As summer begins to wind down and the start of school commences, the carefree days of slower morning routines and spending more time adventuring is exchanged for busier school and sport routines and schedules. The summers tend to progressively feel like they fly by the older we get, as do the years, but the simple pleasures of summer never get old. Although the routine of school for our children is often a welcome friend by the time August rolls around, it is generally a little bittersweet. Our August issue is dedicated to the cutest members of our community— kids and pets. They both have a way of making us feel special and their loyalty and sense of wonder is refreshing. Jenny Mollen is equal parts, author, fun mom, and dictator. Well... dictator of her kids lunches that is. We sit down with Jenny as she tells us about her new books. Find a new furry friend, find hope and sanctuary with elephants, and learn how one family-owned and operated animal hospital has been keeping our furry friends healthy for generations. Go for a walk in downtown Franklin, grab a book at Landmark Booksellers or a caramel apple from Kilwins. We feature both of these local stores in this issue. Marsha Walk Carroll has loved reading and writing since she was a child, but it was during her move from Texas to Tennessee that she came across an old writing that she had held onto from high school. “I thought, ‘Hey, that’s not half bad!’” said Marsha. As a teacher of language arts and reading, she began focusing on children’s books. Today, now a College Grove resident, Marsha is the author of The Adventures of Rembrandt the Tuxedo Cat - a children’s book series including her fourth and newest release, The Adventures of Rembrandt the Tuxedo Cat: Helps AJay, the Blue Jay, Rebuild His Nest. The main character, Rembrandt, the Tuxedo Cat, is based off Marsha’s own black and white pet cat, just as many other characters in the book series are based off real animals from her life. Once she comes across an idea for a story, she develops it into her own imaginative work starring her feline friend. Carroll’s stories are positive and uplifting. Rembrandt and his friends are kind and compassionate as they work together to solve problems – important skills and characteristics to instill in our children these days. Marsha’s illustrator, Izzy Bean of London, England, works very closely with her to bring the characters to life with her vibrant artwork. Actress Jennifer Jones once said, "If you could choose one characteristic that would get you through life, choose a sense of humor." Well, self-deprecating entertainer Jenny Mollen got the memo. Her sense of humor permeates her many talents and is infectious. Actress, writer, influencer and New York Times bestselling author, Mollen tackles her latest two book projects with wit and playfulness. Dictator Lunches: Inspired Meals That Will Compel Even the Toughest of (Tyrants) Children, due out mid-September is Jenny's first foray into the kitchen with a book of healthy recipe ideas for kiddos. Maria Dinoia with Franklin Lifestyle (FL): LET'S TALK ABOUT DICTATOR LUNCHES FIRST. TELL ME HOW YOU APPEAL TO MOMS WITH IT. Jenny Mollen (JM): Well, I started out just messing around in my kitchen. It was me bored at night. I don't know how to turn my television on, so my kids would go to sleep and I would just be rummaging for snacks in the kitchen and know that I had to make lunch for the next day. And I was like, 'okay, well, how can I make this fun? How can I entertain myself?' And then I started getting notes from the teachers and they were like, 'You can't send a pork bun with instructions on how to reheat it for lunch. We don't have time to do that. I would send fondue one day. I'm like, 'Could you reheat the cheese for me'? But through doing it, it really became a way for me to not only push my son's boundaries in terms of what he ate, it was a way to communicate with him. It was a sublimation of my own guilt as a working mom. I could show up and have this dialogue with him, even when I wasn't there. Even when I'm not the one picking him up after school. I'm a latchkey kid. I come from two parents who work days and dated nights. So for me, food has always been so important and food equals love. And I always wanted to be the kid with the handwritten note. So this is my way of doing that for them. FL: SO WHERE DO YOU DRAW YOUR KIDS' MEAL INSPIRATION FROM? Jenny: Literally, it's whatever I have in the house. I look at the fridge and I'm like, 'What can I do?' Let's say I have leftover fried rice. I'm like, 'Okay, I'm going to go with a full-on trip to China theme. I'm not a good cook. I'm not somebody who is a professional chef. I am also lefthanded. So if I can do this, any mom can do this. This is really curation more than anything else. And for instance, one of these rice characters, I'll take a mold, I'll put the rice into the bear. I flip it onto the plate. And that's it. There's not a lot of steps. And even in the book, I don't do recipes that are crazy. It just starts with just staring into the fridge and saying, 'What's a story I could tell?'

