagram live on Sundays at 9 p.m. after the kids went to bed. Just sipping bourbon while talking about our families, giving each other parenting advice. Just some guy talk once a week.”
That was in 2016. It wasn’t long before followers requested a podcast and the first Dads Drinking Bourbon show dropped in 2017. Now as the Dads close-in on 500 episodes and 70,000 followers, Dads Drinking Bourbon is an established brand in the universe of bourbon-focused podcasts.
“From the start we wanted to be honest so that our audience can trust what we say,” says Edwards. “Our show is for the consumer. There is nothing that separates us from any other bourbon fan other than we have microphones.”
Of course, what they do behind the mic sets them apart. They produce two weekly shows: a 30-minute review of a new release and about an hour-or-so guest interview. Shows begin with good-natured jabs and harmless insults, before the Dads delve into the day’s topic. The Nashville-based duo (Edwards lives in Franklin) does not accept sponsorships from distilleries because doing so would compromise their integrity.
“We will tell you whether or not we like what we’re tasting,” says Edwards. “And it’s difficult for anyone to really be a bourbon ‘expert’ because everyone’s palate is different. I’m an expert on my palate. But what I enjoy might not be something Zeke likes.”
DDB has also provided the duo with a platform for giving back to their community. They’ve partnered with bourbon-based charities to donate more than $200,000 to causes like Drams ‘N Jams/Folds Of Honor Tennessee and St. Jude.
The podcast is available on all major platforms including Apple, Google Play, Spotify and iHeart Radio. Follow Dads Drinking Bourbon on Instagram @dads drinkingbourbon or at DadsDrinkingBourbon.com

Great Rates. Guaranteed.
When It Comes To Finding The Best Rates For All Types Of Mortgages, Justin Lee Makes The Numbers Count
Justin Lee has been crunching numbers so that they work in his clients’ favor since he started working in the mortgage industry. “I like to help people but I also enjoy working with numbers so, for me, mortgages are a good blend of both,” says Lee. “It feels good helping the customer get to the finish line and into the home they want.”
As Vice President of Mortgage Lending in the Brentwood office of Chicago-based Guaranteed Rate, Lee leads his own team of underwriters and assistants as they serve clients by drawing upon the resources of one of the nation’s largest retail mortgage lenders.
Lee grew up in Saudi Arabia as both of his parents were engineers for an American-owned oil company. “I loved growing up in Saudi,” he says. “Our subdivision was designed like something you’d see in California with a hodgepodge of Americans, Canadians and Brits living there.” Lee and his family would return to the states for about a month each summer to visit family in Alabama and Tennessee. He says the desert heat of the Arabian Peninsula is less taxing than the muggy conditions of the Southeastern United States.
He returned permanently in 1999 to attend boarding school at McCallie in Chattanooga. After graduation he attended UT-Knoxville for a year before transferring to Belmont where he earned a degree in economics and business in 2007. He’s been in the mortgage business ever since. “I got into it at a young age, and I was always 20 years younger than everyone, though not anymore!” he jokes. “Time flies.”

Same-Day Mortgage
Accredited W2 borrowers can apply and qualify for a mortgage on the same day. The online application automatically pulls the credit report, then it goes to Justin for structuring before he sends it to an underwriter for approval. This product works well for just about anyone, including first-time home buyers looking for a conventional loan.
FINANCIAL BUZZ | FINANCE + LEGAL SERVICES

Jumbo Mortgage
A jumbo mortgage is a financing structure that is typically used to purchase larger properties or luxury homes in high-end real estate markets. These loans exceed the limits set by the Federal Housing Finance Agency, and therefore, can’t be guaranteed or securitized by government-backed enterprises like Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac. Justin can shop over a dozen options to secure the best rate for his clients. Jumbo loans work well for affluent self-employed people who need more creative loan options.
Investment Homes & Second Properties
Lee’s analytical skills align well with higher-end clients and business owners who are in the market for investment properties and second homes. “A lot of people are buying second homes, especially in Florida, and I’m licensed throughout the Southeast,” says Lee. “These clients have individual scenarios that vary widely from most mortgage customers. Not every loan officer has the experience to analyze that type of cash flow and to put together a loan that meets their needs.”
Traditional Loans
Justin Lee and Guaranteed Rate continue to offer traditional FHA, VA and conventional loans as demand remains strong for these products. “There are still a lot of people who put a lot of money down for a traditional loan,” says Lee. Anyone who has good credit and is below the normal loan limit of $726,200 is a good candidate for traditional or conventional loans.

