“When my wife and I were looking for a trust attorney, we interviewed four different attorneys. We were most impressed by Justin Gilbert’s breadth and depth of knowledge. He listened carefully to our needs and requirements and he recommended we create a grantor trust for our taxable assets and retirement trust for our pretax assets. He was the only attorney who was knowledgeable about retirement trust and the benefits such trust would offer. I am a very detailed person, I read every word of the documents and I require that I understand everything in the trusts. Justin answered all my questions to my satisfaction and readily agreed to make changes that I wished to make. At no time did Justin show impatience with my requests or inquiries. Justin always met his commitments to deliver draft documents or changes there to. There will come a time when our children will need an attorney’s services to settle our estate in accordance with the terms of our trusts. My instructions to them is to employ and depend on Justin’s services. I HIGHLY recommend Justin to anyone who needs a trust attorney. I am very hard to please because I like perfection. That is what I pay for and Justin delivered.” – David Albee

Sweet Summertime

July 2022 PUBLISHER

Athena West | athena.west@citylifestyle.com EDITOR

Maria Dinoia | maria.dinoia@citylifestyle.com

Summer's here! Everybody's always looking for ways to have a little adventure each summer and you've come to the right place. In the pages of this issue, you'll find lots of ideas on how to bring a little adventure to your summertime fun! For starters, check out our cover star Josh Groban at FirstBank Amphitheater on July 19th. His impressive voice and genuine talent will make it quite the show. We add to your bucket list of adventure by suggesting a road trip to St. Louis, taking up pickleball, visiting a local farmer's market and seeing some community theatre. But if you're feeling like a bucket list of activities is not your thing, embrace those “lazy days of summer.” Some of the best times spent in summer are backyard barbecues with friends, making s’mores by a fire pit, spending a day on the water, eating ice cream on a hot summer day, or simply taking in a starry night sky with someone you love. The signs of summer are all around us. Whatever you choose, enjoy your July. Warmly,

After spending a lifetime farming in the community, Williamson County native, Dwight Lynch, opened Riverside Antiques in 1996 as a hobby and out of his love for vintage things. Lynch instilled his hard work ethic to his daughter, Lynda McGuire. Lynda stepped into working at her father’s antique store when her children began school, learning the day-to-day of running a business and nurturing relationships in the community. “We want everyone who comes into our store to leave feeling like they just visited family,” states McGuire. In 2017, Lynch decided to retire and passed the store down to Lynda and her husband, Tom. After becoming owners of the store, Tom and Lynda decided it was time to rebrand and changed the name to Riverside Franklin. “We, along with our team, worked day and night painting, taking out walls, and refreshing the store. We wanted to put our touch onto the great business my dad started. We will forever be grateful for the opportunity he gave us,” reminisces Lynda. Mr. Lynch still stops by to check in and both the McGuires’ sons, Cole and Luke, help with the family business as much as they can. At any given time you could walk in Riverside Franklin and see four generations behind the counter. “We absolutely love Franklin. As a 5th generation Franklin native, my roots run deep here. Tom and I were married here 30 years ago and we’ve raised our family here. Franklin is home and always will be. We are thankful and blessed to have our business in such a supportive community,” says McGuire.

Josh Groban On Tour IN ‘HARMONY’ WITH HIS MUSIC

ARTICLE BY MARIA DINOIA PHOTOGRAPHY BY DOUG INGLISH

Josh Groban said “After two years of sitting around {due to Covid}, everybody just shot out of a cannon.” The multi-platinum singer/ songwriter himself is among those feeling pumped and energetic, as he has been on the road since June 7 and will be touring through August, including a stop in Franklin’s FirstBank Amphitheater on July 19. His favorite part about being on the road? “The connectivity. Ever since I was a little kid, whether I was doing musical theatre or a showcase for the school class, there is something about the feeling of sharing in a musical connection that is unlike anything else. And it’s the gift of travel, being able see the country, drive across America and see all the amazing, beautiful cities and catch as many baseball games as I can. Seeing all those faces. Oftentimes, music can be isolating. You’re in a hotel room, on a tour bus, back home. It’s a perspective giver to get out and see who’s there and who wants to be there and to hear you. It gives you everything you need.”

“I just love making music. It’s my favorite thing that I do.” — Josh Groban

When he stops in Franklin for his Harmony tour, fans can expect him to sing some classics. Groban says, “At this point I can’t believe I have so many songs to choose from when I put a set list together. They’re all my children. It’s always really gratifying to sing music that I wrote, that came from the heart, so sitting down and playing the piano and playing songs that started as a thought in my room is a really cool feeling. But I also love singing classics like “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” When you get full orchestrations like that, there’s something about those classics that continue to move you.” With one of the most dynamic voices of a generation, you’d think the 41-year-old has been singing since he was in the womb. But he didn’t start singing until he was 13-years-old. Groban says, “I always knew I liked to sing, but I was very shy, kind of an introvert who had a hard time making friends. I was just inside myself. I thought I’d join the choir and sit in the back row and just kind of blend in. But there was a teacher that encouraged something in me, and he gave me a solo. Groban never forgot him. “When I was doing my residency at Radio City Music Hall, I flew that teacher out to New York City and gave him a big shout out. He realized that singing and music was a language for me that would