FL: DID YOU ALWAYS FEEL THIS WAY ABOUT FOOD? JM: Well, here's the thing: My dad is a sports medicine doc. We never had red meat. He doesn't eat red meat. I didn't eat chicken until I was in college. Diet and exercise has always played a huge role in my life. And I didn't know, at 15 years old that everybody didn't go home after school every day and not have to go on a run, go on a walk, or do something for their bodies. So I did grow up with more of a heightened awareness on health and fitness and diet and exercise. As opposed to my husband {actor Jason Biggs} who's from north Jersey who grew up eating processed cheese and learned what romaine lettuce was at the age of 25. And I just knew all along that I was going to feed my kids the way I eat. I'm not going to dumb it down for them. I have faith that they can rise to the challenge. I also want to expose them to every possible thing I can expose them to food wise while they're this age, while they're still growing and developing their palette and then later on they can do whatever they plan to do. FL: WHAT ABOUT SUGAR? JM: I get scared when I start talking about it and people think my kids don't eat sugar and it's like, 'No, my kids eat sugar every day. That's why I have to be woke about it. Because the rest of their diet is completely sugar. I know it's polarizing. I know some moms definitely are like, 'Whoa, I don't want to.' They always say to me, 'There's such a disparity between the hot mess that you present on your Instagram page and then this sort of neurotic food-obsessed mom on the other. And I'm like 'They can be together. They can live simultaneously. I just want them to eat real food. I mean Jason's a foodie so he can get behind this because he loves eating everything. He wants to taste everything. He thinks he's Anthony Bourdain. He's traveling to places unknown to eat crickets and whatever. So I just want them to have that spirit of adventure with food because I just think it makes for a well-rounded palette life person. FL: LET'S NOW TALK CITY OF LIKES. HOW MUCH OF THE BOOK IS BASED IN TRUTH? BECAUSE IT'S ABOUT SOMEONE JUST LIKE YOU WITH TWO KIDS WHO FALLS INTO THE INFLUENCER WORLD. IT'S TOUTED AS FICTION, BUT HOW MUCH OF IT IS BASED IN TRUTH? JM: A lot of it is true. And now that I've written fiction, I believe that every writer is just writing their truth over and over and over again but calling it fiction. Because this book is I think, Jason's always joking, but I think this book is more honest than either of my first two memoirs. It's my mommy issues on steroids. It's my darkest fears. And I think that I get into some of my most vulnerable truths in this book that I really couldn't have written in the other CONTINUED >

two or as a memoir in general, because I would be protective of the people in my life. I wouldn't want to hurt their feelings. Even though the opening of my second book does start 'Names have been changed except for my mom. Her name is Peggy.' FL: WHEN DID YOU FIRST DECIDE THAT YOU WANTED TO TACKLE BEING AN INFLUENCER? JM: I fell into it accidentally, to be honest. I had my second son. I moved to New York with a following really that started on Twitter. I mean, Twitter really launched my career because in that particular time, 2010, Twitter democratized comedy for female writers in L.A. and all of a sudden people were getting book deals off of just having a big following and telling funny jokes in however many characters or less that it used to be. I think it's changed now, but I think it used to be 140. And I used to think in Tweets. So unlike LA, where the currency is really fame and you're only as popular as the last pilot you shot, I moved to New York at a time when, if you had a following, like I did of females between the ages of 18 to 35, you could really monetize that. And brands would approach you. And I found myself selling maxi pads and posing for the cover of Parents magazine and doing all these wacky things that sort of pushed me into that world that I never really went searching for. None of us did, the influencing thing, it sort of happened to all of us. One day we were posting pictures of our feet on vacation and the next thing you know, you're selling dog food. It really just happened to us. And I always laugh because if in high school, somebody had asked what I wanted to do when I grew up, I would never have said, 'well what I want to do is just post pictures of my life and document myself, picking a chin zit in the middle of the night while also making money for it.' FL: YOU'RE A PODCAST HOST, YOU'RE AN AUTHOR. YOU'RE AN ACTRESS. YOU'RE AN INSTAGRAM PERSONALITY. DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE ROLE BESIDES MOM AND WIFE, OF COURSE? I think at the end of the day, I'm just a writer. It's like all the other stuff, nothing fills me like that. So that is really my true passion. Once I found writing, and once I wrote my first book, I was like, 'I'm never going back to acting. Why did I ever think that would be fun?' I hate being held hostage on the set. I get food anxiety when I'm stuck in a trailer and I'm like, 'All there is is this last granola bar and we're here until tomorrow.' It's so stressful. And there are so many cooks in the kitchen. It's almost like I don't want to facilitate somebody else's story when I could tell my own. And that might sound so narcissistic, but you know, as a writer, you create the world. As far as treating what I call the ‘Mr. No Shoulders’ of the world like snakes, there are other groups out there that provide that service, but she does treat lizards. She's been a great addition to the team.” As a full-service, no-appointment-needed veterinary hospital, WCAH offers everything from well care, prescriptions and x-rays to blood work,

