LIFESTYLE LETTER

Love Local

February 2022 PUBLISHER

Athena West | athena.west@citylifestyle.com EDITOR

Maria Dinoia | maria.dinoia@citylifestyle.com

With the holidays and new year celebrations behind us (as well as hopefully the snowy roads), our February issue is dedicated to Love Local. We celebrate the uniqueness of our local community by highlighting some of Franklin’s small business entrepreneurs, a talented local author, and how love and support of family is making a singer's dream become a reality. Local Will Jordan shares his love of music, theater, and all things Franklin, and we highlight local couples who not only share a home but also share a business. But I would be remiss if I did not mention we have you covered for the biggest day in February for showing our love - Saint Valentine’s Day. We share with you local places to celebrate, local shops to pick up a little something for that special someone, and local places to get out and explore. There is no better time than February and our Love Local issue to let you know my loves. I have a husband who is just as much my friend as he is my spouse. I love our two teenagers. My love for our Franklin community makes it easy for me to say I love my job! Being able to share with you the stories of the people, events and businesses in our area is an honor I don’t take lightly. I love meeting you around town, sharing your photos on social media, and hearing from you about the things you love. So while you fill your home with chocolates, flowers and valentines (and perhaps college basketball) this month, remember to give yourself some time to do what you love. Find what makes you feel alive, and don’t forget to share it with us. And while you are at it, don’t forget to shop local and support our local makers and artists right here in our community. P.S. Franklin Lifestyle is available for pick up at the following locations: Whole Foods - Franklin Mercantile 1858 - Arrington Sip-N-Scoop - College Grove United Country Real Estate- Leipers Fork

Meet local home improvement experts.

Get Inspired!

The Heritage Foundation of Williamson County held a successful 36th Annual Dickens of a Christmas, despite having to cancel one of the day's festivities. An estimated crowd of more than 70,000 locals and visitors took to the streets in Franklin to enjoy the Victorian-inspired festival, a number that is likely a record high for one day of Dickens of a Christmas. When you walk into the downtown children’s shop, you immediately get the sense that The Purple Butterfly is more than just a store. Owners Dale and Neil Budde have created something unique with their specialty children’s boutique. But up until March 22, 2017, butterflies had very little meaning to Dale and purple certainly wasn’t her favorite color. “When my dad was in hospice, they put a purple butterfly on his door to indicate to the staff and visitors that a patient had gone on to a new life. That’s where I got the name for the store.” At the time, they just didn’t know it. Upon the couple’s retirement two years later, they decided to move to Nashville to be near their grandchildren. Neil originally wanted to buy a sailboat and go sailing, but he acquiesced. Then they thought, “‘Why not open a store?”’ After buying thousands of dollars worth of merchandise at Atlanta’s market, they had no place to put it! So they drove straight from Atlanta to downtown Franklin to find a place. Dale says, “I knew I wanted to be one of the cute little shops in Franklin.” After several meetings and phone calls with realtors, it wasn’t looking as if that dream was going to come to fruition. Until it did. “A realtor called me back and said, ‘I have a friend with some space and I don’t know what he’s going to do with it. Give him a call.’” And The Purple Butterfly was born from a former spa space on 2nd Avenue North.

“The space was perfect. I looked up and said, ‘Thank you, Dad.’” Dale adds, “It just evolved. The Purple Butterfly found us.” “Our space is more than just a retail store. People love coming here and sharing their stories with us. We hear lots of grandma stories, baby stories. It’s just a place children want to come because they have fun and they know they are welcome,” says Dale. Neil continues, “Earning a living is secondary. Being a great business and giving back to the community is first and foremost.” CONTINUED >

K I D S COR N E R | SHOPPING

The Purple Butterfly does free, custom monogramming on any item purchased in the store, something the community has embraced. Neil, as founder of The Wall Street Journal Online, has a really good design eye and strong computer skills, so it was a natural fit for him to handle the embroidery. But the duo collaborates on designs and Dale helps with placement. Neil continues, “It’s a niche we have because we don’t charge for it on items purchased in the store. If you bring something else, it’s $15 an item. And we do a ton of custom design, especially for birthdays. You can bring us an invitation and we can pick up artwork from the invitation and put it on to a shirt for the birthday child.” Customer Claire Burch says she enjoys shopping there because of the “incredible customer service. They go above and beyond. It means a lot. When {my daughter} Elouise was born, I didn’t know if I was having a boy or girl. I had my daughter at 4:00 a.m. My mom called the store before it was even open to let them know and they got to monogramming. My mom brought it to me in the hospital and I had something special for Elouise to wear when I brought her home.” Perhaps most poignant is their granddaughter’s handwriting that they monogrammed onto a napkin. She wrote ‘Erika loves Daddy’ and Dale says she’s saving it for when Erika gets married and is going to give it to her son. The couple knows giving back feels good. They host special events such as monthly story times and face painting, live bunnies on the porch at Easter and more. The most recent event was a unique Nearly New Year’s Eve Party attended by 180 children, parents, and grandparents. Customer Allison Schumacher sums it up perfectly. “I love shopping here. Everything is adorable. The monogramming. They are quick. And they are always willing to help.” PurpleButterflyKids.com