40

M UST SE E | A RTS + CU LTURE

bring me out of my shell. And I haven’t looked back since.” Groban has been fortunate to sing over the years with the likes of Kelly Clarkson, Faith Hill, Andrea Bocelli, Sarah Maclachlan, Celine Dion, Audra McDonald and many more. “I know I’ve been spoiled by the voices I’ve been able to meld with. I’ve always wanted to perform with Bjork - I’ve been obsessed with her since I was a kid. There are some incredible new artists I’d love to collaborate with. Charlie Puth is an incredible songwriter. Carrie Underwood, whose voice I love a lot. Lots of great vocalists.” In addition to singing, Groban’s also been acting in diverse and random roles since 2011. He says, "I was an acting major in college before I was discovered as a singer. I love disappearing into roles. I love reaching people through storytelling. And that can happen through a great script or a great song. It doesn’t have to be something you experience personally, but you want to tell the story. My acting portfolio is a lot more diverse than the singing. I love doing stuff that’s a little bit different than the music." When he makes his way to Franklin later this month, he says, "There’s always a home-cooked meal waiting for me. I’ve got friends there that are producers. It’s an incredible music town." Marketing Magic

Sometimes if you can’t find what you’re looking for, you have to create it yourself. When Shannon LeBlanc was ready to rebrand her photography business, which started as family portraiture and lifestyle photography in 2012, she struggled to find a brand photographer with the same perspective. She realized there was a niche that needed to be filled in the area, so she taught herself and expanded her business to offer brand photography her way. Investing in quality photos is a smart move for any business. No one likes to look at stock photos, selfies, or blurry or outdated photos on websites and social media. Shannon likes to tie in the lifestyle photography aspect to the brand photos. She explains, “I knew I didn’t want to just focus on what they do, but also what makes them who they are.” Tastefully incorporating the person’s interests and individuality in photos makes them stand out and be more relatable when people are researching the business. Clients will always get more than a standard headshot. Shannon continues, “I’m more than just my camera. I’m a mom. My husband and I own businesses. I’m multi-faceted and I want that to be depicted in still photos. Normally I have a 44 oz. CONTINUED >

of unsweetened iced tea from Sonic. So for my most recent brand shoot, I took photos with that 44 oz. iced tea because that’s just who I am.” Shannon is a mother to 10-year-old Eloise and 9-year-old Oliver. Her husband, Daniel, is an entrepreneur whose latest venture is Hayes Street Fitness in the Broadwest building in Nashville. He bought Shannon her first camera when she was pregnant with their first child, and has been her biggest supporter. Shannon offers multiple types of packages based on the client’s needs that result in a gallery of their own personalized, professional photos. She says, “I have super new clients who have no idea what branding is, and clients who have already gone through a full brand design and have a logo, all of their fonts and colors, and know the audience they’re reaching.” She walks them through the entire month-long process, working as a team from the start. The first step is completing a detailed questionnaire to figure out their story and what needs to be accomplished. Then they are sent a PDF guide of outfit and boutique recommendations, contacts for makeup artists and hair stylists, and anyone else they could need to make them feel their best while being photographed. She also provides a checklist and tips the clients can use throughout the month to make sure they’re prepared and can simply enjoy themselves on photoshoot day. Shannon makes everything stress-free and sets clients up for success. She says, “For my bigger packages, they also receive an Instagram mockup, so I take nine of their photos and put them on a faux Instagram layout with caption ideas for each photo so I can give them that jumping-off point.” By the end of the session, she and her client are basically best friends. Shannon’s photography has been published nationally for projects with people such as fitness guru Erin Oprea and local influencer Jenny Reimold. She photographed the content for Jenny’s Instagram page for a while and partnered with her for several Home Goods ad campaigns. Her goal in the next year is to have her own studio in Franklin. She says, “I’m excited because it’s going to have designated spaces like a faux office space completely furnished, a faux kitchen, a living room with fun backdrops, and a full-prop closet. "So I’m crossing my fingers on that - I got a big ole vision!" She currently rents a bright white studio perfect for headshots. Depending on the package, they’ll also choose locations that complement the business such as downtown Franklin, co-working spaces, coffee shops, or model homes. Shannon LeBlanc does everything she can to make her client’s brand photography experience a magical one. Also a Disney vacation planner, she likes to say she’s the “Fairy Godmother of brand photos,” ready to give businesses a glow-up. lifestylebyleblanc.com

WITH UKRANIAN-BORN NATALYA DROZHIZHIN ARTICLE BY MARIA DINOIA

Natalya Drozhizhin grew up in a small farming town in Ukraine. Population? 300 people. Her family originated the term 'farm to table,' literally living off their garden. Sometimes food was scarce but Natalya always remembered her mom's easy, quick and delicious meals. Her family moved to the United States when Natalya was 13-years-old. School was difficult for Natalya, as she didn't speak a word of English. "I loved America, but I hated the fact that I couldn't understand anything. I would go to school, come home and cry." Looking back, she adds, "I think coming as a teenager to a new country is like the worst thing ever. It was really tough." One thing her family all agreed upon was that coming to America was an opportunity. An opportunity to make money. So in spite of their struggles, Natalya says, "You're in a new country. Everything's amazing. You get this food in the store. Anything you want was there. 1991 was when Ukraine broke away from the Soviet Union. We moved to Seattle in 1998. It was only seven years that Ukraine had its own freedom. Things had started to get better, but they were not like here." Natalya met her husband Tim (who is from Russia) and they have two boys, Jacob and Ethan. When they were first married, the couple was in the insurance business. They were selling auto and home insurance at a nationwide top agency and were so busy that they eventually burned out. They wanted to spend more time with their young boys and that's when Natalya's blog was born. In 2010, she created a Facebook group where she shared easy recipes for busy, tired moms. Eventually, it became so popular, Natalya turned to her web developer husband to create a website for her. CONTINUED >