dental extractions and surgery on site. It also provides urgent care after hours. “Illnesses and accidents don’t just stop at five o'clock, so we wanted to offer a service that is local,” says Dr. Shaun. “It’s not for our clients only – it’s for everyone. Our belief is to treat the needs at the current moment, and then to get them back to their regular veterinarians for follow-ups. We’re not 24/7, but from Monday through Friday we’re here from 7:30 in the morning until midnight.” Dr. Shaun was recently named 2022 Practitioner of the Year by the Tennessee Veterinary Medical Association. “It was a tremendous honor, and I'm very humbled by it,” he says. Americans love their automobiles, but the relationship is one-sided. Because no matter what you do, at some point your car is going to let you down. Step inside the oldest commercial building in downtown Franklin with a rich history. Landmark Booksellers, located at 114 Main Street, has been the home of some of the most important events and businesses in Franklin. From presidents to the inspiration for Karen Kingsbury’s book and movie The Bridge, you will fall in love with this building. But more importantly, you will fall in love with the owners, Joel and Carol Tomlin, who opened Landmark Booksellers in 2005. In a world of online book-buying and impersonalization, Joel and Carol bring a warmth and Southern hospitality to the downtown business community. Joel and Carol’s union blended two beautiful families. He had five children, and she had two. With seven children, they formed a perfect unit. Joel comes from a long line of Tennesseans who came to our fine state way back in 1802. After living in Nashville for many years, he moved to Franklin in 1975. He had a successful real estate career. Carol had been a school teacher for over 30 years. Education and reading were important to Carol because her beloved mother had been a librarian. Both avid readers, Joel and Carol were looking for something they could do together after their children were grown. One day, Joel was visiting his favorite bookstore, Dad’s Old Book Store in the Green Hills area of Nashville. The owner, Mr. Ed Penny, told Joel he was ready to retire. So the Tomlins decided to purchase his 35,000+ collection of rare and antiquarian books with the idea of opening a bookstore in Franklin. The Old Factory Store on East Main was for sale, so they purchased the historic building. It was a natural fit for this next chapter in their lives as it combined their love of reading, history, and people.

