On the morning following his 2005 high school graduation, Joey Carter drove to Atlanta and went to work immediately for Norfolk Southern railway. He trained to become a conductor and spent most of the next decade driving trains between Birmingham and Atlanta.

His journey included two years of double-backs (alternating shifts of eight hours on, eight hours off) without a day off.

“You work uneven schedules and you have to be attentive,” says Carter.

“Those factors translated well to my next endeavor.”

An endeavor that never would have happened had his transport career not gone off the rails. At issue was Carter’s new-found fondness for real estate, a side hustle that required his full attention on weekends and was frowned upon by his bosses.

According to Carter, that led to “a mutually agreed upon decision to fire me. And that was OK. I was already doing real estate full time.”

Carter earned his real estate license in 2009 and focused on residential property in and around his hometown of Jasper, Alabama. It wasn’t long after his departure from the railway that he became a top producer and by 2016 he formed his own firm, Joseph Carter Realty (JCR).

Today it is one of the region’s top outfits with annual sales of nearly $250 million and offices throughout Alabama, from Huntsville to Orange Beach. Carter is directly involved with each branch but focuses most of his energy on Smith Lake, a serene lakefront community about 2½ hours from Nashville.

“I love the waterfront lifestyle, being on the lake with friends and family,” says Carter. “We have clients in the Nashville area who find that it’s an ideal location for a second home. is a powerful tool that builds emotional intelligence (EQ) and enriches relationships across all arenas.

What is the Check In? The Check In is an intentional time to pause, reflect, identify how we are feeling then share our observations with others. A foundational tenet of emotional intelligence is self-awareness and the Check In is a key building block for EQ growth.

Benefits of the Check In The daily Check In builds community and normalizes feelings to help us get comfortable using emotional language. Neuropsychological research shows that naming feelings helps clear our minds for better decision making and reduces stress levels. Naming our feelings builds the connection between our “downstairs” and “upstairs” parts of our brains.

The “upstairs” brain is where higher level mental processes happen as well as the utilization of empathy. Many Fortune 500 companies (Google, REI, DreamWorks, etc.) recognize that empathy and emotional intelligence are the essential skills found in their top employees.

How to do the Check In There are many ways to do the Check In. Print several feelings charts with emojis and emotional language to have on hand. Play “Rate Your Day” on a scale of 1 – 10. Play “High/Low” sharing the high and low points of the day and how you felt about each. Use metaphors – “I’m feeling like a thunderstorm right now.” The purpose of the Check In is not to create a dialogue but rather an opportunity to slow down, reflect and build listening skills without judgement. Everyone takes a turn while others listen and do not interrupt. A simple, “thank you” to the person is all that is needed.

he found his way back to art. “I stopped painting in 1969 and picked it up 46 years later,” he says.

Today at the age of 71, his works can be found all over Tennessee. The Steinway Piano Gallery in Nashville has “Pure Nashville” and the “Big Band Series,” and the Nina Kuzina Gallery, also in Nashville, has “Jazz Trio,” “Selmer Soprano” and “Lyric Typewriter.” These are all available for purchase. Belmont University is also working with him to feature his art in their music buildings.

“When I hear music, I see art and when I see art, I hear music,” he says. “For example, ‘Field of Strings’ is a very detailed painting. I wanted it to be a symphony.”

JD and his wife, Chris, have lived in Franklin for 21 years, but his roots have been in Miami since the 1960s. “So my style is a bit ‘South Beach’ and brightly colored.” JDWiseArt.com

While Don “JD” Wise is well known for his unique acrylic-on-canvas paintings featuring fun and jazzy musical instruments, his road to becoming an artist has taken a very circuitous path. His first painting was at the age of 16 and won a Scholastic Award for the state of Florida, where he was living at the time.

“I had to take an art class and the teacher made me do a painting,” he says. “I did one of my trumpet, and she entered it for the award without me even knowing.”

When his father told him there wasn’t any money in art, he put it on the back burner. “I went into music, where there was even less money, but I wanted to be a great trumpet player. I became the first American in a Cuban salsa band in the United States.”

Through the years, JD has worked in orchestra production, spent time as a school band director, and become a very successful book publisher. Eventually,

“I worked at Estée Lauder for about 25 years, gaining amazing experience in many different departments,” Aerin shares. “I was always doing interviews on what was in my makeup bag and the items I couldn’t live without. When ground was broken for Shelton Square in the Blackman area of Murfreesboro in 2018, the goal was to not only build lovely homes, but also to create a place where homeowners could get together to form friendships and lasting memories.

“The developers, Bob and Marie Parks, who own Parks 360 Development, wanted to make sure that this could be a community that families could enjoy,” says Lisa Underwood, Shelton Square’s marketing director.

“One thing I really find amazing is what a close-knit community it is. We provide things for them to do together, like Easter egg hunts, Halloween fun, and other family events, but the homeowners also do things together on their own.”

There’s a community Facebook page inviting people to events like Christmas cookie swaps, wreath making, and a book club. “They’ve really made the community their own and it's just a really neat place to live,” she says.

There’s one young couple from India who, says Lisa, go to most of the events. “They’re excited to be a part of the community. They really didn’t know a lot of people here, so it's nice for them to have that community spirit.”