Over 500 miles from Nashville sits the quant village of Glen Ellyn, Illinois. A suburb located 24 miles straight west of downtown Chicago, it’s a great place to raise a family right in America’s Heartland. But when someone living there had already made a significant impact in Nashville with her soulful voice and musical talents, what does her family - who has supported her career from day one – decide to do? They move to Nashville, of course. That “someone” is 18-year-old independent music artist Brye Sebring, whose parents, Jenny and Bryan, made the decision in March 2020 to move their family – Brye, Brayden, Bryce, and Brock, from Glen Ellyn to Nashville. Says Brye, “My family has been insanely supportive of my music! Before I had any team members, my parents were my team. They were with me during every label interview, helped me buy equipment, and came to every performance.” On an interesting side note, her father Bryan has kept his successful Naperville, Illinoisbased home building and remodeling business, Sebring Design Build, going strong while also growing a solid business presence in Tennessee. Brye currently has seven songs on streaming platforms, and will be releasing an EP (extended play) with six new songs. “LEMONS” has racked up over 35 million streams on Spotify alone, and “Apocalypse” hit a half-million streams a few months ago and is still going strong. Notes Brye, “I’m signed to a distribution company, Imperial, under Republic Records, and they do an incredible job of getting my music out.” She adds, “We have a good family friend who knows the industry really well. He set up a phone conversation with Janet Weir of 42 Entertainment/Red Light Management in Nashville, who also manages Maren Morris and Ryan Hurd. They weren’t looking to work with any other artists, but after meeting me and my parents they decided they would take me on.” “My entire team is based in Nashville, and in the short time I’ve lived here, I’ve met so many writers and producers who I just adore,” says Brye. “I never would have found those connections in an Illinois suburb. Thanks to Nashville, I have learned so much about the industry, production, and my own music.” BryeMusic.com/@BryeMusic

A One-Of-A-Kind Store Rooted in Friendship

50

LOCA L’S CH OICE | HOM E + DE S I GN

Cheryl, Angie and Amy

The Good Tree is a special and rare place where people walk in as customers and leave as friends, which is fitting because the store is rooted in the dream of three friends, owners Amy Galyon, Angie Dishon, and Cheryl Bates. Friends of 15 years, Angie and Cheryl had started a business together before, but it was when Angie met Amy that the idea for The Good Tree really started to take shape. Angie discovered that the entrepreneurial spirit that she shared with Cheryl was also alive in Amy, as they teamed up to create a thriving “spirit store” at their children’s school. Angie served as the conduit who connected these two friends and a girls’ trip to the beach led the three creative entrepreneurs coming back home with a dream of opening a home décor and gift business. With Angie’s degree in interior design and her background in events and retail, Cheryl’s marketing degree, and Amy’s experience as both a teacher and a partner in her husband’s construction business, the trio each had a different expertise that when brought together produced the perfect foundation to launch their new endeavor. After two years of planning, hard work, and many prayers, they brought their vision to life as they opened The Good Tree on April 1, 2021. In addition to being filled with hand-selected items from small businesses, it sets itself apart from other stores by offering customizable items that make the best gifts. “With my background in interior design, I love finding unique items we can share with our customers,” shares Angie. “I love when a customer says we have items they haven’t seen anywhere else.” Before their doors were even physically open in their Franklin storefront, the women behind The Good Tree were

hard at work partnering with local realtors to put together personalized closing gifts for their clients. Whether it is for a corporate client or an individual customer, The Good Tree offers customizable items such as frames, cutting boards, and coasters that make the perfect gifts for anyone on your list. “Creating personalized gifts are one of our favorites, especially when someone brings in a handwritten recipe, poem or note,” explains Amy. “We take that very personal handwritten item and laser engrave it onto a variety of items in our store to create a family heirloom. We feel honored to be a part of this process.” When it comes to customizing items, the options are endless! From family last names and initials to photos of homes and business logos, The Good Tree can engrave these special images onto many surfaces including wood, marble, glass, and slate in a variety of fonts, making customers’ gifts truly tailored to any style. Taking the personal touch even further, The Good Tree doesn’t outsource this engraving service, instead everything from the artwork to the engraving is done in-house so that the customer can be completely involved in the process of creating their truly custom-made gift. Not only do they offer unique engraved gifts but also gift baskets filled with hand-selected items fit for each and every occasion. “We find joy curating personalized gift baskets for our clients,” says Cheryl. “By sharing details about the person receiving the gift, we are able to help [customers] find something unique and special. Being able to help someone walk through the process of picking out a gift is one of the things that we love doing.” TheGoodTreeTN.com

When It Comes To Real Estate, Is There Anything More Important Than Location, Location, Location? For CPS Land It Just May Be Legacy, Legacy, Legacy ARTICLE BY KAREN CREASON PHOTOGRAPHY BY REED BROWN PHOTOGRAPHY

What first drew you to your current home? Was it the floorplan? The neighborhood? The proximity to work or shopping? The schools? Sometimes it is the intangibles we don’t mention or notice daily, but the ones we feel when we come home - the overall layout of the community, meandering roads, well designed entrances, landscaped streets, decorative street lights, wooded backdrops, mature trees, walking and biking trails, and outstanding amenities. Land developer CPS Land’s mission is to incorporate those intangibles into their developments, to leave a legacy of having created communities that evoke positive feelings, provide a sense of pride for homeowners, and provide spaces for community engagement. In 1990, Allen Patton was responsible for overseeing the development of Fieldstone Farms. At the same time, Dudley Smith was responsible for purchasing home sites in Fieldstone Farms for Fox Ridge Homes. After developing Fieldstone Farms, Allen and Dudley founded CPS Land in 1997 with the vision of creating outstanding master planned communities offering well designed, quality built homes featuring resort style amenities which offer residents not only a place to live, but a community in which to gather and enjoy. CPS Land is “in the business of creating special places for people and families to live and foster relationships. We create communities where residents are connected to one another and to their natural surroundings” states Dudley. Allen stresses the importance of developing “communities that are characterized by inviting streetscapes, coordinated design elements, open natural areas, and special amenities that bring people together. We’re driven to raise the bar, exceed expectations, and make sure each of our communities contributes in a positive manner to the enduring legacy of our region.” In 2017, CPS Land and Ford Classic Homes partnered to develop and build Witherspoon, an exclusive 263-acre enclave of 153 exceptional luxury home sites. Ford Classic Homes, founded by Middle Tennessee native Mike Ford, chose CPS Land to develop the luxury community. By blending extraordinary architecture, exquisite attention to detail, and lush landscaping, Ford Classic Homes and CPS Land have created a prestigious lifestyle community that stands the test of time. CPS Land understands the key ingredients to creating great communities is more than just location (location, location). Witherspoon is highlighted by a stately entrance with a pond and roundabout, paved and natural walking and bike paths, and a resort-style amenity complex which includes a clubhouse with gathering spaces, kitchen and conference space, adult and children’s pools, as well as neighborhood greens and pavilions. Gaven Smith, owner of Studio Gaven in Franklin, has purchased four homes in CPS Land developed communities. His first CPS Land developed home was in the Montclair community. Gaven states “I had great experiences with Ford Classic Homes and CPS Land so I jumped at the chance to build in Witherspoon.” Gaven is quick to point out Witherspoon is the ideal location - close to Franklin, Cool Springs, and Nashville. Gaven enjoys that “I can leave my home and be seated in a restaurant in Nashville in 17 minutes.” Most importantly, Gaven continues, “The sense of neighborhood is strong. The camaraderie among neighbors and the inclusiveness of the community cannot be beat. Everyone fits in and all types are welcome. I don’t see me ever moving from here.” CONTINUED >