"Mom's dish kind of just took off," says Natalya. "I never thought about it as a business initially because I was in this community of moms. This is going to be my way of serving the community - serving other moms, helping other moms. I took a leap of faith." Today, the Drozhizhins reside in Franklin and have made MomsDish a community of people who want to go back to Mom’s basics and are dedicated to making the kitchen the centerpiece of their homes. Their 46,000+ followers on Instagram learn quick, easy recipes for breads, breakfasts, meats, desserts, some specialty Ukrainian dishes and more. Natalya wants everyone to fall in love with cooking as she has so she makes it simple. Natalya and her husband Tim are grateful to their parents for bringing them here. Natalya says, "My parents were 47 years old at the time. It's not young. It's a new country, new language, learning everything. But they did it for us. And it's amazing." MomsDish.com

Meet Me In St. Louis ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY BRIANNA MELANSON

Did you know St. Louis, Missouri is only a 5-hour road trip from Franklin? Known for the iconic 630-foot Arch, the starting point for the Lewis and Clark expedition, and the Old Courthouse that held the Dred Scott trials, St. Louis is rich in history. Your trip to St. Louis wouldn’t be complete without the iconic BBQ and a glass of Budweiser. There’s so much to learn, eat, and explore on a weekend getaway.

56

R OA D T R IP | TR AVEL

For starters, take the tram to the top of the Gateway Arch. The downtown view at the top is incredible and you can see Missouri on one side and Illinois on the other. The Arch is a National Park and has a museum underneath that explains how it was built. Make sure to buy your tram tickets in advance! While shopping in Central West End, stop in the World Chess Hall of Fame to discover engaging exhibits, but also test your skills and learn new strategies. The collection and gift shop feature the most beautifully crafted and intricate chess sets. Don’t forget to take a picture with the largest chess piece in the world which won a Guinness Record in 2018. Whether you’re an experienced chess player, or just a fan of The Queen’s Gambit, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

The Missouri Botanical Garden is beautiful this time of year! There are all different types of gardens and displays to observe that change by the season. The Climatron shows off thousands of tropical plants and the Butterfly House hosts about 2,000 butterflies. Stroll through the 14 acres of the Japanese Garden which contains authentic Japanese landscaping, bridges and lanterns. There are endless activities for families or a perfect date. Everyone will tell you to have BBQ and we completely agree. Salt & Smoke takes the amazing traditional flavors up a notch with their homemade sauces and upscale vibe. St. Louis BBQ is no joke, but they’re also known for fried ravioli and gooey butter cake.

In the Italian neighborhood, The Hill, visit Mama Toscano's. The building has been in the Toscano family for over 90 years. The family’s fried ravioli is a three-day process and hand rolled daily. Nana Kate’s recipe for these “little pillows” has been passed down for generations and is consistently amazing because of the family’s devotion to quality and service. Gooey butter cake was a happy accident, which happened when a local baker put the wrong proportions of butter into his coffee cake batter. You’ll find the most flavors, a whopping 73, available at Park Avenue Coffee. Customer favorites include red velvet, triple chocolate and white chocolate raspberry. St. Louis is where Budweiser was born in 1876, so why not enjoy one where it all started? You’ll be sure to find a refreshing drink at the biergarten which features 18 beers on draught. The Anheuser-Busch Brewery is the largest brewery site in the U.S. and is full of history and tradition. Visit the famous Clydesdales and get a free beer on the Day Fresh tour or Clydesdale VIP tour. There is so much to explore on the campus and this would make for a great rainy-day activity!

Take in 360 views of the city, 400 feet high, at Three Sixty rooftop bar at the top of the Hilton hotel. You’ll find innovative cocktails and an extensive wine list. On game day, you’ll be able to view the entire Busch baseball stadium from here. You could honestly spend a whole weekend just exploring the gorgeous Union Station hotel. You

can walk right to the aquarium, Ferris wheel, restaurants, and old fashioned soda shop. Every night starting at 5 p.m., there is a light show in the Grand Hall lobby. Sit at the bar and watch the ceiling come alive in a magical 3D experience. ExploreStLouis.com

THE AUTUMN ARTIST INTERACTIVE 62

NOW OP E N | ARTS + CU LTURE

ONE WEEK COULD MAKE YOU A STAR Franklin’s award-winning pianist, Dr. Graciella Kowalczyk, is joining forces with vocal instructor Brett Manning and guitarist Mario DaSilva to offer aspiring musical artists a new program designed to accelerate them down the road to stardom called The Autumn Artist Interactive – a one-week intensive training in vocals, instruments, songwriting, and more.

Born in France, Graciella grew up attending music schools across Europe including the Chopin School of Music in Warsaw, Poland and the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow, Russia before finally receiving a doctorate in piano performance from the University of Kansas. Topping that off with several first prize awards in music competitions, Graciella boasts a stellar resume.

ARTICLE BY JESSICA WAYMAN

PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

As a piano professor instructing from her own studio in Franklin, Graciella’s students have received scholarships to Boston University and other top schools and are winners of several competitions in classical piano. Brett Manning is a world-renowned vocal coach who has helped thousands of singers improve their talent including Taylor Swift, Keith Urban and more. Mario DaSilva is a studied classical guitarist with years of experience in musical education bringing together a rich fusion of influences and styles including flamenco and commercial. In this seven-day program, students will learn how to compose songs and to accompany themselves using piano and guitar.

Dr. Graciella Kowalczyk with a student.