There’s another extended family who all live in the development. “The parents, their daughter and her family, and their son and his family, all live there,” she says. “The brother and sister live right next door to each other so all the cousins can play together.”

"Although Murfreesboro is a thriving part of Middle Tennessee, it’s traditionally been more affordable than being in the heart of Nashville," explains Parks 360

president, Davis Lamb. "And Blackman is one of the up and coming areas of Murfreesboro. It has great schools, and it's very convenient to the major interstates. It's a beautiful area,” he says. “There are rolling hills and a lot of open space and greenness.”

Of the projected 750 homes, approximately 50 percent have been built. “In Shelton Square, we have five different home product types ranging anywhere from more of a first-time buyer home, all the way up to custom homes. Another goal of Bob and Marie Parks, when they created this development, was that it would be kind of a community for every stage of life. So you might have a young couple or a young single person move in and then they start a family and move up to a bigger house in the same community. That was their vision and it's actually happening,” says Lamb.

The smaller homes are known as the Village series, and then the next step up is the Cottage series. The larger Retreat series would be more for a family buyer.

“After that, we have the Sanctuary series, and those are about 3000 square feet with many amenities and top of the line finishes and products,” says Davis. “Our last are our Estate series, and those are the largest with many custom features.”

The resort feel of the community is accentuated by family and kiddie pools. “We also have a playground, a half-basketball court, walking trails and a dog park,” he says. DAVIS HOUSE PROVIDES CHILD ABUSE ADVOCACY AND COMMUNITY EDUCATION

According to the National Children's Alliance, more than 600,000 children are abused in the U.S. each year. That's a staggering number. But child advocacy centers, supporters of child-focused programs that investigate, prosecute, and treat child abuse are here to help. In fact, child welfare authorities ensure the safety of more than 7 million kids. That's where Tennessee's Davis House comes in.

The Davis House, established in 1999, has a mission to provide investigative, advocacy, family support, and therapeutic services to children who have experienced sexual or severe physical abuse or some other traumatic event, as well as trauma-informed community education.

The center was designed to provide a safe, childfriendly place for children to come following allegations of abuse and where they, and their non-offending caregivers, could receive services to help them through the healing process. According to Sam Crosby, Director of Advancement, since their inception, "Davis House has served over 9,000 children in Williamson, Lewis, Perry and Hickman counties, and 557 new child clients were served just in our area last year."

Unfortunately, child abuse happens in every community, regardless of socio-economic status, race, religion, education or ethnicity. Abuse happens in homes, schools, churches, daycares, neighborhoods and youth sports. Online abuse is also prevalent.

Children are referred to Davis House after a report has been received from law enforcement or Department of Children Services alleging sexual or significant abuse. They provide support to families and individuals as to how to approach difficult conversations and situations.

The Davis House also offers community education and awareness programs at no cost to the community. Anyone

who works with children or has children in their lives can benefit from their training. They work with public and private schools, child care agencies, churches and faith-based organizations as well as many others groups.

Sam adds, "Our services are vital to keeping children safe from abuse and all of our services are provided at no cost." Davis House depends on funding from individuals, foundations and corporations, as it is not goverment subsidized.

Due to the extremely sensitive nature of the organization’s work, volunteer opportunities are limited. Special events and fundraisers also take place throughout the year to support the Davis House. The Button Ball is its annual gala and raised almost $220,000 last year. This year’s event will take place at Saint Elle in Nashville on August 26.

Ciao, Italia!

It all started in a medieval town in Umbria, Italy many years ago.

Anthony and Denise Campopiano knew early on in their marriage that having a home in Italy naturally meant they’d invite family, newlyweds and friends from church to vacation there. Owning property gave them the opportunity to learn about the area and find the best local activities, experiences, and of course restaurants. Each of their guests was given personal recommendations and helpful itineraries during their stay. Eventually, Anthony began meeting with local businesses, making connections, and visiting people outside of Umbria to curate trips. He was working in the IT industry during the week and planning Italy trips on the weekends until he was able to become a full-time travel agent. Now their travel agency, Italy with Bella, has become a popular resource for all types of travelers.

The couple celebrates 26 years of marriage this year and live in Franklin near their sons Gian, Dante, and Derek, and three grandsons. The family has dual-citizenship in Italy with ancestors from the province of Caserta. When their last son graduated high school, Denise joined Bella. As soon as they introduced her feminine touch to the business, it took off. Other couples appreciate how they balance each other out and find it helpful when planning special anniversaries.

Anthony and Denise are on a plane to Italy at least five times a year. By solely focusing on the one country, travelers can expect a more in-depth itinerary than from an agent who plans trips all over the world and may have never stepped foot in Italy. Anthony says, “Every time we go to Italy, people think we have the best job in the world. We run around, meet in hotels, sleep in hotels, Airbnbs, and boutique hotels. We drink at all the cocktail bars and taste all the gelato! We know every nuance of every town. We’ll get in a car service and then get on a train just to figure out the logistics.”