“My greatest desire is to create great places for people to live - people of all ages, to use and enjoy the community, to raise families, to enjoy social interactions, take pride in neighborhood, create neighborliness and encourage community. I want to be proud of our accomplishments years down the road” says Allen. “This is the legacy I want to leave behind.” As the building scene changes over time so is the leadership at CPS Land. CPS Land Founding Partner and President Emeritus, Allen Patton, feels it is “the right time to step back from the day-to- day involvement” and let the “creative cream of the crop” employees-turned-executives take the lead. Working alongside Founding Partner and Executive Vice President Dudley Smith, is the new President of CPS Land, Rob Pease. Rob started as a project manager for CPS Land 23 years ago. His experience and expertise in land planning, landscape architectural design, and land development has consistently created projects which have ranked in the top-10 among residential projects in the Nashville area over the last several years. Frank Horton also began his career with CPS Land as a project manager 21 years ago, and is currently serving as Vice President. With 30 years experience as a landscape architect, community developer and all-around problem solver, Frank is responsible for the coordination, planning engineering, permitting, marketing and construction of development projects. Cliff Smith is a professional engineer with 23 years of progressive experience in real estate development, project management, business operations, and

contract negotiation. He has a history of producing strong financial results through superior project management, team leadership, and implementation of quality processes. Cliff’s responsibilities as Vice President include prospecting and land acquisition. Valued executive and CFO, Rob Humphreys is a creative entrepreneur with a diverse set of experiences rooted in finance. Much like CPS Founding Partner, Dudley Smith, Rob operates in both the analytical and the creative realms. From the corporate banking world to the co-founding of Railyard Studios, Rob brings a unique skill set to CPS Land. He is just as comfortable reading a P & L statement as he is vision casting for the company’s next development project. With only 24 home sites remaining in Witherspoon and with great confidence in the highly skilled CPS Land team, Ford Classic Homes is again partnering with CPS Land to develop their newest community - RoseBrooke. Located off Sunset Road in Brentwood, RoseBrooke sales are expected to begin in Spring 2022. RoseBrooke will also be the location for the October 2022 Parade of Homes - the fifth time a CPS Land community has been selected for this honor. Although transitioning to new leadership, CPS Land remains confident in the strength and quality of their development of great communities. Having successfully developed 38 Tennessee communities and more than 6,000 homesites to date, CPS Land is leaving a lasting impact and legacy of communities that are more than just houses in a neighborhood, but rather homes in a community. cpsland.com

The Factory’s Mockingbird

Theater

A Quaint Space with a Big Venue Feel 62

F E AT U R E | ARTS + CU LTURE

When you enter Franklin’s Mockingbird Theater, your first thought is probably, ‘How did I not know about this quaint little music venue inside The Factory?’ After you experience a live performance there, you will quickly realize this stage has big-time theater credentials. Owner Will Jordan is no stranger to live music or putting on an exhilarating concert. He is the owner of the Legendary Kimbro’s Pickin’ Parlor, a local juke joint serving up rock, country, blues, and bluegrass. Kimbro’s won second place behind The Ryman Auditorium for “Best Live Music Venue” in one of The Tennessean‘s reader’s polls and second place behind The Bluebird for “Best Open Mic” in The Nashville Scene‘s reader’s poll. In the shot-gun house next door to Kimbro’s, Carpe Diem stands as Will’s cherished vintage record shop full of antique nostalgia. Will’s passion for photography is evident for a different kind of pickin’ as you scour through the shop’s collection of old cameras, antique record players, and vinyl albums your grandparents probably treasured. These two South Margin tiny spaces also offer a powerful punch for music lovers. In fact, Will grew up in Franklin and is the son of two of our most prominent preservationists, Peter and Rudy Jordan. His father, Peter, was an advocate for historic preservation and a big supporter of Williamson County parks. He died in 2011, and the city’s Bicentennial Park was named after him for his tireless devotion to protect green spaces for our recreational enjoyment. We can all thank Rudy Jordan, Will’s beloved mother, for making downtown Franklin “America’s Favorite Main Street.” She served as Heritage Foundation director from 1978-1986, and then as director of the Downtown Franklin Association. In 1984, Rudy led the way for the Main Street Program which changed the face and future of downtown forever by revitalizing its 28 historic buildings and bringing the festivals like Pumpkinfest and Dickens of a Christmas to town. In preserving this building, Will reminds all of us, “It’s important to remember Franklin’s history and not lose our sense of place.”

This painting was done live on stage by local artist Roy Laws.