“Many of the singers around here play a little bit of guitar but struggle with being able to read music and it’s so much easier for them to stay in tune while they play piano,” said Graciella. The program includes piano lessons, guitar lessons, vocal lessons, and even pilates, yoga and breathing lessons. Students will also learn how to create a home studio and to record music. The program’s big finale is a live performance held at the Factory in Franklin and a recording of the artist’s own composition. “They’re going to devote one week and probably achieve more than they would in a year of going to different people and training a little bit here and there,” said Graciella. The Autumn Artist Interactive will quickly take your rising music career to the next level. For Graciella, the inspiration behind it all is sharing the benefits of musical training. Reading and playing music simultaneously involve the use of eyes, ears, muscles in the hands and feet, and breathing which, as a result, improves hand-eye coordination and dexterity. Music can also improve language comprehension by enhancing the ability to learn words and pronunciation. In addition to sharpening intellectual skills, music may even benefit people emotionally and behaviorally as it provides a sense of accomplishment and self-confidence. The Autumn Artist Interactive welcomes auditioners ages 14 and up. AutumnArtist.org

While everyone is familiar with tennis, many have no idea what pickleball is, but that’s quickly changing. Pickleball is now the fastest growing sport in America. “It's kind of a combination of tennis, ping pong, and badminton,” says Woody Bibb, who is on the board of Music City Pickleball in Franklin. “What's great about it is it’s something that people of all different levels can play.” Len Dinoia, co-owner of The Tennis Store in Franklin adds, “The learning curve is not a tennis learning curve. It's something that people can start to enjoy right away. It’s also great how inclusive it is - you have folks from all walks of life, whether young, old, tennis players, non-tennis players, and racquetball players, all converging on this sport.” Len has seen a great surge in the demand for pickleball equipment. “We're about even with tennis rackets and pickleball paddles now,” he says. “I think the only thing holding back the sport from further growth is more pickleball courts.” The court, explains Woody, is about half the size of a tennis court, and players use wiffle balls and paddles. “The games are a lot quicker too than tennis. You keep score kind of like volleyball in that you play to 11 points, but you only score when you're serving.” He says it's easier on people with knee or hip injuries because the movement isn't as dramatic. As a tennis player, Woody likes that pickleball can also be quite competitive depending on who you team up with. He can play a casual, more relaxed game with friends and family, but also play a more hard-core game with athletes like himself using more strategic hits. The other great thing about the sport is it can be played indoors and outdoors.

And because of the size of the court, it’s also a much more social game. When Woody first found out about the sport, he went to The Tennis Store to buy equipment. “Len was a big part of helping me get started,” he says. “There are subtle differences in equipment. You can have really firm wooden paddles or the more rubbery ones where you can put a lot of spin on the ball. IMPROVING YOUR WORLD AND YOUR WINDOWS TO IT ARTICLE BY ED ATLAS PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED In a very literal sense, the windows in your house are your windows to the world. But it’s important to keep certain elements of the world on the side of the panes where they belong. “Far beyond the modern comforts that efficient and properly sealed windows provide, they work as a preservative and protector of your home and family,” says Efficiency Home Improvements (EHI) founder, Lou Beltran. “Water and insects are the more common invaders, but spiders, squirrels and other pests love an unsealed opening. You don't want these guys in your house destroying your investment.” Beltran started the company in 2006 and, after a decade of steady growth, his longtime friend Jim Sanders came aboard as sales partner in 2016. The two have known each other since their days with Nashville-based footwear retailer, Genesco. “I enjoy going into someone’s home and helping them realize their vision,” says Sanders. “I love it when I can help someone open a space with a great view that they were never able to take advantage of before.” EHI has donated time, materials and financial support to numerous organizations including Both Hands, Williamson County Sheriff’s Office, Walk to End Alzheimer’s, Snooty Giggles Dog Rescue, High Hopes Development Center, Gigi’s Playhouse and GraceWorks Ministries. It’s also been a source of renewal for people who have fallen on hard times. “We get a chance to work with young guys who just need someone to take a chance on them,” says Beltran. “Our culture provides them with an opportunity to take ownership and pride in what they do. I’ve seen boys become men, then husbands and fathers. They learn how to save money and take care of both the material things they buy and the relationships they establish, and talk openly about our faith." According to Beltran, the commitment to philanthropy, faith and craftsmanship sets EHI apart. “The crews have a chemistry like that of a championship sports team,” he says. “They’re relaxed and have fun with one another, but they are incredibly serious about what they do and how well they do it. Quality matters to us. It matters in the materials we use and the people we hire.” EfficiencyHomeImprovements.com

Franklin Couple Brings New Energy to Middle Tennessee’s Theatre Community ARTICLE BY JENNIFER BENNHOFF PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANTHONY MATULA OF MA2LA