CLEANING WITH
When Daron Farrar started working for Molly Maid in 1993, he found both a lifelong career and a wife. “My mom and uncle started the one in the Franklin area, and I worked there off-and-on starting in high school,” he says. “Maricela, my now wife, worked there as well.” Later his father would also become involved with the franchise.
Over the years, Daron has performed many of the roles in the business, from everyday cleaner to management. In 2020, he and Maricela, who live in Franklin with their children, 16-year-old Chris and 11-year-old Isabella, bought Molly Maid of S. Davidson, Williamson, and Maury Counties from his parents.
Its main focus is on residential cleaning. “Most of our clients get their houses cleaned every week or two, which frees up their time to do other things with their families,” says Daron. “We also do a lot of deep cleanings for special occasions or when someone is moving into or out of a house. We can do small commercial jobs as well, as long as they can be done during regular business hours.”

WHAT FAVORITE QUOTE, ADVICE OR MOTTO HAS INSPIRED YOU TO ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS?
My favorite quote is, "The squeaky wheel gets the oil." I first heard the quote from my manager, Maggie Jones, when I was employed with Xerox Business Services in 1995. The quote taught me that closed mouths don't get fed. Problem-solving and resolutions can’t be completed sitting in silence. It taught me to speak up when there are issues that need to be acknowledged, and let your requests be known when attempting to achieve goals in life.
WHAT IS SOMETHING THAT SURPRISED YOU WHEN YOU SET OUT TO FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS?
I was surprised to discover how good my management skills were in starting and running a business. I never doubted that I could do it, but some of the attributes in management came naturally to me. It was just a matter of learning the processes and having the discipline to stay consistent.
WHAT WOULD YOU MAKE HAPPEN, IF YOU HAD ONE WISH THAT COULD BE GRANTED?
If I had one wish, it would be to remove all the evil from this cruel world we live in.

WHAT FAVORITE QUOTE, ADVICE OR MOTTO HAS INSPIRED YOU TO ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS?
I grew up as a fan of Evel Knievel. I had a poster of him on my bedroom wall. There was a statement on the poster that read, "It's better to take a chance in life to win a victory or suffer defeat even though scarred by failure...than it is to live in the shadow of life as some do, never knowing a victory or defeat because they have not the guts to try either!" I always read this for inspiration. I still have the poster to this day.
WHAT IS SOMETHING THAT SURPRISED YOU WHEN YOU SET OUT TO FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS?
I never dreamed I would be able to work closely with so many of my favorite recording artists who I grew up listening to, and that I’d get to be instrumental in keeping their memories and music alive for new generations.
WHAT WOULD YOU MAKE HAPPEN, IF YOU HAD ONE WISH THAT COULD BE GRANTED?
My one wish would be to end animal abuse.

WHAT FAVORITE QUOTE, ADVICE OR MOTTO HAS INSPIRED YOU TO ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS?
I can’t tell you where this came from, but it’s so true: “Happy is the man who has found his work.” That is me. I have been so blessed to have a joy of teaching and working with children, teaching subjects I enjoy, particularly local history. It’s even more rewarding now because children who I taught in seventh through ninth grade are still coming to me with questions. Many of them are doing their own genealogy. I look forward every morning when I get up and think, “What am I going to do today?’
WHAT IS SOMETHING THAT SURPRISED YOU WHEN YOU SET OUT TO FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS?
I grew up with my grandmother. She took care of me when I was little, and I’ve always had a warm spot for ‘great old ladies.’ I’ve had some great friendships with older women, including my grandmother who told me stories about her mother and the Civil War. That got me interested in history. In my experience, I’ve found that older ladies were the keepers of history that I wanted to know but that couldn’t be found in archives. Women have a way of sharing information that you don’t get anywhere else.
WHAT WOULD YOU MAKE HAPPEN, IF YOU HAD ONE WISH THAT COULD BE GRANTED?
I’m pretty content and I think I’ve gotten all I deserve. Particularly for Franklin, I hope that the newcomers, who have so far shown an interest in our history, will continue to appreciate the history that was here before they came.