Growing up, Anthony recalls his mother loving to cook Italian meals for his friends, whose faces would light up with every serving. Anthony says, “It’s kind of the same thing for us. We love seeing the smiles in photos and getting texts while clients are in Italy. We’re tuned in because we treat them like family.” The whole planning process builds this relationship. Anthony and Denise get together with their clients over wine or coffee and discuss culture, language, and walk through the trip multiple times. Additionally, every detail from flights to wine tours is also in an app clients can refer to every step of the way.

Anthony says, “We have so many stories from cancer patients to retirees and nothing gives us more joy than hearing that they are having the same amazing experiences that we have had. The real culture, real food, real history. They’re not just going to all the tourist spots. They’ll have an experience most people can’t get when they go to Italy.”

Half of their calls are from people who will be going to Italy for the first time. They recommend traveling to Italy in September and October and visit at most three cities in 10 days. Denise says, “You have this temptation when you’re in Europe or Italy to see as much as possible. But is that going to make you happy?

Are you going to feel drained? We prefer them not to do too much because then it’s just a blur.”

Bella’s on-site concierges reside in Florence, Salerno, and Sicily. They’re nearby experts when there are questions or issues, especially while Anthony and Denise might be sleeping, due to the time difference. Their son Derek Chirico owns Italy From Scratch (authentic Italian cuisine cooking classes) and will be joining the Bella team along with other family members. Bella planned over 150 trips in 2022. This year, they’re excited to expand the business to curate even more memorable trips. La vita è Bella! In English it means "Life is Beautiful" and for Anthony and Denise, it most certainly is.

Karen and Dan Haugen are living proof that you can do what you love, no matter the season of your life. When they first met in Newport Beach, California, both were working full-time. Karen was also singing in a couple of restaurants.

While exploring their passion for music, Dan invited her to come and listen to him play on his drum set that he kept at his office. Karen brought some background music, and she sang while he played the rhythms. “I thought, 'Hey! He’s talented!'” Karen recalls.

They started talking about creating a band if they could find a pianist, bass, and sax player. Karen had worked with Ron Kobayashi, an accomplished pianist in Southern California, and made an appointment with him to come and practice.

They soon added other musicians and called themselves, ‘Elegant Affair.’ Initially, they performed at their home for corporate parties. They were so well received, they began playing for parties, events, and restaurants.

Then COVID hit.

“We had reached an inflection point and decided to rethink the direction of our lives,” Karen remembers. Since both were about to retire, they decided it was a good time to consider where they might spend their retirement. Karen went to St. Louis for a family reunion in Farmington, Missouri. After 40 years without a visit, she had forgotten how much she loved the people and the Midwest. They began researching possibilities and ran spreadsheets on various lifestyle assumptions. Karen read about a friend who had moved to Tennessee. “I thought, 'What’s in Tennessee?'”

She began exploring Nashville, as it is similar to where she and Dan grew up, from the style of homes and the quietly sophisticated surroundings, to the warmth and values of the people. It made sense from a music standpoint if they were going to continue performing.

In October 2020, they moved to Brentwood and one year later, to Thompson’s Station where they have more land. Karen and Dan soon became involved in the community. Dan was recently ordained as a Deacon at Brentwood Baptist Church. Even their dog, Avigail, is being trained as a service dog so she can visit seniors in assisted living homes.

Their new band, the American Jazz Company, began performing jazz, light pop, country, and songs from the “Great American Songbook.” Karen and Dan book their band for restaurants and other events including corporate, birthdays and weddings. “Living in this area gives us access to world-class musicians,” Dan says. The band members (Jim Kirby, Shawn Pody, and guest artist, Joe Turley) have years of diverse professional experiences elevating the music to another level.

The American Jazz Company plans to expand to a big band orchestra to compete for larger events. For now, Karen and Dan are just happy to perform. “I love looking at the audience and seeing big smiles and people moving to the beat,” says Dan. Karen adds, “It gives us great joy in this sometimes-challenging world, to make a difference wherever we can.” AmericanJazzCo.com

Born and raised in Baton Rouge, Rob worked in television in Los Angeles for NBC before moving to Portland, Oregon, to pursue a job in advertising. Franklin artist Carolyn Beehler’s impressionistic works of art are created not just for viewing but also to “invite the eye to look closer.” Her ‘paper paintings’ resemble oil paintings, yet upon closer inspection, one can see the thousands of intricately scissored and layered pieces of paper carefully culled from numerous magazines, mimicking the brush strokes found on oil paintings. Words, images, and other oddities introduce an element of surprise to her works.

Born in California but raised in Franklin, Beehler always had an interest in art. During her junior year at O’More College of Design, Beehler took an Altered Books class. She realized her interests and abilities aligned less with graphic design and more

with fine art and she began focusing on paper as a medium for her art. “I really enjoy painting and drawing but I really love paper and working with paper. The collage stuff I was seeing wasn't so great. I always thought paper could be pushed further.” After graduation, Beehler completed a design internship in Shanghai, farm-hopped across Italy, created a fashion portfolio in California, and honed her skills in Bloomington, Indiana, before returning to Franklin.

“It took years to figure out how to work with paper and to find my style,” states Beehler. “Paper painting is much more laborious than painting with paints. There are more calculations to be made which is why it is so much slower.”

Refusing to use materials other than paper and glue, the process from inception to completion often takes more than 100 hours.