On the first d ay o f h er f reshman y ear a t Belmont University, Annabelle Fox from Wilton, Connecticut walked into a musical theatre seminar that changed the course of her life. “The professor told the students to introduce themselves to someone new, so I turned around and saw this guy with the most beautiful eyes, one brown and one green.” That young man was Douglas Waterbury-Tieman, a senior fiddle player earning his bachelor’s degree in music. The two kept running into each other on campus – “He was stalking me,” Annabelle laughs – and dated for over six years before marrying in 2016. Annabelle, 30, has enjoyed a musical theatre career in off-Broadway and regional productions along the East Coast, and performed in “The Sound of Music,” “Les Miserables” and “Fiddler on the Roof” with Studio Tenn in Franklin. Douglas, 32, from Georgia and Kentucky, is also an off-Broadway and Studio Tenn veteran, and he’s the founder of New Musical Theatre Nashville. NMTN recently partnered with the Johnny Mercer Writers Grove to create a monthly gathering for local songwriters and playwrights interested in creating new musicals. The salon-style evenings

give professional writers an opportunity to read scenes and play new songs for feedback from their peers. In 2020, the couple was living in New York and working in theatre when the pandemic hit. “When we were at Belmont, we would visit Franklin, see shows and perform with Studio Tenn,” Annabelle says. “It seemed like a far-fetched dream for us to actually live here.” In August of 2020, they made the move. “It’s a funny coincidence because I was in The Roundabout Theatre production of “The Robber Bridegroom,” which Douglas explains is a show about the Natchez Trace. “When we moved to Franklin, I became the landscape operations manager for a farm near the Natchez Trace. I play the soundtrack while I work!” “Franklin is the perfect place to build a community-theatre relationship,” says Annabelle. Plus, their current theatre project was conceived here in 2014 while both were performing in “Fiddler on the Roof.” “I thought about why Medieval religious leaders called the violin – or “fiddle” -- the “devil’s box,” Douglas says. “Fiddle music inspired dancing, merriment, and fame for musicians." His folk musical begins with a retelling of the Book of Genesis and features The Angel Band, God and Lucifer, Adam & Eve, Douglas as “Johnny Baker,” and Annabelle as “Abigail,” a young woman inspired to dance and seek adventure after meeting Johnny. The story weaves together themes of pride, jealousy, a family secret and romance, and is influenced by the Georgia mountains, Kentucky bluegrass, with some jubilant Grand Ole Opry mixed in. “I wanted to write something that could play on Broadway one night and in Branson the next,” says Douglas. In 2020 he received a Frank Young Fund Writers Residency grant, enabling a “Johnny” concert series at Connecticut’s Goodspeed that generated excitement for the show’s first run. “It’s surreal to finally have a full production,” says Annabelle, “because it has been in development since 2014.” The show will run at the Cumberland County Playhouse in Crossville, Tennessee from November 17 thru December 18, produced by a crew of Broadway veterans. The show’s Music Supervisor Scott Wasserman has worked on “Hamilton” and “Dear Evan Hansen,” among many others. Bryce McDonald, the Playhouse’s producing director, has been a huge supporter of the show from its early days. Finally, congratulations are in order for the couple’s most recent – and most important – collaboration: Their son Oliver James was born on April 29, 2022! The Power of Emotional Intelligence or EQ in Schools Terry Morris--Ironwood Academy

(EXCERPTS FROM IRONWOOD ACADEMY’S PROPRIETARY EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE (EQ) CURRICULUM)

ARTICLE BY TERRY MORRIS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY POINTS OF VIEW PHOTOGRAPHY

80

EDU CAT ION COR N E R | EDUCATI ON

Karis went home to hear her parents having a muffled “discussion” in the kitchen. When she walked in, they abruptly stopped talking. Karis had just come from an EQ lesson at school, so she said to her parents, “Wow, I see a lot of non-verbal cues going on between you two.” Her parents were busted (and naturally surprised by her articulate observation), but the encounter then led to a healthy conversation about how families communicate with one another and with others.

GETTING COMFORTABLE WITH CONFLICT As parents, we spend a lot of time and money trying to give our kids the best advantages possible. But the reality is, kids who live, love, and lead well, live in environments where they can build what is behind their eyes—their emotional and relational brain. Our ability to embrace negative emotion is critical to emotional safety. We have to get comfortable embracing difficult emotions so that we can show up for others in their pain.

EQ OVER IQ Research suggests that young people today are less psychologically prepared for the workforce than any generation in the last 75 years. 1. Teen stress rivals that of adults. 2. The research on the power of emotional intelligence to increase life satisfaction and academic outcomes for kids as early as preschool and success outcomes for business leaders is robust. 3. Google conducted a major study of its hiring process. At the time, they were naturally hiring for the hard skills (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). What they found in their study, however, was that for their top employees and most productive teams, the hard skills were coming in dead last. Instead, the top three skills of their top employees, in order, were emotional safety, emotional intelligence, and empathy. These soft skills have become what many companies now prioritize for their top leaders. 4. Mastering these so-called “soft skills” is a greater determinant for a person’s success in life than academic achievement.

SO WHAT IS EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE? Generally speaking, it is the ability to know what it is that I’m feeling, why I’m feeling that way, and my ability to know what another person is feeling and why he/she feels that way.

Knowing how I feel is self- awareness. The more self-aware I am, the greater my ability to show and be truly present for others without making their pain about me. The more others-aware I am, the more empathetic I can be. Unlike IQ (intelligence quotient), EQ (emotional quotient) can grow and develop over time. Individuals becomes more emotionally intelligent with practice. In today’s society, kindness and respect for others, and especially tolerance for others’ viewpoints, have taken a back seat to impulsive, unfiltered and hurtful comments. Three years ago, Ironwood Academy, based in Franklin, collaborated with national Christian child development expert, Dr. Joshua Straub, to curate a first-of-its-kind emotional intelligence (EQ ) curriculum that is taught to all students in grades K-12. Terry Morris, executive director of Ironwood, commented, “Our objective is to provide an emotionally-safe environment in which students (and parents) are given specific tools to identify and regulate emotions and, just as importantly, to recognize and respect others’ feelings. The curriculum includes training on neurobiological concepts regarding brain structure, development and function; healthy problem-solving and coping skills; cognitive flexibility and language processing; as well as teaching and practicing listening and social skills.” Ironwood's EQ course is being used as the pilot program for a national emotional intelligence program that will hopefully be available to all schools. It is research-based wherein pre- and post-assessments are conducted for positive outcomes supported by data. Dr. Josh Straub remarked, “The EQ curriculum is at the intersection of psychology and spirituality, providing essential life skills that are rarely taught in schools. Ironwood is at the forefront of this movement.” In addition to the core academic subjects, all students receive weekly small group instruction and coaching in EQ designed to build self- esteem, improve communication skills, and increase empathy for others. Ironwood’s goal is to create and sustain spaces and places in which students can learn and thrive—free from anxiety and depression. For more information about the EQ program for schools, please visit www.ironwoodacademy.org. To follow Dr. Straub, visit www.famousathome.com JULY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . MEET THE TASSONES