WHAT FAVORITE QUOTE, ADVICE OR MOTTO HAS INSPIRED YOU TO ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS?
I collect quotations, and I’m probably up to 50,000 of them. One of the best quotations came from my father. He was a refrigeration guy and a very good father. One time he saw me wearing a name tag, and he came up to me, took the name tag off and put it in my pocket. He said, “Boy, if you have to tell folks who you are, you ain’t.” That has stuck with me. On his deathbed, he apologized for not being a good father, even though he was. His last words to me – I can hear them like it was yesterday – were, “I thought you needed a kick in the a** and all you needed was a pat on the back.” That taught me that you need to be positive with everybody you come across, everybody! There are good things about everybody. Find them, and celebrate them. That’s what we do on the radio, we help people celebrate.
WHAT IS SOMETHING THAT SURPRISED YOU WHEN YOU SET OUT TO FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS?
I got into radio at age 14. Mama took me to work and picked me up at night because I couldn’t drive. I don’t know whether I have a broadcast-worthy voice or not, but I’ve had this voice since then. My parents told me, “Don’t turn your back on the gifts that God gave you.” At one point, I wanted to go to law school, but after paying my way through college by working at the Franklin radio station, I was approached about a full-time job, and I decided well, it’s never too late to do law school, I’ll try this. I was hired to do sales, the morning show, sports, and to sit in for the newsman when he was sick or on vacation. I eventually led a group and purchased that radio station, that’s now WAKM. I spent fifty years being there, showing up, and eventually sold it. I was very shy but not in the studio, and I thought I could do anything. I learned that if I made the slightest mistake in facts, the phones would start to ring. I learned I had to do better, there were actually people listening!
WHAT WOULD YOU MAKE HAPPEN, IF YOU HAD ONE WISH THAT COULD BE GRANTED?
Affordable housing. I came up in Franklin, in a generation that could afford to live in their hometown. Our town was Mayberry, we had two cops and they got off at five o’clock. I’m optimistic, even though so many people are moving here and housing prices have gone up, that we can find a way for housing to be affordable for the folks who grow up here and want to stay.

WHAT FAVORITE QUOTE, ADVICE OR MOTTO HAS INSPIRED YOU TO ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS?
My mentor as a young adult would always tell me, “God will never give you a task to do without also giving you the resources to do it.” You may be called to develop a program, build a building, help a family in crisis. You might ask, ‘But how can I help if I don't have the resources to do it?’ This is how you begin: Do what you can, and God will provide the rest. Do your part and begin the journey. Once you demonstrate that you are willing to do your part, God won’t leave you hanging.
WHAT IS SOMETHING THAT SURPRISED YOU WHEN YOU SET OUT TO FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS?
Like parenting, the work I do with FrankTown has been both the most challenging and the most rewarding at the same time. Seeing the challenges and hurdles the underserved children that we serve face every day is heart wrenching. Many live in broken homes and have little to no resources. Providing food, affordable housing,
and finding a job is often problematic. But to see these children that are eager to learn and work, who ask for nothing more than a tool, and ask for training on how to use it…they are willing to work! They are only asking for training on ‘how.’ They inspire me.
WHAT WOULD YOU MAKE HAPPEN, IF YOU HAD ONE WISH THAT COULD BE GRANTED?
I would wish for the opportunity to tell the story of FrankTown to everyone in Williamson County. To be able to share the problems our impoverished children face every day, the opportunities we give them to learn a skill or trade, and then see how they are willing to do the work. I’d like for everyone to hear about them succeeding in spite of the disadvantages they face, how they go to college, trade school, or go directly into the job market. They break the cycle of generational poverty. They learn a work ethic and take pride in what they can produce. I think if the community could hear and see the results we‘re having, the funding and volunteers would follow.