Working from photographs she has taken or been provided, Beehler creates a 1”x1” grid on her canvas, maps out the rough sketch, and

starts building the foundation for her work. She adds solid blocks of colors and builds on top of that, spending days, weeks, and frequently months, layering paper to “create microcosms you don't get with paint. The texture is embedded in it!” she exclaims.

Her first collection, Frolics in Italy, was followed up with images she captured while in China. Once settled back in Franklin, Beehler challenged herself to see her hometown in a new light. What she could not foresee were the changes COVID19 brought to Franklin. With her third series, “Unprecedented: Franklin During the Pandemic,” Beehler has created a historical timestamp with Franklin as the backdrop.

Beehler’s work has been featured in the Nashville International Airport and is enjoyed by purchasers around the country. If you are interested in seeing additional works created

Saving What Matters Bringing Franklin’s Full History to Life with the African American Heritage Society of Williamson County

ARTICLE BY JENNIFER BENNHOFF | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED In 1829, an enslaved man named Harvey was sold to Atkins and Bethenia McLemore, plantation owners near Thompson’s Station. After Atkins died, Bethenia sold Harvey to her son, William Sugars (“W.S.”) McLemore, a cavalry officer and judge. W.S. owned the Franklin land that became Hard Bargain, a neighborhood of Black farmers and laborers.

Harvey McLemore learned valuable skills during more than 30 years of enslavement and as a free man sharecropping on farms, including the Carnton Plantation. In 1880, he purchased four Hard Bargain lots from W.S. While many freed slaves were starving with nowhere to go, Harvey, through ingenuity and grit, paid $400 he had saved in a can and kept buried. He built a house for his wife Eliza and himself and farmed his remaining lots before selling them. He died in the

late 1800s and his daughter Mary McLemore Matthews remained in the home and raised her children there, including daughter Maggie, who operated a beauty salon in the front hallway. According to the National Museum of African American History & Culture, barbershops and beauty salons have played an important role in African American culture. Besides being places for hair care services, they’ve acted as gathering spots for Black people to freely discuss community affairs, local gossip and politics. Maggie lived in the house until her death in 1989. Laverne Holland, the last of Harvey’s descendants to live in the house, now lives next door.

By the mid-1990s, Harvey’s home was in disrepair. At the same time, local historian Thelma Battle attended the National Conference of State Historic Preservation

Officers in Boston. “While I was there, I visited the Slave House,” recalls Thelma. The Royall House and Slave Quarters housed the largest slaveholding family in Massachusetts and the slaves who provided their lavish lifestyle. Today it’s a museum that intertwines stories of wealth and bondage.

“I attended a reception in the building,” Thelma says, “and the feeling, the realization of what had taken place there. I came away with a duty to inform others of what I had seen and heard.”

Thelma, along with Mary Mills, Bazelia Harris, Louise Patton, Mary Pearce (former executive director of the Heritage Foundation of Williamson County), and County Historian Rick Warwick formed the African American Heritage Society of Williamson County (AAHSWC) to tell important stories of African Americans in the community.

In 1997, The Heritage Foundation partnered with Habitat for Humanity to purchase the McLemore House from Maggie Matthews’ estate. The Foundation sold the home to the AAHSWC for $1 and after years of fundraising and restoration, it’s now a museum filled with storyboards, artifacts, furniture and a setup of Maggie's beauty parlor.

“Our first fundraiser was a fish fry in the Williams’ backyard with tents and folding chairs,” explains Thelma. “Fish fries are part of African American culture. People stopped by to talk and eat fish, and we sold out.”

The AAHSWC has since raised funds through grants, donors and its annual black-tie affair. “Mary Mills and Louise Patton even mortgaged their homes to help get the McLemore House restored,” says Alma McLemore, AAHSWC president and a descendant of Harvey by marriage. She worked for Middle Tennessee Electric for 38 years and serves on the City of Franklin’s Housing & Planning Commissions, the Civil War Historic Commission, and boards of numerous nonprofits. Alma believes we are all equal children of God who have important stories to share. “I want us to understand how our stories are connected,” she says.

One of seven children raised by sharecroppers who worked on the Short Farm, Alma was born and

raised in the historic Natchez Street community.

She remembers walking in downtown Franklin with her grandmother, her brother and his friends, and the boys finding Civil War bullets and shells on the ground and taking them to the Carter House.

“Living in the community where I was born and raised is a blessing,” Alma says.

After the Civil War, formerly enslaved residents built a thriving district of businesses, schools and churches known as the Natchez Street neighborhood. Last year the AAHSWC purchased the Merrill-Williams House at 264 Natchez Street. The Society is partnering with the Middle Tennessee State University Center for Historic Preservation to create a heritage site for the study of local African American history and add to the investment of Franklin’s full history.

Moses Merrill, an enslaved person for 40 years, was deeded the property after the Civil War. Tom A. Williams, son of A.N.C. Williams, formerly enslaved and a popular Franklin merchant, acquired the property and built the house in 1908. The Williams family welcomed Natchez community members to their home for art shows and music performances during the segregation era.