Landmark Booksellers specializes in the classics, Southern Americana, local authors, along with rare and antique books. They have over 1,000 signed editions and books you will not find anywhere else. Landmark also has a precious collection of children’s books in the back room where you can sit in Carol’s favorite chair and read to your children. Over a decade ago, #1 New York Times best-selling author Karen Kingsbury visited Landmark Booksellers with her editor. She spent some time with Joel and Carol and naturally fell in love with them and their bookstore. A few months after her visit, her publisher Simon & Schuster called Joel and told him that Karen’s next fiction book would be about their bookstore, and he and Carol would be the main characters! The book became a best-seller, and then the Hallmark Channel turned it into a two-part movie starring Ted McGinley and Faith Ford as Joel and Carol. You can still see this wonderful movie on Hallmark. The only downside is that it was filmed in Canada, instead of in our charming downtown Franklin. However, the world premier was at the Franklin Theatre. “The reason I created The Bridge, inspired by Landmark Booksellers, is because a bookstore like Landmark is so rare,” says Karen Kingsbury. “What Joel and Carol Tomlin have created for the people of Franklin, is an iconic gift that will remain part of the fabric of Franklin forever. Every day, people come from all over the nation and world looking to visit the store that caused me to write The Bridge. These people have read the book or watched the two-part Hallmark movie. Joel and Carol sign autographs every day for these fans. It is a beautiful example of life inspiring art and then imitating it.” The Bridge is about a town that rallies to save a small bookstore, where inventory is completely ruined in a flood. In a twist of fate or providence, the same thing happened to Landmark but it wasn’t a flood, even though the building is near the Harpeth River. During the pandemic in 2020, Landmark had to close its doors like small businesses everywhere, and were hurting financially. Karen stepped in and offered a signed copy of her next novel at the time, Someone Like You, through the Landmark Bookseller’s website. They sold around 10,000 books in 10 days. The response was overwhelming and helped save the bookstore from financial ruin. Joel and Carol refer to Karen as their “guardian angel.” “When I wrote The Bridge, I couldn’t imagine anything more devastating to a small bookstore than a flood, ” Kingsbury said. “I never dreamed an invisible virus would have the power to wipe out iconic stores like Landmark.” Karen was doing a Facebook LIVE with a thousand of her readers, when she put out this request, “Let’s do what we can to save Landmark Booksellers; it’s the least we can do.”

One of the most fascinating facts about Landmark is that its magnificent white columns were made out of solid poplar tree trunks. Symmetry and columns such as these are the hallmarks of Greek Revival architecture. We find it so fitting that Landmark Booksellers, which is filled with so much important literature and history, shares its ties to ancient Greece. Known as the “Old Factory Store,” the building has had many famous visitors from Andrew Jackson, James K. Polk, Sam Houston, Davy Crockett, Karen Kingsbury, and Kathie Lee Gifford. It is believed the building was a bank in its early years because Brevet Major General Andrew Jackson’s troops were paid from this site after their journey on the Natchez Trace once they returned from the Battle of New Orleans in 1816. HOW ONE COUPLE BUILT THEIR FAMILY OF NINE CHILDREN

WE ARE FAMILY JANALEN AND ROCKY FISCHER Janalen and Rocky Fischer, married 26 years, were friends growing up in Filer, Idaho, population 2,500. While Rocky served a twoyear mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, they exchanged letters. Four months after he returned, they married. Franklin Lifestyle sat down with the Fischers. They wanted to tell us about each member of their family in their own words because, “people need to know they are not alone in the challenges that each one faces. And together we can and will overcome.” The Fischers tried for seven years to have a child and applied to adopt when Janalen became pregnant. As Rocky finished law school and Janalen earned a master’s degree in piano performance, their daughter Abigail was born with cystic fibrosis (CF). Thus began the couple’s journey parenting children with special needs. “Abby” is now 19, a college student and a singer-songwriter with her own music on Spotify. Three years later Kati, 16, was born. “She's unique as she was the first documented person to have both CF and Prader-Willi,” says Janalen. Kati meticulously designs greeting cards that she hands out to her friends. Kati also loves a good party! Both girls take Trikafta, a gene modulator approved in 2019. “Trikafta has changed our lives,” says Janalen, “Abby and Kati haven’t been hospitalized since. Rocky adds, “Our children might have medical challenges but they are so much more than that. We wouldn’t trade them for anyone else.’”

When Katie was five, the couple registered with an adoption agency and soon received a call: “You’re having a baby tomorrow!” The next day, they attended Keelan’s birth. Keelan, 11, called “Bubba” by his family, is an intelligent, friendly, voracious reader who composes his own electronic music. On their way home from the hospital with newborn Keelan, Janalen bought a pregnancy test. Eight months later she delivered Annie, 10, the family peacemaker. Annie loves golfing with her dad and has become a second mother to her siblings. Soon another agency called about a birth mother expecting a child. Would the Fischers like to meet her? “It seemed daunting, but the birth mother’s name wouldn’t leave my mind,” says Janalen. “We knew this baby was ours.” They flew to Atlanta for the birth of Kaleigh, 9. “We had three babies in 20 months!” Kaleigh loves to bake treats and has a talent for choreographing dances that match her outgoing personality. Less than a year after Kaleigh arrived, a birth couple from Wisconsin chose the Fischers to adopt Andrew, now 8. He receives treatment for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), ADHD and severe anxiety. He likes to explore tools and kitchen utensils, in particular spatulas – you’ll often find Andrew with a big smile on his face, waving a spatula. While raising their new family, the Fischers helped fund a Congolese orphanage and traveled there to visit. There they met a toddler named Bernard. After 17 months and seven