THE FRIENDLY FACES BEHIND THE FIVE POINTS FRANKLIN MARKET ARTICLE BY LISA VALENTINE PHOTOGRAPHY BY THE TASSONES

FAR M E R S M A R K E T | LOCAL S E RVI CE S

Anyone who has visited Franklin knows that the town’s quintessential charm not only comes from the shops on Main Street, but also from the people who make up the Franklin community and the traditions that bring them together. One of Franklin’s newer yet beloved town traditions is the Five Points Franklin Market, where locals and visitors alike can be found milling around on Tuesday evenings from May to October. Established in May of 2021 by husband-and-wife duo Danny and Amy Tassone, the Five Points Franklin Market has become a favorite place to grab a bite to eat, buy locally grown produce, check out handmade artisan goods, and have fun with the family. “I grew up in the food business,” says Danny. “My family runs a 350-acre farm in Upstate New York. I grew up doing farmers’ markets when I was little. We also had a grocery store.” Most of Franklin knows Danny as the longtime owner of local favorite Ellie’s Old Fashioned Doughnuts. “My main business [for the donut shop] is the Franklin Farmers Market on Saturdays,” he shares. “So I just thought that Franklin could use a weekday market in Downtown Franklin.” With their family and the donut business already keeping them busy, the Tassones dove right into bringing the Five Points Franklin Market to life in the prime location on Fifth Avenue in the parking lot behind Starbucks right off Main Street. Like a love story straight from a movie, Danny and Amy actually met at the Saturday Franklin Farmers Market! “The whole farmers market business is very personal to

us,” shares Amy. The couple even kicked off the 2022 season of the Five Points Franklin Market on their wedding anniversary this year. The Tuesday evening market is the perfect spot for families to come and enjoy quality time together. “We do really try to cater to the families and the kids, so we always have activities out there for kids,” says Amy. As a former children’s minister, she places great importance on bringing joy to the children in the community, providing everything from activities and games to inflatables for them to enjoy at the market. “It’s really a spot where people can come and shop, then also get a bite to eat and hang out and we have live music every week,” she shares. The Tassones are grateful to play a role in bringing the community together to enjoy music, friendship, and everything that the Franklin community has to offer. “This is our home. Though we aren’t originally from here, we’ve both been here each 25 years almost. It’s a lovely community,” says Amy. “Yes, it has grown exponentially since each of us both moved here, but the downtown is just the classic kind of Main Street community in the look, but also in the feel. We love small business. We have our small business ourselves. It just gives an outlet for someone who is starting a business, with the market setting to be a good place to get started with that. Franklin is just a friendly, fun town to be in and so we love supporting our community and providing an opportunity for other people to get their business out there and support themselves and their families.”

Finding Strength In The Face Of Adversity ARTICLE BY KAREN CREASON | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

94

AT H LE T E LIF E | FITNESS

Scott O’Neil

Growing up in the foster care system, Scott O’Neil learned to step up when faced with adversity. To hear him tell it, “That’s life. I had a bumpy ride but I had to beat the odds. Adversity motivates me.” Enlisting in the Marine Corps at 18, Scott states, “I had a vision on deployment that I was going to change my life and the lives of the people around me. I found working out was a true passion. I understood it. I helped others. I saw results from the routines I created. We had a gruesome first deployment and working out helped me get through it.” Creating a “gym” out of sandbags and other miscellaneous items in Afghanistan, Scott initially learned all he could about personal training and fitness through books. After serving our country for four years, Scott moved to Los Angeles. With an empty resume, he bussed tables, scraping by while trying to earn enough money to take personal training and group training certification courses. After finally becoming certified, he learned the hard way that gyms don’t pay their instructors nearly as much as he thought. Facing multiple evictions, couch surfing the city and, at times, resorting to sleeping in his car, Scott was still studying and creating routines for the small numbers of clients he retained. “I refused to take another career path. I knew if I suffered then, one day it would be worth it.”

