The Appalachian Trail meanders some 2,200 miles across 14 states from Georgia to Maine. Its allure is legendary.
Diane “Sticks” Harsha was captivated by the AT after reading about it in the early 2000s. “I felt like I wanted some sort of challenging outdoor activity that wasn’t too extreme,” she said. “I was intrigued and thought, ‘How hard can it be?’”
The downtown Franklin resident and FBI spe cial agent hit the trail for the first time in 2005. “I tried it for a weekend and absolutely fell in love with the physical challenge, the beauty of nature and the trail community,” she says.
It became her goal to hike the trail in its entirety. And she did it, step-by-step. Over 13 years. “Reaching the end was something of a gut punch,” she says. “It was a beautiful day and it brought tears to my eyes, but I thought, ‘What do I do Whatnext?’”camenext was a revealing and amusing book about her experience. Award-winning songwriter Jeffrey Steele has come a long way from his childhood in Hollywood, California, and yet he’s carried a little bit of it with him all the way. Now a resident of Franklin for 28 years, Jeffrey grew up a lover of rock ‘n’ roll. After shrug ging off his father’s suggestions of country music, he stumbled upon a Merle Haggard record one day, and everything changed. Merle opened up the door to Willie, Waylon, Cash and Kristopherson. “I was on the Sunset Strip playing in all the clubs down there in my rock band – I had a Zeppelin cover band – and all of a sudden I was singing Merle Haggard songs in Bakersfield,” said Jeffrey. Eventually, Jeffrey swapped out his rock licks for a country band and hit the road.
The best part about Jeffrey’s life as a songwriter is the ability to touch the lives of fans. One of the highlights, according to Jeffrey, happens while out on the road with an act like Rascal Flatts. “You look out and see 20,000 people singing your lyrics, and it’s pretty amaz ing. I thank God every day.”

A few years later, Jeffrey arrived in Nashville as the lead singer for the band Boy Howdy and fell in love with the idea of living here and writing songs. While working on that dream, he experienced the loss of his voice which forced him to stop singing and traveling for two years while he recuperated and retrained it. During that time, Jeffrey focused on honing his craft as a songwriter to be the best he could possibly be. Despite
being told that the radio wouldn’t play his unique rock-infused country sound, in the late 1990s, Diamond Rio recorded their hit song written by Jeffrey called “Unbelievable,” and everything changed. “I had had a few successes, but that was the one where I knew something flipped,” said Jeffrey. Suddenly, Jeffrey was sought after by Today Jeffreyartists. sits atop a steep mountain of hit songs and awards from “What Hurts the Most” by Rascal Flatts to “My Town” by Montgomery Gentry, from BMI Songwriter of the Year Awards to CMA Triple Play Awards – the list goes on and on. Aside from writing songs, Jeffrey has also produced artists like Montgomery Gentry and Keith Anderson. He did it all just by staying true to himself. “They try to shape you into what they think you should be, and I’m just glad that I hung out and that I just did me –I just kept doing me.”

“I would put my daughter in my chest carrier, and she’d fall asleep to the sound of the hair dryer,” says Jessie.
Jessie Mobley has always had an entrepreneurial spirit. While living in Los Angeles following the birth of her daughter, Mobley launched a concierge beauty brand, offering in-home services to those unable to make it into a salon.
“While away from home in Nigeria, the stress of the pandemic and being postpartum caused hair loss,” says Vanessa. “When I was finally able to come home, I flew directly to Nashville and joined Jessie as the manager of 931 Beauty.”

Opening the doors to Wild Sage Studio just a few months ago in June, co-owners Andrea Schreiber and Lisa Diaz have hit the ground running in bringing their expertise to the Cool Springs area. Alexis Mylenbusch always had a love of horses and western wear, so it was meant to be that her fiancé is a farrier and works with about 30 horses every day. Now they each have their own horses on their property and trail ride together. All of their friends wear cowboy hats and she was looking for a creative outlet, so she woke up one day and realized that she should design rhinestone cowboy hats. She bought the supplies and practiced until she was ready to sell them on Etsy. She started her Rhinestone Cowgirl Etsy shop in October 2021 and was overjoyed when she got her first sales. Nashville influencers, rodeo queens, musicians, and bachelorettes are dazzled by the sparkling head pieces. She says, “It can be someone going to a concert or they’re legit riding and showing their horses. Anyone can pull it off.” When it got to the point where she was creating 100 to 200 hats per month, she knew she had to leave her full-time corporate job to pursue her small business dreams.