“Sometimes when there is too much traffic due to downtown festivals and events, I joke with my mother that it’s her fault,” says Will. “She literally headed up the preservation movement that created the charm that defines Franklin.” Will is carrying on his parents’ preservation legacy. In 2019, he had the opportunity to take over the lease for Building 6 at The Factory. It was formerly known as Boiler Room Theater and Little Brick Theater. The Factory was truly a factory at one time when it was the home of Dortch Stoveworks. The particular space Mockingbird Theater is located in really did house the boiler for the old stove manufacturing company. Its ten separate buildings were all woven together like a patchwork quilt. With Will’s new vision, he decided on a new name. He chose the name “Mockingbird” after two actual mockingbirds, who were fighting in midair one day, nearly hit him in the head. He took that as

64

F E AT U R E | ARTS + CU LTURE

a sign. Not only was this songbird a literary twist for his new music venue, it represented Tennessee’s state bird. Mockingbird Theater reopened as a premier live performance venue. It features theater-style seating, a new state-of-the-art sound system and lighting, along with a wide stage. What gives this venue the “historic Franklin vibe” are the exposed brick walls. It feels like you’ve stepped inside a speakeasy from a scene in The Great Gatsby. With nearly 40-foot ceilings and steel beams, the Mockingbird makes for a stunning backdrop for private events and live performances of all genres. In preserving this building, Will reminds all of us, “It’s important to remember Franklin’s history and not lose our sense of place.” The Mockingbird can hold up to 150 people for private parties and corporate functions. It has been used as a backdrop for music videos as well. They offer full

bar service including beer, wine, spirits, and great food. The Factory is currently undergoing a facelift thanks to new ownership. In 2021, Holladay Properties purchased the property for $56 million with a long-term capital commitment to preserve one of Franklin’s most important pieces of history. The Mockingbird will be an essential part of The Factory’s future growth. With the combination of Mockingbird Theater, Kimbro’s Pickin’ Parlor, the Franklin Theatre, Puckett’s, and the Pilgrimage Music Festival at Harlinsdale, Franklin can hold its own as a music destination this side of Music City. Coming in 2022, there are phenomenal musical acts and charitable events coming to the Mockingbird including an ALS benefit in February, Arcadian Wild in May, and Reverend Horton Heat in June. Make sure to subscribe to their newsletter and follow them on Instagram and Facebook for the latest news. MockingbirdTheater.com

Scout Turner and Dylan Ritter are newlyweds who grew up in Murfreesboro and moved to Nashville to be closer to work. Scout has a background in sales and human resources, and Dylan worked in sales for Certapro for five years before he and Scout bought the franchise. Both of their parents own small businesses and they grew up dreaming of running their own companies one day. They are passionate about building a company culture that feels more like a family and creating opportunities for workers who want to grow professionally. They say that one of the keys to their success is the fact they each have different strengths, which helps them to achieve the outcomes their customers want. They bought Certapro, a professional painting franchise, in April of 2021. HOW DID YOU ACQUIRE YOUR BUSINESS? “Dylan was an employee and enjoyed the culture of the business. There are 360 Certapro franchises in the U.S. and Canada, and ours is in the top five in sales and customer satisfaction. We had the backgrounds necessary to run the business and already knew we loved the work.” TELL US ABOUT YOUR TYPICAL WORK DAY. “Before we had the business, we rarely hung out together during the week because we were in different sales jobs. Now we spend the whole day together in the same office – Scout painted it navy and pink!” Dylan focuses on marketing and sales, while Scout handles human resources, and her favorite part of the business, team building. WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO ON YOUR DAYS OFF? “We really have to plan for time off, otherwise we’ll end up working. We like to golf, go for dinner and drinks, visit Scout’s parents’ lake house, and play with our dogs, Cash and Whitley.”

Scout Turner and Dylan Ritter, Certapro Painters of Nashville and Middle Tennessee

WHAT’S A CHALLENGE THAT YOU’VE FACED SINCE OPENING YOUR BUSINESS? “Making the transition from employee to owner was bumpy but that’s expected. It would’ve been easier in some ways to start a business from scratch, because ours was already running and we needed to jump in and go right away. Luckily, I was already in the business and Scout was experienced with the back-end work.” WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE FUTURE OF YOUR BUSINESS? “We get enjoyment from providing a good experience for our customers and creating opportunity for our employees. We’d like to own more businesses to offer more family work culture and growth. Some of our subcontractors have been with us for thirteen years; we want to support them, support our team, and support each other in doing what we love to do.” CONTINUED > Certapro.com/nashvillesouth FEB R UARY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . Matt and Brooke Kasiar grew up in rural Illinois and attended rival small-town high schools. Theirs is a cute homecoming king meets the homecoming queen from the next town, love story. He took her to Applebee’s for their first date, and now they’re married with a three-yearold son and one-year-old twins. In 2016. they moved to Tennessee, where Dr. Kasiar practiced dentistry in Antioch and Franklin and Brooke was a speech pathologist at Williamson County Medical Center. He runs the dentistry side of the business and she manages the design and construction. “The Practice” opened in May of 2021. HOW DID YOU ACQUIRE YOUR BUSINESS? “We searched for four years for the right location and were able to buy this piece of land from Walker Chevrolet. It used to be a parking lot for their vehicles. We did two years of prep work to make sure we could be up and running once we left our previous jobs. It was always our dream to have our own practice.” TELL US ABOUT YOUR TYPICAL WORK DAY. Matt: “I’m up at 5:00 am to work out, give the twins their bottles, leave at 7:00am for work and am home by 4:30pm. Brooke has the kids all day! On Wednesdays, they come to the office and eat lunch with me.” WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO ON YOUR DAYS OFF? “When you have little kids, there’s something to do every moment of every day! We have a great staff; they allow me to leave work at work. Matt’s parents have a lake house close by, and we love to go boating.” WHAT’S A CHALLENGE THAT YOU’VE FACED SINCE OPENING YOUR BUSINESS? “We had construction delays and had already hired our staff, then our twins were born at the exact time as the business was set to open. We didn’t know if we would have patients and worried about how to manage it all. Our parents stepped in to help at home and our patients found us. It all worked out.” WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE FUTURE OF YOUR BUSINESS? “We’d like to expand and operate multiple locations. We want our kids to have memories of running around our practice. Maybe one of them will be a dentist! We want to continue our “Second Chance Smiles” giveaway program with Brittany Aldean. Matt loves dentistry so much and says , ‘It doesn’t feel like work. I get to do this every day?’” ThePracticeTN.com CONTINUED >