trips to the Democratic Republic of Congo, they brought him home. “He didn’t speak English and we didn’t speak French,” says Rocky, “but he is thriving.” Bernard has a gentle spirit and takes good care of the family’s dogs, Bailey and Max. Next came Emma, age six. She was adopted from China, has a heart defect, Down syndrome, ASD, and she’s nonverbal. Despite her challenges, Emma loves watching “Cocomelon,” swaying to music, and eating her favorite food-rice pudding. “Rocky and I had counseled couples through the IVF process into adoption,” says Janalen, “Then we tried IVF ourselves.” Their “caboose,” McKay, two, is a fan of dinosaurs, a ham for the camera, and can talk anyone into reading him a stack of books before bed. “We’ve met wonderful, diverse families since moving to Franklin a couple of years ago,” says Rocky, a marketing entrepreneur. The boys play football for the Franklin Cowboys, and the girls enjoy swimming with the Franklin Flippers. All of the children play the piano and have a love for music. “People ask us why we have so many kids, how do we afford it?” I say, "It’s the Lord’s money. If we provide love and a home, He’ll provide for us. And He has!”

Elephants are magnificent, intelligent creatures that are all too often taken from their natural habitats to be exploited in carnivals and circuses. Due to their unique needs, the care they receive isn’t always up to par. At the Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee, these animals have a place to live out their lives in beautiful, natural habitats where all their needs are met. The sanctuary currently houses nine elephants on its 3,060 acres, and has taken in a total of 28 elephants since it opened in 1995. “Our elephants come to us from all over North America,” says Sanctuary Education Manager Laura Roddy. “The majority of them were circus elephants, while some were confiscated by the government for violations against the Animal Welfare Act. Others were zoo elephants or privately-owned elephants.” At the sanctuary, elephants receive individualized care for life. “Every elephant comes with a different history and different needs,” she says. “Shirley came to the sanctuary at the age of 51 after 20 years as a lone elephant in a zoo in Louisiana. Before that, her leg was injured in a circus. We had to learn how to work with her different ability. When Shirley passed away in 2021, she was 72 years old and the second oldest elephant in North America at that time.” On average, elephants live between 45 and 50 years. The sanctuary's current elephants range in age from 37 to 60. Billie just celebrated her 60th birthday; Sissy's been at the sanctuary the longest, arriving in January of 2000; and their most recent occupant, Nosey, came to them in 2017. Historically, the Asian elephants and African elephants were always kept separate, but they have been doing introductions between an African and Asian elephant recently through a fence line. “They are completely different species from one another,” says Laura. “One of my favorite fun facts to tell students is that Asian elephants

are actually more closely related to woolly mammoths than they are to African elephants. They also speak somewhat different languages.” The sanctuary has a full-time veterinarian and veterinarian technician, one part-time veterinarian, plus on-site caregivers. They ensure all the elephants get plenty to eat and also have enjoyable enrichment activities, which helps keep them both mentally and physically stimulated. Sometimes it's a rope toy that they hide snacks in and hang up. Elephants eat between 200 and 300 pounds of food every day. In the summertime, they eat as much vegetation as they want, but the sanctuary does supplement their diet with a specialized feed. They also love fruits and vegetables. Overall, the Elephant Sanctuary has a two-part mission. “The first is to provide captive elephants with a safe haven dedicated to their wellbeing, and the second is educating the public on the complex needs of elephants and the crises facing elephants in the world,” she says. “We're trying to talk about living in a sustainable place where both elephants and humans alike can thrive.” A majority of their educational mission is done through distance learning. “We talk virtually to different schools all over the country and world on a daily basis,” says Laura. “Outreach is a way to hopefully change things in the future.” Visitors are not allowed to see the elephants in person. “We are a true sanctuary, which means we are closed to the public,” she says. “Our elephants have worked all of their lives. They've been in circuses or show business or on exhibition in some way, shape or form, so we want to give them the retirement they've earned and not have to worry about guests. There, visitors learn about elephants and how the elephants are cared for at the sanctuary without actually being on site. The sanctuary staff appreciates any and all donations to continue helping these exploited elephants live out their lives in peace and tranquility where they have the freedom to roam. “We are a nonprofit, so donations are