AN EAST TENNESSEE ESCAPE

Sometimes you need to step away from reality, away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and the mountain of problems big and small that come along with it. That’s how I found myself at Windy Hill Farm – a cozy farm resort tucked in the hills of East Tennessee’s Loudon County. I went in frazzled and drained, and left recharged and reinvigorated.
The property, which spans 650 acres and borders Watts Bar Lake, has been in Steven Brewington’s family since the early 2000s, originally operating as a working cattle farm and a destination for quail hunting. But in recent years, Steven knew the farm needed to be shared, and the idea for a luxury respite was born.

Lodging is seamlessly integrated into the grounds, with a collection of well-appointed cabins and a separate multi-room lodge folded into the farm’s rolling hills and flourishing gardens. The family’s original five-bedroom farmhouse is also available to rent. I stayed in a water tower cabin, which exudes luxury thanks to its floor-to-ceiling windows and a sitting area made for overlooking the property. At the center of it all is a stunning reception area with a downstairs restaurant, Wilder, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner daily.
Windy Hill Farm is all-inclusive, and the meals alone are enough to guarantee repeat visitors. Executive chef Ben Warwick has curated a menu merging time-honored Southern methods with subtle Caribbean flare, sourcing as many ingredients as possible from the surrounding grounds. Every meal, from the quail to the smash burger, catfish sandwich and bourbon-soaked chocolate cake, was worth the price of the stay alone.
A highlight from my visit, I had the opportunity to spend time in the kitchen alongside chef Ben learning the methods and trade secrets behind the Wilder menu. A cooking class is just one of the activities offered onsite, ranging from complimentary options like yard

games, nature trails and mountain biking to guided adventures like archery, beekeeping, sporting clays and kayaking. If you want to try them all, an activities pass is available for $125 per person, or activities can be booked a la carte. Topping the must-do list on my next visit is the guided wine hike, which, as it sounds, brings guests on a wine tasting experience through the farm’s nature trails, stopping to explore the flavor profiles and natural notes that come through each varietal.
While the activities and meals blew me away on their own, it was the small moments that made my
trip most memorable: waking up with the sunrise and catching the faint outline of the Smoky Mountains in the distance, wandering through the garden and being handed fresh-picked crimson clover for my room, hitting a bullseye with a bow and arrow, spending evenings around the campfire (book and wine in-hand), and capping my visit listening to live bluegrass music with the Windy Hill team who were starting to feel more like friends.

Get A Taste Of Italy In Tennessee
ARTICLE BY KELLIE WALTON | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
A cooking class is one of the most popular activities to do on any given vacation –whether you’re in Naples or Napa Valley, joining a local expert in their own kitchen, learning time-honored techniques and using locally-sourced fresh ingredients is an immersive experience that’s sure to leave you with valuable lessons to incorporate in your own kitchen.
But what if I told you that experience is attainable right here in Franklin? Thanks to Derek Chirico and his company, Italy from Scratch, it is.
“I do an all hands-on cooking class in my home,” Derek says. “People come in and they’re served wine, we have Italian music playing, I go over the recipes with them and we make a four-course meal.”

Chef Derek Chirico hosts an Italian cooking class in his home
Growing up in Rhode Island, Derek was used to having an Italian eatery on every corner, and with a tight-knit Italian family of his own, pasta dinners were a Sunday tradition. Now his family owns the travel company Italy with Bella, which has led him to visiting the country frequently.
A five-hour cooking class during a visit to Cortona, Tuscany, inspired Derek to launch a similar concept close to home. He trained under Tuscan chef Ryan Hanley, and soon, Italy from Scratch was born in Franklin.
“Everything I make uses simple, Italian-inspired ingredients,” Derek adds. Once the cooking is complete – which includes homemade pasta and cheese, up to five appetizers, a meat dish and a dessert – Derek serves each course in a private dining area with paired wines, and a digestif to close the experience.
While many dishes may be difficult to replicate due to geography alone, achieving more authentic Italian cuisine starts with the ingredients: look for fresh, in-season and organic options when possible. Derek prefers shopping at the Franklin farmer’s market for meats and fresh, local vegetables.
“If you’re making a ragu and you get cheap tomatoes instead of ones that are quality, they are going to have a more acidic flavor, and that little bit of change can ruin the whole dish,” Derek says. “Even when I use wine in a sauce, you have to make sure you’re using the correct type of wine. Don’t cut corners. It will change the whole outcome of the dish.”
The ingredients steer the menu for Italy from Scratch classes, which vary based on season and class size. Both private and group-format classes are available to book, ranging anywhere