Suffering from PTSD, facing all the issues that came with transitioning to society after the Marines, and with no money or place to truly call home, Scott says, “I was so lost and felt so empty. I had a vision but so many obstacles. I fell into deep dark places.” Scott decided he needed a “mental reset.” He moved to Hawaii with his then girlfriend (now wife) Joanna and, using the GI Bill, enrolled in the Maui Academy of Healing Arts and studied Sports and Therapeutic Massage. The pair returned to California where Scott studied sports rehabilitation and business, ultimately earning his Bachelor's degree. With newly gained confidence and skills, Scott built his own training company. “I was killing it! I had so many clients that were injured in some way but still needed training. I would train them from my apartment complex gym. I rarely took days off. I loved it too much.” After a year of this new success, Scott was approved for his own gym. Ironically, at the same time, Joanna's family was in need of help in the Bahamas. “Despite the amazing opportunity in front of me, there was no hesitation. Joanna put aside personal goals for me [in Maui]. We are a team.” After three years in Exuma, Scott and Joanna decided it was time to move to Nashville to pursue their vision and create a gym “like nothing you have ever seen before.” In March, they opened their CONTINUED >

“I just want to keep setting goals and conquering them. In this field, your objective is for the client to be successful.” first small location “Platinum Reform-Pilates” in Brentwood. In this location, Joanna trains her clients in Reformer Pilates. Shortly after opening Platinum Reform-Pilates Brentwood, ground was broken for Platinum Reform’s signature gym. Located at 4000 Longpoint Way in Franklin and set to open in early fall, the 6,200 square feet of individual class space will offer HITT, row, spin, boxing, pilates, and personal training under one membership option. Scott states “I want everyone to experience all classes without the hassle of multiple contracts, locations, and memberships. A one-stop shop for everything. Instructors are the backbone to each gym and it's time they feel that way. I plan to let them run their classes how they want as long as we stick to the fundamentals of fitness.” When asked if he feels successful being on the verge of opening one of the biggest gyms in the area

as well as his first of many Platinum Reforms, Scott replies, “I am not sure when someone is supposed to feel that way. I just want to keep setting goals and conquering them. In this field, your objective is for the client to be successful. My main goal is to be able to bring all the fitness communities together, and when that happens I will find something else I can do to help others.” Ever mindful of his journey so far, Scott remains humble yet competitive and hungry. Currently building his dream home in Franklin, enjoying married life with his best friend and wife, Joanna, living life with their five dogs, and starting the fitness revolution with Platinum Reform, Scott can only be thankful for his strength and ability to overcome adversity. Growing up on a tour bus and watching her mom and dad perform with their chart-topping country band, Baillie & the Boys, Franklin native Alyssa Bonagura always knew she would follow in their footsteps. “I just remember wanting to sing,” she says. “I ran out on stage with my mom when I was like two years old and she said, ‘Okay, you want to sing something?’ And so I sang in front of 20,000 people.” At the age of three, Alyssa performed on the Ralph Emery television show, "Nashville Now," and her rendition of Leslie Gore’s “It’s My Party” thrilled millions of national viewers. By the time she was seven, Alyssa started creating her own music. “My parents would leave instruments around and so I started on the piano when I was three and just dove into how to listen and play by ear.” Around age 10, she learned to play the guitar, and shortly thereafter, recorded a duet with Kenny Rogers for a Christmas CD. As Alyssa got older, she regularly sang with Baillie & the Boys, and then when she was 16, was asked to open for Marty Stuart and the Fabulous Superlatives. During this time, she also became a go-to session singer for artists like Vince Gill and Matt Maher. When it was time for college, she enrolled in the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts, which was founded by Sir Paul McCartney, from whom she would later receive her college diploma. “I started recording my own music in the UK and released my first album in 2010 called The English Diaries,” says Alyssa. After Liverpool rock star Pete Wylie asked her to join his band, they not only opened for The Who and Ringo Starr, but also played for the Queen at her Royal Variety Performance show. After graduation, she came back to the States. “I became really inspired by popular music, and I released an album called Love Hard in 2012. After that, I made the record Road Less Traveled in 2016 and that was really me coming into my own again and remembering who I was.” Her music, she says, is a cross between country, pop music, and British bands. “My favorite band, besides the Beatles, is Coldplay, and I feel like people hear that a lot in my music and the melodies.” One of Alyssa’s best friends is country pop singer and songwriter Jessie James Decker. “She and I have been friends for about 16 years. Besides being a great friend, she's also been such a champion of my music. We've written many of her singles together like Lights Down Low and Roots and Wings, so she’s been a really big part of my career.” CONTINUED >

In 2017, Steven Tyler attended one of her shows and saw her perform I Make My Own Sunshine, which she wrote in Liverpool as a pick-me-up since it was raining all the time. (The song was featured in a Lowe’s commercial, earning over 50,000 downloads in its first three months and over 1 million plays on Spotify.) Tyler was making a country album at the time and after the show he asked her to send him that song. “I sent it to him and he cut it,” says Alyssa. “I've been very blessed to work with some incredible artists.” Last June, she started releasing music again as a solo artist. “My first solo single in five years, New Wings, a song about rebirth

and transformation after losing everything over the pandemic, soared up the charts and was Top 40 on the country radio media base chart. It was also featured on major playlists on Spotify and Apple Music.” Alyssa will be back in the UK playing shows this summer, but she’s also busy producing a new album at her childhood home studio, Tree Top Recording, in Franklin. Due to be released in the next few months, she says being home and being able to record her own music again has really brought her back to who she is. “Franklin is really a beautiful place to be and to live, to make music and to create.” AlyssaBonagura.com

How can you get a beautiful, inviting and functional backyard retreat? Franklin Lifestyle spoke with Willow Branch Landscapes’ COO, Aaron Gunter, and Residential and Custom Home General Manager, Landon Chambers, about trends in outdoor living rooms.

ARE OUTDOOR LIVING ROOMS GAINING POPULARITY? Yes! Homeowners are extending their living rooms outdoors through the use of softscapes, hardscapes, irrigation, lighting, and audio. This additional entertainment space enhances property values. When properly executed, outdoor living rooms can correct grading and drainage issues and provide landscape buffers to create privacy that pulls you outside to enjoy your property.