As gentrification affects Franklin communities, historic homes are being torn down. But, donors like Calvin LeHew, Emily Magid and many others stepped in to save the Merrill-Williams House from demolition. Magid, a Franklin philanthropist who was integral to the preservation of the Franklin Theatre, says, “The African American Heritage Society has a vital role in furthering the story of Franklin and saving what matters. Preservation requires that we mend, tend and blend historical significance with community participation.” Or as Alma McLemore explains while discussing the importance of preserving history, “We’re here because they were there.”

Mills, 96, was born on the 4th of July in Franklin and is a pioneer in Williamson County education, serving both before and after public school integration. She spent over 39 years as a teacher and principal in the Franklin Special School District and 25 years on the board of Williamson County Medical Center. She is pictured in front with AAHS Board Emeritus members Mary Walker and Eleanor Bright (now deceased).

Battle has pioneered the field of African American Cultural Studies in Williamson County. She has published several books including Raining in the House and Leaking Outdoors and We Ran Until Who Lasted Longest. Her genealogical research has helped many families trace their roots to Williamson County and she is a recipient of a J. Paul Getty Preservation Award and a Certificate of Merit from the Tennessee Historic Commission.

Black History Month Since 1976, February has been officially designated as Black History Month to recognize the achievements of African Americans in U.S. history. In 1915, 50 years after the Thirteenth Amendment, historian Carter G. Woodson and minister Jesse E. Moorland founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History. The group sponsored a national Negro History Week in 1926, choosing the second week of February to coincide with the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. The event inspired community celebrations honoring inf luential Black Americans. In the 1960s, Negro History Week evolved into Black History Month on college campuses, and then became designated by every U.S. president since Gerald Ford.

Today, Black History Month commemorates the legacies of Black activists, civil rights pioneers, leaders in industry, politics, science, culture and more.

A great way to do that these days is to head over to the part of Williamson County known lately as 31A – the stretch of U.S. Route 31A that runs from Nolensville through College Grove and down through Williamson County.

Hugh Cathcart Thompson is Nashville’s Frank Lloyd Wright. Yet his name is virtually unknown to most people in Franklin. Thompson is the brilliant architect behind Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium. He also designed the Franklin’s historic Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Haynes-Berry House in Franklin, the recently renamed LeHew Mansion, the Watson House, and the Harrison House, a beautiful Victorian tragically torn down in the Five Points district of Franklin at Main Street and 5th Avenue North.

Thompson designed fifty-six buildings during his career as an architect in Nashville. Sadly, only nine are still standing, and Franklin has three of them.

His style was highly detailed, and all his structures were exquisitely designed from cottage homes to the massive tabernacle that became the Ryman.

The Ryman Auditorium originally opened in 1892 as the Union Gospel Tabernacle. Captain Thomas Ryman, a Nashville businessman who owned several saloons and a fleet of riverboats, hired Hugh Cathcart Thompson to design the tabernacle. Ryman had the idea of building a tabernacle after witnessing the preaching of Samuel Porter Jones.

It was 1885, and Captain Ryman attended a tent revival featuring Jones with the intent of heckling him. But a surprising turn of events happened.

Ryman was converted to Christianity! Thereafter, he was determined to

build a tabernacle for Nashville’s large revivals. After several years and $100,000 later, Jones held his first revival there on May 25, 1890.

“The Mother Church of Country Music” made its debut when Captain Ryman began renting the building because WSM needed a larger venue for its Grand Ole Opry shows. The Opry was first broadcast from the Ryman on June 5, 1943. The show continued every week for nearly 31 years until it moved to its new location by the Opryland Hotel.

The Cumberland Presbyterian Church has been penned “Franklin’s Ryman Auditorium” by Mary Pearce, former Director of the Heritage Foundation. This historic church was built in 1876 and is located at 615 West Main Street in Franklin.

Thompson was an expert in designing church buildings that enhanced musical and choral performances magnificently.

Another magnificent church building Thompson designed was the First United Methodist Church in McMinnville. By a deed dated April 12, 1884, John H. French

conveyed a lot, number 40, on which the First United Methodist Church is located. The purchase price of the lot was $1,100 cash. Clay Faulkner, owner of the Mountain City Woolen Mills, helped build the church. Like other Faulkner buildings, you will find great limestone foundations, handsome handmade bricks that have not changed or even chipped in the last hundred years, and arches that enhance all windows and doors.

Another Hugh Cathcart Thompson design is the Watson House. Located at 214 3rd Avenue South in Franklin, this incredible

home was built in 1881. It’s so beloved that it was even featured in “Treasures of America and Where to Find Them” published by Reader’s Digest in 1974.

Only four Franklin families have lived in the Watson house, all highly prominent with interesting stories of their own. The Watson family lived in the home for over a century before it was sold to Dan and Denise Klatt, then later to Mike and Ann Bodnar, who now live in the historic Harris McEwen House. The lovely Ellen Smith with her two sons, Laird and Overton, now reside in the home.

The house was originally built for Susan Catherine “Kitty” Puryear Watson in 1881. The style is Second French Empire French Victorian and features a splendid mansard roof.