Arriving at the home-based business of Pam and Gary Jordan is like entering a fantasyland of southern living. Rocking chairs on the porch, green acres with a barn out back, a bright, airy kitchen you don’t want to leave. Pam and Gary know how to create the welcoming spaces customers crave for hosting family and friends. Their aptly-named business, Eat Gather Love, transforms kitchens from dreary to dreamy. They met in 1986 when Pam hired Gary to install a jacuzzi tub in her Memphis bathroom. “He pulled up in a Corvette! Thirty-three years of marriage and raising a family prepared them to run Eat Gather Love, that they opened in 2019. HOW DID YOU ACQUIRE YOUR BUSINESS? Pam designed closets for a national closet company while Gary had a contracting license, owned a tile company and worked in the corporate world. “We wanted to do something together. We love to gather our family, and we want to help others create happiness in the heart of the home, the kitchen.” Eat Gather Love started in the UK and expanded to the U.S. The couple were one of the first to sign on and they own the Nashville North and Nashville South territories. TELL US ABOUT YOUR TYPICAL WORK DAY. Gary and his crews leave for their work sites at 7:00am. Pam starts her day with phone calls, then goes to client consultations. “Monday is my office day and Friday is my design day.”

WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO ON YOUR DAYS OFF? “We have three beautiful grandchildren who we don’t get to see enough of. They live close by, and they come over to gather with us in the kitchen or on our back porch.” WHAT’S A CHALLENGE THAT YOU’VE FACED SINCE OPENING YOUR BUSINESS? “We opened in 2019 and a year later we went through four months where clients didn’t want consultations in their homes. We didn’t know how long that would last. Because of that, we learned how to do virtual consultations, which we can still offer. The other challenge has been finding skilled labor, which isn’t easy these days. We only hire workers who truly care about craftsmanship.” WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE FUTURE OF YOUR BUSINESS? “Our goal is to help people re-imagine their kitchens and love them! We also own two franchises – Nashville and South Nashville, and we have two children. We want to give our children an opportunity to own a business should they decide they want to take it over. We want it to be a legacy for them and for our grandchildren when we’re ready to step down.” EatGatherLove.com/contact-us/ tennessee-nashville CONTINUED >

Mindy and Tim Bledsoe say one of the reasons their business is successful is because they make good partners in life. Married 36 years, they’ve raised three children, built three houses, and supported each other in their careers. Today, they’re running their first business together. Mindy was a designer for a major closet company for over 13 years, and Tim comes from a sales background. Together they run Tailored Living, helping clients transform their homes with custom storage solutions, including closets, home offices, pantries, and garages. At the beginning of 2021, Mindy and Tim’s business was recognized as the fastest-growing Tailored Living franchise in North America. They serve customers throughout Middle Tennessee. HOW DID YOU ACQUIRE YOUR BUSINESS? Five years ago, Mindy was ready to make a change and the couple worked with a business broker to find the right opportunity. “We visited a Tailored Living franchise in Kentucky and were impressed by the quality of the product. It was a natural fit with my background in closet design, and the timing was right.”

TELL US ABOUT YOUR TYPICAL WORKDAY. “We respect each other’s roles in the business, and we’ve established healthy boundaries that allow us both to be efficient and productive on a daily basis.” Mindy handles sales and operations, while Tim takes care of all things financial. They collaborate on human resources matters and long-range planning. WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO ON YOUR DAYS OFF? [Laughter] “We don’t take many days off. Running a small business is a lot of work. Fortunately, we love what we do, we’ve been blessed to have doubled our business year-over-year for the past two years. We jokingly refer to our weekends as ‘work from home days.’ We do try to purposefully create time away from work and love to be with our kids and grandkids. When we have a chance, we love to travel, and go kayaking. No phones allowed on the river!” WHAT’S A CHALLENGE THAT YOU’VE FACED SINCE OPENING YOUR BUSINESS? “Just running a small

business can be a challenge and we’ve certainly had our share. Through it all, we’ve learned to adapt to change and discovered that we’re very resilient.” Just in the past year they had one of their trucks stolen, had to evacuate their office/warehouse with little notice, due to foundation issues, and worked to overcome supply chain shortages. “We’ve learned not to panic, and we choose to take on each challenge as it comes. It’s not always easy, but it’s definitely worth it!” WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE FUTURE OF YOUR BUSINESS? “We love it so much; we just want to keep growing. One of our objectives in starting our own business was to create an organization that puts people before profits. We are confident that if we continue to treat our employees and clients with the respect they deserve, our company will continue to grow right along with this awesome city.” TailoredLiving.com/nashville