from two to 10 guests. The current menu includes dishes like strawberry goat cheese bruschetta, authentic Tuscan meat ragu, saltimbocca alla Romana and vanilla bean panna cotta.
One of Derek’s favorite dishes is also on the menu – a duck and fennel ragu. “It’s not very gamey because it stews in white wine, broth and fennel, and it’s one of my favorite things to eat in Italy.”
As for the greatest pasta dish he’s ever had? Wild boar ragu, found in the Umbria region of Italy bordering
Tuscany (if you’re interested in trying it yourself, Italy with Bella can help get you there).
Italy from Scratch classes last anywhere from three to four hours and include lessons, hands-on cooking with provided ingredients, a served four-course meal, wine pairings and plenty of fun.
“It’s really enjoyable. It’s not too stressful,” Derek says. “A lot of people come in thinking they don’t know how to cook, but it’s not anything you have to stress about. It’s more of a fun cooking experience.” ItalyFromScratch.com

Spreading Love Like Butter
MEET FRANKLIN’S OWN, BROTHER HENRY
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY KAREN CREASON
Brother Henry Hardeman is a remarkable man who has dedicated his life to spreading kindness wherever he goes. He has faced many challenges throughout his life, but his resilience, strength, and unwavering commitment to serving others have made him a beloved figure in the Franklin community.
Born and raised in Franklin, Brother Henry has been a witness to its many changes. He attended Johnson Elementary School, a segregated elementary school in the 1950s, and later attended Franklin High School, his freshman year being the first year FHS was desegregated. Despite the racial tensions of the time, Henry stayed out of the fray by playing the bass drum in the high school band. Notes Henry, “It was being a part of the Franklin Band that we got used to one another. When you're in the band, it doesn't matter what color you are, you're all working together to make music."
During his high school years, Henry worked as a cafeteria worker in the hospital on West Main Street, obtaining special permission due to his young age. He continued to work there for 19 years, only leaving when the hospital relocated.
Henry felt called to ministry in the 1970s and attended seminary school to become a minister, earning him the name “Brother Henry.” He started a Vacation Bible School for local children which continued for many years and started street preaching as a way to help the Franklin community.
In the mid-1980s, Brother Henry began working at the Franklin Theatre, a job he held for a total of
25 years. During his time there, he became a treasured fixture in the community, greeting everyone who came through the doors and making them feel welcome. But his work at the theatre was just one aspect of his community service. He was also the "Spirit Coach" for the Franklin High School Band and the BGA Baseball and Basketball teams, imparting pearls of wisdom from his life to the younger generations.
Always quick with a story or a piece of advice, Brother Henry once asked the FHS Band to “be butter” while en route to the BOA Grand Nationals. He spoke of how great butter is when it melts and spreads all over and likened butter to warmth, love and kindness. He asked the team to "be butter" - to be warm and spread love and kindness to each other and their competitors; putting aside differences and working together. This lesson has become a cornerstone of Brother Henry's philosophy, and he believes that no act of kindness is ever too small. He encourages everyone to “be butter” for others and for themselves.
Now in his 70s, Brother Henry faces health challenges due to diabetes and relies on an electric wheelchair to get around. But this setback hasn’t dampened his spirits or his commitment to “spreading butter.” “Now I have to sit but I still get out and people watch, get acquainted with visitors and residents, joke, laugh, have fun and make them feel at home.” Brother Henry notices the number of past visitors who have now become residents and how