Avalyn Berry Swain’s family owned the old Berry Place that was located on Berry Circle. She is the daughter of Tyler Berry and the granddaughter of Walter Aiken Roberts. The Haynes-Berry house has been renamed the LeHew Mansion, after one of the Heritage Foundation’s major donors. The home is located next to Franklin Grove, formerly the O’More College of Design. Mr. Haynes, owner of a downtown hardware store, paid Nashville architect Hugh Cathcart Thompson $6,000 to construct the home. It was completed in the 1890’s and in the style of Romanesque Revival with Eastlake with High Queen Anne touches. The Heritage Foundation recently restored this beloved family home and is the new home of Williamson, Inc. One of the most beautiful homes Hugh Cathcart Thompson designed was the Harrison House in the Five Points district on the corner of 5th Avenue and West Main in Franklin. This beautiful Victorian was torn down.

The home was built in 1881 for $28,000. It was the most expensive house in Williamson County at the time.

James W. Harrison was president of the Williamson County Bank and grocery store owner. The home was torn down in 1931 by Irby Watson for Ned Eggleston, who had bought the house and lot from Margaret Watkins.

The Harrison House sat on the corner of Main Street and 5th Avenue North, where Sweet Cece’s, the former Ford dealership, Interurban bus station and fire rescue squad building were located. Preservationist Bill Powell owns that building up to Sweet CeCe’s. Bill says the structure was built from brick, wood, and stone from the Harrison House.

Probably the one good thing that came out of this demolition was that all the materials used to build the shops next door were repurposed. Today, the building houses Franklin Road Apparel, Habit, Skin Theory Rx, and Heylee B. In 1885, Hugh Cathcart Thompson designed and built his own lovely Victorian home in East Nashville.

The home has been called “The Crown Jewel of Lockeland Springs.” This beauty is located at 1201 Holly Street in Nashville. Filled with original millwork, hardwoods, mantles, transom windows, and grand staircase, this is a true piece of Nashville history.

In 1910, he built this adorable Victorian cottage at 1615 Woodland Street in Nashville. The home is a one-of-a-kind piece of Nashville history. It features 15 ft. ceilings, and the intricate trim work Thompson was famous for on the exterior and front porch of the home.

Located between Fourth Avenue and historic Printers Alley, the Utopia was designed by Hugh Cathcart Thompson to be a luxurious European-style hotel.

Now part of the Dream Nashville hotel, it was built in 1891. The hotel was designed to accommodate the visitors of the Tennessee Centennial Exposition held in Nashville from May 1 – October 31, 1897, in what is now Centennial Park. A reproduction of the Parthenon was built for this event.

In 2014, it was turned into a luxury boutique hotel alongside other buildings around it, by developer Bill Barkley and investors Alex Marks and Billy Frist. During the renovation, they found beautiful pocket doors, original trim and molding, ornate overhead light fixtures and rare Tennessee pink marble. All of those elements were preserved and incorporated into the new 160-room, six-story hotel.

The Utopia was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

This Porte-cochère, c. 1887, was likely designed by Hugh Cathcart Thompson for Glen Leven Farm in Nashville. Early settler Thomas Thompson established Glen Leven Farm in 1790, six years before Tennessee became the 16th state of the United States. The home at Glen Leven Farm was designed by John Thompson, for his fourth wife, Mary Hamilton House Thompson. In the 1880s, the house underwent a renovation that was attributed to Hugh Cathcart Thompson. Located on the corner of Franklin Road and Thompson Lane, the farm was left to The Land Trust of Tennessee.

Hugh Cathcart Thompson is buried in the Spring Hill Cemetery at 5110 Gallatin Pike South in Nashville. His gravestone says “Uncle Hugh Thompson” along with his wife, “Aunt Ellen Thompson.”

The couple did not have children, but it was believed they raised their niece.

We assume she purchased this marker to honor them.

Homeownership Becomes Reality for Two Local Women

Once only a fleeting dream, homeownership recently became a reality for Nina Reyes and Linda Lemus. After years of relocating due to rental increases and a discouraging housing market, Nina is relieved to have the stability homeownership has provided her family. “I won’t have to bounce around from place to place anymore,” she says. “I am proof that homeownership is possible.”

As a single, working parent of two young children, Linda was struggling to find local housing options within her means. The Habitat for Humanity Williamson-Maury (HFHWM) homeownership program provided an opportunity to create a better path for Linda and her children, Isaiah and Mya. Homeownership with an affordable mortgage became a reality for Nina and Linda after participating in more than 200 hours each of sweat equity, homebuyer education, and one-on-one budget coaching through HFHWM. Linda is not the first member of the Lemus family to complete the Habitat program. Ten years ago, her brother, Frank, purchased a home for his family through HFHWM. Two generations of program participants attended Nina and Linda’s housing dedication ceremony, a full-circle moment for the Lemus family and HFHWM, now in its thirtieth year of service.

“I joined the affiliate ten years ago, and one of my first builds was the home for Frank Lemus,” notes HFHWM President and COO, Jennee Galland.

“Standing at the dedication with Frank and Linda, who was on the cusp of her family's new chapter as homeowners, it was hard not to be moved. I found it

a testament to the life-changing power of Habitat for Humanity and a perfect example of HFHWM's mission to put God’s love in action.”

The affiliate prides itself on building strength, stability, and self-reliance through shelter. Over the course of 30 years, HFHWM has helped 300 families achieve safe, affordable housing through their homeownership and Critical Repair programs.