THE SOUNDS OF AMERICAN POP MUSIC HISTORY ARTICLE BY ED ATLAS PHOTOGRAPHY BY PROVIDED BY BILL SCHNEE

“CHAIRMAN” BILL SCHNEE HAS WRITTEN THE BOOK

When it came to producing the greatest hits of the 1970s and 1980s, Bill Schnee wrote the book. Today, the Franklin resident has written another book that chronicles his fascinating career in the music industry. Chairman at the Board: Recording the Soundtrack of a Generation is Schnee’s personal account of a career that has placed him in the room for some of the greatest moments in the history of recorded music. A prolific storyteller, Schnee was encouraged to write the book by friends and peers who were captivated by his tales. The result is a narrative that is as entertaining as it is compelling. “I wrote the book for the guy next door,” says Schnee, a multiple Grammy and Emmy Award-winning producer. “Anyone like me that loves music and records but hasn’t been as fortunate as I was to go behind the curtain.” In the sense that his career aligns with the heyday of pop music, when radio ruled and the local record store was a hub of social activity, Chairman is an informal history of American culture from that era. But as it was happening, Schnee didn’t recognize that he was part of something that would become so indelible. “I didn’t really think about what was going on at the time, it was just one project to the next,” he says. “The first record I produced that sold two million was when I started realizing, ‘Wow, one out of every how many people here has bought that record?’ That was kinda

86

interesting! First time I ever heard anything on the radio that I had produced, that was pretty special, too.” The chapters, which are named after songs on which Schnee worked, are instantly recognizable to any fan of seventies or eighties pop. The stories provide insight into the minds and idiosyncrasies of the artists, about how those particular songs came to be, and Schnee’s influence on them. Originally, Schnee tried to make it as a performer but it was during a recording session with producer Richie Podolor (Three Dog Night, Iron Butterfly, Steppenwolf) that his journey took a different path. “When we went into Richie’s studio for the first playback, I felt something emotional from our band that I had never ever felt. And it was a real ‘ah ha!’ moment. I knew right then that I wanted to know how to do that. That was the moment that sent me on my course for life.” It’s a course that has crossed paths with the likes of Carly Simon, Gladys Knight, Steely Dan, Huey Lewis and The News, Ringo Starr, Boz Scaggs, Barbara Streisand, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, and many others who are all accounted for in Chairman. Published by Backbeat Books, Chairman at the Board: Recording the Soundtrack of a Generation is available everywhere books are sold. Additional information, including how to gain access to unpublished chapters, is available at BillSchnee.com.

“THE FIRST RECORD I PRODUCED THAT SOLD TWO MILLION WAS WHEN I STARTED REALIZING, ‘WOW, ONE OUT OF EVERY HOW MANY PEOPLE HERE HAS BOUGHT THAT RECORD?’ THAT WAS KINDA INTERESTING!” — Bill Schnee FEB R UARY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM / F R A N KL I N

Believe it or not, Valentine’s Day was not created by candy companies, but the day just wouldn’t be the same without chocolates! This February 14, handmade gourmet chocolates from Schakolad are a perfect gift to show your significant other or best friends you care.

92

S EASON A L SE T U P S | FOOD + BE VE RAGE

Baruch Schaked and his son Edgar, who started the first Schakolad Chocolate Factory in Winter Park, Florida in 1995, taught Carley Matlock the family recipe and techniques of European chocolate making. Baruch traveled Europe practicing the art of traditional chocolate making and now shares his time-tested system to his franchisees so he can cover the world in chocolate. Schakolad is a fusion of Schaked and Chocolate, and is pronounced “shaq-oh-LAD”. Schakolad has been in Franklin for 19 years. Three years ago, Franklin was lucky to have Carley take over as the owner of the location. She never expected to become a chocolatier. Carley explains, “I was a baker and cake decorator when I found out that the franchise location was left vacant and available for sale. I took a leap of faith and plunged into chocolate making.” They moved to their new Cool Springs location in July 2021. European-style chocolate is made with high-quality, all natural ingredients and extra cocoa butter, which makes it

incredibly smooth and rich. Carley and her team are constantly making the chocolates fresh in the shop every day. Schaked’s methods are at the core, but the chocolatiers are able to let their originality shine in their creations. Carley says, “It varies on which holidays, but we make thousands of ganaches, truffles, and clusters per day. My personal favorite is Dark Sea Salt Caramel. Our store’s most popular seller is our Raspberry Ganache.” For the month of love, Schakolad is making themed treats such as chocolate covered Oreos, pretzels, cherries, Rice Krispies, and cake pops, with fun red and pink roses, hearts, and sprinkles. They have Valentine chocolate bars that say cute things like “I Love You” or “Be Mine” gift-wrapped and ready to go. All of Schakolad’s chocolates are good for up to six months, but let’s be real - who is waiting six months to devour a local delicacy? Not us!

BEER + COFFEE =

CURIO BREWING

ARTICLE BY DAWN BURNS PHOTOGRAPHY BY PROVIDED

“We really want to push the boundaries of how coffee and beer can work seamlessly together.” — David Morris to Daily Coffee News Curio Brewing is the result of two visionaries, David Morris and Alex Wigton, who decided after many conversations that we could all use a little more beer and coffee in our lives! Located on Noah Drive in Franklin, you can find several cold brew coffee products as well as a unique selection of beer recipes in their modern taproom. Orange U Curious, an orange hazy IPA, Kilt the Cat, a Scottish ale and Woke, a coffee milk stout are a few choices on the menu. Not only is Curio a fun stop for your favorite beverages, but they also host weekly events like Wednesday night trivia, pop-up classes, and interesting opportunities as these brewers are also trying to cultivate community in Franklin. One way they are accomplishing community building is by starting the Curio Jogging Association. Participants jog three-four miles on Tuesday mornings through downtown Franklin and then meet for coffee afterwards. On Saturdays, Curio hosts a free one-hour yoga session. What better way to get moving, meet new friends and have a cup or two! You can often find food trucks like Ginger Pig, parked outside of Curio. In addition, Curio will also be utilizing local bakeries to provide food offerings. They are also in the process of obtaining a liquor license. Curio is building partnerships with businesses, other coffee shops, local churches, restaurants, private events, and many other opportunities. They can source their coffee for just about any business or event. Coffee subscriptions are also available on their website. With the coffee subscriptions, you can select your flavor of coffee and how often you’d like to receive it. Stop by Curio for coffee, beer, and community! Hours vary throughout the week. Va lent i ne’s Day, Fran k l i n St yle Great Ideas to Celebrate Love Locally