people are more willing to stop and chat or offer a hug. Brother Henry can oftentimes be found “spreading butter” at his favorite Franklin haunts - Merridee’s, McCreary’s, Puckett’s, and the Visitor Center. On nice days, he can often be found sitting along Main Street listening to the “best street musicians anywhere.”
When asked about the changes to Franklin since his childhood, Brother Henry is quick to laugh and quips “It is a bit different now from back in the day but change is good.” He notices positive changes in attitudes and downtown Franklin itself, stating, "I am glad to see the improvements and people are beginning to recognize and save our community."
Despite facing numerous challenges throughout his life, Brother Henry remains a shining example of what it means to live a life of purpose and service. He is a testament to the resilience and strength of the Franklin community, having lived through, and contributed to, its evolution over the years. Through his work at the Franklin Theatre, his ministry, and his spirit coaching, Brother Henry has left an indelible mark on the community of Franklin and touched the lives of countless individuals and continues to do so, spreading his message of kindness and love like butter.

Perfecting the Way We All Hear Music
THE MAN BEHIND THE SOUND OF MUSIC
ARTICLE BY SEAN O'KEEFE
PHOTOGRAPHY BY JAMES COOL
You have to look no further than Colin Leonard’s Sing Mastering Instagram page to realize that he is single-handedly completely perfecting the music of the world! His client list reads like the weekly top forty with chart-topping success after chart-topping success. Albums and singles sold in the U.S. with Colin Leonard listed in the credits as a mastering engineer total over 100 million in sales. This master sound engineer is rethinking the way we all hear music! “I love being able to work in so many genres,” says Leonard. Justin Bieber, Paul McCartney, Lil Wayne, Migos, Megan Thee Stallion, H.E.R., Dua Lipa, Cardi B, and Beyoncé are but a few of the recording artists that have trusted Colin Leonard to take their music to the next level. “I don’t think mastering is genre-specific,” says Leonard. “It’s really about making the music connect with the listener and making it sound as emotional as possible.”
Colin began playing instruments at about twelve years old. With a concert pianist grandmother, an exceptional music teacher, and a mom that was super supportive; it was easy to see that music was what he wanted to do. “I wasn’t the biggest fan of piano

lessons,” says Leonard, “but when I started playing drums it was really fun.” Colin studied classical guitar at University of the Pacific and then went to Full Sail University for audio engineering. “My band recorded a three-song demo while at Full Sail and I spent the whole summer after college mastering it myself.” Around 2005, Colin started doing mastering on a professional level, “That’s when it really hit me, that this was my thing.”
Today things are quite different. Colin Leonard’s process is quite simple, “at this point I just listen to it and I have a picture of what I want it to sound like in my head. You keep adjusting and adjusting until it hits a certain point where you can feel it and your head starts bobbing a little bit. It is really about how the song makes you feel more than anything else,” says Leonard. “I try to apply that to every song in a master.” His process is tried and true and delivers the best-sounding music anywhere. “I am constantly listening to things I’ve recently worked on,” said Leonard, “always comparing how things sound on multiple playback and streaming services. I like to make sure that it sounds good in the car and when you play it on a cheap Bluetooth speaker or on your phone.”
“I think that music is a great escape for people, including myself. It can take you somewhere else and make you feel all kinds of different ways,” says Leonard.

The Perfect Steak
ARTICLE BY CASEY WEBER, TALL GRASS MEAT COMPANY
Nothing describes summer better than a good cookout! And what is a cookout without a good, quality steak and the perfect grilling recipe?
1. Thaw and acclimate the steak. For searing to occur, the proteins in steak need to be heated to at least 310°F. Tossing cold meat onto a hot grill lowers the temperature and can prevent a crust from forming, so it’s important that any frozen steaks are thawed completely before cooking.
2. Salt your steak 30-45 minutes before grilling. This causes the salt to draw moisture from within the steak up to the surface, where it dissolves the salt and creates a brine that gets reabsorbed into the steak where it breaks down tough connective tissues.
3. Oil the grate on the grill, not the steak. Use tongs and a paper towel dipped in vegetable oil to lube your grates.
4. Manage your heat well. Remember that your grill needs to be hot for your steak to get a good sear. But if it’s hot enough to cause your oil to smoke, it’s too hot.
5. Use the 60/40 rule. The best-tasting steaks are seared on both sides and cooked evenly in the middle. The simplest way to do that is to only flip your steak once. The 60/40 rule suggests that 60% of your cook time should be spent on one side, and 40% on the other.
6. Keep the lid closed. It may be tempting to peek, but trust the experts and keep it shut! Opening the lid makes your grill lose heat, which makes steaks cook unevenly.
7. Check for doneness. A meat thermometer will give you the most accurate temperature reading:
• Rare: 120°F
• Medium Rare: 130°F
• Medium: 140°F
• Medium Well: 150°F
• Well: 160°F
8. Let your steak rest. Pull your steaks from the grill once they’re cooked to 5-10 degrees below your target temperature and rest for 10-15 minutes.