“We are incredibly proud of our programs, but there’s still plenty of work to do. Many of our teachers, first responders, and valued essential workers are being priced out of the housing market and struggling to remain in the communities in which they were born and raised,” explains HFHWM CEO, Kim Randell.

As the housing prices continue to climb in Middle Tennessee, HFHWM is planning to break ground on a 27-home neighborhood in Columbia to be built over the next three years.

About Habitat for Humanity Williamson-Maury: Habitat for Humanity is a global nonprofit housing organization working in local communities across all 50 states in the U.S. and approximately 70 countries. Habitat for Humanity Williamson-Maury (HFHWM) was fully incorporated as an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International on December 5, 1992. It has built over 300 homes in Williamson and Maury Counties and continues to build 12-16 new homes each year. Home construction, critical repair, and neighborhood development services are funded through tax-deductible financial contributions; in-kind donations from local businesses, churches, civic organizations, and individuals; and profits generated from their affiliate's ReStore. Winter Boredom Busters F U N W AY S T O K E E P YO U R E NE RGY AND SPIRITS HIG H

Does being cooped up through the long winter months have you feeling down and lethargic? Staying physically and mentally active is essential to maintaining your energy and keeping your spirits high. So give the following boredom busters a try.

Go skating. Ice, inline, or rollerskating is excellent cardiovascular exercise and an effective energy and mood booster. It also improves balance and coordination. Not to mention, it's just plain fun. So find a rink to get your blood pumping.

Film festival. These are often held during the winter months at independent theaters, museums, and on college campuses. If the festival has multiple films you'd like to check out, it likely offers discounted passes to see multiple or unlimited movies during the event.

Join a gym. Get your cardio workout on treadmills, stationary bicycles, stair climbers, arc trainers, indoor rowers, and elliptical trainers. Then hit the weight machines every other day to tone and strengthen your muscles.

Just think how great you'll look come summer!

Aerobics or dance class. Aerobics is an excellent workout that also enhances energy.

But if the 'E' word scares you, opt for a dance

class instead. There are lots of styles to choose from: jazz, modern, hip-hop, ballet, clogging, ballroom, salsa, contra, square dancing, and more.

Attend a sporting event. Get tickets to a football, hockey, or basketball game. If watching team sports isn't your thing, you might enjoy a boxing or martial arts match or ice skating competition.

Try a new sport. Get your game on with a wide variety of indoor sports. Pickleball, racquetball, martial arts, tennis, rock climbing, swimming, volleyball, ice hockey, boxing, bowling, and basketball are but a few. Check with your local YMCA, recreation centers, or community parks and recreation offerings.

Spa treatment. Revitalize by scheduling a day at the spa, or give yourself a home spa treatment.

Bask in luxury with a facial, manicure, pedicure, and hair treatment. A new hairstyle, color, or highlights is also a great way to lift your spirits.

Form a weekly or monthly card-playing group. Ask friends, neighbors, coworkers, and family to join you in a regular evening of bridge, euchre, poker, or rummy. Ask everyone to bring a snack to share, and take turns with other players hosting the event.

Go to the theater or a dance performance. Look for performances at your nearby big city performing arts theatres as well as small venues found in many communities.

Community colleges and universities also often have performances open to the public.

A weekend away. Are you feeling cooped up? Take a long weekend away someplace warm, or even just a lively city nearby. Look up attractions and entertainment before you go to make the most of your weekend stint.

Go to a concert. Check out large venues near you. But don't forget about smaller community venues that often bring in national and international independent artists of a wide variety of genres such as bluegrass, folk, jazz, Celtic, rock, R&B, blues, Latin, and much more. Smaller venues are great because they provide a more intimate experience.

Check out a museum. Look for museums and galleries in your community, the big city, and on college campuses. Art, history, and science museums are a fun, fascinating way to spend a day.

Visit the library. If you like to read, many libraries offer cozy reading nooks. So it's an excellent way to get out of the house for a while and still relax. Add to that, libraries offer so much more than books. They house extensive collections of magazines, DVDs, video games, and music CDs as well.

Do a jigsaw puzzle. This is the perfect indoor activity for relaxing while exercising your brain. Before you begin, cut a piece of wood or cardboard a little larger than the dimensions of the puzzle. That way, if it takes a while to complete, you can store it out of your way.

Volunteer for a local charity. Choose your favorite charity and volunteer your time and service. Whether you want to help the elderly, poor, sick, homeless, kids, pets, or the environment, there's something out there for everyone. Just choose something meaningful to you.

Rearrange your furniture. Give your living room, bedroom, or office a fresh look by rearranging for a cozier feel or for a better view of daylight to help brighten your environment.

Paint a wall. Choose a bright, cheery paint color to brighten a room. Do you need more energy? Try red on a single wall. Orange increases happiness and social behavior. Yellow is also a good choice because it helps you think better while reducing depression. A word of caution, though. Each of these intense colors can cause irritability if overdone. So paint only a single wall if you're using a dark shade. If the color is very muted, you might be able to use the color on more than one wall in a room.

Orange may be the new black, but it’s also the color that represents health and wellness if you ask Meghan and Scott Littlejohn. The couple own and operate Orangetheory Fitness studios in Franklin, Spring Hill, and Murfreesboro.