When we think about Valentine’s Day, most of us think of the traditional date night with a significant other, but that’s not how everyone celebrates the day of love. Sometimes, we throw together a group of girlfriends and good times and call it Galentine’s Day. Maybe the gist of your holiday involves a 25-count box of Valentine’s Day cards featuring cartoon characters based on underwater crustations. Or perhaps you like to blow off February 14th altogether and treat yourself to a little pampering the following day on Singles Awareness Day. It all depends on who and what you love. Deciding what to do is always the challenge, so planning ahead is almost necessary. Nobody wants to be the one who turns up empty-handed on Valentine’s Day. Flowers and chocolates are a given for anyone dear to your heart, but a spa day is a wonderful way to treat a significant other, a family member, or just yourself. Cocktails are a fine way to enjoy the evening, whether you’re on a date or out with your galentines, but a café is a great place to start if your Valentine happens to be someone new in your life. A romantic dinner between lovers is another obvious option; sometimes a candlelit table for two is everything you’ve ever dreamed of. Or you may be more successful in showing your love just by ordering a heart-shaped pizza for the whole family. Whatever you need to make your Valentine’s Day special, you can find it in Franklin. With tons of great restaurants, florists, and spas, you might need a little help picking out the ones that suit your needs.

life’s

detours Dr. David Snodgrass Shares His Story To Inspire Others

Sometimes life’s journey has unexpected detours that can be blessings if you just look for the opportunity in the adversity. Pediatric dentist, Dr. David Snodgrass has chosen to look for those opportunities when faced with adversity throughout his personal life and career. Snodgrass-King is one of the country’s largest multi-specialty dental practices, typically seeing 40,000+ patients a year in their four offices. What you may not know is Dr. Snodgrass’s journey to dentistry did not come without detours. He grew up modestly in Gate City, Virginia, and Kingsport, Tennessee with his cousin, Mary Louise, living next door. She was often mocked and picked on due to a rare birth defect. From a very young age, Dr. Snodgrass became aware of how those with differing needs were viewed and treated unfairly. His experiences with Mary Louise shaped him into the man he is today - a compassionate champion for individuals with differing abilities - where they are seen as equals, where time and attention are freely given, and patience, grace, and understanding are always extended. G IV IN G BAC K | L IFE + CULTURE

Dr. Snodgrass was awarded a music scholarship to attend college, but his first detour, poor grades because of a lack of motivation, ultimately led to leaving college and enlisting in the U.S. Army Reserve where he proudly served for eight years. In 1970, he went to work at Mason Dixon Truck Lines as a special equipment coordinator. In the evenings and on the weekends he continued his love of music, playing trumpet alongside some of the best musicians in the industry and with his own band, The Castaways. His second detour occurred when he was laid off due to the economic downturn in 1976. He re-enrolled in college with more focus and a vision to become a pediatric dentist. He earned his Doctorate of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Tennessee in 1984, but not without another detour in the midst of his schooling. While in his second year of dental school, he witnessed a stranger being beaten “within an inch of his life.” Dr. Snodgrass grabbed the aggressor, but in doing so was shot, with one of the bullets striking him in the left temple. He lost vision in his left eye and was forced into a year long delay, but was determined that nothing was going to keep him from his dream of becoming a dentist. “Having vision in one eye has made me a better dentist and a better person. I would do it all again.” After he returned to school, he met his future wife, Melody, a surgical nurse at Baptist East Hospital. As chief resident during his second year of residency at Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Cincinnati, Dr. Snodgrass had two patients that left such an impact on him that he was determined to learn all he could about pediatric growth and development. To that end, while in his residency program, he simultaneously took a two-year course to learn orthodontics that led to the invention of the “Snodgrass Appliance.” This ultimately eliminated the need for pulling multiple teeth, as it offers the benefit of two appliances in one and is still used around the country 30 years later. Dr. Snodgrass and Melody opened their first office in Hermitage, Tennessee. Unlike other dentists who referred patients out for orthodontic work, Dr. Snodgrass incorporated orthodontics and general dentistry and became the first multi-specialty practice in Tennessee. From his first seven patients to today, Snodgrass-King sees over 40,000 patients a year and has treated over 3,500 cases of physically handicapped and medically compromised children under general anesthesia. Melody, newly retired from management of the practices, is also credited with

Dr. Snodgrass in Haiti

designing the office. “Our original 1,500 square foot office was so sterile and boring and I wondered, ‘Why?’ We are a pediatric dental office so let’s design this with kids in mind.” With their signature leopard print carpet, TVs mounted above each dental chair, arcade games, fish tanks, and at one time, a turquoise Harley Davidson in the waiting room, it is no wonder kids (and parents) want to come early for appointments. Melody was instrumental in the decision for Snodgrass-King to be the first dentist to advertise on television. Marking 35 years in practice last month, the Snodgrass-King philosophy has not changed - “If anyone is in pain, it doesn’t matter the time of the day, come in, and we will treat you.” Dr. Snodgrass has trained and mentored more than 100 dentists and dental assistants. One of those is Dr. Terry King. Terry’s dream was to practice alongside his father, Bill, also a pediatric dentist, and a close friend of Dr. Snodgrass. Unfortunately, Dr. William King passed away before the dream of a father/son practice could be realized. Dr. Snodgrass offered Terry, in his second year of residency, an opportunity to work alongside him in the Snodgrass Dental practice. Two years later, Dr. Terry King became a partner and the Snodgrass-King partnership was formed. Together the two have built, equipped, supplied, and staffed a dental clinic in Haiti since 2006. Drs. Snodgrass and King have taken medical teams of 15-20 staff members to Haiti and the Dominican Republic where they supplied and ran a free dental clinic. “When we finished building our clinic, we shipped and donated dental equipment and supplies to other dentists in Haiti. And every time we revisited our clinic, we resupplied theirs. By doing this we built up a long-lasting trust.” A valued lecturer and mentor, multiple-journal-published author and former assistant clinical professor at both Vanderbilt and Meharry Medical College, School of Dentistry, Dr. Snodgrass still finds the most joy in giving kids a smile. “I always want to be more than just a dentist to my patients.” He treasures letters from patients and parents thanking him for work he has done, wisdom he has shared, and smiles he has saved. When asked if he plans to slow down or retire, Dr. Snodgrass, a father of three, grandfather to two with another on the way, laughs “Why would I stop doing what I love? I like going to work. God has blessed us in every single way.” Many of his staff agree as many have been loyal employees for 15 - 20 years. There will always be uncertainty in life, yet Dr. David Snodgrass would not change a thing. He has learned to embrace life’s detours and shares his story to inspire others. ELITE AND BOUTIQUE A GREAT LOCAL BUSINESS MODEL