always beneficial,” she says. “I really love the idea of being able to ‘adopt’ an elephant and feel like you’re attached to that elephant. It’s a wonderful way to create that symbolic connection between people and animals.” Volunteers also are needed at the group's downtown Elephant Discovery Center. Even though people cannot work directly with the elephants, says Laura, they’re still helping and benefiting those elephants in some way. Another way to assist is by spreading the word about the crises facing elephants, such as poaching and declining habitats, and talking about ways to help.

Since 1947, Kilwins has been a celebrated part of Americana having earned a reputation for providing high-quality chocolates, ice cream, and confections combined with excellent service. Kilwins' heritage was built on the simple premise of creating products from the finest ingredients and providing customers with great service. When Kilwins owner Ashley Clark was 22 years old, she was living at home with her parents with a degree from Clemson University, working a job she’d had since she was 15 years old. Her dad posed the question, “Have you ever thought about owning a Kilwins franchise?” That was October 2012 and Kilwins in

Greenville, South Carolina was opened on Friday, September 27, 2013. For the next five years, Ashley and her husband, Landon, worked together to build a successful business with the mission of creating enjoyment and making people happy. They thought they were getting into the ice cream business, but what they soon realized was that they were in the people business. In 2018, Ashley was selected as the South Carolina Young Entrepreneur of the Year by the United States Small Business Association and in 2021, as the Inaugural Young ATHENA Leadership Award Recipient by the Greenville Chamber. This is without a doubt seen in the restaurant’s fare. Fifteen years ago, Charles Darby’s parents gave him sage advice: Take what you have and build what you want and need. His parents' joy and love for helping people set the standard for how Charles wanted to live his life. “I did not want a job - I wanted a way of life.” Charles’ passion for landscaping aligned perfectly with his personal value system. Landscaping affords him the opportunity to work and live close to his family, while helping others. Charles began his landscaping journey by working for a successful landscaping company. Determined to succeed, he did what his boss did and learned much in the process. Ambitious, young, self-motivated and comfortable with knowledge gained, Charles branched out on his own and launched Opportunity Landscapes and Nursery in 2012. Aptly named Opportunity Landscapes and Nursery “because I knew if I was given the opportunity I would supersede expectations with my ability.” Charles obtained his business license and started to beat the bushes. In his first week, he landed his first job which paid the equivalent of three months’ salary of his former job. He then struggled through a three-month drought. Not one to lose focus, Charles took all the outdoor jobs no one wanted

to do, both challenging and mundane. “I trusted that growth of the company would happen organically and soon I would be utilizing my skills for enhancing outdoor properties.” It took time to earn the respect of vendors, the industry, and clients. As his unique design skills and outstanding quality in landscape and hardscape installation became known, Charles started receiving multiple referrals. It is through passion for his landscape career that Charles can envision the future of plant and tree growth potential and thus provide the client with a broad range of choices. Charles states “I visualize the clients project in three, five, and ten years and can provide guidance on how to create a full and lush landscape and avoid the common landscape mistake of plant or tree overgrowth. Planting in layers with different textures can create a stunning and tranquil environment adding property value, while allowing the client the enjoyment of outdoor living.” The Opportunity Landscapes and Nursery approach is based on feeling, emotion, respect and obedience to nature. “Nature is our gift. She provides us with everything and sometimes we don’t appreciate it.” So many look from their windows at “dead” features - walls, fences, bricks and streets. Charles sees his strengths as “doing the job, leading the team, accountability, and overseeing the quality of our work. I have exceedingly high and exacting standards.” He loves that he can shine a light on others. “I want to give my workers the opportunity to be the star I know they can be.” Charles has created a motivating work environment where opportunities abound. His team is dedicated. “I will, and have, taken a good person over a good worker. I can train a good person to work but I cannot train a good worker to be a good person.” Business has grown through referrals and that means a lot to Charles. “I would rather have the respect of others than a million dollars.” So valued as a leader in the