The Littlejohns have a very personal connection to the program’s mission and the importance of exercise in overall health and well-being. “It changed our lives and we made it our mission to change others’ lives through Orangetheory,” says Meghan.

Several years ago while living in South Florida, Meghan suffered a near-fatal

case of meningitis and acute encephalitis, resulting in a traumatic brain injury which left her unable to perform basic life skills. “Our children were young. It was the scariest time in our lives,” recalls Scott, who is a cardiology physician assistant. “Meghan was an executive in a national healthcare recruiting firm, who then, amongst many things, could not read or write.”

She endured two years of intense rehabilitation, but after exhausting efforts to improve her cognitive and neurologic function,

her doctor prescribed two hours a week at Orangetheory Fitness, as exercise is proven to increase blood flow to the brain and stimulate the nervous system.

“My husband and I joined Orangetheory and I was so intimidated. I didn’t know if I could keep up. But they greeted us like family,” she says. “After the first month, my brain function was so much better. I quickly noticed results, both physically and mentally. My memory, anxiety and energy were improved. I started getting my life back. It was an unbelievable experience.”

The Littlejohns stuck with the program and eventually decided to open their own studio, relocating from Florida to Williamson County. “We love our community,” she continues. “We hear life changing stories from our members every day. It is so rewarding."

A sneak peek inside the closet of active mom and entrepreneur Keri Tarantino of Leawood, KS reveals a dressing room that rivals celebrity homes in Beverly Hills. But it didn’t come easily. Keri painstakingly planned, designed and curated the space with care.

When we first stepped inside, we gasped as our eyes beheld the glory. No detail went unnoticed in this dreamy dressing room. Here are some guiding principles that can be drawn from her exquisite taste and vision. How you organize your closet will of course differ based on the size of your space, the size of your wardrobe, and the kind of life you lead. But applying the guidelines Keri used in her space will result in a much more organized and aesthetically pleasing space.

USE R EAL ESTATE W ISELY Reserve the front and middle of the closet for clothes worn most often. For someone who gets dressed for work each morning at 6 a.m., work clothes should be at the front of the closet. Store lesser-worn items like formal wear and out-of-season clothes toward the back and on the upper shelves. The large mirror and counter with chair provides the perfect spot to select jewelry and finalize finishing outfit touches.

While every closet is different, the key here is everything has a home.

Group clothes by kind first and color second. This ensures quick location of that favorite shirt when it’s needed. Bonus - it’s easy on the eye. Group like with like: Gather belts, sweaters, long-sleeve shirts, work pants, dresses, button-down shirts, jeans, shorts, etc., and decide the best place to store each item as a group (e.g., hang pants in the closet, fold and stack sweaters in a bureau). Working with groupings will help you figure out how much space you need and the best way to store each type of item.

Using space efficiently is important, but keep in mind every good design includes some negative space. For instance, consider adding built-ins on the long wall of your closet but keep the short wall open with a mirror.

The Cheairs Family

When the Battle of Franklin Trust was chosen to take over management of Rippa Villa last year, it was an opportunity to reopen the home and property to the public to learn about its incredible history and the impact it had on Franklin during the American Civil War. The Trust was the perfect organization to do so – the nonprofit’s mission is to preserve, understand, and interpret the story of a people forever impacted by the American Civil War. “Rippa Villa is very closely connected to the Battle of Franklin because everything that happened in and around Spring Hill on November 29th, 1864, is a direct path to Franklin the next day,” says Eric Jacobson, CEO of the Trust.

The Greek Revival-style home was built in the early 1850s by Nat Cheairs, who served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. “His family were substantial landowners and owned a huge number of slaves, so the Cheairs family and the house and site itself are really relics of that era,” he says.

It’s important, he explains, to share its history with others. “I believe that the middle part of the 19th century is the American crucible. The war was what we had to go through to bind the Union together and to end slavery. We were redefined and set back on the course to deal with the self-evident truth that all men, all people, are created equal.”

Rippa Villa, along with the Carnton and Carter Houses, two other historic properties directly impacted during the war, receive over 100,000 visitors a year. Eric said in its first year managing and marketing Rippa Villa, the Trust brought

in more visitors than the site has ever had, and its marketing has been directed at attracting a broader group of people.

To encourage visitation even more, a ticket to visit all three homes is offered, which is much more cost effective than buying separate tickets to the individual sites.

The Trust offers a variety of tours including battlefield tours, slavery tours, and a behind-the-scenes tour. “We also just launched the Lost Cause & the Legacy of the Confederacy tour, so there are about six different ways you can experience the site.”

Knowledgeable Rippa Villa guides lead these educational and interesting tours. “The site itself is a hundred acres, so there's a lot to see outside as well,” he says.

“There's the battlefield which is adjacent to the property, there’s the remnants or foundation of the first house, a family cemetery and a slave cabin - the grounds around the house are filled with history.”

Initially, the Trust inherited an empty house. “What that has allowed us to do is go through a pretty substantial step-by-step restoration starting on the first floor, as well as determining how the house should really look. So we've started to move furniture back in,” says Eric.

“We're returning Rippa Villa to what it's always been, which is an important historic site. Sites like these are the key to understanding our past, and if we truly understand our past, it gives us a much better perspective on who we are as a people right now.”