WHAT ARE THE MOST DESIRED OUTDOOR SPACES? Many homeowners are looking to expand their kitchen space by incorporating outdoor culinary appliances such as grills, pizza ovens, wine fridges, and kegerators. Covered living areas (pergolas and porches) with outdoor TVs are also big now. Many homeowners are adding fire pits, stone or paver patio spaces, hardscape seating walls and play areas. Lighting and audio options provide a subtle and calming ambiance. We are also helping homeowners update antiquated outdoor living rooms to fit their current needs. When it comes to outdoor living rooms, the possibilities are endless. And that is exciting to us!

WHAT IS YOUR PROCESS? Our process is customer-driven. We partner with our clients from start to finish with design, construction, installation and maintenance. We listen to how our client plans to use the space. Having seen a lot of designs in our almost 20 years in business, we are uniquely positioned to present our clients with ideas they may not have considered. From the initial consultation to the final walkthrough, all outdoor living rooms start with design. Armed with our client's list of “needs and wants,” our in-house design team creates detailed 3D designs highlighting locations for irrigation, lighting, audio systems, water features, pavers and stone surfaces, masonry work, landscape, hardscape and more. Because all the work is done in-house, the client's vision is never lost in translation. Additionally, we facilitate and oversee every aspect of the project so our clients can relax knowing they do not have to deal with multiple contractors.

ANY ADVICE TO HOMEOWNERS LOOKING TO CONTRACT AN OUTDOOR LIVING ROOM? Make sure the contractor has the right credentials to be working on your property. At Willow Branch Landscapes, each of our 80 dedicated team members is vetted, bonded and insured. In this business, your name and reputation are everything. We do what we say we are going to do and provide top-notch service at a fair price.

Dental Bliss Offers Superior, Pain-free Dental Care in a Spa-Like Setting ARTICLE BY BUFFIE BARIL PHOTOGRAPHY BY TRENTON LEE PHOTOGRAPHY

Many people would not put together the words “dental” and “bliss” in the same sentence. However, our friends at Dental Bliss of Franklin raise the bar for their patients. Dental Bliss offers an intimate and relaxed experience that is far superior to most traditional dental appointments. Whether you need a routine exam, cosmetic dentistry, or have a dental emergency, their retreat-like atmosphere will have you surrounded by nature. Even though Dental Bliss specializes in caring for people with dental anxiety, many regular patients find this spa-like setting just what they are looking for in a modern dental practice. Long gone are the days of dreading to go to the dentist. Dr. Megan Girmscheid helps patients from all over the South receive comfortable, one-of-a-kind care. She is affectionately known as “Dr. G, the gentle dentist” who shows compassion and care to both young and old. Dr. G’s bedside manner focuses on listening to each patient's dental journey and helps them create a health plan that is individualized for their specific needs. A typical dental cleaning appointment starts by being greeted with a familiar, friendly face. As you walk into their luxurious office, the waiting room truly feels like you entered a vacation lodge. You will be offered a beverage and escorted to a comfy leather recliner as you wait on your provider to escort you to a private treatment room. The staff at Dental Bliss often says, “We offer the same services as a regular dental practice, but we just have a prettier backyard!” Each treatment room offers views of lush vegetation, natural water features, and various wildlife. Soothing music will drown out all your distractions. You will leave relaxed, refreshed, and recharged. They accept all dental insurance and are in-network with most top insurers. Dental Bliss also offers an in-house plan that covers routine yearly cleanings and x-rays for the year at an affordable price. DentalBliss.com

G E T ACT IV E | FITN ESS

Bags are packed, reservations are made, and the Out of Office automatic reply is letting everyone know you have officially entered vacation mode. There’s one thing that’s lingering: how to go on vacation without pressing pause on the fitness progress you’ve made, or avoid commuting to a gym and paying drop-in fees. Mayhem Athlete provides online programming that guarantees challenging workouts which can be done in 30 minutes or less. These quick but effective workouts incorporate compound movements such as burpees, push ups and lunges. Compound movements use more than one muscle group, requiring more energy from your muscles to recover. This means you can continue to burn calories while enjoying the beach or sitting at work, long after the workout is over. The Mayhem Athlete M30 program offers two options for all fitness levels. Mayhem Bodyweight, a 30-minute format that requires no equipment, and Mayhem Minimal, a 30-minute format which only requires a couple dumbbells. Mayhem Athletes’ easy to use app, SugarWOD, provides you with a warm up, workout, accessory cool-down, and coaching video - ensuring you get the most out of your 30 minutes! You can also find video demonstrations for each movement within the app and a community of like-minded individuals who are doing the same workouts around the globe.

Peach Party! Making the Most of Summer’s Favorite Fruit ARTICLE BY MARIA DINOIA | PHOTOGRAPHY BY THE PEACH TRUCK

Stephen and Jessica Rose founded The Peach Truck to bring their favorite summer peaches to their friends and family in Nashville. Stephen had been truly homesick for the perfectly ripened, juicy fruit he grew up with in his hometown of Fort Valley, Georgia. The flavorless, bland imposters that filled grocery stores were a constant disappointment to him. So the couple partnered with Stephen’s hometown farm and loaded up their truck with hand-picked, justoff-the-tree peaches. The community responded by

eating 10 tons of their brown-bagged peaches in just five weeks! So in 2012 The Peach Truck was born. Ten years later, The Peach Truck has delivered the best food from Mother Nature to their loyal following nationwide. Now Washington Post national best-selling authors for their cookbook and parents to three incredible kiddos, a lot has changed for Jessica and Stephen since that day in 2012. But their passion for delivering fresh summer peaches will never change!