110

I NSP IR E D BY | PR OFESSI ONAL S E RVI CE S

After working as an actor and model for over 25 years in television, film, commercials, print, music videos and runway, and being associated with names like Belk, Victoria’s Secret, Volkswagen, Brad Paisley, Dierks Bentley, and more, Nicole Staggs decided to make the jump to the other side of the industry. Now as the head agent and owner of Third Coast Elite in Franklin, she understands both sides of the business well.

WHY WAS IT IMPORTANT TO YOU TO START YOUR OWN MODELING AND ACTING AGENCY? I wanted to become an agent when I turned 40, but nothing seemed to be the right fit for my life. I’m a full-time, single mother with two kids (one with autism), so my schedule needed to be more flexible. Over the years, I had built great relationships with clients who I had gotten on my own. I also noticed a lot of my friends in the business were just not working as much as they could be and were frustrated. I knew there was a need for more consistent work. After some conversations, believing in myself, and putting my faith in God, here we are. It has been the blessing I needed for my family, as well as for my friends, for whom I’ve been able to provide more work …that makes me happy!

WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO OPEN YOUR AGENCY HERE IN FRANKLIN? I loved the idea of having the first talent agency in my hometown and working more with local businesses.

HOW DOES THIRD COAST ELITE STAND OUT FROM OTHER MODELING AGENCIES?

Being a boutique agency, we have a smaller, more select group of talent. I understand how it feels to be one of many in the same category just in your own agency, and that makes it more difficult to book jobs. I really work hard to try and keep the talent I have working more. I also think having been on the other end, I can identify with, understand, and hopefully build a better level of trust with my talent.

NICOLE STAGGS

AS A FEMALE BUSINESS OWNER, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO OTHER WOMEN WHO ARE THINKING ABOUT STARTING THEIR OWN BUSINESSES? When you do something that inspires you, you’ll be the best at it. You’ll meet doubters and people who aren’t supportive, but those are the ones that help you grow and make you want to become better. There’s room for everyone! Be patient and flexible…it takes time to build a business. Being an entrepreneur can be very challenging at times, so make sure you give yourself grace. It’s incredibly rewarding to see even the smallest bit of success when you’ve built your own business, and that makes it so worth it! Thirdcoast-elite.com

Murals

in Franklin

Murals transform boring, blank walls into vibrant public art. Our city’s talented muralists continue to amaze us with new murals year after year for tourists and locals alike to enjoy. Franklin’s largest mural features four native Franklin flowers in front of the newly-built community Avondale Cottages. Local artist Michael Cooper and his team at Murals & More, LLC just finished the colorful “Not Your Average Wallflowers” mural in November 2021, which required scaffolding seven stories high. So get out, get some fresh air and spend the day with friends or family going on a mural “scavenger hunt” and snap some Instagrammable photos. Pop the locations in your GPS and get started on a fun day around Franklin!

styled by sonika For many people, the constant seasonal change in fashion is overwhelming. But not for Sonika Surati. Born in England, she has always loved and embraced fashion as a form of artistic expression. “Fashion has always been a passion of mine.” So it was inevitable that the 33-year-old would start a blog about it. The former medical lab tech started her blog in 2015, but really became consistent with it in 2016 after her first child was born. “I started out sharing organizing tips. I never looked at blogging as a career. I didn’t go in to it with that expectation. I went in to it as a hobby, completely for fun and it turned into something bigger.” That something bigger is an Instagram with almost 43K followers. Sonika states, “It primarily focuses on fashion and beauty but there’s lifestyle and home and kids. I mix in a little bit of everything. It keeps the audience engaged when you bring something different to the table. I get tons of questions about my skin care routine. And I love sharing sales! I love doing gift guides during the holidays.” The mom of three adds, “When I first started, I hesitated about being in front of a camera constantly. I’m over that now. My husband bought me a Canon camera for Christmas a few years ago and helped me overcome it. My only regret was not starting sooner.”

“I started out sharing organizing tips. I never looked at blogging as a career. I didn’t go in to it with that expectation. I went in to it as a hobby, completely for fun and it turned into something bigger.”

But how does she deal with the negativity that’s a natural part of the influencer lifestyle? “I don’t. It’s not a thought in my mind. If that’s what I held on to, I wouldn’t be where I am. The way I look at it, there’s always an unfollow button.” Success doesn’t happen overnight, but her advice for budding influencers and bloggers? “Don’t hold back. If there’s something you want to do, go for it. Instagram and social media in general is where it’s at. You can make a career out of it.” Sonika has worked with brands like Spanx, Mackenzie Childs, and Dolce Vita, to name a few. “My biggest goal would be to have my own fashion brand. And I’d love to open a boutique.” StyledbySonika.com/ Instagram:@styledbysonika FEB R UARY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM / F R A N KL I N