One evening at O’ Be Joyful, Huck Johns met Franklin legend Buffalo Bill, the oldest vendor at the Heritage Foundation’s festivals for selling Texas sausages. They discovered they each designed their own hats and Huck was inspired to sell them. Their businesses Huckhats and Buffalo Brims debuted at this year’s Main Street Festival. Huck says, “Instead of being in competition, we decided to team up and support each other.” After almost selling out at the festival, both of their businesses took off. Huck says, “It kept going and snowballing. I had a FaceTime with Billy Gibbons from ZZ Top and I’m creating him a hat. Then Jake Kiszka from Greta Van Fleet came in and bought one and has been wearing it all over the country. Now there’s over 100 Huckhats on the streets just this year.”

Great interior design involves careful planning to create a unique project for each client. But not everything is totally expected. For example, I may strategically place a really cool antique chair covered with modern fabric in a room. It gives it a bit of character and warmth along with a little bit of a surprise. Planning for the farm is a little different. I hope to add to my alpaca herd over time. I am excited that we have three baby alpacas on the way!

Well I’m originally from Texas where I grew up in a large amazing family. Immediately after high school, I joined the Army because I couldn’t decide if I really wanted to go to beauty school. After getting my Cosmetology license I attended a make up school to further my education and since then have been working doing hair and make up!

WDN: Okay. Yeah, it literally was a lightning bolt moment, and I feel like a lot of entrepreneurs talk about that too, where something just hap pened and they're like, "What? We're doing this. It's happening." There was a pop-up closet sale that they were doing at Parlour 3 in Brentwood in September of 2019. Hunter Premo was doing it with seven of her other influencer girlfriends. Natalie Kennedy, Alexa Anglin, KBStyled. I really love following her, and I wanted to shop her stuff. I only knew about Brooke, KBStyled, and Hunter when I went. I wasn't a huge influencer girl starting out. I like clothes and I like a deal and it seemed fun, so I went.

FL: AT WHAT POINT DID YOU DECIDE TO DO THIS FULL TIME AND GIVE UP NURSING?
I think it was January of 2021, not even two years from the advent of the idea. I mean I was so busy and I was having a really hard time with being a mom of three kids, being a cancer nurse to children, and then also trying to grow a business. Because I was only working one day a week, it wasn't the hours. It was the mental load of it that was too much. But it was a stressful choice to make, though, because I loved what I did. I wanted to be in three different places at three different times, and it was just too much for me. And I'd really never been able to use my creative side.
I left that sale with my goodies, and we went out to eat after. I was with a friend, and I was just like, "That was so fun. This is a whole thing. This is a huge market no one's tapped into." I'd never heard of anything like focusing on influencers and all of their stuff, and obviously, they have so much of it. I just got a napkin and wrote down my idea for the business and went hard in on it from there.
And of course, a portion of our proceeds from every sale goes to Tennessee Kids Belong. Our third child is adopted and I knew when I started the business that I wanted it to be more than just clothes. I wanted us to actually help people and possibly change somebody's life, so I really wanted to look for an organization that was just doing really great things, and they really are.
FL: WHAT DO YOU ATTRIBUTE YOUR RAPID GROWTH TO?
Yes. You can apply to sell. Make money off the bags that are just sitting in your closet and upgrade to a bag you really want to carry! I want to make selling designer bags as easy and convenient for people as possible, so we'll have a concierge pick-up, come to your house, take the bag, sell the bag quickly. We sell them very quickly. We have about 10,000 website hits a month.
WDN: Probably expanded to five cities. Metropolis areas. That would be the goal.

Woodmont Realty since 2006, but the company has been in Middle Tennessee for over 30 years. Jamie notes his tenure with the company is largely due to the profes sionalism, training, and mindset of his fellow agents. Jamie Shea is what is often referred to as a 'unicorn' someone that was born and raised right here in Middle Tennessee. A graduate of McGavock High School, Jamie remained here for college and attended MTSU where he joined the Navy Reserves. Little did he know that would quickly send him on his trajectory into real estate and real estateTrueappraisals.toJamie’snature, his offer to help a fellow reservist in his unit gave him his start. A friend who was an appraiser needed help, so in 1998 Jamie immediately began working on getting his appraisal certification. In 2006, it became obvious to Jamie that appraisals and selling went hand in hand. Jamie’s uncle who was a seasoned real estate agent, Johnny Shea, helped him decide to take on the addi tional role of a real estate agent. But Jamie didn’t want to simply be an over-the-weekend-type of agent, he wanted more time to focus on the sales piece of his business. After finding a good work balance, he decided he wanted to take it a step further. “I went all in, and I got my broker’s license,” says Jamie.