LEARN ABOUT HIS FAMILY TREE
Family heritage websites can offer insight into dad’s past and be an interesting way to study the history of your family. Present Dad with a report on his ancestors or dig in together!
PLAN A STAYCATION
You don’t need to go very far to have a great time with Dad! Explore a new neck of your own woods with a family staycation. You can go out on the town, stay at a fancy hotel and maybe even enjoy some room service!
GO BIRD WATCHING
Lay out a blanket in your backyard and grab your binoculars for a peaceful, naturefilled day. Make a list of how many different kinds of birds you see and guess if you can identify them.
GO BOWLING
Bowling is a timeless classic Dad is sure to enjoy. Bonus if the bowling alley has an arcade, chicken wings and Dad’s favorite beverage of choice.
PLAY FRISBEE GOLF AS A FAMILY
Find a local frisbee golf course and grab a slot for the family to play. This activity is fun for both young and old and helps you take advantage of being in the beautiful outdoors together.

SPOIL HIM WITH BREAKFAST IN BED
Breakfast in bed isn’t just for Mother’s Day. Dads can enjoy it too! Whip up some of his favorite brunch treats and start Father’s Day off the right way.
06 09
HAVE A WINE AND PAINT NIGHT
Sign up for an artistic experience at a local wine and paint shop so Dad can let his creative side show and you can have a custom piece of art for years to come.
TACKLE A TASK TOGETHER
Is Dad a hands-on guy? Why not spend the day constructing a tree house or painting a birdhouse? Or better yet, help him organize the garage or start a garage redesign.
07 10
DO A FITNESS CLASS TOGETHER
Consider signing him up for a fitness class together. Whether he likes cycling, boxing or HIIT, encourage him to be adventurous and try something new.
08
COOK SOMETHING ADVENTUROUS
If some of Dad’s role models include Gordon Ramsay and Bobby Flay, consider thinking outside the box and create a meal with something you wouldn’t usually go for like bison burgers or grilled octopus tentacles. Tackling a complex recipe may seem challenging but the memories and the meal will be worth it.
11
HAVE AN OUTDOOR FAMILY MOVIE NIGHT
If one of Dad’s favorite pastimes is binging the Star Wars saga over and over again, how about setting up a family movie night from your own backyard? Hang a white bed sheet and project a movie onto the screen via a projector. TREND SETTER | LIFE + CULTURE 136

Harken back to Dad’s childhood with a specialty kit of legos. Embark on a family project of helping Dad build models of favorite movie props like the Death Star or Hogwarts castle.
GO AXE-THROWING
Axe-throwing venues are still going strong across the country. Make an evening of it and practice your throwing skills!

The ‘New’ Indianapolis this Summer
OLD SPACES TURNED NEW
A city known for fast cars and blockbuster events has also gained acclaim for a flourishing culinary and brewing scene, thriving cultural institutions, cool neighborhoods, and so much more. And just since 2020, Indy has seen several old spaces in the city turned new again. In addition, for the past decade, Indy has been working underground to redirect the tunnel system to make the river that runs through downtown recreationally clean. Simultaneously, 58 miles of the White River are undergoing one of the country’s largest river redevelopment plans and just this past spring, the first piece to the puzzle was completed. Indy now has their first livery in the city with a fleet of 50-60 paddleboards, kayaks and canoes. VisitIndy.com