industry, Charles is asked to consult on projects and to advise, teach and help others in the profession. Positioned in the cul-de-sac at 1006 Grigsby Hayes Court in Franklin is the new 35,000 square foot Williamson County Animal Center (WCAC). The award-winning facility houses a pet adoption area, cat and dog visitation rooms, an enclosed patio for cats, eight furnished free-roaming cat rooms (“Catios”), and unique dog pens and runs that open to the outside, a space designed for optimal care of adoptable animals. Inside the climate-controlled exercise and behavior training room is being used to provide behavior training to shelter animals. WCAC plans to host behavior training classes for pets and their owners in the coming months. Outside the beautiful back property provides a fenced puppy play yard, a large dog run, a wooded walking trail and a covered outdoor exercise yard pavilion. WCAC’s mission “To make Williamson County, Tennessee better for animals through adoption, education, enforcement, and pet population control” is being met through their various programs. The onsite veterinary office and surgery site is equipped to spay/neuter 8,000 animals each year. With an estimated 50,000 outdoor cats in Williamson County, the spay/neuter clinic at WCAC is having a huge impact on controlling the stray animal population in our community.

THE COMMUNITY EDUCATION CENTER HOSTS EVENTS, MEETINGS, AND YOUTH PROGRAMS INCLUDING: • Boy and Girl Scouts Pet Care Badges • Canine Advocate Program which teaches dog behavior awareness and bite prevention • Youth Service Days where youth build rabbit feeders, prepare lick mats for dogs, create enrichment toys, and more • Storytime at the Shelter (ages 3 - 5) allow children to bring a stuffed animal and listen to animal-related stories and songs (free) • Book Buddies Reading Program (ages 5 -12) provides a non-judgmental space for children to practice their reading skills by reading to and providing socialization for cats (free) Summer is kitten season which swells the number of kittens rescued and brought to the center. Approximately one-quarter of the summer kittens will spend time in foster care. Today there are 171 kittens in foster care, as many are simply too young for adoption. Volunteer Katrina Brown states, “The number of kittens needing to be fostered goes up everyday.” Community Outreach Coordinator, Scott Pieper adds, “Fosters help with capacity issues at the shelter, socialization of the animals and ultimately impact the adoptability of our animals.” Local Franklin resident and owner of A Fresh Space, Liz Jenkins, has been fostering kittens for 25 years. No More Tears Dry eye disease is prevalent all over the world and is reported to affect from 5% to 73% of the U.S. population and affects women slightly more than men. You might already be wondering why there is such a wide disparity in dry eye reporting. It is because dry eye has never been well defined, well understood or effectively treated. It has always been considered to be chronic and unfixable. Does dry eye include redness, itching, burning or generalized inflammation? Does it occur in teenagers or the elderly? Is it just dryness or can it be watery eyes? The answers to the above questions is all of the above. And this explains the side range of incidence and it depends on how you define it. Dry eye disease is an advanced stage of eyelid inflammation which exists in all of us to some degree. But the problem is that this biofilm-induced inflammation which usually starts in childhood, and causes no acute symptoms until it has effectively destroyed the glands that produce our tears. Loss of our tear-producing glands progresses slowly and imperceptibly

until it is nearly too late to do anything about it. It is critically important that society realize that loss of our tear glands is very similar to losing our teeth without good oral hygiene. Plaque is essentially a biofilm of the mouth that needs to be cleaned off of the teeth regularly to prevent gingivitis and tooth loss. A biofilm also develops on the eyelid and will cause chronic eyelid inflammation (blepharitis) that destroys the tear glands. Good eyelid hygiene and lid margin cleaning by an eye doctor should begin in the teenage years and continue throughout life. Doing so should help prevent loss of the tear glands before it begins. Once someone has dry eye they have already lost a significant portion of their tear glands. Treatment then requires regular and effective biofilm removal from all aspects of the eyelid. Currently, there are only two centers in the country that are fixing this disease. One is in Brentwood and one in Atlanta. Increasing awareness that dry eye starts without symptoms, it can be prevented and yes, it can finally be cured, is the first step.
